Edrick and Cadence have a short, yet special history together. In the summer of 2010, Edrick won her first Grand Prix ever – the $75,000 HITS Grand Prix at HITS-on-theHudson – aboard the 11-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding that Emil Spadone had found for her in Europe not long before. With more than $46,000 and several top finishes together, the duo qualified for and competed in the 2010 Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix, finishing just out of the ribbons in 21st place. In 2011, they took some time off, but have come back strong to win five Grand Prix together in the last four months. “She’s not really the bragging type, so I’ll tell you that she was terrific this week,” said Don Stewart of Don Stewart Stables in Ocala (Edrick’s employer for the past five years). “They finished second in Thursday’s Grand Prix and that horse hasn’t dropped a rail all week. I told Megan this was a perfect engagement present to herself!” Portugal’s Bernardo Cabral set a challenging course for Sunday’s feature class. Edrick and Cadence were seventh in the order and the first to post a fault-free round. Two trips later, Ragan Roberts of Little Rock, Ark., rode Quipit Group’s Quipit L.F. to a clean round and joined Edrick for the jump-off. Cabral’s 6a-b combination and triple combination at fence 9 seemed to be the source of trouble for several riders, but in addition to Edrick and Roberts, six others rose to the challenge and advanced to the jump-off. “In the triple combination in the first round, the one coming in rode nice, but the two got kind of tight,” said Edrick. “The stick to the two to the one was definitely the most challenging. The course was comfortable and the last line, a four-stride away from the in-gate, was surprisingly nice. Actually, the whole course was really smooth and rode like an equitation course, which is a good thing since that’s our focus at Don Stewart Stables.” Edrick was up first in the jump-off and wasted no time. She and Cadence maneuvered the track with ease and set the Great American Time to Beat at 45.44 seconds. The only other rider to go double clear was Derek Petersen of Archer, Fla., aboard his own Via Dolorosa. Petersen and
his ride finished three-tenths of a second behind Edrick in 45.77 seconds to capture the red ribbon. After the class, Edrick was beaming. “It was a great week for me. I got engaged and won my first GP of the year here. I don’t think I can top that! I can’t thank my support team enough. Emil Spadone and Don Stewart are so amazing. I’m lucky to have their support and couldn’t have done this without them,” she said. “I’ll be here for the rest of the circuit, and with their help my goal is qualify again for the Pfizer Million.” Edrick and Wexler, who met at HITS Culpeper, have yet to set the date for their big day but hope to do so soon.

“My mother is coming in this week, so hopefully we can pick a date soon.” Rounding out the top five in the class were Callan Solem of Glenmoore, Pa., and HorseshoeTrail Farm, Inc.’s Magic Cruise in third place, Patty Stovel of Chester Springs, Pa., and her own Carigor Z in fourth and Roberts and Quipit L.F. in fifth. A Perfect Start Reigning Pfizer Million Champion Andre Thieme returns to HITS Ocala to win the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix ndre Thieme began his 2012 Winter Circuit at HITS Ocala on Feb. 9 with a lot to defend. The 2011 Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix winner got his 2012 qualifying efforts off to a perfect start with a win in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, at HITS Post Time Farm with his own Cesar. With one Grand Prix and $7,500 in the bank, Germany’s own Thieme is on his way to becoming eligible for the 2012 Pfizer Million. He topped the 18 pairs who tested Tim Hott’s course, which boasted two challenging double combinations to allow only four clear efforts. Megan Edrick of Agoura, Calif., Hasbrouck Donovan of Gainesville, Fla., and Harold Chopping of Southern Pines, N.C., joined Thieme in the second round to face six remaining obstacles.

Edrick and Procedures, Inc.’s Cadence posted the first clear round in the jump-off and set the Great American Time To Beat at 36 seconds. Thieme was last to go in the second round and was in it to win it with tight turns and time to spare. He and Cesar posted a winning time of 35.28 seconds to bump Edrick to second place. “I’m really happy about this win,” said Thieme. “The first round felt good, but he [Cesar] got a little flat in the end of the jump-off because she [Edrick] was really fast and I really had to go for it.” The fastest of the two four-fault rounds in the jump-off was Donovan in the irons of DerbyPie, LLC’s Delilah. The pair maneuvered the course in 37.65 seconds to finish in third over Chopping aboard Penelope Strait & Jenna Hoy’s Little Glen’s Valentino, who posted a time of 42.09. Derek Petersen of Archer, Fla., dropped a rail at the third fence in the first round to keep him out of the jump-off and land him and his own Via Dolorosa in fifth place.

He and Robin Hughes’ Living Color took one giant stride towards September’s Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final with a win in the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix at HITS Post Time Farm. Living Color – standing at 18 hands tall – carried Geitner to a high score of 87 in the first round and duplicated that score in the second round for an overall score of 174. Aside from beating out 57 competitors, Geitner also piloted Living Color to a High-Performance Hunter Championship this week at HITS Ocala. “This course was really nice. Sometimes it’s hard for him [Living Color] to navigate the smaller rings, but he handled it well,” said Geitner, who hails from Aiken, S.C. “He is handy for a big horse, has a great temperament and Robin [Hughes] takes it slow with him, so he is ready for just about anything.” Geitner was joined in the second round by the top 11 pairs. Of these, Greg Crolick of Auburn Hills, Mich., boasted the top score of 88 in the irons of Clover Lane Farm, LLC’s Imagine. His overall score of 172.5, however, was not enough to catch Geitner and he finished with the red ribbon. Completing the top three was Mary Lisa Leffler of Brookeville, Md., with a final score of 170.75 aboard Rolling Acres’ Gerona 92.

But the bill ultimately passed by Congress did not extend the Section 179 expense deduction or 100 percent bonus depreciation at the 2011 levels. Both provisions have returned to prior lower levels.
Section 179 Expense Deduction The expense deduction has returned to $125,000 for 2012 and phases out dollar-fordollar once purchases of depreciable property reach $500,000. The 179 expense deduction applies to horses, farm equipment and other depreciable property used in a business and permits a horse owner or breeder to write-off up to $125,000 in assets purchased and placed in service in one’s horse business in 2012. The expense allowance for 2010-2011 was $500,000 and phased out after purchases exceeded $2 million. Bonus Depreciation In addition, bonus depreciation has returned to 50 percent for 2012. Bonus depreciation allows horse owners and other horse businesses
American Horse Council’s 2012 Immigration
Reform Outlook espite substantial efforts to recruit and train U.S. workers, horse farms, ranches, horse shows, trainers and others must rely on foreign workers and use both the H-2B and H-2A temporary foreign worker programs to meet their labor needs. For this reason immigration polices have a profound impact on the horse industry. In 2011 numerous bills were introduced in the 112th Congress concerning immigration, most enforcement oriented. Most notably, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Lamar Smith (R-TX) introduced the Legal Workforce Act (H.R.2885), which would require all employers to use the federal E-verify system to make sure their workers are authorized to work. The House Judiciary Committee held hearings on this bill and reported it out of committee on Sept. 21. “In the Summer and Fall we saw a lot of action in Congress on immigration. Committees in both the House and Senate held numerous hearings and the House Judiciary Committee approved a mandatory E-verify bill. Since then however, there has been little movement on the issue because even Members of Congress who are in favor of beefing up enforcement and passing mandatory E-verify can’t agree on the best way to proceed,” said AHC Legislative Director Ben Pendergrass.

In response to concerns that mandatory Everify would cripple the U.S. agricultural industry, several bills, such as the American Specialty Agriculture Act (H.R.2847) and the Legal Agricultural Workforce Act (H.R.2895), were introduced. These bills would create new, less burdensome temporary foreign agricultural worker programs to replace the current H-2A program. However, no consensus emerged on which of the many proposals on the table would best accommodate the needs of agriculture. “It is absolutely vital for the horse industry to have access to functioning, efficient, and cost effective foreign temporary worker programs to meet its labor needs and the horse industry can not support any bill unless it provides for those needs,” said AHC President Jay Hickey. “We would like Congress to reform our system in a comprehensive way. However, as we enter another election year it is unlikely Congress will have much of a desire to deal with a hot-button issue like immigration.” “It is likely more immigration bills will be introduced in 2012 and there maybe action taken on specific issues like the H-2B wage rule, but right now it doesn’t look like Congress will take action on major legislation like mandatory E-verify,” said Pendergrass.
to write off 50 percent of the cost of “new” capital assets, including horses, when purchased and placed in service in 2012. To be eligible for bonus depreciation the original use of the property must commence with the taxpayer. Any prior use makes the property ineligible. Bonus depreciation was 100 percent for eligible assets purchased and placed in service from Sept. 8, 2010 through 2011. Both provisions can be used together. Retroactive Change is Possible “It is possible that the higher levels could be reinstated retroactively to Jan. 1, 2012. In fact, the House-passed payroll-tax bill extended 100 percent bonus depreciation through 2012, even though the Senate bill did not,” said AHC president Jay Hickey. “The negotiations between now and the end of February on the one-year extension of the payroll tax reduction could include other changes to the tax code, such as the expense deduction or bonus depreciation. But this is speculation at this point.”

Laura and Troy Linback Recovering From Injuries Sustained in Auto Collision
FILE PHOTO
HITS regular Laura Linback, of Mundelin, Ill., is back in her britches after a week of recuperating from the head-on collision she and husband Troy Linback were in on Feb. 8. The pair were on their way home from Laura’s birthday Laura Linback dinner, heading west on Hwy. 27. Near the intersection of Hwy. 27 and Hwy. 326 in Ocala, they butted heads with a vehicle that was headed east – in the westbound lane. “The car in front of us swerved into the median and then I saw the headlights,” said Troy, who was driving their family sedan at the time of the accident.
Laura and Troy were both taken to the hospital after the accident. Laura was released from the hospital the same night with bumps and bruises and a broken rib. Troy’s injuries were more extensive – he required surgery the night of the collision. He broke his ankle and shattered the kneecap on the same leg, and severely damaged the tendons and ligaments around the kneecap. He was released from the the hospital on the Sunday following the accident. Troy said his leg will be immobilized in a cast for six weeks, after which the doctors will determine whether he needs more surgery or can go straight into physical therapy. “The doctors wouldn’t really give me a time, but I think it’ll be at least six months before I can walk again,”
said Troy, who is tooling around pretty well with the help of a walker and his friends and family. “We’re doing really well,” Laura said. “Everybody has been so nice and supportive and kind – it’s been great.” Exactly one week after the accident, Laura got back to riding, despite some lingering soreness, and was planning to enter for classes again starting on Thursday in the Level 6 Jumpers. “I’m not going to start off with a Grand Prix,” she said, smiling.“I feel much better today. I’d like to press on as hard as possible, but we’re taking it day by day.” Linback plans to be competing for the entire HITS Ocala circuit, based out of the farm they bought last year, which is located right behind HITS Post Time Farm. www.horsecapitaldigest.com 23

iment to wash into the aquifer during any typical Florida storm. Planting additional ground cover around the sacrifice paddock can do a great job in helping to alleviate potential runoff; grass, trees and shrubs, or any vegetation should be acceptable. It’s just important to help keep the loose dirt and footing in the paddock so it won’t all be washed away, leaving the farm with a mess and an unusable area that may end up being expensive and difficult to fix. Planting native plants is highly recommended because they will do the best job for the farm. Not only are they already acclimated to Florida’s climate, they often tend to be drought-tolerant, important during the long, dry periods. Native
Horses are often confined in sacrifice areas due to situations such as: allowing limited grazing for the health of the animal, saving pasture grass, or because the horse is recovering from an injury, and requires rest and limited turnout. plants also resist Florida’s pests, further helping to reduce any additional fertilizer and/or pesticide requirements. And an added bonus of the newly added trees, shrubs and plants is that it may promote native birds by providing a source of food, cover and a nesting ground for young. Your neighbors will also thank you for not creating lots of runoff onto their farms. Once the sacrifice area is ready, it can be easily maintained and be kept fresh by picking manure regularly out of the paddock. Frequent dragging and/or rolling will also help to maintain the paddock’s footing. Installing a hay bin, (which should be moved around often) allows horses to eat off of the sand and to mimic a natural pattern of the animals often nibbling small meals. Go ahead and try a sacrifice paddock on your farm. The grass, horses and water will thank you. As always, keep up the good management practices!

ecently, I visited a lovely farm that utilized a “sacrifice paddock.” This is a small, fenced-in part of the farm that is heavily used, causing it to become bare, thus allowing the rest of the farm to maintain good grass. I have come across other farms utilizing a similar area and, although it is not often discussed, a sacrifice paddock can be beneficial to the horse, the farm and the environment. Horses are often confined in sacrifice areas due to situations such as: allowing limited grazing for the health of the animal, saving pasture grass, or because the horse is recovering from an injury, and requires rest and limited turnout. This paddock can also be beneficial for badfooted horses that need to be kept off the morning dew. Often times, roofed but open structures (usually called loafing pens) are also built in the sacrifice area, allowing for cover from the harsh sun and/or rain. Regardless of the reason, the sacrifice area can actually be the “greenest” part of the farm, if managed properly. So if an interest in setting up a pasture well suited for this purpose arises, first determine the lay of the farm’s land. The area should be kept far from any natural water bodies and placed in a high, dry location. As any remaining grass will be eliminated quickly because of excessive wear and grazing, if the pocketbook allows, mixing in additional footing, like old, recycled and shredded rubber, or some other material is a good consideration. However, if this is not a possibility, there shouldn’t be any serious repercussions because Florida gets only limited amounts of “mud.” Still, careful management will be essential to eliminating a big mess and creating future excessive runoff. If composting is done on-site, the composted material can also be used to mix in with the soil. Adding compost will help take up water and stop some unwanted drainage and erosion. If the sacrifice paddock will be near the barn, be sure that any rain gutters or roof runoff doesn’t drain directly onto the bare ground because the rain will be definitely cause erosion and sed-
