In recognition of his mechanical abilitiy and skills, Regional Executive Mike “Lugnut” Toombs was given this award at the February general membership meeting.

REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive I’m sitting here at the National Convention and am once again proud of our region. First off some information, there are 115 regions in the United States and each region is put in the same pool when judging is done for the communications award. They also group the web presence and the newsletters together. The Finger Lakes Region was judged to be the best in communications for all of the SCCA. So Thursday afternoon I was able to go up on stage and receive two first place trophies, one was for Top End and Carl Dresie and the other for our Webmaster MaryAnne Shults. If you start thinking about the number of people who put out publications for the 115 regions, this is quite an award. All I can say is wow! Each tine I come to the convention I get this enthusiasm that grows and I keep seeing things that other people are doing and I say to myself we need to do that. Most of the time these things are things that I need to do. I would love for every member of the region to enjoy his or her experience and be proud of being a FLR member. I have to be realistic and say that I know this isn’t going to happen and sometimes it may be because of something we could have done differently. So what can we do to welcome that new member, maybe it’s something as simple as saying hello and talking to them. I need your help – I need everyone who enjoys the region as much as I do to become ambassadors for the region. We are doing a good job – I talked to a Finger Lakes Region member while in Las Vegas who now lives in California (Eva Ames), and she has never found another region that treated her as well as we did. We need to continue to do this and we need to keep these new members coming back. 4

The SCCA lost 10,000 members last year. You read that right, one with four zeroes after it. We can’t stop everyone from leaving, but I would like us to start working on stopping as many as possible. Other things I got at the convention, SCCA Inc. is doing well. There was a loss by SCCA Enterprises, and Pro Racing had a smaller than budgeted profit, but over all the SCCA was in the black for 2010. The one important item was that Pro and Enterprises continue to pay down the loans to Inc. on a monthly basis and this helped Inc’s bottom line. The different programs – RallyCross, RoadRally, Club Racing and Solo all had good years. Some of the programs saw a decrease in the number of members participating in some areas (fewer average drivers in Regional events) and had increases in other areas (increase in the number of entrants in the RunOffs®). Some of these changes are out of our control, of course the economy is a big factor, but I’m thinking, in my totally unscientific without any actual data to back it up, that things are turning around. Based on that assumption I will predict that we are going to have a banner year. Okay let’s get back to earth and talk about what is going on here and now. The rally program is right in the middle of their series. The rally on the 5th of February was a very interesting event. Jake Bucknam and I left Palmyra and started to drive down to Ithaca and by the time we got there the rain was coming down pretty good. As we were driving

to our checkpoint the rain had a little snow mixed in with it. As you might has guessed, the hills around Ithaca offered changing weather conditions and many of the competitors got caught out by the ice under the snow. I’m not one to mention names (Alan Smith) but there were a few members who needed a little help getting their cars out of snow banks. The drive home from Ithaca was interesting to say the least. We knew where the road was, but were not quite sure where our lane was. Of course this also applied to everyone driving in the opposite direction. Until I got to the NYS Thruway in Geneva, I don’t think we got over 45 miles an hour. Of course some people had a lot more fun getting home after the rally than I did, but you’ll have to ask them about their trip home. If you didn’t make the February meeting you missed a trophy presentation. As anyone who was at the Year-End banquet knows I was pushing for mechanic of the year award for 2010. I kept saying that having 15 wheel lugnuts fastened to the correct torque specifications should be enough. Some people disagree and insist that I should have torqued all 20 wheels lugnuts. Well it was decided by a couple of members that I should have received the ¾ Mechanic of the Year. So at the meeting I was presented a trophy commensurate with that rare honor. Hey, you never know what could happen at the March meeting. Until next month, Mike

Mike Toombs will be attending the National Convention. If you have any issues you would like to have brought up then, contact Mike. Old Business Barb Lissow commented that we had a tremendous turnout for the Year-End Banquet. Those that were invited and unable to attend, called to give their regrets. Race Report Chris DeMinco, with assistance from Elizabeth Thiel, will chair the region’s July 8 through 10 double national at Watkins Glen. At this time, there is no confirmed commitment from a chair for the Fun One. Westward Ho The date on which we could have conducted Westward Ho is no longer available. Unless something significant occurs, we will not have a Westward Ho race this year. Rally Report – Alan Smith The "Ithaca Winter Rally" will run on this weekend (Feb. 5) followed by “Cabin Fever Rally 2011” on Feb. 19. “The Long Way Home” held on Jan. 15, with Alan Smith as rallymaster, 25 entries, including several noted competitors such as Johnstonbaugh/Von Kaenel, Choniere/Buffum, etc. This event was part of the WINTR (Winter INTernational Rally) series. John Buffum congratulated Tom and Deb Langdon on how well they did running Stock. The Wellsboro Winter Rally, a one-day co-efficient 2 performance rally organized by the STPR committee, will run on Feb. 12. A small number of workers are needed. There are currently eight entries. At the request of property owners Waste Management, we will not have spectators this year. There will be sweep trucks at each traffic control. This will allow the trucks to sweep between two traffic controls, which should help reduce the time used. An organizational meeting was held for RallyCross. Attending were Tony Zanni, Jason Light, Mike Toombs, Ben Gilmore and Tom Langdon. Zanni was named is RallyCross chairman for 2011. Initial dates have been set. Rich Smith was a late arrival. Ben Gilmore has a site that he is working 5

on for use as a second RallyCross site. This will take some of the pressure off of Perry’s Park. Solo Report – Brian Buchman The region may be able to run at the Seneca Army Depot this coming year, with the provision that the clubs running there help pay for repairs to the expansion joints in the concrete. The cost over the last few years that SeAD has been used was $77,000. They are asking that we provide funds to assist in the repair cost in the future. Tina Reeves will start meeting with the clubs using SeAD in the next two weeks, working on setting up a fund to provide for future repairs. That group will include Western New York Region, Glen Region, Finger Lakes Region, Central New York Region, Mohawk Hudson Valley Region, BMW club, etc. Dates need to be set. The region may also be able to host a divisional Solo event at SeAD. Dates will be booked through Tina Reeves. Tentative dates for the first two events at RIT are April 23, 24 and May 15. Remaining dates for Solo events need to be set. A Solo school will be either the April 23 event or at SeAD in early June. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel Checking account balance and other financial information is available for review from Elizabeth. The checking account is down approximately $5,000 because of recent expenditures, such as trophies for the banquet. All the bills for the Mini-Con have been paid. Invoices for the NEDiv supported activities have yet to be paid. The Mini-Con accounting will be carried over from 2010 into 2011. We should recover a good portion of the approximately $11,000 expenses paid out. The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by Mike Brunner, seconded by Anna Thiel. 6

The meeting was adjourned at 9:04 p.m. on a motion by Anna Thiel, seconded by Brian Buchman. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary Bench Racing Mike Toombs was given a trophy, not available at the January banquet, that was for; “FLR 2011, ¾ Mechanic of the Year, Mike “Lug Nuts” Toombs.” As reported by John Weisberg, the RX8 is no longer. SCCA Runoffs To Remain At Road America Through 2013

Finger Lakes Region Annual Banquet, 2010 Annual Awards and Membership Recognition January 29, 2011

Photos - Mike Brunner Mike Toombs – “Well good evening everybody. As many of you may have noticed by looking at the program, I wear a couple of hats tonight; I am the MC as well as the presenter of a lot of the awards. And so to make things easier I want to make sure that everybody knows when I’m talking which position I’m in, so I brought two hats. This is when I’m RE, (showing a Fun One hat) the Fun One is one of our activities of course. And this one is because everybody knows how much I really love this logo (showing a NESCCA hat). So this is when I am MC, when I have the NESCCA hat up here. ---

TOPEKA, Kan. (January 18, 2011) – Sports Car Club of America, Inc., announced today that the SCCA National Championship Runoffs® will remain at Road America, in Elkhart Lake, Wis., through the 2013 event.

So right now I’m talking as the MC, --- I have thousands of jokes, but it always takes forever when I start rattling of all these jokes, so I’m going to cut back on the jokes, I’m just going tell a couple of stories.

The 48th edition of the event, which crowns National Champions in SCCA Club Racing’s 28 National classes, will be held Sept. 19-25, 2011.

As you may have noticed in the program there isn’t a Mechanic of the Year award given out tonight. It’s a tough award to come up with a recipient, one of the toughest reasons is that it can never have a repeat winner and it becomes difficult to find somebody new. So I figure that I’m qualified. --- In high school 65% or better is passing and when I put on my snow tires, I got 75% of the wheels tightened. Isn’t that passing? --- It took several attempts to get the battery tied

The extension to the existing deal, originally a three-year agreement through 2011, assures that the premier event for amateur road racers in North America will remain in Wisconsin through the event’s historic 50th running.

down in Rich Smith’s car at the Solo Nationals. Rich has his car back and it worked when I gave it back to him.

So now I’m going to introduce the Regional Executive who has a little speech to give.”

State of the Region “When I went to start this speech I started by looking at what was said last year. Everything said last year still applies; it still takes a lot of people to keep this organization running. There are no unimportant people when it comes to putting on our events. From the flagger out on the corner to the solo safety steward, every job is still an important part of the club. We are lucky to have a region that has four active groups; race, Solo, RoadRally and RallyCross. This past year we put on two races, Westward Ho! and The Fun One. I need to thank the chairs for each event – Scott Moller and Meridith Croucher chaired the Westward Ho! Race. Elizabeth Thiel and John Walsh chaired The Fun One. I also need to mention that the chief registrars for these events, Wilma Giesy and Marsha Toombs both put a lot of hours into the races and we all owe them a great deal of thanks. The solo program had eight events and put on the Finger Lakes National Tour – a two-day event with 240 competitors coming from all over the country and Canada. Brian Buchman continues to look after the active program and push it forward with support from a countless number of people. Marnie Soom once again stepped up and chaired the National Tour, her fifth year in a row chairing that or the Pro Solo event. Then there were chairs for each regional event, three at RIT, and five at the Seneca Army Depot, these people spent hours designing and setting up each event. Speaking of Solo and The Seneca Army Depot, it looks like we will still be running there this year, pending some other things that need to taken care of. But it is looking

March 2011

very good, so we have that to look forward to. That doesn’t mean we should stop looking for event sites, having too many event sites is not a bad thing. This year we put on our third Street Survival School. Dave Avery continues to chair a fine event and each year we gain a little knowledge on running the event, and hopefully help some young drivers live to be old drivers. This year’s event was run at the Depot, which is a much better place to hold it than RIT. We also, need to maintain our commitment and continue running these events. We also need some more people to help, so please consider coming out and helping this year. The RoadRally program put on their usual night rallies once again. Deb and Tom Langdon did another fine job of not chairing the rally program for another year. As well as the biweekly Saturday night rallies during January and February there two day time “summer” rallies for a little extra fun, rallymastered by Rick Barnes. The rally event chairs spent a lot of time laying out the rallies and checking out the mileages and checkpoint locations, so that everyone running the event can have fun. The one thing I found out by working rallies is that there are always plenty of stories to come out of each one. Like getting to checkpoint ten before checkpoint three. And then setting there at checkpoint ten and saying, ”OK Jake, now you know how to run the clock that was setting back in Canandaigua.” Fortunately Marnie had a clock with her. Jim Perrin from Western New York took over the RallyCross program until we could find, what I hope is, a more permanent chairman. We owe thanks to Bruce Perry for continuing to allow us to put on events on his property. We are currently looking at another site in Seneca County, so that we are not wearing out our welcome in Livingston County. STPR® (Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally) LLC continues to be efficiently run by the three managers, Lew Giesy, Meridith Croucher and Alan Smith. Each year they strive to make STPR® a better event. This year they have added a one-day event in February, which should not only help financially, but we hope increase the number of qualified drivers and trained workers for STPR®.

(chaired by Rich Smith) are always there to make sure each program continues to run well.

I also would like to thank the board of directors for their support and help this past year. The four offices were: John Walsh - Assistant Regional Executive Carl Dresie - Secretary Elizabeth Thiel – Treasurer Barbara Lissow - Activities Director The directors were: Dave Ciufo Scott Moller John Morris - outgoing Gene Dinkel – outgoing This year is looking like it is going to be another good year. Brian Buchman is continuing to chair the Solo program and Deb and Tom are continuing to not chair the RoadRally program. Dave Avery is going to chair the Street Survival School (I made a point of asking him that before I read this.) and Tony Zanni, a new member, will be chairing the RallyCross program. I know Tony has some great ideas and will be getting plenty of help from experienced competitors. We had a meeting a couple of weeks ago and there were a lot

On top of everything else we did this year we also hosted the North East Division Mini-Convention this past fall. Elizabeth Thiel found a great location at The Woodcliff Hotel & Spa in Perinton to put on the event. There are also people who are in the background helping keep the region running. Carl Dresie spends a lot of time putting together Top End every month. I have always felt, I said this last year and say it again, and continue to feel that a monthly newsletter is very important, and we continue to put out what I believe is one of the better ones in the country. Solo II competition. He shall also be a credit to the Region. Selected by the Solo Board. This year's recipient is brand new to solo as of the novice school back in April. During that school he placed 14th out of 35, which was the start of a great adventure for him. The day after at the first points event of the season he managed a 4th place finish in the Novice class and earned his first trophy. By the 7th event of the season (sorry I lost my place) he had a first in class finish under his belt and was “kicked” out of the novice program just before the end of the year. This graduation did not deter this young drive however as he managed a 12th place finish in the more competitive Road Tire class on his first try. When in the novice class he always placed in the top 10 during points events and that gave him a large advantage toward winning the season championship at the end of the year. The person who finished second in class for the season championship?... that would be his Dad! Not surprisingly, Dad made him drive his own car after a little upset in his father’s car early in the season. Rookie of the year for 2010 is Dean Wallace. The watch given to George Morris commemorating 55 years of Finger Lakes Region membership.

Like I’ve said there is always a story that comes out of a rally. I do have to tell a story from the first rally of the season. Jake Bucknam, Elizabeth Thiel and I were going out to work the rally. Corey Kuhns had given us coordinates for the checkpoint. I punched the numbers into Betty, Betty is my GPS – everybody names their GPS – so Betty says to go this way. No railway beds etc. The trouble was that Corey gave me latitude and longitude in a different format than I typed into Betty. At this point I had no idea where Betty was taking us. When we crossed I-390 north of Avon, Jake said we were supposed to be going south on I-390 to exit 6; down around Dansville. So we were following the directions, not Betty, and we pull up to the point and it says CP 10. So we didn’t make checkpoint 3 but we were there plenty early for 10. -- We stopped in Mount Morris and then at Tractor Supply in Dansville. I bought this 20 million-candle power flashlight. The other time we were in Dansville that night is not a story for me to tell. I am now done being MC and will give the podium up to our 2010 Solo chair, Brian Buchman.” Brian Buchman “Thank you Mike. I have four awards to give out this evening, three for driving and one for outstanding contribution. I will start with” OUTSTANDING SOLO ROOKIE OF THE YEAR (Finger Lakes Trophy) “Awarded to the Finger Lakes Region driver who shows the greatest degree of promise during his first full season of 12

Dean is in a hockey game in Canandaigua.” SOLO DRIVER OF THE YEAR “This award was instituted around 1994, and was determined to be awarded to the FLR Solo driver who demonstrated exemplary skill in his / her driving during the season. Consideration is given to a driver's performance at the divisional and national levels of competition. This award may be given to a driver who wins a National Championship. Some consideration may also be given to a driver's performance and contributions during the season to the Finger Lakes Region Solo II program as well. The winner will represent the Finger Lakes Region with dignity as well as excelling in his or her driving competition. This year's recipient is relatively new to solo and drives a very fast, well-sorted car. His driving displayed consistency throughout the year, but was always steadily improving. By the last two events he had the car and courses dialed-in and was able to achieve top pax and top raw times for the event, excluding the pesky RIT Formula SAE cars. This success allowed him to finish 3rd for the year in a very competitive Pro class, even beating his own brother in the same car! In larger events his skills shined as well. Despite some circumstances outside of his own control he had a great showing at the SCCA Nationals in Lincoln, Nebraska and also placed first in class at the Finger Lakes National Tour, which is an impressive feat. Driver of the year for 2010 is Jeff Colegrove. The next award for Solo is the” OUTSTANDING SOLO CONTRIBUTOR (Marv and Eunice Brudno Trophy) “This is awarded to a driver who has made an outstanding contribution to the Regional Solo program. drivers who are also a very cute couple! They are genuinely pleasant people to work with and fill in blanks whenever one was discovered. Not only were they just generally helpful but also they took on some specific and challenging tasks that set them apart in their efforts. At nearly every event, rain or shine, this couple could be found somewhere on the course snapping photos of the rest of us that were promptly uploaded to the website for us show our friends and colleagues the next day and brag about. That was not enough though as they also decided to become Solo Safety Stewards and keep a keen eye on our well being before, during and after the events. This can be a stressful and exhausting job but they managed to pull it off successfully and keep smiling as they always do. Plus, if you thought their season sounded packed already then you will be stunned to know that they also drive and compete! Our Solo program would not be what it is without the help and dedication from people like this who are truly a credit to our region. Outstanding Solo contributors for 2010 are Jane and Paul Quinn.”

IMPROVED SOLO DRIVER “This awarded is given to the driver who has shown the greatest improvement in his or her driving performance over the course of the season. This driver will also be a credit to the Region. This year's recipient is also relatively new to solo having started as a novice in the first event of 2009. By his 4th event that year he had graduated to the more competitive Road Tire class and was consistently finishing just out of first place against some veteran drivers. In 2010 he came back with a vengeance and pulled off a 1st place finish by just the second event. The rest of the season continued to be just as impressive for him with more than half of the events he entered resulting in a first place finish in his class. His drive to improve was evident at the end of the year when he walked away with the Road Tire

championship trophy, leaving some very tough competition in his dust. Most improved driver for 2010 is the man with no shame who drives “top down” in the rain...Dan Wilcox. Dan is not here as well. Thank you everybody.”

Mike Toombs – “There is one thing I found today, you don’t go to FedEx at noon and ask them to do a stiff cardboard thing by four. Next up is our club racing awards, Mr. Rich Smith.” Rich Smith “Mr. Toombs was discussing some issues he had with the CRX he took to Lincoln. What people don’t know is that Mike and I traded cars basically and – Ahh – Mechanic of the Year – I don’t think so.” BEST NEW DRIVER (Roger Clouser Memorial Trophy) Awarded to the Finger Lakes Region driver who shows the greatest degree of promise during his first full season of competition. He shall also have been a credit to the Region at the racecourse. It is my honor to be here to award the Best New Drive of the year. This driver would be in their first full season

it back and forth, without needing to hold the other end. The last rally we worked was pretty good. The problem was that we were working a radio checkpoint with John Walsh and I couldn’t hear him. Alan Smith pulled up and could hear John Walsh just fine, I couldn’t. Alan’s antennae worked better at the second checkpoint even through the ice on the top of the car. A radio checkpoint consists of someone setting off of the road with a radio. The time recorded is radioed ahead to the open checkpoint car and both times are recorded on the score sheet at that point. Most of the time the drivers don’t see you until late, but the usually wave. (Not all of them are waving!) ---

Finger Lakes Region’s Driver of the Year Michael Hausknecht, for the second year.

“The next award is the Driver of the Year Award. This guy is becoming a household name here; he has driven at Pocono, Nelson Ledges and Watkins Glen – all national races. He went to Westward Ho, July Sprints, the Fun One and the Last Chance. He finished 8th out of 39 in the Northeast Division. The most astonishing part is that in Spec Racer Ford he was first only to Charlie Campbell in points. Charlie had 200 points in a Spec Miata, Michael had 201. Arguably the two toughest classes. So it is my honor to give Michael Hausknecht Driver of the Year again.” Mike Toombs – “I had some really stiff springs on the Celica when Rich took it over. He wanted to put springs suitable for the road in it, so when he took the struts out, he says “Mike you gotta see this.” He picked up one end of the strut and moved 14

---Next up, Rally awards given by our non-chair Mr. Langdon.” Tom Langdon “Well to start off, seeing how you are worried about being Mechanic of the Year, I brought you a Swiss army knife (a simple version), this will fix everything up to your abilities on the car. The (competition in the) RoadRally program as such is actually the Winter Rally Series and pretty much beyond that we have fun rallies. The Winter Series is very seriously contested and we usually have a good turnout for those. So far this year we have had two events, the first with 26 entries and the second with 25. For that last RoadRally we had three National Champions and ProRally competitors. If you haven’t tried it yet it is a lot of fun. Just listen to the stories told here tonight.” OUTSTANDING RALLYIST - Driver Awarded to the rally driver, navigator or rally team who has compiled the most outstanding record in rally competition. All types of rallies are considered, with greater emphasis being placed on the higher levels of competition. The recipient shall have been a credit to the

Region. Selected by the Rally Board -- Outstanding Rally Driver - Finger Lakes Award “The past winners who did well in Targa Newfoundland did damage to their car and fortunately for the rest of the competitors are not in the running. The outstanding driver of the year went from a Mitsubishi EVO to a Subaru last year. Even driving a Chevrolet HHR that was on loan, after a trio of incidents with deer. Rally driver of the year is Karl Haltiner.”

Rally Driver, Karl Haltiner

BEST NAVIGATOR – (Dick Bailey Trophy) Awarded to the navigator compiling the most outstanding record of performance in rally competition. “Obviously Karl doesn’t do this alone, over the years he has gone through a bunch of different people as navigator. The last person has been very consistent. As best navigator we recognize Mac McCann. Mac is currently in China through July.” RALLY WORKER OF THE YEAR – (Steve Kittelberger Trophy) Recipient selected by the rally board from the RoadRally and/or Performance Rally program. Usually a member of Finger Lakes Region, but in some rare instances may be from outside the membership.

“This year we have renamed this award to the Steve Kittelberger Trophy in recognition of Steve who passed away this past year. This year the award goes to Barb Lissow.”

Mike Toombs – “I would like to mention that we have a trophy here that the region had won at the NYSRRC (New York State Road Racing Championship) banquet for inter-regional competition. Our driver’s did really well this year. Some of you may remember when we have been here after 10 p.m. here it is a quarter to nine. I think I should slow down. I’m still campaigning for Mechanic of the Year. Experience in the parking lot after the last meeting and in the snow, shows that the Subaru will spin on a dime, until you turn off the traction control.” TOP END AWARD Awarded to a Regional member who has made an outstanding contribution to motorsports in general. Selected by the TOP END Editor and Staff. Presented by Mike Toombs.

Rally Worker, Barbara Lissow

OUTSTANDING RALLY CONTRIBUTOR – John Robinson Award Selected by the Rally Board. Recipients are selected by the Rally board and may be competitors, workers, organizers, or any combination thereof, in the RoadRally and/or Performance Rally program. FLR membership is required. “Actually the recipient of this award tried to be a competitor in the first event of the year. That effort didn’t work out to well, although he did get a new car out of his experience. This is the John Robinson award. This individual shows up at all of the rally meetings, he was there when we voted to reduce the speed factors in the Winter Series, he takes notes. Those notes include all of the stupid little comments that are made at the meetings. This year’s recipient is Carl Dresie.”

“The Top End Award is given to a region member who has made an outstanding contribution to motorsports in general. The recipient is selected by the Top End editor and staff. While the other awards given tonight are related to Solo, rally, race or for other actions related to the region or a particular involvement, the Top End award recognizes involvement across the spectrum of sports car activities. Activities that reflect positively on the Finger Lakes Region and sports car usage in general. In the past this award was given for, among other things, leading the effort for a national level Solo, reporting on involvement in a significant racing event and putting a significant face on a Finger Lakes event. This year Andy’s father is recognized for showing us the long way home from Friendship, a winter RoadRally that draws competitors from throughout the Northeast. And for managing to keep us from wasting our efforts in the woods around Wellsboro, an event that has drawn international competitors. In the past he has organized Solo events for charitable causes.

OUTSTANDING WORKER AWARD – (Gene Dinkel Trophy) Awarded to the Finger Lakes Region member who has devoted a notable amount of his or her time as a worker at motorsports events sponsored or sanctioned by the Finger Lakes Region. The accumulated working points recorded in the Region’s High Points for that year will be considered. Primary consideration will be given to individuals who have worked in general worker categories, not as chiefs of specialties or as chairpersons of events. The individual must have worked in at least two different motorsports areas at least once, worked on at least one public service activity if the Region has conducted such, and been a true credit to the Region. Selected by the Board of Directors.

safer cars for the competitors. He bends over backwards to help anyone who needs help passing tech. He has helped with STPR® as course opening, unfortunately this past year he was unable to complete the course after a slight off. But of course, he did the smart thing; go off on the passenger’s side of the car. This year’s outstanding worker goes to Bruce Perry. Next up John Walsh is going to present the Sportsmanship Award.” John Walsh “Since we are telling rally stories. I’m not normally a rallyist, but every now and then I will run a rally. I discovered that some people at speed have difficulty understanding right and left, that there are some people (name withheld to protect the innocent) who when you hold your hand in front of his face, as navigator, and say “turn left here” will still turn right. And as a counter point to Mike’s plea for Mechanic of the Year, at flat rate he would starve to death. It took Mike and I eight hours to put a top on Mike’s Miata; a job that normally should take three hours. He would starve to death anyway as shown by going to lunch half way through and then Mike remembers he forgot his wallet. (Or did Marsha just forget to give Mike his allowance.) So the whole Mechanic of the Year thing – Naaah.”

“This year’s outstanding worker is for someone who is a long time member of the SCCA. Over the years he has done a lot, solo competitor, rally competitor, race driver, but we are now honoring him for what he has done as a worker. The recipient has taken on the job as our Chief Tech Inspector. As well as going to the race and running tech he is also competing at each event, not always an easy job. He is a stickler for the rules, (Just ask anybody who has taken a car in that is not quite legit.) which leads to 16

Jim and Chris Pluta awarded the Alix Lafontant Trophy

SPORTSMANSHIP – (Alix Lafontant Trophy) Awarded to the member who has most consistently exhibited the attributes of sportsmanship throughout the year and whose participation in SCCA events has been a credit to the Region. The term Sportsmanship implies that the award goes to a true “sportsman”—one who competes in a race or rally competition seriously and who consistently places the ideals of sportsmanship above his own personal gain. Selected by the Board of Directors. “We’ve all had among us special people who really went above and beyond in assisting their fellow competitors. Everybody understands that there are certain people that they can go to and get some really selfless help, whether they are racing, rallying or even Solo. There are always people there who can provide a hand. This year’s winner is a father and son team who we know when we are racing we can go and get assistance from. Jim and Chris Pluta, you are the Alix Lafontant Trophy Sportsmanship winners.” Mike Toombs – “I worked very had on this, and I will work extra hard on getting the Mechanic of the Year Award next year. Next time I change tires, I will tighten all 19 lug nuts!” SPECIAL RECOGNITION “This past year we have lost many people who made us what we are today. One special member was Judy Dennis. Judy set standards that many of us who come after her have had to work hard to meet. Judy helped a struggling Solo II program in the late 70’s when Chris Bucknam needed something as simple as flags, and there was no money to buy them. By all accounts Judy was the first female Regional Executive back in the mid 80’s. She chaired countless races, from the Fun One to the National. I learned how to chair a race as her cochair for The Fun One back in 1988. She

Rally Tom Langdon Interim RoadRally Chair

Rally Meeting Notes

February 3, 2011 96 Church Street, Victor, NY Eight RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present. The following is organized by subject and is not in chronological order. Winter Rally Series The Ithaca Winter Rally is set to go. Alan will bring a printer to use in printing out the results at the end of the event. A check of the Cabin Fever Rally is scheduled. Unused glass trophies from various Finger Lakes Region races have been donated for use as trophies for the 20112012 Winter Rally Series. They will be converted to show only place and no date, using stickers. There will not be a fifth Winter Series event on March 5. We need to start thinking about events for the 2011-2012 Winter Rally Series. Look over past events and see if they can be updated. Roads to avoid or to minimize their use need to be considered. We are in need of more RoadRally Safety Stewards. A process by which a safety steward can do the safety check and still run the rally was discussed. No checkpoint location given during the safety check does not allow for verification of leg times. A mapping program can be used to get route distances close. 18

The use of mapping programs to define checkpoint worker routes can be problematic due to seasonal roads, etc. Providing a map with the route and check point locations shown can help get the crews to the checkpoint. GPS coordinates can be help, but the availability of a GPS and the format of the given are important. Use of the “Not Your State” DOT stakes is an easy way to mark locations. A scoring program that includes the report forms needed for SCCA will be given to Matt Rhoads. Matt will be asked if he will do series standings. Wellsboro Winter Rally We currently have nine entries and nine sweep trucks. This will allow a sweep to do between traffic controls, thus speeding up the turnaround between stages. First place will get regional rally entry fees paid for STPR® and second place will get the entry fee paid for the coefficient two rally in STPR®. Trophies are all set for this event. The roads will be plowed with a grader. The event will be complete in one day, Feb. 12. The route will be twice in the same direction, service at Waste Management, then twice in the reverse direction. Service crews will be able to spectate at the water tower during the runs. Awards will be at the Horse Shoe. There will not be any spectators. RallyCross Series RallyCross chair is now Tony Zanni. Page two of Top End will be changed to reflect the change. Miscellaneous Discussions New checkpoint signs and clocks need to be included in the budget. A source of signs is to be defined. Several possibilities were noted.

The general instructions for next year will be reviewed and updated. Transit zones, etc. are to be included. The new factors will be reviewed with input from the competitors. A copy of the calendar as it now stands, will be forwarded to Rick Barnes. He will work on scheduling warm weather rallies. Without glasses, it is sometimes difficult to see little things, like the hands on a watch. It was noted that the Year-End Awards and Membership Recognition included a number of RoadRally stories. This may bring out more competitors. As the infirmities of age start to impact a rally driver the competitor moves over to the navigators seat. A log skidder can be useful when pulling a car back onto the road. The comment, “I’m getting tired of hearing myself talk.” Is duly noted and recorded. Math is the responsibility of the person in the right hand seat. The various options for mounting rally computer pickups were discussed. External pickups on plastic wheels can be a problem. Options are the vehicle speed sensor, input shaft and wheels. The recent evolution of four-wheel drive systems, especially Haldex, was reviewed. A Haldex show and tell is a possibility. Marketing is not always a good source of accurate information. Attending a “winter driving school” may guarantee three snowless winters. Spending money on an adult toy such as a rally car, club racing car, boat, etc. is just a license to spend more money. The car needs accessories, a trailer, a tow vehicle, and more.

Ithaca Winter Rally

February 5, 2011 Gary Thomnas and John Kastenhuber, Rallymasters

Saying it was not one, but two rallies could sum up the Ithaca Winter Rally 2011. The first half was arguably the most miserable half event of which I have been a part. Leading up to the start we had two and half-hours of sleet and rain, which made for completely miserable road conditions. But to my surprise the crews were very excited to see new roads, and the weather didn’t seem as foreboding. As we proceeded in the first half, we began to hear stories from checkpoint crews saying we were missing one or two cars. We found that crews had been helping other crews maintain pace by pulling each other out. We ended up losing four cars by the end of the first half, and heard stories of their fate.

group for checkpoints made sure everyone was happy with the scores they received. Scoring went as follows: 1st in Novice with a 440 score, Jed Sheckler and Doug Binder, 2nd went to Evan Haas and John Wiley with a 1228. 1St in stock went to Jacob Peters and Matt Rhoads with a factored 97.9, 2nd went to Tom & Deb Langdon with a factored 218.9, 3rd went to Jamie Hayslip and Scott Grinnell with a factored 498.65. 1st in limited, with a factored score of 139.7 was George Modlin and Shaun Hallam, 2nd went to Jerry Kerwin and Karl Haltiner with a factored score of 152.9, and 3rd went to Rick Barnes and Jason Kostyshak, with a factored score of 317.9, this crew, by the way, deserves a extra round of applause for spending half their rally night pulling other competitors out of ditches. Equipped as usual, 1st in class and 1st overall was Alan Smith and Eric Hebron, who had an adventure of their own, and was the only team to finish running A speeds, a feat in itself. Second went to Ben

The second half was fantastic. The hills were clear and the corners and conditions made for very competitive scores at the end. No stories of straight at T’s, or sideways around corners. As always, our great volunteer Car No.

I would like to thank the volunteers who came out and worked on a night where they could have just stayed warm. They are, in no particular order: John Walsh, (Superdriver) Bob Van Sice and his two boys, Roy Hopkins, Adrienne Hughes, Dave Avery, Sally Bossert, Mike Toombs, Jake Bucknam, Carl Dresie, Barbara Lissow, Larry Wells and Barbara Abrams. We also had a great sweep crew in Greg Kessler and Henry Bennett, who spent their entire night pulling crews and locals out of ditches. I would also like to thank Manos Diner in Ithaca, who have put up with us taking over an entire half of their restaurant and catering to our every whim for two years now. Until next year ----.
