Borough Council Corner Dear Parishioners,
08
On Wednesday 5th March at Lenham Parish Council meeting I resigned from Maidstone Borough Council as your councillor. I have been honoured to be your councillor for nearly 18 years and it is with regret that I stand down. I have found that at this moment I cannot balance with ease the role as a father to my family, and as a councillor with all the wide and varied roles that it has. I found that whilst in the past I was able with Janettas help to keep it balanced and keep everyone happy that I was slowly not able to perform that task. I acknowledge that some of this may be of my own doing as I wanted to be involved with everyone I could, but unfortunately I found myself not performing the tasks I know I could to the standard I had set. In short I needed to pull away re-group, re prioritise and re think. I hope those that know me appreciate my position, and others just understand that being a parent and a carer is time consuming especially in large households. I would like to thank all those involved with the parish councils for their commitment and effort. For the many, many volunteers
Borough Council Corner
who selflessly give their time for the common love of giving and for the schools whose events I have always enjoyed for the sheer effort of co-ordinating kids to play music, sing, dance and even cook! Some highlights included sitting on top of the St Edmunds Centre (Platts Heath hall) removing ivy with Brian Fuller, it was really hot on our bums! Attending a Pride of Maidstone Award with Joan Macdonald, watching Sandy Bruce Lock-hart open Harrietsham Primary school and the election night when both Janetta & I were your councillors together. I have had a fantastic time. I haven’t ruled out seeking election in the future, but for now my family must come first. Can I personally thank my family and close friends for their love and support over particularly the recent past. I am not disappearing, and I will stay involved in the groups in the villages. Finally I would like to quote from my hero Nelson Mandela “Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again”. Thank you Tom Sams

Young at Heart 60+ I think everyone enjoyed our meeting in February. Who would have thought I would become a model in a fashion show! I don’t think Naomi Campbell has anything to worry about. A big thank you to Bon Marche for putting the event together and we will be having another in the summer. Our next meeting is Thursday 17th April 2-4pm. Oak House food will be giving us a talk on their company and the food they sell. We look forward to seeing you all and if anyone needs a lift please call Jenny on 01622859208. Martin, Tom, Sue, Olive, Jenny, Zoe and Nina Lenham Gardening Society Over 60 members came to our Winter Social in February which was a great success thanks to Pat and her team who prepared a superb buffet which was enjoyed by all. Our April speaker will be Steve Bradley who will be known to many of you as one of the Radio Kent Garden Show presenters. Steve will be talking about ‘Summer in the Garden’
which with his background and knowledge should be a very interesting talk, so please come along and show him what a keen bunch Lenham gardeners are. The competitions will be Five Tulips of the same variety and/or an Easter Bonnet (home made). We have arranged two outings so far the first will be to Wisley on Tuesday 20th May, departing Lenham Square at 9.30am, the cost will be £10 per person tickets will be on sale at the April meeting. Second will be to Hampton Court Flower show on Friday 11th July, departure 9.30am, the cost will be £33 for non members and £25 for members. Lenham W.I Our February speaker, Dr. Cara Robinson, was extremely interesting, and gave us a lot of food for thought and some alarming insights into the prevalence of drug use among young people. We also heard the very understandable reasons for it, in some cases the example set by adults!! On April 5th we are holding a Day School. In the morning we have, an introduction to Tai Chi (as in Calendar Girls!!) and in the afternoon a talk on ‘The Flemish Weavers in Kent.’
19
Our speaker at the April Meeting is Julia Davies, who will be giving us advice and demonstration of ‘Meals for 1or 2’. In May we will be holding our A.G.M. I have just arrived home from a W.I. event at Ascot, entitled ‘Inspiring Women Working Together a very enlightening day!! Elaine Collett

Elaine’s funeral will be held at Charing Crematorium on Thursday 3rd April at 11:20 and we would then be heading to the Tithe Barn in Lenham to celebrate her short but wonderful life. People are welcome to send flowers but donations are also welcome to 2 charities that Elaine always supported. The first is Emilia’s Little Heart and donations can be made through the just giving website http:// www.justgiving.com/NormanMetcalfe1. The second charity is Corpal, http://www.corpal.org.uk/. This charity supports my nephew who was born with ACC and is the charity Elaine completed her 25km walk for last year. Donations can be made to this charity by sending a cheque to the funeral directors A W Court, Brackleigh, Headcorn
Elaine Collett
Road, Grafty Green, Kent ME17 2AP. James Collett It was a huge shock to hear the terrible news of the tragic death of Elaine, wife of Focus Editor James and mother of his two lovely kids. Our thoughts, prayers and best wishes are with James and his family at this awful time. Elaine, like James was a big part of our community, without many people being aware of her roles. Focus and the Lenbus were just two of the community focussed things which she took on and ran with quiet efficiency. At the same time she was a devoted mother and wife, well known on the school run and at after school activities. Such a big spirit within the tight community that is Lenham will be sorely missed. God Bless. Gez Clark
Focus on Nature One of my favourite flowers is the Lesser Celandine.. Ranunculus ficaria, thriving in damp, shady places where even a little mottled sunlight will open the beautiful golden yellow petals. Wordsworth loved this plant, writing three poems about it – ‘There is a flower, the lesser Celandine, That shirks, like many more, from cold and rain, And, the first moment that the sun may shine, Bright as the sun himself, ‘tis out again! He even arranged for it to be carved on his tombstone. Unfortunately the sculptor got confused and carved a Greater Celandine instead....Shame! But now can be seen what must surely be the most dramatically exciting of all spring, flowers.. the Cuckoopint.. Arum maculatum, which can grow up to 18 inches high, with dark green arrowshaped leave, mottled with red, inspiring such local names as ‘Gethsemane’, referring to the blood of the crucified Christ. At the base of the flower head is secreted a sticky liquid, smelling fetid to us but eagerly sought by small flies. However, not much is available, so they buzz around, trying to escape but the exit is blocked y a ring of downwardly pointing stiff hairs. It is the female
area of the plant, so as the flies buzz, they deposit pollen (which is covering their bodies as a result of visits to nearby blooms), on the female carpels. Once all the pollen comes off, those stiff hairs relax and the flies seek and escape, but they cannot, due to another blocking ring of stiff hairs! This is the male area of the flower, so, buzzing around their bodies get smothered with a fresh supply of pollen. After another time interval, those hairs also relax and the flies at last can gain their well-earned freedom! One can only reflect with joy, astonishment and gratitude,, on this example of the wonders of nature which lie all around us. Derek Budge

New Lenham Parish Council Website Lenham Parish Council is launching a new website in May. Our aim is for the website to provide another mechanism for us to communicate with the residents of the Parish. This will be in addition to the notice boards and Focus articles, which we will continue to use.
24
We will be advertising all our meetings and posting all the minutes on the website, as well as general information on what the Parish Council does and links to useful resources, such as where to report potholes. What’s more, we intend to offer space on the website to local clubs and organisations that do not have their own website, which they can then use for attracting members, advertising upcoming events and even posting photographs. The new website will have a modern, user-friendly design that adapts to any device, be it a PC, tablet or smartphone, allowing you to catch-up on Parish news whenever and wherever you want. Future advances will include providing an online forum so that all parishioners can voice their opinion on important matters within the Parish, such as on the Neighbourhood Plan and future housing and commercial developments.
New Lenham Parish Council Website
We need your support to make the website a success. So if you have any news or articles you would like included, or are a member of an organisation interested in having your own space on the website then please contact us. Also, we would like the website to be as visually appealing as possible to attract visitors to the Parish, so we would welcome any photographs of the Parish that you would be willing to donate. You will be able to access the new website at http://lenhamparish. org.uk/ from 1st May. Please direct all enquiries to the Parish Council Clerk, Margo McFarlane at: margo.mcfarlane@ btinternet.com

Well done Lenham Wanderers! Lenham Wanderers Reserves 3 v Early Bird 2 Benevolent Cup Final at Maidstone Football Club – Gallagher Stadium Friday March 7th 2014 On a cold Friday evening Lenham Reserve Senior Squad played their 3rd final in as many years. This was the first final played at the Maidstone United Gallagher Stadium, the previous all being played at Chatham United. So Maidstone League Football has finally Come Home!! Whether it was a change of Venue or a change of surface (Maidstone play on a 3G pitch and Chatham play on grass). The luck was certainly on the Lenham’s side!! Lenham scored an early goal through Sammy Manktelow, but were pegged back to leave the score at 1 – 1 Half Time. After the break Lenham changed its formation and once again gained
the advantage through a well despatched Penalty by Mark Hatcher (won by Daniel Pinder). Early Bird once again came back an equalised. Then Sammy Manktelow pounced on a mistake by the Early Bird Keeper to score his second of the evening and Len ham’s 3rd. The final Result was a win for Lenham Reserves 3-2 even though the Manager Craig (Birthday Boy) Smith who came on at half time tried his best to score for the opposition in the dying minutes!! A good crowd of over 300 people finally saw Lenham Reserves captain Stuart Wilson lift the trophy and a great night was had by all. WWW.lenhamwanderersfc.co.uk

Tips on caring for an older cat The world’s oldest recorded cat was 38 years and three days old when she died in 2005. The tabby and white moggy, named Creme Puff, lived in Texas and her owner even built his cats a feline cinema showing wildlife documentaries. While Creme Puff was a record breaker it is not unusual for cats to live until their late teens and the oldest cat that I have treated was a 25 year old called Zippy. By giving your cat some extra care and looking out for problems you can give them a comfortable old age. Here are some tips on caring for an older cat: 28
1. Most cats over ten will have some arthritis. You may notice that your cat is grooming less, struggling to jump like they used to, becoming grumpier or missing their litter tray. They will benefit from a soft cosy bed, a lower sided litter tray, easy access to food and water without having to jump up and a gentle pace of life. There are medications that can really help with arthritis so if you think your cat is getting stiff or sore ask your vet. 2. Look out for changes such as eating more, drinking excessively or weight loss. These are signs of conditions such as thyroid disease,

diabetes or kidney disease, all of which can be treated. Spoil them with some gentle brushing, food designed for older cats and a cat nip treat. Check them regularly for lumps and bumps - while not all are serious they can cause severe problems if left unchecked. Watch out for smelly breath, red gums and dribbling. These can be signs of dental disease and just like in people cats’ dental problems should be treated as soon as possible. Try not to make too many changes; for example, older cats rarely welcome a new kitten or puppy.
With a bit of TLC our cats can stay healthy and happy for many years. Consider adopting an older cat, they bring a huge amount of joy and are often overlooked in rescue centres. Sarah Foster is a vet who works at Barrow Hill Veterinary Hospital in Ashford.
The Lenham Swimming Club The Village Pool is Back! Pool Opening – Saturday 31st May Thank you to all our new volunteers! Their commitment has made it possible to; once again, open the outdoor swimming pool at Swadelands School for the use of our community during the summer months. We were delighted with the response to our publicity campaign. Volunteers have come forward and are already booked to undertake their Lifeguard training in the run up to the opening. The first of our volunteers to qualify achieved their NPLQ (National Pool Lifeguard Qualification) in February. We are still looking for volunteers to assist with collecting
admission money so please don’t let this stop you volunteering! The emptying of the pool will begin week commencing 28th April, with the cleaning taking place on the 3rd May. The pool has not been used for 3 years so we are starting this early. We hope this will give us the opportunity to address any maintenance issues if we find anything unexpected.
29
We hope to be able to offer the following swimming sessions: 6.00 – 7.30pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 2.30 – 4.00pm Saturday and Sunday The one session on week days will replace the 2 x 45 min sessions run previously.

Thank You Community Centre’s 10th anniversary dinner Due to the generosity of the attendees at the Community Centre’s 10th anniversary dinner and cabaret evening, I am pleased to confirm £301 was raised from the raffle. The raffle was held in support of the Heart of Kent Hospice at Aylesford.
32
We chose the Heart of Kent Hospice to compliment the hard work carried out by the excellent team of volunteers, who work in the Hospice shop at the Corner House complex in The Square Lenham. One particularly generous gentleman gave an extra donation to make the money up to the grand total. The 10th anniversary dinner and cabaret was a huge success and enjoyed by the one hundred plus
guests. On behalf of the trustees and staff of the Community Centre I would like to thank all those who supported the evening. A presentation was made by the Lenham Parish Council to thank all those who have worked tirelessly to sustain the high standard of facilities available at the centre and the warm welcome we have become accustomed to. The gifts for the presentation were purchased with donations from the user groups of the centre. Thank you to LENARA, Lenham Ballet School, the Gardening Society, Mrs J Thomsett and the Lenham Girl Guides. Margo McFarlane (Lenham Parish Clerk)

Marks Story

In November 2012 my partner Lisa suffered her 5th lung collapse, following a CT scan she was diagnosed with possible Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM for short!!), in April 2013 this was diagnosis was confirmed.
LAM is a rare multi-system disease which effects woman. It is a progressive disease that destroys lung tissue and erodes lung function. There is currently no cure and little effective treatment. For some patients lung transplantation is their only means of survival. Lisa and I have always been actively into exercise and keeping fit (in fact we met at a fitness weekend!). We have taken part in many charity bike rides and

running events over the years so this diagnosis came as a huge shock to both of us, wondering what the future held for Lisa. Our initial investigations on the internet were very doom and gloom with life expectancy of 10 years from diagnosis. Lisa was then advised by her consultant to visit the LAM Action website, a charity based in Nottingham which has 2 primary aims : · To provide information & emotional support for LAM patients and their families · To educate health professionals about LAM and advance research into LAM We attended their annual patient meeting in June 2013 and met other patients and the Professor who is leading the research. Lisa and I left this meeting feeling much more informed
and more able to accept the diagnosis, reassured that life expectancy with this disease is not easily predicted due to the rareness and in many instances is longer than the 10 years we had previously read about. Lisa is also in regular contact with other patients through the LAM Action patients self-help group. It was also at this meeting we learnt that LAM is so rare there is currently no government funding for research so LAM Action rely entirely on fund raising and donations. It was then I decided to do my bit and enter the London Marathon to raise funds for LAM Action.
If you would like to support this charity please go to my Just Giving page http://www.justgiving. com/Mark-Winter5 I started my training in January and I am up to half Marathon distance with 5 weeks to go, I have even been swapping running tips with Maz from the Chequers. These remaining few weeks will be to extend my running distance and speed as my target time for the marathon is 4hrs. Many thanks for your support Mark Winter 47

Thoughts & Reports Christian Easter Message April 2014 Lent will soon be over and Easter Day is 20th April.
48
So what’s it all about? Lent is about remembering that Jesus gave up a lot to come and show us what God is like and to offer us a new way of living with a different focus. Just after his baptism in the river Jordan, on the brink of going public with his message, he went into the desert for 40 days. He had nothing to eat. He was preparing for the months and years ahead – he knew life was going to get tough so some training was in order. But it was more than that: he was developing his relationship with God, his Father, and practising dealing with temptation. Each year, when we observe Lent, we are identifying with what Jesus did in the desert. It helps us develop our relationship with God, and it can also help identify our weaknesses, our own temptations, so that we can grow in our relationships with our friends and family, our community and with God. These days, many people focus on doing something positive during Lent, rather than just giving things up. So maybe it’s always letting someone out of a side road when
Thoughts & Reports
you’re driving, or putting aside some money or some tins for the Food Bank in Maidstone, or visiting someone you know to be a bit lonely, or taking someone a homemade cake; perhaps “random acts of kindness” like paying for the shopping for the person in front of you in the shop or newsagent. Me? I’ve given up eating between meals – snacking – and I have decided each day to do something to bless someone around me. So I will remember, when I think of a snack, to pray for someone or something. Perhaps it will encourage me to make a phone call, or visit someone. And I hope that I will do something positive in the community (if you see me about, put me on the spot and ask me what I’ve done today!). It was this training and preparation in the desert that helped Jesus overcome the greatest battle of all – that of letting go of control of his own life and trusting his Father. As he faced the horrific cruelty and pain of death by crucifixion he prayed “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken
away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” His willingness to give his life into God’s safekeeping and to trust him is a challenge to all of us. May you know his grace and strength this

Affordable Housing West Street & Hook Lane, Harrietsham Residents may be aware of the development of new homes adjoining West Street/Hook Lane by Crest Nicholson. This development includes 32 affordable homes, 23 of which are designated for local people with a specific connection to Harrietsham or neighbouring parishes.
56
This is to help address an urgent need in Harrietsham for affordable housing, as clearly shown by the Harrietsham Local Housing Needs Survey which was undertaken on behalf of the parish council by Action with Communities in Rural Kent, with the support of Maidstone Borough Council. The other 9 affordable homes will be for those needing housing in the wider area. The affordable homes for rent and shared ownership will be owned and managed by housing association, Circle Housing Russet. These include 11 homes for local people which are 8 rented homes (two, one bedroom flats, two, two bedroom flats, two, three bedroom houses and two, four bedroom houses), and 3 shared ownership homes (two, two bedroom houses and a three bedroom house).
Full details of this scheme will be available later. There will be phased completions of the affordable homes from August 2014 to March 2015. Criteria for local needs homes Priority for the local needs homes will be given to those who have a local connection to Harrietsham through residence (continuous period of at least five years) including those who have immediate family (mother, father, children, brother, sister) members living in the Parish. Those with employment or about to take up employment in the Parish or who may have been forced to move away from the Parish due to a lack of suitable accommodation, also qualify.

Success comes from working together.
Networking is about meeting people They might become customers. They might become suppliers. Networking is about listening and learning too, that’s why we carefully select expert individuals that have something to say that is worth listening to. Believe it or not one or two networking groups advertise their philosophy “No presentations we’re here to network, not be lectured to.” It must be lovely knowing everything there is to know. We know that no one knows everything, so we are happy to keep our hearts and our ears open. Take a look at a couple of the people we’ve listened to recently.
Patrick Lohlein, Chairman of The Kent Export Club and Alison King from King Associates, HR and Coaching. And then see what we have lined up: • Tuesday 6 May an entertaining presentation by 3 members of LVBA with a presentation called ‘The Ladder’. • Wednesday 28 May (instead of our usual Tuesday in June) networking with South Maidstone Business Association at the Weald of Kent Golf Club, our speaker is Hilary Steel, Editor of Kent Women in Business Magazine. • Tuesday 1 July our regular speaker Emily Chapman from Loud Monkey provides a Social network update.
