Fashion Pieces You Should Buy Second-Hand

The fast fashion cycle has caused a lot of damage to our planet and vulnerable populations. Fashion companies that prioritize keeping up with every trend and putting out different items every week create wastefulness and exploitative work practices.

The problem with fast fashion in a nutshell: when new pieces are created every week by fashion companies despite their current, unsold inventory, companies generate a lot of greenhouse gasses and use massive amounts of water and energy.

To maintain the constant production of new clothing, they outsource the production of clothing to poverty-stricken countries. Companies are able to pay them extremely low wages for their extreme work hours.

Sustainable brands usually have a higher price point. Their ethical compass prevents them from using exploitative production means, and therefore more expensive models of production come into play. If you’re strapped for cash, don’t turn to fast fashion. Instead, consider buying secondhand!

STATEMENT PIECES

In general, a secondhand shop is a perfect place to find statement pieces because nothing makes you stand out quite like a vintage or one-of-akind piece. An option for statement pieces are vintage or one-of-a-kind clothing items, such as vintage dresses, coats, or jackets. These pieces can be great conversation starters and add a unique touch to your wardrobe. When shopping secondhand, be on the lookout for quality fabrics and unique details, such as beading, embroidery, or intricate patterns.

LEATHER JACKETS/COATS

Although the aspect of the leather jacket might not align with your ethics or your budget, there are many leather jackets and coats that have been made to last years and are currently sitting in a thrift store waiting to live a whole, new life. Especially if you live in a climate where the colder season doesn’t last very long, buying a brand new leather jacket might not be worth it for a few outfits.

Check your local Goodwill or small business thrift store for a leather jacket or coat. If you can’t find your style in the women’s section, check out the men’s section, and vice versa.

DENIM JEANS

I imagine most people on the planet have a pair of jeans; a good pair is a staple item. Unfortunately, denim jeans are one of the least eco-friendly clothing items to produce due to the many chemicals and massive amounts of energy and water used to process the material. With the vast amount of styles in denim jeans, consumers will continue to purchase them brandnew. Don’t follow the hoards! You can buy jeans secondhand. Finding an original pair of vintage Levi’s is a big part of what makes thrifting so fun and special. Current denim trends, including mom jeans, bell bottoms, flared jeans, and low-rise jeans, are styles that have been recycled from past decades, so a second-hand store is sure to have a variety of these styles.

SWEATSHIRTS

Sweatshirts are not only a staple piece because they are comfortable, but also because you can find one that’s one of a kind. Just like jeans, finding a vintage sweatshirt with a cool phrase or a concert promotion from the 80s makes the garment so much more special than a brand new, mass-produced sweater. The thick material makes them last for a long time, so there are hundreds of vintage sweatshirts to be found at a thrift store.

The cycle of fast fashion has negatively affected large populations of people and our environment in many ways. Companies’ attempts to cater to every single trend are not worth the strain on garment workers and the Earth.

With a fashion culture that has become dependent on capitalism and the fast fashion cycle, living a life completely independent from these cycles can be difficult to achieve, but certainly not impossible. Luckily, there is an affordable way to avoid fast fashion by shopping secondhand. Just as eating healthier can require transitioning into the lifestyle, contributing to sustainable practices can also be accomplished step-by-step.

Eight Labels You Can Be Proud to Own

Thelabels we have in society are limitless. Some are ones that we’d be honored to have bestowed upon us, like Most Popular or Homecoming King and Queen. Then there are the labels that make us sound priggish and an outcast from society. However, times are changing, and so are the implications of those labels. Here are just a few that you can be proud to own:

Never Been Kissed

At first glance, having this label might make a person feel like they are prudish and unattainable. However, I believe this title elevates them above others because their priorities lie in things like family, career, education, or something else that gives them a sense of purpose. Never having been kissed puts them above others because they prove they have the power of discernment and control over their lives and goals. Nothing is more empowering than being able to focus on oneself.

Early Bird

“Early bird” used to make a person sound like they always followed a strict and timely schedule and were rarely swayed from their path by serendipity. In other words, boring and orderly. But I disagree entirely; a person should feel proud to have this title because it means that they show not only eagerness but also respect, something that is becoming increasingly difficult to come by in others. People should be jealous of those who arrive at a party on time and even try to be early birds themselves.

Bookworm

There will always be people burying their noses in a book, whether at the lunch table, on the sidewalk, or before bed. Their house might even come closer to looking like an actual library than a home. Still, with every book read, they’ve had an encounter with hundreds of different personalities, explored the consciousness of countless characters, and are in possession of endless knowledge. Plus, it goes without saying that they can impress others at cocktail parties with cool words like “octameter-acatalectic.” Bookworms might just be the most surprising and exciting people out there, and they should be proud to consider themselves so.

Old Soul

Few would consider being called “an old soul” a compliment because it seems to neglect their youth, vitality, and energy. Yet, one should be proud to have this title because it proves that they have a unique and unmatched spirit in the modern world. Old souls hold others’ respect because they are seen as wise beyond their years and have lived many lives before this one. Their transcendent spirit is alive with insight that sees into the past, present, and future. One can only hope to come across an old soul in our young, sensationalized generation who understands their own existence in the universe better.

Romantic

A romantic is someone with their head in the clouds, living in an imaginative world where everything is unrealistic and unattainable. At least, that’s what people used to think. To be a romantic is not impractical—it’s actually visionary because that means they haven’t lost passion and affection in life. Being a romantic means looking at the world with a glass half-full rather than halfempty, an optimism that will help them overcome all of life’s toils and troubles.

Clean-Freak

Being called a clean freak resonates with being a nag, draining, or obsessive with keeping the status quo. However, once you meet a clean freak, you’ll appreciate them in ways words cannot even describe. Clean freaks possess a special ability to plan for the future, often offsetting present pleasures in lieu of creating an easy morning routine. Folding clothes, dusting the side table, washing dishes, and mopping the floor all show them to be pristine and caring for their belongings, and they are always prepared and eager for a friend to visit.

Call them a thrifter or a brand designer, fashion-freaks make their own trends to stand out. They might add something unique to an existing style or create an entire wardrobe not yet seen by the public. Fashion freaks always used to be shunned for their inability to fit in, but now, confidence is in, and they might just be one of the few that speak that language. It’s time for all of us to embrace who we are and not be afraid to express our inner fashion freak.

There should be no shame in having a strong attachment to the first relationship you’ve ever had: the relationship with your parents. In fact, a person’s ability to maintain close ties with their parents shows their ability to have trust, gratitude, and an emotional connection in relationships. To be appreciative of parents is one thing- but to have a special bond with them is a love that will last a lifetime. Why not be proud of having something so special?

It’s normal for writers to experience self-doubt and a lack of confidence. They ask themselves if their writing is good enough, or if they’re good enough to write. But one of the biggest questions writers ask is how do I know I’m a writer? When can someone call themselves a writer, especially a good one? If this question constantly nags you—if you want to pinpoint what makes a writer—here are a few things to remind yourself.

Writers Discipline Themselves with Their Habits

If you maintain a strong writing habit, working to achieve small goals every day and disciplining yourself to keep writing even when the words won’t come, then you can call yourself a writer. Not every writer is a book writer. You can still call yourself a writer even if you create articles, blog posts, or other forms of non-creative writing. This applies to any type of writing because all writers should strive for a disciplined routine.

You can still call yourself a writer. But what if life is hectic? If you make writing a priority, if you strive to keep a writing habit and push yourself toward your goals, then your discipline sets you apart then someone who just writes for fun. You might not feel confident, especially if you miss a writing day, but the key is moving forward, disciplining yourself to get back on your feet.

Good writers know that they will never stop learning how to write well. Any type of writing has its own technique and skill that you need to recognize, and even if you have writing talent, that doesn’t mean you don’t have to practice the skills that make good writing. You can call yourself a writer if you keep looking for something new to learn or actively trying to improve on what you’ve already learned. You may not have the confidence every day, but writers don’t let that stop them.

No matter what type of writer you are, you need to write a lot. You see where you can improve, and you have an idea of what you should write next, and you learn a new skill that you can’t wait to practice. Then you get to writing. How else are you going to get better at your craft? Remember that writers take the time to write, just like they would practice in any other field. If you’re worried you’re not becoming a writer, remember that writers write. It won’t always be good, but it’ll be something. Soon you’ll notice that you’re developing those habits.

So remember you can call yourself a writer and a creative even if you’re staring at a blank screen. Remind yourself that you are working on improving your craft and you’re putting in the time and effort to make yourself a better writer. You may not feel confident in your writing abilities every day, but you have what it takes to think of yourself as a writer.

The Female Revolution: A Personal Perspective

23-year-old woman, I have witnessed firsthand the changes and progress that have been made in terms of gender equality over the course of my lifetime. From learning about the women's liberation movement of the 1970s to experiencing the #MeToo movement of the 2010s, it is clear that we are in the midst of a female revolution.

But despite these challenges, I remain hopeful and optimistic about the future. I believe that we are on the cusp of a true female revolution, and that women are poised to make even greater gains in the coming years. I see this revolution as a personal mission, and I am committed to doing my part to create a more equitable and inclusive world for all.

One way I am doing this is by supporting and promoting the work of women in leadership roles. This includes advocating for policies that promote gender equality in the workplace, and supporting women-led businesses and organizations. It also includes simply acknowledging and celebrating the achievements of women who are breaking through glass ceilings and making a difference in their fields.

Another way I am contributing to the female revolution is by challenging and changing cultural expectations and assumptions about gender roles. This includes questioning

One such place is Iran, where women have been at the forefront of a movement for change and progress.

In recent years, women in Iran have faced a range of challenges, including discrimination, repression, and violence. Despite these challenges, women in Iran have shown remarkable resilience and determination, and have played a key role in advocating for change and progress.

One notable example of this is the Women's Rights Movement in Iran, which has been at the forefront of the fight for gender equality in the country. This movement, which includes both women and men, has worked to raise awareness about the challenges and discrimination faced by women in Iran, and has advocated for change at the legislative and societal levels.

By working together and supporting one another, we can create a more equitable and inclusive world for all. As a visual artist from Berlin, I reflect my environment in different ways. In addiction to abstract painting and collages, photography to me is magnetic. In a very intimate photo session with the German dancer Rebecca Seebacher, I created intimate portraits without focusing too much on the dancing.

Through my coloring I go further in the direction of abstraction of reality and dissolve the border to painting in order to reduce the narrative "human" in my series to the essential. Designer: An Interview with Marika D'Auteuilww

Marika D'Auteuil, a makeup artist turned AI creator, is a woman of many talents. With a background in makeup and a passion for technology, she has found a unique way to merge the two and create stunning AIpowered makeup editorials.

When asked about her transition from makeup artist to AI fashion designer, Marika explains that she has not made a complete transition. Instead, she sees them as two creative mediums that blend well together and allow her to explore her imagination in separate ways. "I have not transitioned from one to the other. They are two creative mediums that mix well together and allow me to explore my imagination in different ways. What I like above all is to create beautiful universes and beautiful visuals, and both give me the opportunity to do so," states Marika D'Auteuil.

Marika's background in makeup has certainly influenced her design process with AI technology. She says that the images she generates with AI reflect the style and signature that she has as a makeup artist, with lots of contrast, texture, and duality. With over a decade of experience in the fashion photography industry, Marika knows what appeals to her and is able to easily translate this into her AI designs.

Marika walks us through her process for creating an AIpowered makeup editorial. She starts with a theme that inspires her and explores it through trial and error until she finds a world she likes. From there, she plays with the details to create different images and a story that holds together.

To ensure that the AI technology enhances, rather than detracts from, the final look and feel of the editorial, Marika says it's all about balance. Her experience in the field gives her an eye for good taste in themes that can sometimes be hard to master. She emphasizes the importance of details, from the environment to the model, styling, hairstyle, makeup, and lighting, to achieve a harmonious result.

Working with AI technology in the realm of editorial makeup design comes with its own set of challenges, such as the realism of computer-generated makeup and texture issues. Marika acknowledges that the technology is still novel and has its limits, but she is confident that it will evolve quickly. "The technology is new, and I find that computer-generated makeups are not, at the moment, as realistic as hairstyles and clothes, for

example. A lot of issues with texture I would say. And we must not forget that the images produced may seem photorealistic, but in the end, they are digital illustrations. Naturally, technology has its limits too. It should evolve pretty fast... "After all, I'm training the machine day and night," she laughs.

One of the biggest challenges Marika faces as an AI fashion designer is making the models appear as realistic as possible, including their hands, which are particularly hard to get right. She sees the future of AI in the fashion industry as an opportunity to reduce waste and make fun designs more accessible and inclusive.

When it comes to ethical considerations in AI fashion design, Marika believes that there will need to be regulations and frameworks put in place, particularly for commercial purposes. "I believe this is a slippery subject at the moment." Brands will need to be transparent about their use of AI, and people will want to know the authenticity of what they are seeing. "People won't want to constantly question the authenticity of what they are seeing."

Marika's design process, from concept to final product, is entirely computer-generated, with AI involved from start to finish. She is even testing incorporating her makeup images into the equation to have digital versions of them. Marika thinks that AI fashion design will be a gamechanger for traditional fashion designers, allowing them to create realistic moodboards and explore different possibilities with ease.

For those interested in trying out AI fashion design, Marika recommends playing with programs like Dall-e, Midjourney, or Stable Diffusion. She encourages any artist who loves technology to give it a try, calling it a fun and incredible creative tool.

Despite her love for AI fashion design, Marika says that makeup will always be her first love. She values the human connection that comes with being a makeup artist and will always choose it over the machine, saying, “Makeup is my first love and it allows me to create and express myself, work with fantastic teams, create beautiful images and travel the world. I'll always choose the human proximity before the machine.”

Eugenio Marongiu is a Milanbased commercial lifestyle photographer with 15 years' experience in the field.

Although his focus is not specifically on fashion, he has worked at fashion shows, captured street fashion, and taken backstage shots during fashion weeks in Milan. He has a keen interest in innovations and the crypto NFT field and was blown away when he discovered the world of image generation from text via AI. He has since applied his knowledge and aesthetic taste to create portraits of twins with an editorial slant.

When asked about the focus of his work, Marongiu says that he creates editorials and that his main focus is on diversity, which is also the common thread in his photographic work, saying, "I think I create editorials, and my focus is mainly on diversity because it is also the common thread in my photographic work." He works on style, shape, ethnicity, gender, age, and location and uses Midjourney with the premium plan to have more hours with the fast option, virtually unlimited production, and the possibility of marketing the images. Marongiu admits that although he researches everything to the best of his ability, he also lets the randomness of AI image creation do its work. His biggest challenge is to find the right idea and build the right prompt. It is easy to get an image by writing random words, but getting what one has precisely in mind is not so easy. He often changes a word, moves a comma, modifies some parameters, and tries again until he gets what he wants. He says that the prompt is the key to this new world of expression, and unveiling it is like a chef unveiling a secret recipe. "I must admit that although everything is researched to the best of my ability—because that is the key to distinguishing and carrying out a true project—I also let the randomness of AI image creation do its work. "Version 4 of Midjourney works wonders, and I dare not imagine what it will be able to do in future updates!" states Marongiu.

Marongiu believes that AI will not change photography yet but is just getting started. The speed of development is incredible, and new figures will be born while some disappear. There will be no more limits, and incredible things can be invented. He believes that stylists, make-up artists, hair stylists, designers, and photographers with an extra edge will benefit from this new technology.

Marongiu's work has been well received on Instagram, where he has a growing profile with lots of shares, likes, comments, and messages. He sees AI image creation as a new medium close to photography, and the difference is not the means but the idea. He believes that it is important to study the platforms and software that allow one to create images so that one has one more weapon that one can use in creating an artistic or commercial project.

Marongiu's work in general sees a reworking of reality where imperfection is further emphasized. He sees AI image creation as a new avenue for artistic and commercial projects, and one that allows for more creativity and commitment. He prefers those who make an effort, not those who want a ready-made meal!

Artificial intelligence (AI) integration is becoming more prevalent as the fashion business develops. AI is transforming the fashion industry in previously unthinkable ways, from creating garments to planning fashion shows.

A fashion designer who has been at the forefront of this movement recently gave me the chance to chat with her. Barbara Reggazi, known as Bibi Uff in the AI community, has been a successful fashion designer for the past 20 years, but it was her curiosity and enthusiasm for AI that inspired her to investigate this cutting-edge technology.

When questioned about her sources of inspiration, the designer said that they frequently include both conscious and unconscious study. She finds inspiration in popular artists, musicians, and designers like Alexander McQueen. She is especially inspired by the visual work of directors like Kubrick, Wes Anderson, and the Wachowski sisters.

The Futuristic Vision of Bibi Uff for the World of Fashion

She combines many AI programs, such as Photoshop and Midjourney, to make her designs. With the use of these tools, she is able to give life to and realize her ideas. She acknowledges that there are some restrictions when it comes to integrating AI in fashion design, but she is continuously experimenting with new tools and methods to push the envelope of what is feasible.

The fashion designer also discussed the impending AI fashion show, which in her opinion will be a powerful and forceful demonstration of what is possible when AI and fashion come together. She was unable to provide many specifics about the event, but she did say that a sharp group located in New York will be in charge of organizing it.

The capacity to rapidly do research and produce a visual panel to generate a full collection is one of the most

important advantages of employing AI in fashion design. With AI, a designer may incorporate their studies into whole looks and produce an atmosphere that goes beyond simple attire.

The designer expressed optimism that AI might transform the sector, which she believes is starting to get a little stale, when questioned about the future of AI in fashion. She thinks that applying AI to the fashion industry could result in new insights and approaches to researching fashion trends.

The designer also revealed that she routinely posts updates about her work on Instagram and that she is looking forward to working with businesses to bring her AI fashion creations to life. She is aware that finding the appropriate words to describe particular pieces might be difficult and that applying AI in the fashion industry can be difficult. She is intrigued by the possibility of utilizing AI to produce innovative and captivating designs, though.

The designer then discussed working with different artists and the most fascinating project she has undertaken so far: 3D+AI. She is continually looking into new partnerships with publications, photographers, and businesses to push the boundaries of what is currently achievable with AI in fashion design while she waits for an AI that can be converted into 3D.

In summary, the adoption of AI in the fashion sector is a fresh and intriguing development that has the potential to completely alter the way we see clothing. It will be exciting to see how this trend develops over the next few years. This designer is just one of many who are investigating the potential of utilizing AI in fashion design.

This collection is inspired by the theme of an international show I presented for Davines where my main character is searching for a better world. In his search, he was transported to a far off world where all is whole and dreamlike.

Everything sparkles, shines and emanates light and everyone is a protagonist. He realizes that we are all connected by the ‘Big Bang’ theory and we all come from those initial cells from the very first explosion.

Searching for differences between us is futile, we all come from the same cells generated by that ‘Big Bang’ explosion.
