In 1997, Ocala/Marion County Horse Capital of the World® and Horse Capital of the World® were trademarked by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association. Ever since, the marks have become synonymous with the FTBOA and its Association services. While others periodically try its use, by trademark and literally, the county is the Horse Capital with more horses and ponies than any other in the U.S. and Florida ranks third as a state in its horse population. FTBOA trademarked the phrase to create a brand identity for the area and the services it promotes related to equines. The diversity of breeds and disciplines make the area an ideal setting for any horse fanatic, casual horse lover or for services catering to the horse world. Horses in Florida are more than pretty scenery in a pasture. They are economic drivers for our county and state. The concentration of equines – particularly the thoroughbred SPECIAL 2021 FALL EDITION

breeding, training and sales industry in Central Florida – is strongly supported by a network of equine services, such as specialized veterinarians, feed and tack retailers, blacksmith, equine dentists, feed mills and major horse transportation companies by land and by air. This makes Ocala a great place to enjoy equines with its opportunities to attend world-class horse shows and events, equine venues, recreational activities and farm tours at a variety of venues, farms and showgrounds. Visitors have the chance to go on a farm tour, take a trail ride through our numerous parks and national forest, enjoy a carriage ride, learn polo, visit an equine museum or gallery, attend the world’s leading two-year-olds in-training thoroughbred sales or even watch a horse train at Ocala Breeders’ Sales or wager on simulcast horse races from the state’s tracks and from across the country. The choices are limitless and local citizens are a daily part of the one-of-a-kind experience that only the Horse Capital of the World® can bring.

Thoroughbred Makeover Taps Retrained Florida-breds start at a Florida track before joining the retraining program. The Retired Racehorse Project, a 501(c)3 charitable organization, created the Thoroughbred Makeover to showcase the trainability and talent of off-track thoroughbreds. The competition is intended to inspire good trainers to become involved in transitioning horses to second careers, and the National Symposium serves to educate the people involved in the care, training, and sale of these horses to responsible owners. UF Vet Conference Focuses on Healthy Horses The UF College of Veterinary Medicine’s 14th annual Healthy Horses Conference is an annual free virtual educational event with a focus on successful equine health care. Lectures are delivered by University of Florida faculty from the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, and UF/IFAS extension throughout the entire month of October. This year’s topics include protecting your horse from the equine herpes virus, caring for senior horses, how to listen to your horse’s heart, common equine eye emergencies, toxic plants for Florida horses, and an update on anhidrosis. The 13th annual conference was a huge success in 2020 drawing more participants than ever with 500 registrants. “The availability of virtual participation, as well as an absence of typical conference fees, resulted in an unprecedented geographical representation,” UF extension specialist Dr. Sally DeNotta said. “For the first time ever, the conference reached an international audience, with participants from Central and South America, Europe and the UK.” To participate, Sign Up Here.

Saddlebreds, Hackneys, Morgans, Arabians and Dutch Harness Horses Take Center Stage The newly launched Ocala International Horse Show will be held October 26 to 30, making it the first horse show for the American Saddlebred, Hackney Pony and Roadsters, with open breed classes for Morgan, Arabian, the Dutch harness horse and other performance show horse breeds to be hosted at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala. Florida-breds Make Florida Racing Did you know Florida-bred thoroughbreds won 31.5% of races run at the Gulfstream Park Championship Meet? This demonstrates how vital Florida-breds are to the success of Gulfstream Park throughout the year—not just during the Spring/Summer season. Additional good news for Florida breeders—66% of those Florida-bred winners during the Gulfstream Park Championship Meet were sired by Florida stallions.
