Focus Update We recently held a meeting to find volunteers to help within the Focus and we are happy to report we have new members joining the team – Margo McFarlane (Editorial), Mark Dunbar (Finance), Katy Bennett (Proofreading) and Joy Hales (Distribution). Welcome! We often receive feedback that each monthly edition is delivered late. When analysing each process within the Focus it became evident that editorial and advertising ideally needs to accept material until 7th of the preceding month in order to provide the requested time necessary to Flowbox, Printers, proof readers and distribution so, can we please ask any material comes in at the correct times so we can deliver the Focus in a timely manner, many thanks. Clubs, Societies, Organisations and Gatherings Lenham Archaeology With the sad news of the passing of Elaine Collett and too many other articles last month our Archaeology news got left out. Not that we had anything ground breaking (excuse the pun) but I will do a bit of back filling now.
18
At our AGM there was discussion as to whether LAS should continue running as numbers are falling. Andrew Rayfield announced that he was standing down as Chairman (for personal reasons) so a vacancy remains at present. Debate remains on whether we should change our name. For some time I have wondered if the name Archaeology puts some people off joining. Many of our talks (about 75%) are history anyway so the argument “Oh you are not a history society” is hardly fair comment! Historians may have missed an excellent talk in March on “Mudlarking on the Thames” and the keen ones among you just should not miss Dr Jean Stirk’s “Finding the History of your house” on April 30th. Perhaps if LAS adopted the name ‘Heritage’
Clubs, Societies, Organisations and Gatherings
the new nomenclature would cover all, even Family History. History comes under the blanket of Archaeology but Archaeology is not completely covered by the term History. History states that North America was ‘discovered’ by Columbus! Not quite correct because there were people there, millions of them, before he actually discovered it in 1492. More correct…. he was the first European to discover America? Still not correct because archaeological evidence is that the Vikings had considerable settlements on Greenland and legends that they sailed further south to what is now “New England”. There is even more evidence. Written records say that a Welshman, visiting NA with the first Europeans, claimed he could converse with the tribe of Mandan Indians! Now that particular tribe is extinct, so the historical evidence drifts into the foggy realms of myth. But there is something else … late last century the Sioux Indians demanded that the bones of all native people held in museums should be returned to them for
reburial. But archaeologists held out against that ruling as some skulls showed evidence of not being Red Indians at all and certainly not Sioux, as they showed features denoting they were of European origin! Back to the theories about the Mandan Indians! So what I am trying to explain is that archaeology has a far wider net than just the written word. As things are found out by archaeology (not necessarily by digging holes!) then that information gathered is added to the field of history. More about Heritage:I suggested in the article that got shelved that our “Lock-Up” could become a building to carry our heritage forward for all to appreciate better, here is my suggestion Richard Greenwood (and I believe John Nye) were once very keen to make the Lock-Up into a small museum. But the small room is made even smaller by an inside layer of brick reinforcing, built during WW2 as protection for a Home Guard office. As KCC said this reinforcing
should not be removed “as it was part of the history of the place”…. fair enough…. leave it in , but put a small table in the room , spread with maps an old style lamp and two life size figures complete with Dad’s army uniform and tin hats. The mock-up could be separated from viewers by a wooden screen and bars (not authentic for the lock-up but makes it more spooky!) The key to view the Lock-up could be left with willing nearby neighbours. Wall space could have a cabinet with spitfire bullets shells and mortars that we have found field walking, so the net result is a heritage exhibit …to interest many people and visitors!
19
Another feature of “Heritage” that came up recently was this:There is a Planning Application on the Conservation land behind the UR church on Maidstone Road. If the land beside the cricket field is left out of the equation there is still the added piece south of Parapet house. In my thinking Conservation land should be cared for and that bit is not! BUT if a competition were put forward for architects to design houses (mixed units ) of heritage Visit lenhamfocus.co.uk Follow us @lenhamfocus
Continued... status designs we could have a housing development nice enough to grace our conservation area, nice enough that people would wish to walk round just to admire them ! Granted it might put the selling price up a little but it is difficult to expect “affordable” housing in today’s market but one and two bed units with a few 3 beds are more sensible than detached 2-4 bed houses. Just a thought.
20
Heritage archaeology? One never knows ….there might be some under that land but I am not up to digging for it now, KCC need to organise that. Saxons here we come? Oh, I forgot to add, the talk on May 28th, 7.30 Osborne room in the Community Centre is very aptly: - “The Development of Houses” by David Carder. All welcome including nonmembers. Lenham W.I. At our March meeting we had a very interesting and amusing talk from Susan Shaw on her ‘Adventures in Peru’. Our monthly competition, which this month was: ‘something associated with Peru’, produced several incarnations of Paddington Bear, which was very fortunate, since he actually featured in the talk !! At our April meeting we had a welcome return visit from Julia Davies. This time, giving us good ideas on ‘Cooking for 1 or 2’. May sees our A.G.M. and in June we will be finding out about ‘The Life of a Japanese Lady’, from Lesley Gould. We had a very successful ‘Day School’ on April 5th .In the morning we had a Taster of Tai Chi (very relaxing!!), and in the afternoon, a talk about ‘The Flemish Weavers in Kent’ History is a lot more interesting when it is about your local area. Ladies, don’t forget, if you would like to join a friendly group, come along and try the W.I. We’re not just Jam and Jerusalem!!. Gill Simes

Thoughts & Reports Christian Easter Message May 2014 Dogs in a Manger! Some readers may be surprised to learn that, even in these days of mobile phones, the public telephone box outside Grafty Green post office is used regularly. Old fashioned coins are useless in this box. A card is the required currency. Not that this troubles the users for they are of the fourlegged variety and, like HM the Queen, they do not carry money. You have guessed it! They are dogs. I have even seen a queue. Tia, Holly and Toby are regular users. But why are they in a phone box? The reason is that they need a safe haven while their owners collect their newspapers and natter to other shoppers. There is no discrimination. All dogs, whether pedigree or mongrel are welcome to relax in the box. They are safe. Even Gus, the adored shop cat, cannot get near them!

Here are two examples: Psalm 31:1 In you Lord I have taken refuge and Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength. Notice too, the words of Jesus, Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28).

There are no KEEP OUT notices in God’s kingdom nor is there discrimination of any sort. All are welcome. Do try this place of safety. Joan Drury

Nobby, as he was known to all, was born in Lenham and went to the old primary school. He was the son of Ted and Bessie, Ted being the local barber. Norbury started his working life on the farm of Sid Cox, and then worked at Gower’s Garage. He joined the army and for two years after the war was with the REME in Hanover. He then took a job at Caffyn’s. Norbury joined the St. John Ambulance in 1958, but had been associated with it since leaving the army. It became a central part of his life. He did so much

for our Division, and only retired as Secretary in 2008. In 1965 he received the Victoria Medal, and continued to be given ‘long service’ medals. This was truly justified as he did a grand total of 12,885 duties! He was the longest serving member of our Division by far, and a familiar figure to many of us as he stood on the corner by the post office collecting for St. John. I have been told that his proudest moment, other than the arrival of Trevor, his son, was when he met Princess Anne when he was on duty. He was also thrilled at being made a Serving Brother in 1996, for service to St. John, in London. For several years he took charge of the hanging baskets at the Dog and Bear, and they were a tribute to him. His final ‘official duty’ was at the Jubilee celebrations at the Tithe Barn. What was his favourite moment? Listening and joining in with the wonderful Jasmine Kittermaster as she sang ‘We’ll meet again’. I hope we do, as Nobby was a very special man. Dr Martin Porter

Hi Ho Hi Ho it’s off to work we go! Many thanks to the willing band of workers who helped tidy up the churchyard during the morning of Saturday the 5th April. Many thanks to the willing band of workers who helped tidy up the churchyard during the morning of Saturday the 5th April.

About thirty adults and children joined forces and cut back, cleared away, mowed and trimmed the grounds and removed copious amounts of ivy from the wall; in a concerted effort to take a pride in the wonderful heritage we are fortunate enough to share in our village. It was like watching army ants, all diverging on one area, rolling up their sleeves (the helpers, not the ants!) and making a difference through team work. Community cohesion, big society, call it what you will, it works! The church coffee morning helpers generously provided some much needed refreshments for which the team were grateful and thoroughly enjoyed.
Hi Ho Hi Ho it’s off to work we go!
Apart from some lost car keys (later reclaimed) the day went off without a hitch. The churchyard was left considerably improved and the helpers pleased with their efforts. Perhaps we should consider having a spring clean at the cemetery, any volunteers? Margo McFarlane

38
Members of the public who wished to speak; Mr. Kingsley Hughes a representative of Design Scape gave a presentation on how his company could help LPC with its Neighbourhood Plan, on how much work was required of the company and how much work had already been carried out by the LPC; tentative quotes were from £10K to £17k plus. The Chairman thanked K/H for coming out to give his company’s presentation saying that the LPC would be looking for a professional company to finalise its NHP, and three quotes would be sought for the work at a later date, when all the specifications had been collated, as to what work was required. Cllr. Greenwood advised that one of the street lights was still out coming in to Groom Way via the footpath; the Chairman advised that there was still an electrical fault in the area and the Clerk had advised KHS of the ongoing problem. Dave Rowley (PCSO) reported that
Lenham Parish Council
there had been 8 reported crimes over the last month, 4 of which were Criminal Damage, which occurred in Honywood Road, Faversham Road, Lenham Heath and Cherry Close estate; D/R also advised that he had received phone calls over noise and abusive behaviour. D/R reported that the date for the Keep Lenham Safe event was Saturday 3rd May 2014 between 10-00am and 1-00pm in the Lenham Community Centre. Martin Sherwood the parishes Kent Community Warden reported that he had written an article for the Focus magazine on how to deal with door step traders. M/S reported he would try and help with the problem of dog fouling in the Churchyard by way of handing out notices on the problem at different times of the day if necessary. M/S also highlighted another computer scam that was being sent out, it is a health scam concerning White Platelets, if the attachment is opened the computer becomes infected by a virus, be aware. KCC Ward member Jenny Whittle gave her apologies for
not attending the meeting, but advised that the traffic survey for the A20 was recently undertaken and the results will be sent to her shortly; J/W will inform the LPC when she has them. J/W advised that she had also received complaints about the Southern Boundary fence at Swadelands School; she had contacted the Headmaster Mr. R. Baddeley on this and is waiting to hear from him. The Chairman opened the main meeting: Matters Arising: Planning Committee vacancy/ Chairmanship: It was agreed by full Council to leave this item over to the next meeting, it had been recommended by the Planning committee that the meetings should be chaired on a rota basis until a new chairman came forward. The minutes of the previous meeting were read through and all matters that needed action were acted upon. Reports & Spokespersons:
Committees/
Finance & General Purpose: The minutes were agreed and duly signed. Planning: Cllr. C. Gillett went through the planning reports and asked if any Councillors had any questions on the written report on the Planning meetings held on 19th March 2014 and 31st March 2014, there were no questions muted. C/G gave verbal reports on two meetings the LPC had held with potential developers, Glebe gardens and the Reform Church. Cllr. Barr wished to make a statement to the effect he had no intention of selling off the Cricket field for housing, subject to the game of cricket is still allowed to take place there.
39
Neighbourhood Plan: The LPC had agreed to advertise the meeting on the NHP at an open meeting with MBC Planners to be held on the 16th April between 2-00pm and 8-00pm at the Lenham Community Centre; the LPC hopes for a good turnout of parishioners to voice their opinions on the 1,500 houses that MBC propose to develop in Lenham up to 2031.

Groom-Way Development: Cllr. Osborn gave an update on the additional Affordable Housing for the Groom Way site; it was agreed that the LPC would write to head Planning Officer of MBC Mr. Rob Jarman and ask for his input on the proposed scheme. . Highways and Transportation: Cllr. MartĂn Jackson had circulated his monthly report, the petition requesting a 40mph on the A20 through Lenham has now been completed and Cllr. Jackson will be collecting them shortly from the shops. M/J reported that the speed equipment to survey the speed of traffic along the A20 has now been completed. Cllr. Barr requested that Cllr. Jackson investigates with KHS as to when the Old Ashford Road from the Post Office to Groom Way will be re-surfaced. Law & Order: The Chairman advised that he had nothing new to report. Web-site development: Cllr. Drylie, advised that there was not a lot to report on, Flowbox should have the web-site up and running by the end of April this year, subject to a few further tweaks to the site. Cllr. Drylie requested that Councillors go on to the web-site and inform him of

any further changes they thought would enhance the web-site. Environment: R/G advised that the dog fouling in the Churchyard would most likely be noticed at its worst on the first grass cut of the season. The grass cutting contractor had advised the Parish Clerk that he would not cut the Churchyard or Ham Lane again because of the dog fouling nuisance, because of danger to his health. It was agreed although the problem was serious there was no way the LPC could kerb the problem themselves, and it was up to the contractor to wear the appropriate clothing for the task at hand, as it must occur all over the place, not that the LPC condone the practice of owners not clearing up behind their dogs. The full Council agreed that by the contractor giving the LPC this ultimatum he had made his contract void and the Clerk will inform him of this; the LPC will use alternative grass cutting contractors until another permanent contractor is in place. Reports from Out-side meetings. Cllr. N. Godfrey had circulated his report on the Harrietsham Parish Council meeting he had attended.
KALC/ Rural Kent: The Chairman reported that the next Kent Association of Local Councils was to be held on the 7th. April, Cllr. Greenwood and he would attend.
on the LPC meetings, as I am standing down as Chairman, a role I have carried out for some 7 years, to make way for younger blood with new ideas; N. Godfrey.
This will be my final brief report

Elaine Collett I once read a quote by Thomas Campbell, it said “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die”. Truer words could not have been spoken of Elaine, a beautiful woman who had never-ending love and compassion for those around her. Both these qualities live on in her two beautiful children, Sophie & Jack who are just as special as
she is. To know Elaine was to know a true friend and I feel so blessed to have known Elaine and to have been able to count her as a friend. Elaine, You are so missed by us all xx Jemma Little Country Garden 49

Focus on Nature
50
We hear a lot about the need to save energy these days and rightly so. A similar need has conditioned the evolution of some of our wild plants, a good example being the common Stinging Nettle.. Urtica dioica. It has some intriguing and odd early local names, E.g. ‘Hidgy-Pidgy (Devon), ‘Heg-Beg’ (Scotland), and ‘Naughty Man’s Playthink’ (Somerset). As we well know, it has a stinging mechanism which is situated on the mature leaves and on part of the stems. Each stinging cell is quite large and bulbous, tapering as a hair which terminates in a point. Those hairs are hollow and the point contains silica, so is very brittle. If gently touched, the brittle portion of the hair breaks off and the residual sharp hair can penetrate skin. Pressure builds up in the bulbous base, forcing stinging liquid into the wound. But if the leaves are very firmly handled, the whole stinging mechanism is broken down. Tender-handed stroke a nettle, and it stings you for your pains: grasp it like a man of mettle, and it soft as silk remains. ‘Tis the same with common natures; Use ‘em kindly, they rebel; but be rough as nutmeg graters, and the rogues obey you well.
Focus on Nature
(anon) Such a complex system is quite energy-expensive, so it is fascinating to discover that in a large nettle colony, such as the ones I see alongside the nearby section of the North Downs Way, there is a very high density of stinging cells in the plants around the periphery of each colony, where protection is most needed. That contrasts with very few, if any such cells in the nettles of the central region where protection is unnecessary, and so a considerable energy saving is achieved. Young nettles are very rich in valuable vitamins A and C, plus minerals (iron, potassium, magnesium, sulphur), and can be cooked like spinach or made into a tasty soup. It has been recommended in some herbals for arthritic conditions and urticarial. Another much earlier use was the weaving of nettle cloth, traces of which have been found in Viking Bronze age tombs. The cloth was woven in Scotland up to the early 1900s and was found to be even more durable than linen, feeling soft and comfortable when made into blankets. Several of our wild butterflies
Cont.. use nettles on which to lay their eggs, providing their caterpillars with rich nourishment. If you see a nettle with the border of some of its leaves stitched together
with silk, forming a shelter, that is a sure sign of a Red Admiral butterfly’s handiwork. Derek Budge
Be Aware Recently a resident was telephoned by a company in the Maidstone area who sell a ‘Lifeline’ - like product. The first point of contact was a cold telephone call followed by a confirmation phone call. This seems like an approach previously used by a company selling a similar product who made a number of calls to secure an appointment for a salesman. The resident, who did not want a lifeline, made an appointment but fortunately told a neighbour before the salesman arrived. The neighbour was able to speak to the salesman who did not gain access to the resident’s home. In addition the neighbour was able to obtain details from the salesman which I have passed to Trading Standards. I would like to remind you all that if you need to obtain products or services there are a number of better ways to get them. For example through personal recommendations, your Housing Association, the Kent Trading Standards Buy with Confidence
Scheme or Age UK to name just a few. In most cases the law states that for goods valued at more than £35 the customer must be given written notice that they have 7 days to change their mind. If in doubt discuss the situation with someone you trust before committing yourself, signing anything or providing personal information.

Climate Change is Happening CLIMATE CHANGE IS HAPPENING. Pat Crawford provides the HADLOW COLLEGE COMMENT AND ADVICE COLUMN.

The thinking divide regarding employing GM technology in food production is hotting up – and becoming ever more polarised. The fundamental differences relate on the one hand to belief we shall be unable to feed the vastly expanding global population without recourse to GM - and on the other, that once the genie is out of the bottle we may lose control – with devastating results. ‘For’ or ‘against’ should be decided objectively but, bearing in mind that leading scientists back both sides of the debate, it is hardly surprising the man-in-the-street’s views are subjective. The other issue is that food producers tend to argue one way – and consumers the other. Many EU countries remain sceptical and a recent vote concerning insect- resistant maize resulted in ministers and diplomats representing 19 of the 28 countries opposing approval. Latest statistics indicate that last

year – 2013 – 18 million farmers in 27 countries grew biotech crops representing a 3% year-onyear increase. The ten countries leading biotech production each planted more than one million hectares. Most of the growers – some 90% - making use of the technology are resource short and poor. Five EU countries are reported to have planted 148,013 hectares of biotech maize last year – an increase of 18,942 hectares since 2012. This year Indonesia is expected to undertake commercial planting of the world’s first drought-resistant sugar cane. Between1996-2012, China is reported to have generated economic benefits in excess of $15 billion from biotech cotton crops; $2.2 billion was generated during 2013. The United States continues to be in the lead with 70.1 hectares converted to biotech production. Brazil ranks second with Argentina third, India fourth and Canada fifth. Bangladesh has approved a biotech eggplant developed via a
private/public partnership with an Indian company. The same country is seeking approval for Golden Rice and a biotech potato. The planting of biotech maize has been approved in Panama. Countries including Cameroon, Ghana, Egypt, Kenya, Malawi, Uganda and Nigeria are conducting trials while the Philippines are nearing completion of trials with Golden Rice.
