e have all been there, missed the corner, didn’t see the arrow or just whiskey throttled and ended up cutting your own trail which lead to an unsolved opportunity or a undisclosed location. Like a lot of us right now, I kind of feel like I’m off the trail and I’m not talking about the famous Johnson Line! As none of us has experienced or witnessed anything like we are dealing with right now; rest assured we will be back very soon, if not 100% but enough to ease the pain of this shutdown. As I write this, talks of opening back up and some signs of activity are emerging. As with anything the government is involved with, the wheels turn very slow as it seems like forever to take one step forward. One thing for sure, I will have all my home projects done so when the green flag is thrown, I will be ready. This may sound a little off base, but I could go riding on the weekends and even go racing for what some of these projects are costing me and if we don’t get back to racing pretty soon, I’m going to be broke! LOL All jokes aside, I hope our FTR family maintains their faith and stabilization through these uncertain times and keeps positive as our days are coming back very soon. Rest assured that FTR is planning on our banquet August
1 and if for some reason that is delayed, we have plan B, C or D. Our event schedule is coming together for the start of the new season and FTR will be monitoring and making adjustments as needed to align ourselves with any changes. Society may wonder why we are talking about our series, getting back out riding and circling the wagons when we have this pandemic going on. My answer to that is; we will not let this run our lives and deprive us from what we love. Along with the honey dos and home projects, get your race weapons ready and think about our local dealers and vendors that have supported FTR when you get ready for parts and accessories, they need our support also. Thanks for listening, Randy

ey guys, my name is Joshua Guffey, I’m a GNCC racer and a trainer for Joshua Guffey Fitness. I had the opportunity to write an article for the April issue introducing myself and letting you all know how I got interested in fitness and a little background of myself. If you haven’t been able to read it, be sure to grab a copy and give it a read. For this month’s topic, I would like to discuss the importance of riding in a taller gear in the woods. This was something that I struggled with when I first transitioned from motocross to off-road. In motocross, you ride in taller gears quite a bit, but you’re also wide open on a wide track. During races, depending on what class you’re in, can last anywhere from ten minutes to thirty-five minutes. Off-road racing compared to motocross racing are definitely two different animals. Offroad you ride in taller gears more often to lug the motor, help the bike handle better, and also you have to make sure your bike makes it through that three-hour race. If you ride with the motor screaming for three hours, you’re putting your bike at risk not make it the entire race. You are also working yourself twice as hard. This is something that I struggled with when I first made the switch to off-road. I tried to have the sprint mentality that I acquired through motocross and that just doesn’t work in the woods. I had to be comfortable with the bike lugging through the course, which sounds slower than if you had the bike screaming and up on the rev-limiter. I had to teach myself how to not focus on anything but being smooth. Being smooth in the woods means that you’re riding in a taller gear, therefore you’re putting the bike where you want it to go. This makes the bike feel great, and you are actually going very fast. I thought that if I rode in the gears I needed to be in that my lap times might go down because the motor isn’t working as hard. Turns out that was very untrue. That is when everything started to click, I started learning something new every lap riding in those gears. It’s amazing that you can go faster with your bike and yourself not working as hard, and it’s all because you’re “going slower to go faster.” That is a true statement in woods racing. Imagine you are racing and you come up on a rock garden, slick roots, single track section, basically all the technical sections
10 www.floridatrailriders.org
you find in the woods, the last thing you want is the motor to be screaming trying to go through those sections. Your traction level is gone, barely any control, and you’re lucky if you aren’t on the ground before you get through the section. That is a prime example of going slower to go faster. If you are riding in the taller gear and you approach one of those sections, you’re heart rate isn’t as high because you haven’t been fighting the bike for the whole race, you’re already riding smooth because the bike is working great in the taller gears. Therefore, you’re able to navigate your way through the technical sections with complete control. That has been one of the biggest learning curves for me transferring over to off-road. I had to learn to be able to turn off the sprint switch and be able to go from sprinting to a smooth fast pace in a single moment. I’ve had an awesome time trying to learn how to better myself in all aspects of riding and I’m excite to keep making steps forward. I’m working hard every day in therapy to get back on the bike as soon as possible. It’ll be great to be able to go racing again and I know I’m ready for it. It sounds like we will be going to be racing soon, so let’s get back to what we enjoy doing most and have a blast. I’ll see you all the races. If you have any questions about this article or anything about weight loss, general fitness, or just a random fitness question, I would be happy to answer them. I hope you all have a great week! ~ E-mail: joshuaguffeyfitness@gmail.com Phone: (229)-416-6351 Instagram: @joshuaguffeyfitness Facebook: Joshua Guffey Fitness
FTR HEROES
I think every racer out there that has a honey-do list can relate to David...good job on the garden! Not front line but a hero none-the-less.
When Vet B/Pre Mod B racer Jason Croley isn't going fast on his dirt bike he's living every kids dream and driving a fire truck as a Engineer/ EMT for the Polk County Fire Rescue. What guy wouldn't want to do that?
We all read about Danita Allen in the last issue on how she's coping on the front lines of the Covid battle, but even heroes get a day off and she made the most of it. "I decided to go blueberry picking at Keel and Curley Winery in Plant City. It's a great way to get out of the house and still practice social distancing. I picked 6 pounds of berries and found a hidden wine bottle in the fields. It was called an "adult Easter egg hunt". I won a free bottle of wine."
"Our mom is our hero because she teaches kids and she’s sweet. She never gives up and she supports us in all we do. #bestmotomom" ~Gabrielle and Ryder Voltaire Teachers should be everyones heroes. Thank you for doing the hard work Allison.

uring this time of need fighting the Covid19 pandemic, hospitals around the country have been overwhelmed and are in desperate need for personal protective equipment or PPE. Companies and manufacturers, including many in the FTR family, have found a way to step up and do their part to support the doctors, nurses, and first responders. Jason Ennis and the staff at Central Florida PowerSports found their way to give their support in a program called Goggles For Docs. Jason took some time out of his busy schedule to chat and explain the program and what FTR did to help the cause.
What is the Goggles For Docs Program?
So, it was started by some snow ski enthusiast out west and they realized their connection with ski goggles and their access to goggles could be helpful as PPE’s. I think there might have been some doctors or nurses involved in this. So this group started organizing this website and they did the frame work for collecting these goggles from around the country and to be a able to vet the hospitals that needed them and help get them out to the right places. The website, gogglesfordocs.com, takes you through the process, so if you have goggles to donate they make it real easy now. You click a button to find a hospital and there’s volunteers behind the scenes that get those hospitals listed on there and then it will give instructions on how many goggles each hospital is looking for, new or used, quantity, and then you can make those donations and get them sent out.
How did you and Central Florida PowerSports get involved in such a big way?
One of our partners, Fox Racing, put a post out that they were doing something to help. It was a Saturday morning and I remember reading it because it really caught my attention and I’ve been thinking of how we can help? We are in the powersports industry, what is there we can do to help first responders and doctors and nurses… what is it? I just couldn’t figure out what that was and then I saw this post that they were doing Goggles For Doctors and I immediately got involved. I looked at it and saw they were looking for volunteers and looking for drop off locations and I signed up all four of our locations that morning as drop off points. I volunteered as a regional coordinator in the state of Florida and then just started spreading the word on it and it continued to grow. I had customers mailing in goggles. I have anonymous donations
12 www.floridatrailriders.org
that I don’t even know where they came from. It’s pretty cool. The goggles were coming in and we were cleaning them, servicing them, and packaging them. Goggles for docs gave us guidelines for that. So, that’s how it started, and it has continued to gain momentum.
What’s the process of getting the goggles ready to be shipped out?
First thing is to just clean them with soap and water in a sink. We clean them all really good and if they need lenses, and we have the lenses, we replace them. Some of them we are getting in are to deteriorated; the foam is in bad shape and they’re too old, so we’ discarding them. It’s no big deal. We’re sorting through those. So, after we clean them we’re disinfecting them, individually packaging them in Zip-Loc bags and then distribute them at that point. So along the way, we were getting these donations in and I could see the need was a lot more than the ten or twelve or fifteen we were able to send out at a time, so as a company we made a decision to spend some money on it and we went to Fox and ordered seventy-five goggles from them just as a donation from Central Florida PowerSports. At the same time the Florida Trail Riders and the board of directors approached me and asked how they can help. I explained the program to them and the BOD was really concerned that the goggles were going to go to good use and actually be utilized. That was one of my concerns too but I felt really confident that the Goggles For Docs and the volunteers in the background were doing a really good job vetting those hospitals and making sure they really do need them.
Do you ship them to the hospitals yourself or do they all go to the Goggles For Docs people first?
We’re sending them directly to the hospitals and that’s another piece we’re participating in. CFPS and our dealerships are paying for all the shipping and all the manpower for packaging and getting them out. On most of the orders we’ve been using overnight shipping because the need is immediate. Those hospitals need them right away.
Are sending them in state or out of state too?
The list is constantly changing. The first couple of shipments we did were in Florida. I think the first ones were down in Miami, partly because we wanted to help out our own state and we wanted to get them there as fast as we could. So once Florida was full we started looking in the South East. The next one we shipped to was in Louisiana because they had a big outbreak and there was lots of reports of them struggling with PPE. Since then we’ve kind of been focused on the South East.
How are you reaching out for donations?
Through social media. We’ve put post up about what we were doing and that’s where I think we got most of our response and we have donation boxes at each dealership with the Goggle For Docs logo and flyers about what it is. Actually, by just having those boxes out there a lot of our customers came back on their next trip to our dealerships with goggles to donate.
demo street bike that KTM had shipped out to him and we were talking about that and got to compare notes about our mutual friend Donny. That was pretty neat.
So if anyone still wants to donate just send them to you?
All they have to do is mail or drop them off at one of our dealerships and we will take care of the rest. Central Florida PowerSports, Sarasota PowerSports, West Coast PowerSports in Clearwater and Tampa PowerSports. The main thing is we just want to help the doctors and I finally found way to do that.
How do the hospitals get on the distribution list?
There’s a form they submit when they’re in need and they can put on there how many they need, for what department, who the contact is at the hospital that would be receiving them.
Tell us about the FTR donation.
On the FTR side, they were able to purchase 100 goggles from 100% and donate them all on behalf of the organization. We sent out the FTR donation of 100% goggles and the CFPS donation of Fox goggles to nine different hospitals in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Randy and Teresa Faul, Angel Mendez, and Jerry Curtis came in to present the donation. It made for a nice pile of goggles.
At the time of this interview Goggles For Docs has established more than 200 drop off locations and has donated 41,788 goggles with a need of 1,178 more to fulfill the current list of hospitals. Check out www.gogglesfordocs.com for more info. FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS Getting to know...
The Cox Family
A
s we celebrate some of the Moto-Moms let's take a moment to get to know, a little bit more, one of the newest mothers in the FTR family. Jesse and Martin Cox welcomed their little dirt rider, Mark, into the world back in January. Happy first Mother's Day Jesse!
H
ow did you and your husband meet? My husband and I met through mutual friends although I was interested in him because I found out he rode Dirt bikes! Almost immediately after we met I moved to the Keys to finish school at the Dolphin Research Center Training Institute to peruse my life long dream working with marine mammals. We had a long distance relationship most of our dating life. We made it work by meeting at Florida Tracks and Trails nearly every other weekend to ride! We dated for a year until he proposed and 8 months after that we got married!
How did you get involved in FTR? I grew up riding dirt bikes with my dad and brother. We rode at Croom on most weekends! Although I have rode most of my life, I’ve always been involved in so many activities so I’ve never really hyper focused on one until meeting Martin. Shortly after Martin and I started dating he introduced me to FTR, as he finally tried one himself coming from motocross and mountain bike racing. My love for riding only grew after that! Who races? Martin, me, my brother and eventually our son will be out there on his little PW 50! What classes? I race women’s A and Martin races plus 30 or Open A.
16 www.floridatrailriders.org
What is a typical race weekend like? A typical race weekend for us is a bit hectic and unlike most. We both normally have work on Saturdays and have to take care of that before traveling to the races. Most the time we load up Friday night and Saturday after work and hit the road. It is rare we get to the course before dark and get setup. Once there we fully embrace the experience and hangout with friends and enjoy the evening. Sunday mornings we get signed up and normally I will head for practice as soon as it opens at 8:30 then Martin would get his bike and self ready and go ride a lap. Once in from practice we re prep the bikes for the race and help each other out on the start and in the pits if needed. My mom typically comes with other us to watch our baby which is incredibly helpful! It’s a full day and a ton of fun to watch each other race. What is your favorite part of the weekend? Honestly every weekend of ours consists of riding. Whether it’s trails or a moto track we make the very best of it. We also enjoy other activities such as mountain biking and surfing. People often ask us how much life has changed since having a baby and to be honest it’s only gotten better! We typically take turns riding while one watches our son. We are so ready for our little one to be out there riding with us! If you could change one thing to make things better at the races what would it be? I think the races are perfect! We love the way the races are set up and we love the atmosphere. The only thing we would change is being able to spend the whole weekend enjoying it instead of always pulling in late Saturday night. It’s never long enough for us! If we could have a race weekend every weekend that would also be ideal lol!
Who designed your nursery? My mom and I designed our nursery. I had it planned pretty much my whole life!

he Big O Trail Riders hosted The Big Buck Hare Scramble back in February and little did they know that a unprecedented world wide pandemic would force the FTR board of directors to shut down all racing and end the 2019-2020 season. The club put on an amazing event on beautiful brand new property. Nobody could stop Landon Lynn as he raced his way to second AA and overall win of the season with Scott Gawler Jr and Tegan Temple rounding out the podium. This win would see Landon finish the shortened championship season in second place behind Garrett Edmisten. This makes eleven AA championships for Garrett. Congratulations. Brandon Frazier would take his sixth Quad AA overall win and the series championship. Tyler Reynolds and Chris Kenny would finish the series in second and third place. Congratulations to all FTR racers for a great season of racing. With a little luck we will all be back healthy and strong for the 2020-2021 AMA Florida Hare Scrambles State Championship series in no time at all.

Facebook page? @TallahasseeTrailRiders Web page? Tallahasseetrailriders.ridetrails.org Highlight any memories, accomplishments, members, members that hold positions within FTR. In 2016 we co-hosted with Big Scrub Trail Riders a harescramble race at Gatorback. It was a great experience getting to work with other club members and land owners. Members from both clubs put in a ton of effort and time to put on a great race and it really exposed just how great the property owners, racing families, and club members are. It was definitely a Highlight for us and has set the bar for future races!
Promoting the image of Responsible Motorcyclist
In 2017 we lost a longtime friend and supporter of FTR and the Tallahassee Trail Riders in Dexter Leadbeater from Hard Labor Creek Off road Park in Chipley, FL. Dexter was a long time supporter of motorcycle racing and avid supporter of youth riders. I will always remember him paying $20 dollars out of his own pocket to the racer that got the Hole Shot in his class. He was a great person and I hope we can help to keep his memory alive for all the great work he did here in North Florida. If there ever was an FTR "Hall of Fame" he would definitely get my vote.
