few last minute thoughts and congratulations regarding the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes won this year by Florida-bred Well Defined (page 14 of this issue). Well Defined is part of the longtime popular team of trainer Kathleen O’Connell and owner-breeders Gil and Marilyn Campbell in the name of their Stonehedge LLC based in Williston, Fla. The longtime Florida breeders—who live in Tyngsboro, Mass., and have been part of the thoroughbred industry since 1982—won the Sam F. Davis for the first time but it was their second Kentucky Derby prep race at Tampa Bay Downs. Their Watch Me Go took the 2011 Tampa Bay Derby (G2). Campbell has also bred several other stakes winners including Grade 1-winner Marlin, who took the 1996 Arlington Million; Blazing Sword, winner of the Grade 2 Washington Park Handicap; Scandalous Act, who swept the 2013 filly divisions of the Florida Sire Stakes; Ivanavinalot, a winner of two FSS races and the dam of champion Songbird; Grade 3 Maryland Sprint Handicap winner Always Sunshine; Grade 2 Swale Stakes winner This One’s For Phil; and Ryan’s for Real, winner of the Grade 3 Bill Hartack Memorial Handicap. Campbell was also honored as the Florida breeder of the Year in 1997, 2013 and 2016 by the FTBOA and was named the 1997 outstanding owner/breeder of the year by TOBA and regionally by TOBA in 2013 and 2016. Campbell has served six terms on the FTBOA board beginning in 1997 and was the association’s president from 2007 – 2010… Top Florida sprinters X Y Jet and Imperial Hint had sub-par efforts in their respective prep races before the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen sponsored by Gulf News to be run at Meydan Race Course in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Dubai World Cup day on Mar. 30. However, both had difficult times in their efforts as X Y Jet was caught in a suicidal pace in the Sunshine Millions Sprint (page 31 of this issue) in which he went the first quartermile in :21.09 and finished fourth behind winner Quijote. Meanwhile Imperial Hint finished an uncharacteristic third in the Feb. 16 Pelican Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs behind win-

ner Killybegs Captain. However, trainer Luis Carvajal Jr. said a foot bruise manifested itself during the Pelican and he thinks the diminutive dynamo will still run in Dubai…Congratulations to all of this year’s Florida-bred champions and their connections (page 18 of this issue). The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association recognized each of the 2018 champions at their annual awards gala on Monday, Mar. 11 at the Circle Square Cultural Center, in Ocala. This year’s Sapphire & Diamonds Gala began with a cocktail reception and silent auction at 5:30 p.m. The live auction and ceremony, which included the announcement of the 2018 FTBOA Horse of the Year, was at 7:45 p.m… Congratulations to Donald R. Dizney and his team at Double Diamond Farm who are celebrating the first Eclipse Award champion sired by their First Dude, who stands at the farm. The leading Florida sire produced the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) winner and champion Shamrock Rose, who was bred by Tom and Lori Fackler’s Best A Luck Farm located in Reddick, Fla… As breeding sheds open around the state, we would like to wish everyone a very happy and successful 2019 breeding season… While working on the program for the 2018 FTBOA Gala, one sees that there have been 170 Florida-breds who have achieved millionaire status. Impressive… Good luck to the folks at Oakton Farm in Morriston, Fla., the new stallion station that is standing Big Drama, Uncle Vinny, Suns Out Guns Out, Suntracer, Black Onyx and Greatness. ■

Forever Liesl Gets First Stakes Win in Ladies Handicap Kallenburg Farms’ Forever Liesl earned her first black type victory Jan. 20 at Aqueduct as the 5-year-old mare won the 148th running for the $100,000 Ladies Handicap. The Florida-bred mare was ridden by Eric Cancel and went off as the 2-1 second choice behind 3-2 favorite Sara Street in the field of seven fillies and mares who went a mile-and-one-eighth on a sloppy and sealed main track after the race

was taken off the turf. Assigned the co-highweight of 120 pounds, which included an additional two pounds that all riders were mandated to carry as part of a weather-related safety initiative, Forever Liesl broke from post six before settling toward the back of the pack as Uruquayan stakes-winner Sexy Reasons (Arg) went to the front and put a length lead on 10-1 runner Total Control as they crossed the finish line for the first time. Sexy Reasons set fractions of :24.72 for the first quarter-mile and :48.41 for the half as they raced down the backstretch with Total Control still just off her in second with Sara Street third. Going into the far turn, Sexy Reasons continued to show the way while going six furlongs in 1:14.72, but Total Control and Sara Street ranged up to threaten at the five-sixteenths pole as Forever Liesl began her rally while circling horses from further back. Sara Street emerged from the turn in front with Forever Liesl in full gear on the outside as those two raced together down the stretch. Sara Street remained resilient until they were inside the sixteenth pole when Forever Liesl drew clear to win by four-and-a-quarter lengths in a time of 1:54.12 over the sloppy and sealed track. Sara Street finished second, seven and one-half lengths in front of Crimson Frost in third. Total Control, Matty’s Magnum, Sexy Reasons and Entrall completed the order of finish.

Sara Street is trained by Michelle Nevin, who said she was happy about the race moving to the main track. “She did great and Eric [Cancel] gave her a great ride,” Nevin said. “She looked very professional and won nicely. With the sloppy track, we were definitely confident coming into today with her previous success on it, but we’re glad it all worked out. We’ll enjoy this win for now and I’ll talk with [owner] Jeffrey [Kallenberg] to see what he wants to do next.” Cancel said he was equally pleased. “I was very confident. When I rode her the first time [the Grade 3 Turnback the Alarm] I knew what type of horse I had underneath me,” Cancel said. “Today, I was just trying to follow Dylan [Davis, aboard Sara Street]. He had the best horse in the race and that’s what I did. I just kept on following him, and when we turned for home it was just me and him and she just took off. “I wasn’t able to save too much ground, but I wasn’t really concerned about it because I was close. The horse that I was following [Sara Street] was right next to me, so I thought I was in a good spot. Once I asked her, she just kept on going and never gave up on me.” Forever Liesl is by Mineshaft out of Ava Pie, by Distorted Humor and she was bred in the Sunshine State by Farm III. It was her fifth win from 16 career starts and the $55,000 first place check increased her bankroll to $289,564. She paid $6.10 to win, $3.10 and $2.40. ■

Ortiz, Jr. The Jason Servis-trained World of Trouble also won the $125,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Marion County by 13 ¾ lengths over a sloppy and sealed Tampa Bay Downs racing surface on Dec. 15. In winning the Turf Sprint, World of Trouble earned the $93,000 winning check plus a $25,000 win-only bonus for Florida-breds that was presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Owners’ and Breeders’ Association. The Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint was the first of nine stakes on the 12-race program, highlighted by the $9 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (Grade 1), and the $7 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1). Billed as a rematch of the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Grade 1) when Stormy Liberal bested World of Trouble by a short neck at Churchill Downs on Nov. 3, the Turf Sprint lost that moniker when trainer Peter Miller scratched Stormy Liberal. But even with the departure of Stormy Liberal, the Turf Sprint presented a much more competitive group of foes for World of Trouble including 3-1 second choice Recruiting Ready, who had shipped in from New York where in his previous start had won the $101,000 Gravesend Stakes at Aqueduct on Dec. 23. Despite the 1-5 confidence the wagering public put on World of Trouble before the start of the Turf Classic, Servis said he was a bit shaken. “We couldn’t get bandages on him behind,” Servis said after the race. “I mean the whole thing coming to the race, I really wasn’t

World of Trouble Dominates Sloppy Turf Sprint Florida-bred Earns $25,000 FTBOA Win Bonus While rain forced the $150,000 Gulfstream Turf Sprint to be moved from the Gulfstream Park turf course to five furlongs on a sloppy and sealed main track and prompted the scratching of three runners including favorite Stormy Liberal, World of Trouble proved again that the racing surface is of little concern to the Florida-bred star. For the second consecutive time, World of Trouble won a stakes on an off-track as he took the Jan. 26 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint by two-and-three-quarters lengths while under wraps from jockey Irad

Galvano Looks for Action on Gambling

Senate President Bill Galvano said recently he wants to take action on sports betting and a new deal with the Seminole Tribe following warnings from Florida’s top legislative economist that the future of state gambling revenue is uncertain. “We are in a dubious state right now, and I think it is worthy of us to create stability with the Seminole Tribe,” Galvano, R-Bradenton, told reporters at an Associated Press event in Tallahassee. State officials have negotiated agreements with the Seminole Tribe over the years, and the current deal expires in May. With no clear path forward on a future deal, it is hard to predict if the state can depend on the estimated $343 million it receives from the tribe

Jerry Wayne Parks Jerry Wayne Parks, 67, left his earthly home to go to his eternal home on Feb. 5, 2019. Jerry was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended the University of Kentucky on a football scholarship. His insurance career began with Fasig Tipton Livestock Underwriters in 1975. In 1984 Jerry and Syl Kiger started Kiger-Parks Insurance. In 1986 Jerry Parks Equine Insurance was founded and eventually Parks Insurance Corporation was added. And as Jerry Parks they say, the rest is history. In June 2016 Jerry Parks Insurance Group was sold to Integro USA, which was subsequently sold to EPIC Holdings Inc. in 2019. Jerry’s passions were his family, his office and team, who he treated like family, the thoroughbred industry and the insurance world. He was a huge supporter of The Boys and Girls Club of Marion County, The Ocala Farm Ministry and The Florida Thoroughbred Retirement Program. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Stanley Earl Parks and Opal Christine Parks along with his younger sister Debbie. He is survived by his wife, Diane; Margaret Palmer, the mother of his sons, Jeremy Parks and Bryan Parks; his brothers, James Rankin Parks (Glenna) and Stanley Earl Parks Jr. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly. A memorial service was held on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019, at Grace Episcopal Church, 503 SE Broadway, Ocala, Fla., followed by a celebration of life at Ocala Breeders Sales Company Sales Pavilion. LLC of Bethlehem, Pa. “He’s a nice horse,” Ortiz said of World of Trouble. “He broke well so I just tried to hold it together. When I asked him to go he just exploded. Jason let me ride him the way I wanted. I’ve been on him a few times now, so our confidence is high.” World of Trouble is by Kantharos out of Meets Expectations, by Valid Expectations and he was bred in Florida by Daryl S. Clark of Plantation, Fla., under the name of his Darsan Inc. World of Trouble has won six of 10 career starts with earnings of $671,400. Meets Expectations is also a half-sister to Pleasant Acres stallion Bucchero and she also has a 2-year-old colt, also by Kantharos. She was bred to Ocala Stud’s The Big Beast in 2018 and to Frosted this year. World of Trouble paid $2.40 to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. In addition to his wins over sloppy tracks in the Turf Sprint and FSS Marion County, he won the Allied Forces and Quick Call Stakes sprinting on turf and the Pasco Stakes at seven furlongs at Tampa Bay Downs last year on a fast track. He is also gradedstakes-placed around two turns having finished third in the mile and one-sixteenth Tampa Derby (G2) last year. ■ FILE PHOTO

thrilled about. And he was just doing okay. So getting it done, man, was gratifying. He ran on no toe grabs. I was happy with the mud, but he’s not an easy horse to deal with. We had a hard time getting the bridle on him, and the back bandages.” But it was all business for World of Trouble after the race began when Recruiting Ready got a great start from the outside post five and had a half-length on World of Trouble, who left from post two. However, it was only a few more strides before Ortiz had World of Trouble in front of Recruiting Ready as those two made the first quarter-mile in a quick :22.18. Singandcryindubai raced in third, about two-and-one-half lengths off the leaders with Little Chesney and Belle Tapisserie trailing. But the battle was on the front end as World of Trouble and Recruiting Ready kept at each other around the turn with World of Trouble on the inside. It appeared as though the fight would continue into the stretch when World of Trouble quickly jetted away from Recruiting Ready at the top of the lane after clocking the half-mile in :44.37. There was little question as to the outcome as World of Trouble drew off from his rivals with little urging from Oritz and they galloped under the wire in :56.44 with Recruiting Ready holding on for second. Belle Tapisserie rallied to get third followed by Singandcryindubai and Little Chesney. The time for the race equated to a 107 Beyer Speed figure which was the second highest of the day behind only City of Light’s 112 in winning the Pegasus World Cup (G1). “He’s a runner,” Servis continued. “A mile-and-a-sixteenth in the Tampa Bay Derby. He doesn’t want to run a mile-and-a-sixteenth, but he hung in there. [Co-owner] Mike Dubb will map out [his schedule]. I guess Keeneland is on the radar, [or] New York.” World of Trouble is owned by Dubb of Long Island, N.Y. in partnership with Sol Kumin’s Madaket Stables LLC of New York City and Michael Caruso’s Bethlehem Stables

First Dude Sires Champion Double Diamond Farm stallion First Dude was already on his way to having a banner year when his daughter Shamrock Rose won the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (Grade 1) at Churchill Downs in early November but the bay filly put an accent on 2018 for her Florida-based sire when she was named the champion female sprinter at the Eclipse Awards at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 24. Owned by Manfred and Penny Conrad’s Conrad Farms and bred by Thomas and Lori Fackler of Reddick, Fla., under the name of their Best A Luck Farm LLC, Shamrock Rose finished the year with four consecutive stakes victories having taken the $100,000 Malvern Rose Stakes at Presque Isle Downs on Aug. 5, the $100,000 La Lorgnette Stakes at Woodbine on Sept. 8 and the Grade 2 Lexus Raven Run Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 20 before winning the Filly and Mare Sprint. Shamrock Rose is out of Slew’s Quality, by Elusive Quality and compiled a record of four wins from seven starts with earnings of $848,076 for the year. She has $924,962 in career earnings from five wins in 11 starts. She is trained by Ocala resident Mark Casse and she is also a graduate of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales 2017 April Sale where she sold for $120,000 from the Best A Luck consignment. ■ Champion Female Sprinter Shamrock Rose

The ambiguity over gambling revenue also comes after Floridians voted in November to phase out greyhound racing by 2020 and approved a constitutional amendment that gives voters control over casino expansion in the state, a move that limits the Legislature’s power over what it can do with gaming. “We are operating in a different

By BROCK SHERIDAN lorida-bred Well Defined left little doubt that when things go his way, he can be difficult on his race-day opponents as he won the $200,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes (Grade 3) at Tampa Bay Downs Feb. 9 while leading from start to finish. In doing so, Gilbert G. and Marilyn Campbell’s homebred under their Stonehedge LLC banner picked up 10 points towards qualifying for the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) to be run at Churchill Downs on May 4 and a $50,000 Florida-bred win bonus from the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association. After winning the $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes In Reality by seven-and-one-half lengths while leading gate to wire in August at Gulfstream Park, Well Defined had a difficult time in his next two starts when 12th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Churchill Downs in November and when fifth in the $100,000 Mucho Macho Man at Gulfstream on Jan. 5. “His rear end slipped out from underneath him in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile,” trainer Kathleen O’Connell said after the Sam F. Davis. “And he was compromised early when he ran in the Mucho Macho Man and got bottled up inside. He’s a young horse who is improving, mind-wise and everything-wise.” Well Defined’s improvement was apparent right from the start of the mile-and-one-sixteenth Sam F. Davis as the dark bay or brown gelding burst from the starting gate from post nine with jockey Pablo Morales aboard. The quick start allowed Morales to make an easy run to the rail while leading 9-5 favorite and Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity winner Knicks Go into the clubhouse turn followed the Robert Hess Jr.-trained maiden Going for Gold and $101,000 Central Park Stakes-winner Five Star General. Well Defined established a clear lead moving out of the turn and was in front of Knicks Go by three lengths as they made a run down the backstretch after a first quartermile in a reasonable :23.23. Down the backstretch, Knicks Go and jockey Alex Jiminez tried to get closer to the front-running Well Defined but when they passed a half-mile in :47.03, there was still two lengths of daylight between the two with Going for Gold remaining in third, a length-and-one quarter further back.

F

Knicks Go began to advance on Well Defined around the turn but when they made their way into the stretch, Well Defined was again three lengths to the good of Knicks Go with recent maiden winner Kentucky Wildcat making a late run to challenge for second. However, Well Defined and Morales cruised to the finish line in a final time of 1:42.70 on the fast track, .26 seconds off 2018 Sam F. Davis-winner Flameaway’s stakes record, with Kentucky Wildcat another two-and-three-quarter lengths in second. So Alive rallied to get third with Counter Offer fourth. Knicks Go faded to fifth ahead of Five Star General, Still Dreaming, Moonster and Going for Gold. Cave Run was scratched. “That’s very, very special to do it at Tampa Bay,” an emotional O’Connell said. “He’s had little things that have happened and he’s grown up mentally and physically, and today he showed up with his game face on. I like this horse a lot and the

Maybe the [Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G3) on March 9] – who knows.” Morales also said he thought Well Defined came well prepared for the Sam F. Davis. “[Well Defined] has a ton of natural talent and I was going to take advantage of that today,” Morales explained. “I wasn’t too worried about where I was going to be because we were really lucky with the draw position on the outside, so I figured I was going to ride a cool race. The horse is naturally fast and has a super-long stride, so I was going to come out running, but if somebody wanted to take the lead, I was okay with that. All I wanted to do was ride a cool and collected race and keep my horse running.” It was the third win from seven career starts for Well Defined, a son of With Distinction out of the Medaglia d’Oro mare Fru Fru. Fru Fru also has a yearling filly by Journeyman Stud stallion Khozan and was bred in 2018 to Ocala Stud resident Greenpointcrusader. He earned $170,000 in the Sam F. Davis including the $50,000 FTBOA win bonus and now stands with a career tally of $490,570. Let go as the fourth choice in the wagering at 7-1, Well Defined paid $16 to win, $7.60 and $4.60. Well Defined’s victory was part of a Festival Preview Day 39 Presented by Lambholm South card that also featured Hawksmoor’s victory in the $175,000 Lambholm South Endeavour Stakes (G3) and Inspector Lynley’s triumph in the $175,000 Tampa Bay Stakes (G3) on the turf. In the day’s non-graded stakes, the $150,000 Suncoast Stakes, Point of Honor won, perhaps stamping herself as a Kentucky Oaks (G1) candidate. Total wagering on the 12-race card of $9,521,537 was $17,185 more than last year’s Festival Preview Day and the second-highest total on a Sam F. Davis card to the $10,743,714 wagered in 2016. ■ THE FLORIDA HORSE • MARCH 2019 15

Rewards Two-time Grade 1 stakes-winner Imperial Hint leads the class of 2018 Florida-Bred Champions.

By JOANN GUIDRY ot only did the 2018 Florida-bred champions record stellar seasons, they also proved to be as versatile as they were excellent. In the whole new class of champions, four of the six earned multiple honors. The group won 19 stakes, including five graded stakes. Imperial Hint captured three graded stakes, including two Grade 1 events, and Code Warrior notched a pair of Grade 3 stakes. Four of the champions, Garter and Tie, Cookie Dough, Stormy Embrace and Miz Mayhem, are homebreds. World of Trouble and Imperial Hint were bought privately. The 2018 Florida-bred champions were determined by points accumulated in blacktype stakes competition during the year-long FTBOA Chase To The Championship. The FTBOA-registered Florida-bred with the most points in each division on Dec. 31 is deemed the champion of that division. Any Eclipse Award and/or Breeders' Cup winner is recognized as division champion regardless of point standings. Horses must win at least one race during the year to be eligible for championship honors. Year-end ties are broken by graded-stakes earnings. The Florida-bred Horse of the Year and Broodmare of the Year, as well as other year-end awards, are voted on by the FTBOA Board of Directors and/or based on season-ending statistics. All year-end awards are presented at the annual FTBOA Gala.

FLORIDA-BRED CHAMPIONS

2018 FLORIDA-BRED CHAMPION 2-YEAR-OLD COLT/GELDING Garter and Tie has the distinction of being the only juvenile this year to finish in the top three in each of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes races at Gulfstream for 2-yearolds. The precocious colt put together a sterling season, posting two wins, two seconds and one third in but six outings to bank $273,570. He began his aforementioned accomplishment with a second to Cajun Firecracker in the $100,000 FTBOA FSS Dr. Fager on Aug. 4 at Gulfstream Park. A month later, Garter and Tie broke his maiden and won his first stakes race at the same time. Fred Brei's Jacks Or Better Farm homebred captured the $200,000 FTBOA FSS Affirmed by a half-length over Well Defined. Cajun Firecracker was third. Winning time for the seven furlongs was 1:23.05. Garter and Tie's Affirmed Stakes win gave Brei his 19th FSS win, the most by a breeder and an owner. Jacks Or Better Farm homebreds swept FSS divisions three times: Jackson Bend (2009), Awesome Feather (2010) and Fort Loudon (2011). Trained by Ralph Nicks, Garter and Tie would wrap up his FSS record with a second to Well Defined in the $400,000 FTBOA FSS In Reality on Sep. 29. With the FSS done, Garter and Tie was given a well-deserved break from the races. When he returned, he quickly found the winner's circle again. In the $75,000 Smooth Air Stakes on Dec. 8 at Gulfstream Park. Garter and Tie prevailed by a neck over Souper Jackpot. Union's Destiny was third. Garter and Tie stopped the clock in 1:38.44 for the mile. By Brei’s Brooks 'n Down out of Garter Belt, by Anasheed, Garter and Tie is Jacks Or Better Farm breed-

COOKIE DOUGH 2018 FLORIDA-BRED CHAMPION 2-YEAR-OLD FILLY Maybe it took Cookie Dough a little time, but she finally baked into a full-fledged racehorse. After finishing third in back-to-back maiden special weights, Cookie Dough finished a disappointing sixth to Capture Your Dreams in the $100,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Desert Vixen. But things would soon get much better for Alan Cohen's Arindel homebred. On Sept.1 at Gulfstream Park, Cookie Dough was ready to put a little icing on her racing career. She won the $200,000 FTBOA FSS Susan's Girl by an impressive sixand-a-half lengths over Starship Nala. Blazing Brooke was third. Winning time for the seven furlongs was 1:24.46. Then in the $400,000 FTBOA FSS My Dear Girl on Sept. 29, Cookie Dough added some sprinkles. The Stanley I. Gold trainee rolled to victory by seven-and-a half lengths over Starship Nala. Blazing Brooke was again third. The winner stopped the clock in 1:47.50 for the mile-and-one-sixteenth. The win gave Gold a record 20 FSS wins by a trainer. By Brethen out of Brooke's Valentine, by Fusaichi Pegasus, Cookie Dough posted two wins and two thirds to bank $372,500 on the season. Graded-stakes-winner Brethen stands at Ocala-based Arindel Farm as property of a partnership. Alan Cohen, who raced 2006 multiple gradedstakes-winning millionaire and Eclipse Award champion Wait a While, established 500-acre Arindel Farm in 2004. The operation was the leading Florida breeder by 2017 Florida-bred foals registered with the FTBOA with 48. In addition to Cookie Dough, recent stakes winners bred by Arindel include Archer Road, Blond Bomber, Bonita, Richard the Great and Sweet Khalees.

third. Winning time for the five and a half furlongs was 1:04.11 on a yielding turf. Trainer Jason Servis next saddled World of Trouble in the listed Allied Forces Stakes on Sept. 8 at Belmont Park. It was another winning romp by five-and-threequarter lengths over Dirty with Reed Kan third. World of Trouble stopped the clock in 1:09.71 for the six furlongs on turf rated good. The Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) would be next on World of Trouble's itinerary, and the Florida-bred represented the Sunshine State well. He sped to the lead quickly, opening up four lengths on the field before being joined by Stormy Liberal in deep stretch. The two battled head-to-head with Stormy Liberal, the 2017 BC Turf Sprint winner, surging at the wire to win by a mere neck. World of Trouble was second by seven-and-a quarter lengths over show finisher Disco Partner. World of Trouble closed out his season with a bookend win at Tampa Bay Downs. On Dec. 15, he captured the $125,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Marion County by 13¾ lengths. His winning time was 1:22.50 for the seven furlongs on a sloppy track. Raced by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables LLC and Bethlehem Stables LLC, World of Trouble banked $449,000 on the season.

2018 Florida-Bred Champion 3-Year-Old Colt/Gelding 2018 Florida-Bred Champion Turf Horse Living up to his name, World of Trouble was just that to those who ran against him. In seven starts on the season, he won four stakes, including two listed stakes, and was graded stakes-placed twice. The latter category included a narrow loss in a Grade 1 stakes. Bred by Daryl and Sandy Clark's Darsan Inc., World of Trouble opened up his season impressively on the dirt. In the Pasco Stakes on Jan. 20 at Tampa Bay Downs, he roared to a victory by 13 3/4 lengths over He Hate Me. Going gate to wire, World of Trouble set fractions of :22.51, :44.91. 1:09.11 and won in 1:21.52 for the seven furlongs. The Pasco Stakes was the first blacktype stakes-win for World of Trouble. Following a third to Quip in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) on March 10, World of Trouble would ship to New York and a switch in surface to the turf. That move proved a successful one in the listed Quick Call Stakes on Aug. 8 at Saratoga. The Kantharos colt won by a length-and-three-quarters over Fig Jelly with Dirty

Back in her home state to close out the year, Miz Mayhem recorded her fourth stakes win of the season. She captured the $100,000 listed Lightning City Stakes on Dec. 1 at Tampa Bay Downs by a length-and-a-quarter. Finishing second was Smiling Causeway with Broadway Run third. Winning time for the five furlongs on the turf was :55.37. Laurie Plesa's homebred put together a championship-worthy season, winning four stakes. After posting facile consecutive allowance optional claiming wins, Miz Mayhem moved into stakes company with the same ease. On May 27 in the $75,000 Cedar Key Stakes at Gulfstream Park, Miz Mayhem notched her initial career stakes victory. She was the best by a length-anda-quarter over Auldwood Lane with Really Proud third. Winning time for the five-furlong turf sprint was :55.12. Trained by Edward Plesa Jr., Miz Mayhem continued to prove she more than belonged in stakes company. In the $75,000 Nicole's Dream Stakes on June 10 at Gulfstream Park, she crossed the wire first by a length-and-a-half over Island Reward. Bones finished third. IMPERIAL HINT 2018 Florida-Bred Champion Older Male 2018 Florida-Bred Champion Male Sprinter 2018 Florida-bred Horse of the Year Diminutive by racehorse standards, Imperial Hint more than makes up for that shortcoming with his speed and racing ability. Already a multiple-graded-stakes winner heading into the 2018 season, Imperial Hint upped his game. In a short but oh-so-sweet season of only six starts, the little bay had notched not one but two Grade 1 victories. And he threw in a Grade 2 just for fun. Imperial Hint began the season in his home state at Tampa Bay Downs on March 25 in the Horse Races Now Sprint Stakes. It was a facile five-length victory over Deland with Delta Bluesman third. Winning time for the six furlongs was 1:10.78. From there, Imperial Hint went on a road trip and posted three graded-stakes wins on his way to becoming a millionaire. First stop was Belmont Park on June 8 for the True North Stakes (G2). The Luis Carvajal Jr. trainee didn't disappoint, prevailing by a neck over Whitmore with Bobby Abu Dhabi third. He stopped the clock in 1:15.02 for the six-and-a-half furlongs. In winning the True North Stakes, Imperial Hint became a member of the Florida-bred millionaires club. Raced by Raymond Mamone, Imperial Hint moved on to Saratoga for the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G1) on July 28. Different track, same results. The 5-

year-old Imperialism horse won by three-and-three-quarters length over Warrior's Club. Sweetontheladies was third. In top form, Imperial Hint won in 1:08.98 for the six furlongs to score his first Grade 1 win. As impressive as that effort was, Imperial Hint topped that in the Vosburgh Stakes (G1) on Sept. 29 at Belmont Park. He posted a winning time of 1:08.27 for the six furlongs, besting Mr. Crow by a length-and-aquarter. Silver Ride was third. Imperial Hint's next start was a rematch with Roy H in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1). In the 2017 edition, Imperial Hint was second to Roy H. But the latter once again prevailed with Imperial Hint finishing third to close out his stellar season. Bred by Shade Tree Thoroughbreds Inc. Imperial Hint banked $767,500 and was an Eclipse Award finalist as champion sprinter.

STORMY EMBRACE 2018 FLORIDA-BRED CHAMPION OLDER FEMALE 2018 FLORIDA-BRED CHAMPION FEMALE SPRINTER Dr. Matt and Lona Vuskovich’s Matalona Thoroughbreds of Gainesville, Fla., saw their Florida-homebred Stormy Embrace become a multiple FTBOA titlist as

she was named the champion older female and champion female sprinter. The chestnut mare started the year winning four of five races including victories in a Jan. 21 optional claiming race by nine-and-one-quarter lengths at Tampa Bay Downs and an overnight handicap—also at Tampa Bay in March— before she stepped up against stakes competition. She won the seven furlong Musical Romance Stakes at Gulfstream on May 19 after pressing the pace from between horses and went on to win by a half-length as the 9-5 favorite. She then put in her best performance of the year in the Grade 2 Princess Rooney Stakes at seven furlongs, also at Gulfstream, on June 30. She finally got out of the starting gate quickly and was able to lead from start to finish—eventually winning by six lengths. She then finished a disappointing third in the Grade 3 Sheer Drama Stakes on Sept. 8 at Gulfstream but a slow start put her in tight quarters with little room to make a winning maneuver. She then traveled to Churchill Downs on Nov. 3 for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) but finished 11th behind winner Shamrock Rose. However, she bounced back in the Dec. 15 Sugar Swirl Stakes at Gulfstream Park to finish second, again after a slow start and some early bumping. During the year, the Kathleen O’Connell-trained daughter of Circular Quay out of Stormy Allure, by Stormy Atlantic won four of eight starts with earnings of $300,020. ■

Souper Tapit, Win Win Win Produce Another Live Oak Stakes Double harlotte Weber and her Live Oak Plantation have had some very nice days at the races with her Florida homebreds. It comes to mind that on Oct. 6, 1991 at Belmont Park, her Sultry Song won the Grade 2 Jamaica Handicap two races before her Solar Splendor won the Turf Classic Invitational (G1) at the same track. Sometimes things just work out. That seemed to be the case at Gulfstream Park on Sunshine Millions Day as 23-1 longshot Quijote took advantage of a furious pace to rally and win the $100,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint over odds-on choice and two-time Sunshine Millions Sprint winner X Y Jet. The Sunshine Millions Sprint was for 3-year-olds and

older registered Florida-breds who were going six furlongs on main track.. Twice Quijote has faced X Y Jet and twice the 4-yearold gelding has come up short. He was fifth, beaten 10 ¼ lengths by X Y Jet in last year’s Sunshine Millions Classic; and six-and-one-half lengths behind his nemesis in the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector Stakes in December of 2017. But in this year’s Sunshine Millions Sprint, things began to look good from start for Quijote as X Y Jet got off to a slow start from the inside post one. That gave Reason to Soar, who was second to X Y Jet in the Grade 3 Smile Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream in June, an opportunity to steal the early lead from the prohibitive 1-2 choice as he shot to the front from post two. That forced X Y Jet and jockey Emisael Jaramillo to quickly hustle up alongside a stubborn Reason to Soar on the lead and the momentum forced those two into a breakneck first quarter in :21.09. Moving into the far turn, the two frontrunners continued on an electric pace to lead closest rival Springmeir by about seven lengths as Quijote and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. bided their time toward the back and about 10 lengths from the lead. After a half-mile in a suicidal :43.54, the pace began to take its toll on X Y Jet and Reason to Soar as they turned for home in front but with legs getting weary. By this time, Quijote had deleted the margin between himself and the two leaders and was on even terms before they got to the final sixteenth of a mile. Quijote went to the front from the outside and went on to an easy three-and-three-quarter-length win over Ray’swarrior in second with Sweetontheladies third. X Y Jet, Reason to Soar and Springmeir completed the order of finish. The time for the six furlongs was 1:09.98 over the fast track. “We actually knew there was going to be a lot of speed, and he’s a closing type. It’s nice when things go to plan,” trainer Georgina Baxter said. “The plan was that they were going to go at each other’s throats and we would pick up the pieces in the end.” Ortiz also spoke about how the race shaped up well for Quijote. “I tried to keep [Quijote] in the clear,” Ortiz said. “I knew there was going to be some pace so I just rode him with confidence and tried to wait as long as I can. When I turned for home, I hit him and my horse responded really well and they started coming back to me. When

Trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Javier Castellano, Big Changes sat just behind longshot He’s Bankable and Class and Cash as they raced around the first turn before stopping the timer at :23.34 for the first two furlongs. They galloped in that order through a half-mile in :47.10 before Big Changes began to inch closer to the leaders with an outside run. Class and Cash took over at the top of the stretch after six furlongs in 1:10.63 with Big Changes up to give him a run from the outside. Class and Cash remained resilient until the eighth pole when Big Changes took the lead on his way to a length-and-one-half victory in 1:40.48 over the firm turf. “We were very excited to ship in there and get a victory,” Cox said by phone from New Orleans. “He ran very well. Javier let those couple horses in front of him show the way. He had a good trip and he showed his class turning for home. He’s a nice horse.” Castellano spoke about how pleased he was with how the race shaped up. “It was a perfect trip behind two speed horses,” Castellano said. “I could have been on the lead but you have to take your best shot to win the race. Starship Jubilee won two consecutive races at Woodbine in August and September when the Kevin Attard trainee took an optional claiming starter allowance and the Grade 2 Canadian Stakes before tripping up in her next two starts when fourth in the Grade 1 E.P. But she would not be denied against 12 rivals in the mile and one-sixteenth Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf. Sent off as the even money favorite from the outside post 13, Starship Jubilee gave her supporters some anxious moments just before the start of the Millions Filly and Mare Turf as she became upset in the starting gate and prematurely forced open the gates to her starting stall. However, the 6-year-old mare quickly returned to business with the start of the race as she and Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano were comfortable to sit in a stalking fourth-position about two lengths behind early leaders Madame Uno and Picara. Madame Uno led around the clubhouse turn and through the first two furlongs in a pedestrian-like :24.81 followed by Picara, Florida Fuego and Starship Jubilee.

Starship Jubilee began to make her move while racing three-wide midway on the turn and by the time they went six furlongs in 1:12.63, she was on even terms with Madame Uno and Picara as they raced for home. otulism is a highly fatal disease caused by toxins produced by spore-forming bacteria (several types of Clostridium botulinum) found in the environment, generally in the soil. These bacteria occasionally live harmlessly in the digestive tracts of plant-eating animals but generally do not cause disease except under certain conditions that allow them to multiply and create toxins. Botulism causes “shaker foal syndrome” in which affected foals become weak and collapse. Amy Johnson, DVM, DACVIM (Large Animal Internal Medicine, New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania) says these bacteria produce a neurotoxin which is considered the most potent and deadly toxin known to man. “The interesting thing is that these bacteria are present in soil all across the U.S.— just about everywhere. They only produce toxin if conditions are right, and the most important factor is lack of oxygen. There are also some pH and moisture constraints, but the big factor is an anaerobic environment with very low oxygen levels,” she explains. This is similar to conditions that facilitate toxin formation in other Clostridial diseases like tetanus, blackleg, malignant edema, etc. “Horses most commonly get botulism when they ingest the toxin in feed, usually forage. The most common situation where botulism might be a risk would be hay in big bales that were harvested too moist or stored improperly. If the inner parts are wet and spoil, this creates ideal conditions of moisture and low oxygen environment.” she says.

Type B is most frequently seen east of the Mississippi River, especially in the mid-Atlantic region and Kentucky. This is what usually contaminates hay or other forage. On the West Coast we more frequently see type A in the soil. It affects horses the same way, and botulism occurs when type A spores in the soil contaminate big bales of hay,” says Johnson. “Type C is associated with dead animals. It is seen sporadically anywhere, but is not as common. In our laboratory here, where we do lots of testing for botulism, type C is the least common that we see in horses. Type B is by far the most common in this part of the country. Some estimates

stance, with all four legs close together under the body— because they are weak and trying to fight gravity. Eventually they spend more and more time lying down,” she says. “Affected horses lie down frequently, and for longer periods than normal. As the disease progresses, they may lose the ability to get up at all, or can’t stand up for more than a few minutes at a time. They become so dysphagic (unable to swallow) that they can’t swallow their own saliva and it comes out the nose or mouth. They can’t drink, and become dehydrated,” she explains. Early signs are sometimes misdiagnosed as colic or choke. “It looks like choke because they can’t swallow and there is food coming out of the nose or mouth. It can look like colic because they are not eating normally, and are lying down a lot. If they stand up they are shaking,” says Johnson. “The best clinical test for botulism is the tongue tone test, because lack of tongue strength is one of the first places we see muscle tone diminish. With a normal horse, if you pull the tongue gently out of the mouth and hold it to the side, as soon as you let go, they pull it right back into the mouth. With a normal horse you may not even be able to pull it out at all because they have very strong muscles in the tongue,” she says. “By contrast, a horse with botulism can’t pull its tongue back as effectively. If you pull the tongue out the side of the mouth (especially if you hold the jaws shut so they can’t chomp), the horse has a hard time pulling the tongue back. It takes more than a couple tries to get it back in, and some of them can’t do it.” Another test looks at how well the horse can eat grain. “You offer 8 ounces of sweet feed. A normal horse can consume that amount in less than 2 minutes, and usually less than a minute. But a horse with botulism can’t consume that small amount of grain in less than 2 minutes and sometimes can’t eat it at all,” she says.

“These tests can confirm whether a horse is dysphagic and if the signs might be consistent with botulism. The veterinarian may pass a nasogastric tube like he/she would do for choke/esophageal obstruction. If there’s no blockage, the tube goes right down. One of the clues that it might be botulism is that it is sometimes difficult at first to pass the tube because the horse can’t swallow it. If it’s hard getting the horse to swallow, and then the tube goes right down to the stomach with no problems, this could be indicate that it might be botulism.” The horse may have other signs of weakness. “Eyelid tone might be weak, or the tail tone might be weak, so these are other things to check,” she says. If you pick up the horse’s tail he would normally try to clamp it back down— but might not be able to if he has botulism. TREATMENT

If you suspect the horse got botulism from eating spoiled feed, don’t let him eat any more of that feed. “Make sure none of the other horses eat it. Botulism often appears in outbreaks. If all the horses on a farm are eating the same thing they are all potentially at risk,” says Johnson. “Don’t stress an affected horse. If muscles are exhausted, the disease will progress more quickly. Don’t walk these horses around, or make them stand if they want to lie down. Don’t try to keep them on their feet,” she says. The only specific treatment, and the one that often proves to be life-saving, is giving the horse antitoxin. “It’s easier today to get the antitoxin product. In years past, it was harder to find. Here at New Bolton Center, we were initially the only source, and it was quite expensive. It cost at least $2500 for one unit, to treat one horse. An outbreak with multiple horses affected would be very costly. Now there are a couple commercial companies that produce antitoxin and cost has gone down. It should be more available to practitioners,” she says. It must be given immediately, however, or as soon as

EL Potro

Camino al Kentucky Derby con El Potro Roberto

C

¿Veremos a Galilean enfrentar a Game Winner, Instagrand y compañía? ■

Upcoming Events & Deadlines GALA CELEBRATED CHAMPIONS

The Sapphire & Diamonds FTBOA Horse of the Year Gala was held March 11. Watch the next issue and online for photos. The colors represent the elegance and class of thoroughbred champions. More than 400 industry members, trainers, owners, breeders, fans and their guests attended the sold out event. This year, the event was held once again at the Circle Square Cultural Center ballroom in Ocala, which had expanded to hold the event.

The evening’s agenda included the Florida Thoroughbred Charities extensive silent auction, followed by a lavish dinner and a short live auction of packages which included four original art pieces by Remi Bellocq, a frishing trip for four in the Keys, a Songbird halter donated by Mandy Pope and a trip to a private villa in the Virgin Islands. The night culminated with the awards ceremony where many winners made heartfelt speeches. Fundraising is an important aspect of the event annually for the Florida Thoroughbred Charities. The charity fully supports the Florida Thoroughbred Retirement Farm at the Lowell Correctional Institute. Also known as Second Chance Farm, the program carries the slogan, Helping Horses, Changing Lives, as women inmates are given the opportunity to earn an equine certification degree and learn new skills working with retired thoroughbreds. This enables retired thoroughbreds to develop skills for other disciplines and gives the women a chance to rehab themselves and obtain gainful employment after they are released. The event would not have been possible without the support of many generous sponsors including: Diamond
