Tracy Fenney celebrates her birthday with a first and second place finish in the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix
racy Fenney couldn’t have had a better week in Ocala to start off the rated circuit. After an impressive victory in Thursday’s $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix aboard MTM Farm’s MTM Timon, she celebrated her birthday on Sunday with a first and second place finish in the Feb. 5 $50,000 EMO Grand Prix, on MTM Farm’s MTM Centano and MTM Timon, respectively. “What a great week,” said Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas. “This is our first week back and I couldn’t have asked for a better start. Today’s weather was gorgeous, the horses are happy and winning on your birthday is always fun.” Fenney’s husband and Grand Prix veteran Mike McCormick was all smiles as he led MTM Timon in for a group photo. “We’re always happy to be back in Ocala for the winter and this is one of the best starts we’ve ever had,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.” Sunday’s course was designed by Tim Hott of Cumming, Iowa, and the event featured 28 competitors. After the first round, only four clear rounds returned for a jump-off as Erynn Ballard of Tottenham, Ont., aboard Looking Back Farm’s Robin Van Roosendael and Taylor McMurtry of Barrington Hills, Ill., in the irons of her own Just An Illusion, joined Fenney’s two mounts. Ballard and Robin Van Roosendael were the first to challenge the jump-off course and set the pace at 52.406 seconds but had four faults.

Double Take Fenney and MTM Timon were next and were en route to a clear effort until a rail came down at the last fence. The pair finished the course in 48.176 seconds to take over the lead. McMurtry, now a professional at Thinkslikeahorse with head trainer Aaron Vale, was the next to return aboard Just An Illusion. Last year, the duo won their very first Grand Prix together in the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix, and hoped that history would repeat itself again this year. Coming off a fifth place finish in Thursday’s Grand Prix, the duo took the field and had an impressive outing. Unfortunately, the second to last fence came down and McMurtry finished in fourth with a time of 53.488 seconds. “This was a great week,” said McMurtry, 19, one of the youngest professionals in the field. “My horse loves to show here and he’s usually just as excited as I am when we do well. I won the first week last year so I was hoping this would become my tradition, but two ribbons in the same week is a great start! I’m glad Tracy [Fenney] got to win on her birthday – she’s one of the best.” As Fenney already had the win secured, she returned for her second ride aboard MTM Centano and the crowd cheered as she posted the only double-clear effort of the group in 45.927 seconds for the win. “Today’s class was pretty hard,” Fenney admitted. “There were a lot clear and I thought Thursday’s class was a technical course, but Tim [Hott] certainly built a big, technical course today. There were a lot of tight, inside turns to some big verticals. I think we ended up with a good jump-off though.” Fenney remains a crowd favorite at HITS Ocala. “I’m a big fan of Tracy [Fenney],” said E. Sue Bopp of EMO. “I was telling her as we took our presentation photo, aside from last year, I can’t remember a time when she hasn’t been standing there with me as the winner. This is some of the best weather we’ve ever had here and we’re always thrilled to be a part of this show.” Fenney, a Pfizer Million alumnus, plans to make her third appearance in the annual event. “I’ve finished up well the last two years in the [Pfizer] Million and I even competed in the [Diamond Mills] $500,000 Hunter Prix [Final] last year, so it’s safe to say we’ll be trying again this year,” Fenney added. Ballard finished the class in third place, while Hugh Graham of Reddick, Fla., and Distant Star 3E finished fifth with the fastest four-fault score from the first round.

FENNEY AND MTM TIMON START WITH A WIN IN THE $25,000 SMARTPAK GRAND PRIX Fenney got her momentum going earlier in the first week of rated competition with a win on Feb. 2 in the first $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, aboard MTM Farm’s MTM Timon. “I was pretty nervous. It’s been two or three months since we’ve showed and I wasn’t sure how we’d be our first day back to work,” said Fenney after the class. “I’m lucky, Timon always jumps great and in the past year he’s really learned how to go fast and turn better which really helped us out today.”
Thirty-two unique horse-and-rider combinations got in on the action to challenge Tim Hott’s first-round course. Thirteen jumping efforts included a double combination at fence four and a triple at fence nine, but the majority of downed rails came at fence 10 and beyond. Thirteen pairs conquered the initial course to advance to a six-effort jump-off and the top five all boasted double-clear rounds at the completion of the class. Fenney entered the ring in the middle of the jump-off pack to post a clear round in 35.059 seconds and establish the time to beat. Not one of the six remaining riders was able to catch her, however, and she and MTM Timon stayed in first place. “Tim [Hott] did a nice job with the course. It was tricky in a few spots and I’m sure there were more clean than he had wanted in the first round, but it was a perfect set for the open-
ing week. I didn’t get to see the horses that went before me in the jump-off since I had a horse in the 6-year-old jumpers, so I really didn’t get to see how they went or what was changed. It probably worked out better because I was able to just focus on my horse and let him do his thing. We tightened up the turns in a few spots and he galloped really well, which made the difference for us today,” said Fenny, who will be in Ocala for the circuit with her sights set on making it back to the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix in September. Second to ride in the jump-off was Callan Solem of Glenmoore, Pa., on one of two mounts. She rode Torlando Group’s VDL Torlando early in the jump-off to secure second place with a clear round in 36.474 seconds. Solem was two-for-two in the top five as she and Magic Cruise, owned by Horseshoe Trail Farm, rode clear in 37.010 seconds for third place. Rounding out the top five in the class were Mark Jungherr of Amesbury, Mass., in the irons of Starlite Farm’s Colourline, who posted a second round time of 38.068 seconds with no faults in fourth and Taylor McMurtry aboard Just An Illusion in fifth, respectively. By winning the first Pfizer Million qualifiers of the rated circuit at HITS Ocala, Fenney is well on her way to finding a spot in this year’s return of the world’s richest class. Fenney and MTM Timon are no stranger to Pfizer Million glory as the pair posted top 20 finishes in both the 2010 and 2011 offerings of the class. To make an appearance in the 2012 Pfizer Million, riders will need to bank eight qualifying classes to become eligible. Then the top 40 riders, based on money won on their leading horse, will earn their spot in the line-up for the class.

Hunter Prix Highlights Jennifer Alfano and Sting capture the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix at HITS Ocala
s the Ocala Premiere celebrated its first full week of rated show jumping at HITS Post Time Farm, hunter riders were treated with another gorgeous day to showcase the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix on Feb. 5. Jennifer Alfano of Buffalo, N.Y., one of the nation’s top hunter riders, enjoyed a successful day after she captured the blue ribbon in Sunday’s main hunter event aboard Helen Lenahan’s Sting. Doug Russell of Ocala designed a first-round course for 35 competitors and welcomed the top 12 scores to return for a second round to determine the overall winner. Alfano and Sting posted the best first-round score of 87 to lead the way and followed it with a second-round high score of 89 to earn a decisive victory. Alfano is no stranger to the winner’s circle, and throughout her illustrious career has won many top finishes at nearly every major horse show and year-end finals in the country. “It was a nice course,” said Alfano. “I think a lot of the horses rode nicely and it was a fun class to do. This class has become very popular, especially with the [Diamond Mills Hunter Prix] Finals and they’ve done a great job at making it feel special.” Second place was awarded to Chris Nelson of Northlake, Texas, aboard Playboy Des Plants of le Bocage, owned by The Stables at le Bocage.

She needs the experience and this was a great day for her. She loves to run; the faster she runs the better she gets, so I’m looking forward to seeing how far she goes this season. It feels great to be back in Ocala for another winter and this was the perfect way to start off.”

Mary Verrandeaux’s “Show Ring” Selected as Cover Art for the 2012 HITS Ocala Official Show Program Accomplished equine artist Mary Verrandeaux, a longtime supporter of HITS Ocala, has been selected as the cover artist for the 2012 HITS Ocala Official Show Program that is available now at HITS Post Time Farm. Verrandeaux, who lives in Ocala, has been featured on the cover of several HITS Official Show Programs, including the cover of the 2009 HITS Ocala Winter Circuit Program. This year’s illustration is entitled “Show Ring” and features a hunter rider turning the corner when on course in a cool, calm and collected manner. “I took the photo [that formed the basis for the final artwork] at HITS Ocala a couple of years ago,” said Verrandeaux. “It’s a neat illustration because the horse and rider are looking in the same direction and fo-
cused on the same goal. It’s one of my favorite pictures that I have ever painted.” “Mary does wonderful work and being from Ocala she knows first-hand how beautiful the property is and her paintings display that. We love having her back for another year,” said Leslie Phillips, of HITS. An honors graduate from Sarasota’s Ringling College of Art and Design, Verrandeaux paints everything from still lifes to landscapes and portraits. Originally from upstate New York, she moved to Marion County in 1978 to be closer to her parents. As a child, she and her sister grew up showing and riding horses. The girls learned responsibility through the process. “It taught us how to work hard, and when we won, it meant so much more. Now at
HITS, I see many of the people I grew up with still working, riding, and training horses. Marion County is blessed to have such a great horse show,” she said. Verrandeaux says she comes to HITS every year. This season she will have a booth to display her artwork located in the vendor courtyard during the Ocala Winter Festival. Art collectors and equine enthusiasts can find her work by visiting HITS Post Time Farm in Ocala or through her website, mverrandeaux.com.

The Live Oak International Driving Event will celebrate its 20th year in 2012. The competition kicks off on March 22 at Charlotte Weber’s pristine Live Oak Plantation in Ocala, which spans more than 4,500 acres. Over this 20-year period the event has been the industry standard for Combined Driving competition, welcoming leading drivers, trainers, coaches and owners from Europe and North America and drawing thousands of people to the area. The event serves the dual purpose of giving the public a chance to enjoy world-class combined driving competition while also supporting many non-profit and charity goals. The 2012 event also hosts the USEF Four-In-Hand National Championship. The multigenerational love for equestrian sports shared by the Weber family will take another logical step in 2012, with the addition of a Jumping Speed Class following Dressage on Friday, and a Jumping Grand Prix following the Marathon on Saturday. This event will provide spectators with some of the best jumping competition and some of the best driving competition at the same venue on the same afternoons. Live Oak is also hosting the second Horse Fever Auction Friday evening. The first auction in 2002 raised almost $1 million for Marion County charities. Concessions and a Vendor Village will be open during the entire competition. Tailgating is available for the Driving Marathon on Saturday. To reserve a tailgating space, contact 352-207-3615. Admission is $10 at the gate for adults and $5 for seniors and children under 12. It is strongly suggested that spectators bring lawn chairs as seating is very limited.

Horse owners are invited to submit a close-up picture of their horse along with a 600-character-or-less essay on how and why their horse is unique. The grand prize winner will receive a digital camera. “Just like a horse’s iris, every horse is unique in its own way,” said David Knupp, marketing manager, Global Animal Management. “We’re looking forward to reading these equine stories from horse lovers and enthusiasts as well as educating the industry on eyeD, the first iris scanning method of equine identification.” Each photo and essay will be posted to the eyeD Facebook page for fans to view. After the first phase of the contest, a panel of judges will narrow the entries down to eight finalists, whose stories and photos will be featured on the Facebook page on March 7. EyeD Facebook users will then have the chance to vote on the grand champion. All eight finalists will receive a customized horse halter. The grand prize winner will be announced on Mar. 19.
