Talks The Winchesters & Artistry

cience fiction first dominated television in the early 2000’s. More than twenty years later, the genre still has viewers obsessed. It’s not a surprise that “The Winchesters” ranked as CW’s most-watched debut this fall. A spin-off of the hit show “Supernatural”, the new series is a prequel that tells the story of John and Mary Winchester during the 70s.

As much as young viewers are obsessed over the hybrids and monsters that have infiltrated the media, many of these shows in the past have lacked diversity and centered around a mainly white circle of characters. Nida Khurshid stars as Latika in “The Winchesters”, a hunter-in-training part of the core group. “[Latika] is very much the brains of the operation right now,” Khurshid explains, “She's a really big asset to routine, but she's really trying to figure out her part. Does she need to actually fight to be a hunter, or can she continue supplying information?” A fan of “Supernatural” herself, the actress remembers what it was like acquiring this part. “It was unbelievable when I first got the call. It was wild from day one because this was exactly the sort of show I would want to be on. I mean, I love “Supernatural” and shows in general that have that theme. I love when you can escape through magic on television and movies and still have characters that have so much heart to them.”

Khurshid’s own affinity for the fantasy and science-fiction world brought to life by shows and books helped shape the woman she envisions Latika to be. Her character on “The Winchesters” contains elements from both J.K. Rowling’s Hermoine Granger and Keira Knightley’s portrayal of Elizabeth Swann from “The Pirates of the Caribbean '' franchise. Well versed in the genre, Khurshid knows the draw to the magical world so many fans feel. These werewolves and mythical beasts find strength in what makes them stand out. “They're using what makes them feel different as something that is going to change the world for the better,” Khurshid explains.

Khurshid is extremely honored to represent her Pakistani heritage on the show. Citing Alia Bhatt and Mindy Kaling as some of the few women who served as South Asian representation to her, Khurshid acknowledges that the lack of diversity in the entertainment industry was a draw for her. “I love creating, and I want to be a familiar face to people who are watching television,” the actress says. Finding the balance between representing Latika’s background without letting her ethnicity define her was a challenge made easier with the help of showrunner and writer Robbie Thompson. Khurshid praises the creators of “The Winchesters” for their collaborative spirit, allowing her to come on board in the process of bringing Latika to life. With parents who experienced The Partition of India, it was important to think about how the character’s heritage shaped her into who she became. Khurshid describes Latika as, “a pacifist, and she is a pacifist for many reasons, but one of them is because her dad grew up talking about the war and it was something that really deeply affected him. [Latika] doesn't want violence to be the thing that solves problems.” As a character who

operates logistically rather than hunting out the demons that threaten humanity, Khurshid explains Latika’s actions with the Pakistani experiences of her family. In a sense more apparent on-screen, Khurshid knows that her character is also just “a brown girl in the south in 1972 just trying to fit in.”

Nida Khurshid relates to Latika in that sense, by immigrating herself to a small town in Texas from Pakistan. The arts were a way for Khurshid to express herself, noting that she was very shy in the environment she grew up in. Her mother could see the need that Khurshid had to release something in her, and enrolled her five-year-old in ballet classes. Dance is still something Khurshid uses as an outlet as much as she can. “I was more of a quiet observer throughout my childhood, and ballet was such a great outlet for me to storytell without having to be super vocal and jazzy about it,” she reflects. But Khurshid found herself yearning for a voice by the time she graduated high school, and swiftly moved to L.A. in pursuit of professional success.

Khurshid cites her mother as the backbone to who she is now, supporting all of her dreams from the start. When Khurshid first decided that wanted to head out of her farm town for the City of Angels, she wrote her mom a letter encapsulating the passion she felt for acting. Her mom agreed that Khurshid should “give it a go”, allowing the young girl to explore the ins and outs of the entertainment industry.

Reflecting on her beginnings as an actress, Nida Khurshid knows how hard it is to find yourself as a young woman while also playing the parts of someone else. Throughout the journey of self-identity, Khurshid knows the importance of maintaining an authentic persona while also trying to figure out your career. Khurshid advises that during auditions, actors should remain fully themselves. While the scripts you read “are beautiful words written by insanely talented writers, it's your job to bring them to life authentically in a way that sits well with you,” the actress says. When it comes to rejections, Khurshid appreciates the denial that comes her way. “Thank you for that ‘no’, because a ‘yes’ that’s more aligned with me is coming,” she says.

During her periods of waiting, Khurshid kept her creative spark alive with culinary interest. “I felt like I could really pour my creativity into [cooking]. I love that you can start your day by creating something that's going to be nutritious, feeding yourself, feeding your body, but doing it in a fun and creative way.” Taking it a step further, Khurshid combines poetry with cooking in a cookbook she is working on in between jobs.

No matter what the actress is doing, she immerses herself completely into her art. Keeping her mind and soul vibrant, Khurshid finds artistry in all she does. “I like to be really present and listen and let every tape be slightly different, and I also feel like it's really important to have a side practice to help you achieve that creative, free, creative flow state. And for me, I have cooking, dancing, or all these things where I do feel physically and mentally free. I feel like those helped me on set even more so.”

IMMIGRANT & ICON: GASHI'S INSPIRING RISE TO FAME

GASHI is a force to be reckoned with. The rapper’s energy may have been the byproduct of recently coming off his European tour, where he hit 21 different cities in just under a month. But even when GASHI is home- whether that’s his place in L.A. or his native NYC roots- the artist attracts millions of monthly listeners on Spotify alone. Racking up a combined total of 3.4 million followers on TikTok and Instagram, GASHI’s online persona is just as enticing as his music. Aside from aesthetically pleasing cover photos and the sleek concert flicks that adorn his feed, it’s the artist’s fan interactions that draw in such a massive audience. GASHI brought his Uber driver on stage this November, rallying a festival crowd together to cheer on Ted, aka Uber Ted. The viral video on GASHI’s TikTok highlights Ted’s own reaction to the wholesome moment, “You treated me like a king when I’m just an Uber driver,” he says to a beaming GASHI, “You made me feel like I was the most important person at that whole event.” GASHI dedicates a large portion of his feed to moments of genuine gratitude. Fans gush over his authenticity and what he has done for them through his music. Every now and then, your jaw may drop at the tattoo reveals dedicated to the young visionary.

GASHI accredits his kind personality to his parents, saying, “Whether it’s my Uber driver or whoever it is, that’s somebody’s father. That’s somebody’s brother, sister, mother, and I would want someone to treat my family with love.” Born in Libya as Labinot Gashi, he and his Albanian parents were refugees prior to their arrival in Brooklyn when the rapper was 10. GASHI will never forget his roots, but he’s comfortable enough to acknowledge his own accolades. “I put in time and I put in work. I’ve seen a lot of money in my career and I’ve worked so hard. But I can’t forget when I was working a regular job. I did do retail, I did the garbage. That lifestyle - I can’t forget that.” Noticed early on in his career, GASHI’s 2011 debut mixtape featured Don Cannon, DJ Drama and Nipsey Hussle. Collaborations with Migos, Travis Scott, Sting, G-Eazy, Chris Brown, and DJ Snake (who GASHI refers to as his “big brother”) would have been enough reason for many to lose sight of their roots. But GASHI insists that the guest lists to his show’s aren’t star studded. “It’s the lady at the cupcake shop. It’s the dude at the pizzeria…These are the people that change the world,” he says. Fellow native New Yorkers would likely credit GASHI’s nature to the culture of the city. The artist himself not only thanks Brooklyn for his attitude, but he reflects on the music that filled his childhood as part of his creative influence. From the cultural melting pot zip code of his early days to GASHI’s lifelong affinity for traveling, the rapper says, “I pick up things that I love and take it with me. That influence is why I’m able to do an Afrobeat song, a dance song, R&B… I grew up with nothing but Jamaicans, Haitians, Africans and listening to reggae has influenced my music. A lot of it has changed me. Even being in Arabic countries, if you listen to my melodies and a lot of the notes I sing, that’s all Arabic culture.”

With his own mind as his muse, GASHI creates with an authenticity hard to find on today’s musical charts. It’s no surprise the young rapper was the first on the East Coast to feature Nipsey Hussle twelve years ago. The connections he has made throughout his career with artists of a similar creative caliber stemmed from his own relationship building skills. “I never had an A&R, I’ve never had anyone do anything for me when it came to features,” GASHI revealed, “Every artist that you see me work with I wrote for or became friends

with before the label. These are all relationships that I build by people respecting me and my craft and reaching out to me.”

GASHI’s disappointment with his label is a story known well by many artists in the music industry. From Megan Thee Stallion, Zayn Malik, and the recent drama regarding SZA and her restrictive contract, many talented singers and rappers find themselves being held back by the resources they thought would propel them into lucrative success. “The biggest letdown was me thinking that I signed to someone and they would make a big difference in my career when they did not,” GASHI said, “All they did was make you wait months…six months to release a record.” Appreciating the artistry in the music making process, GASHI knows that waiting this long makes the music less exciting and harder to promote.

He also knows how the industry has evolved. “To become an incredible artist nowadays, all you need is marketing money. Anyone could become anything in this world.” Regardless of the inauthenticity that infiltrates his business, GASHI keeps true to his message. “I’m not an easy person to mold. You can’t influence me. I have always done what I wanted to do.” The 33 year-old has always used his confidence as a weapon. From sustaining his individuality to walking away from business meetings unphased by the pressures many others succumb to, GASHI knows that, “People don’t like you when they’re not allowed to use you.” With both the creative means and business knowledge to become the mentor he wanted, GASHI’s newest pursuit is Stairs Music, his own record label. Already signing a promising young artist, ALEXSUCKS, the entrepreneur’s authenticity has the potential to change the industry at the top.

The injustices imprinted on artists due to manipulation and abuse of power has tainted the music industry. But no matter how frustrating it can all seem, GASHI reminds himself of the most important part of what he does. “They make up bullshit and assassinate your character. But when you have real fans, that’s all that matters,” He emphasizes, “I’ve always had an independent artist mindset. I’ve always depended on my fans. I’ve always spoken to my fans.”

From the 63 year old women who make their own merch for GASHI’s shows to the kids and families wearing Christmas sweaters, there are no boundaries to who the artist’s supporters are. The love is mutual, with GASHI saying, “The most important thing I knew was that as long as I focus on them, then that’s all that matters.”

The combination of his fan-base along with his dedication to his personal style became an opportunity to step into the world of fashion for GASHI. “I can look at someone and I can understand them based on how they dress.” Beyond appearances, GASHI’s philosophy regarding the manifestation of someone’s personality based off of their style influences the art and aesthetics within his home. From plants to paintings, GASHI’s lifestyle is a true representation of who he is.

Designing his merch with a friend, Cole Poska, GASHI represents his Albanian roots just as much as his New York City street style. “It has to be me,” he insists. GASHI’s creative restlessness and business mindset ensures that he will find opportunity for himself in whatever market he finds interesting. Getting into fragrance next, GASHI believes, “When you’re a star, you should hug somebody and they should smell you for a week.” The rapper divulged that Frédéric Malle, Le Labo, and Byredo are the brands he uses to curate his own signature scent, but kept the specifics under wraps. When his own scent drops, GASHI promises to feed a refugee family with each bottle sold.

He may be keeping his cocktail of fragrances a secret, but GASHI’s blend of unwavering confidence and genuine kindness reveals his journey to success. He will connect with music’s most talented people on the same intimate level as he would a fan. Like many others in the spotlight, GASHI is vocal about the trivial culture of celebrity status. Uniquely, his actions align with the grounded man he presents himself as. The artist radiates an honesty that draws millions to his music for a reason. Unafraid to be vulnerable, GASHI will also recognize his own suave persona and creative talent.

A Glimpse into Gender Fashion Evolution

Fashion trends have always been a way for people to express themselves and their values. For instance, in past fashion history, people used to wear clothes that were very simple and covered up. But as time has gone on, people are becoming less afraid of being judged by others and are more willing to experiment with new fashion trends.

Nostalgia is a key part of the fashion machine. When elements from different eras can all appear in one collection, it’s clear that the past is an intrinsic element of our present day. According to Maxime Du Camp, a curator at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, nostalgia is “a product of our time . . . made most evident by the number of young people who wear clothes that have never been worn, but remind them of their childhood.”

Although it is nearly impossible to cumulatively analyze each era’s influence on modern-day design, curators concur that the 19th century is perhaps the era richest in references. From the drape of a sleeve to the placement of a specific embroidery, the 1800s, by some accounts, were the true genesis of modern fashion as we know it today— when trends began to cycle on a consistent basis. The Victorian era is said to have brought the rise of fashion, as women found themselves more powerful than ever and began participating in the public sphere. Fashion during this time was largely “religious” in nature; many women wore formal dresses as a tribute to their husbands.

The Industrial Revolution, which brought about new technologies, including stronger steel and higher-quality fabrics, brought about an evolution of styles for both men and women. Men’s fashion changed from that of classically-styled suits to a more casual attire. Women, in turn, began wearing shorter dresses and going without corsets. The male suit had been a work uniform worn by those in professional occupations since the 18th century. As the Industrial Revolution progressed and jobs became less physically demanding, men’s clothing underwent many changes as they moved away from what was traditionally considered their formal attire.

Fashionable young men started sporting long hair and clean-shaven faces with skinny pants that were much more comfortable than the tight breeches and full-length jackets worn in previous generations. This fashion trend became known as “dandies”, and this article of clothing quickly developed into a stereotype where men were considered feminine if they wore anything other than the classic three-piece suit. The dandies’ look took on an even more traditionally female form in the early 20th century when the trend became crossdressed. Men would wear dresses, slacks, pearls, high heels, underwear, and a hat. The dandies origins are closely tied to the concept of gallantry, as it was originally a “man about town” who would be distinguished by his charming wit and extravagant dress. The symbols of the dandy-man included roses, ruffles, lace, feathers, and elaborate hats.

Fashionable men from European royalty to people in the lower class were usually considered dandies. In the later years, they were seen as “silly” or “frivolous”, but could also be described as “refined and elegant.” It became a quick assumption that men were thought of as undignified if they wore women’s clothing, which led to a new style of dress that was relatively free from gender signifiers.

The men in this era also created their own type of dance called the Minuet, which was popular in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The two separate identities created an intersectional view of gender for European social dances. The men were able to create their own dances without the sexual connotations that caused women to abstain from such activities during this time period.

In the 19th century, the uncertainty of how gender roles should be defined caused a blurring of the gender lines in fashion, emerging the “dandies” fashion trend. It’s worth noting that this phenomenon is not specific to the 19th century and proceeds to evolve as fashion and society continue to change.

The past centuries have brought a wealth of inspiration to the world of fashion, with styles and trends from various time periods influencing concepts and designs seen today. This has led to a diverse and ever-evolving fashion industry with something to offer for everyone. It will be interesting to see what 2023 fashion will look like to those looking back from 2073.

How Microaggressions Lead to Big Decisions, such as, the Overturning of Roe v. Wade

Microaggressions are subtle, often unconscious, acts of discrimination that can have a profound impact on the lives of those who experience them. They can take many forms, including verbal or nonverbal insults, exclusion, or denial of opportunities based on an individual's identity. While microaggressions may seem minor, they can cumulatively lead to major decisions that have far-reaching consequences for those affected.

One such decision is the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized abortion in the United States. The decision to overturn Roe v. Wade would have a significant impact on the reproductive rights of women, particularly those who are marginalized or face other forms of discrimination.

The origins of Roe v. Wade can be traced back to the 1960s and 1970s, when the women's liberation movement was gaining momentum. Because it’s time to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit at Bellevue Square’s Center Court! On January 14th, The Bellevue Collection and Seattle Chinese Culture and Arts Association are teaming up to bring you a day full of fun, food, and entertainment.
