What's up Searcy? How's life treating you these days?
Ah man! I'm feeling like a king man. What's up with you?
DJ EMPEROR
Oh me? Thanks for asking. Well I'm on the grind with that Semi Ice project; "Untouchable" the mixtape available now online. Now, my first question for you is how long have you been in the game and who inspired you to pursue your career?
Wow! I have been DJing since 7th grade so it's been a long time. It's been 20 plus years here in Atlanta. My two biggest inspirations were Kid Capri and DJ Nabs. I like Capri because he's a show DJ who loves the art and on the radio side I felt that he was doing things other DJs should have been doing. Where did your name come from?
Well, you know Searcy is my last name but back in the day when I use to DJ on the underground, I was in the clubs 7 nights a week. So when someone looked at our concert calendar, I was scheduled to DJ every show. So this guy Shabbaz from 88.5 "The Bomb" announced me as the Emperor of Hip Hop one night on air and my phone started blowing up with people co-signing. Back then, Atlanta was known mostly for R&B so the underground was the only outlet for hip-hop. What do you feel happened underground radio in Atlanta?
to
I think with the merger of 107.9, which was Hot 97.5 at the time made a big difference. I was one of the original DJs hired from the underground to work for 97.5 and I think we took underground mainstream and reduced that void but I think people still support underground somewhat.
If you could change one thing about radio what would it be?
At times, I think the playlist can be a little to tight. They say the average person only listens to radio 30mins to an hour but I think that's an old rule they still live by and that people want more music and choices. Who do you consider the hottest artist in the city right now? And how do you decide what is hot?
S E A R C Y
I would have to say Gucci in Atlanta. He started underground and came up. The streets love him and even Miley Cyrus says he's her favorite artist right now. I don't think it matters how lyrical you are anymore but instead how much of a buzz you can cause. And now he's dropping commercial hits, which he needed to get those numbers up. Who would you consider the most under rated artist in the city?
That's a hard question man. I would say B.O.B. because I like what he's doing. Lately I find myself mad at hiphop because not enough artist find they're own lane. He's out of Atlanta, he's in his own lane and it's likable. He may change the sound of Atlanta hip-hop. Tell us how vital is the mixtape game to an artist or djs career and where is the game headed?
I feel like mixtapes help because with the drop in record sales, it's the best way to encourage potential fan to support your movement. Look at what happened with Drake. He had a hot mixtape, gave it away constantly and created a major buzz. What's next for The Emperor?
Well, I'm co-owner of CRUNK JUICE along with Lil Jon and some other partners. So I'm excited about that being in the store for sale now. I'm back producing again, the real-estate game, and always djing. I'll be doing that until I'm about 85 but I'm building wealth to show these young cats another way. I appreciate Flyer Promo Atl. for the chance to speak on some history here in the "A', which I am a lot of and thanks to the listeners and supporters for holding me down. by Knowa Logic "The Interviewer"

ALPO BY KNOWA LOGIC "THE INTERVIEWER"
ALPO WHAT'S GOOD MAN? I SEE YOU'VE BEEN VERY BUSY THIS YEAR. LETS START OFF THE INTERVIEW WITH YOU TELLING US WHERE YOU'RE FROM AND WHO WERE SOME OF YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES? I am from Columbus, Ga. born and raised. Nas, OutKast, Scarface, Biggie, Jay-z, Pac,50 cent, Eminem, UGK, Eightball and MJG, Michael Jackson and Prince to name a few. Real music and lyriscism that means something or that is saying something. Those are the artists I like.
LETS TALK ABOUT YOUR HIGHLY ANTICIPATED MIXTAPE MONEY SCHEMES "BRICKS- TRACKS- STACKS". WHO ARE SOME OF THE FEATURE ARTISTS AND WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH DJ DRAMA ON THIS PROJECT? Ray Lavender is one of the featured artist. I didnt want to many rappers on this mixtape because I didn't want people to grab it to hear other artists. You're checking me out, you know. My group Mobside are featured on there also DK . C. Scott, and J Hot helped me put the project together. Drama doing this mixtape was a blessing. If you are going to do it why not with the hottest mixtape DJ in the world. No need to halfstep. I appreiciate it because he didn't have to take a chance on an indie artist coming out of nowhere. Thats real shit. Plus he's dope as hell.
end of the day the listeners still have to wont to here that song to keep it in rotation.
WHAT OTHER MARKETS BESIDE ATLANTA OR YOU PROMOTING IN AND HOW HAVE THEY BE RECEIVING YOU? My city of course, and the whole southern region. I've been received fairly well so far. WHAT'S NEXT FOR ALPO AND WHERE CAN THE READERS STALK YOUR GRIND AS FAR AS WEBSITES? Next for me will be Alpo and the Mobside mixtape M.P.M. Money Power Motivation and a new mixtape with Drama. I know the name but i'm not going to leak it yet. It will be avaliable on all major mixtape websites. You can find me online at Facebook.com/ alpomobside Myspace.com/alpomobside and Twitter.com/alpomobside. Also through Street Talk marketing and promotions through my peoples P. Brown she's a fool and she stay on the grind. An of course Flyer Promo Now Atlanta. Yawl keep doing your thing cause I see this magazine everywhere and right now yawl are whats up in the streets. It looking lovely for Flyer Promo Now Atlanta.
IS THERE SOMETHING ABOUT YOU AS AN ARTIST THAT YOU HOPE OR EXPECT THE PUBLIC TAKE NOTICE OF OR THAT YOU WANT THEM TO REALIZE ABOUT YOU?
PO This is me all day, what you see is what you get. If i said it i did it, done it, or doing it now. Musicially i am crazy i dumbed some things down for this project but for my next one i aint holding anything back.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE CURRENT CONDITION OF HIP HOP? DO YOU FEEL LIKE SOUTHERN ARTIST ARE HELPING IT EVOLVE OR NOT? I think its okay, alot of substance is gone but the money outlets are numerous so thats a plus. I think the southern artist are just doing what they always did real rap, huslter music(trap), crunk, dance songs, bootyshake. If the people that push the buttons pick the songs from here to market and blow that dont have substance thats them a the

IS BACK WITH 'TEFLON DON' AND BIGGER THAN EVER
R
eleasing a rap album with a guest list that reads like the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 is a common move, but not without its risks. Big-name guests can move units and chart positions, but many rappers get overshadowed by their more famous counterparts, and the person who should be the lead winds up coming across as an understudy. Rick Ross, however, avoids that impression on his new album, "Teflon Don," due July 20 on Maybach/Def Jam. It's no easy feat to hold one's own against Jay-Z, Kanye West, Drake and T.I., but Ross manages to keep the album's focus squarely on himself. "I'm fortunate enough to socialize with some of the greatest musicians around," Ross says. "So it made sense for me to go ahead and get them on my record. I wanted to pay attention to all the fine details on this album-I could have gotten someone no one had heard of to sing on certain tracks, but I wanted the best in the business." With such an impressive list of guests and an outsize reputation to match his outsize size, it would've been easy for his label to sit back and let "Teflon Don" sell itself. But Island/Def Jam senior VP of marketing Chris Atlas says the label is rolling out an aggressive marketing effort. "We took the fact that he had so many people working with him on the record and captured it on film and video, which we are releasing around the Web," Atlas says. "Rick has been working nonstop since the last record [2009's "Deeper Than Rap," which has sold 434,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan], feeding stuff to his lifestyle and street base. He's put out three or four mixtapes, and there is constant messaging to his core."
Atlas says Ross is on a 10-city promotional tour and making club and radio station appearances. Those visits seem to be paying off: The first single from "Teflon Don," "Super High," is No. 32 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, while new single "B.M.F. (Blowing Money Fast)" moves 39-27 on the list. The video for "Super High," featuring Stacey Dash (whom Ross calls a "classy young lady"), has 900,000 views on YouTube; MTV, among other outlets, has just accepted the video for "B.M.F." The label will also release a limited run of Ross action figures, a nod to his passion for collecting them. "Teflon Don" is also the subject of a heavy outdoor, online and TV advertising push. Atlas adds that Ross is starting to work with brands, due in part to his recent co-management deal with Sean "Diddy" Combs. For instance, he's using the nickname 'Ricky Rozay,' so some champagne brands are expressing a desire to do something." Ross is mostly concentrating on dispelling some of the negative press that has dogged him and steering the focus back to his music. He seems unperturbed when discussing a recent trademark infringement lawsuit filed by similarly named former drug dealer "Freeway" Ricky Ross. Ross the rapper says the suit was dismissed and even seems forgiving of the reformed kingpin, saying, "It's not personal. He's down on his luck." At this point, Ross would rather just enjoy the good life, cruising in his Maybach and getting his season tickets to see LeBron James play with the Miami Heat. And he offers advice to fans who haven't yet made it to the "livin' large" lifestyle. "Blast my record out the windows of your Honda Accord," he says. "And if anyone gives you grief, you look them right in the eye and tell them Rick Ross told you wealth begins in the heart." atlanta

Tony D what's good man? Can you tell our readers how you got started as a DJ and how long you've been in the music business. Whats up!!! Well I got started djing just by watching videos and other dj’s from back in the day. Of course I use to pop lock and dance a little bit but that’s how it started. I have been in the business of djing for about 27 years. Who inspired you the most and are there any major artist you would like to work with? Jam Master J inspired me the most cause he was a cool dude when I met him. I would love to work with Jeezy, t.i., luda, Gucci mane, you know a-town down. What would you say makes you different or stand out from all the other's? I stayed connected with the hood and keeping it real with my people. Plus giving them what they want by performing my best when they come to the club. Do you think today's technology has a positive or negative effect on the music industry and how does it play a role in your career? It has a little of both. Internet has change the game a lot for real.It kind of helps my dj career with advertising tho. Helps me get known the the rest of the world. Where do you see yourself 2 yrs from now? What should people expect from DJ Tony D? Like gansta grill!!!!! I want to be that dj that everyone come to for mix tapes and shows. People should expect hard work from me and will always keep the party crunk. How can our readers keep up with ya, where can they find out more info? You can find me at djtonyd@mail.com or Deejay Tony D on facebook. FO SHO atlanta

Drake by Jessica Williams
D
rake’s first full-length album, “Thank Me Later,” enters The Billboard 200 at #1, with his first-week sales at 447,000. This constitutes one of the biggest openings ever for the debut album by an artist. Toronto born artist Drake entered into the entertainment industry in 2001, playing the role of Jimmy Brooks on “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” a basket ball star who became physically disabled after being shot by one of hisclassmates. His role successfully ended in 2009 after 138 episodes. In 2006, Drake released his first mixtape, Room for Im-provement, followed by his second mixtape release Comeback Season, which featured a song that began to substantiate Drake as an artist “Replacement Girl” featuring Trey Songz, making him the first unsigned Canadian rapper to have his music video features on 106 & Park. In 2008 Lil Wayne was given some of Drake’s music and the rest is musical history.
Big Boi
by Jessica Williams
A
ntwan Andre Patton a.k.a. Big Boi is an American Hip Hop artist, producer, and true southern trendsetter. One half of the Super group “OUTKAST,” he is now focused on the release of his upcoming solo album, Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty. Leaking the first official single off his solo album “Shutterbug” in April of 2010, Big Boi is proving to that he doesn’t need Andre 3000 to make noise in the music game. With his album featuring singles with Jamie Foxx, T.I., Gucci Mane and B.O.B., his journey which started at Jive Records has taken him back to the man who gave him his first deal, Antonio “L.A.” Reid at Def Jam Records. With so many former LaFace staff working under Reid at Def Jam, Big Boi compares his situation to a family reunion. “I’m happy that I’m signed to Def Jam a couple of weeks ago. Jive let me go. I asked to be released due to creative differences. I’m back with the man who understands my music and the creative process. Much respect to Barry Weiss at Jive though. Much thanks to him for respecting my craft and letting me do what I gotta do..” Big Boi felt his time at Jive Records coming to an end when the label asked him to record his own version of Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop.” “I’ve never been a radio-driven artist. We are Soul Funk crusaders.” This smooth transition is just what Big Boi needs to find himself at the top of the charts. atlanta
