Outperforming Opportunities

T

he New Year typically brings with it resolutions by many of us hoping to improve ourselves and of course, wishes that the upcoming year will be better than the last. While diets and days at the gym result from many a resolution, many of us count on good news to help us complete the latter part of the New Year formula regarding this year and the improved lifestyle we are hoping for with the The Jockey Club Annual Report change of calendars. So whether you’re of Mares Bred shows that Florida stallions are the only group among reading this column from your couch or those in the top ten thoroughbred while toiling away on a producing states or provinces in North tread-mill, here’s my America to produce more live foals in contribution to providing some good news 2012 compared to 2011 early in the year. As thoroughbred breeders in Florida, you may have already noticed that there are several new stallions coming to Marion County for the 2013 breeding season. Improving the menu of studs from which to choose this year are Biondetti, Fappie’s Clown, Field Commission, Jackson Bend, Korona Kid, Overdriven, Seeking the Dia, Stratford Hill and Thunder Moccasin. Add to this list of new stallions Benny the Bull, who returns to a Florida stallion barn after a hiatus in Brazil and Double Honor coming back to Florida from New Mexico, and the count comes to at least 12 new studs that will be here this season. And it’s not just the number of stallions moving to Florida that give us confidence as we proceed into 2013. Looking at last year’s Florida-breds on the track and we see that Florida breeders had a record-breaking year with 12 Grade 1 stakes winners, eclipsing the former record of 11 from just last year. A closer inspection of the recently published American Graded Stakes Standings for 2012 reveals that Florida-breds won 38 of the 349 graded stakes, or 10.9%. Taking data from the Jockey Club’s report of Annual Florida Registered Foal Crop for the years JOHN D. FILER PHOTO

2009 and 2010, (the years that produced a great many of the runners in 2012), and we see that there were 5,306 foals born in Florida during those two years which made up 8.85% of the 59,958 foals born in the US in those two years. So Florida breeders again outperformed their opportunities. DOYLE JOINS FEP

We are also proud to introduce the newest member of the Florida Equine Publication staff in Declan Doyle, who has joined our team as associate editor. A graduate of the University of North Florida and the Race Track Industry Program at the University of Arizona, Doyle joins the FEP team after serving five years as the stallion director at the Florida division of Vinery Stud, located in Summerfield, Fla. There he directed, administered and oversaw the daily operation of the Florida stallion division of the international operation. Doyle also served at Bridlewood Farm in Ocala, selling stallion seasons and shares. Doyle has worked in similar capacities at Sequel Stallions in Orange Lake, FL and at Pin Oak Stud in Versailles, Ky. Earlier in his career he served as Public Relations Director for Dogwood Stable in Aiken, South Carolina and while at the U of A, served as an intern at Kildangan Stud and Godolphin Racing based in Kildare, Ireland. As associate editor at Florida Equine Publications, Doyle will be responsible for the daily production of Wire to Wire and will be a contributor and editor for all other publications. He will also assist in the marketing and public relations of the FTBOA. “I am excited to be a part of Florida Equine Publications and the FTBOA,” Doyle said. “It is a great opportunity to join the award-winning staff at FEP and work with the FTBOA in promoting all of the exciting aspects that are part of the thoroughbred breeding and racing industry in Declan Doyle Florida at this time.” ■

Florida’s Romacaca Takes Different Path to South Beach Win gether but Romacaca got the lead and appeared on her way to victory. The victory brought Romacaca’s career winning ratio to an amazing 50 percent as the South Beach was her 16th win from 32 starts. So I just let her fall out of there and place herself where she was comfortable. When it was time to call on her, she quickened up and prevailed.” Sent off as the 3-1 favorite in the South Beach, Romacaca paid $8.40 to win, $5.00 to place and $3.20 to show. It was also the tenth career stakes victory for Romacaca, who was claimed by Calabrese for $25,000 in April of 2009.

Fans Meet Little Mike at Gulfstream

The popular Eclipse Award Champion Awesome Feather has been retired from racing. Awesome Feather began her career in the Stanley Gold barn racing in the colors of her breeder, Fred Brei’s Jacks or Better Farm, Inc. of Ocala. They unveiled their star on May 1, 2010, Kentucky Derby Day, with a 5¾-length victory in a 4½ furlong maiden special weight at Calder. From there, Awesome Feather rolled through an unbeaten juvenile season with a victory in the J J’s Dream Stakes followed by a sweep of the threerace Florida Stallion Stakes for 2-yearold fillies. Her 8 ¼-length triumph in the final leg, the $365,000 My Dear Girl division of the series, made her the public’s choice in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). tory to secure the Eclipse Award for Champion Two-Year-Old Filly of 2010. Two days after her Breeders’ Cup tour de force, Awesome Feather was purchased by Adena Springs for $2.3 million at the November Sale at Fasig-Tipton. After recovering from a tendon injury, she returned in October of 2011 with an easy win in an overnight stakes at Aqueduct for new owner, Frank Stronach, and new trainer, Chad Brown. That set her up for her next Grade 1 victory in the Gazelle Stakes over Thanksgiving weekend. Awesome Feather added two more stakes victories to her resume in 2012, including an emphatic 5¾ length win in the rich Sunshine Millions Distaff at Gulfstream Park. She also earned a 108 Beyer Speed Figure in her penultimate start, the Nasty Storm Stakes, which she dominated by 11¼ lengths. “Working for Bobby [Frankel] I was around several of the Stronach’s best Florida-bred runners and Awe- Little Mike some Feather was right up there with the best of them,” said trainer Chad Brown. “She is a rare horse to overcome a tendon injury like she did, and maintain top form. Her lone loss came in the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1). She will start her next career at Mr. and Mrs. Stronach’s Adena Springs Farm in Paris, Kentucky. Breeding plans have not yet been finalized.

Breeders' Cup Turf and Arlington Million champion Little Mike welcomed 50 of his fans Dec. 17 at Gulfstream Park as part of a raffle to raise money for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund and Thoroughbred Aftercare. The 50 raffle winners were taken on an escorted tour of the barn area before stopping at the barn of Dale Romans, trainer of Little Mike. Romans, along with Little Mike's breeder Carlo Vaccarezza, answered questions from the fans before leading Little Mike out of his stall so fans could take pictures with him. Romans, honored recently with the Turf Publicists of America's Big Sport of Turfdom Award, then led the crowd down his shedrow explaining the care that goes into each Thoroughbred. Romans, Vaccarezza and their staff offered guests cold drinks and snacks throughout the tour. Daryl LaRouche, one of the raffle winners, said, "This is extremely gracious of Mr. Romans and Mr. Vaccarezza to allow us to come back here and meet them and Little Mike. I think it's wonderful for fans to see something like this. Gulfstream, Mr. Romans and everyone have been extremely kind." Romans was asked questions about Little Mike, retired Preakness winner Shackleford, turf racing and how much it costs to own and race a horse. Romans praised his help several times throughout the morning When asked what his biggest achievement was so far, Romans said it was being able to work with many of the same people he started with in his career. He also joked, "Surviving 25 years." Little Mike, a winner of five races (four stakes) at Gulfstream, is currently being prepared by Romans for a trip to Dubai in March for a possible start in the $5 million Golden Sheema. Romans told his guests the gelding may run first in the Gulfstream Park Turf on Feb. 9.

Stallions Backtalk and Motovato will be standing the 2013 breeding season at Bridlewood Farm in Ocala. Backtalk is a multiple graded stakes winner having taken the Grade 2 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga and the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs at age two; and the Sportsmans Paradise Stakes at Delta Downs at age three. Backtalk entered stud for the first time in 2012 and will have his first foals in 2013. "We're excited about Backtalk and Motovato joining the stallion roster at Bridlewood,” Bridlewood farm manager George Isaacs said. “Backtalk was a consistently game 2-year-old and 3-year-old that proved his racing class. He's out of a stakes-winning and graded stakes-producing Affirmed mare, and we all know how important Affirmed is as a broodmare sire.” A son of Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones and out of the Affirmed mare Apasionata Sonata, Backtalk will stand for a fee of $3,000 when the foal stands and nurses. Motovato is also a graded stakes winner as the champion of the Kenny Noe Jr. Handicap (G3) at Calder Race Course at age four. That year Motovato was also second in both the Grade 3 Spend a Buck Handicap and Memorial Day Handicap (G3), both races also run at Calder. At age five, Motovato continued to compete at the highest levels as the winner of the Sumter Stakes and placed in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Handicap and third in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship. Motovato was able to show his soundness as a racehorse as he went on to race at age six, the year he won the Memorial Day Handicap at Calder. Motovato will stand for a fee of $2,500 when the foal stands and nurses. "Motovato hails from a hickory-tough racing family on the top and bottom of his pedigree,” Isaacs said. “As a 3-year-old, he ran a 11⁄2 Ragozin number and a 111 Beyer. Any horse that puts up those kinds of numbers has showed that he can clearly run. "If it's your goal to breed a runner then you have to consider both of these stallions."

aised on a Nebraska farm with chores to be done at the crack of dawn, John Nerud has always known the meaning of hard work. Which no doubt explains, in part, why he has a plaque in the trainer’s wing of the Racing Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York. Feisty and opinionated as ever at age 99, the indefatigable Nerud (who will turn 100 on February 9) has always known his way around a good horse. As proof, consider his two most famous trainees, Dr. Fager and Gallant Man, and the hickory tough racemare Ta Wee (whom he bred), are also enshrined on Union Avenue. Nerud took out his trainer’s license in 1931 but it wasn’t until he returned from World War II and hooked up with Woolford Farm, which brought him into the orbit of its head trainer, the legendary “Plain Ben” Jones, trainer of six Kentucky Derby winners, that he learned his craft in earnest. “Ben Jones was the first man I ever idolized,” Nerud said. “He told me, ‘Don’t get a horse fit and run them. Get them half-fit and then run them. So that’s what I’d do. I’d work a horse in :52 and put them in.” Nerud subscribed to the theory that if a horse has been running and training, putting them in a race might land a share of the purse, a guaranteed way to keep the owner happy, too. He feels today’s conditioners “Do too much training. A horse can get just as sore training as racing.” He also thinks racing has a scarcity of “horsemen” in the purest sense of the word. Nerud’s business acumen and horsemanship hit the jackpot when he developed Tartan Farm near Ocala, Florida, from scratch into a premier outfit beginning in the 1960s for William L. McKnight, the founder of 3M Corporation. Since then to the present day, the more than 1,000 acres in Marion County has continued to be “historic ground” in the annals of Florida racing and breeding. When Tartan Farm exited racing, the property was purchased and renamed Mockingbird Farm by the illustrious (late) owner-breeder Harry T. Mangurian, who

bred scores of first-class Florida-breds. Now known as Winding Oaks, its master is the prominent ownerbreeder Eugene Melnyk, who also races at the top level. “We were born maybe 100 miles apart, me in Nebraska and Mr. McKnight in South Dakota, so we spoke the same language,” Nerud said. Having the owner’s complete faith in all breeding and racing decisions, the result was scores of first-class runners that Nerud bred and raced, one of which was the superbly talented Cozzene, 1985 champion turf male who won that year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile on the lawn at Aqueduct Race Track in New York. Nerud was a confirmed believer in breeding speed. “I wanted the old Domino line with speed on the top of the pedigree and stamina on the female side,” he said. Among Nerud’s favorite broodmare sires were Man o’War, *Princequillo and Prince John, maternal grandsire of Cozzene. Nerud’s most famous contribution to both Tartan Farm and U.S. racing history was the immortal Dr. Fager, a 1964 foal sired by Rough’n Tumble out of Aspidistra, by Better Self. Winner of 18 of 22 races and $1,002,642. For current generations who want to see Dr. Fager at the peak of his powers, the day he set a world record of 1:321⁄5 on dirt carrying 134 pounds in the 1968 Washington Park Handicap is a good place to start via YouTube. Named 1968 Horse of the Year plus champion sprinter, handicap male horse and turf horse, “Dr. Fager’s four championships in one year is a record that no one will ever break in my lifetime or yours,” Nerud said emphatically. “He was an unusual horse – one of a kind.” Dr. Fager also helped provide Nerud with a barometer of where he was in his training. “After he cooled out I would walk him and let him graze,” Nerud said. “If a truck backfired and he jumped then I knew I had gone too far. If it backfired and he just pricked his ears, then I knew I was right on schedule.” Dr. Fager was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1971. Back in those days, if a trainer won a stakes race at either Saratoga or Hialeah Park, “they were good until the next year,” Nerud recalls. While he admits no trainer can tell how good any horse will be until they run in a race, he chuckled upon recalling Dr. Fager prior to his first start. “[Trainer] Willard Proctor came from California to Hialeah to see him. I pulled him out of his stall but I don’t

think Dr. Fager impressed him. Well, after he won Willard went back to California and said, ‘Nerud told me that was a good horse before he ever run him.’ ” Not to be overlooked is Dr. Fager’s half-sister Ta Wee (by Intentionally), which in Sioux means “beautiful girl.” Twice named champion sprinter to thus emulate her half-brother, “Ta Wee was a very, very talented filly who knew just where the wire was. She would win by a head or a neck,” Nerud said of the Tartan colorbearer. “Then three jumps past the finish line she’d be seventh.” Ta Wee’s 15 career wins included defeating males carrying 140 and 142 pounds, an inconceivable achievement today. She was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1994.

“Dr. Fager’s four championships in one year is a record that no one will ever

More than a quarter-century before Nerud collaborated with John Gaines and others as founding members of the Breeders’ Cup, which debuted in 1984 to rave reviews, he took down the 1957 Belmont Stakes with Gallant Man for Texan Ralph Lowe. Proof that big things come in small packages, Gallant Man added the Travers Stakes and Jockey Club Gold Cup to his post-Belmont haul in addition to a couple of other stakes. Never the soundest of runners, “In my opinion, Gallant Man was the best horse that raced who never won a championship,” Nerud said. “Look what he did after the Belmont, and he never got any credit for it. He was a darn good little horse and he sure would try for you.” Though he almost never goes to the track in the afternoons anymore as a concession to limited mobility, Nerud does enjoy going in the mornings to “see what I

want to see and then go home.” After all, watching the races on his 52-inch flatscreen does have its pluses. Still optimistic and enthusiastic, Nerud’s passion for gin rummy paid off in spades last year. Tipped to a goodlooking yearling colt by the late sire Bernstein at the 2011 Keeneland September sale, Nerud asked his friend Frank O’Connor to fax him the horse’s pedigree. Upon realizing his graded stakes-winning dam, Pocus Hocus, was by Quiet American, who is in-bred to Dr. Fager, Nerud gave the go-ahead. Fate then took a hand when two of Nerud’s gin partners told him they wanted in, too. When the hammer fell at $40,000, That’s Gin became the latest horse to have Nerud’s name on the ownership papers. Currently in training with Mike Hushion in New York, although That’s Gin has thus far failed to break his maiden, he just missed by a half-length as the favorite at

And with the wet going seven of the 12 Daytona entrants scratched including morning line favorite and obvious speedster Great Mills. That left little doubt that Florida-bred Comma to the Top would get the early lead in the 6-1/2 furlong sprint. But the way in which the 4-year-old gelding made and maintained the lead was a bit of surprise. he year 1965 was truly a significant one for the Florida Thoroughbred industry. Roman Brother became the first Florida-bred to be named North American Horse of the Year and Hail to All became the second Florida-bred to win the Belmont Stakes. Roman Brother had an October to remember with victories in three major stakes races that earned him the Horse of the Year title. On October 2, the little 15-hand, 900-pound gelding romped to a 10-length tally in the Woodward Stakes at Aqueduct. Racing against the wind in the backstretch, the Harbor View Farm colorbearer covered the mile and a quarter in 2:014⁄5. Ten days later, Roman Brother scored an eight-length triumph in the Manhattan Handicap. He then closed out the month with a dominating five-length victory in the two-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup. Bred and sold by Ocala Stud Farms, Roman Brother (Third Brother—Roman Zephyr, by Roman) closed out the Roman Brother (right) and Hail to season with five wins, two seconds and two thirds in 14 All (below) starts. On the year, he earned $257,520 and was also named champion handicap male at season’s end. He became the first Horse of the Year to have been sold at public auction. With a career bankroll of $935,203, he also became the leading money earner at that time to have gone through a sales ring. After finishing fifth in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Preakness Stakes, Hail to All captured the 97th Belmont Stakes. Bred and owned by Mrs. Ben Cohen, Hail to All closed strongly to prevail by a neck over Tom Rolfe in the Belmont Stakes. Just the week before, the Hail to Reason – Ellen’s Best, by War Relic, colt had won the Jersey Derby.

Following his win in the Belmont Stakes, Hail to All would go on to win the Travers Stakes and posts thirds in the Saranac Handicap and Dwyer Handicap. He finished the year with a chart of five wins, five seconds and four thirds in 15 starts to earn $418,983. But he would lose out to Tom Rolfe in the voting for champion 3-year-old colt. Florida-bred Sadair, who had been the leading juvenile earner in the country the previous year, never started in 1965. He fractured a coffin bone while in training at Gulfstream Park early in the year and was retired to stud at Meadowbrook Farm in Ocala. Among the other outstanding Florida-bred stakes winners on the year was Flag Raiser. The 3year-old colt by Rough‘n Tumble out of Larks War, by War Relic, won six stakes and earned $244,212. Included in his six stakes victories were consecutive wins in the Bay Shore Stakes, Gotham Stakes, Wood Memorial Stakes and Withers Stakes. Also making headlines were Florida-bred stakes winners Ampose, Flame Tree and Native Street. Ampose (Ambehaving – Oppose, by Bimelech) won the Appleton Handicap, Gulfstream Handicap and Illinois Handicap to earn $149,630. Flame Tree (Count Flame – Linden Lane, by Roman) banked $119,543 with wins in the Dover Stakes and Sanford Stakes. Native Street (Native Dancer – Beaver Street, by My Babu) won the Sorority Stakes and Astoria Stakes on her way to earning $105,418. Rough’n Tumble was Florida’s leading sire and ninth on the national general sire list with progeny earnings of $604,235. Ocala Stud Farms was the eighth-leading breeder in the country with its runners banking $782,479. The statue of Citation was unveiled in the Hialeah Park paddock area as part of the track’s 40th anniversary celebration. A group of prominent Tampa businessmen, headed by cigar manufacturer Morton L. Annis, acquired 83 percent of the Sunshine Park stock for $2 million. The new management’s first steps were to change the name to Florida Downs and Turf Club and begin a $300,000 renovation program for the track. ■ FILE PHOTOS

After the race, trainer Michael Stidham was quick to recognize when opportunity had struck. “When the 49 and change went up [after the first halfmile], that was nice to see,” Stidham said. “I think today showed if [Hurricane Ike] gets things a bit his way, he can carry a distance. Everyone was saying ‘oh, he can’t go over a mile.’ I think he can carry it as far as he wants to go.” Graham however, was not so quick to agree about the ease of the trip. “He got out on the lead and he threw his ears up, “ Graham said of Hurricane Ike. “They were going slow, but I always had pressure. [Brethren] was always there. [Hurricane Ike] jumped the shadows a little bit down the backside and I had to help him back. He finished up really good. n a racing career that has spanned three years and 26 races, Florida-bred Hurricane Ike has run further than a mile just three times – none with much success. He finished 11th of 14 in the 2009 Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Keeneland at age two; third in the Grade 2 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs at age three and ninth in the $105,000 Golden Bear Stakes at Indian Downs at age four. On Dec. 15 at Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, it was time for Hurricane Ike to give it a go at age five. It may have been a case of luck being defined by the combination of preparation and opportunity for Hurricane Ike, but he finally got the job done going further than eight furlongs in the $75,000 Tenacious Handicap at 1 1/16 miles. Hurricane Ike has been known to produce his best results when he can get the early lead at one mile, so jockey James Graham used that same strategy with him in the Tenacious. That’s where the preparation occurred. Opportunity presented itself when Hurricane Ike and Graham were able to lead the field of nine through a lethargic first quarter mile in :24.76 despite pressure from 3-1 favorite Brethren. Opportunity rang out again

■ Selection Criteria for Florida-bred champions Year-end divisional champions will be determined using the “FTBOA Chase to the Championship” point system, a ranking that awards points for success in stakes races. The “FTBOA Chase to the Championship” allocates points for stakes wins in graded races, open-company stakes and Florida’s signature racing days, with the number of points awarded based upon the classification of the race. International stakes race status is governed by the International Cataloguing Standards Committee. The first three finishers in all Group/Graded and listed races appearing in Part I of the International Cataloguing Standards and International Statistics Book printed by The Jockey Club receive “black-type” designation. Ten point bonus to be awarded to any 2-year-old colt or filly sweeping all three legs of the Florida Stallion Stakes in determining the Champion 2-year-old Florida-bred. The Florida-bred with the most points in each division on December 31 is deemed champion of that division. Horse of the Year, Broodmare of the Year and Breeder of the Year will be voted on by the FTBOA Board of Directors and announced at the FTBOA’s annual awards dinner. In the case of a year-end tie in points in any division, earnings will be used to decide the tiebreaker. — Points are assigned as follows: 40 THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2013

n the drama that is Thoroughbred racing, the 2012 Florida-bred champions were true scene stealers. At racetracks from coast to coast, they flashed their talent, drew rave reviews and found the spotlight in the winner's circle. As a group, the eight 2012 Florida-bred champions tallied 15 stakes; of that number, nine were graded stakes and of those, six were Grade 1 victories. Florida-bred Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) champion Little Mike garnered the dual titles of older male and turf male. Musical Romance, the 2011 Florida-bred Horse of the Year, picked up another pair of championship honors as older female and female sprinter. Merit Man, who was based at Santa Anita Park, was named the champion 2-year-old colt. Verso a Verso, who did all her running at Calder Race Course, collected the champion 2-year-old filly title. Fort Loudon, who was the 2011 Florida-bred champion 2-year-old colt, posted an outstanding sophomore season to nab the champion 3-year-old colt honor. Eden's Moon, a multiple graded stakes winner on the West Coast, earned the champion 3year-old filly crown. Grade 1 stakes winner Coil captured the male sprinter title while Bay to Bay repeated as the female turf champion.

MERIT MAN 2012 FLORIDA-BRED CHAMPION 2-YEAR-OLD COLT Merit Man posted a racing season of distinction to claim the 2012 Florida-bred champion 2year-old colt title. Bred by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds and Stephen Barberino, Merit Man didn't kick off his juvenile season until the fall, but made every start count on his way to earning a championship crown. Trained by Robert Hess Jr., Merit Man broke his maiden at first asking on September 2 at Del Mar. In the maiden special weight event, Merit Man scored a win by three-quarters of a length over Sacred Ovation. Quietasacat was third. Winning time for the five and a half furlongs was 1:03.67. That outstanding performance earned Merit

Man a stakes start in his next outing. In the Tim Conway Stakes on Oct. 6 at Santa Anita Park, Merit Man continued to prove his mettle. Despite being three-wide coming into the home stretch, Merit Man took the lead after a halfmile in :45.22. From there it was all Merit Man as he romped home a winner by five and half lengths. South Floyd was second with No Rachmones third. Merit Man covered the six furlongs in 1:10.56. The stakes got even higher for Merit Man in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint on Nov. 3 at Santa Anita Park. Turning in a gritty performance, Merit Man was beaten by just a nose by Hightail. ments garnered him the 2012 Florida-bred champion 3-year-old colt title. Fort Loudon got the season off to a winning start with consecutive stakes wins at his Calder Race Course homebase. First up was the In Summation Stakes on May 12 where he posted a two- lengths tally over Hello Prince with Angelofdistinction third. Winning time for the six furlongs was 1:10.51. Next up was the Unbridled Stakes on June 9 and another trip to the winner's circle. Fort Loudon was much the best by three and three-quarters of a length over Bahamian Squall; Angelofdistinction was again third. Moving into graded-stakes company, Fort Loudon took on highly-regarded sprinter Trinniberg in the Carry Back Stakes (G3) on July 7. Trained by Stanley Gold, Fort Loudon raced nearly in tandem with pacesetter Trinniberg be-

fore taking the lead at the sixteenth pole. Fort Loudon prevailed by a neck over Trinniberg in 1:10.57 for the six furlongs. Angelofdistinction was third, nearly 14 lengths back of the onetwo finishers. Trinniberg would go on to win the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) on Nov. 3 at Santa Anita Park. In another interesting twist, Awesome of Course, the sire of Fort Loudon, and Teuflesberg, the sire of Trinniberg, both stood at Brent and Crystal Fernung's Journeyman Stud at the time of the Carry Back Stakes win. Teuflesberg was sold to McMahon Thoroughbreds in Saratoga just prior to the Breeders' Cup. Taking his show on the road, Fort Loudon finished second to Willy Beamin in the King's Bishop Stakes (G1) on Aug. 23 at Saratoga. He followed that with a second to Neck 'n Neck in the Ack Ack Handicap (G3) on November 2 at Churchill Downs. Back in South Florida, Fort Loudon was second to Bahamian Squall in the Sunshine State Stakes on Dec. 2. By Awesome of Course out of the gradedstakes winning millionaire Talc mare Lottsa Talc, Fort Loudon banked $384,638 on three wins and three seconds in 11 starts. To date, he has career earnings of $718,123.

EDEN'S MOON 2012 FLORIDA-BRED CHAMPION 3-YEAR-OLD FILLY No doubt the connections of Eden's Moon are over the moon with her success. The bay Malibu Moon filly, bred by Bridlewood Farm and raced by Kaleem Shah, gave notice of her talent with a pair of graded-stakes wins, including a Grade 1 tally, in 2012. She rounded out her racing resume with three graded-stakes placings as well. Eden's Moon broke her maiden in eyebrowraising fashion on Jan. 8 at Santa Anita Park. In the maiden special weight, the Bob Baffert trainee romped to victory by 11 and a half lengths. Second was Music Thunder with Conjure the Spirit third. Winning time for the mile was 1:36.27. Moving right into the top echelon of racing in the Las Virgenes Stakes (G1) on Mar. 3 at Santa Anita Park, Eden's Moon didn't disappoint. She roared to a win by three and a quarters lengths over Reneesgotzip with Open Water taking third. Eden's Moon posted a winning time of 1:35.27 for the mile. Proving she wasn't a one-trick pony, Eden's

Moon next tried the turf in the San Clemente Handicap (G2) on July 22 at Del Mar. The change in surface didn't change the outcome. Eden's Moon posted a one and one-quarter victory over Open Water with Indigo River third. This time she stopped the clock at 1:34.38 for the mile. On the season, Eden's Moon was also second to Potesta in the Hollywood Oaks (G2). In addition, she notched thirds in the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) and Indiana Oaks. Eden's Moon earned $378,216 on three wins, one second and two thirds in eight starts. Out of the Giant's Causeway mare Eden's Causeway, who is no longer owned by Bridlewood Farm. LITTLE MIKE 2012 FLORIDA-BRED CHAMPION OLDER MALE 2012 FLORIDA-BRED CHAMPION MALE TURF Little Mike, produced from a gift-horse mare, went on to do big things on the racetrack in 2012. Very big things. The 5-year-old Spanish Steps gelding got the racing world's attention with a trio of major Grade1 turf wins at three different tracks. He concluded his stellar season with the exclamation point of capturing the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1). A multiple graded stakes winner in 2011, Little Mike had already proven his quality. He opened the 2012 season with a handy three-quarters length win in the Florida Sunshine Millions Turf on January 28 at Gulfstream Park. Second was Slews Answer with Bad Debt third. Winning time for the nine furlongs was 1:45.94. It was time for a mystical, magical road trip. First stop was Churchill Downs for the Turf Classic Stakes (G1) on May 5. Saddled by Dale Romans, Little Mike sprung a surprise and cruised to a two-and-a-half length victory over Slim Shady (GB). Fellow Florida-bred Brilliant Speed was third. Packing his tack, Little Mike's next stop was the Arlington Million Stakes (G1) on Aug. 18. There he proved his mettle with a win by a length and a half over Afsare (GB). Colombian (Ire) and Rahystrada deadheated for third. Little Mike covered the 10 furlongs in 2:02.44. Next on Little Mike's travel itinerary was the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) on Nov. 3 at Santa Anita Park. Surprisingly overlooked at 17-1, Little Mike finally made everyone believers with a rousing half-length victory over highly-favored Point of Entry. Taking third was St. Nicholas Abbey (Ire). Winning time for the mile and a half was 2:22.83. The BC Turf win brought Little Mike's seasonal earnings to $2,668,742 and his career bankroll to $3,074,412. Little Mike, who is out of the winning Wavering Monarch mare Hay Jude, was bred by Carlo E. Vaccarezza and is raced by his wife Priscilla. Hay Jude, who earned $113,152, was given to Vaccarezza and she is the only broodmare the family owns. Hay Jude is also the dam of multiple graded stakes winner Little Nick. Little Mike and Little Nick are named after the Vaccarezzas' sons. The Vaccarezzas, who used to own Break of Dawn Farm in

Ocala, now live in Parkland, Florida. Little Mike was broken and trained at Jimmy Crupi's New Castle Farm in Ocala.

MUSICAL ROMANCE 2012 FLORIDA-BRED OLDER FEMALE 2012 FLORIDA-BRED FEMALE SPRINTER An Eclipse Award-winning season is a tough act to follow. Musical Romance collected the 2011 Eclipse Award as champion female sprinter, as well as being named the Florida-Bred Horse of the Year on the season. In 2012, the Ocala Stud-bred and sold daughter of deceased Concorde's Tune showed her champion's heart. Musical Romance made a quick return to the winner's circle in the new season in the Inside Information Stakes (G2) on March 17 at Gulfstream Park. Raced by Pinnacle Racing Stables and trainer Bill Kaplan, the 5year-old mare scored by three-quarters of a length over Hot Summer. Groupie Doll was third. Winning time for the seven furlongs was a quick 1:21.88. Back at her Calder Race Course homebase, Musical Romance tallied the second Grade I triumph of her outstanding career. On July 7, she won by a half-length over Nicole H. in the

Princess Rooney Handicap (G1). Nakano posted third. Musical Romance stopped the clock in 1:10.92 for the six furlongs. Kaplan saddled Musical Romance for the last time at Calder in the Mike Sherman Memorial Stakes on Oct. 6. She rewarded her fans with a win by three-quarters length over Golden Mystery with Nakano third. Winning time for the six and a half furlongs was 1:117.13. Also on the season, Musical Romance was second in the Distaff Stakes (G1) and third in the Gallant Bloom Handicap (G2). She closed out her career with a sixth-place finish to Groupie Doll in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) on November 3 at Santa Anita Park. On the season, she earned $464,035 and retired with career earnings of $1,681,885. At the 2012 Fasig-Tipton November sale, Musical Romance was sold for $1.6 million to Japan-based Northern Farm. Ocala Stud bred and sold Musical Romance for $22,000 at the 2009 Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's April juvenile sale. Kaplan signed the ticket for Pinnacle Racing. Ocala Stud also bred and still owns the Slew Gin Fizz mare Candlelightdinner, the dam of Musical Romance. She produced a 2012 Circular Quay filly and is in foal for 2013 to Uncle Mo.

COIL 2012 FLORIDA-BRED CHAMPION MALE SPRINTER For the aptly named Coil, he should always be counted on to strike. Bred by Leonard Lavin's Glen Hill Farm, Coil made headlines in 2011 when he captured the Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1). In doing so, he defeated Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Shackleford and Belmont Stakes (G1) victor Ruler On Ice. Lying in wait, Coil struck again and posted the second Grade I win of his career with a tally in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (G1). That victory and a pair of graded stakes placings would earn him the 2012 Florida-bred champion male sprinter title. Coil opened the season at Del Mar, notching a win in an allowance/optional claimer in July. He then came back to post a second to Capital Account, beaten half a length, in the Pat O'Brien Stakes (G2). The Bob Baffert trainee would not start again until the fall, but the wait was worthwhile. In the Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (G1) on October 6, Coil prevailed by a head over Capital Account. Finishing third was Jimmy Creed. Winning time for the six furlongs was 1:09.88. The victory also made Coil a millionaire; he joined One Dreamer as the second Glen Hill Farm-bred to attain that elite status. Florida-bred One Dreamer won the 1994 Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1).

Traveling to the East Coast, Coil notched a third to Stay Thirsty in the Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) on Nov. 24 at Aqueduct. Finishing second was Groupie Doll, who captured the 2012 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1). Glen Hill Farm initially raced Coil before selling him privately to the trio of Karl Watson, Mike Pegram and Paul Weitman. On the season, Coil banked $281,800 on two wins, one second and one third in five starts. By Point Given out of Eversmile, by Theatrical (Ire), Coil has career earnings to date of $1,064,360. Glen Hill Farm purchased Eversmile, the dam of Coil, for $275,000 at the 2002 Keeneland September yearling sale from Ashleigh Stud, agent. Eversmile is a half sister to Possibly Perfect, the 1995 champion grass mare. Eversmile had a 2012 colt by Kitten's Joy.

BAY TO BAY 2012 FLORIDA-BRED CHAMPION TURF FEMALE From year to year, Bay to Bay has been a consistently successful racehorse. In 2011 she captured the Nassau Stakes (G2) at Woodbine and was graded stakes-placed twice to be named the Florida-bred champion turf female. By the end of 2012, Bay to Bay was without a stakes win but posted two graded-stakes placings. That was enough for the 5-year-old Sligo Bay (Ire) mare to claim

the 2012 Florida-bred champion turf female title. Bay to Bay, who was bred by Frank Stronach's Adena Springs, opened her season at Gulfstream Park. On March 18, she finished second to Tapitsfly in the Honey Fox Stakes (G2). Coming in third was La Reine Lionne. Trainer Brian Lynch then took his charge to Keeneland for the Jenny Wiley Stakes (G1) on April 14. Bay to Bay posted another runner-up finish, this time to Daisy Devine with Tapitsfly third. On but two seasonal starts, Robert Smithen's colorbearer banked $90,000. Bay to Bay was retired with career earnings of $744,728 on four wins, seven seconds and two thirds in 17 starts. Adena Springs consigned Bay to Bay to the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale. With Hidden Brook acting as his agent, Smithen paid $35,000 for the yearling filly out of the graded stakes-placed With Approval mare Bala. Adena Springs bought Bala for $60,000 at the 2004 Keeneland January mixed sale. Three years later, Adena Springs sold Bala in foal to El Prado (Ire) for $150,000 to Bluestone Equine Management at the 2007 Keeneland November mixed sale. Bala was sold again, this time in foal to Harlan's Holiday, for $65,000 to Black Rock Stables at the 2011 Keeneland November mixed sale. Bay to Bay, consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, sold for $425,000 at the 2012 Keeneland November mixed sale. She was bought by Shadai Farm. ■

Sunshine Millions Day will be conducted this year on Jan. 19 and will feature six races worth $1.3 million including the $400,000 Sunshine Millions Classic. The Classic was won last year by Mucho Macho Man, who would go on to have a banner year in 2012 culminating with his runner-up performance to Fort Larned in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Santa Anita Nov. 3. But last year’s Sunshine Million Turf winner Little Mike, would one-up his fellow Floridian as he capped off his 2012 campaign by winning the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1).

Rewarding Excellence The Stakes Program at Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs Keeps Improving Other prominent winners during the Sunshine Millions were Awesome Feather, who kept her career record unblemished to that point by romping home in the Distaff and It’s Me Mom upsetting Florida-bred Horse of the Year and North American champion Musical Romance in the Filly and Mare Sprint. 2013 Florida Sunshine Millions with $1.3 million in purses include:

FLORIDA HORSE PARK

Goals and Missions I

f you are like most people, you’ve probably experienced the sudden burst of motivation that comes in early January, as holiday indulgences make their way to the waistline and New Year’s resolutions force a new look at what we see. At the Florida Horse Park, it’s not resolutions, but our goals and mission that we are focusing on as this New Year begins. I recently read an interesting article that had some insights into achieving our goals (aka resolutions). The trick to achieving your goals and supporting your mission is to put these simple steps to practice: First, you must choose the right mission, for the right reasons. At the Florida Horse Park, we sincerely believe we have done just The flip-side of setting ambitious that. Our mission is to atgoals is that you have to remember to ac- tract, sustain and grow knowledge partial success, because any our viable equine and success is cause for celebration. We are we are better off than before we began. committed to helping the businesses and families of Central Florida, Marion County and Ocala; many of whom own and work at the horse farms, feed and tack stores, equipment sales and rentals, veterinary services, restaurants and hotels. Second, you must create a plan. The Foundation at the Florida Horse Park wanted to harness New Year’s motivation into something that will carry us through this next year and set the stage for continued success in subsequent years; we have planned for both smaller and larger events in 2013. Our first fundraising event will be a fun-filled evening of Whinny, Wine and Nibbles, a blind wine tasting and food pairing, held at the Artisinal Dish in Ocala, on January 31. The cost is $75.00 per person; for reservations, call us at (352) 307-6699, ext. 8. We are also launching a $2 million capital campaign this year to fund a covered arena, a Triage Center, vendor space and possibly a

museum. With a good plan in hand, making significant progress toward our goal will be much easier. Third, stay on track and don’t be afraid to ask for help! The Florida Horse Park is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, funded entirely by private donations and corporate sponsorships. Contributions and significant capital investment have enabled us to provide our visitors with fun-filled experiences and will continue to be critical not only for future growth, but for maintaining and sustaining the existing park facilities, including the sound systems, equine barns, RV sites, dressage letters, and even general operating costs. Fourth, remain flexible, adjust to fit the situation, and keep on going. A realization among goal-setting experts is the need to continually modify the approach—sometimes even changing goals to better meet ever changing circumstances and the needs of the organization and the community. To survive, the Florida Horse Park has tried to be flexible as we continually strive to meet and exceed the expectations of our supporters and donors, both locally and at the State level. Lastly, the flip-side of setting ambitious goals is that you have to remember to acknowledge partial success, because any success is cause for celebration. Our successes, whether big or small, mean that we are one step closer to meeting our goals; that we have made progress; and we are better off than before we began. We thank you for your support and wish you success in accomplishing your New Year’s resolutions! And as the Florida Horse Park embarks on an exciting New Year, we ask for your continued support as we strive to fulfill our mission and achieve our goals. Without you, we couldn’t do a thing! Equine Care By HEATHER SMITH THOMAS omplications sometimes occur at foaling, and these can be minor or very serious. Dr. Ahmed Tibary (Professor of Theriogenology, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Washington State University) says that many people do not have a plan for what to do after a mare foals. “I see this most often with small breeders. Professional large breeders usually have a standard protocol for post-partum examination of the mare by their veterinarian,” says Tibary. “This examination is important not only for the mare, but for the foal as well. This health check should occur within the first 24 hours. The most important thing I emphasize to small breeders is that even if the foaling occurred quickly and with no observed complication, this does not mean there are no problems in the mare. You cannot see cervical or vaginal injuries, and these may occur even without a dystocia,” he explains. “No post-partum examina-

tion is complete without saving and examining the placenta. Horse owners can learn how to look at the placenta and consult the veterinarian if they see something abnormal, but in most cases the owner should save it for the veterinarian to examine. Just assuming it is complete, and throwing it away is not a good idea, because the placenta is where a lot of answers can be found,” says Tibary. “There are two types of mares that we examine. There’s the mare whose pregnancy has been completely normal, with no health problems, and she would undergo a routine postpartum examination. Then there are mares that we know had complications during pregnancy, and we need to stay on top of that, with a thorough post-partum exam—not only for her, but also for the health and safety of the foal. The reason for the post-partum exam is to avoid or head off any problems that we could tackle immediately. It is also the first step in making a decision on whether we can breed that mare on foal heat or not,” he explains. “When it comes to planning, there are two situations we need to look at. The first is when parturition or the immediate post-partum period requires emergency assistance, within the first 12 hours. It could be as immediate as during the

EquineCare_PostPartum_WithOCD_Florida Horse_template 1/18/13 11:33 AM Page 75

foaling itself. If we know there is something wrong, we need to make sure the mare is seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible,” he says. “Any mare that shows anything abnormal in the first few hours becomes an emergency. This would include anything from profuse bleeding to colic, to abnormal appearance of vulva and/or rectum, a mare that is shivering or shocky, rejecting the foal, a foal born dead, or any other abnormalities. All of these factors can signal a serious problem,” he says. RETAINED PLACENTA

A situation that requires attention is a mare that delivers her foal normally, but does not shed the placenta on time. “Usually we define retained placenta as one that hasn’t been delivered completely by 3 hours post foaling. If it is still hanging there, or we know there is a possibility of part of it being still within the mare, this problem must be tackled,” says Tibary. There are many owners who say they’ve had a mare that retained the placenta but it had no adverse affects on the mare, but this is not a reason to do nothing. “I wouldn’t take a chance. The overwhelming majority of mares that retain the placenta have severe complications, including endotoxemia and laminitis,” he says. “One caution with retained placenta is the over-use of oxytocin in these mares. A lot of people use oxytocin on every case of retained placenta, without knowing why the placenta was retained, or use large doses. Ideally a plan for treatment should be devised after examination of the mare, to determine why the placenta was retained. There are some breeds, for instance, that are predisposed to placental retention. These include draft horses, and miniature horses,” explains Tibary. “In these breeds part of the problem may be hypocalcemia (shortage of calcium). Without treating this situation, you are not addressing the real problem.” It is important to examine the placenta, to

determine whether the mare has a small piece still within the uterus. “This can cause a problem just as severe as if the whole placenta was retained. It is easy to see the problem when the placenta is hanging there, but more difficult to make that judgment when the placenta has already been passed—particularly if foaling was unobserved out in the field and the placenta is missing or has been torn apart,” he says. Another problem with field foaling is that the owner may have no idea when the mare actually foaled. “If the placenta is still hanging there, we don’t know whether we are talking about 2 hours or 3 hours. If the placenta is retained for more than 6 hours, the management of the case must be much more intensive than when it is still fresh,” he says. Length of time elapsed since foaling is crucial to know whether we have a problem with the placenta, or with the foal, or the mare. “If the

Generally, if she seems to be very healthy, with no history of problems, I limit my examination to checking the placenta (which I hope the owner saved for me and kept refrigerated) and examining the mare’s vagina and cervix,” he says. Cervical tears might not be accompanied by severe signs and the owner might not be aware there’s a problem. “These strategies might address any major emergencies in the mare or foal before they get out of hand. Another aspect of this post-partum strategy is to discuss with the owners any true emergencies that might occur in the first 24 hours, so they could be on the lookout for signs that should be considered emergencies that require treatment, or even hospitalization,” says Tibary. Emergencies would include severe accidents such as a prolapsed uterus, prolapsed rectum (both of which are rare), prolapsed or inverted bladder, severe rectal-vaginal tears (as

foal is not able to rise and nurse within a certain length of time, it also needs attention. Also, we may have a mare that foaled normally but now is displaying systemic signs of trouble.” POST-PARTUM EXAMINATION

“The second group of mares we need to worry about would include all mares that appeared to have a normal foaling, and a normal foal. These mares and their foals need to be examined within 18 hours, or sometimes as late as 24 hours, for a general post-partum and foal check,” says Tibary. This first check would include general evaluation of the foal and an IgG to determine passive transfer from colostrum. “What I emphasize most in that examination is looking at the mare’s external appearance, trying to determine if she is doing well, such as defecating and urinating normally.

when the foal’s foot pushes through the vagina into the rectum), severe bruising or laceration of the vagina, etc. “These can be complicated if the mare becomes infected, or can become aggravated by severe inflammation. For example, simple vaginal bruising that is painful may prevent the mare from urinating or defecating--because it hurts,” he explains. The mare becomes impacted, and this secondary problem may be worse than the primary problem. “Some of the preventative treatments for mares before foaling would include laxative feeds like bran mash, so that the bowel movements will be softer and more readily passed without causing pain.” Some broodmare farms and practitioners like to administer mineral oil to all post-partum mares, and particularly those that have had some trouble during foaling. One of the biggest emergencies in the THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2013 75

EquineCare_PostPartum_WithOCD_Florida Horse_template 1/18/13 11:33 AM Page 76

mare after foaling is bleeding. “This may take hours, or a few days, depending on the extent of the hemorrhage,” says Tibary. Just because a mare seemed fine after foaling doesn’t necessarily mean she’s out of danger. “This is why it is important to do the post-partum examination during the first 24 hours. Even if everything seems to be normal, the examination can help classify the mares as normal, or needing more follow-up examination.” It can alert the owner and veterinarian to something that could be a problem. “When I talk to breeders, I tell them that whenever they commit to breeding a mare, they are committed from day one to ensuring she has a healthy pregnancy, and hopefully leading to a healthy foaling and a healthy foal. The way to do that is to set a standard protocol regarding what needs to be done at each stage of pregnancy, foaling, and the immediate post-partum period,” he says. “Post-partum protocol involves two things. Going into foaling, we need to have an idea of what would constitute an emergency during foaling, because most of the post-partum problems will be linked to that. If breeders have a very good protocol about problems with foaling, they would also have a good protocol on post-partum care. When they get to the post-partum examination, they should realize that if everything has gone according to schedule this doesn’t mean there will be no problems at all. They still have to do the post-partum check between 12 and 18 hours (24 hours at the latest). They should also try to identify emergencies as quickly as possible,” he says.

Equine Care

76 THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2013

Rejection or Inability of the Mare to Mother the Foal

“Often the cause of foal rejection—not allowing the foal to nurse—may be due to pain in the udder. The mare may have mastitis or severe edema. This can jeopardize the life of the foal if he can’t obtain colostrum. The horse owner should always have a plan, in case of this emergency—to be able to supply substitute colostrum to feed the foal, or to make up for lack of quality of the mare’s colostrum. Breeders should be also be aware of the need to examine colostrum quality,” says Tibary. The welfare of the foal is always part of the equation when a mare has a problem. “Anything that affects the mare can have an adverse affect on the foal, and vice-versa. One example, that many breeders and veterinarians forget, is that whenever a foal is hospitalized for some reason, this will affect the mare’s uterine involution.” If the foal can’t nurse for some reason, this can be a problem, since suckling stimulates contractions and shrinking of the uterus. “When we hospitalize the mare and foal, she doesn’t get the exercise which is crucial for post-partum involution of the uterus. Involution is activated by nursing, and by exercise. Normal involution is hindered if the mare is just standing in the stall,” he says. People are often so focused on the medical crisis (of the mare or foal) that they don’t think about the need for exercise for the mare. Tibary points out that post-partum emergencies are responsible for about 40 percent of mares that have problems with timely uterine involution. When talking with his veterinary students, he tells them to never separate three important things when performing post-partum examinations—the mare, the placenta, and the foal. These are all very closely interrelated and they all affect the health of the other. Mare owners need to have a plan for what they might do if they lose a mare and end up with an orphan, or have a foal that must have another source of colostrum or milk. “Things as simple as connecting with other breeders may be helpful, to see if there might be access to substitute colostrum, for instance.” INJURIES/PROBLEMS THAT MAY OCCUR DURING FOALING

Sometimes during a difficult foaling, or manipulation of the foal in order to assist delivery, one of the foal’s feet may scrape or tear the uterus. “The list of injuries that can occur during foaling is long. These need to be classified as to seriousness. We don’t want horse owners to assume that all mares will die if they have a foaling problem. Some of the emergencies are quite rare,” says Tibary. “If I were to rank the various post-partum problems by frequency, I would say that the most common would be retained placenta—either total or partial. This could lead to complications such as toxemia. The second most common problem that is not quite an emergency but needs to be taken care of is rectal-vaginal tearing. These can be different degrees of seriousness. Some are more dangerous than others. After that, in almost equal proportion (and increasing in number when there’s been severe dystocia) are hemorrhaging, uterine prolapse, uterine tears, vaginal/bladder prolapse (the bladder is pushed out during or immediately after foaling),” he says. “In mares, bladder prolapse is relatively common after severe dystocia, compared with other species, because the urethral opening in the mare is so large. Sometimes it is so large that you can put your whole hand into the bladder. The minor problems that may become complicated later are bruising of the cervix, etc.” Mare owners need to realize that some of these problems are not very common, but do happen occasionally. “This is the reason that every mare that foals needs to be looked at afterward, to pick up on those situations. Even if it is not life-endangering, it may still be a problem for the mare’s future fertility,” he says. You may be able to treat or correct something now, and prevent problems later. And some situations may or may not be correctable. You may have to make the hard decision about putting down the mare, and end up with an orphan foal.■

Similar to the larger FDACS manual, many of the same topics are going to be covered in this smaller version. It is user friendly, only about 20 or so pages in length and contains excellent information on topics such as: manure management, composting, pasture management, pesticide use and pharmaceutical use. Additionally, there are good explanatory sections on Florida’s water resources, nutrients, erosion and water quality impacts. Because there is plenty of very useful, good information, its usage can benefit any farm’s daily management practices. Pictures and diagrams will also be found within, meant to help the user “visualize” some of the management practices suggested. As the New Year gets under way, I want to once again spend time talking about the equine Best Management Practices (BMP) Manual, however, this discussion is not going to be about the large manual meant for professional farms, produced by FDACS (Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services). The manual I am discussing will be completed in the near future and will apply to many more farms in Florida-it is the FDEP’s (Florida Department of Environmental Protection) “Small-scale Horse Operations” Manual. Still in draft form, it also contains BMPs for horse farms, but the intent is meant for the bulk of the farms in Florida, which are facilities not meant to be run as a commercial operation. The large majority of farms in the state fall into this category, as many facilities can be considered to be something of a “family farm”. While some commercial operations don’t have large num-

The Importance of Horse Pasture By Y. C. NEWMAN, E. L. JOHNSON, J. VENDRAMINI, C.G. CHAMBLISS, AND I. V. EZENWA

lorida has over 500,000 horses, third only to Texas and California. Marion County, Horse Capital of the World® has more horses than any other county in the U.S. Horse operations vary in terms of the number of horses, from small (1–3 horses) to large commercial operations that breed, train, or stable horses. Large-scale horse operations are presently concentrated in the central (with Marion County as the nucleus) and the southeastern regions (Palm Beach/Broward/MiamiDade counties) of Florida. Florida pastures and forage crops can provide a major part of the nutritional needs of horses almost year-round. Planning for pastures or forage crops to be utilized as horse pasture should consider peculiarities of the equine digestive system. Horses are herbivores that can and should consume forages and are able to utilize the same pastures as cattle. However, the horse is not a ruminant. It has a simpler, less robust digestive system that is more sensitive to what it grazes than is the case with cattle. Horses lack the rumen, the large vat where cattle and other ruminants ferment and degrade poor quality, high fiber, cellulosic materials through the action of microorganisms. Horses instead have an adapted and enlarged colon where the fermentative process occurs. Thus, horses, because of the location of the colon, are hindgut digesters and require higher quality, less fibrous forages. A pasture serves several purposes for the horse; it is both an area for exercise and a source of high quality forage. A high quality pasture and/or hay can provide a balanced ration of energy, protein, minerals, and vitamins that a horse needs. However, even on a good quality pasture or hay, free-choice vitamin/mineral mix and water are needed to adequately meet the horse's daily nutrient requirements. Horses not receiving supplemental feed will consume about 1.5%–2.5% of their body weight as forage per day. Thus, an average horse weighing 1,000 lbs would require a minimum of 15–25 lbs of dry forage or hay per day. Even on finestemmed, leafy, high quality pastures, care should be taken to ensure that the horses consume adequate amounts of fiber, which they require for normal gastrointestinal function. The fiber content of a good horse hay should contain 30%–40% acid detergent

fiber (ADF) and 50%–65% neutral detergent fiber (NDF) in order to provide for normal gastrointestinal function. On lush pasture, supplemental hay may be required to ensure adequate intake of fiber. Pastures for horses can be grown in nearly all locations in Florida. Variations in soil and climatic conditions make some locations and sites better suited to production of particular forage species than others. The role of improved pastures in supplying forage varies from farm to farm, depending on the type of horse, available facilities, quality of these facilities, and personal preference of the operator. It is possible for horses to receive a large portion of their feed from pastures; however, if this is to be achieved, careful consideration must be given to planning and carrying out a forage production and utilization program. The factors that must be considered in improved pasture production are: site characteristics, production goals, forage varieties, liming and fertilization, and grazing management. SITE

Successful establishment and long-term productivity of a horse pasture will depend on the suitability of the site for the forage species chosen and whether the forage meets the production goals and management abilities of the owner. Soil characteristics and the climate of an area must be considered when selecting the forage for a site. Soil drainage is of particular importance because some forages, like perennial peanut and bermudagrass, do not tolerate poorly drained soils, while others, such as bahiagrass, are adapted to a wide range of soil drainage types. Most Florida soils are low in fertility and pH, and those limitations are generally overcome by using fertilizer and lime, if recommended by a soil test. Forages used in Florida vary widely in cold tolerance. Before planting, it is important to determine if the forage can survive typical winters in that part of the state. In addition, choice of forage species for a given site must take into consideration whether the owner is relying on the pasture for nutrition or simply as a clean place to exercise. Higher nutritive value forages usually require more management, while those with the primary purpose of maintaining cover often require less. Positive Developments

T

he first news items to follow the change of calendars were encouraging. The year just passed was certainly not the most memorable in terms of competition and the New Year has yet to gain moby Paul Moran mentum, but the first month of 2013 did not pass without at least a few positive developments. Horse owners, bettors and breeders escaped the fiscal cliff nonsense unscathed, probably a Congressional oversight but there is no room in the nation’s gridlocked capital for the splitting of hairs. Removal of income tax deductions would have laid waste to incentives that keep all three groups in action while in most cases avoiding prosperity. Extensive lobbying efforts on the part of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association succeeded in winning exemptions from newly imposed limits on itemized deductions that will maintain the status quo for all involved. All things considered, a 1.3 percent decline in wagering on 3.1 percent fewer racing days in 2012 is not entirely disappointing when purses were up by 2.3 percent. There is nothing on the horizon that suggests impending prosperity. Cheaters have no place in any part Flat is the new up. This amounts only to a colof racing and perhaps victory in this long, lective sigh of relief and glimstill incomplete battle will encourage regumer of hope, but it’s a start. By lators elsewhere to straighten their spines. any measure 2012 was not a bright spot for the sport’s image. A major, once-respected, large eastern newspaper expended many resourced producing an assault on racing that spanned the calendar and attacked everything from quarter horses in New Mexico, to the connections of an ill-fated Kentucky Derby winner, lamented the fact that French laws now prohibit the Galls from eating American race horses treated during their careers with any form of medication and finally took a stand against the use of medication in show-horse circles. The uninitiated may have believed much of this scurrilous screed and taken a dim view of the entire enterprise. The initiated realized that there is enough wrong to warrant concern. Perception is reality when only one side of a story is being manipulated and exaggerated. While this is an industry in which the overwhelming majority of participants play by the rules, overwhelming majorities are not unanimous and racing does a poor job at telling its own story. Part of racing’s image problem is that it is often nearly 82 THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2013

impossible to punish transgressors within the average human lifespan. Due process and racing co-exist uncomfortably most of the time. A league commissioner has great power in other sports, which enjoy the luxury of separation from government. There is no league at the races, no commissioner and precious little consensus. But in early January racing won one. New York's highest court struck a blow on behalf of those who play by the rules and declined, for the second time, to hear an appeal by trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. in his bid to keep regulators from revoking his license. If memory serves, this penalty was originally imposed shortly after the Nixon Administration and has since rattled around the state’s legal system, through many appeals during which time Dutrow has continued to train horses for loyal clients, conservatively earning hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. Dutrow is infamous and his international record of charges, convictions and rulings is far too extensive to recount on this page. After the decision was handed down, officials said he could be required to surrender his license to train in New York – and everywhere else -- within days since the ruling exhausts Dutrow's legal options at the state court level – at least two regulatory hearings and three levels of civil court. Not so fast. Though many on both sides of the rail hope that Dutrow’s embarrassing presence on the daily racing program in New York will soon be in the past, he almost immediately announced plans to press on to federal court. Dutrow has never hesitated to thumb his nose at regulators or raise a middle finger to the betting public. "Upon service of the order on Mr. Dutrow, the penalties issued against him by the board—a 10-year ban from racing in New York and $50,000 in fines—are expected to take effect,'' John Sabini, chairman of the State Racing and Wagering Board, said in a statement. "The court's actions confirm that cheaters who repeatedly violate the rules have no place in New York racing.'' Cheaters have no place in any part of racing and perhaps ultimate victory in this long, still-incomplete battle will encourage regulators elsewhere to straighten their spines, fortify resolve and move against those who violate the rules at the expense of an industry dominated by the honest and hard-working. Punishment is a deterrent only when it hurts. ■
