Welcome to the October edition of the Lenham Focus. With the summer now definitely over, no matter how much I try to keep holding on to it, it’s time to look to the autumn and winter activities. Lenham Players’ next production is The Ghost Train, a drama written by Arthur Ridley. We have another very useful article from GB Lister with a guide to the various cuts of beef. Thank you again to GB Lister for providing these and I hope our readers find them as useful as I do. For those who like to plan ahead the date for the big Lenham Christmas Light Switch On has been set as 6th December. This is always a great day and evening and I would recommend it

to anyone. Finally the planning has commenced for next year’s family festival, the date has been set as the 11th June 2016. This event takes a huge amount of work and organisation and volunteers are always needed. Any of our readers who want to get involved please attend the meeting on 29th October 7:15 in the Community Centre.

aturday 27th, venue the Lenham Community Centre, the event The Third Annual Garden Show. What a success it turned out to be, despite the crazy weather we have had over the past couple of months. The turn-out was fantastic, a third more entries than last year and the exhibitors should be congratulated on making such a great effort. I wonder what we would have achieved if the weather had been kinder to us gardeners? There was some very inventive flower arrangements, marvellous displays of flowers and plants, excellent fruit and vegetables and as for the cakes & jams what can we say - great. A show like this takes an awful lot of organising and thanks must go to Lesley Feakes and her team for arranging the show. Not forgetting the judges who had the difficult job of picking the winners. Our thanks also go to the advertisers and supporters; without their help

planning application. We have been working with residents and the Borough Council to keep people informed. We have discussed with others to give greater protection to the area around the village that surrounds the North Downs and the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We are working with the Parish Council and the Neighbourhood Plan group on the future plans for Lenham and would urge all residents to drop in during the event on Saturday 17th October at Lenham Primary School. This will be open to all and all comments regarding Lenham’s future will be most welcome. The volunteers involved are working hard to keep the community informed, and it’s important for the future direction

itter fighting was still taking place on the Western Front at Loos as on so many other war fronts. The increase in the use of high explosives brought even more trauma to trench warfare. On 30th October the Kent Messenger published a letter from ‘a young signaller’, Bombardier H. Morgan, who was determined to tell the public what was happening – though no doubt it was censored. It concluded:

‘A party of us had a few 5.9 shells over one day. The first one fell a few yards short of the house we were in and we took the warning and were in a dug out in quick time. Fifteen came and put the house out of action. We do not

realise how near we are to death at times. We go walking when three bullets will pass close to our heads. Perhaps 4 inches nearer would mean death. We do not think any more about it but still keep going on doing our little bit.’ In the same issue ‘a young maid’ on the home front was getting restless with her lot as were so many other women by this time. Her letter of complaint that her mistress had refused to give her a ‘character’ – a reference – pointed out that maids were ignored if they complained about their mistresses. It ended: ‘I know of many more maids who are looked upon as dogs but there will be a time when maids have as much chance as their mistresses. What I have written does not refer to those who know how to treat a maid.’

15th August (h) Hunton (won by 82 Runs) J Barrett and D Bunch stabilised Lenham’s batting spell with mid order scores of 68 and 51 respectively – Lenham went on to set 206 runs. Hunton lost an early wicket but then steadied with a second wicket partnership of 61. Lenham had another good day in the field with 6 catches held not allowing Hunton to set-

But in October the attention of the nation was riveted on another nurse in occupied Belgium. It was this month that Edith Cavell was arrested and shot for helping British soldiers to escape.

Daily life was hard. In Boughton Malherbe Great Humphries tle. 3rd change bowler J Ambrose made significant inroads with 5 for 29 assisted by D Bunch with 2 for 25.

Saturdays 8th August (a) Milstead (lost by 10 wickets!) Lenham batted first and set 205 for 1 with P Humphries not out on 91 and T Curtis not out on 104 – superb batting performance in any normal circumstances. Milstead however raced to the score with 17 overs remaining without loss of wicket with T Miller making 131 not out and M Annand contributing 60 not out.

Farm was selling off its livestock and machinery – including 6 fat hogs and 7 porkers. Under the new Derby Scheme which came into force this month all men between the ages of 18 and 41 were asked to attest – sign up that they would be willing to serve if called upon. More men from Lenham chose to do so. There were many signs of the war evident in the village. The sanatorium on the downs was formally opened as the Lenham Sanatorium for the Treatment of Tubercular Canadian soldiers, and the VAD detachment in the village square was in full use, with many of the nurses being Lenham residents.

22nd August (a) Rumwood (won by 98 runs) Lenham kept on trend by batting first and the runs were spread out evenly with top scores from D Bunch 38 not out and S Horton not out 46 (partnership of 79). Lenham set Rumwood 159 off the 40 overs. With the pressure on the Lenham bowlers now T Curtis certainly wasn’t phased, and he didn’t let the Rumwood batsmen settle, in his straight 9 over spell he took 6 for 23, D Gardner added 2 for 22 and Rumwood were bowled out for 61. 29th August (a) Headcorn (Won by 104 runs) Lenham batted first and set 176 for 3, with N Rutledge making 51 not out and T Curtis 64 and A Longley returning from hols to make 27. Lenham bowlers continued from the previous week’s tight bowling and didn’t allow the Headcorn batsmen to

settle. The wickets were spread out with D Bunch taking 3 for 18 with T Curtis and D Gardner taking two wickets each finishing the game in the 28th over. Sundays 9th August (h) Priory (won by 18 runs) Lenham set 213 for Priory to chase. The most significant contributions were T Curtis 60, N Rutledge 47 and D Russell 38 made on another well prepared Lenham track. Priory got off to a steady start but Lenham’s bowling and fielding were good with 4 catches being held. The wickets were shared evenly by M Rickner, J Gracie, T Curtis and J Ambrose all with 2 a piece. 16th August (a) Newington (Won by 47 runs) A lower scoring game with Lenham batting first again and setting 175 runs, T Curtis 43 and N Rutledge not out on 50 being the highest run makers for Lenham. Newington got off to a good start with an opening partnership of 56 however good bowling changes didn’t enable the

Newington batsmen to settle and they were all out for 128. J Ambrose again topped the wicket table with 3 closely followed by D Gardner, D Seaman and S Russell with 2 each. 30th August (h) Detling (lost by 82 runs) Detling batted first and made steady

progress all the way through their innings with a second wicket partnership of 84 on their way to setting a total of 211. B town scored 52 and s Norcott 50. The pick of the bowlers was A Longley with 4 for 48 off 8. In response Lenham came out and started well and matched the run rate up until the 22nd over and the

fall of the 5th wicket. Lenham tried to recover however were bowled out for 129. Pick of the Lenham batting was M Revitt on 56 and A Longley on 17. There are no games to look forward to in October so the next report will be the last for this season.

or most people, flu is an unpleasant illness, not necessarily a serious one. In people over 65 years of age and also younger people with certain medical conditions, flu could develop into a potentially serious condition. With an aging population and the unpredictability of the ‘flu season’ the best solution is a preventative one. Flu vaccination has been historically available under the NHS at clinics run by GPs but the uptake has not been satisfactory, particularly by the at-risk groups.

L

enham Parish Council recognises the valuable contribution that community organisations and projects provide to the parish. The council has for many years supported local organisations through donations and this council will continue to do so. However, during these times of public sector budget austerity, the council needs to ensure it distributes its limited funds to the best benefit to the community.

Lenham Primary School In September we welcomed back our years 1 to 6 children, and met our new parents of children in Rainbow Class and, of course, the children themselves. We also welcomed Heather Ormiston to our Senior Leadership Team, as our new Inclusion Leader, and saw the return of Mrs Green from maternity leave. Staff were very busy over the holidays improving the learning environment in the school. Mr Smith, our caretaker, has also done an amazing job painting and repairing the outside woodwork amongst many other things. This year we are going to have a whole school focus on our new school motto ‘Aspire – Aim – Advance’ and our school values.. Personal Excellence Respect & Friendship Inspiration Determination & Courage Equality & Fairness Due to our excellent past record of commitment to the Olympic Legacy we have been chosen as one the few schools in Kent to be part of the Olympic 2016 project ‘INSPIRED – Ways to Rio’ One of the lovely things about Lenham is how the children socialise across year groups. We are a country school and are fortunate enough to have lovely grounds which we want the children to access all year. At playtime the children will now go out together and have the option of field or playground. If the field is wet they will only be allowed on it if they have wellies. Children can bring in a pair of named wellies that they can keep at school so they have this choice of where to play. At the end of each term we are introducing a ‘Book Look’, where parents will be invited in before the end of the school day to look through their child’s books with them. We appreciate that many of our parents work so we will be as flexible as we can. These are informal sessions, but if you would like to make an appointment to see your child’s class teacher or a member of our Leadership Team, please make a separate appointment. t the time of writing I have recently returned from a few days away in Lindisfarne. You may know that Lindisfarne is situated on an island known as Holy Island, in the NE of England. You can only access this island by crossing the road known as The Causeway when the tide has gone out. At other times the water covers the road and you just have to wait before you can get on or come off the island. At Lindisfarne you really are dependent on the rhythm of the tides and the seasons. The season we have reached now is autumn, the time when we think about and give thanks for Harvest. We might even be thinking about the preparations for the coming season of Christmas! But it occurred to me that in New Zealand, for instance, it is Lent and Easter that coincides with autumn. In that part of the world, as they approach the season of Christmas, it is springtime! But, in our part of the world Easter is so readily associated with spring, with all its signs and symbols of new life and fresh hope. I find it quite difficult to imagine Easter as anything else. And so we all have to relax into the rhythm of the seasons wherever we might happen to be at the time. Keats described autumn here in this country as the ’season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’. With the arrival of the month of October, that season is undoubtedly on us once again. Yet, even as the autumn leaves fade and fall, and the daylight and the temperatures dim as well, God’s care remains constant over all creation, all around our world, and all through the year. There is a popular hymn by Thomas Chisholm which puts it all so beautifully

‘Summer and winter, and seedtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above, Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love’. So let’s not forget to thank God and to marvel at the rhythm of the seasons and to be grateful for His constant care and compassion. May our eyes be open to see the signs and symbols of God’s great faithfulness, mercy and love all around us which come to us new every morning. And may He guide and guard us all this new month, this new season. Amen.

Mince Mince, which is made from a variety of different cuts of beef, is very versatile and popular. It can be used in so many dishes including meat pies, bolognese, burgers, meatloaf, meatballs and curries. Depending on the recipe, mince can be cooked in many ways. Farewell to the United Reformed Church PAGE 24

Farewell

OCT 2015

Text by Jim & Amy Myers

The United Reformed Church in Maidstone Road closed its doors in 2013 and is due for demolition. The final minister was the Reverend Andrew Mills who many will remember for the numerous children’s holiday clubs he led. The cheerful photograph shown here was taken in 2012, sixty years from the date the present building was erected and 350 years from the date that the Reverend Thomas Shewell founded the first independent church movement in Lenham in 1662. He had been Lenham’s vicar but in that year had made a stand against the second stage of the current Act of Uniformity. In May that year every clergyman had to formally declare his acceptance of the revised liturgy. Thomas Shewell was one of the twelve hundred who refused to do so, preferring to resign. He chose instead to preach the gospel at his own private school. Little is known about the next hundred years or so, but by the late eighteenth century and often to much opposition, travelling preachers would give sermons in the market place. Their popularity, however, led to the establishment (through the determination of a lady from Harrietsham) of the first chapel building here in 1784. So many crowds flocked to it that the chapel had to be rebuilt in 1824 to seat 500 worshippers. This became an Ebenezer Chapel (meaning ‘stone of help’) and the original namestone is built into

the wall of the present building. In 1940 the Lenham Congregational Church, as it then was, and its school hall were completely destroyed by a bomb accidentally dropped from an Albacore biplane from 826 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, based at Detling. The aircraft was returning from a raid on Nieuport Harbour, where the bomb had failed to drop. Luckily the church and school hall were empty at the time, although Lenham resident Beryl Wiltshire remembers that her mother had a narrow escape. She was the cleaner and had only just finished her job there. Undaunted, the church continued to function and a new building opened in 1952, now the United Reformed Church. In the late 1960s two cottages standing in front of the chapel were demolished, and in their place a Memorial Garden of Remembrance was established in the early 1970s with villagers donating rose trees in memory of their loved ones. Behind the church lay its former graveyard which was in use until late in the nineteenth century.

Much of Lenham’s history will vanish with the loss of the United Reformed Church. Attitudes have changed much however since Victorian times when its minutes recorded the expulsion of a member ‘for running footraces for money’ thereby bringing ‘scandal upon the cause’ – especially as the culprit refused to promise the church that he would discontinue ‘these disgraceful activities’. Many of the names in the early Congregational Church register are still familiar in Lenham today. Only the building of the church is closing, however. The church itself continues, as members have joined Jubilee Church and are still meeting locally. Jenny Needham, an enthusiastic member, adds ‘The new opportunities through our link with Jubilee are already having an impact on village life, for example the creative arts students helping at the Lenham family festival.’ For more information about upcoming activities contact Dave or Jenny on 850266

Traveller’s Joy Over the hills and far away, The Road is long on a summer day: Dust glares white in the noontide heat, But the Traveller’s Joy grows strong and sweet, Down the hollow and up the slope, It binds the hedge with a silken rope. R Marriott- Wilson

nother of my favourite wild climbing plants was in bloom since late August and will continue to be prominent for some months to come, namely, the Wild Clematis ... Clematis Vitalba. It was necessary to examine it quite closely, in order to spot the insignificant greenish white flowers among the handsome, thickly massed clusters of compound leaves. In the last century it was not very common in Kent but now it seems to be flourishing along many of our hedgerows. In the local woods it can grow to quite large proportions, often trailing its long twisting stems from trees, reminding me of the Lianas, or plant ‘ropes’, which seemed to form such a convenient means of high speed transport in the splendid old Tarzan films. The generic name derives from the Greek ‘Klema’ ... tendril, and the species name is a Latin composite, ‘Vitis’ ... vine, and ‘albus’ ... white. At first, it seems surprising that it is classified within the family Ranunculaceae, but as the year moved into October, the fruits began to form, comprising a group of dry achenes, just as seen in the Buttercups; however, those of the Wild Clematis are rather special. Each fruit is covered with fine hairs and attached at the tip is a long, feathery

white plume providing a highly effective parachute, resulting in a wide dispersal by even a gentle wind. Some of our hedgerows will soon be smothered with these fruits, from which derives the popular name of ‘Old Man’s Beard’. In fact, as in other wild plants bearing the name Old Man, there are more sinister associations with the Devil. In some counties, local herbals give names such as ‘Devil’s Twisters’ and ‘Devil’s Guts’, referring to the way that the tightly twisting stems can sometimes actually strangle a young tree. As usual, the early Christian bishops frowned on such names and more acceptable substitutes appeared, such as ‘Maiden’s Hair’ and ‘Virgin’s Bower’. From Kent appeared the names ‘Boy’s Bacca’ and ‘Gypsy’s Bacca’, presumably referring to the descriptions of German shepherds cutting older, hollow stems to be used as pipes, the acrid flavour of the bark supposedly enhancing the

tobacco smoke, also appreciated by some English schoolboys in the last century! There is a strange French name for the plant ... ‘Herbe aux Gueux’, the latter word translating as ‘beggars’. The fresh leaves being somewhat corrosive, were apparently used by French beggars, who applied them to their skin, including wounds, used to generate compassionate gifts! When winter begins to close in, the glistening, snowytufted fruit will become very conspicuous against a drab background and it often appears as if the hedgerows are festooned with large cobwebs. At such times, this distinctive plant richly deserves its most appropriate and delightful name ...TRAVELLER’S JOY

Snowdon for Charity by Janet Flisher

This was the day Norman Ellams, Janet & Dave Flisher had decided was the day to conquer Snowdon with a combined age of 187! This was not going to be a walk in the park. The morning began slightly chilly but bright after an hour’s drive they were on their way, Janet & Norman with walking sticks, Dave with his trusty umbrella. The walk to the Lanberis pass was quite steep (they all secretly wondered if they had made a good decision). Their journey began, the scenery was amazing (Dave’s words!), the rolling hills going from light to dark green with each passing cloud. The sun was out and the weather looking good, a clear view from the top was all that was needed, at the half way point there is a small cafe where drinks and a much needed toilet can be found. After a short break they were off, meeting a lot of people doing the walk for various

reasons: fun, because they can and charity. Talking to a group of people about the reasons for their walk to raise money for Cancer Research, they discovered they were from the local council. They were doing all the Snowdon walks to update their information; each had cameras and videos and recorded a piece from Norman, Janet and Dave to go on their promotional video for future visitors of Snowdon. Wow! Didn’t expect that! The terrain was rocky and full of slate, becoming quite steep now, with walking sticks and umbrella in hands they set off chatting all the way about anything that sprang to mind, people watching became a hot topic. Finally they reached the bridge only a mile to the summit, the temperature was changing, a wind and chill in the air. Dave said it was ok if it rained, he could use his umbrella!! Norman said even Mary Poppins couldn’t do that, it would be too windy! Just then Norman realised he had lost his knob. They could see the summit, it looked a long

way off the climb was getting steep, the landscape dramatic, amazing (Dave said). At the summit pictures were taken, a bottle of wine found its way into their possession and they all felt happy to have climbed so high. After a short break the descent began. At the bridge Janet shouted she had found Norman’s knob, this was put back at the end of the walking stick, the day was saved. There were several people who had started at the same time who were nowhere near the top. This made all three happy to know age is no barrier but determination and a good reason is all you need. Norman Ellams, Janet & Dave Flisher would like to thank everyone for the generous sponsorships, the money is going to Cancer Research so we can all keep our friends and family with us for longer. This walk was for all friends and family of everyone affected by Cancer. Thank you.

OCT 2015 Someone once said, “A week can be a long time in politics.” We sent the first draft of our Neighbourhood Plan to Maidstone Borough on 2nd April and we’ve waited patiently until the end August for their official response. A community neighbourhood event will take place at Lenham Primary School from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, 17th October. It will provide new information on the Plan, let you air your views and we’ll have some entertainment for young and old. We want to be able to show everyone, in pictures and maps, just what could be in store for future generations. We could leave everything to the planners and live with the consequences OR …. take this opportunity to build our vision for the parish, not just our village but our hamlets and our landscape, to protect what is precious, to rejuvenate, improve and enhance where possible. We want to hear more from you about the types of houses you want, where you want them, open spaces, play-‐areas, parking, the countryside and heritage, and how you see the parish developing. Everyone, young and old, is invited to attend between 10am and 3pm and we will have competitions and amusements available for children and adults alike throughout the day. This is your chance to catch up, ask questions and make proposals for our future; not just for the next few years but for future generations. If you live in Lenham because you love Lenham then you’ll want to be there. Look out for posters and for more information. See you on the 17th October. The Neighbourhood Plan Team

The emphasis was on improvement of skills and enjoyment of the game of football. After the coaching and lunch a few friendly matches took place and trophies were presented at the end of the day.
