All You Need to Know: Security Systems & Cost The best type of alarm for your home depends on your personal preferences, your budget, where you live, what your home is like and what level of protection you need. There are so many options available, so we have created a bite-sized double-page explaining the market place today.
EQUIPMENT
EQUIPMENT
Wireless or Wired Burglar Alarm
Bells-only alarm system & smoke detectors
—— Wireless alarms are generally easier to install and can be removed more easily if you move house, however, they can be more expensive. —— Wired systems are less likely to have power failure, however, they require a lengthy installation with high labour costs.
EQUIPMENT
Maintenance —— Regular maintenance should highlight and reduce defects as well as tackle any problems with false alarms. —— The system should be checked at least once a year to meet some insurance requirements (Two if you want a police-monitoring contract). —— Be sure to check what’s actually included; there are different levels of maintenance, such as free call outs or parts included.
Alarm & Installation Cost: £1000-£2000 Yearly Maintenance Cost Including Parts: £150-£200

Security Service Brochure
—— A bells-only alarm system makes a loud noise when triggered, hopefully alerting someone in the area to the situation and/or scare off an intruder. —— Unlike a monitored alarm, it won’t automatically contact a named person or the police, so there is no guarantee that anything will be done. —— Smoke detectors require regular maintenance checks and can fail without warning. The fire brigade may install them for free if you qualify.
EQUIPMENT
Key-holder monitoring —— A key-holder will be contacted in the event of activation. —— They must be within 20 minutes of the house, be able to drive and have access to the house. —— It’s your responsibility to keep the alarm company up to date with their details, and suggest alternatives if they are away.

RESPONSE
RESPONSE
Police response (£30/month)
Fire Brigade response (£5-10/ month)
—— The Police will respond to monitored systems from an SSAIB approved installer. A URN number will be issued on installation for a small charge. —— The Metropolitan Police say that a massive 92% of all alarm activations nationally in recent years have been false alarms; if there are three false alarms in 12 months you’ll be struck off the police response register. —— Paying for this service won’t guarantee the police will come out, however, it is usually more cost affective than a private guaranteed response.
RESPONSE
Guaranteed private response (£275/year) —— Private guarding companies guarantee a response in the event of activation. Regulations are such that they must do so within one hour. —— The yearly charge is a retainer for holding your keys; an additional call out charge and hourly rate will be applicable in the event of a response. —— Using a private company is the only way to guarantee a response for intruder alarms; however it is usually a costly option.
”
—— The Fire Brigade will respond to smoke alarms installed by companies that meet the Regulatory Reform (Fire Saftey) Order. —— As of the 1st January 2014, the fire brigade introduced charges of £360 for attending persistent false alarm calls generated by automatic fire alarm systems; avoid charges with regular maintenance checks. RESPONSE
Medical Emergency Monitoring & response (£15-30/month) —— Telecare companies will contact a nominated key-holder, local paramedic or ambulance service in the event of a medical emergency. —— The level of service and response will depend on your living arrangements and personal circumstances. —— Be sure to check what is available to you as some companies offer discounts to suit your financial circumstances and health conditions.
QUICK TIP
We advise that you consider the ongoing cost implication of having a monitoring alarm system with a guaranteed response. The
Total Yearly Monitoring Cost Including Urn Number:
average life of an alarm system is 7 years, which could equate to £8,000-10,000.

Frequently Asked Questions Q. When will the alarm be installed? A. We offer all of our customers an AM or PM installation slot. With an AM slot, the engineer will arrive anytime between 8am and 12pm. With a PM slot, the engineer will arrive anytime between 12pm and 4pm. An installation date will be given when your order is placed and the 20% deposit has been paid. Q. Can I take the system with me if I move? A. Providing that we cover the area you are moving to, yes. With all monitoring and response packages we include one free install when moving home. An engineer will remove the alarm system, and re-install it into your new property the same day. Q. What happens if I have an extension built or have new doors or windows fitted? A. As our systems are wireless, existing detectors can be moved easily, and new devices can be added. If you are having any modifications to your property, give us a call and we will assist you personally. Q. Can I have the alarm on when I am at home? A. Yes. The alarm system can be set to have certain zones or sensors omitted in order to provide protection from intrusion whilst you’re at home. In addition, any panic button or smoke detector will work whether the system is set or un-set.

Q. Will my system interfere with my existing telephone and/or broadband connection? A. No. We install a hard-wired ADSL filter as standard, so there is absolutely no interference with your telephone line or your broadband connection. Q. What range do the wireless devices have? A. The devices have an uninterrupted range of 100 metres. This can be substantially boosted with the installation of a repeater. Q. Will my system false alarm? A. The vast majority of false alarms are due to poor installation or inferior equipment. As MyHome only use fully qualified SSAIB installers and equipment of the highest quality, we have one of the lowest false activation rates available. In addition to this, the MyHome engineer will give a detailed demonstration of how to use the system and will not leave until you are 100% happy and confident on how to use the system. Q. What happens if I accidentally set the alarm off? A. Simply press the unlocked padlock to reset the system. If this is done within 90 seconds, no further action is required. Otherwise, we will contact you and ask for your password.
Q. What happens if I forget my password? A. Contact MyHome immediately. We will ask you a series of security questions to reset your password. Q. What happens if there is a power cut? A. The MyHome control panel has a backup battery that lasts for at least 8 hours (more likely 20 hours). This will recharge automatically when the power returns. If the power cut is a particularly long one and the battery should start to run low, the system will advise us and we will contact you. If you are unavailable, we will contact your key holders. Q. Why do I need to provide the details of two key holders for my monitored alarm? A. The police require at least 2 key holders. Neither of the key holders can live at the property where the alarm is installed and
“
they must not reside together. It is also a requirement that you provide a landline telephone number for your key holders as well as a mobile number, if available. Q. How do I change my key holders details? A. It’s simple. Just call MyHome on 0333 789 0111 with your changes. Make sure to tell your key holders what to do in case they receive a call from us. You need to confirm the changes in writing. Q. What happens if I recommend a friend? A. To recommend a friend or family member, call us on: 0333 789 0111. MyHome, as a company that grows on recommendations; once an order is installed, we will reward you with a £200 M&S voucher gift
