C

ulture Climax sat down with hip hop’s next superstar, Laws while he was in the Orlando for Leaders of the New Cool hip hop showcase. Representing Central Florida he moved to Spring Hill, near Tampa and has been there ever since. It’s not too often that artists from Central Florida get the attention that he’s getting, and we couldn’t be happier. Not only does Laws have ridiculous flow, content and delivery, his personality says it all. He’s humble, friendly and sarcastic he lets it shine through on his most recent mixtapes 4:57 and 5:01 Overtime. The Justice League cosign and industry support helped land him a record deal with Warner Brothers. Our exclusive video interview with Laws is available on CultureClimax.com, where he talks about inspirations, favorite albums, and gives advice to fellow artists. Make sure you log onto CultureClimax.com to peep the video and download his mixtapes! You can also follow him on twitter @lawshiphop.

unday, August 15th Miss.‘Window Seat”graced the stage at the House Blues. The crowd was a direct reflection of her - eclectic, energetic & appreciative. Stepping out with a blonde mohawk, mary poppins dress, a Louie Vutton belt & 6-inch paten leather boots, Erykah Badu opened the show with cuts from her latest album “New Amerkah Part 2” and audience sang

word for word. Unexpected is the expected when it comes to an Badu show and she did not disappoint. Instead of doing all new material, she performed a montage of her past hits with a blend of old school rap classics. After the show, I was blessed to ask her about her transformation as an artist during a private meet & greet and she replied in one solace statement; “I am not afraid”. Ms. Badu is warm, approachable & a “classic” talent. Orlando was fortunate to have her caliber of artistry in our city. Check out CultureClimax.com for LOTNC video recap.

ARE YOU THE

By Antonio “E$CO” Williams Edited by Kris Kinville

Sneek

The Puppetmaster FLYERPROMONOW & TALKOFORLANDO.COM PRESENT THIS WEEK’S TALK OF ORLANDO,

SNEEK, THE PUPPET MASTER. NOT ONLY DOES HE HAVE ONE OF THE BEST STREET PROMOTIONS TEAMS IN THE ORLANDO AREA, BUT HE AND HIS CREW “HUSTLE 4 IT ENTERPRIZES” ARE FOCUSED ON PUTTING ORLANDO ON THE MAP WHEN IT COMES TO THE HIP HOP GAME. SNEEK INVITED ME INTO HIS

8

ON THE ARTIST TIP, WHO HAVE YOU WORKED WITH IN THE ORLANDO AREA? (Laughs) Well of course my team “Hustle 4 It Entertainment”…I always stay true to that. I have also worked with producers like the Headliners, and a few other local producers. I’m trying to work with any everyone in an effort to get music from Orlando in the mainstream…at least that’s what we are shooting for.

Photography by Lensformed Photography • 407-690-7568

TELL ORLANDO WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT IT IS YOU DO? (Rubbing his chin) Hmmm..Who am I? I guess the verdict is still out. I’m still figuring that out myself and hopefully by the end of the article you all will have an idea of who I am. I started promoting and writing out in Memphis and decided to move out here and do my promo thing. When it comes to street promotions, everyone does it, but I try to be different and innovative. The first thing that people don’t realize about street promo is that it is something to be proud of. Many people say that it’s beneath them, but one thing I feel strong about is that if you give you all to something it will always make you successful. Whether I’m doing street promotions or laying down some tracks those are the words that I live by.

HOME TO DISCUSS WHAT HE IS ABOUT AND HIS UP & COMING ARTIST STATUS. WALKING INTO THE BUILDING IS REMINISCENT OF A SCENE OUT OF THE MOVIE SCARFACE AND SURROUNDED BY HIS TEAM & 1ST LADY OF HIS CREW, WE TALK ABOUT ORLANDO’S NEXT RISING STAR.

WITH ALL THE TALENT IN CENTRAL FLORIDA, WHY DO YOU FEEL THAT AN ORLANDO ARTIST HAS NOT BLOWN UP? In my opinion and my opinion only; People need to smile on their haters & teach them to become innovators. The ones who are closer to being up there need to support the ones that are coming up and unfortunately there is little or no support. The best thing you can do is just love what you do and put your heart and soul into it. If the Lord says that’s the path you need to follow, then follow. WHAT CD’S DID YOU LISTEN TO IN YOUR CAR TODAY?

Well to be completely honest I listen to my own music. I listen to my songs….just to be straight up. I focus on making my craft better and trying to make the best music that I can make. Then I also focus on my street promotions because that helps market my music as well. In the end I want to build a brand so I’m branding myself & my team.

FOR ALL THE BEAUTIFUL LADIES OF ORLANDO WHO MIGHT BE READING THIS ARTICLE, IS SNEEK SINGLE? (While laughing he spits out his drink.) I’m Available & Open for a great discussion… (Laughing) I’m single for the night and maybe tomorrow. WHAT PROMOTERS HAVE YOU WORKED WITH IN ORLANDO? Well first of all, shout out to Moses (BigBeatz Ent), TalkofOrlando.com, Tony Khuu & a few others who will remain nameless…there’s a lot shady promoters in Orlando. But these are the ones that I deal with and they have always been REAL with me since day one.

WHAT DO YOU SAY TO PEOPLE SAYING THAT ARTISTS LIKE JAY Z, WHO MADE THAT TRANSITION, ARE REALLY SELL OUTS? (Laughs) They must be some broke people with no real vision or goals. That’s the only way they can make themselves feel important. THERE ARE A LOT OF ARTIST WHO COME OUT SOUNDING THE SAME,

TALKING ABOUT THE SAME TOPICS. WHAT SEPARATES YOU FROM OTHER ARTISTS?

Well I’m not afraid to walk in my own skin. And sure there are a million people who walk & talk like me but my lyrics and my songs are for everyone who is a go-getter. Whether you get up in the morning and punch a clock, or go outside and hit the block, I have an experience to share with everyone. That’s the mind frame that I’m trying get across. We all have something to share.

ARE THERE ANY SHOUT OUTS THAT YOU WANT TO GIVE? God First…then Lens Photography, Esco & Glins from TalkofOrlando. com, Moses of Big Beatz & of course the Hustle4It family…I love yall!!! www.facebook.com/Sneekdapuppetmaster Twitter @SneekPassem

If you think that you are the Talk of Orlando, you can submit your information to talkoforlando@gmail. com subject line “I am the Talk of Orlando”

AS AN ARTIST, WHAT ARTIST ARE YOU INSPIRED BY WHO HAS MADE A TRANSITION TO BUSINESSMAN/ ARTIST? I definitely like the move that Jay Z made from artist to full on businessman. I also like the move that little Wayne made with Young Money. He has an entire brand, the perfect combination of promotions & hip hop. You just have to respect power moves that are made in that fashion. It keeps me inspired; they really learned to balance both.

On the Twirl

I. Like. To. Twirl and I cannot lie!

You other twirlers can’t deny!

The summer days are flying away and with the approaching holiday, it’s almost all over! All summer long we have twirled through several events that set themselves apart from the regular parties. This week is no different! We all look forward to that Labor Day weekend, because we know there is some GOOD times to be had. So, where will I be twirlin for this upcoming holiday weekend? We all know you can never go wrong when twirlin with Frontline Promotions! Daytona Beach is the scene set for this Labor Day weekend.

14

The American Music Festival will be going on throughout the entire weekend with such large national acts as Tony Benett and the Jonas Brothers, and Frontline Promotions have teamed up to promote the urban music concert side. Headlining this concert series on Friday September 3, 2010 is the amazing Usher, and of course our “Promo Kings” over at Frontline will be hosting the official Usher concert after party at The Plaza Resort & Spa in Daytona Beach. But the weekend doesn’t stop there. On Saturday September 4, 2010, they are throwing a huge “Beach & Pool Party” at the same location from 3pm-dusk. Frontline keeps it poppin on Saturday night as the official after party to the Bethune Cookman University vs Edward Waters College Classic football game. To make this weekend even more worthy for twirlin is the “Frontline Party Package”, which includes discounted hotel rates at The Plaza Resort & Spa, and admission to all their events they have for that weekend. You can visit www.ticketannex. com for those details. “The name of the weekend says it all”, Frontline tells me, “Its a ‘Destination Weekend’. This is something for the young, fly, and flashy”. Well, we know I am certainly all three, so I certainly will be twirling!

FASHION&LIFESTYLENOW If you see someone with terrible fashion, or they just might need a little Pinky advise, send a picture and comment to

pinkyscorner@yahoo.com. You can also find me on Facebook!

the summer races to come to an end, all of Orlando’s promoters are pulling out the big guns! Everybody wants to have the best party of the summer. With so much going on, it’s hard for your Starlet to keep track! What I’m beginning to see is some effort in stepping out the box with these parties and events. That’s when you really have Starlets attention and attendance...when you do something a little more creative than throw a couple of rhyming words together and call it a party. Check out where I stepped it out this week!

AFTER WORK RELEASE @ VINTAGE

How many happy hours have come and gone in this city? Take you time counting....I’ll wait. Exactly! Too many to count. Well, the Firm boys have done it again! Seems like everything they promote is a smash! Every Friday starting at 5pm you can catch some fantastic drink specials and an amazing DJ lineup including DJ Freefall and DJ Pointblanc....with free cover! This happy hour is so crazy, you’ll party right through the night! Especially with Grey Goose bottles going for only $60! Be sure to catch me there next week. Hoping they let your Starlet host it one time! LOL

CLASH OF THE BARBERS @ THE DOUBLETREE Can’t deny, this city is doing way too much with these hair shows. None of them turn out with great reviews. However, I was certainly looking August 8 th 20 10 forward to this new spin on hair shows, with the cutting competitions and all. I was quite surprised, not to mention impressed, by the setup, with the full stage exposing each barber in action, and the long catwalk for showing off their work, all the way to the different vendors set up for our shopping pleasure. The host G Money was quite hilarious...at times. Other times, he was on his “G Money” thing, if you know what I mean. Jersey also hosted during the first half of the show. There was a fashion show put on by Set It Off Productions, and a couple live performance by a couple local artists including Lil Wop, PI Bang, YoungSlime, and Omeez. Some of Orlando’s favorites in the building include Garfield, Disco JR, and Brandi Nikole. We only have a couple more weeks of summer, and the party scene is heating up! So much going on, I don’t even know what I’m doing this week! LOL. Have any suggestions or perhaps you’re throwing a hot event? Send that info to starletinthestreets@gmail. com. Until then, you know what to do! LET’S CELEBRATE!

A weekly Entertainment, Legal News & Advice column from Shannon A. Ligon, The Entertainment & Legal Diva

Dear Shannon, I am working on a pilot for a reality show and wanted to know what is the best way to ensure that it will be entertaining so it will get picked up? Any ideas? -Reality Driven Dear Reality: Besides needing an amazing cast, you must have an equally killer plot for each episode. Research this genre of media by noting why certain shows are more successful then others and then implement those elements into yours. Above all your show MUST be entertaining; whether by drama, celebrity appearances or finding a niche and interesting area that’s gone underdeveloped in reality shows. Planning and great script writing are very important as well. Network with some industry professionals and pick their brains for added advice. Best of luck! reseason football is like the appetizer before the entrée. It’s a temporary satisfaction for what is about to come. I’m enjoying my appetizer but I can’t wait for the real thing. On Thursday, September 9th every football fan will get a taste when the New Orleans Saints take on the Minnesota Vikings in the 2010 NFL season opener. While waiting on the “main course” I was able to see Tim Tebow make his NFL debut. Although the Broncos lost, golden boy Timmy did a good job. If you know Tebow then you know it wouldn’t have been a game if he didn’t run one in the end zone. It’s just too bad that by the time he did the game was over. Despite his good debut the Broncos have still decided to keep Kyle Orton as their starting QB. While I’m on the topic of running, Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans has set his goal to run for 2,500 yards this season. Whether Johnson runs 2,500 or 2,001 yards it will make history. No player has ever run for 2,000 yards back to back. I’m not a Titans fan but I am a supporter of our local athletes so I’m rooting for him. In addition to watching preseason games I’m also tuning into HBO’s Hard Knocks to satisfy my football hunger. Between Rex Ryan’s trucker mouth, Darelle Revis holding out and of course fine men Chris Johnson with their shirts off I’m hooked. Seriously though the Jets look and sound like they are ready to prove why they should have been the team playing the Saints in last season’s Superbowl. I’m no hater but I’m only worried about one team making it

to the Superbowl and no offense, it’s not the Jets. I am going to keep my eye on them though because they are a team to watch out for. They have made the necessary adjustments in order to stay relevant in the competition for the best team in the league. I don’t have a clue who the best will be this season. All I know is that I’m excited that football season has started again. Besides I’m sick of seeing baseball in the top ten plays on Sportscenter. I’m ready for Chris Burman and his game recaps, tailLombardi Trophy gating parties, and overzealous fans. Speaking of fans, if you don’t have a favorite team pick one now and stick with them. Don’t be a bandwagon rider.

30 Second Timeout This timeout is for Lance Stephenson, a 2nd round draft pick by the Pacers. Stephenson was arrested for second-degree assault. The victim was his girlfriend/baby momma. The girlfriend was treated for neck and head injuries because she was allegedly pushed down the stairs by Stephenson. There are better ways to handle things than putting your hands on a female. Shame on you! I know most people aren’t in to therapy but he needs some. Especially considering that he is only 19 and this isn’t his first arrest. Lance Stephenson

JONES INTERVIEW

This is your first appearance in the Flyer Promo Now... tell us a little about yourself. Before we get into that... I’m partnering with Frontline Promotions to bring my B-Day Party/ THE VIRGO BASH to Rain Ultra Lounge on September the 2nd (First Thursday)!! I will be introducing two new HOT female Hosts/Socialites to Central Florida’s nightlife scene and giving out Free Shots to Virgos ALL NITE! Cameras will filming... it’s gonna be a Movie, Ok! Now that I got that out of the way... My name is Jermaine Jones but people refer to me as JONES. I’m a Recording Artist/Songwriter and Promoter. I’m from Orlando but I began recording music and performing in Tallahassee. Since I released my first mixtape titled “Keep Up With The Jones” in 2006, I have performed on MTV (My Super Sweet 16), starred in an award winning independant movie titled “Underground President”, done shows from ATL to MIA and much more! To be a new face on the scene in your hometown you have accomplished quite a bit. What has proven to be your biggest inspiration? My inspiration changed as I progressed in my experience. In the beginning it was the rush of the ‘battle’ and the attention I got from ripping my hottest verse in front of a crowd of my peers. I fell in love with Rap in the cafeteria at Dr. Phillips highschool. I used to have the lunch room going crazy! After I began performing, it was the reaction I got from the crowd and the power to touch people in a special way. Once I started getting paid it was my daughter, my security and a lifestyle. You seem like a pretty focused and driven person. What are goals for yourself in the entertainment industry? I want to be a successful Entertainer, Businessman, and Liason to bridge the gap between the ‘Gifted Unknown Artist’ and the rest of the world! The first to accomplish all three from Orlando...

Q: A:

Sounds you have some pretty big shoes to fill... Are you currently affiliated with any groups or

labels? Well, I have my own company called U.F.O. Entertainment. It stands for United For Orlando. I feel like the reason we (Orlando) dont have a serious National Movement is because we lack Unity, not Talent! We are a full service Entertainment Company specializing in Marketing, Promoting and Branding for Special Events, Performing Artists, Businesses and whoever else might need our services. My business partners are Mike “Mirra” Williams and Rufus “Deuce” McDonald. Shout out to my brother Tay Baby as well as One Cash, Rell Skeet, Fresh & G, all my Kings (friends) on Oakridge Road, Strech Ent and Big O Productions... those are my people! That’s who I REALLY mess with... I think the purpose of your movement makes it very unique and empowering for Orlando. By the way...who are the 2 female Hosts/Socialites you mentioned earlier. When Sytonnia moved to ATL she left a void in the nightlife scene here and created opportunity for a new female to step in. Well I bumped into 2 equally beautiful and talented ladies with eletrifying personalities whom I felt were just what the city needed... Kay Wright and Miss Smallz. Superbad, superfun, and superfly... that describes them both! It has been a pleasure interviewing you and I’m really excited to see what you have in store. What can we expect from JONES in 2010??

CAN YOU BUY ME A DRINK? KEYS TO SECURING A LIQUOR SPONSORSHIPS

You have this fabulous event. It’s the hottest party in your city and you want to link your event with a liquor sponsor. Any liquor company should jump on board and want to be a part of it? Right? Wrong? Truth of the matter is most liquor companies don’t care so much about your “party” as they do about moving and selling their product to the venue and at your event. At the end of the day; it comes down to how many cases can you ensure them they will sell to the Venue? You as a Promoter decide that you need $5000 (which is always the magic #). Most Corporations plan their budgets and money allocation a year out. Before you approach XYZ Liquor here is what you should have: 1. Decide what liquor company matches your brand 2. What do you want the liquor company to do? Free Liquor/ Open Bar, Money, POS (Point of Sale) 3. What will you offer the liquor company? Advertising, Product placement etc 4. Meet with the Venue to decide if they want to do the promotion *this is the most important. You are actually a minor part. The decision of how you get the money is between the liquor distributor and the Venue. The reason for this is Florida’s “Tied House Evil” Law. This Law was set into effect after prohibition. (Via www.goldcoastbeverage.com) Once prohibition ended, Florida passed laws to create the distributor tier to end what became known as “tied house evil”. Tied house evil regulations are designed to promote a level playing field among retailers and to prevent: a) the elimination of competition and b) over-promotion of alcohol. It accomplishes this by prohibiting: • Purchasing shelf space (carrying extra products) • Purchasing exclusivity • Furnishing equipment (like draft coolers) • Indebting retailer (creating a feeling of obligation) • Discriminatory promotional practices or pricing • Since all retailers get the same pricing to run their business to provide the public with the most diverse mix of products at the lowest possible price. 5. Write a Professional Proposal (no more than four pages) that should include points 1,2, 3 and then submit it to the Liquor company. 6. If the Liquor company and Venue agrees to the terms of your proposal you are all set to build your event Promoters take the time to learn bar operations. If you have any more questions please contact me.

KNOWLEDGENOW

Obama Watch By Roger Caldwell

IS EMERGENCY SPENDING HELPING THE ECONOMY? On August 10, 2010, the lawmakers held a one day session, and pushed through a $26 billion job bill, that they say will save 300,000 jobs. It is ironic that the lawmakers do not have to do any research to justify their votes and decisions. The Democrats have identified a need with limited information and they felt that they needed to act before the children returned to school. Seventy-five percent of the nation’s school districts are trying to operate with fewer teachers and many are finding out that their resources are being cut. Many of these districts will be forced to layoff teachers and support personnel because funding is not available. With the emergency spending bill $10 billion of the money will be used to save 160,000 teachers jobs. On the surface this appears to be a viable solution to many of the nation’s states shortfall. But one of the problems with distributing billions of dollars is the money rarely reaches its destination intact. Many times with the red tape, fraud, and the politics, only about half of the money reaches its destination and the rest of the money is spent on bureaucratic paperwork and bookkeeping. The Democrats believe that they are doing the right thing, but many of the Republicans think this is wasteful spending. At the present time the Democrats have the majority, therefore there is very limited discussion, but someone will have to start asking the question, “Can the federal government continue to bail out the states?”

26

With the additional emergency money, $16 billion will help keep 140,000 police officers and public workers on the payroll and help states with their Medicaid payments. Also during the one day session, an additional $33 billion will go to Afghanistan, because the money from the budget has been depleted. Basically all of this money will have to be borrowed, and the United States will be forced to pay back this money with interest. It is obvious that the Treasury Department will be forced to do some creative bookkeeping, when they are borrowing money for states that are in the red, and two wars that have cost the country one trillion dollars. At some point, it would appear that someone in Congress would decide that operating from a deficit is the wrong way to run a country. The states have already identified and determined that their budgets for 2010-2012, there will be a shortfall of $116 billion. This will mean that most states will be forced to increase their taxes and cut their services. It will impact every element of our lives and we will pay more money for inferior and less services. During the voting 308 to 114 lawmakers agreed to increase the funding of a war that they know they cannot win is ludicrous. Spending one trillion dollars on two wars, and America has reached the point where we can no longer pay our bills. Every week we are borrowing millions and then we give the money to our enemies who are supposed to be our friends. Eventually we will be forced to get our financial houses in order. Emergency spending is an indicator that as a country we are exceeding our initial budgets and we need to balance the books. Overspending will eventually put our country in deeper debt, and President Obama promised the country that he would balance the budget. Emergency spending is destroying our economy and an indicator that we cannot balance our budget and our books. It is time for President Obama and his administration to make prudent financial decisions, and balance our budget and operate in the black.
