REPort Charlie Tanck Regional Executive
Most of you know by now that the paving project has been approved for Watkins Glen for next year. The project will begin in the boot on July 6th, right after the Majors race. The Glen Region will be able to have the July Sprints but will only be able to use the short course. The track will completely close to racing after the NASCAR race in August so the rest of the paving can take place. Our September date for the Fun One has been cancelled so we will only have one race at WGI in 2015. Finger Lakes Club Racing will also co-sponsor a race with Mahoning Valley Region at Nelsons Ledges on Fathers’ Day weekend. We are currently working out the details for the event. The track has made significant improvements since our 2014 Westward Ho event. 2015 is shaping up to be a year with many challenges for the region. Solo is looking for new sites, Rally Cross has to resolve issues at its only site and Club Racing is looking at a shortened season. I am sure we are up to these challenges and hope for a successful year of competition. Our annual board of directors’ election will take place in December. The region’s awards banquet is the end of January. The NYSRRC series will present region

members their trophies at their banquet. The Rochester auto show takes place in late February. Barb Lissow is looking for cars for our display. This is an opportunity for us to gain new members. We are at the time of year were most of us are getting ready for winter. Cars are put away, upgrades are planned, and parts are ordered as we all get ready for spring to come around. There are a few members who look forward to winter. The winter rally series will start with Alan Smith’s Long Way Home on January 10. These events are meant for the rallyist who enjoys driving snow covered back roads. A few people will be ice racing if weather permits. I wish that both groups have a great season. I’ll be hibernating. We should thank our members who have worked on the various events and committees throughout the year. We see the same faces serving in various rolls at events. Without these volunteers we could not function. We need participation by more members. Keep in mind that you cannot have an event be it Solo, Race or Rally without workers. 2015 also marks the region’s 60th anniversary. Mary Hartman is looking for people who would like to be on a committee to plan the years non- competition events. She is looking for ideas and people who are willing to work to implement them. 2015 will have its challenges but it will also be another great year for the region if we all work to make it so. Stop by the December membership meeting and hear the latest news from the Mini-Con and our site search efforts. Charlie 2014 NEDIV Mini-con The 2014 Mini-con took place on Nov. 14 and 15. The schedule included meet and greets with SCCA officials and presentations. I was able to attend one presentation in the morning but spent most of my time at work sessions to finalize the 2015 NEDIV Club Racing series and schedule. The work group consisted of the R.E.s from the regions that are involved with road racing and the divisional committee. It is usually hard to accomplish much in a room with 16 people but in this case everyone came prepared for the necessary task. The NEDIV race schedule was defined fairly quickly. The Majors series had a very successful first year and will again be an 8 race series. Each event is at a different race track. To be deemed a champion in a race category a

participant must have the highest number of points and have completed four weekends at different tracks. The schedule also had to be reviewed to resolve any conflicts. Problems with the 2014 series were discussed. Overall it went very well. There was some confusion relative to requirements to win. The confusion was over whether four races or four weekends were required. (Some events were double regionals were each race was good for one point but both races counted as one weekend) We discussed at length the wording necessary to make this clear. Unfortunately the time necessary for the above work conflicted with the presentation on Club Racing and the roundtable. What I was able attend talked about how time become a very important consideration for people and single day events are preferred. We have had the same discussions at our board meeting and the SCCA did a survey to confirm what we already knew. The presentation I was able to attend was of limited value. The description in the agenda promised more content than was presented. This is just my opinion and probably not universal.
Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes November 11, 2014 Location: Fireside Grill & Sports Bar, 3939 E Henrietta Rd Henrietta, NY 14467 The meeting was called to order at 8:00 p.m. by Regional Executive Charles Tanck. TREASURER – Elizabeth Thiel The Fun One went very well and generated surplus. ACTIVITIES Soliciting ideas for the region’s 60th anniversary. Soliciting ideas for the Auto Show. The Awards Banquet is Jan. 31 at the River’s Edge. MEMBERSHIP – Mike Brunner We lost sixteen members and gained four – a net loss of twelve. This happens every November.

RALLY – Alan Smith Social Rally Sunday the 9th at Tom Wahl’s in Fairport. Rally Party Dec. 13 at Cheap Charlie's. Waste Management Winter Performance Rally on February 21st. SOLO – Marcus Kroll Race America has quoted us between $1,900 to $3,600 for a wired or wireless timing system. The wireless package allows us to design more interesting courses, adds more reliability, and is easier to setup and take down. We need to make sure our display works with the new system – new displays are outrageously expensive. We may not need to update to AXWare 2014, but we would like to add the Live Timing module, We are not willing to replace our current truck with a trailer alone. It is a hassle for us to rent a truck every weekend, and also expensive (~$70 per weekend with tax and insurance, plus have to pay per mile). The trailer idea would only work if we also had a dedicated tow truck, but then we run into the issue of the tow vehicle sitting all winter. Our preference is for a box truck, school bus or tour bus. We want timing equipment before a new truck. Still looking for Chief of Safety and Chief of Waivers. We're working on Street Survival. RACE Considering a joint event with a local Ohio chapter for Nelson Ledges. Watkins Glen schedule is messed up due to paving after NASCAR. NEW BUSINESS People used to wear FLR patches on their race suits. They don't anymore. Adjourned at 9:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Marcus Kroll, Secretary
Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes 2014 December
October 28, 2014 Location: Fireside Grill & Sports Bar, 3939 E Henrietta Rd Henrietta, NY 14467 Officers and directors present: Charlie Tanck, Regional Executive; Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer; Marcus Kroll, Secretary; Directors: Chris Ciufo, Fran McAllister, Brian Reeves, Others Present: Carl Dresie, Top End Editor Charlie called the meeting to order at 7:37 p.m. TREASURER'S REPORT Everything for the year has been paid, but minor adjustments are needed to the report to reflect last minute expenses. We had a surplus this year thanks to fruitful races. STPR® paid us our share of their 2014 surplus. Races have been profitable due to Chris DeMinco's efforts and personal asks. ACTIVITIES Eighteen people attended the boat ride. People who want to help with next year's activities should call Mary at 247-9838. We're looking for nominations for banquet awards. DEVELOPMENT This year we reviewed competition board obligations, expenditure allowances and reimbursements for conventions - all approved. Marcus will have a revision of the bylaws. RACE The Glen is scheduling for 2015 around their paving. We don't want to run on Labor Day because we already have a July 4th event for 2015 - holiday weekends have low attendance. The potential conflict with the Ferrari club could turn into an opportunity to share and work together. SOLO The picnic was well attended. Marcus still has awards for people who didn't show up. Marcus discussed running events at Pole Position with their owner - she won't run official group events until early next year, so Marcus has been posting karting events on Facebook.

Solo is looking for sponsors and sites for 2015 We need timing equipment, but we need a truck. The Board would like the truck issue addressed whereas Solo feels timing equipment is more important. Soloists do not like the concept of a trailer unless the Board also approves the purchase of a tow vehicle, which then gets us back to the problem of having a vehicle that sits all winter. Soloists don't have their own tow vehicles because they drive their competition vehicle to their events. RALLY Party is Dec. 13 at Cheap Charlie’s RallyCross lost Perry's Park and needs to put in a permit application. Marcus suggested checking out Spencer Speedway's "Mud Run" location. The Nov. 9 Social Rally is intended to introduce people to the sport. Waste Management Winter STPR® Rally is Feb. 21. RACE Nelson Ledges management has been difficult to work with for planning Westward Ho. We are considering coordinating with a local Ohio region. Discussions regarding a separate "sub-account" for races, especially if we coordinate with other regions. Meeting adjourned 9:11 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Marcus Kroll, Secretary

SOLO REPORT
While the year is just over, we haven't stopped working. We've been tirelessly searching for new sites and new sponsors for next year. If anyone knows someone who would be interested in sponsoring our program, the basic sponsor level starts at $250 and includes an ad in Top End, their logo on our shirts, and a mention at each event. We're also looking for a main sponsor to re-wrap the van. We'd also like people willing to sponsor events - if they pay for their customers to attend, we'll dedicate the entire event to them. We tentatively have a Corvette day and a Volkswagen/ Audi day planned next year.
We're still looking for new sites. Spencer Speedway has agreed to host at least one and potentially two events next year. Xerox has agreed (after relentless pressure from yours truly) to host a Street Survival school next year. If this goes well, we hope to work them over for an actual event in the future. Sponsors for this event are always welcome - think repair shops and insurance agencies. Finally, there are several regional airports that have the room to host an event with some creative course setup. If anyone has contacts to Geneva, LeRoy, or Batavia we would love to talk to someone from those sites.

Watkins Glen International Set to Repave in 2015 WATKINS GLEN, NY (November 5, 2014) – Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup announced Wednesday that the historic track will conduct a repaving project in the summer of 2015. It is the first time the track will be repaved since 1998. The repave will begin with “The Boot” in July (after the SCCA Majors, Ed.), followed by the short course immediately following the Cheez-It™ 355 at The Glen NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend in August. The repave is slated for completion in advance of the 2016 race season. “This is a significant project
for Watkins Glen International, our competitors, fans and track rental customers,” Printup stated. “The repave is a tremendous undertaking and next summer is the right time to begin this historic project and prepare The Glen for the future.”Further details and project specifics will be released at a later date. As a result of the repave, the Glenora Wine Cellars U.S. Vintage Grand Prix presented by Welliver will take place July 24-26. Fans will be able to witness the project from the Fans R1st Viewing Area in the Argetsinger Grandstand. That area will continue to be free and open to the public through the end of October. Rally Meeting Notes
November 11, 2014 96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order. The following eight RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon, Alan Smith, Kurt Thiel and Tony Zanni. General Rally The Rally Party is scheduled for Dec. 13 at Cheap Charlie’s in Bloomfield. Cocktails at 6, dinner at 7 and Santa should show up about 8. Alan is taking reservations. More details will be printed in the December issue of Top End. Corn in a cup is a requirement. RallyCross There is no new information about the status of Perry’s Park. The correspondence does not include a code that we are violating. The winter RallyCross events may need to be moved to other sites. Several alternate sites were suggested and discussed. Dual events with Central New York Region is also a possibility. Summer and Fall Social Rallies Lynn Randall’s, “It’s a Dice Rally” run on Oct. 19, had nine teams start at Colby’s restaurant and ending at CB Craft Brewers. A report will be printed in the December issue of Top End. The “Autumn Warm Up” fall social and training rally, Rick as rallymaster, had eleven teams enter. Results and a report will be printed in the December issue of Top End. Waste Management Winter Rally The rally will happen on Feb. 21. Details are in the works. Committee meetings have been scheduled. Winter Rally Series Tony is creating a series flyer. The generals have been updated by Tom and will be sent out for printing. How LED light bars are to be classified in the “two auxiliary lights” portion of the general instruction was discussed. Two concerns are the impact on checkpoint visibility and on illuminating houses along the rally route. Have LED lights been addressed by SCCA? Sanction applications have been sent for Alan Smith’s Jan. 10 rally and for the Jan. 24 rally with John Kastenhuber as rallymaster. Sanction requests for the remaining events are in the works. Jeff Coppola is well on the way to writing “Lost in a Wintry Wood.” Jamie Hayslip with Gretchen Kriesen, Kurt and Rick have been identified as rallymasters for the rest of the six event series.
2014 December
Tony has updated the trophy artwork for the series. Miscellaneous Discussions Attempting to cross a ditch on the “over plow” can sometimes result in wet feet and pants legs. A paint gun could be used to mark a checkpoint site without crossing the ditch. The ability to aim a paint gun is critical. Ben reported (firsthand experience) that when driven on the Autobahn, a Nissan GT-R will go through a tank of gas in four hours. Cost for the high octane gas was $134. The mpg calculated out to be 4.5 and the average speed was well into three figures. Note that use of a lower octane rating gas can result in a trip back to the dealership. Subaru is coming out with a Sti version of the Forester. A number of Sti conversions were mentioned. Tall Pines is set up to provide several good spectating possibilities. Zip ties are handy to have when putting trim pieces back onto a car (after an excursion into a snowy field). Hockey can work as an alternate to “mechanicing” for breaking a pinky. Alan reported the results of Andy’s test showing 1100 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Several personal characterizations and other comments are not reported in an effort to avoid any lawsuits. Various off road and/or off wheels anecdotes replaced the wiener dog and submarine stories.

‘It’s a Dice Rally’ winds through fall foliage of Finger Lakes
By Lynn Randall, Rallymaster A sunny fall afternoon blessed us for the Finger Lakes Region, SCCA’s “It’s a Dice Rally,” Sunday, Oct. 19. The peak of the colorful foliage greeted us from Rush, New York, to Honeoye Lake and back, finishing at the Craft Brewers in Honeoye Falls. This was a course-following instructional rally, supplemented with tulip diagrams, but the scoring was done with the roll of the dice at six checkpoints, the team with the highest number of points claiming the top spot. As this was a fun, social rally, timing was not a factor, although the drivers were to stay under the posted speed limits. The scores were extremely close, even though some teams made slight errors, proving it was all in the roll of the dice. With a score of 104 points, first place went to Anna Thiel, our youngest driver, with Dan Thiel, her dad as her navigator. Second went to Brett Hodgeman and Tanner Huls, with 103 points. Bob and Diane Swinehart took third place with 102, in spite of a wrong turn leaving the halfway mark. Alex and Tony Lipnicki were next with a score of 100, followed by Shaun/ Karen Hallam, Charlie/Lisa Tanck, Jerry /Jill Trippe, and Fran/Jean McAllister. Nonmembers Gage Buckland and Justin Kraft also competed, placing in the top five. Thanks to the workers who manned the “dice-points:” Mary Hartman, Jerry Kerwin, Mike and Marsha Toombs, Barbara Lissow, Karen Hodgeman, and Carl Dresie. We plan to hold another social rally with this concept in the future, as this is a good opportunity to learn a little bit about rallying while having a good time with friends. Lynn Randall and Mike Brunner, Rallymasters.

Autumn Warm Up 2014
By Rick Barnes, Rallymaster Jumping feet first into a Winter-Series TSD rally is a daunting experience. As much as seasoned veterans try to emphasize that newcomers should focus on course following before being concerned with timing, it still is very much a sink-or-swim proposition. When its dark, the weather is bad, you don’t know where you are and you’re not familiar with what to do, the pressure can really mount. So, to provide an avenue to allow novices to learn this rally business in a convenient, easy-to-swallow form, the rally group held a “training” rally that doubled as a fall social event on Nov. 9. Starting out of Tom Wahl’s Restaurant in Fairport – which was kind enough to tolerate our nonsense over in their side room – the event wound through the countryside and orchards of Webster, Walworth, Ontario and Williamson taking teams to the Pultneyville Deli and back. Though the event was somewhat late for foliage tours, competitor were able to still see a fair amount of color in the trees, not to mention lake views, a nuclear power plant, a trash dump and top it all off with Gifford’s ice cream (from Maine) while on break at the deli. What could make for a better day? While there were no dirt roads, the route
did offer a nice cross section of road types and conditions, giving teams a diverse array of different tulips, speed changes, transits, etc. Six checkpoints in approximately 60 miles kept the time reasonable and the scoring simple. Eleven teams turned up to compete; four classified themselves as actual novices, while the rest were bunched together as Other-ThanNovice (OTN) and used the opportunity to try new things or brush up on technique. Most (if not all) of the novices were new faces, as were several of the OTNs, so the event turnout was positive. The weather was cooperative, and though checkpoint locations kept competitors on their toes, no one got seriously lost (except a checkpoint crew!), and everyone hit all control locations in a reasonable timeframe. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and I even heard a few of the Novices say that they’d be back this winter – and that’s the whole point here. Congratulations go out to Lex Sleeman & Bob Cooper for their win in the Novice class, and to the Smith family (Alan, Amy & Andy) for a first place finish in OTN. Events like this are possible due to the effort and time of volunteers. This event went off without a hitch thanks to Carl Dresie, Tom Langdon, Deb Langdon, Alan Smith, Lynn Randal, Mike Brunner, Angelo Filippone, and thanks to the staffs at Tom Wahl’s Restaurant (Fairport) and at the Pultneyville Deli. We couldn’t have pulled it off without them.

An Introduction to the Winter Rally Series - Pt. 3 (Continued from the November Top End, p. 14. Edited from an article by John Simonson)
Checkpoints
What do you do at a checkpoint? You’ll probably see the checkpoint as you come around a corner or up over a hill. Turn off any driving lights and/or high beams, so you won’t vex and irritate the checkpoint crew. The bright lights may cause them to accidentally give you too high a score (just kidding, but do dim your lights). You might correct some deviation from correct time, but you don’t want to speed up too much (it can be dangerous at the checkpoints – watch for other competitors on foot getting their time cards filled out!), and you can’t slow down too much prior to the checkpoint line, or you may be penalized. So don’t worry about adjusting your speed too much until you’ve had more experience. As you cross the line, the driver should be watching for other competitors, both on foot, and in cars. The cars already at the checkpoint may be leaving, so be careful. You need to stop by the side of the road past the checkpoint vehicle. Don’t block other competitors or the road. You should also turn off your headlights, but leave your parking lights on (on many newer cars, you can’t turn off your headlights). The navigator’s job as you cross the checkpoint line is to take care of timing. Note exactly what time you crossed the checkpoint line, and write it down on your legal pad or on the route instructions by the instruction

last executed.. Be sure you also stop the stopwatch if you’re using one, and record the elapsed time, and note the exact mileage on the odometer. Once safely stopped, the driver should get out, and go back to the checkpoint car with the scorecard. The crew will record your official arrival time, and will give you a new out time. Rallies are like golf in two ways: first, low score wins, and second, every leg (hole) starts with zero points. So don’t worry if you messed up this leg; you’re starting afresh for the next leg (driving fast on leg one won’t make up for being late on leg one – it just gets you more points for being early). The driver will get a checkpoint slip, which contains all the mileages for the leg just completed, plus the amount of time it should have taken each speed class. It also usually has the distance to the next instruction (and which instruction that is), so the navigator can check your elapsed time with the correct elapsed time for that leg, and can calculate how long it should take to get to the next instruction (i.e., the incremental time). Here’s a brief example: Suppose you arrive at a checkpoint at 6:50.10 (that .10 is hundredths of a minute, or 6 seconds, or 6:50:06) and stop your stopwatch. Note the elapsed time from your previous "out-time", and the current time-of-day. Write these down on your legal pad or the route instructions, and let the driver know what your arrival time was. The driver runs back to get the checkpoint slip and timing information. He should be very careful, as other cars may be approaching the checkpoint. Walk on the shoulder, not on the road. When he gets up to the checkpoint car, let the workers know your car number. If you and another car (or cars) arrive at the same or almost the same time, then he should let the workers know where you were in the arrival order. You'll get an arrival time (intime), a checkpoint slip, and a departure time (out-time). Check the in-time (compare to what you had noted in the car, and check the out-time against the current time (we've gotten - by mistake - out-times that just wrong, e.g., an out-time of 9:10 when it is already 9:12 – so we're already 200 points down!) - if the out-time is in the past, or less than a minute (preferably at least 2-3 minutes) in the future, go back to the workers and ask for a more appropriate out-time. Back at the car, the driver tells the navigator the out time (navigator, write that down on the route instructions or your legal pad, and make sure any Time Allowance (TA) you requested has been entered on the scorecard. If not – enter it in the appropriate box), and keeps an eye on the clock. You want to leave about 10-30 cents early (that is 6 - 18 seconds) as it takes time to get up to speed. Also, be careful when you are leaving; other competitors may be arriving. It is not fun to pull out as another car is pulling in. The Laws of Physics are harshly enforced. The navigator should note the out-time on the pad, then should calculate the new incremental time to the next instruction (based on the distance to the next instruction as noted in the checkpoint slip) and add that to the outtime to yield the correct arrival time at that instruction; then he starts adding incremental times (that he pre calculated before the start; the navigator always calculates all the incremental times prior to the start) to that running total for each following instruction; I usually try to stay 3-6 instructions ahead in these calculations - no need to go too far, otherwise you have a lot to erase at the next checkpoint. We’ll expand on this example later. The second leg works much like the first, and so on. Our winter rallies usually have a break about ½ to 2/3 of the way through the event, so the car can get refueled (the break is usually at a gas station/minimart) and the driver and navigator can catch a breather and maybe take care of some of their needs. At the checkpoint prior to the break, you’ll be told (and it will probably be on the checkpoint slip) that all you need do is follow the route instructions to get to the break. You usually have enough time to transit to the break location and have about 20 minutes to tank up, etc. You usually have a “restart” after break. You go to a specific spot (usually the exit from the minimart), zero your odometer, and start following
TOP END
13
instructions again. Your out-time is like your starting out-time; a fixed time (e.g., 9:30) plus your car number in minutes (if we continue our example of car number 14, the out-time would be 9:44). So if you don’t need a break, all you need do is ensure that you are at the restart location by your out-time. Like starting any new leg, you may (and probably should) leave 10-30 cents early). Make sure you know what your speed should be. The end of the rally is similar to the break; at the last checkpoint, the crew will inform you (as will the checkpoint slip) that this is the last checkpoint, and all you need do is follow route instructions to get to the finish location. On the transit to the break, and the transit to the finish, you need only follow route directives; the timed portion of the rally is over, and you do not need to travel at “rally speeds” nor do you need to worry about pauses. Just drive normally and safely and legally to the end of the transit. Suppose you have the following instructions. This demo doesn’t have the usual odometer check/calibration, so this is pretty much what you’re doing from the OMP (Official Mileage Point) onward. Assume that in this demo rally the OMP is a sign along side the road, and your rally speed will be 36MPH. (NRI == "Numbered Route Instruction"). For this example, assume
you are car number 30. (See Figure 1.) Without the tulip diagrams, these instructions might look like: (See figure 2) Notice that the distances are shown to two decimal places. The rally master measures the rally to three decimal places. But the information you have, and the information used to calculate the official (and hence “correct”) distance and times for scoring are to two places, and importantly, they are truncated, not rounded. So 7.120 and 7.129 both truncate to 7.12. This is important, as you will see small amount of random drifting of your odo around the official distances. So here’s how the pre-calculations look (Time=Distance*60/Velocity+delay; assume 60/36 == 1.667, and 60/25 == 2.4) to get minutes to travel a given distance at a given mph. (See Figure 3.) Now prepare for the first 3-4 instructions, by adding incremental, calculated times to your out-time (in this case, your start time, 8:00; also, remember we’re doing the calculations in hundredths of a minute, not seconds): NRI ............................Time of Day 1 ................................. 8:00.000 2 .................................. 8:00.650

So just after NRI 9 (which occurs at 3.70 miles) you encounter a checkpoint. You do your checkpoint thing, and back at the car, you find that your out-time is 8:12 (good, you’ve got sufficient time), your in-time was 8:07.42, and that the checkpoint was at 3.868 miles. Thus it is 0.168 miles, or 0.28 minutes from the previous instruction, so your arrival time should have been 8:06.798 + 0.28, or 8:07.078, so you were 0.34 (34 cents) late. Not too bad. More importantly, the next instruction is at 4.13 miles, and thus the new incremental distance from the checkpoint to the next instruction is 4.13 - 3.868 = 0.262 miles. To get the incremental time to the next instruction, we multiply our incremental distance by our rate (minutes/mile, which is 60/CAS) for the current CAS (36) and add any

pause (or subtract any gain), and so we get 0.262 * 1.667 = 0.437; add that to our out time (8:12) to get 8:12.437 - that’s when we should be taking that “left at T”.
So now
NRI ............................... Time of Day 10 ......................................8:12.437 11 ......................................8:13.904 12 ......................................8:14.721
And those arrival-time values replace any we had previously calculated (which is why you don’t want to get too far ahead; otherwise, you’ve got a lot of erasing to do Lucy...). Now right after that nasty, twisty, uphill section between NRI 11 and 12, you get another checkpoint, at mileage 5.351 (according to the checkpoint slip). You get an out time of 8:17. To calculate the incremental time to the next NRI (which is #12), 5.44 - 5.351 = 0.089; to get the incremental time, multiply by the rate for our current CAS (which is 36mph, so the value we use is 1.667) and get 0.148. But note we have a pause of 0.10 at NRI 12, so we add in the 0.10, and get 0.248. Add that to our out time (8:17) and we should leave NRI 12 at exactly 8:17.248. The navigator should again do the “arrival time” calculations (summing of incremental times) for the next 5-6 NRIs. NRI ..................................Time of Day 12 ........................................8:14.721
Having said all of this, you can also work on Elapsed Time rather than Time-of-Day; i.e., zero a stop watch and then start it running at your out time, and all calculations are relative to that zero value rather than a time-of-day. It is a matter of taste; some teams successfully use time-ofday based calculations, others use zero-based calculations. We started using a stopwatch and zero-based calculations, but switched to time-ofday based calculations once we started competing in limited class, where we had a rally odometer/ clock with a clock that read in thousandths of a minute. If you are using time-of-day, you only need calculate the third column in the above tables. If you are using elapsed time, then you only need calculate the fourth column. Also, once you’ve gotten to the last checkpoint (the workers will let you know that they are the last checkpoint) you just follow the route instructions to get to the end - you do not have to keep “on time” anymore. Just don’t get lost on the way to the end-of-rally meeting place. That’s as embarrassing as crashing or getting lost on the odometer check. (more on special instructions, transits, etc. in future issues of Top End)
