REPort Charlie Tanck Regional Executive

The Regions’ board elections are coming up. Fran McAllister, as an outgoing board member, is chairing the election search committee. I would encourage anyone who is interested in taking a more active role in the Region to contact him. We have a lot of challenges as we go forward. The board has been working on operating guidelines intended to clarify roles and responsibilities. Discussions have taken place relative to if defining these roles will make people more hesitant to come forward to chair an event or committee. I believe better defining these roles will be a benefit. If nothing else it would give members a better feel for what it takes to chair an event or activity. It would show the behind the scenes work that goes on by the few people who now work on them. We need more members to become active in their areas of interest. A lot of changes are taking place in the SCCA and the Region. We previously depended on Club Racing to generate funds to support the Regions’

4

administrative expenses. Participation is down and the cost at Watkins Glen goes up every year. It has become hard to break even at an event. Our savior has been a “Majors Race” every other year. We have seen diminishing returns at these events over the years so they may not be the answer to our financial problems. SOLO is a bright spot. They have seen growing participation in their events. In past years, SOLO had been a gateway to Club Racing. Now it is a place where people are happy to participate and have no desire to move onto wheel to wheel competition. They too have their problems. Sites for events are getting harder to find and cost are going up. They have done a great job in using social media to promote their events and the sport. We can learn from this. Rally Cross is also growing. People have been coming from other regions and areas to participate. Rally has had increased participation and has a loyal following. Unfortunately all these activities do not generate the funds that Club Racing once did. We need to look at PDXs (or Track Days) as ways to increase interest in our sport. A more cost effective venue than Watkins Glen is needed. The Glen Region tried a CRE (Club Racing Experience) at their Last Chance event last year. In my mind there is a flaw in the thinking for this. I agree that there are a lot of old race cars around that could be used. The problem is how to get them to the track. The cars usually need to be trailered and the people that have them are using their trailers to race at the event. We need events where you can bring a street car and run it on the track. BMW and Porsche clubs have figured out how to do it. We need events that do not require an entire weekend to participate in and gives more time behind the wheel. Time has become a critical factor in all of this. The events that are becoming more popular are the ones where you come participate for a day and go home. In a 24/7 world it is becoming more difficult to dedicate two or three days to anything. The National SCCA has recognized these problems. Hopefully they will come up with some creative solutions and programs to help us.

Top End is a major portion of the administrative or overhead costs of the Finger Lakes Region. Recent total monthly costs have been running around $775 per month ($9,300 per year or just over $20 per member). Because only one copy is mailed to family members, the per issue cost of printing, mailing preparation and postage is closer to $24 per year per mailed address. At 16 pages per issue the cost breakdown is 60% printing, 20% mail preparation and 20% bulk mailing cost. The cost of Top End is being looked at by the region’s board of directors. Among the options are increasing membership dues or reducing the number of paper copies printed and mailed. The reduction in paper copies could be realized by providing electronic copies to members not wanting a paper copy. Electronic copy could be by e-mail to a members account and/or posting to the region’s website, www.flr-scca.com. Let your thoughts be known by contacting a board member or the editor at cfdresie@cs.com.

It was 1965. The drivers of our Finger Lakes Region wished to have a race of their own, in a location near to our own region. Roger Clouser was Regional Executive at that time. At the SCCA National in Philadelphia, permission was granted to hold a non spectator race at Watkins Glen. Barry Budlong was chosen to be Race Chairman. Meetings were held at the Lafayette Restaurant in Geneva, with the Glen Region, which was the “Region of Record” as the track was in their geographical area. A man named Bob Stevens, who was both a Glen Region member, and a representative of the Grand Prix Corporation, met with Barry, Roger and other members of both regions to iron out the difficulties of putting on a race. Barry recalls this meeting took place in late winter as there was still snow on the ground. Barry doesn’t remember what the budget was for this event, but the whole point was to have fun, not to make a profit for the Region. This first race was actually an “INEC” event. The initials stand for “Inter Regional Northeast Council.” This was the precursor of NEDiv. This first event was called the Annual Finger Lakes Invitational, continuing with that name until 1969. The late Bill Bell, who was then the Activities Director, described in the November 1965 Top End, putting on a race as “like a blind man trying to describe an elephant by touch.” That was the way Bill described the first Finger Lakes race meeting.” One could only report on what each was directly concerned” Gene Dinkel, who was also involved in putting on this first race, wrote for the same article, “It offered Finger Lakes members a lot of experience with the problems of putting on a race!” Not only was the Region most lucky to have a premier world venue for its very first race, but had the help of all the neighboring SCCA regions, and the flagging expertise of Race Communications, the flagging group founded by Fred German, and our own Joe Cerino. The spirit of that first Finger Lakes race continues today. The region was doing it “just for the fun of it and the organizers are not going to have any fun unless the participants have fun!” Fun we have had… for the last fifty years!

Rally Meeting Notes

August 12, 2014 96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order. The following nine RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin, Jason Kostyshak, Bill Laitenberger, Tom Langdon, Debbi Segall and Alan Smith. General Rally New rally clock containers have been defined and a sample was displayed for comment. RallyCross The February RallyCross has tentatively been moved to February 14. The July RallyCross was well attended (17 or 18 entrants) and won by Tony Zanni in a front wheel drive car. Competitors come from Syracuse, Pennsylvania and Buffalo. Incidents at the recent event include a separated wheel on the nonWagon of Doom rental car, a temporary fire on a black Neon and track oiling by a Porsche. Gas line repairs prevented another fire. Some track work has been completed with more to be done. The August date has been moved from the 23rd to the 30th. STPR® The Wellsboro Winter Rally is scheduled for February 21. Summer/Social Rallies Rick Barnes’ fall rally is planned for the weekend of October 4-5. We need to ask Solo if they can run their October event on Oct. 12 instead of the currently listed tentative date of Oct. 5. Lynn Randall is working on a social event to be run October 19. Winter Rally Series Several of the series dates have been moved. Current schedule is for January 10, January 24, February 7, February 28, March 14 and tentatively March 28. Dates need to be reported to the national office. Could we run the RallyCross course as one or more of the initial stages of a winter series event? The trophies for the 2015 series can be the same as the 2014 glasses

except in green (a traditional British Racing Green). Other possibilities include a pen with led light or rally screw drivers. Miscellaneous Discussions Rally meetings are announced on the rally Yahoo site. Sign up at https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/FingerLakesRally/info if you want to be notified. The Finger Lakes Region Awards Banquet is scheduled for January 31. Ben reported on the recent board meeting (see board report on page 5.) A web proficient rally group member is needed to keep the rally information up to date. More Solo and Rally participation on the region’s board of directors is needed. Reducing Top End costs is being investigated by the region’s board of directors. The SCCA rally board has initiated online “town hall meetings.” Subaru is shifting advertising emphasis from performance to economy. Tom will provide updated wiener dog pictures for use in Top End. Tom’s official retirement date will be around the end of March, 2015. Actual retirement has not been documented. The starting discussions were not captured due to the late arrival of the recorder. While attempting to exit through the front door, balance was lost and during the resulting fall a cut was suffered in the right hand. Time spending getting up off of the floor was also a factor. Another attendee reportedly went through a screen door without opening it first. Not all points in multiple simultaneous conversations can be captured.

SOLO REPORT – Marcus Kroll

The Solo program has been having record numbers turning out this year. We had over 70 at our mid-summer event at MCC, despite rain, and approximately 90 people at our mid-summer RIT event - these are unusually high numbers and we attribute it to our early spring marketing blitz and personal invitations from existing competitors to people we think would enjoy the sport. Van Bortel Corvette failed to show up to the MCC event, and we do not plan to work with them in the future as they failed to promote the event internally. We did have seven Corvette competitors. Ide Dealerships showed up to our RIT event with a brand new, bright red GTI, and a brand new, bright red Miata club. They even took the Miata for a spin, and I took Rich Ide around in my RX-8. We've started cycling regular workers into the timing truck in an attempt to bring fresh blood to the operations level of our events. That is working out well, but unfortunately we're still having problems with wrangling workers and having enough per heat, particularly with so many exempt workers. We need to devise a better system for this. Season scoring will be based on 80% of the events attended. The bottom 20% will be dropped. Trophies will be awarded based on a percentage of average attendance per class, but will be capped at three trophies per class.

Remembering Tim Rizzo

By Tina Reeves There is a red button in our DP Miata. It is a kill switch. It was installed years ago after an unfortunate incident with our DSP Fiat where a kill switch would have been helpful. I look at that red button every time I get in the Miata and hope that I won't have to use it. But it is there, part of a plan for assistance if something bad should happen. I like having it there; it has made me feel safer. That same red button now carries even more meaning each time I look at it. It reminds me of the friend who made sure that the red button was in the Miata. It reminds me that good friends are hard to come by and when you have one, it is important to appreciate them. This red button is a reminder of Tim Rizzo who passed away in March. It has taken me this long to be able to write this memory because there is so much to remember, so much to be appreciative for, and so many "Tim-membrances" that it is difficult to trim them into a few paragraphs. Tim was one of those great friends who snuck up on us and before we knew it he, and his wife Rhonda, had slipped into our inner circle of best friends. Tim had the best smile, the brightest eyes and an inquisitive nature that made him a loved member of the Solo community here in FLR as well as the other car related clubs he ultimately joined. Tim was always up for an adventure; if there was a car involved, he was there. We first met Tim and Rhonda at a friend's party. The friend was someone who Brian had known from the neighborhood he grew up in and who has slipped into a distant compartment of our lives. But it is obvious; his role was to bring Tim and Rhonda into our lives, and eventually into the lives of so many SCCA members. Tim often told people, when he introduced Brian and me to them, that we were the ones responsible for getting him into "racing". We would always chuckle, and say "you can't pin that on us". But he could and did. And we are happy that we had a small part in bringing Tim and Rhonda to SCCA. There are so many memories that come to me when I think of Tim. The memory of how proud he was to tell people about my 7 Solo National Championships and how when he learned that I was going to attend a BMW drivers' school at Watkins Glen, without a moment's hesitation he offered his car to me. He said that the Fiat would not have enough power to make getting out of The Boot any fun and that his Street Prepared Nissan 240 SX would be a much better choice. He would not take no for an answer. So I took his car and still recall the instructor being a bit uncomfortable while I closed in on 100 mph at the end of The Esses and Back Straight. The car was stable, fast and fun. The instructor wasn't. Tim was always available for his friends. He helped us more than once with the Fiat and with the Miata, getting the kill switch installed was only a tiny part of what Tim did for us. He brought over his oscilloscope to help us get the new engine management system working. He understood the way electricity worked better than anyone else I know. He designed a part that would alter the signal and allow the car to start. It still works like a charm, 12 years later. Tim had a gift for simple solutions to complicated problems. He was always a valuable sounding board for Brian when making decisions about changes to the Miata.

2014 September

Additional memories that are part of not just our history with Tim, but also for many of the FLR-Solo drivers, are the pool parties after events. They would invite everyone over and let us take over their pool and back yard. It was always a welcome invitation. While Brian and I were living in St. Louis as I attended school, Tim and Rhonda came out to visit. They also attended my graduation and drove one of our cars home to Rochester for us. During those years we were in St. Louis, we managed to get home to Rochester a couple of times to visit with friends. They insisted that we stay with them and they hosted pool parties so we could get to see more of our friends. One of those times on a Saturday afternoon, they had a wedding to go to. They didn't give it a bit of worry though. While we were all in the backyard and pool, they got ready for the wedding, and as they left the house, told all to have fun and lock up when we were done. Apparently this seemed a bit crazy to some people, but that was Tim. He did things for his friends that were unanticipated and the crazier it seemed to "outsiders" the more he wanted to do it. I have so many more "Tim-membrances" and I'm sure most FLR members do too. I can't write them all, and can't even remember them all, but there is that red button that reminds me about the friend that we were all lucky enough to have. Thanks Tim. With all the friends you made and who love you, your "racing season" will never end.

The following is a copy of tribute to Tim that I, along with Mike Toombs and Alan Smith, was honored to read at Tim's Memorial Service. Rhonda added photos which makes it an even more fitting tribute to Tim. Please enjoy reading it and remember the happy times we all had with Tim. Tina Reeves As a child Tim Rizzo already had an interest in ANYTHING with wheels and that interest remained with him the rest of his life. • His go cart was modified from gliders he used to speed down the hills of Durand Eastman Park.

• He competed in the soap box derby that was also held on the hills of Durand Eastman Park. • He built a mini bike out of a bicycle he bought from his friend Marty. Tim boasted that he could drive it from Park Rd to his girlfriend Nancy’s. A trip of 3.5 miles each way with no break downs but he had to stop at his friend Harry’s for gas. • His first car was a used 1960 Sun Beam Alpine. He paid $250 for it and it lasted 250 miles. His friend Karen added “groovy” leopard print seat covers.

• The Alpine was traded in on a used 1957 Rambler American which he drove to his first USCG duty station in Carolina Beach.

12

The Rambler in turn was traded in on a 1967 Ford Falcon which was sold when he was stationed on Kure Island. After the service there were a succession of affordable serviceable cars including a 72 Nova, a Falcon and then a Plymouth station wagon. At last he could afford his first NEW car which was a 1978 Dodge Aspen. In 1983 he again had a fun, high performance car when he bought a 1983 Mercury Capri which became known as the Mutant Mustang. As so often happened in his life the right elements came along in his life at just the right time to fulfill a dream. Over a dinner party at Dave and Martha’s we met Brian and Tina who did something called Autocross with the Sports Car Club of America. By the end of dinner Tim knew he had found an outlet for his racing ambitions. He learned a lot with the 83 Capri but it wasn’t until he bought the 1986 Capri that he had had enough experience driving and the knowledge to modify the car that

allowed him to win 2 year end trophies in CP class. The Capri was in the shop getting some modifications done when Tim was activated for Desert Storm. His Dad wanted to help by driving it home after the work was completed but had no prior experience to draw on to prepare him to drive a muscle car which had been further modified for competition. He was trying to slowly let out the clutch and the Capri was bucking and jerking all the way home!!!!!! You see, the Capri could generate .7 g’s off the starting line and 1.3 g’s in a slalom. The car just didn’t like to be going so slow!!!

• Next he raced a used 1991 Nissan 240SZ. And won a year end trophy in road tire class. • Over the years he drove Mac’s Brabham BT21, Alan’s Camaro, and Chris’s Star Fire. • He co-drove for many seasons with Chris in the Capris and one season with John in John’s Mustang. • He attended Autocross events locally and in Harrisburg, Boston, and St Louis. • Like so many other competitors he enjoyed the go-cart tracks at Avon and Batavia. And events at Spencer Speedway (as it was called then) and he competed in the Glen Region’s Grand Prix through the streets of Horse Heads. • He was a dependable novice instructor at events and at novice schools. • Wanting to see what a car would “really” do he took the Aspen and the Capri to the drag races at the then Lester Speedway. • After traveling to the Detroit Car Show with a group of SCCA friends he bought a

2002 PT Cruiser for his daily driver while buying a 2002 Mini Cooper S to race. After winning a year end trophy in road tire class he upgraded to the 2005 Mini Cooper S but soon found he was slowly shifting from participation in Autocross to Sports Car Touring. • In 1998 he was finally able to buy one

of his all-time dream cars a 1976, Tahiti Blue, Triumph TR6. He started to attend meetings and events with MG Car Club, and

September 2014

then with the Greater Rochester Triumph Touring Club • Immediately after buying the Triumph he participated in a driving event to the Roadster Factory in Pennsylvania for their annual summer party. Club members asked him when we arrived in PA what tools and parts he brought with him. His answer….. none. That’s why I’m traveling with the group. • Together with Rhonda he co-hosted 14 fall

tours for the MGCC. His personal favorites being “The Over and Under Tour” which used a road that went under the Erie Canal, “The Soul Tour” where we stopped to through shoes into the local shoe tree, and the “MG Alpaca Tour” which included stops at various alpaca farms in the area. • He was also proud to drive In the July 4th parade in his home town of Irondequoit. • To leave no vehicle behind there was also a Mazda RX7, a 1979 SAAB 99EMS with

the bullet hole in the windshield from its days in Colorado and a 1989 SAAB 900 Turbo, a Chevy HHR, a Honda CL175 and

2014 September

where he would sleep in the SAAB which was parked at the boot, wake up during the night to watch the race for a while and then go back to sleep). Yearly he enjoyed the Vintage Festival and races at Watkins Glen, some years as a spectator others as a participant. • “Timism"…..he told time by the car he was driving. • His all-time dream car? A d-type Jagua 2 Suzuki motorcycles a 550 and a 750. After moving to 7 acres in Canandaigua all kinds of new vehicle opportunities opened up to him. There were lawn tractors a zero turn mower, utility carts and snow blowers to play with. ............... • He belonged to the BMW Club and took Drivers Schools at Watkins Glen International and eventually became the provided of the mandatory infield exorcises that was compulsory for all novices attending the school. He felt a great sense of satisfaction when the students improved or told him they had as much or more fun in the parking lot doing his exercises than they did on the track. He also taught at Street Survival Schools and taught teenagers car handling. • One of the more memorable driver’s school incidents was the year we were late getting

the exercises set up due to the fact that the lot we were to use had not been cleared of cars and equipment yet. When security came buy and wanted to close up for the night and saw we were still working they said……no problem just lock the gate to the track behind you when you leave. • He was hired as an instructor by Jeff who was trying to get his Silver Back driving school off the ground. • He attended car races at Watkins Glen, Lime Rock, Pocono and Sears Point. He especially liked the enduro/24 hour events

The 50th Annual Fun One

By Bob Henderson In September, the Finger Lake s Region will host the 50th Annual Fun One at Watkins Glen. The members of FLR should be very proud of this accomplishment. The race has been very successful throughout the years, and a favorite of SCCA Club race drivers who come back to the Glen again and again. They appreciate the wonderful atmosphere and enjoyable competition that our Region has instilled in this very special “happening.” that the drivers expect and receive time at the Fun One. It was designed by its founders to be a special event for the drivers, to give them more for their buck than they get elsewhere. It is delivered with 1. More time on course 2. A fantastic Saturday evening meal and party 3. More and better trophies than they earn elsewhere 4. Extremely friendly atmosphere 5. A world famous racing venue Yes, Fun One lives up to its name because it delivers its promise to the paying customers time after time!

Nelson Ledges Race Course

Mahoning Valley Region Assistant RE Brad Morris created a website for racers interested in the status of Nelson Ledges. It is called www. racing-mvr.org.

14

The initial intention is to update the racing community of the progress being made at Nelson Ledges Road Course. There will be photos and comments from members and other interested individuals. Updates should be frequent. There has been tremendous progress at the track since Finger Lakes conducted their June event. Improvements are visible with each and every passing week. While much work still needs to be done, in many ways the facility is in better shape than at any time during the last few years. This is especially true of the pavement. MVR has Regional races planned for the September 27-28 weekend and we want everyone to know they will find a much improved facility over what has been reported during the past few months. We would prefer people contact us with their firsthand impressions and photos so we can add them to the new website. Anyone that is skeptical is welcome to visit on a Funday (scheduled September 6, 7, and 26). You can participate in the Funday, Tune & Test, or simply take a ride with me around the track. Websites with additional updates include: www.race-mvr.org www.nelsonledgesracecomplex.com (official track website) DO NOT use www.nelsonledges.com www.kryderacing.com Please spread this message. Entry information should be available in the near future. A Double Regional, Pursuit Race, PDX, Club Trials, and Alternate Driver's School are just a few of the activities already being planned. Thank you, Reed Kryder, RE Mahoning Valley Region
