Week IV at HITS Ocala aboard MTM Centano racy Fenney is on her way to becoming the Platinum Performance Leading Grand Prix Rider of the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit after her fourth Grand Prix victory of the season on Sunday, Feb. 26. Fenney, of Flower Mound, Texas, rode MTM Farm’s MTM Centano to the win in the $50,000 Strongid® C 2X Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, to cap a fantastic week, which included a blue ribbon in Thursday’s $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. “This has been an unbelievable season,” said Fenney, easily the most dominant rider of the circuit thus far. “My horses are going really well here and I haven’t had to take a break. We keep them fit, they’re happy, they jump in

each Grand Prix and I don’t jump them in between.” Kenny Krome of Westminster, Md., designed a course that challenged the 33 competitors. As the first 10 riders failed to produce clear rounds, it was Grand Prix veteran Aaron Vale of Morriston, Fla., aboard Doug’s Crew’s Honeylands Douglason who got the excitement flowing with the fault-free round. Vale, as well as Fenney, each piloted two mounts to the jump-off. Vale’s second ride was aboard Bonnie Smith’s Tibor. At the end of the first round, 13 pairs were set to return for Krome’s challenging eight-effort jump-off. It wasn’t until the seventh trip that Krome’s code was cracked. Kristen VanderVeen of St. Charles, Ill., and Bull Run’s Alpha & Omega, owned by Bull Run Jumpers, Inc., were the first to rise to the challenge with a clear round and set the Great American Time to Beat at 44.27 seconds. VanderVeen finished the class in fifth place. “It’s nice to be back in Ocala,” said VanderVeen, one of brightest young riders in the country. “I’ve been showing this horse a long time now and I have some new ones I’m also excited about. And the Grand Prix classes here are always good for me and my horses.” Vale and Tibor were next to show and easily stole the lead

Tracy Fenney and MTM Farm’s MTM Centano gain momentum toward qualifying for the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix with a win in the Feb. 23 $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, at HITS Ocala.

by shaving nearly four seconds off the time in a blazing 40.37 seconds. His leading time lasted three rounds until Fenney and MTM Centano executed the winning round in 39.29 seconds. Vale has had a tremendous season thus far at HITS Ocala, with top place finishes in multiple Grand Prix classes, including a third place finish in Thursday’s $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, and a fourth place finish in the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health on Feb. 19. “I knew Aaron [Vale] was fast and he’s always a tough one to beat,” said Fenney. Fenney noted some difficult points on the course. “The Voltaire jump posed some difficulty in that it was rather large and was either heading toward the gate or toward the VIP tent. When the horses were headed to the oxer, they tended to shift toward the gate. The other direction put them going toward the VIP tent, and a lot of them don’t like that,” she said. “My horse seems to go even better off the clock than in the first round. Coming down the hill I did seven over to the vertical and that set them up a bit rather than going bold in six.” One of the final two competitors who tried to top Fenney, Patty Stovel of Chester Springs, Pa., and her own Carigor Z posted a final time of 40.90 seconds to finish in third place for the second Sunday in a row. ern Pines, N.C., and Kendra Bullington’s Patent Pending were the last to show and produced a clear round in 40.91 seconds to finish in fourth. As the road to the Pfizer Million continues, Fenney leads the way in the 2012 Pfizer Million Rider Rankings. “It’s very exciting to be on top of the standings this early into the year,” said Fenney. “My husband [Mike McCormick] and I are looking forward to going back to Saugerties again for the third year in a row to show in the Finals there. It’s a lovely place and the Pfizer Million is one of my favorite classes I’ve ever competed in.”

A WIN IN THE $25,000 SMARTPAK GRAND PRIX QUALIFIES FENNEY FOR THE 2012 PFIZER MILLION Tracy Fenney banked her eighth Grand Prix of the qualifying season with a win Feb. 23 in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, aboard MTM Farm’s MTM Centano to become eligible for her third appearance in the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix. No stranger to Pfizer Million glory, Fenney appeared in HITSon-the-Hudson’s big-ticket class in both 2010 and 2011 with two top-20 finishes. Fenney has her sights firmly set on September’s offering. She stole first place in the preliminary Rider Rankings from former Canadian Olympian Jill Henselwood with two second-place Grand Prix finishes in Week III. The win was Fenney’s third during the HITS Winter Circuit in Ocala and MTM Centano’s huge stride ate up Course Designer Ken Krome’s tracks. He presented technicality over size to both horse and rider, with a water obstacle at fence No. 4 as well as a double and triple combination in the second half of the course. “He did a really nice job. The first round jumps were not super tall and gave the horses a good chance,” said Fenney of Krome’s design. “The second round verticals were tall and we really had to be careful, but he [MTM Centano] has a giant, flowing stride and he really rises to the occasion without spooking.”

Tracy Fenney and MTM Centano accept winning honors from husband Mike McCormick and HITS’ Caitlin Howley and Lisa Engel. Winners were presented with a bottle of Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay courtesy of Sonoma-Cutrer, HITS Official Wine Sponsor.

Fenney was one of eight riders to advance to the jump-off out of a starting field of 27. The top six all went double clear and the final standings came down to a speed duel. MTM Centano’s stride paid off as he carried Fenney through the second round course in 40 seconds flat for the win. The last clear round of the day was posted by Germany’s own Andre Thieme in the irons of his own Quonschbob and they were the only pair to threaten Fenney’s lead with a time of 41.63 seconds. Aaron Vale earned a third place ribbon after finishing the jump-off round in 42.14 seconds with no faults in the irons of Honeylands Douglason. Vale was first to challenge the jump-off course and set the Great American Time to Beat. Rounding out the top five were Harold Chopping of Southern Pines, N.C., aboard Kendra Bullington’s Patent Pending with a second-round time of 43.01 seconds and Silvio Mazzoni of Leesburg, Va., who posted a jump-off time of 44.34 seconds on his own Remonta Habano. The HITS Ocala Winter Circuit continues with the Ocala Tournament, Feb. 28-March 4 and features two more qualifiers for the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix, including the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, on March 1 and the $50,000 Ring Power Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, on March 4. Riders will have their mind on qualifying and being a part of HITS Championship Weekend, which will take place Sept. 7-9 at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, N.Y. and will present the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix, the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final and the $250,000 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix Final. HCD

*In order to be eligible to for the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix, a rider needs to compete in eight (8) or more Qualifying Grand Prix at HITS. Once a rider has competed in eight (8) Qualifying Grand Prix, the money won on their leading horse will place them in the 2012 Pfizer Million Rider Rankings.

olling Acres Farm scored a huge victory on Feb. 26 when professional rider Mary Lisa Leffler and Rolling Acres’ Gerona 92 captured the win in the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix at the Ocala Masters. A returning Diamond Mills Hunter Prix rider, Leffler is well on her way to qualifying for the 2012 Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final. Forty-six horse-and-rider combinations prepared their Sunday best to compete over a first-round course set by Ocala’s Doug Russell. After a first-round score of 85 and a second-round score of 84, Leffler, of Brookville, Md., secured the win with a total of 169 points. “This is one of the best classes offered each week in my opinion,” said Leffler, one of the most consistent and talented high-performance riders to show in both hunters and jumpers. “It’s just a fun event for everyone – the riders, owners and the people that come and watch – everyone seems to enjoy it.” Last year, Leffler found success in many Devoucoux Hunter Prix, earning several top ribbons at HITS Ocala and HITS Culpeper and the victory in the $10,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix at the 2011 Ocala Tournament. The top ribbons earned her a spot at the inaugural Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final last September where she and Zivago finished in 10th place overall. “Competing at the Finals last year was an amazing opportunity,” said Leffler. “That was the first time we’ve ever been to Saugerties and we all enjoyed it there. I know we’re looking forward to being there again this year and my horse

and I have so much history that it will be extra special showing together in that class.” Leffler and Gerona 92 are no strangers to success together. They were an incredible team in the jumpers at the Grand Prix level for many years and qualified for prestigious indoor finals. Gerona 92 was retired from Grand Prix competition and continued earning ribbons in the Big Equitation with Leffler’s niece, Ashley Foster. Always a part of the Rolling Acres barn, Gerona 92 has found her new niche in the Hunters. “I just think it’s incredible that this horse has gone from winning Grand Prix, to winning Equitation and now winning in the Hunters,” said Patty Foster, who is Leffler’s sister and Rolling Acres’ trainer. “It’s not always so common to see a horse cross over, but Gerona 92 has always been special to us whether Mary has been showing or my daughter Ashley [Foster]. And after all these years we’re just pleased with what we’ve accomplished. This horse will have a home forever with us.” Fellow high-performance riders Harold Chopping and Robin Fairclough rode their way to the ribbons as well. Chopping, of Southern Pines, N.C., finished on Sunday with the second place ribbon aboard Caroline Russell’s Caramo. Fairclough, of Newton, N.J., placed third aboard Lisa Kerkorian’s Falcao. The duo captured the win in the first $2,500 Devoucoux Hunter Prix to kick-off the unrated HITS Ocala Pre-Circuit earlier this winter. “This was a good day for us,” said Fairclough. “The circuit has been good so far and I’m looking forward to showing this horse more this summer at Saugerties and qualifying for the [Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix] Final.” Rounding out the top five were Bill Ellis of Ocala and Four Winds Farm’s Naturally in fourth place and Kathryn Mittauer of Middleburg, Fla., aboard her own Allawishus in fifth. The win gave Leffler some leverage in the 2012 Rider Rankings for the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final, and she hopes to make a second appearance in the class during HITS Championship Weekend Sept. 7-9. While focused on getting qualified, Leffler and the entire Rolling

Junior and amateur riders looked to earn points toward the $250,000 HITS 3’Hunter Prix Final on Saturday, Feb. 25, when 40 competitors took the field in the $5,000 HITS 3’Hunter Prix. Kimberly Maloomian of Needham, Mass. captured the blue ribbon aboard Urlala, owned by Terry S. Maloomian. Second and third places were awarded to Georgia Bloom of Morristown, N.J., and her own Not Fade Away and the always consistent Jodi Czaplick of Ocala and her own Untold, respectively. The HITS 3’ Hunter Prix has become one of the most popular hunter classics for junior and amateur riders this circuit and will undoubtedly find major success this spring and summer at HITS Saugerties and HITS Culpeper. Each class is a qualifier for the $250,000 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix Final, the richest junior and amateur Hunter class in the nation. The HITS Ocala Winter Circuit continues with the Ocala Tournament Feb. 28-March 4, and will offer another qualifier for the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final on Sunday, March 4, in the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix. The $1,500 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix is a qualifier for the $250,000 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix Final and is set for Saturday, March 3 HCD .

Florida... the Best State for Business 16 Horse Capital Digest • February 16, 2012

From coast to coast, Florida’s tax-friendly, pro-business environment is poised and ready to attract new companies and create new employment opportunities. No tax on stallion seasons. No personal state income tax. No individual capital gains tax. National leader in veterinary and equine research. Ranked third in the U.S. for number of horses and size of horse industry. Feed and animal health items, along with other specific items, are also exempt. Horses are exempt from sales tax when purchased from their original breeder. Florida’s greenbelt exemption provides property tax breaks for Florida horse farms. Physical climate allows for year-round training, racing, showing and business opportunities.

Zalinero ready for the ring. “He’d rather be out at the paddock,” Stovel said before mounting. 2) It’s been a nice vacation from Uxbridge, Ontario, for Renee Connors and her Holsteiner, Agent 260. “We’re happy to be out of the snow and to ride outside – and the grand prix ring is beautiful,” she said. 3) Felicia Matsinger of Ocean City, Md., said she has enjoyed HITS Ocala this year with Amberley Farms, and riding firstyear horse Minion. 4) It only takes Melissa Goerlach of Saratoga, N.Y., a few minutes to tack up a well-behaved Salem. The 8-year-old Holsteiner is nearly ready to advance to the level 4 jumpers, Goerlach said. 5) After a quick cleanup by Terrapin Hill Farm’s Amanda Longo, Reighn is ready to get to work, after several days of rain at HITS Post Time Farm. 6) The fashion and riding apparel at vendor Rose Hollow may catch attention, but Gus is the one stealing customers’ hearts. The brindle English Bulldog is the first to greet guests and has made a name for himself, said owner Kendall Clark. “He loves being at a horse show. Of course, he thinks it’s a ‘Gus show.’” 7) Addison McQuaker, 4, with big sister Kieley, 9, and friend Colton McKay, 6, take turns with a coloring book on a quiet morning in 5 the Gryphon Farm barn.
