LIL D’S 5 DO’S AND DONT’S O F PA R TY P R O M O T I O N (Dedicated to Djs & Janky Promoters) By Gadget B. Jackson
1 . Deliver a CD that is hand written with a sharpie. That is not cool. Even in a case, that’s not cool. Make sure it is marketable and it looks professional when you come here. 2 . Never leave your CD at the radio station without any !!1st!! Presentation is the biggest thing. When you bring your CD to the radio station, you want to have you’re artwork in order. You want to have a BIO and some contact information.
These simple instructions can help you have a more successful event.
2 . Make sure your music is mastered. When I play your CD I want it to sound just as crisp as if I put a Jay-Z CD in the player.
3 . Make sure your music is registered, BMI or Ascap. Make sure your music is fingerprinted. You want to have a BDS and media base on your song so you can follow up and see where your music is being played and how your music is being played. 4 . Also, make sure you have the clean version of your song ready. No program director ever wants to slide in your CD and start hearing you cussing right off the bat. Make sure you also put an instrumental on there. 5 . Also you want to work your music in other markets. Just because you live in Columbus, doesn’t mean you have to stay in Columbus. The music world is a whole lot bigger than this city. So get in the car, drive to Macon and distribute some of your music there, talk to some of the radio DJs. Go over to Montgomery, go to Albany, go to Tallahassee. The point is to work the market.
contact information. I might like your song. I might be ready to play it on the station but I don’t know how to talk to you. I might even want to put you on an upcoming show.
3 . Please don’t give your boys the request line number and tell them to call the station every 5 minutes to play your song. I will listen to your song, and if I like your song and it appears that you have enough street awareness about your song, I will play it. You do not need a team of cheerleaders to call me. If those same people have that same energy in passing out flyers or CDs at the clubs or downtown, they will be able to tap the market in the streets. 4 . Never try to pay the DJ to play your record. Doesn’t work. Never has and never will. You might role over to Club Sky or Big City Club and be able to pay that DJ for your stuff, but not at the radio station. Your pockets are not deep enough. 5 . Don’t ever give the DJ your music on his personal time. He might be out with his kids or at a restaurant, don’t role up on him like, “hey homeboy I got this song… ”Don’t do that, that’s his personal time. If he’s at a live broadcast or out at the club, that’s the time to give your music to the DJ.

fter working several years for a major insurance company, Melinda Baldwin – Tolbert an aspiring business owner took a leap of faith to become a persistent and determined entrepreneur in the Columbus area. She explains, “By me having faith in God and being obedient to his word, I was able to open my own business, MJ’s Bill Pay and Tax Services (2007).” MJ’s Bill Pay and Tax Services is located in South Columbus and tailors the majority of services, such as bill payment and free home service, to low income families in the area. Melinda is adamant about keeping the business in South Columbus because the services provided help the customers in that community and she appreciates how supportive they have been over the past couple years. MJ’s Bill Pay & Tax Services prepare individuals and small businesses tax returns. The business accepts bill payments for over a hundred different billers, such as, Georgia Power, Atmos Energy, Water Works, Knology, Bellsouth, Mediacom, etc. The business also has Western Union and first month free home phone services. Clients are able to reload their minutes on their phone with any company at the office and the business is also a notary public. On the other hand, Melinda also owns MJ’s Party Rentals (2010) which operates mainly on off tax

season time. It makes parties and events unforgettable by providing the newest Bounce Houses for those that want to spice up any type of party or event. MJ’s Party Rentals is a proud member of SIOTO, the Safe Inflatable Operators Training Organization as well. As for words of advice, Melinda states, “Dream Big! And put God first in all you do. Upon doing so, everything else will fall into place.” She also advises entrepreneurs to develop a business plan and states, “He who fails to plan, is planning to fail.” Another suggestion is to build a successful support system. Without support you can lose focus and get discouraged. She advises others to know your strengths and understand your weaknesses. She believes one should be passionate with their business, never sacrificing integrity. She basically admits that “If you take care of your business, your business will take care of you.” But if you do get lost, she recommends the resources that are right in this city including The Small Business Development Center, located in Columbus State’s Cunningham Center or one might want to join the Chamber of Commerce to explore more opportunities. Getting to know Melinda on a more personal basis, she was born and raised in Columbus. She is married to her high school sweetheart Jack Tolbert Jr. and is the mother of two young children, Jackie Tolbert III, 10, and Ja’Keith Tolbert, 3. She has been very grateful to have a loving and caring husband and family who have been able to always lift her spirits when she was down. She is currently in the process of obtaining a degree in Business with a minor in Human Resource Management from Troy University in order to enhance her knowledge in the field.

I F YOU ASK CRITICS what they think about reality TV you might get this answer, “Reality TV is bad for our society because it is rooted in immorality.” If you were to flip through the channels on your TV, many reality show producers center around this concept, “What sort of outrageous activities can we get people to do for a wad of cash?” Knowing they will make much more money by ratings, it’s somewhat comical to know that people will do anything to come up quick. Because of many of these reality shows, young adults now worship vanity and wealth, rather than virtue and humility. You can even go as far as to say that reality TV reflects what our society has become. We are people who are extremely materialistic and will do anything to be seen on television for the fame and glory and also money, money, money. But is watching someone else’s life more exciting than your own? Are our lives so dull that we want to see how others live? It’s somewhat crazy and disturbing. But on the defensive side, there are viewers that agree that reality TV is the best thing since Gucci Mane got out of jail and Lindsey Lohan checked in. The concepts of many reality shows are fascinating and intriguing, but I must say how many times will 18 men or women fight over one person in the name of “love?” I must admit that reality shows have made TV fun to watch and its more fascinating than a typical written program. It’s entertainment with a kick. And nothing beats seeing someone show their true emotions on the big screen, whether it be crying, fighting, or indecent proposals. People want to view dysfunctional or extreme shows for the action and excitement. So when is it enough? It seems like everyone has a TV show! So what’s the next move? More reality or less? Professional actors are understandably upset about reality television because the programs are no longer based on the skills and talent of actors which means less work for them. And I guess the big questions is, “How real are reality TV shows anyway?” There are shows that claim they are reality based, yet writers hand scripts to encourage a more eye captioning response from its viewers. The producers do a great job at heightening the state of reality and exposing a situation that might have been largely underplayed in real life for the purpose of creating drama. -

o not drink too much. I’ll never forget this date I went on some time ago. It was our second date and I’m thinking, “The last date was fine, so this one should be interesting as well.” He had just gotten this new Mercedes, and I guess he wanted to show it off. He picked me up and we headed to Andre’s. Apparently, the party began in the car. He pulled out a bottle of patron and starting taking shots in his car. I mean at least 6 shots! But it doesn’t stop there. Next he decided to demonstrate how fast the car could go on the highway. While speeding, he continued to say “ah” like Trey Songs, and all I could think about is, “I’m tryna live tomorrow!” It was such a turn off, I never spoke to him again.

KEEPING YOUR RELATIONSHIP STRONG
I
t can be a struggle to maintain a healthy and lasting relationship. Negative issues can cause chaos within a couple and destroy what could have been a happy home. Those issues could arise from something within the relationship or outside influences. Infidelity, financial problems, gossip, abuse and secrets are just some of the many things that can damage a couple; sometimes to the point of no return. Nevertheless, have no fear we have weapons to fight the good fight.
First,
just about obedience, but the act of surrendering. Isn’t that the main objective of love; to have someone surrender their heart to you? Submission allows the other party involved to feel wanted and needed. You are not becoming a doormat or losing strength; you are simply channeling your strength into your loved one.
Third, we all have heard that money is the root of all evil;
and that holds true especially in relationships. Finances can drag a couple through the mud. It is highly important to set goals and create a budget within your means to make life comfortable for your family. The same financial problems that can cause stress to a single person are ten times worse for relationships because it opens Open communication allows us to be aware the door for blame and finger of what is going on in the mind of our partner. Expression of our innermost thoughts gives our significant other the strength to trust, which is also critical to relationship survival. The communication has to be honest and upfront; there is no holds barred when it comes to discussions with your loved one. However, it is best practice for your discussions to be respectful and not abusive or accusatory. Respect is imperative. Not only should communication be respectful, but each and every action taken should be done with respect for your relationship. The Golden Rule is also as important in relationships as it is in daily life. Treating your partner as you would have your partner treat you is a given. Common courtesy and consideration for the other person goes a very long way. Submission on both ends is also a key factor. Submission gets a bad name sometimes, but it is not quite what it is believed to be. Submission is not

Last and most importantly; put GOD first in your life and relationship. The love of GOD will filter through the two of you and pour out for the world to see. When GOD is the head of anything; the results are always immaculate. Trusting in HIM will give you power beyond your own understanding. It will allow you to see the good in your loved one and see your enemies for what they are. Laughter, love, respect and trust will be your weapons. Haters and gossip will have little to no effect on you. You will be able to decipher the real from the fake and you will have a calm within that will permit you to deal accordingly. e the best parent you can be but, cut your self some slack! As a new parents or having a new born all over again can be an over whelming feeling. New born all have different styles, no matter how different it may be it well come to a better place and one thing is universal :Life as you knew it has changed.
valuable than ever. There are a thousand things in a day that can demand your attention, and learning to tune out things that aren’t urgent will help you tremendously. For example if the phone rings, changing a diaper or having a quiet nap together ect, let the caller leave a message your hands is full.
As you become acquainted with your “new life” many people will likely offer you advice. Some of it may be useful to you, but you will no doubt embrace some advice wholeheartedly. Remember the following six point to help you through the early days at home with your little bundle of joy and beyond.
Point 3. When you can get good help use it.
Point 1. You don’t have to be Perfect You are responsible for the basic, like providing nourishment and care to your newborn. You are not required to make sure that your child has the best toy/ stroller/sling on the market, or respond to every new challenge with the perfect solution. Your baby will be fine with parents who are “good enough” especially one who realize that perfection doesn’t exist, love will help you along. Your baby just want your love, Name brands give parents identity not your baby.
Point 2. Protect your time Now that you are a parents, your time is more
Don’t be shy about accepting offers from family and friends to come and bring you food and to do your laundry, or watch the baby while you run to the store and pay bills. But paying bill on online always help me. And most of all who ever is ill should not come over.
Point 4. Trust your parental instinct many parents worry is their new born is sleeping enough, is the stool a normal consistency? The list can be endless. If you feel that something is wrong check it out, it may be nothing.
Point 5. Be kind to your self The message here is that you will not be able to take care of your child if you are not operating to your full capacity. Take time to do what make you happy at least once a week, or even a date with your mate will make a world of differences.
Point 6. Your older child is not your in house sitter Whether or not you have older kids that could help you with new baby it is not their responsibility to take care of the new bundle so be kind they have a life to.

ON FILMS If you’re a movie lover, like myself, then you probably stay current on the movies being featured each month at the box office. You know, just in case you have a couple $100 dollar bills to spare so that you can have all the amenities your heart desires without looking stingy. I mean, let’s talk about the cost of getting some popcorn and a drink alone! Those prices are ridiculous aren’t they? Anyway, back to the subject at hand. After reviewing some of the movies that are out this month, I picked these five films because they fall under my favorite movie categories: action, horror, and comedy. So sorry if I did not include drama movies, it’s just that sappy love stories drenched with drama is not my cup of tea. I either want to laugh out loud, literally, or get spooked by something I hope isn’t truly based on a true story. Now keep in mind I’m no movie critic but these are the top four movies that I feel will do well in the box office this month. “The Expendables” August 13th 2010 – Synopsis: “The Expendables” follows a group of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things aren’t quite as they appear, finding themselves caught in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. “Piranha 3D”August 20th 2010 - Synopsis: From acclaimed director Alexandre Aja (“The Hills Have Eyes”) comes the new action thriller “Piranha 3D”, in the latest eye-popping 3D technology. A new type of terror is about to be cut loose on beautiful Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together
to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor-toothed residents. But our heroine (Elisabeth Shue) is seriously outnumbered, and with only one chance to save the lake and her family from totally being devoured, she must risk everything to destroy the aquatic carnivores herself. “The Lottery Ticket” August 20th – Synopsis: Synopsis: Kevin Carson (Bow Wow), a young man living in the projects, wins $370 million in a nationwide lottery. When his opportunistic neighbors discover he has the winning ticket in his possession, Kevin must survive their greedy and sometimes even threatening actions over a three-day holiday weekend before he can claim his prize. “The Last Exorcism” August 27th 2010 Synopsis: After a career spent helping the devout through prayer and trickery, Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) invites a film crew to document his final fraudulent days as an exorcist. Soon his faith is truly tested when a desperate plea from the father of a possessed girl (Ashley Bell) brings him face to face with the devil himself. “Takers” August 27th 2010 – Synopsis: Takes you into the world of a notorious group of criminals (Idris Elba, Paul Walker, T.I., Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen, and Michael Ealy) who continue to baffle police by pulling off perfectly executed bank robberies. They are in and out like clockwork, leaving no evidence behind and laying low between heists. But when they attempt to pull off one last job with more money at stake than ever before, the crew may find their plans interrupted by a hardened detective (Matt Dillon) who is hell-bent on solving the case.

HOROSCOPESNOW Aries This month you may be forced into decisions you’d rather not face. Things start off with high levels of motivation and confidence, but begin to wane quickly. There’s hope in the realms of love, yet tough relationship issues surface when authority enters the picture.
Taurus This August, it’s about reexamining your long-term goals and taking bigger risks in pursuit of greater rewards. Take a step back now is a plus as you seek to find balance between taking care of others and attending to your own needs.
Gemini It’s necessary to keep your peers in mind this month – tension that comes later from ignoring them now isn’t worth any success you might achieve. Your current task is to seek a level of personal creativity that doesn’t upset the stability of your local community of friends and associates, but, rather contributes to it.
Libra This month is a study in contrasts. You’re motivated and ready to fly, yet you continuously feel that your wings have been clipped and you’re grounded. August is the ballroom where this dance of expansion and contradiction can impact your life in many different areas, but especially in relationships.
Scorpio This is a month for making major decisions, as your inner word is shifting in ways that will affect long-term events. It’s time to decide if you’re in the right place, yet while you may feel pushed to your limits now, complete transformation takes time.
Sagittarius This dramatic month tests your perseverance. It’s not easy to manage the pressure of unrelenting responsibilities, especially as you feel forced to prove yourself. Success takes time, and you must be willing to do the work before harvesting the fruits of your labor.
Cancer You can spice up your life this month with creative expression and bold action. Extra care must be taken now to avoid mistakes and miscommunication. Your mind is on spirituality now, which could make your daily life seem inconsequential – August is about finding balance between these two realms of life.
Capricorn Relationships are your primary source of opportunity as well as struggle this month. Sharing power isn’t easy, so it’s important to weigh what an alliance could achieve against what you’d have to sacrifice in return. Yet harmonious teamwork is possible, and may be rewarding enough to merit serious consideration.
Leo Your daily routines undergo significant stress this month, and old habits must die before new ones are born. Yet you may need to restrain your ambitions now, especially if you’ve recently taken on too much work. This is a month to decide what you can eliminate now to assure overall success later.
Virgo This transitional month finds you looking over the past to decide where to reinvest your energy, and where you must move on. It’s a great time to clean out your emotional closet and reaffirm your connection with faith, nature, and the divine. This, plus a little added creativity, will go a long way toward turning your dreams into realities.

Aquarius While you may have an obsessive drive to accomplish your goals this month, things must be taken in stride – there is no way to outsmart your own destiny. You’ll have to remain flexible and take others seriously now to successfully attend to pressing matters.
Pisces You’ve got more than your share of unfinished business this month, and it’s time to revise both relationships and long-range plans. This August is about deciding what to let go of and commit to pursuing what you truly cannot live without. Tarot.com
