Kent Orchards for Everyone at Cherry Downs
What a wonderful morning it was when some Lenham residents joined me and Simon Ginnaw, a local naturalist on a Dawn Chorus walk from Cherry Downs via Warren street and Lenham chalk cliffs. We were so privilege to hear or see 23 different birds, a whitethroat sang its heart out to us at Warren Street, yellow hammers welcomed us and linnets gave us a wonderful flying display. To end, a Mistle thrush landed on Cherry Downs picnic site as most people had left, it looked quite at home. The sky that morning was stunning and the scent from the bluebells were so intoxicating as we passed the wood above Lenham Chalk Cliffs. A botanical specialist working with Plantlife has suggested that if we bottled the complex scent of the native bluebell each of these fruity notes of lemon, cooking apple, mango and lychee, spiced up with dashes of ginger, eucalyptus and lemongrass, and then given a very earthy tone with a dose of fresh mown grass lends a different fragrance ‘note’ to the scent. What a lovely link to our orchards; bluebells and fruit. Forthcoming Events:
Wild Flowers and Cherries Celebration at Cherry Downs Sunday 10th July, 2016 at 1.00pm – 5.00pm event free ‘Kent Orchards for Everyone’ and ‘Save our Magnificent Meadows’ at Cherry Downs will be celebrating the wonderful wildflower meadow and legacy of Grants Morella Cherry Brandy, with the Steam Punk Morris dancers. There will be many activities and walks for everybody on the day and maybe tastings of that tipple which was once crafted in Lenham. Come and enjoy.
Have you Gone Batty or Enjoy a Flutter? Wednesday 24th august, 2016 at 8.00pm – 10.00pm event free Discover what bats are flying at Cherry Downs whilst their food source is being trapped. Do we have the privet hawk moth flying on Rayners Hill? Join us to discover what is living in your orchard. To find out more check out our website www.kentorchards.org.uk or go on to our Facebook page Kent Orchards for Everyone.
