Rodriguez Andres Rodriguez picks up his second victory of the week in $50,000 HITS Grand Prix at HITS Ocala Course Designer Martin Otto of Munster, Germany. Reigning Pfizer Million champion Andre Thieme of Plau Am See, Germany, and his own Quonschbob were first to show and posted a beautiful round leaving all the fences intact. To the crowd’s disappointment, they suffered one time fault which kept them from advancing to the jump-off. Sunday’s difficulty was far greater than Thursday’s course, which saw 17 clear rounds. On Sunday, Otto challenged the riders significantly in the final stretches of the course, designing a test of endurance which many riders failed to conquer. At the end of the first round, eight horse-and-rider teams advanced to the jump-off. A couple of trips in, Patty Stovel of Chester Springs, Pa., aboard her own Carigor Z and Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas, aboard MTM Farm’s MTM Timon, got things rolling when they each posted back-to-back clear rounds to ensure a jump-off. The completion of the first round added five more riders to the jump-off roster, setting the stage for an exciting second round: Sharn Wordley of Ocala aboard his own Corino; Hector Florentino of Wellington, Fla., aboard Stransky’s Mission Farm LTD’s Ultimo; Katherine Frame Dewar aboard her own Spitfire-W; Jordan Coyne of New Port Richey, Fla., aboard her own Lazaro; and Aaron Vale of Morriston, Fla., aboard Wodka L, owned by Thinkslikeahorse. Stovel and Carigor Z were the first to show in the jumpoff and easily set the Great American Time to Beat at 46.139 seconds with no faults. The duo ultimately finished in third place. The lead quickly changed hands as Fenney and MTM Timon shaved two seconds off the clock in 44.967 seconds with no faults. Fenney and MTM Timon have had a

enezuelan rider Andres Rodriguez had an unbelievable week at HITS Ocala. On Thursday, Feb. 16, he won the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, and came back three days later to take first again in Sunday’s $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. Both wins came aboard Caballito, owned by ARAO Enterprises, LLC. Rodriguez seems to have his sights locked on making it to this year’s Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix. Rodriguez, now of Wellington, Fla., was one of 37 competitors to navigate the course designed by International

Repeats tremendous season thus far with a win and several topplace finishes, week after week. Wordley and Corino were next to show and finished with four faults in 46.261 seconds after they dropped a rail on the second effort of the 10B-C combination. Florentino and Ultimo also had four jumping faults, in 44.997 seconds. The jump-off showed its difficulty as Dewar and SpitfireW had 16 faults on the field. Coyne and Lazaro followed and had an unintentional dismount at the in-and-out. Rodriguez and Caballito were second to last to show and went clear in 43.344 seconds to take the lead from Fenney. “Tracy was in front of me and I knew Aaron was behind me,” said Rodriguez. “Tracy is so fast and I knew Aaron was another fast one. Even though my time was better than Tracy’s, I knew Aaron could get the job done, so I really didn’t know I won it until the last horse left the ring.” Vale and Wodka L. had the coveted last-to-show opportunity and blazed through the jump-off, eager to catch

lead time. Their time was impressive; however, the very last fence came down in 43.621 seconds in a heartbreaking finale. As the fastest of the four faulters, the team finished the day in fourth place. Thanks to Rodriguez’s impressive performance this week

Rodriguez and Caballito also won the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health on Feb. 16 at HITS Post Time Farm in Ocala to kick off a weekend of action-packed show jumping. High-Performance riders were out in full force as International Course Designer Martin Otto made his debut designing courses in the Grand Prix field at HITS Ocala. Rodriguez was one of 16 to make it to the jump-off from the original 39 horse-and-rider combinations. “The course was friendly,” he said. “Everyone wants to see a jump-off with people going as fast as they can and I’m glad there was a jump-off that the crowd could get into, because that’s what makes this sport exciting.” Third to go in the first round, Daniel Damen of Ocala and Fox Meadow Farm’s Cosmo started off the chain reaction of clear rounds, which also included: Harold Chopping of Southern Pines, N.C., and Little Glen’s Valentino, owned by Penelope Straight and Jenna Hoy; Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas, and MTM Farm’s MTM Timon; Isabelle LaPierre of Breakeyville, Quebec and La Chaudiere Farm’s Vicki Vale; Sharn Wordley of Ocala and his own Corino; Aaron Vale of Morriston, Fla., and Wodka L., owned by Thinkslikeahorse; Denise Wilson of Dousman, Wis., and Witchfire, owned by Blue Gate Farm, LLC; Brandie Holloway of Topeka, Kans., and Any Given Sunday, owned by Hays Investment Corp.; Damen aboard his second mount All Star, owned by Chuck and Dana Waters; Hector Florentino of Wellington aboard Stransky’s Mission’s Ultimo; Derek Petersen of Archer, Fla., and his own Vio Dolorosa; Fenney aboard her second mount, MTM Farm’s MTM Centano; Alex Granato of Elizabeth, Colo., aboard Augustin Walch’s Calypso W; Bryn Sadler of Sante Fe, N.M., and Bon Giorno, owned by Showcase 81, LLC; and Hugh Graham of Reddick, Fla., aboard King Ridge Stables’ Distant Star 3E. In the jump-off, Damen and Cosmo quickly set the Great American Time to Beat at 35.48 seconds. They would be the first of five to go double clear out of the substantial jumpoff roster. Two trips later, Fenney and MTM Timon returned and quickly took the lead away from Damen in a blazing fast 31.44 seconds. Fenney’s time held up for only so long, as Rodriguez took the lead six trips later when he and Caballito blazed through the track and crossed the timers in 31.41 seconds, just a hair faster than Fenney. “I saw her [Fenney’s] round and she was so fast,” said Rodriguez. “I knew I could get second, but I really wanted to win it! I watched Tracy go and [in regard to the final fence] I knew there was not enough space to get straight to that last jump, so I just did the turn and hit the distance. Sometimes you need a little luck.”

With seven more trips left in the jump-off, the crowd eagerly waited to see if any of the remaining challengers would top the new pace set by Rodriguez. Petersen was the next rider to put up a clean round and it looked as though he was on pace to catch Rodriguez, but when he crossed the timers in 31.55 seconds the moan of the crowd told him that he didn’t quite have it. Looking to take back the lead, Fenney entered the ring next on her second mount, MTM Centano and they had the pace beat, but at the second-to-last fence they dropped a rail and finished with four jumping faults in 30.75 seconds. In the end, Fenney finished second aboard MTM Timon and sixth aboard MTM Centano, while Petersen landed in third place. Out of the 16 pairs that advanced to the jump-off, LaPierre and Vicki Vale were the only others to go double clear. They finished fifth with a time of 36.74 seconds behind Damen and Cosmo.

The Devoucoux Hunter Prix is offered each Sunday at HITS Ocala and is a qualifier for America’s richest hunter class, the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final, which will take place September 7-9, alongside the $250,000 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix Final and the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix as part of HITS Championship Weekend.

CAROLINE SYKES CAPTURES THE $1,500 HITS 3’ HUNTER PRIX

I really hope to go there and win it. “[Today’s] course was really nice to ride. This is a young horse I’m riding, and if I still have him by the time the $500,000 class comes around, I’d like to ride him. He is 7 years old and owned by Emil Spadone and Sandy Lobel. I’ve had him for three years and we’ve worked hard to get where we are and, hopefully, we’ll be together at the $500,000.” Rounding out the top five ribbons were Debbie McCarthy

The $1,500 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix took place on Feb. 18 as Caroline Sykes of Garrison, N.Y., captured the blue ribbon aboard Violet Fludzinski’s Aston Martin. Saturday’s class was the biggest starting field to date in a qualifier for the newly minted $250,000 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix Final with 42 eager competitors from the Junior and Amateur ranks. “This is a really fun class to compete in,” said Sykes. “It’s a very competitive group of riders at this level and I think it certainly makes us feel special to have an event to look forward to.” Sykes is eager to qualify for the $250,000 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix Final at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, N.Y., Sept. 7-9. “My family and I always enjoy showing in Saugerties and it would be great to be part of the [$250,000] Final this year,” Sykes said. Jodi Czaplick of Ocala, a consistent top place finisher each week, captured the second-place ribbon aboard her own Untold, and Sarah Keyser of Newton, Pa., took the third-place honors aboard her own Under Cover. ACHA Students to Visit HITS University of Florida to host this year’s American Collegiate Horsemen’s Association National Convention uture equine professionals from 12 of the country’s top land grant universities will attend this year’s American Collegiate Horsemen’s Association (ACHA) National Convention hosted by the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville. One of the first items on the event’s to-do list is to visit HITS Ocala on March 1 to watch the grand prix. Dr. Saundra TenBroeck, associate professor of UF’s Department of Animal Sciences organized the March 1-3 itinerary for the attending schools, and saw HITS as a perfect all-around opportunity. “For some of the students with a more Western background it will be their first time to witness a grand prix,” TenBroeck said. “All will gain a greater appreciation for hunter, jumper and dressage disciplines and will expand their equine experience. “Also, the staff at HITS does an amazing job of creating a venue that is both professional and family friendly. It’s well orchestrated, the facilities are excellent and the competitors amazing. The complexities that go along with putting on events of such magnitude across the country are somewhat mind boggling. So, from a management standpoint, there’s a lot our students can learn in a pretty short time from talking to and observing the management team of HITS,” she explained. Students will arrive at HITS Post Time Farm around noon and depart at 3 p.m. after speaking with HITS management and watching the competition. The three-day convention will allow students to network and socialize with members of the equine industry, take part in discussions on current events and share their love of horses. ACHA was formed to unify collegiate horsemen of all levels and disciplines through the promotion of leadership, education, service and national affiliations, according to TenBroeck. “As an industry, we have probably done a poor job of keeping the most important thing the most important thing. That is, focusing on the well-being of the horse and survival of the horse industry,” she said, highlighting the importance of unity within the industry. Holding the convention in a different location every year allows the students to see various aspects and opportunities of the horse industry up close, said TenBroeck. Most of the students attending from the 12 affiliated universities are in their junior or senior years and are work-

F

force-minded looking for internship and job opportunities. TenBroeck hopes that by introducing Marion County to the students, it will put the Horse Capital of the World high on the list of options. “We’re in one of the coolest places in the world when it comes to horses. And to not put it in Gainesville so we can tap into the amazing resources in Marion County, I think would have been malpractice,” she said. “Our focus is on horses and the horse industry, and where better, maybe in the country, to focus on the horse industry than in and around Marion County.” HCD

USHJA CEO Shelby French Starts Blog for Open Discussion with Members The new USHJA CEO Blog, French Speak, had a soft launch on Thursday, Feb. 9, but is now live and awaiting members arrival. “As your CEO, I think that you should get to know me, ask me questions or bring up issues that you feel need to be discussed and feel like you can share your opinions with me. Hence, I am now a blogger! I look forward to hearing from you.” Shelby French said. A major benefit of the electronic communication era is being more environmentally responsible and killing fewer trees. French noted, “Remember the good old days when every USEF member received the White Book

of proposed rule changes in the mail? Well that information is still available to all of us but instead of arriving very conveniently in our mail boxes, we now have to go online and access it ourselves. Those of us who loved having that paper booklet to mark up and make notes in, now have to print it for ourselves (still killing those trees). Electronic communication has made us more responsible for finding out what we need to know ourselves and that takes some getting used to, at least for those of us in my generation.” French is embracing this new electronic era and seeking ways to use it in a productive manner. The message to USHJA members, “I hope you will take the time to post to the blog or email or call me if you prefer. If I am in the office, I answer my own phone and I try to respond to every email within 24 hours, even if it is just to say that it might take me awhile to get back to you in detail. I won’t have all the answers to your questions or concerns but I will tell you what I know or ask another staff member to be a guest blogger if they can provide more insights than I can.” French welcomes your feedback and questions, this tool is exclusively for members and you will need your member number to register. Once registered select a user id and password, when posting comments and questions only the user id you have selected will be shown.

in 2012. To fill out a grant application, go to http://www.trusthorses.org/grant/request.html. The deadlines are May 7 and Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. ET. The targeted date for notifying grant recipients is within 60 days of due date. In 2011, the Trust’s board granted nearly $200,000 to 10 applicants. Past recipients of grants include those doing equine health research, land conservation, and educational programs. The Trust welcomes applications for need-based and means-tested worthy equine projects and encourages applicants to detail those in their applications. Funding available for grants includes approximately $70,000 reserved for Hunter and Jumper non-profit programs and activities in California and Nevada. Applicants for this fund should make clear their intention to apply

for funds available from this specific reserve. The Trust has an easy online application process, which includes a review page on which non-profits can both proof and edit their applications before submitting. All applicants must submit a proposed budget for their projects as word processing documents. Applications cannot be submitted without one. If you have any questions about applying, please e-mail grants@trusthorses.org. All grant applications MUST be submitted online or postmarked no later than May 7 and Oct. 8. No late applications will be considered. To learn more about USA Equestrian Trust and/or its grant program for equine nonprofits, visit the web site at http://www.trusthorses.org.
