In the Hands of Lorenzo Quinn Exhibition Gallery Odyssey, Mumbai
This exhibition features a visible artistic progression, highlighting the sculptor’s experimentation with new mediums and subject matter, resulting in subtly abstracted ways of relaying his universal message to his viewers. New titles and finishes are interspersed with some of his more familiar works, leading to the notion of a mini-retrospective—a showcase of his creative development over the last several decades. “In the Hands of lorenzo Quinn”, as an exhibition, in a way represents the many faces of lorenzo Quinn as an artist and as a person—an overall scope of the artist’s legacy and career, hints of his future trajectory, and everything that has come in between. The Bombay Canteen comes to Mumbai! With another nod in the direction of typical (and now, über fashionable!) Bombaystyle street food, the much anticipated The Bombay Canteen finally opens its glass doors in the heart of the city’s erstwhile mill area—Lower Parel. The food itself is surprisingly well-priced and delectable to the core, reveling in the fresh produce parts of its sum! Among the mains, the milk-braised Kashmiri raan (that needs to be pre-ordered 48 hours prior), the reichadostuffed mackerel served with rice and lentil cakes anointed with an ambot-tik sauce and the South Africa meets Goa choriz bunny pao hit the spot. Interestingly served up in a seemingly bottomless copper pot, the alcoholic high tea punch and the jhoom jam are wonderful libations while the desserts—developed by ice creamers Sucres Des Terres— are an inspired lot ‘starring’ wonders like the masala chai popsicles and the bizarrely named guava tan-ta-tan, the latter being a play on the traditional French dessert, the tarte tatin!

hether it is the tantalising vada pav of Mumbai (touted as India’s answer to the burger, but believe me, it’s much better!), the delicious chhole puri from the mazelike streets of old Delhi or the unbelievable varieties of dosa that Bengaluru loves, there is no food like Indian street food. I like to think of street food as a cuisine genre of its own. No fuss and no frills attached, it’s all about the food. That’s why street food usually tastes far better than the food served in even the finest of fine dining restaurants. The convenience

is an added benefit. Recipes are perfected over decades, reflecting local cooking, taste and ingredients. In that sense, street food becomes a reflection of popular food choices and culture on-street. In a country as culturally rich as India, this is always an interesting perspective. Every city has its specialties when it comes to street food— and tasting the city’s best street foods is a rite of passage when travelling through! Here, we list out the greatest street foods guaranteed to leave you hungry for more. Read on!
Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad is a city that just loves its food—and street food in particular. From the spicy and oily savoury items to the enormous range of sweets, there is something to suit every palette. To enjoy street food in Ahmedabad, head to the adjoining neighbourhoods of ManekChowk (if you are vegetarian) and BhatiyaarGali (for meat lovers). As the sun sets, the area comes alive with hundreds of tiny food stalls, feeding the thousands of hungry souls thronging the area! The chocolate sandwich is something of a legend— heavily buttered white bread smeared with a thick layer of chocolate and topped with a mountain-load of cheese. Odd as the combination sounds,

it is absolutely delicious! Also try the pineapple sandwich (cut pineapple slices and cheese, tossed together in an interesting sandwich eat) and the Gwalia dosa (plain dosa with gallons of sinful butter). For dessert, tuck into some delicious kulfi—mango in particular is a must-have seasonal flavour. Other street food staples include kitli chai (literally meaning ‘kettle tea’) which is steaming hot, extremely sweet and milky tea, commonly found at every street corner. Dabeli, a specialty of Kutch, is also popular in Ahmedabad, as are the spicy mutton samosas and stuffed kachoris. Do also try the Gujarati version of the pizza (laden with much tomato puree and a mountain of cheese). Interestingly,
off late you can buy ‘jail na bhajiya’ (literally meaning pakodas or fritters from the prison) on the street. These are made and sold by the inmates of Sabarmati Jail.
Bengaluru
If you love street food, Bengaluru will certainly tickle your taste buds. While most areas of Bengaluru offer a varied range of street foods, the best place to head is VV Puram’s Main Street, colloquially known as the ‘Food Street.’ The street is lined with tiny shops selling every conceivable type of street food—a one stop destination of sorts. Start your meal at Shri Vasavi Chatniswith the delicious South Indian fare of akki roti (rice flatbread)
and curry, followed byhollige (parathas sweetened with jaggery). The neighbouring stall, dating back to the 1660s, serves excellent curd kodubele (rice flour and curd deep fried into rings) and mini idlis (don’t miss the hot red chutney). Stop by a bhajji shop for some delicious mirchi bhajjis, raw banana bhajjis and dal vada. Dosa lovers will have over a hundred varieties to choose from, as stalls compete over who has more dosa varieties on their menu. For dessert, have the famous gulkan ice cream at Shivanna Gulkan Centre. Jalebi is also a good bet in the winter. Additionally, Bengaluru’s old town areas of Malleswaram and Basavangudi serve some delicious, authentic South Indian street food. In Shivajinagar, you will find

excellent meat rolls. The main KR Market area around the Jama Masjid offers rich, fried pakodas of every imaginable kind. Tibetan momos are also commonly sold in makeshift stalls across the city.
Hyderabad
This city is every food lover’s dream! Trying the plethora of Hyderabad’s delicacies is definitely a must-do for every traveller to the city. As a local adage goes—it’s not what you see in Hyderabad that matters, but what you eat. Old Hyderabad (around the Charminar) is absolutely the place to go if you’d like to discover the real flavours of the city. If you’re lucky enough to visit during the holy month of Ramzan, you’re in for a treat of a lifetime! Eat your way through the tiny stalls that dot the crowded streets. Discover Hyderabadi biryani how it’s really to be had
(the restaurant folks have it all wrong). Samosas with varied stuffings are popular, served with chilies and lime. You cannot visit Hyderabad and not tuck into the kebabs— marinated on sticks and then kept to roast over a flame. Spicy and bursting with flavour, they are served with paratha or chapatti, green chutney and onion. If you’re looking for variety, head to Barkas, India’s only authentic Arab Street. You will get to sample some wonderful street food, washed down by cups of the sweet Suleimani tea.
Jaipur
My first memory of visiting Jaipur during my childhood is wandering through the marketplace, feasting on endless bowls of the rich and sweet rabdi. The street food of Jaipur is diverse and delicious—thanks to varied
influences from authentic Rajasthani cooking, the Mughal tastes popular in Uttar Pradesh and the flavours of Punjab. The best areas to enjoy street food in Jaipur are the bustling market neighbourhoods of BadiChopar and MI Road. An absolute favourite is the pyaaz ki kachori (with a stuffing of onion and potato), a dish that originated in Bikaner. Other Rajasthani classics such as daal-baati-churma, aloobonda, dal kachori and pakodas also must be had. Lovers of chaat will enjoy tucking into Jaipur’s versions of bhelpuri, panipuri and papdichaat. A legend to visit in Jaipur is the Lassiwala shop on MI Road, dating back to 1944. The lassi, served in massive glasses, is simply delicious! Right opposite, GulabJi Chai Wala is another legend— serving tea in little terracotta cups (kulhads).
Chennai

Nungambakkam area, Chennai is bursting with street food options. The classic idli is a favourite in Chennai—the differentiating factor among the hundreds of stalls that sell it being the chutney and sambhar. Murukku (a coiled, crunchy savoury snack) is another popular dish—served plain by the handful. You can also try the murukku sandwich with murukkku, slices of tomato, cucumber with mint chutney. A variation of the Kerala parotta is also popular in Chennai—made usually with maida flour. It is served with a spicy vegetable curry. Idiyappam (rice flour pressed into noodles and steamed) is another local favourite. Those who love dosas must try the muttaidosai. An interesting twist to Chennai’s street food is the influence of cuisines of Myanmar. Traders from Tamil Nadu frequented Myanmar (then Burma) until the late 1960s bringing back with them the flavours of the country. Burma Bazaar is a great place
to tuck into some Burmese delicacies. A notable dish is atho—a popular street food dish in Burma, consisting of roundish-thick noodles tossed with vegetables and gravy.

Life at an ashram experiencing life at an authentic yoga retreat is time well spent, says Sita Miriam Zernis, who feels that this can help achieve what no ordinary vacation can offer—a sense of peace and fulfillment!

uring the past two decades, a curious phenomenon has grown along with the numbers of people stepping onto a yoga mat for the first time. Inspired by the teachings of eastern philosophy, a visit to an ashram has made an appearance on the contemporary travel scene. some say the world is undergoing a consciousness shift or maybe it is just that more and more people are seeking out spiritual retreats in environments focused on more than just the physical aspects of yoga. nevertheless, the search for taking a vacation that includes the basics of sadhana (cultivation of a daily personal practice) and karma yoga (being of selfless service in a spiritual community) is currently growing in popularity.

Time spent at an ashram can help achieve what no ordinary vacation away from home can offer—a sense of peace and fulfillment, and the tools to go back to family, work and community with a calmness and grace to face the challenges of modern life. All this can be yours, regardless of religious or ethnic background or even age. One such teacher, swami Vishnudevananda, had great foresight when he arrived in the West in 1957, at the request of his teacher swami sivananda. swami Vishnudevananda, whose vision was for peace in the world through the teachings of yoga, spent many years establishing ashrams in beautiful places like the lush laurentian Mountains of Quebec, Canada, a sunny palm tree lined shore on
Paradise Island, Bahamas, the splendour of new York state’s Catskill Mountains as well as 40 acres at the beautiful sierra foothills of northern California. In India, you can find ashram diversity within this huge country from the tropical environments of the south, on the Ganges and in the Himalayas. And in europe, Austria and France are beautiful and picturesque homes to the classical yoga teachings of sivananda Yoga with ashrams. each holds the underlying mission of being a haven for those seeking peace, a healthy lifestyle and a positive vision of the future. modern life. The ashrams were created for all to come and take a break in all ways from hectic city lives and return home with a fresh perspective on life. Most of the time, we take a vacation to “vacate” from our minds and the stress. A stay at an ashram is an opportunity to do just that but with the added benefit of adding some amazing life tools to that “vacated space” to travel back home with. With a simple schedule, clean and affordable accommodations and abundant, lacto-vegetarian meals, guests can easily find a daily rhythm that is healthy as opposed to going away to over-indulge in foods and drinks that leave you more tired when you return home than when you left. And no longer do ashram schedules adhere to offering just yoga and meditation. At most Sivananda ashrams you will also find an eclectic program of anything from Indian cooking classes to classical Indian dance and music performances, as well as practical courses and
workshops to enhance daily life and health. And of course, if you’d like to deepen your practice further, you can come to stay for a world renowned month long yoga teacher training course that could just change your life. Why an ashram? Traditionally an ashram was created as a place for spiritual shelter and learning. Once considered secluded and thought to be unapproachable, modern ashram life can be richly rewarding and all about creating community, expanding awareness, letting go of ego and gradually embracing all that brings harmony, joy and peace. Clinical psychologists have long said that yoga practices are truly a great way to overcome the emotional and spiritual conflicts that often come from our growing, progressive, technological lifestyles. Ashram life enhances our personality by helping us realize our inherent weakness, providing an open opportunity to change our outlook as a participant in a
community of like-minded people, not just a guest. Another special thing that happens at Sivananda ashrams around the world is that you are likely to find new friends from all over the world and from all religious backgrounds. Their motto “Unity in Diversity” holds true and brings the true concept of oneness of all to the forefront every day. And if you are travelling and not close to an ashram, check to see if there is a center in the city or town you are visiting. There you can get a small dose of the beauty of the classical yoga teachings until you are able to travel to an ashram for your next adventure. For more information on the locations and programs at the worldwide Sivananda ashrams and centers worldwide, please visit: www.sivananda.org

Dancing Queen! Ms ‘Twinkle Toes’ Helen goes down memory lane, as she tells us about her mischievous childhood, taking responsibility for her family and being a star at sixteen…
“W
ithin the four walls of our tiny, dilapidated oneroom tenement, laughter and song echoed, throughout our poverty-stricken lives. The hardships, which might have swamped any other family, did not kill the little joys that came our way.” At the age of 10, Helen was a mother to her baby sister Jenny and brother Roger! Their mother, a nurse, used to leave home early, thrusting all the household responsibilities on Helen. Though her mind

was always on play, even when engrossed in a game, she would never forget the baby’s meal times. Like an alarm clock, on the dot she’d dash into the house, hurriedly mix the feed, put the bottle into Jenny’s mouth, with a pillow supporting it, and race out again and continue the game. “I remember never getting along with my brother. I resented the fact that he was my mother’s favourite, and would always have his way (wrong or right) with her. He had a very delicate nose, so every time
he would complain about me, I’d punch him on the nose and it would bleed. But he’d make sure I got a thrashing by showing a blood-stained shirt to Mother when she got back. I was so mischievous that even until the age of 18 I got a hiding. “When we lived behind Mac Ronells (in Bandra, Mumbai), I’d sneak into the back where they used to make the patties and pastries, fill the front of my uniform with eats, run into the graveyard just behind and sit and share them with my friends. Another thing I loved was guavas. An old lady living opposite had a tree seasonally laden with them. Straight from school, I’d climb up the tree and collect as many as I could. One day she spied me, and let the dog loose. He headed straight for me and
barked his head off. For three hours she refused to take the dog away and kept me sitting there in tears. After that I forgot about stealing the guavas or even eating one. “In the evenings we used to go to Bandstand to play. Jenny was too young to play with us, so I’d take off all her clothes and make her sit in a puddle with plenty of shells around to keep her busy, and then proceed with my game. Naturally, the little one had a perpetual cold 365 days of the year, and my mother would wonder why no doctor could cure it! “I paid for this prank too. One day I was playing with a crab, holding it quite close to my mouth. I don’t know how it got at my tongue (I was probably sticking my tongue out) and nobody could get it off until the fishermen came and broke the fangs. My tongue got so swollen that I couldn’t eat or
talk for seven days—to the utter delight of my mother! “I first fell in love at 14. But the only time I could meet him was under the pretext of going to church. I’d tell my mum; I’m going for a visit, just step in, say hello to Jesus and the next 15 minutes, I’d be saying hello to my boyfriend. But I barely remember even holding his hand. Those days, we’d get electric shocks with just standing near each other. “As far as I can recall, we started life from scratch— from absolutely nothing. I left school at the age of 12 in the third standard to learn dancing. I never really liked it. I give credit for whatever I am today to my mother, who was instrumental in fostering my interest in dancing. I used to detest those long hours of practice which I had to put in, because my mind was always on my friends playing outside. Only the cane in my mummy’s

hand, kept my mind on dancing. I trained under Miss Rati Bhappo and specialised in the Manipuri and Kathak. “When not dancing or playing I would keep busy with house work. My mother was a stickler for cleanliness and wanted the place spick and span, when she returned from work. I would clean and scrub everything myself only to be saved a spanking and win my mother’s smile.” The only thing which Helen missed out on in life was the love of her father. “That’s why I have a father complex and am always looking for a father image in my relationships.” Emerging from this hard but happy childhood, Helen gradually discarded her young, carefree days for a responsible working life. Not out of choice, but sheer necessity. She was compelled to take over the task of bringing home the bread for the family.

THE HOUSE ON CARNAVAL STREET
In the Arctic Ocean, the US Coast Guard icebreaker Terra Nova batters its way through the pack ice. There shouldn’t be anyone near them for hundreds of miles. But then a lone skier, halfdead with cold, emerges out of the snow. His name is Tom Anderson, and he is the only survivor of a disaster at Zodiac Station, a scientific research base deep in the Arctic Circle. He tells an incredible story of scientists and spies, of lust and greed, of jealousy, mayhem and murder. But his tale simply doesn’t add up. Whose blood is smeared across his clothes? Why is there a bullet hole through the jacket he’s wearing? It’s clear that more was going on at Zodiac Station than Anderson is telling.
Intimate honest and touching, this is the story of Deborah Rodriguez’s often hilarious journey of self-discovery. Forced to flee her life in Afghanistan she leaves behind her friends her possessions and her two beloved businesses: a hair salon and a coffee shop. But life proves no easier ‘back home’. After a year living in California where she teeters on the edge of sanity Deborah makes a decision: she’s going to get the old Deb back. So at the age of fortynine she packs her life and her cat Polly into her Mini Cooper and heads south to a pretty seaside town in Mexico. Home is now an unassuming little house on Carnaval Street.

RUSTOM AND THE LAST STORYTELLER OF ALMORA By Gaurav Parab
A train stops at a railway station. A young woman jumps off. She looks Indian, yet she is somehow not. The sudden violence of what happens next leaves the other passengers gasping. The train terminates at Jarmuli, a temple town by the sea. Here, among pilgrims, priests and ashrams, three old women disembark only to encounter the girl once again. What is someone like her doing in this remote corner, which attracts only worshippers? The full force of the evil and violence beneath the serene surface of the town becomes evident when their lives overlap and collide. Unexpected connections are revealed between devotion and violence, friendship and fear as Jarmuli is revealed as a place with a long, dark past that transforms all who encounter it.
Rustom Iraqiwalla, a once-rich, green-eyed Parsi man, is all set to blow his brains out at his best friend’s wedding. Debt-ridden and marked by the mafia, this is the only way he can secure his family’s future and atone for all the rotten choices he has made in his life. This extraordinary situation comes by way of his grandfather Fali’s last will that states Rustom shall inherit the family fortune if he kills himself in a public place with the former’s eponymous gun. By turns, dark and humorous, quirky and dead serious, Rustom and the Last Storyteller of Almora is a scintillating debut about a man ready to embrace death to redeem his life.

AESOP’S FABLES
The Two Pots Two pots had been left on the bank of a river, one of brass, and one of earthenware. When the tide rose they both floated off down the stream. Now the earthenware pot tried its best to keep aloof from the brass one, which cried out: “Fear nothing, friend, I will not strike you.” “But I may come in contact with you,” said the other, “if I come too close; and whether I hit you, or you hit me, I shall suffer for it.”
ORIGAMI BANNERS
Lesson: The strong and the weak cannot keep company
The Horse and the Stag The horse had the plain entirely to himself. A stag intruded into his domain and shared his pasture. The horse, desiring to revenge himself on the stranger, requested a man, if he were willing, to help him in punishing the stag. The man replied, that if the horse would receive a bit in his mouth, and agree to carry him, he would contrive very effectual weapons against the stag. The horse consented, and allowed the man to mount him. From that hour he found that, instead of obtaining revenge on the stag, he had enslaved himself to the service of man. Lesson: He who seeks to injure others often injures only himself.

The Two Crabs One fine day two crabs came out from their home to take a stroll on the sand. “Child,” said the mother, “you are walking very ungracefully. You should accustom yourself, to walking straight forward without twisting from side to side.” “Pray, mother,” said the young
one, “do but set the example yourself, and I will follow you.” Lesson: Example is the best precept

In the course of an average lifetime, while sleeping you might eat around 70 assorted insects and 10 spiders, or more. Eww, right? Los Angeles’ full name is “El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula”. Most people fall asleep in seven minutes. Start counting!!
It is physically impossible for pigs to look up into the sky. The “sixth sick sheik’s sixth sheep’s sick” is believed to be the toughest tongue twister in the English language. Go for it! Rats multiply so quickly that in 18 months, two rats could have over a million descendants.
Like fingerprints, everyone’s tongue print is different. Rubber bands last longer when refrigerated. “Dreamt” is the only English word that ends in the letters “mt”. Almonds are a member of the peach family.
Q: Why don’t you see giraffes in Jr. KG? A: Because they’re all in High School!
Q: What goes up when the rain comes down? A: An umbrella.
Q: What do you get when you cross a fridge with a radio? A: Cool Music.
Q: What kind of lights did Noah use on the Ark? A: Flood lights!
Q: What did the stamp say to the envelope? A: Stick with me and we will go places!
Q: Why did the belt go to jail? A: Because it held up a pair of pants!

MI
Hi, I travelled from VGA to BLR on flight LB666 BANN ERthisSmorning. This was my first flight with Air Costa and I was a bit apprehensive about it. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the brand new aircraft, comfortable seats, decent legroom, professional and responsive cabin crew and the food options on board. Keep up the good work. I wish you all the success for the future. Regards, Ashish Joshi
Hi, I flew with Air Costa from Jaipur to Bengaluru on the 8th of May 2015. The Stuart brothers were very friendly, hospitable and kind. They not only made me and my son’s journey comfortable, but also made sure my son’s spirits were kept up even after getting injured while climbing the plane. They continuously have him free goodies, spoke to him, regularly checked on him and were very courteous. I would fly Air Costa again. Thanks! Lipishree
It gives me immense pleasure to declare that we enjoyed the flight journey from Hyderabad to Bengaluru and back to Hyderabad. The style of navigation by the pilots was very impressive, and the crew’s hospitality too was also very commendable. With best wishes, Dr Dilip Kumar Vinnakota

Self-acceptance: The Secret of Success!
“Self-approbation, when found in truth and a good conscience, is a source of some of the purest joys known to man.” — C. Simmons If you want the world to accept you, you have to first accept yourself! The worst humiliation is selfaccusation. Ray Emerson says, “all is well and wisely put, only talents differ”. A human being is a born winner. Unfortunately, as it grows, it learns all the loser traits. It wins a big race, most probably the biggest race in the world wherein 10 to 40 crores of contestants participate. This race takes place in the mother’s womb. The one among crores that reaches the ovum becomes the baby. That’s what you, and I, and everybody in this world are. There is nothing like some are born great and some are born inferior. If an elephant is proud of being big, an ant is proud of being small. If one is proud of being fair-complexioned, one who is dark must feel proud of being black. Accept your body: Lanky or bulky, tall or short, blonde or brunette! Accept your talent: there is nothing like superior talent or inferior talent. A cobbler who stitches shoes well is superior to a professor who doesn’t teach well. Martin Luther king Jr., the man who sacrificed his life for human rights, once said that if one’s job is to sweep the roads, he must do it in such a way that the angels passing over should stop and say with awe, “Who has swept the roads so clean?” The worst complex is the inferiority complex which damages all the faculties in an individual and leads to many other complexes such as ego, snobbery, conceit etc. Accept yourself and start living with confidence and esteem! “For they can conquer who believe they can”, said Vergil.
