THOROUGHBRED TRAINING CENTERS OF FLORIDA
Welcome to the Florida Thoroughbred Training Centers guidebook published by Florida Equine Communications on behalf of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ & Owners’ Association.
When it comes to developing world class Thoroughbred athletes, Ocala/Marion County, Florida has a well-earned reputation as the premier location in the country thanks to its optimal climate, mineral-rich limestone soil, vast acreage, unparalleled concentration of equine expertise and investment opportunities. Horse Capital of the World® is more than a trademark to those who ply their trade at Ocala/Marion County’s training centers. The area is also home to the world’s leading 2-year-olds in training auction house, Ocala Breeders’ Sales, where 74% of the world’s race-ready juveniles pass through annually in front of buyers from more than 44 countries and almost every state.
Florida is home to two world class racetracks, Tampa Bay Downs and Gulfstream Park. Several renowned training centers of champions reside in the West Palm Beach area.
From Kentucky Derby winners to Breeders’ Cup victors and national Eclipse award-winning champions, the horses trained in Florida consistently rise to the pinnacle of the sport.
We hope your introduction to our training centers is only the beginning as you come to know Florida’s far-reaching impact on the national Thoroughbred industry and learn about the state’s unprecedented incentives for breeding, stallions, racehorse ownership, the lucrative Florida Sire Stakes and enhanced purses at Florida racetracks. Additionally, the state’s pro-business stance means no state income tax and a myriad of industry tax incentives, making Florida a prime location for investment.

CCENTRAL FLORIDA’S WINNING RACEHORSE FORMULA
For a young Thoroughbred prospect embarking on a racing career, there’s no better place to begin than at one of Florida’s bustling training centers. Located in the heart of Central Florida, Ocala/Marion County, trademarked the Horse Capital of the World® in 1997, is home to a thriving community of Thoroughbred training centers, a world-class Thoroughbred auction house and numerous breeding operations.
Ocala offers the ideal conditions for nurturing young racehorses. Coupled with a deep-rooted culture of horsemanship and a network of well-respected professionals, the equine haven stands tall as a premier location for schooling the Thoroughbred industry’s stars of tomorrow.
The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company is a pioneer in the concept of selling 2-year-olds in training and the worldwide leader with 74% of the race ready juvenile market. OBS annually attracts buyers from 44 countries and nearly every state in March, April and June. More than 75% of the nation’s 2-year-old crop passes through the state at some point for early training, sales or racing, along with foals dropped in the state to become Florida-breds. Overall, equines number 75,000 in the county with half being Thoroughbreds.
Marion County is a magnet for top trainers, attracting many of the industry’s best who sought out the area to practice their craft.
“Ocala has always been a place to train your horse in the wintertime,” Donato Lanni, a prominent buyer of two-year-olds said. “Over the years, it’s become a place that has seen a lot of good horsemen migrate to from all over. And that’s because Ocala is the capital of 2-year-olds, whether you are readying to
race or to go to a sale. There are so many good horsemen and women in Ocala, and so many of them do a great job. And it’s hard to do, too. It’s not easy what they do. It’s a lot of work and it requires keen horsemanship.”
THE BEST START
Central Florida’s natural amenities, coupled with mild winters and warm, sunny days, provide an optimal environment for yearround training, reducing weather-related interruptions. Ocala’s lush pastures and ample open spaces allow for plenty of turnout time, which is crucial for the physical and mental well-being of young horses.
“Most of Ocala’s training centers have enough paddocks to turn horses out and they’ve got great racetracks,” Lanni said. “There are tracks everywhere. When you fly over Ocala, you look down and it’s just amazing the number of racetracks you see in the area. The turnout time [the horses] get in Ocala is important for their development and growth.”
All horses instinctively know how to run, but teaching future racehorses the many essential skills needed to become productive athletes is an art form. They must learn to stand in and leave the starting gate, ration their speed and to change leads on command during a race. Routine jogs and gallops during morning training sessions help condition these equine athletes in the early stages of development. As conditioning improves, the
exercise regimen gradually intensifies until horses are ready to breeze at a stronger pace for the stopwatch.
SILVERLEAF HILLS TRAINING CENTER
Veteran trainer Kenny McPeek has been coming to Ocala since he was 12 years old. He acquired his Silverleaf Hills Training Center in Summerfield in 2019. Among the key team members at Silverleaf Hills is lead assistant trainer Dominic Brennan.
“My first Kentucky Derby horse, Tejano Run, runner-up in the 1995 Derby, was trained in Ocala,” McPeek shared. “In general, Ocala has the weather, the ground and the consolidation of good horsemen. Ocala has surpassed Camden and Aiken, South Carolina, where a lot of the horses used to go to train. But now, most of the horses go to Ocala.”
Prior to his 2019 purchase, he had horses at training centers across the state. Consolidation to Ocala just made sense. As his yearlings grow into 2-year-olds, they are transferred to Silverleaf Hills to be saddle-broken, started under tack and trained to use the starting gate.
This year’s G1 Kentucky Derby winner and Grade 1 Preakness
Stakes runner-up Mystik Dan and Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks and Grade 1 Acorn winner Thorpedo Anna, both trained by McPeek, received their early training at Silverleaf Hills before proving themselves amongst the finest of their crop.
“Having the training center has taken our program to another
level,” McPeek said. “It’s been great. We’re proud to be part of the Ocala/Marion County community.”
CASSE RACING TRAINING CENTER
Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse owns and operates Casse Racing Training Center in Ocala. Casse, who has lived in Ocala for more than 50 years and managed Harry T. Mangurian’s historic Mockingbird Farm early in his career, is one of North America’s leading trainers. His training exploits, which include Classic winners and Breeders’ Cup champions, earned him an induction in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2020 and Canadian Horse racing Hall of Fame 2016. Few, if any, know Ocala as well as Casse, who has witnessed Marion County’s growth first-hand over the last half-century.
“There are a lot of things that make Ocala what it is,” said Casse, who estimates that he trains between 75 and 100 head at his training center each season. “In the beginning, I think most people came here for the weather. You’re able to train year-round here unlike our Northern friends. We don’t have that type of restriction, which is great. And look at great golfers and other great athletes. There are so many great athletes that come out of the South. A lot of it has to do with the climate and being able to avoid brutal weather. Ice and snow can hinder training.
“What happened with the concentration of all these farms, training centers and all these horses is that great veterinarian
hospitals came to the area, some of the best veterinarian hospitals anywhere in the world,” Casse continued. “[Veterinary care] is always a concern when you’re dealing with living animals. There are a million things that can go wrong. That’s a key factor, too.
“And OBS has become the premier place for 2-year-old sales in the world, which also brings horses here. A lot of times, horses that are bought at OBS are left here in Ocala to continue their training. Plus, we have a wonderful racing program in South Florida and in Tampa. Horsemen from all over absolutely recognize Ocala’s importance to the industry. It’s a great place to live, and it’s a great place to train horses.”
BRIDLEWOOD FARM
John and Leslie Malone’s Bridlewood Farm boasts a bevy of Grade 1-winning training graduates. Among them is back-to-back Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile G1 winner and Eclipse Champion Horse of the Year Cody’s Wish. Founded by Arthur and Martha Appleton in 1976 and under the ownership of the Malones since 2013, the operation completely revitalized their training program to have world-class amenities second to none.
“And, more importantly, [we] let our equine graduates and our team be our best form of advertising and rebranding the new and improved Bridlewood,” longtime general manager George Isaacs said.
“It’s our job to nurture a horse’s natural athletic ability properly,” Isaacs said. “Key advantages for our program are the perfect soil profile and an abundance of sunshine, so we’re able to train all winter long. Because we train horses for a very exclusive clientele, our success is only as good as their success. They’re competing at the highest level and winning big races all over the globe. Our Thoroughbred training graduates represent that very high level of success.”
Farm trainer Joan “Meda” Murphy, said, “I love the challenge of working with juvenile horses. They are all different and I enjoy implementing an individual training program for them to develop organically to their full potential. There is a lot of pride and satisfaction for our team to watch a young horse thrive on the farm and go on to the racetrack to become a winner or top racehorse.”
OCALA STUD
The O’Farrell family’s historic Ocala Stud, started by Joe O’Farrell and partners in the mid-1950s, has churned out winners at the top level of the industry since selling its first crop of 2-year-olds in 1958. Rich in heritage, Ocala Stud was the first farm outside of Kentucky to land on the national lists of leading breeders and owners. Many of racing’s top horses learned their early lessons over Ocala Stud’s famed training track.
“Number one, we have the climate. Our weather is conducive to training during the core months of starting yearlings early in their training careers,” Ocala Stud’s David O’Farrell said. “From late fall through the wintertime, we’re able to train horses daily and get them out of their stalls. With young horses, it’s imperative that they get outside and train every day. We might get one odd, bad weather day, but we don’t get week-long snowstorms. We might miss one day of training, but we don’t miss consecutive days. And that’s very important, especially for young horses to be in a regular routine.
“Then Ocala attracted quality people who have honed their trade over the years,” O’Farrell continued. “We have world-class horsemen that know what they are doing. With that, it has brought the infrastructure that has helped support it. Not only do we have unbelievable horsemen in the way of trainers, but we also have top veterinarians, leading vet clinics, farriers, and
so on that are very specialized. Now, we have all the available resources needed to produce top-class racehorses.”
“It’s super gratifying for us,” O’Farrell shared. “It’s something we live for. We train horses of our own, but we train a lot of horses for other people. It’s very rewarding when you have a program that can produce champions back-to-back. It’s something we all dream about and get up every day hoping to achieve.”
HORSEOLOGY
Trainer Jena Antonucci made headlines in 2023, sending out Arcangelo to win the G1 Belmont Stakes. In the process, she became the first woman to train a Belmont winner in the race’s 155-year history, the first female trainer to win any of the historic Triple Crown races. Based in Ocala, Antonucci owns and operates HorseOlogy with Katie Miranda. The operation, established in 2022 and located at Paul Bulmahn’s GoldMark Farm, offers training in addition to a host of other services.
“Katie and I were looking to merge and expand what we each were doing,” Antonucci said, “We call it a conception-toretirement operation. We handle everything related to raising, training, and racing Thoroughbreds.”
By Michael Compton
“We take pride in being a public training program with a private feel.”
BRIDLEWOOD FARM B
With more than 2,200 acres Bridlewood Farm was founded in 1976 by Arthur and Martha Appleton. Under the direction of general manager George Isaacs, they represent more than 100 stakes winners including Grade 1 winners such as Florida champions Jolie’s Halo, Wild Event, Forbidden Apple, Southern Image, and David Junior, along with countless equine millionaires.
In 2013, John and Leslie Malone continued the tradition with Grade 1 winners Moonshine Memories and Tapwrit, in partnership, and have added to facilities and services to provide quality and excellence.

EEDDIE WOODS
At least five times in the past 15 years, Eddie Woods consignments were responsible for producing the most graded stakes winners purchased at 2-year-old sales. It’s Woods’ belief that you can’t make a horse run any faster than it’s capable of running. The horse either has the ability, or it doesn’t. The goal is trying to get a horse ready to perform to its maximum potential. The horse should be ready to perform at that level when it reaches the track.
“I never envisioned owning my own training facility. This is a dream come true.”
EI’ll Have Another
EISAMAN EQUINE
Dr. Barry and his wife Shari Eisaman came to Ocala in 1982 and have 420 acres of Central Florida’s fertile and tradition-rich training grounds near Williston.
For more than 30 years, they have worked with the Thoroughbred athlete for many of America’s leading owners, trainers and racing syndicates. They have produced more than 75 Grade 1 winning graduates including Kentucky Oaks, Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes and Breeders’ Cup winners, more than 275 stakes winners overall and 59 stakes winners in 2023. Reigning Florida Horse of the Year Speed Boat Beach is among the many Florida-breds that the farm schooled.
“You build a racehorse little by little.”

OBS TRAINING CENTER O
In 2007, Ocala Breeder Sales converted its training track from dirt to the allweather synthetic Safetrack surface, made of blended multi-washed fine silica sand with synthetic fibers, rubber chips and a coating of wax to give a cushioned, yet stable surface.
Since then, the surface has proven durable, consistent and has a key ability to Florida’s summer rainstorms and withstand tropical heat.
Like other synthetic tracks, horses bound across the gentle surface.
According to the manufacturer, the surface has reduced kickback and has excellent shock absorbing properties. The fibers create a ‘root structure’ replicating a good turf course, giving maximum stability.
“Surface gets high marks.”
O OCALA STUD
Given as a gift from Hall of Fame trainer Carl Nafzger, a small sign dangles near the quarter pole on the Ocala Stud training track rail that reads ‘Dreamer’s Point.’ He was standing there in 1990 when he foresaw Unbridled winning the Kentucky Derby. Also trained at Ocala Stud Florida-bred Carry Back (1961) and Street Sense (2007) bookend Unbridled with their Derby wins.
Founded in 1956, the oldest active Thoroughbred farm in the state, under three generations of the O’Farrell family, has bred and sold more than 155 stakes winners, most by Ocala Stud sires, including Horse of the Year Roman Brother and four divisional champions. Since 2000, more than 50 horses bred by Ocala Stud have earned at least $200,000; 27 have earned at least $300,000; and 17 have earned more than $600,000 at the racetrack.
“Horses come and go, but the relationships you have with people are really what get you through life.”

major Thoroughbred training center expands and diversifies the equestrian industry.”
Near Boynton Beach in South Florida, the center was a brainchild of Frank Stronach, prominent breeder, racehorse owner and former track owner. Trainers who use the facility enjoy the peacefulness of the location and its top-notch amenities.
Built in 2002, the track generates $50 million in economic impact and more than 2,000 total jobs for the county.
