ared Petersen will likely never forget the 2013 HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. He and Titus 2:11 won their third consecutive Sunday grand prix, and their fourth grand prix of the circuit in the Mar. 3 $50,000 Ring Power Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis. The 20-year-old rider from Archer, Florida is sitting on a relatively new mount with Titus 2:11, owned by his father Derek Petersen, and this season marks their first at grand prix-level competition together. The Petersen family, while elated at the recent string of successes, is admittedly shocked at how things have played out so early in this duo’s career. “Don’t pinch me!” said Petersen’s father Derek after the Sunday event. “We are blown away by how well this horse keeps jumping.”

The course was designed by Dave Ballard of Tottenham, Ontario and saw five clear rounds advance for a jump-off that proved to be one of the more difficult tests presented at HITS Ocala this season. First to return was Sulu Rose-Reed of Mechanicsville, Virginia and Envy, owned by Reed and Lisa Stripllin. Eight jumping faults on the field and a time of 37.01 seconds ultimately secured her the third-place ribbon. Next to show was Petersen and Titus 2:11, who made it look easy with a beautiful ride over Ballard’s final test. A clear round set the Great American Time to Beat at 38.11 seconds. “This horse has one of the biggest strides of any horse I have ever ridden and it makes him hard to beat in the jump-off,” said Petersen of Titus 2:11, a nine-year-old Holsteiner gelding. Third to show was David Beisel of Goshen, Ohio and Ammeretto, owned by Equine Holdings LLC. Beisel was second to Petersen in Thursday’s $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, and hoped to capitalize on his second chance at victory. Sixteen jumping faults in 44.67 seconds, however, put Beisel in fifth. Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas and MTM Farm’s MTM Centano had two rails for eight faults in a time of 37.81 seconds, good enough for fourth. Fenney also earned the tenth place ribbon with her second mount, MTM Farm’s MTM Timon. Last to show was Lisa Goldman, 23, of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois and her own Morocco. Goldman has made a name for herself with two grand prix victories already under her belt. She is known for being hard to beat in the jump-offs and was the perfect candidate to put Petersen’s win in jeopardy. But, a fall in the warm-up ring left Goldman a little shaken. “It took me a couple minutes to get back up, but I knew I had to get back on and go for it,” said Goldman. She and Morocco were plenty fast, but a rail after the in-and-out combination came down to keep her from the win. She finished with eight faults and a time of 34.52 seconds for second place.
“I hurt my ankle in the fall, but I’ll be fine. I was definitely going for it when I got out there and I knew I was really fast from the start. I even slowed down after the first jump,” added Goldman. “I’m really happy for Jared, he’s having a great season.” Goldman finished in the ribbons on three mounts yesterday, picking up the seventh aboard Mary Goldman’s Centurion B and ninth with Tammy McConnell’s Zacantos Z. The road to HITS Championship Weekend continues through HITS Ocala as the winter winds down in the Horse Capital of the World. piloted Hays Investment Corp.’s Bellini to the top scores in both rounds of the hunter prix, earning an 88 and 89 for a combined score of 177. “Today’s course was straightforward, but the new ring with the bank keeps the courses fresh and fun to ride,” said Holloway. Bellini and Holloway were partnered this past summer to show primarily in Junior Hunter divisions and collected six top-five ribbons last week, in addition to their blue in the Devoucoux Hunter Prix. “Bellini is very easy, very honest and a joy to ride. He was awesome today,” said Holloway of the seven-year-old Warmblood gelding. “If he hasn’t sold by September, he is most definitely the horse I would choose to ride in the Diamond Mills Final.” Adrienne Marciano of Collegeville, Pennsylvania, try as she might to best Holloway, pocketed a pair of 86s for a combined score of 172, which was good enough for second place. She was aboard her own Grey Street. The top three was completed with Harold Chopping of Southern Pines, North Carolina and Caroline Russell Howe’s Caramo earning a 170.5. Only fractions of a point decided fourth and fifth places. Meghan Flanagan of Atlanta, Georgia and her own O’Ryan finished fourth with a combined score of 169.25, and Nicole Lyvere of Lakewood, Colorado settled for fifth aboard her own Drumline with a 169. Devoucoux, the makers of fine French saddles, will continue to present weekly hunter prix, which represent the only way for hunter riders to punch their ticket to the prestigious Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final during HITS Championship Weekend in Saugerties this September.
$1,500 HITS HUNTER PRIX Sophia Lothrop of Shelburne, Vermont has gone south this winter to qualify for the popular HITS $250,000 Hunter Prix Final and she found success with her own Castell. The pair rode to first place in the first of three remaining HITS Hunter Prix qualifiers in Ocala. Amy Zettler of Aldie, Virginia, who finished second in last year’s HITS Hunter Prix Final, finished in second place with her own Glad Rags this week. Kristen Sameth of Lebanon, New Jersey was third aboard her own Vandrin and Erica Lipke of Hamburg, New York was fourth on Christine Hannon’s Knight Call. Eliza Month of Scarsdale, New York rounded out the top five in the irons of her own Duval. HCD

i The Ride Jared Petersen and Titus 2:11 Continue to
Ride a Wave of Grand Prix Wins at HITS Ocala day grand prix and some of the high amateur jumper classics on Sundays in Ocala. “Apparently this horse doesn’t care how high the jumps are,” he said. “He has figured this whole thing out pretty well and we are going to let him keep going until he shows us that he needs to rest.” Jared and Titus 2:11 were one of eight to go clear over a course designed by Dave Ballard of Tottenham, Ontario, which included 12 obstacles and 15 jumping efforts. “The first round had a lot of good lines for us,” said Petersen. “There were a few opportunities to leave strides out and he [Titus 2:11] is really good at that.” Last to ride in the jump-off, Petersen had only one clear round to beat. David Beisel of Goshen, Ohio, had gone first in the jump-off and set an early Great American Time To Beat of 33.65 seconds. Beisel, riding Equine Holdings, LLC’s Ammeretto remained in the top spot until Petersen’s trip, despite six other attempts to unseat him. Four riders found trouble jumping into the double combination at the end of the course: Lisa Goldman of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois; Jordan Coyne of New Port Richey, Florida; James Gillam of North Hatley, Quebec; and Erin Haas of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mary Lisa Leffler of Brookeville, Maryland had an unlucky rail at the first fence for four faults and Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas suffered a rail at the last fence. “My only strategy was to catch David [Beisel],” Petersen said after posting the final and winning trip of the day in 32.91 seconds. “I’m still in shock that everything is working out like this, and I’m thankful to God everyday that I am able to ride this horse.” Fenney picked up third aboard one of her two mounts for the day, MTM Farm’s MTM Centano, while Lisa Goldman and Mary Goldman’s Centurion B were fourth. Jordan Coyne, was fifth with her own Lazaro. Grand prix competition will continue at HITS Ocala as Sunday offers the $50,000 Purina Animal Nutrition Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis – another opportunity to qualify for the Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix, which will return to HITS Championship Weekend this fall at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York.

ared Petersen and his father, Derek, were walking on air Feb. 28. Their excitement not only stemmed from the fact that Jared had just piloted Titus 2:11 to a win in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, but also because it was his third grand prix win of the winter season. “I’m hoping that I don’t wake up anytime soon,” said Derek just moments after claiming the winner’s prizes with his son. “This horse just keeps surprising us and I hope we can keep this up.” Jared, who hails from Archer, Florida, has been riding Titus 2:11 for about a year and a half, but their meeting was not a fairytale– it was more of an accident turned perfect partnership. According to his father, Jared’s mount, now a nine-year-old Holsteiner gelding, was a “sweeten the deal” horse added onto the purchase of Derek’s Via Dolorosa in Germany in 2011. “He was seven, green and we thought he would just be a nice trade horse,” Derek admitted. Petersen admits that he was not expecting his son would find such success so soon with Titus 2:11. After riding to a few clears in small grand prix at the end of last season, Petersen was planning to have Jared ride in a few of the Thurs-

kin diseases in horses have many different causes, including pathogenic fungi. These tiny organisms can survive and multiply in a wider range of temperature and environments than most bacteria or viruses. Some fungi are parasites, causing skin or systemic infections in humans and animals, multiplying by sending out microscopic spores. The spores can survive in the environment for long periods of time. Following are examples of equine diseases caused by fungi and fungal-like organisms.

RINGWORM
The most common fungal infections in horses are the dermatophytes (parasitic fungi). Some of these are commonly found in soil (geophilic fungi) or in animals (zoophilic fungi), according to Dr. Leonel Mendoza (Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics, Michigan State University). “The most important of these in horses are Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton metagrophytes, and Trichophyton equinum. There are also a few unusual cases in horses caused by Microsporum canis, which is much more common in cats and dogs. I had a case in a horse that developed extensive lesions, and found that the barn cat was sleeping on top of the saddle blanket during the night,” says Mendoza.
“Sometimes we see unusual cases of Trichophtyton verrucosum which is more common in cattle. But because cattle and horses are often pastured together, horses may develop this type of ringworm. It can be difficult to diagnose in horses because the lesions are more inflammatory, with wet exudates rather than dry skin without hair.” The horse owner should have a veterinarian examine the horse for proper diagnosis. “The only way to get a diagnosis is by taking a skin scraping to send to a laboratory. They will look at it under a microscope, using 10% potassium hydroxide, and try to find filamentous hyphae, arthrospores, and invasion of the hair. The fungus goes inside the hair, damages it, and the hair falls out,” says Mendoza. When a horse has ringworm, the fungi can spread to other areas of the body, and to other animals and humans. “This
TREATMENT FOR RINGWORM If you have several horses with ringworm, the treatment is expensive because it takes a lot of medication to provide an adequate dose for such a large animal. Anti-ringworm drugs work well for dogs and cats, but the cost would be high for a horse. “The usual treatment I recommend, which is cheaper, is to use potassium iodine or sodium iodine solution (diluted to about 5 or 10% with water) to wash the skin,” says Mendoza. “These iodine compounds can be given orally, but you must use the prescription drug for animals. Your veterinarian could give advice on dosage. These drugs are used in combination with topical iodine treatment. The iodinebased shampoos can be used over the whole body if the

disease is insidious. The horse may rub against a fence and leave some spores on the fence. Humans may pick up the infection, leaning against the fence, putting their arms over the fence, or climbing over a fence. If a horse rubs and creates small cuts or abrasions in the skin, or a human has small nicks in the skin, dermatophytes can pass from the fences to other horses and humans,” he says. “These dermatophytes can survive in the environment a long time. We think these fungi originally lived in the ground, and then adapted to living on mammals. They are geophilic, which means they live in the soil. Some have adapted to living on humans and have become what we call anthropophilic (able to live on human skin) or zoophilic (living on animals). They often spread from one species to another, especially from animals to humans, and only rarely from humans to animals,” he says. “Most ringworm agents are zoonotic, which means they can travel from one animal to another species of animal, and from an animal to humans,” says Mendoza. If you have a pet or a horse with ringworm, be aware that you could get this infection, too. Children often get ringworm from dogs or cats that harbor Microsporum canis. Ringworm is often more common during winter in horses and cattle and can be readily spread from one animal to another. “One animal may be a carrier, and spreads it to the others,” he says.
horse has many areas affected,” he says. “There are vaccines that can be used to prevent and to cure ringworm infections in cattle, and these have been used in Norway, Sweden, Germany and Russia, but I don’t think they’ve been used in horses,” says Mendoza.
SUBCUTANEOUS INFECTIONS Some fungal and fungal-like infections are not on the skin, but just under the skin. “There are several of these, such as Conidiobolous, Basidiobolus (caused by fungi that live in the ground) and Pythium infections (usually acquired after contact with contaminated water in ponds). They are not really skin diseases; they are subcutaneous infections,” says Mendoza. “Conidiobolomycosis is usually found around the nostrils in horses, producing lesions inside the nostrils. The spores are on the grass, and if the horse has a small cut or abrasion in the nostrils, these spores can penetrate and cause infection if the horse encounters them while grazing. This type of infection is very common in the southern part of the U.S. and less common in the northern part of the country,” he says. “One of the less common types of infection that has been reported and described in horses is called pheohyphomycosis. This subcutaneous infection is caused by black fungi, and very unusual in horses. It produces small, bumpy lesions in the skin,” he says. www.horsecapitaldigest.com 15
Fungal Skin Problems “Another unusual type of subcutaneous fungal infection in horses is caused by mycetomas. All of these types of infection must have an opening in the skin to get started, and exposure to organic material such as plants that have mold, or wood splinters. If the fungi are there, and can penetrate the skin, they cause infection.” These types of fungal infections are difficult to treat. The affected area of skin usually must be cut out. Pythiosis is caused by Pythium insidiosum (a fungal-like organism) and was originally considered a rare disease in the United States. “About 20 years ago we started seeing cases, especially in the Gulf Coast states, and now we see thousands of cases annually in the southern part of the U.S. and some cases as far north as Wisconsin. Most of the cases I’ve seen have been from Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and other warm regions,” says Mendoza. “This organism likes warm weather. If the summer is hot and rainy, we generally see more cases of pythiosis,” he explains. “This fungus lives in the ground, and loves water. It is one of the water molds, in swampy areas. It goes through its life cycle in water, and produces spores with flagella that swim in the water. When it comes in contact with skin, if there is an opening in the skin, the spores will produce a hyphea (small tube) which can penetrate under the skin and cause infection.” A horse may get this disease when wading in water. Not all horses exposed to this pathogen become infected. “If 10 horses wade in the swamp, maybe one will be infected. Some may not have skin lesions. Or, certain horses may have a defect in their immune response, and are more vulnerable to this infection. There are many theories about how certain horses become infected,” he says. Treatment is difficult. “People have been using anti-fungal drugs with varied results. Some people think a treatment worked, and others say it never worked in the cases they treated. Treatment only works in 16 Horse Capital Digest • March 15, 2013

about 5% of cases—so we know pythiosis doesn’t respond very well to anti-fungal drugs. If your horse has this type of infection, he will probably die with it, unless treated with immunotherapy,” says Medoza. This is a relatively new way to treat this infection. “Pythium immunotherapy treats the infection by stimulating the immune response to act against the pathogen—enabling the horse’s body to fight it. It puts the immune system into better shape (stronger) and then the immune system itself can defeat the pathogen. A company in Texas, called Pan American Veterinary Laboratories (www.pavlab.com), makes this vaccine, and in horses it works about 70% of the time,” he says. It helps if this disease is recognized early and the vaccine given quickly. “If a horse can be vaccinated within the first 2 weeks of the infection, he has a 100% chance for cure. After that, the immunotherapy works in about 70% of cases. This is why an early diagnosis is very important,” he explains. Another treatment, which is more invasive, is surgical removal of the growths. “Surgery only works in the very early stages of the infection. If the growth has become huge, it won’t work,” says Mendoza.
FUNGAL INFECTIONS CAN’T BE PREVENTED There is no easy way to control or prevent these diseases in horses. “The fungi are everywhere—in the water, grass, soil, etc. The only suggestion I have for horse owners is if they see a small cut or lesion, call the veterinarian if it looks unusual,” he says. You should check it in the early stages, because if it’s any type of fungus you should not ignore it and assume that it will heal on its own. The earlier you diagnose any of these diseases, the better chance you have for a good resolution with proper treatment. HCD

Tax Tips for Equestrians By Cynthia McFarland
A
s April 15 looms, horse owners and equine business owners join the millions of other U.S. citizens preparing their tax returns. With many people around the country struggling due to the still-challenging economy, it only makes sense to hunt for every reasonable way to save money. That certainly includes paying less on your taxes whenever possible. For many equestrians, a great number of their equine expenses may actually be tax deductible. But how do you know what you can legitimately deduct and what you can’t? “The main thing is that you have the intent to make money and have a profit, otherwise it’s a hobby. Typically, the IRS wants to see a profit every few years. If you’re in business to make a profit, (almost) all of your expenses are deductible,” says Deborah Lawson of Crippen, Trice, Ford and Torres, LLP, an accounting firm in Ocala, Florida’s heart of horse country. If you own a broodmare you breed and sell her foals, this is considered an equine business. Perhaps you own a trusty old schoolmaster and use that horse regularly to give lessons, which people pay for. In that case, your equine expenses become deductible. If you take in outside horses for boarding and/or training, you’re in business to make a profit. Let’s say you have several well-bred, registered horses and show them regularly, as well as trail ride. You incur horserelated expenses on a regular basis throughout the year, but although you’re spending a significant amount of money, you’re a horse owner because you love them, not because you intend to make a profit. In this case, none of your equine expenses are considered deductible by the IRS. Many horse people take fabulous care of their equine partners, yet don’t tend to be as savvy when it comes to the financial end of things. If you operate any kind of horse-related business, you need to keep detailed records of all expenses, including feed/hay, veterinary and farrier bills, insurance, medication, tack and equipment, travel, meals/entertainment, advertising, gas, mileage and vehicle/trailer mainte-
nance costs, etc. Basically, you must keep track of any and all expenses related to your work with horses. “You need to have good records of your income and expenses, whether you use QuickBooks or a spreadsheet, like Excel,” notes Lawson. “Keep track of everything you spend that is related to the business. You also need to keep track of all mileage related to any equine business, and meals or entertainment, such as meeting with potential clients.” Not all expenses are 100% deductible, even
The most important thing is to be diligent about record keeping. It is also advisable to draw up a business plan.
if they’re completely related to the business. For example, let’s say you have some potential clients in town to look at a show horse you have for sale. You take the clients out for a fancy meal and pick up the tab. Go ahead and save those receipts, but realize that only 50% of meals and entertainment are allowed on deductions. Some people set up their equine business as an LLC or corporation. The business may own the truck and trailer or other equipment. Lawson explains that even in an LLC or corporation, the personal portion of expenses is not deductible. You may be able to depreciate equipment such as barns, fencing, tractor, mower, manure spreader, tack, etc. Typically, this is done over a period of years, but in some cases you may be able to write off all of a business-related purchase in the first year. This is an excellent example of why it’s important to work with a CPA who is experienced in equine business. They can often suggest legitimate deductions you might never have thought of. If you have any doubt about the qualifications of an accountant, ask him/her if they handle many farms or equine businesses. Better yet, ask horsemen you know, such as your veterinarian, farrier, trainer, or boarding stable owner, who prepares their tax returns. Personal recommendations are often the best way to find a reliable CPA. Bottom line, treat any equine business as seriously as you would a “regular” job. Save all receipts and maintain detailed records of both income and expenses. For many people, their horse business is a secondary source of income. That’s fine, but be sure to keep all expenses separate. “If you have any other business (or source of income), you’ll want to keep all equine expenses separate because these will go on a separate schedule on your tax return. In most cases, if you file an individual return, that will be Schedule F, which is a farm schedule,” says Lawson. The most important thing is to be diligent about record keeping. It is also advisable to draw up a business plan. “Keep good records and have a business plan showing what you plan to do over several years,” adds Lawson. “This shows you’re serious and will work in your favor if you are ever audited.” HCD www.horsecapitaldigest.com 21

Surviving the grueling 9-week circuit is getting easier By Shanna Bellingham

orse Shows in the Sun Ocala’s Post Time Farm has blossomed through the years into an impressive metropolis. Amenities, such as laundry services, dining and shopping, at the show make the 9-week stay easy for riders and trainers. In the middle of the farm, the vendor area spans down both sides of the dirt road. Farmvet, The Custom Fox and the Tack Shelter are expected vendors stocking the necessities in tack, stable supplies, horse health care, and riding apparel every year. But clothing boutiques, jewelry, farm supplies, tractors

and trailers, show jumps, and on-site custom items can also be found. And variety is not an issue. If you are looking to sell a used saddle, there’s a vendor for that. If you are looking for tall boots from Ireland, just walk down the dirt road toward the hunter rings. Looking for custom embroidered jackets to take back to the home farm or HITS Ocala souvenirs? Mona’s Embroidery and Engracing is the place to go; just look for the herd of Golden Retrievers. Allan Garray and his family have been setting up at HITS Ocala for 10 years. In that time, Garray has come to know many of the exhibitors by name. “It’s a big family. Our friends are the other cendors, our
Metropolis displaying garments on a rack. “And I like the type of people that come from wherever they come from.” Some vendors expressed their dislike of the shopping growth. However, Riley said she “loves it.” “It’s not easy, you do have to come up with new ideas and keep changing, (but) competition is America,” she said. First time HITS Ocala exhibitor Darcy LaChance from Ontario, CA, with Golden Gate Equestrian said having everything within walking distance, and vendors providing the necessities, is convenient.

friends are the other trainers and owners of the different farms that we’ve known a long time,” the Connecticut resident said. With customers all over the world, Garray credits HITS Ocala for allowing the business to serve so many. “It’s a nice, comfortable atmosphere,” he said. Wild Horses, a ladies clothing boutique owned by Elaine Riley complimented the “positive environment” HITS provides for bringing vendors like her back year after year. The Massachusetts resident has been a vendor with HITS since its beginning. “It’s a good place to do business and I like the family atmosphere,” Riley said,
“(If) I forgot my crop, every single place here sells a crop,” LaChance explained. Westwind Farms of Knoxville, TN, riders Haley Gassel and Chandler Hawk made their way around the shops before a day of riding in search of a new martingale. Gassel thought she would have found what she was looking for at her first stop, but said she ended up with so many options, she couldn’t decide. “Variety definitely helps,” Gassel said. Hawk said she thought it was she liked having so many options, and “not be limited.” And alternating sale was also helpful, she added. “It’s awesome because it’s not only tack; it’s clothing and tractors and jumps,” Hawk said. “It’s kind of like everything you need for your farm.” HCD www.horsecapitaldigest.com 23
