inning was twice as sweet for Jared Petersen and Titus 2:11. After earning the blue in the previous week’s $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, Petersen piloted Titus 2:11 to another win Jan. 24 in the $50,000 Strongid® C 2X™ Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis. “I have to give all the glory to God. Without him none of this would be possible,” said a faithful Petersen after his victory. Petersen admits that he named his horse after a bible verse hoping that people would ask what the verse says – “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people”. Foster. A series of tests and challenges narrowed the starting list down to eight for the jump-off. “I thought it was great sport today,” said Foster. “A course starts with just a sheet of paper, but when it’s all said and done, and the end result is an exciting class that rode well, with good horses and good riders, that’s what makes this all special. I think Jared rode great and he deserved it.” Petersen admits that Foster’s course was both tricky and technical. “I don’t think it was as big as some of the other courses we’ve jumped, but there were some lines where I couldn’t really leave strides out where I would have liked, but it rode well and worked out great,” he said.

They rode a neat and fast jumpoff to set a new time to beat at 46.78 seconds, which would go untouched for the rest of the jump-off. “Andre was really fast,” said Petersen. “I knew if I touched the reins anywhere then I wouldn’t make it happen. I did the five [strides] where everyone else did six, and I think that’s what really made it happen.” Four rides remained as Tricia O’Connor of Connecticut and Michael Kirby’s KT Undercover posted a clear round in 51.32 seconds to earn fourth place. Karen Cudmore of Omaha, Nebraska and Blair Cudmore’s Shea, defending champions of the $100,000 Sullivan GMC Truck Grand Prix, presented by Great American Insurance Group, retired from the jump-off to earn eighth place, while Harold Chopping of Southern Pines, North Carolina and Paddy Ann Burns’ Calando Z and Kyle Timm Andre was really fast. of Apex, North Carolina and Apex Equestrian Center’s Wadisson were sixth I knew if I touched the and seventh, respectively. reins anywhere then I Petersen and his nine year-old Holsteiner received a year’s supply of free wouldn’t make it hapStrongid® C 2X™ product for their vicpen. First to return in the jump-off was Laura Linback of Mundelin, Illinois aboard Woodrun’s HH Dauphin. Linback rode conservatively and concentrated on posting a clear round. She succeeded and set the Great American Time To Beat at 50.60 seconds. In the end, Linback’s clear round secured the third-place ribbon. Andre Thieme of Plau Am See, Germany was next to show aboard his own Quonschbob. Thieme, the winner of the 2011 Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix, was looking for his first victory this season and thought he might have it when he and Quonschbob shaved three seconds off the time to beat to take the lead with a clear round in 47.53 seconds. Patty Stovel of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania and Carigor Z were next to show and were able to catch Thieme’s time in their own 47.50 seconds. Two rails, however, came down for eight faults and sat them fifth. Petersen, the 20-year-old rider from Archer, Florida, was next to show and, despite proved that he and Titus

Hunter Prix Success at HITS Ocala
P
atty Stovel of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania pocketed a $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix earlier in the season at HITS Ocala and returned to the winner’s circle for the second time on Feb. 24. She and Michelle Durpetti’s Kenya rode to a score of 171 with Shachine Belle of Farmington, Connecticut pressuring her in second with a 170 aboard Mr. & Mrs. Ernest M. Oare’s Tryonite. The Devoucoux Hunter Prix was held in the Hunter Stadium the previous week and returned to the popular Outside Course to present a track designed by Timmy Hott of Cumming Iowa. “The Outside Oourse rides really well and all the options keep things interesting,” said Stovel of the newly designed ring. “The bank adds just enough difficulty to make the class fun.” Stovel is no stranger to sitting atop Kenya as she sold the nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood to his current owner and was asked to continue riding him. Dupretti and Stovel believe Kenya has what it takes to be competitive in the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final during HITS Championship Weekend this fall in Saugerties, New York and are pointing the gelding toward qualifying and competing in the big-money event. “He was great today and has a really good chance of being competitive in Saugerties,” said Stovel. Belle, who has ridden to two Devoucoux Hunter Prix wins aboard Robin Swinderman’s INXS this season, rode two new top-five finishers this week. She and Tryonite led the first round with a score of 88 before earning an 82 in the Amy Zettler on second. Belle also rode Michael Renker’s Wicked to fourth. Therese Peck and Cammy Turgon’s Scoop finished third with a score of 167 and Megan Wexler stepped from the grand prix to the hunter ring for a fifth-place finish aboard Kathryn Mittauer’s Allawishus. They earned a pair of 82s for a 164 total. Devoucoux, the makers of fine French saddles, will continue to present weekly hunter prix, which represent the only way for hunter riders to punch their ticket to the prestigious Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final during HITS Championship Weekend in Saugerties in September.
$$5,000 3’ HUNTER PRIX Amy Zettler of Aldie, Virginia admits that her numberone goal for HITS Ocala this year is to qualify for the HITS $250,000 Hunter Prix Final again in Saugerties and to place higher than she did last year. three top-five qualifying finishes so far this season, including her Feb. 23 $5,000 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix win. Lena Rae Reeb of Weston, Connecticut boasts four topten finishes in the HITS Hunter Prix this season at HITS Ocala. After riding to the top in the first-ever Children’s Hunter Pony Final in Saugerties last year, Reeb is now pointing Jamie Ringel’s Private Ryan at the HITS Hunter Prix Final. She earned an 81 and an 84 for a total of 165 and second place this weekend, and was also fourth aboard Sonia Ramirez’s Amsterdam with a 163. Dorian Cieslak of Altamonte Springs, Florida rounded out the top three with her own VDL Uniek, and Nicolas Horgan was fifth on Winsor Farm Sales, Inc.’s Captain 33. Zettler combined an 88 and a 79 for a 167 and the win this weekend. “Glad Rags is just a true winner,” she said of the 10-year-old Thoroughbred-Warmblood cross gelding that she has owned for three years. “He was coming off of a threemonth break at the start of Ocala and he stepped back into the ring and started winning. We only jump him at horse shows and he loves doing it. He likes to be the center of attention.” Glad Rags is Virginia-bred by Steve and Sally McVeigh of
Middleburg, who are still very involved with the gelding’s Patty Stovel successes. “I call them after every class – it is so nice to have on Kenya breeders who care about their horse,” said Zettler. After finishing second the week before in the Hunter Stadium, Zettler, trained by Peter Foley and Dale Crittenberger, was eager to return to HITS Ocala’s all-new Outside Course this weekend. She admits that the new ring is perfect practice for the setting of the final, which will take place on the popular Outside Course at HITS-on-the-Hudson during HITS Championship Weekend September 6-8. T
racy Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas rode to a HITS Ocala hat trick with MTM Farm’s MTM Timon on Feb. 21, picking up her third grand prix win of the winter circuit. She and the 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding that carried her to three top-twenty finishes in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix, and countless grand prix victories, were the best of 37 in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis. Fenney characterized the course as fair for $25,000 and was one of eight to produce first-round clears and advance to the jump-off. Course designer Danny Foster of Milton, Ontario built a 13-obstacle course, which included Tracy Fenney a triple and double combination. The jump-off saw four in a row go aboard MTM Timon clean and Michael Hughes of Allendale, New Jersey aboard Christina Fried’s Luxina got it started. The 17year-old rider posted a time of 45.16 seconds, which was quickly bested by Kristen VanderVeen of St. Charles, Illinois with Bull Run Jumpers’ Bull Run’s Eternal. She finished in 45.09 seconds, hinting that the class results would be determined by the clock. With only one of her two mounts advancing, Fenney had to play her speed card early in the second round. Third to ride, she and Timon crushed the Great American Time To Beat by almost two full seconds and crossed the beam in 53.58 to sit first. She then waited, fingers crossed, for the remaining five trips, but the code had been cracked. Harold Chopping of Southern Pines, North Carolina produced one more clear round with Paddy Ann Burns’ Calando Z, but

Fenney has experienced surplus grand prix success at HITS Ocala in the past several years and swept the high-performance jumper classes during Week II this winter. She has her two top mounts, MTM Timon and MTM Centano, primed for Sunday’s $50,000 Strongid® C 2X™
Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, as well as an anticipated return to HITS Championship Weekend’s Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix this fall. She and husband Mike McCormick, however, may be thinking of taking their success west this year. “We own all of our horses, so we have some freedom as far as our schedule is concerned,” said Fenney. “We are considering taking a trip to California this season for the [AIG Thermal] $1 Million class out there.” While some chase $1 million glory on the West Coast, East Coast riders will have their chance to ride for serious money during the same weekend. The $100,000 Sullivan GMC Truck Grand Prix, presented by Great American Insurance Group, will return to HITS Ocala March 17.
Canada was well represented in the $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome and was the home country of three of the top five riders. Kim Farlinger and Kelley Robinson, both hailing from Ontario, were one-two in the 1.40m event – Farlinger on her own Caprice van de Brouweshoeve and Robinson in the irons of Cimarron Farm’s Barretta. Farlinger topped 28 contenders for the win. Also from Ontario, Jean-Nicholas Goyette rode to fourth aboard his own Delgado Van Neerhoff.

Denise Wilson of Dousman, Wisconsin was third on Blue Gate Farm, LLC’s Aconito 5, while Ocala, Florida local My Weber capped the top five aboard AvailableJumpers.com’s Available Aphrodite. Brook Ledge Horse Transportation will continue to present a weekly jumper class throughout the three weeks remaining in the circuit. Aside from the winner’s purse, Brook Ledge Open Welcome riders also compete for the Brook Ledge Rider Bonus, which includes a $1,500 shipping credit for the rider who accumulates the most points in those classes throughout the HITS Ocala circuit. Navigating the paths

Speedway ost Time Farm may be a horse show facility, scooters, golf carts, dirt bikes, bicycles and vehicles are used more than horses for transportation. Dogs, horses, children and exhibitors are filling the grounds and pathways of the 300-plus-acres from dawn to dusk like a busy city street. Navigating the traffic safely can pose a challenge. The key, according to Dever Golf Car Sales and Rentals employee Wade Lambert, is speed. “The most important thing is slow down,” Lambert said. “Horses have the right-of-way.” Throughout the grounds, there are signs signaling speed limits and warnings. By many of the barns, it’s horses and golf carts only. Tractors and maintenance vehicles are the only large vehicles permitted. hile many horsemen dream of buying a turn-key farm, it’s not always a possibility. Pine boards, treated or not, will not hold up to wear and tear caused by horses, and they break easily.” Four by six-inch round pressure-treated posts are set on tenfoot center, instead of the traditional eight-foot, so this also saves on cost. Ensor found that he could cut the cost-per-foot nearly in half by doing his own fence installation. It’s basically impervious to insects and rot, and most of his pastures. Hills give them a good work out,” Ensor noted, adding that you don’t want hills to be so steep as to be problematic. In addition, gentle contours, as opposed to steep rises, make it easier to observe horses in other pastures and paddocks.

work before it was livable, the horse quarters, an old bank barn, was actually in overall good shape. One section of the 24-stall barn had been built in the 1700’s, and another section was added on in the early 1800’s. “Some bank barns can be dark and damp, but we don’t have that problem,” said Ensor. “The people who built this barn spent time planning it. It’s extremely bright and airy for an old cattle barn, which is what it originally was.” First, the practical and safety concerns of wiring and plumbing were addressed. “Anything that is not three-wire grounded with a plastic outer cover should be replaced ASAP, and make sure a horse cannot get to it,” said Ensor. “Make sure existing wiring is not being pinched anywhere; settling structures have the potential to pinch a wire. Wiring that becomes hidden may be problematic. If the rest of the wiring is newish and looks to be professionally installed, it may be fine, but suspect wiring should be replaced.” For safety and energy efficiency, Ensor went with florescent bulbs in the barn aisle and compact florescent able to sit here and look at the fireplace and think that 300 bulbs in the stalls. Ensor is still able to use the hay fields for grazing, but pulls horses off these pastures when the growing season starts in the spring. He was able to justify the expense of buying a used baler, mower, rake and tetter in one season of putting up his own hay. He also buys straw and alfalfa from local farmers straight out of the field, which is another big savings. Because a majority of the mushrooms in the United States are grown close by, farmers in the area are actually able to sell their used straw muck to the mushroom farms. This solves the major problem of manure disposal, which most horse farms have to contend with.

Every working farm needs a tractor, but take into consideration the future work you will need to do with that tractor before making a purchase. For example, if you’re planning on baling hay or bedding, you will need adequate horsepower. “If you’re thinking of making hay, the baler, rake and tetter won’t need a big tractor, but the hay mower will,” said Ensor. “The weight of the tractor and the power at the PTO is very important, along with at least nine forward speeds. You want the ability to safely move a four to five ton loaded hay wagon. Four wheel drive is a must, especially if you have turf tires, which I recommend, and a front end loader is also a must. Size it accordingly, the bigger the better. Tractors hold their value well, so don’t skimp on equipment when starting out. If you use John Deere, you can save 20% with the NTRA program.” Repair and maintenance are always issues on a farm, but even more so if you’re buying a fixer-upper property. Come up with a Game Plan: ■ Be willing to consider farms in more than one region. ■ Buy the best quality land you can afford as this supports your “crop” – horses. ■ Consider horse facilities before housing if you need to move horses onto the property quickly. ■ When renovating, don’t “overbuild” the horse facilities unless you plan to stay on the property for many years. Overbuilt facilities can be a liability if you decide to sell. You may not realize your financial investment and the property may linger on the market. ■ Have soil tested & fertilize & seed accordingly before bringing horses in. ■ Think ahead & determine future needs before buying tractors & equipment. ■ Barter with neighboring farms whenever possible for hay, bedding, mowing, etc. ■ Constantly look at other people’s farms to see what they’re doing. handy with tools unless you’re willing to hire a full-time maintenance person. He discovered that building materials can often be purchased at reasonable prices from smaller, family-owned saw mills. Farming areas usually have regular equipment auctions and sales where you can pick up items much more reasonably than at a dealer. Bartering with other farmers can also be a money-saving option, Ensor adds. You may be able to trade hay and/or straw, or work out arrangements for a nearby farmer with hay equipment to cut and bale your fields for a percentage of the finished hay. “If you live in a good farming area, get to know neighboring farmers,” he suggested. “If they see that you work your farm like they do theirs, they will go out of their way for you with advice and services.” HCD

continued from page 15 The flow of traffic is something that comes along with life at a horse show, many exhibitors agreed. Deidre Catani explained the watering tanks and tractors are a must. “They have to water and drag the ring; it is what it is,” the Pembroke, MA, resident said. “So, if you see them coming, they give you a heads up, you move out of the way.” Catani, of River Wind Farms, has been coming to HITS Ocala since she was a child. She finds the layout of Post Time Farm to be convenient and conventional. Like many, she has two large dogs that make themselves at home around their barn. Catani and clients of River Wind take advantage of scooters and golf carts to quickly move from barn-to-ring. “I love it; it makes a lot of sense,” Catani said. “I really like the whole set-up; it’s a little bit spread out.” From what she sees at the far left zone of the property is less traffic and people being considerate of their surroundings. Occasionally, there are those with a lead foot, she acknowledged. “I think that they should keep in mind there are kids and dogs; and where do you have to go at 100-miles-per-hour that’s that important,” Catani said. At the front entrance of Post Time Farm, the barn for Patty Stovel Training is on the main road across from the jumper one ring and schooling area. Vehicles, horses and large trucks are constantly meeting, which Sarah Lane, from Philadelphia, said she experiences often as she takes horses from the barn to their courses. Separate pathways for the various modes of transportation help, but could be improved and expanded on, she said. There are a few issues regarding safety, Lane said, she’s encountered in the recent past. “I’m not opposed to kids driving the golf carts and the dirt bikes and stuff, but they have to use their brain,” she gently

explained. “You can’t run up behind a horse; that’s just common sense. I think most people are pretty good at it.” Lane’s other concern is the lack of lighting on certain paths to and from rings. Night classes without proper and efficient lighting may cause problems one day. “Basically, I had to follow a golf cart with a flashlight on a horse,” she said. “I think that if you’re going to have classes like that, you have to make it assessable. That’s even a safety thing, because if I fell off, nobody would see me.” Lambert responded to some of the lighting issues, as far as Dever and golf carts are concerned. Most of the golf carts sold or rented from Dever have headlights or lighting fixtures on the vehicle. From his experience, everyone at the show has a common understanding of what is expected at a horse show facility. “It’s personal responsibility,” Lambert said. HCD

Florida Department of Agriculture And Consumer Services Issues Quarantine Order Tallahassee, FL – The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced seven positive cases of Equine Herpes Virus 1 (EHV-1) confirmed in horses in Florida. Six of the confirmed cases are linked to the Horse Shows in the Sun (HITS) event in Ocala. The department issued a quarantine order to the entire venue hosting the HITS event and other areas where exposed horses have traveled. The first positive case of the virus was referred to the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine after showing clinical neurological signs on February 20. The horse is in stable condition and continues to be treated at the University of Florida. Six additional horses have tested positive in the last 24 hours. Four are located at Miles Away Farm in Loxahatchee and were linked to the HITS event. One horse is located at Redfield Farm in Ocala and was also linked to the HITS event. One horse located at Tequestrian Farm in Wellington is not believed to be associated with the HITS event. None of the six most recent cases have shown neurological signs at this time. With evidence of widespread exposure, the HITS show grounds in Ocala has been placed under quarantine through March 14. The department is currently implementing standard protocols for surveillance and quarantine release measures. Horses under quarantine will be monitored for signs of the virus, including fever and nasal discharge. The department is working with management, trainers and veterinarians on the site to help prevent the further spread of disease. Other areas where horses exposed to the virus at HITS are currently located are also under quarantine. Quarantined farms and venues include: ■ Black Forest Farm, St. Augustine ■ Brookmore Farm, Oviedo ■ FEI Tent at Wellington Show Grounds, Wellington ■ Flutterby Farm, Ocala ■ Foxwood Farms, Pinellas Park ■ Kings Ridge Farm, Reddick ■ Littlewood Farm, Wellington ■ Miles Away Farm, Loxahatchee ■ Montera Farm, Ocala ■ Redfield Farm, Ocala ■ Tequestrian Farm, Wellington ■ Up Country Farm/Synergy Farm, Ocala EHV-1 is a contagious virus that affects horses and can result in neurological disease, respiratory disease, abortion and neonatal death. The virus is spread by direct horse-to-horse contact via the respiratory tract through nasal secretions or contact with physical objects contaminated with the virus. The virus does not affect humans. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services recommends the equine community practice prudent bio-security on their farms to avoid the spread of this or any other disease. Suspected cases of EHV-1 should be reported to the department by calling (850) 410-0900 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or (800) 342-5869 after hours and on weekends. Information about the outbreak is available at www.FreshFromFlorida.com and will be updated daily. A Glimpse into the HITS Staff By Charlotte A. Brunson
Jerry Dougherty t the age of ten Jerry Dougherty began horseback riding, a sport that he has developed a love for. Dougherty worked his way up from a beginner rider to a talented hunter and moved all the way to Grand Prix jumping. For the past eighteen years Dougherty has been the Technical Coordinator for HITS. Along with the title comes numerous tasks that include coordinating all of the restaurants together to be efficient, being aware of the on site vendors, overseeing the course design and layout, attempting to keep every horse and rider happy and ensuring that HITS runs as smooth as possible. “If I do my job well, it can be easy” claims Dougherty. He gives credit to his staff and says “It is the hard workers that are all over HITS that make my days easier.” Through all of the hustle of the horse shows he coordinates Dougherty occasionally gets to catch a glimpse of the performances in the ring. Although Dougherty is unable to decide on a favorite event at HITS he does smile and comment “I like really good Hunters.” Dougherty looks forward to the week full of events and competition but especially enjoys “The large number of participants on Fridays and Saturdays and the spectators to the “special classes” on Sundays.” With eleven rings that have horses competing all weekend HITS customers are sure to enjoy the events that Dougherty and his team of remarkable staff work hard on year round to coordinate.

waltz through the HITS VIP tent reveals sculptures poised atop the tables. Those who enter know the tent oasis for mouthwatering morsels, heart pounding ringside views and now sculptures that represent a moment frozen in time. The two limited edition sculptures that prime the tables were created specifically for HITS Ocala 2013. The first sculpture Chasseur Cavalier is from the “Hunter Jumper” series. “The Chasseur Cavalier sculpture captures the innocence of young girl landing a jump in her first competition”, explains artist Jim Moody. Au Repos is from the “Unbridled Series” reflects the power and grace of a horse in a state of repose. Both are magnificently designed to embody intricate details and movement. Ocala husband and wife artists, Jim and Cindy Moody of Moody’s Wild Ideas, designed and sculpted the life like works of art. Jim, an attorney by day, finds release and solace in creating sculptures. “I really enjoy working with my hands, it’s relaxing and energizing at the same time.” Jim and Cindy are zealous with prospects to capture beauty that surrounds them. Jim explains, “An idea will come to my head and I work the details. Usually comes together fairly quickly over a few days.” Jim likes to bring personality into his work. Jim admits, “When we come up with an idea there is usually a reason why or there is a story behind it.” Jim then goes to work in his quaint cottage studio, passionately sculpting until the clay takes shape. Jim defines, “Art is perfect if you enjoy it.” Cindy chimes in “He is just amazing, he works until it is finished.” Moody’s Wild Ideas is a true partnership. Cindy paints the sculptures, handles the website and manages the online business. Cindy smiles, “It’s a lot of fun for us. We have creative attitudes that are in tune. We like things that have function and are useful. We brain storm a lot!” Jim Moody at work in his studio www.horsecapitaldigest.com 29

currently working on two sculptures one is an Indian chief on a horse and the other will be a surprise to rival any University of Florida or Florida State University fan. The opportunity to display the sculptures at HITS grew from attending the Ocala/Marion County Chamber & Economic Partnership’s Ag/Equine Committee’s fall event Making Horse Cent$. The event’s purpose was to connect area business leaders to the equine industry through education and efficient advertising techniques. Moody’s proclaim, “We were just amazed by all the activities. We were able to meet with publications, event promoters and equine business. We met Cindy Oatman of HITS, and the opportunity arose to place the sculptures in the VIP tent.” Take a gander at these beauties they will enhance any living room, office or tack room. March 8: TRF Open House at Lowell Correctional Institution Farm The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, the largest organization in the world dedicated to the rescue, retirement, and adoption of Thoroughbred racehorses, and the Florida Department of Corrections and Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’Association, invites the public to attend an open house at its Lowell Correctional Institution’s Second Chances Farm. This free event will take place on Friday, March 8 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. with a brief formal program at noon. “We want to offer our supporters, local leadership, the Thoroughbred racing community, potential adopters, and the general public a chance to see our life-changing racehorse retirement and vocational program up close,” said Lisa Craig, TRF’s Annual Fund Director who is coordinating the event. “We appreciate the partnership of The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and partners in the Ocala community and their help to provide inmates employability skills to prepare them for integration back in the community,” said Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Mike Crews. “It is a win-win for all involved.” The farm is currently home to 42 ex-racehorses who receive supervised care from non-violent female offenders participating in a vocational training program in Equine Care Technology. After their release, many graduates of the Second Chances program have used their new skills to help acquire jobs within the equine industry and beyond, and are often quick to credit their equine teachers with helping turn their lives around. The open house will include a meet-andgreet with the horses, demos of adoptable horses ridden by current offender-students, farm tours, and brief formal program that will feature a recent Second Chances graduate who is successfully employed in the local equine industry. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free but an RSVP is requested. Please visit www.trfinc.org for details. 44 Horse Capital Digest • March 8, 2013
