REPort Charlie Tanck Regional Executive

2014 is winding down. Mary Hartman has done a great job in organizing and promoting events. The boat trip she set up took place Oct.12, was fun, the weather cooperated and we all learned more about the Erie Canal. Her next event is our annual banquet in January at the River’s Edge Party House. They did a great job last year and I encourage you to attend. We owe thanks to Mary for her efforts throughout the year. The winter rally series is getting underway shortly. By the time this goes to print, Lynn Randall’s “It’s A Dice Rally” will be complete. I am sure it was a success.

Our other programs have completed their seasons. Rally Cross is having a successful year. Improvements were made to “Perry Park” and attendance grew. The group will have some work to do before the 2015 season as the town came to the Sept. 27 event with questions. I hope everything gets worked out for next year. Solo seems to have found a formula for success and growth. They have used social media, 4

partnered with other regions and car clubs, got sponsors for events and have had a very good year. RIT was lost as a site but the group actually sees this as a positive as it was their most expensive site. They are currently trying to secure more venues. If anyone has suggestions or contacts that would help them contact Marcus Kroll or Shaun Hallam. Club Racing has had its’ challenge this year. Lew and Wilma Giesy really came through to overcome all the obstacles at Nelsons Ledges and put on a successful event. They really went all out to get things done when it seemed like our best option was to cancel. Persistence paid off. Next year we hope to go back and are looking at partnering with Mahoning Valley Region to put on an event. I believe that inter-region cooperation will be needed in the future to keep Club Racing viable.

Chris DeMinco did an outstanding job as chairman on the Club Racing competition board and race chair of the "Fun One”. He worked tirelessly to get extra cars into the event. Without his efforts we would have roughly 40 less participants. The event was a financial success because of him.

Our Board of Director elections are coming up. Fran McCallister has gotten together a strong list of candidates for you to choose from. (See “Meet the Candidates” in this issue of Top End. Ed.) I hope in future elections that more people will come forward to help keep our region strong. Our region is what you make it.

The last thing to mention is our membership meetings. Attendance has been very low. We would like to bring in speakers but fear they will be talking to an empty room. It is dis- heartening when board members and group chairs outnumber other participants. If you have ideas to improve content and participation let us know.

Regional Executive Charles Tanck, incumbent Interest – Club racing Join date – 8-2007 Licenses held – Full Competition, Crew, Divisional Scrutineer Offices held - Director 2011 through 2013, Regional Executive - Current Region recognition - Outstanding worker award – 2012 Assistant Regional Executive Chris DeMinco (Excerpted from the January 2012 issue of Top End. - Ed.) De Minco is concerned about the future; one of his goals is to solidify the tenacity of the region. He feels with new motorsports clubs springing up today, especially those which cater to a specific interest, it can be difficult for our region to extend a personal hand to each and every member. He also understands the importance of avoiding volunteer burn-out.

“Maybe bigger isn’t better but we need to be the best at what we decide to do and the main place where motorsports 5

enthusiasts go to have a safe, fun place to play. I think we need to focus on fewer things. Be the best we can with the personnel and finances we have to keep up Finger Lakes reputation for putting on first-rate events,” De Minco said. “We’ve got a very small core group that we seem to tax over and over again to support the main elements of the club and performance events—that’s bad.

They get old, they burn out or they just get tired of constantly being asked to support the club. If everyone contributed a little it would prevent the few people from doing too much.”

Moving aside the classification of being a “racer,” “soloist,” or “rallyist,” De Minco said the cohesiveness is developed at fun, social events, using the recent “old-timers’ picnic” as an example. This opens the doors of communication.

“The basic membership meeting used to be a place to do that, but now with monthly sub meetings for every specialty and minimal free time we’ve lost the close family of members that should cross pollinate within the whole organization,” he said.

Chris sends a challenge to each member.

“Let’s make it a personal priority for each of us to go to a few membership meetings and maybe even volunteer to support a new club venue this year,” De Minco said. “We have enough of them so you should be able to work it into your busy schedules. As they say, ‘just do it!’ You may meet some really interesting people.”

Directors Brian Reeves, incumbent I joined FLR SCCA in 1980 and have been a member ever since. My main interest has been in Solo including participating in 20 Solo National Championship events. I have been a licensed Solo Safety Steward Instructor for over fifteen years. I believe the Finger Lakes Region’s strength is its members. The members are consistently willing to volunteer and do whatever needs to be done. The most important issue that the club currently faces is being able to continue to host quality events at affordable prices. The cost of everything we do is increasing every year. With this reality, it keeps getting harder to not lose money on our events.

I am a CPA and I believe that I can help ensure that the club continues to operate in a fiscally responsible manner.

Lakes SCCA since 1986 and am the owner of Thiel’s Import Auto Service in Canandaigua, with an understanding wife Sarah, and twin daughters, Hannah and Holly. I have participated in all of the region’s motorsports areas: Solo, RoadRally, at both the local and pro rally levels, including STPR and Ontario performance rally. I have been a rally master and stage captain, so know the worker’s point of view. Other activities include ice cross (weather permitting), club racing (with a few trophies in ITA).

The region needs to grow grass roots motorsports activities, so the average car owner can know the fun of playing with a car. Autocross/Solo is the best venue to begin to learn car control. It is a great stepping stone to other venues if the driver want to do that, or he can stay there, and have many weekends of enjoyment, or move on to Rally Cross and club racing.

We need more interaction between the areas of our club’s motorsports activities. When I first joined, we saw a lot of what someone called at the time, “cross breeding,” where the various groups helped out at one another’s activities, to result in the best of participation and fun for the club’s well-being.

I took over the RallyCross program my second year as an SCCA member, that was in 2008 or 9? Since then I grew the RallyCross program from an average of

six cars to last year’s average of 19 cars per event. I also won the RallyCross Championship last year in a $200 Honda CRX. I’ve also participated in several Performance Rallies as a co-driver for Charli Tameris and Rich Smith. Most recently I destroyed a transmission in my RallyCross Honda CRX and bought a prepped VW GTI Pro Rally car.

I see three big challenges over the next couple years. Location, Communication, and being Stuck in a Ditch. Location, all three of our biggest forms racing, Club Racing Solo and RallyCross are finding affordable locations harder to come by.

Communication, keeps evolving, we as a club need to adapt and communicate with our members better and more efficiently. We also have to get the word out to the community that there is a fun, safe and affordable way to experience auto racing in our community. What I mean by being stuck in a ditch is the mindset of “that’s how it’s always been done.” I’m an advertiser so I’ll put it to you this way, a good brand never stays still, they are continually evolving. As a club we need to continue to evolve as well, get out of the old way of doing things and get some new ideas tossed into the mix.

Three things we can be proud of; Community, History and Tradition.

The fact that so many of our members own or work at garages that offer help and insight to new racers whatever discipline. From my understanding Bruce Perry and his buddies started what has become RallyCross nationally in his backyard. Our location, we have several tracks nearby (within a days drive), some of the best rally roads in the country just to our south. We’re the only group still allowed to bring our own caterers to the Glen! Long live the Fun One. Marcus Kroll The Solo season is over and the final results are in. Be sure to check out our end of year standings on the website and come to our picnic to cheer on your fellow competitors as they receive their awards. There will be food - bring $10 to eat and whatever you want to drink. I'll have my flask on hand and my designated driver with me.

We'll be working hard in the off-season to secure new sites and recruit new volunteers to help out. The key to the smooth operation of the Solo program is our volunteers, and without them, we wouldn't be able to run the events. Consider joining us in creating fun, well run events. It's a rewarding experience and you get to hang out with us, and we're great. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

If there's enough interest, I plan to approach Pole Position about creating an SCCA league for us to compete over the winter. If you've never run the electric karts, they're fast and fun. The Bon Ton in Marketplace Mall has been gutted and a new 1/4 mile track has been created. They open October 28th.

Rally Meeting Notes October 14, 2014 96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order.

The following seven RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon, Alan Smith and Tony Zanni.

General Rally The Rally Party is scheduled for Dec. 13 at Cheap Charlie’s in Bloomfield. Cocktails at 6, dinner at 7, details to be finalized.

The region’s board is looking to pass some responsibility on to boards of the various activities.

The national RoadRally board is looking for a member to represent the north east area.

RallyCross Bruce Perry has been notified that he is violation of an ordinance regarding land use code. It is currently zoned as recreational, but there are details that make the use as a RallyCross course different.

A variance needs to be applied for and reviewed by the town board.

The review includes: what is done, how it is done, safety plan, safety protocols, etc. These points are all covered in the SCCA sanctioning process. Dust may be the biggest concern but there may be others that have surfaced. Dust should not be a problem for the November and remaining series events. The variance application is $150 plus $15 per year. Can we still run if we file the paperwork? Tony is assisting Bruce in this process. The region will cover any costs that arise. Jerry and Rob Susz are other people that can support our effort.

A second concern is the providing, as part of the entry fee, or sale of food.

There are a few possibilities for other RallyCross sites other than Perry’s Park. There is a site near the Seneca Falls airport and Ben has a field that could be brought up to condition for use. If anyone has a lead or thoughts on other possible RallyCross sites, contact Tony. Charli Tameris has a lead on a possible site off of Rt. 15 in Pennsylvania.

That area is part of the Glen Region. A blurb will be written for the November issue of Top End. The October RallyCross date was moved from Oct. 25 to Oct. 26 due to a conflict with an event being run by Central New York Region.

Summer and Fall Social Rallies Lynn Randall’s, “It’s a Dice Rally” scheduled for Oct. 19, has been checked by Jerry.

November 9 is the “Autumn Warm Up” fall social and training rally being written by Rick. A flyer for this rally is in the October and November issues of Top End. The sanction application has been sent for this event.

Waste Management Winter Rally The rally will happen on Feb. 21. Details are in the works. Committee meetings have been scheduled.

Winter Rally Series Sanction applications have been sent for Alan Smith’s Jan. 10 rally and for the Jan. 24 rally with John Kastenhuber as rallymaster. Jeff Coppola is well on the way to writing “Lost in a Wintry Wood.” Kurt Thiel and others have been identified as rallymasters for the rest of the series.

Tony has updated the trophy artwork for the series.

“An Introduction to the Winter Rally Series” is being serialized in Top End, with the first part in the October edition.

Miscellaneous Discussions The air conditioner still works on the Subaru loaner RallyCross car.

It was noted that the phrase “permanent interim Rally chair” has been used.

Tony is on the ballot for one of the two region board positions.

The region’s board has started to at updating the region’s by-laws.

Tony asked who is responsible for communications. A communications position or committee needs to be considered.

Kurt Thiel is leading the Ontario Championship Performance Rally series with one win and four seconds. Tall Pines is the remaining event.

He may finish second in the series as another team has more wins.

Tony’s performance rally car is nearing completion.

Google Street View is a valuable tool in writing rallies.

Getting Ready – Part II

So now you’re at the start of the rally. Find the registration table; fill out your entry/registration forms. The driver should get the car tech inspected (ask the registrar to find out who is doing that) while the navigator is filling out the forms. Both driver and navigator need to sign waiver forms. Once the forms are filled out, you can pay the entry fee, and get your route instructions, if both driver and navigator need copies because of your workload division, you may need to ask for a second copy of the instructions. A second copy is not always available.

Now find a nice place to sit down, get out your calculator or laptop, a pencil, and your highlighters. If you have two copies of the instructions, the driver should read through them to see if he or she (OK, I’ll just use “he” from now on, it’s easier. No offense to the many great female rally drivers) has any questions about the instructions (or notices anything that is wrong).

First, read through the generals and the addendum for the rally.

Then start working on the route instructions. Make sure you have all

the pages, and then go through with your highlighters. I use green and blue, and sometimes violet – yellow or pink highlighters do not show up well in a dimly lit car, especially one that is using red gel filters over the lights. You want to first highlight all pauses and CAS indications.

A CAS is an instruction to Change your Average Speed. A pause tells you to add a certain amount of time (usually to account for the delay you incur by stopping at a stop sign, or to slow you down as you pass by a farm). I usually also draw a vertical line in the instructions at the beginning of a CAS through to the instruction where my average speed returns to normal. I do the same thing for transits ( i.e., a series of instructions in which you have no stated average speed, but instead are told to follow instructions to get from point A to point B within a certain amount of time). You may also want to highlight certain warnings (e.g., very tight turns, blind turns over crests of hills, etc.). Also note any transits or free zones (more about them later). Finally, look for instructions that are close together. I usually highlight any instruction pair that has less than about 0.15 miles between them. This is especially critical if one instruction is at the bottom of the page and the other at the top of the next page. By the time you’ve flipped the page, you may be well past the second of these two instructions.

The next step can be rather tedious, but has to be done, if you are trying to stay on time and are in stock or limited class (or as a novice competing with stock or limited-class equipment). You need to take each incremental distance for each instruction (except for the odometer check and any transits) and calculate the time it takes to cover that distance at the speed you are supposed to be maintaining at that instruction (don’t worry, we will show examples later). You do not need to calculate incremental times for the section of instructions that guide you to the end of the odometer check; you have a fixed amount of time – usually about 30 minutes – for the odometer check. It is a type of transit.

Shortly before the start of the event, there will be a “driver’s meeting”. Both driver and navigator should pay attention. You will find out about changes, cautions, alerts, etc.., and you may need to revise some of your calculations. You will also be assigned a car number for the event. That number is important! Write it down on your scorecard and on the route instruction sheet. The car number determines your official starting time for both the start and for the “re-start” after the break.

If you are not sure where the event starts – where you zero you odometer for the start - then ask someone before you’re due to leave.

Any experienced competitor or the rally master will be happy to point out the start to you.

The Odometer Check

If the rally start is 5:30 plus your car number, and your are in car number 14, then the official timing for your car starts at 5:44 – whether you’re ready or not. In practice, you do not have to leave the start on time; you are given a reasonable amount of time to complete the odometer check, but it can be smart to leave early. It is very embarrassing to be late because you got lost on the odometer check (it’s even more embarrassing to be late because you got lost on the odometer check and then crashed trying to make up your lost time).

Why do an odometer check? Your route following is based on the official distances in the route instructions. Those distances were measured very accurately with an adjustable odometer that can display distance to 1/1000 of a mile. Even though they are very accurate,

you're feeling confident, try to keep track of how close you are to being on time. Remember, early is as bad as late. The philosophy of these winter rallies is “on time, all the time”. If you are “down” (late) then you need to speed up a bit until you are back on time. But don't drive over your head. The person I rally with and I have a few simple rules for rallying, in descending order of importance: 1. Have fun.

2. Shiny side up, greasy side down.

3. Stay on course 4. Stay on time.

Simply, if you're upside down in a water-filled gully, you're not having fun and you’re not on course or on time. Any “heroic” efforts to make that turn onto a side road that came up quickly won't do you any good if you invert the car. If you're on time, but off course – then you're not really on time. So rushing to make up lost time can lead to an off course (getting lost) or worse, an accident, either of which puts you even farther behind (and ruins your fun).

Be sure you are courteous towards other drivers.

It is not courteous to pass non-rally cars at high (but legal – you wouldn’t be traveling faster than the speed limit – it’s not safe, and you can be disqualified) rates of speed.

Be courteous to local residents; shining your driving lights or high beams into their houses is not courteous. Neither is passing by their homes at high rpms, especially with a loud exhaust. They have been known to impede or stop following competitors. (more on checkpoints, calcs., etc. in future issues of Top End)

they can vary, as road surface, tire and road temperatures and other factors can influence the accuracy. It is unlikely that even the car that made the official measurements will get readings that match exactly the official distances on a different day. There is little hope that a stock odometer will match the distances in the instructions. So the odometer check lets you evaluate the discrepancy between the official distances and your odometer’s measurements. If you are competing using a “B-Box” (the adjustable odometer and clock allowed in the “limited” class) or an “A-Box” (an adjustable odometer, clock and TSD computer allowed in the “equipped” class), you need to read the instruction that came with your A or B box, and adjust its factor so it will agree with the official distances in the rally route instructions. If you are in stock class (you have only the odometer that came with your car), you may want to compute a correction factor.

You do this so you can mentally (or on paper) adjust the odometer reading so it is converted to “official” distance, or so you can convert all official distances into values that are consistent with your odometer (examples will follow).

At the end of the odometer check, you’ve reached the OMP, or Official Mileage Point.

Stop at the side of the road, record your measured distance, and zero your odometer, and then move a ways down the road and stop (other competitors need access to that spot).

Calculate your correction factor, set up your A/B box, and wait for your out time. For example, if you are car number 14, and your official departure time from the start was 5:44, and you were given 30 minutes to complete the odometer check – then you should be leaving the OMP to start the first leg (section) of the rally at 6:14.

First Leg

Since it takes a while for your car to get up to speed, it is probably wise if you leave a few seconds (6-18 seconds, or 10 to 30 “cents”) early. If you are using a stopwatch to keep on time, start the stopwatch at the correct out time, and NOT when you actually leave.

Note – when I was competing in limited class (B-Box) I still used a stopwatch as a backup, and always started it at our out time, and stopped it as we crossed the checkpoint line.

This was cheap insurance against the B-Box failing in the middle of a leg. Now that I'm running in equipped class, I will still use a stopwatch as a backup.
