Firenze Fire
and His Unique Place in Sports History

hile the 2021 Saratoga Race Course season came to a conclusion with another array of notable performances by some of thoroughbred racing’s biggest stars, it was a runnerup performance by Florida-bred Firenze Fire that may have sparked as much conversation as any. On Aug. 28, Mr. Amore Stables’ Firenze Fire was trying to join a long list of 12 other Florida-breds who have won the Grade 1 Forego and become the second Sunshine State victor in three years after Win Win Win toook thhe prestigious event in 2020. Ridden by his regular jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., Firenze Fire was in a strretch-long battle withh Yaupon and rideer Ricardo Santana Jr. for the winner’s share of the $600,000 Forego. With Yaupon on the rail and Firenze Fire to his outside, thhe two passed the sixteentth pole noses apart when Firenze Fire suddenly tuurned his head toward Yaupon and began to savage his rival. So fast and strong was Firenze Fire in his snapping attttack, that he pulled thhe right rein from Ortiz’s grip and continued to strike at Yaupon f irst with f ive attempted chhomps at Yaupon’s nose and mouth before resolving to tug at his white bridle a few times—before Ortiz regained control and pulled Firenze Fire off of his inside thhe f inal 100 yards. Yaupon and Firenze Fire resumed their normal strides to the wire withh Yaupon prevailing by a head. Just past the f inish line, Santana reached over and grabbed at Ortiz’s silks in apparent jest as the two rid-

ers rode arounnd thhe clubhouse turn while pulling up their respective mounts. While rare, Firenze Fire is not alone in his assault against Yaupon. NYRA photographer Bob Coglianese won an Eclipse Award for photography for captuuring Great Prospector savaging Golden Derby in the 1980 Tremont Stakes at Belmont Park. In August of 2012 at Del Mar, Woodman’ss Luck tried to take a bite out of eventual winner Romeo Royale as those tw wo approached the f inish linne in a $25,000 optional claiming allowance race, withh Romeo Royale prevailing to win by a head. Like Firenze Fire, because Woodman’s Luck f inished second, no action was taken by the stewards, but horses have been disqualif ied if they happened to cross thhe f inish line f irst. Such was the case at Churchill Downs on Aug. 11, 2012 when Chilled and jockey Corey Lanerie won by a nose ahead of Zimmer and Calvin Borel, after Chilled had savaged his rival approaching thhe f inish. Chilled was disqualif ied and placed second. What makes Firenze Fire unique is that he was once a victim in a biting incident. In the Gallant Bob Stakes (G3) at Parx on Sept. 22, 2018, Whereshetoldmetogo and jockey Jeremy Rose were locked in a head bobbing battle to the wire with Ortiz and Firenze Fire. With Firenze Fire gettinng an edge while racing on thhe rail, Whereshetoldmetogo att ttempted to bite his Florida-bred foe nearing the wire before Firenze Fire eventually won by a neck ahead of Whereshetoldmetogo in second, and again, no action was taken by the stewards. Whether Firenze Fire and his two biting incidents can compare with sports mishaps such as a fly ball bouncing off the head of Texas Rangers outf ielder Jose Canseco in May of 1993; or when Minnnesota Vikings defensive line Jim Marshall ran the wrong way with a fumble to score safetyy for thhe opposing San Francisco 49ers in 1964; is debatable. But it is without a doubt unnique in the world of sports. ■

Souper Stonehenge Denies Pink Lloyd Fifth Straight Vigil Victory
■
Live Oak Plantation continued its tear through Woodbine Racecourse thhis year as their Florida homebred Souper Stonehenge won the Aug. 1 US$125,343 Vigil Stakes (Grade 3) while snapping a f iv ive-race win strreak held by Pink Lloyd in the six furlong event. It was the f ifth stakes victory of the Woodbine Season for Livve Oak Plantation and the 11th win overall at the Toronto oval. It was also the second stakes at Woodbine for Souper Stonehenge, who defeated Pink Lloyd in the Grade 3 Jacques Cartier there on June 20. Souper Stonehenge led from start to f inish in winning the Vigil as he and jockeey Patrick Husbands had a length on Green Light Go in second with Pink Lloyd another two lengths back in f ifth through the fiirst quarter mile in :22.96. Souper Stonehenge maintained a daylight advantage around thhe turn as Green Light Go dropped back and Not So Quiet took over in second. At the threeeighths pole, jockey Rafael Hernandez was forced to check Pink Lloyd and they dropped back to last in the f ield of six before restarting once they made thhe top of the stretch. Not So Quiet ranged up to chhallenge Souper Stonehenge at the top of thhe stretch but could not muster a real thhreat as Souper Stonehenge began to draw clear. Souper Stonehenge extended his lead to two lengths in mid-stretcch before Pink Lloyd found his best stride and began to make up ground in-

Not So Quiet was anothher three-quarters of a length farther back in third followed by Cash Dividend, Embolden, and Green Light Go. The f inal time on the fast Tapeta track was 1:09.52 and Souper Stonehenge paid $2.70 to win as the 1-5 favorite. “It’s good to sit on light horses and good to sit on good horses,” Husbands said. I’ve ridden probably 180 big races for Mark [Casse]; he never gave me instructions. I have the conf idence in this horse. “He left thhere — what he wanted to do — [and I] just left him alone. It worked out good today. He’s ’s one of my little favorites. We kid around, we play around. He’s just a horse you want to be around.” The Vigil was the sixth stakes score of the he meet for Casse and the f ifth for jockey Patrick Husbands. Casse has also won two previous runnings of the Vigil with Florida-bred Exciting Story for Harry T. Mangurian in 2001 and Laugh Track in 2013. Husbands had recorded back-to-back Vigil scores with One Way Love in 2000 and Excitiing Story in 2001. Earlier in the day, Casse and Husbands teamed to win the second race with th First Empire. Souper Stonehenge is by Speightstown out of Onepointhreekarats, by Medaglia d’Oro and has now won f ive career races with four seconds and a thirrd from 16 starts while earning $343,705. Souper Stonehenge is thhee f irst foal for Onepointhreekarats, who has also produced graded stakes-placed stakes-winner 4-year-old Tap It to Win, who was also breed by Live Oak Stud and races in the prominent white, red and black colors of Live Oak Plantation. She also has Tapthespeedofsound, an unraced 2-year-old colt by Tapit. Souper Stonehenge was also the second Florida-bred winner on the day at Woodbine after Sir Seamus won a f irst condition allowance in the fourth race for owner Network Stable and trainer Alexander McPherson. Sir Seamus is by Pleasant Acres Stallions resident Handsome Mike out of Gold Diggin Dixie by Dixie Union and was bred by Helen and Joseph Barbazon. ■ Floriidda Focus continues on next page

F Real Talk Goes Gate to Wire to Win Jersey Shore
■
A few jumps out of the starting gate, jockey Paco Lopez knew he was a winner in the $100,000 Jersey Shore Stakes on Aug. 15 at Monmouthh Park. With a pair of speedsters—Mighty Mischief and Moonlite Stroke— to his inside, Lopez and Florida-bred Real Talk got the jump on both from the start of the six-furlong feature and cruised to a front-running fourand-a-half-length victory, with the 3-year-old son of Gemologist notching the f irst staakes win of his 10-race career. Mighty Mischief, in post position three, and Moonlight Strike, in post position one, both looked to have superior early speed on paper. But
Florida-bred Background Rallies to Win Longacres Mile Giddyup Stables LLC’s Florida-bred Background came from off thhe pace to win the $100,000 Longacres Mile Handicap (Grade 3) on Aug. 15, the premier event at Emerald Downs and became the f irst graded stakes-winner for his sire Khozan, who staands in Florida at Journeyman Stuud. Trained by Michael Puhich and ridden by Rocco Bowen, Background also earned his f iirrst stakes win after f in inishinng second too Guest Suite in his previous start in the $100,000 Hanshin Stakes at Arlington Park. Background broke from post seven in the 11-horse f ield of oldeer horses going a mile on the main track and settled into a comfortable position mid-pack, about four lengths off of early leaders Papa’s Golden Boy and fellow Florida-bred Anyportinastorm, who went the f irst two furlongs in :22.94 on the fast trrack. Papa’s Golden Boy, who was coming off of three straight wins including victories in the $50,000 Budweiser Stakes going six furlongs on June 17 and the $50,000 Governor’s Stakes at six ix-and-a-half furlongs on July 11, both at Emerald Downs, was able to get a half-lengthh lead on Anyportinastorm after a half-mile in :45.34 as those two had three lengths on Windribbon in third. Windribbon began to make up ground around the second tuurn as Background also began to advance while racing four-wide. Windribbon drew clear down the stretch and had two-and-a-half lengths on Papa’s Golden Boy in second as they raced thhrough the f inal furlong when Background began his assault on the far outside. Background made a big run in the f inal sixteenth and nabbed Windribbon to win by a head in 1:36.67. Windribbon was two lengths faster than Five Star General in thhird followed by Papa’s 10

Golden Boy, Unmachable, Anyportinastorm, Reelfoot, Hard to Deny, Muncey, Forest Fire and Sir Bregovic. Background went off as the 2-1 favorite and paid $6.60 to win. Giddyup Stables is owned by Bob and Mollyy Rondeau of Normandy Park, Wash., and Puhich won the Longacres Mile for the second time after winning in 2012 with Taylor Said. Bob Rondeau, who is best known as the voice of the Universityy of Washington Huskies football and basketball teams, was elatteed withh the victory. “Unbelievable, I have no voice left at all,” Rondeau said. “[In mid-stretch] there’s no way in the world he wins thhat race, but [Background] had the wherewithal to pull it off. This is an unimaginable thrill.” Bowen, who won tittles at Emerald Downs in 2016, ’17 and ’18, resumed his riding career inn the Midwest last year after missing some 18 months with injuries. Returning to Emerald Downs to win thhe track’s biggest race had the 32-year-old native of Barrbbados in tears. “I can’t believe it… f inally,” Bowen said. “I knew Background wasn’t done, we fought together out there.” Background was bred inn Florida by Brent and Crystal Fernung and is out of Ephyra, by Corinthian. Ephyra has also produced winner Dark rk Ages, by J P’s Gusto; Make History, an unraced 3-yearold f illyy by Fury Kapcori; Aztec, an unraced 2-year-old full-brother to Background; anothher yearling full-brother in Esoteric and a unnnamed weanling full-brother. She was bred to Khozan again in 2021. Background has now won four of 14 career starts with two seconds and four thirds with earnings of $287,532. ■ ■
Lopez never let either get close to the lead, opening up on the f ield a few jumps out of the gate. “I’m not surprised he made thhe lead even with all of the speed inside of him,” winning trainer Carlos David said. “I had Paco Lopez. I called Paco’s agent and said `I need him for this race.’ He said ‘We have to wait for nominations.’ I told him `I don’t care. I need Paco on this horse.’ “Paco was the key. The horse is nice and he’ss fast but Paco getting him out there on the lead was the difference. He rode him great. I was worried about Mighty Mischief but I was also worried about Moonlite Strike because he had the one post and I was thinking he was going to go. I felt I needed to beat both to the spot to get thhe rail and we got it and he got the job done.” After breaking on top, Lopez rolled through fracttions of :22 flat for thhe opening quarter and :44.44 for the half. Withh yet another speedster, Fire Sword, backing out after being frustrated from chasing thhe leader, Mighty Mischief made a thhreewide bid coming around thhe f inal turn. But he found himself in the uncomfortable position of chasing instead of being chased. It was another length back to Moonlite Strike in third. “Sometimes you have to be luckky,” Lopez said. “Sometimes you have to come outt there f iring, sometimes not. He just broke out of the gate so fast. He was right on top after the gate opened. It reminded me of when I rode quarter horses. “I knew Mighty Mischief was the horse to beat and that we would probably have to get the jump on him to win. I let him go and he was able to get comfortable.” The winning time for the six furlongs was 1:10.02, with Real Talk retuurrning $6.40 to win. Owned by Bell Racing LLC, Real Talk now has four wins and three seconds from 10 career starts. David, Gulfstream-based but with a division at Monmouth Park rk the past three years, notched his f irst stakes win at the track withh the victory. Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud, Real Talk is out of the Bernardini mare Woodland Park. Ocala Stud also consigned Real Talk to the 2020 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Open Sale held in July where Bell Racing put in thhe f inal bid of $50,000. ■

But jockey Javier Tavares remained patient and guided Chacalosa through a ground saving trip around the tuurn as she began to pick up horses, althhough she was still f ive lengths off of the three leaders after a half-mile in :45.56. With a quuarter-mile to the f inish Chacalosa found a narrow openinng on the rail and took advantage of the opportunity too suddenly f ind herself in a f ight for the lead with a stubborn Purr Sea as Shez Reckless and Princedreamcess fell out of contention. Withh a furlong to run, Chacalosa began to draw clear and raced under thhe wire a length-and-a-half in front of Queens Up in second in a f inal time of 1:25.53. Purr Sea was another length-and-a-half back in third followed by Plus Chic, Wonderstrruck, Tone It Up, Princedreamcess, Shez Reckless and Upside Down. Chacalosa paid $75.20 on a $2 win ticket. Chacalosa was fourth to Plus Chic in her career debut going f ivve furlongs on the turf at Arlington on Aug. 1 but improved in a runner-up performance behind Dressed in an off-the-turf maiden special weight over a mile-and-one-sixteenth at Arlington on Aug. 18. Breaking from post one, Medina Spirit responded to an immediate

And you know [the othher speed horses] are going to try to get to the turn [in front],” Velazquez said on the air to TVG analyst Britney Eurton. “But I’m going for it to the turn. Our Flash Drive Keeps Win Streak Alive in Ontario Colleen Live Oak Plantation’s Our Flash Drive won her thhird consecutivve race and second straight graded stakes Aug. 22 at Woodbine as the 3-year-old Florida-bred f illy won the US$116,989 Ontario Colleen Stakes (Gradee 3) by a length-and-a-half against six other sophomore f illies going a mile on the tuurf. After two unsuccessful starts against special weightt maidens at Saratoga last year to begin her career, Our Flash Drive came back in June of this year to win a maiden special weight by thhree-and-threequarter lengthhs going seven furlongs on Woodbine’s Tapeta for trainer Marrkk Casse and jockey Patrick Husbands. She and Husbands then won the Grade 3 Selene Stakes at Woodbine on Julyy 10 going a mile-and-one-sixxteenth before taking the Ontario Colleen. Husbands returned to ride Our Flash Drivve in Ontario Colleen and used the same stalking strategy thhaat had been successful in Selene. After breaking from post two, Our Flash Drive sat a length-anda-half behind stablemate Sweet Souper Sweet, who led through easy quarter-mile splits of :24.42 and :48.35. Our Flash Drive began to pick up the pace and close thhe gap on Sweet Souper Sweet as they raced around the far turn and stuck a head in front after six furlongs in 1:11.84. She doesn’t like horses running withh her; she doesn’t like horses at all.” Our Flash Drive was bred by Live Oak Stud and now sports a record of three wins in f ive starts with earnings of $180,937. She is by Ghostzapper out of Dynamotoor, by Dynaformer and paid $6.90 to win. Our Flash Drive is thhe second foal from Dynamotor, who also produced Gearhead, a winning gelding by City Zip. time unable to beat Medina Spirit to the f irst turn and was forced to sit second and just to his outside as they negotiated the f ir irst quartermile in :22.52. Team Merchants was caught three-wide in third while The Great One and Willy the Cobbler pursued in fourth and f ifth. Medina Spirit throttled down into a more relaxed pace down the backkstretch while maintaining a half-length advantage on Rock Your World to his outside as Team Merchants chased from a length back in third through a half-mile split in :46.92. As they raced around the turn, Medina Spirit kept a short lead while racing on thhe rail but Rock Your World, Team Merchants and longshot Stilleto Boy all began their assaults on his outtside while The Great One got within range with an inside trip. It appeared for a moment that Medina Spirit was in jeopardy against the four-pronged attttackk but he suddenly quickened at the top of the stretch and was a length in front with an eighth of a mile to the f inish. Rock Your World remained determined through the f in inal fur-
long but Medina Spirit remained persistent and won by a length in 1:37.29 on the fast trrack. Rock Your World was second, two-and-aquarter lengths faster than Stilleto Boy in third. They were followed by Team Merchants and Willy the Cobbler. Medin ina Spirrit was sent to the post as the 4-5 favoritte and paid $3.80 to win. “[Running down the] backstretcch, [Mediinna Spirrit] threw his ears up and began to run very comfortable,” Velazquez continued. “Those othher horses came to him and he picked it up on his own so I didn’t have to ask him to do anything until the quarter pole when I said ‘okay buddy. We gottta go.’ I had to pat him a few times, but that’ss him. He’s a f ighter and he wanted to f ight that’s for sure. “I think we got a really good race out of him. I don’t think we got to the botttom of him because down the stretch, he just kinda waited and waited and the gallop out was really good. So I’m happy the way he did it. Bob had him ready for today obviously.” Baffert said he had concerns coming off of the three-and-a-half monthh layoff but felt Medina Spirit would produce another solid performance. “I was a little nervous today. I talked to [owner Amr Zedan] who asked me how he’s doing and I said ‘I think he’s doing really well,” Baffert said on TVG. “He looked great in thhe paddock and he’s starting to mature. “We were hoping for something like thhis. You never know off the layoff. I actually threw him in the deep end of the pool here but this horse really shows his class. “I brought him back and he had to run well—you know f irst or second and get somethinng out of it. But now he’s giving me options. I can go to [thhe Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby at Parx on Sept. 25] or wait and run him in the Awesome Again (G1) [at Santa Anita on Oct. 2]. But we know he likes thhis track and thhat is so important with the Breeders’ Cup coming here.” Medina Spirit is by Protonico and is out of Mongolian Changa, by Brilliant Speed and was bred in Florida by Gail Rice. He has now won half of his eight career races with three seconds and a third while earning $2,345,200. Amr Zedan purchhased Medina Spirit in the name of his Zedan Racing Stables at the 2020 OBS Open Sale in July out of the Whitman Sales consignment for $35,000. Christy Whitman purchased him at OBS as a yearling at the 2019 Winter Mixed Sale for a barrggainn $1,000. ■

fall short of Trust Our Journey by a neck as they completed the course in 1:02.80 on the f irm turf. It was thhree-and-a-quarter lengths back to Wish Me Home in third followed by Mr. Mox, Baytown Frostyy and Big Boss Ben. R Adios Jersey Stays Undefeated With Charles Town Oaks Score Averill Racing LLC and ATM Racing’s R Adios Jersey remained undefeated in f ive starts Aug. 27 at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races with a three-and-one-quarter-length victory in the $400,000 Charles Town Oaks (Grade 3). Sent to thhe post at 5-1 in the f ield of ten 3-year-old f illies competing at seven furlongs around two turns, R Adios Jer-sey and jockey Paco Lopez sprinnted to the lead from post eight and had a short lead on Goldf inch Stakes-winner Inject as they passed the f inish line for the f irst time. R Adios Jersey began to increase thhe pace down the backstrretch with a halfmile in :46.27 and continued to lead Caramel Swirl by a length going into thhe far turn as those two began to separate from Inject and the rest. Then Pauline’s Pearl, who won the Grade 3 Fantasy at Oaklawn in March, began to inch closer from mid-pack with a ground-saving trip around the tuurn and was on even terms with Caramel Swirl in second as they tried to catch the frontt-running R Adios Jersey turning for home. Pauline’s Pearl left Caramel Swirl at the eightthh-pole and tried to challenge, but R Adios Jersey hit another gear and extended her lead under a strong ride from Lopez. Racing under thhe wire, R Adios Jersey competed the course in 1:24.37 as Pauline’s Peearl f inished second, a lengthh and three-quarr--

BY BROCK SHERIDAN HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - LNJ Foxwoods’ Outfoxed dominated the $200,000 Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes Susan’s Girl Aug. 28 at Gulfstream Park while Arindel homebred Octane led from start to f inish to win thhe $200,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Aff irmed two races later at the Hallandale Beach oval. Outfoxed produced a record-setting effort with a commanding 13 1/2 –length victoryy ahead of runner-up Devilette. The Susan’s Girrl featured 11 2-year-old f illies by FTBOA registered Florida stallions going seven furlongs on the fast track and is the second leg of the thhree-race series that began July 31 with the $100,000 Florida Sire Stakes Desert Vixen at six furlongs. The f illy division of the series concluded Sept. 25 with the $400,000 Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl at a mile-and-one-sixteenth.
Outfoxed ‘Em All The winning margin was the largest in the 40-year-history of the Susan’s Girl, eclipsing the 10-length victory by Ivanavinalot inn 2002. Conditioned by Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mottt and riddeen by Edgard Zayas, Outfoxed was sent to the post as the 7-5 favorite after shipping to Gulfstream from Saratoga where she was thhird behind winner Echo Zulu in her f irst career start going f iv ive-and-a-half furlongs on July 15. Dear Mama Mia broke best of all from post 11 in the Susan’s Girl and was quickly joined by Devilettte from post eight as Outfoxed was in no hurry early from post seven. Recent maiden special weight-winnner Devilettte sprinted to thhe lead down the backstretch and was a length in front of Noble Dreamer in second as they f inished the f irst quarter-mile in a hand-timed :23.06. Devilettte took thhem into the turn as Noble Dreamer edged closer in second while Outfoxed began to make a big run while racing f ive-wide. Midway on the turn, Outfoxed was able to maneuver into the three patthh and took the lead with f ive-sixteenths of a mile to the f inish. Devilette remained in second but was no match for Outfoxed, who was suddenly f ive lengths in front with a furlong to run while continuing to pull away with every stride. Outfoxed f inished in 1:23.81 on thhe fast track with Devilette anothher 13 ½ lengths ahead of Desert Vixen-winner My Sassenach in third. They were followed in order by Sequuin Lady, Veiled Prophet, Noble Dreamer, Demurelyy, Spectacular Gal, Dear Mama Mia, Rachel’s Rock and Lluvvia. Outfoxed returned $4.80 on a $2 win ticket. “She broke good out of the gate. She dropped back a little bit. There was plenttyy of pace. A seven-furlong race can be very hard on 2-yearr--old f illies, so I let her sit a little,” Zayas said. “At the half-mile [pole], I didn’t want to go too wide, so I tuucked her in a little bit. After that she was taking me very nice. She was very impressive. Continued on next page THE FLORIDA HORSE • OCTOBER 2021
