New School Promoter Dell Coates aka Tha Cocky Kind

TAKING OVER ORLANDO’S NITE LIFE FPN: What made you get into promoting? Honestly I didn’t choose to get into the promo biz, it all started when I threw a party for my cousin after he passed back in 2011. Not knowing anything about what came along with parties or promoting, it was just something that God favored me with. So you can say the promo game chose me! FPN: What was your biggest event that showed you this is what you wanted to do? March 4th, 2011 at Firestone! That was my first joint & the craziest party i’ve ever done... It was in memory of my cousin Connie “C. Walk” Walker, I remember it like it was yesterday. After the party, my homie Disco Jr told me that I had what it took to take over the promo game and we been rocking & rolling ever since! FPN: How do you go about planning your parties? There’s no specific way with me, i’ll sit & plot on different ideas and if it gels together i’ll run it! I try to come up with something fresh each & every time. FPN: What are the ups and downs in promoting? The ups are the benefits that you can see from the hard work you put in, I don’t waste time thinking about what the downs are. If you win or lose really depends on you! FPN: What are your other passions? Basketball, that’s all i’ve ever known. I had dreams of going to the league or overseas but responsibilities started kicking in so I couldn’t rely on a dream! FPN: Who do you look up to in the promo game? Me, i’m my own role model... Everything i’ve accomplished was from the dirt, no handouts or favors! I have much respect from every OG promoter in the game though, I talk to a few of them frequently and they give me a few pointers on the do’s & don’ts... They know who they are! FPN: What do you do with your spare time? Answer: I have no spare time, i’m always in the mix of things trying to make a play. I’ll relax when I reach where i’m trying to make it to! FPN: Any shout outs? Shoutout to GOD!! Much love to Mert (Flyer Promo Now), No Mercy Ent., Empire Media, Troy, my Umbrella family, my sons: Keymari & Aamir, my GFM family, Dj D. Strong, Disco Jr, & everybody supporting ThaCockyKind Promotions... Luv!! www .flyerpromonow. com

HIP-HOP TURNS by B.J. Steiner

40

1973: Cindy Campbell, an entrepreneurial young girl living in the South Bronx, was looking to scrape together some extra cash to go shopping for a new wardrobe for the upcoming school year. Cindy had used her modest paycheck from a summer job to put a deposit down on a nondescript recreation room in the basement of the nondescript apartment building she lived in, in order, to throw a party to raise the requisite funds for new school clothes. She bought beer, malt liquor and soda and passed out hand-scrawled flyers to promote the party to local residents. Cindy’s hopes were to make just enough money to support her shopping spree down on Delancey Street in the Lower East Side.It was supposed to be a quick way to make a buck.

10

www .flyerpromonow. com

Cindy had a brother named Clive who was an aspiring house party DJ and was recruited by his sister to spin records at the event hoping to bring in teenagers looking to party and meet members of the opposite sex at the party. Clive had an impressive set of stereo equipment, a couple of turntables and speakers loud enough for his name to echo through the halls of time. He had played a couple of parties at friend’s house and started to make a name but there was no reason to assume that anything would come out of that party that night. Nobody expected the party to be remembered two days later. 40 years later, that party changed everything.

Clive Campbell, better known to the world as DJ Kool Herc, created something special in that recreation room at 1520 Sedgwick Ave. By extending the danceable, percussion heavy sections of dancehall, soul and disco records, Kool Herc could keep the party going on theoretically forever. The kids found Herc’s playing of “the breaks” to be hypnotically infectious and the party was a roaring success. Cindy got the money for her school clothes and Herc’s name rang out across the city that day. A creation myth flowed out of that basement’s din into the night. Hip-hop was born that evening and nothing has been the same since. For Kool Herc, the popularity of his parties became legendary. Urban kids from all over the five boroughs flocked to hear him spin the breaks and he became a massively popular figure to young

kids in New York. Soon after, aspiring young DJs captivated by the presence of Herc would start to create hip-hop of their own. Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, DJ Hollywood, Grand Wizzard Theodore, the Cold Crush Brothers, the Furious Five and the Treacherous Three would follow and become popular acts of their own spawning generations of artists to follow. First, it took New York and then it took the world. 40 years later, hip-hop is a global, multi-billion dollar industry and the most influential American culture of its time. Record labels, fashion lines, magazines, radio stations and advertising firms were built out of what Kool Herc sparked that night. Things have evolved quite a lot over the last 40 years but something never changed. Kids are always aspiring to have fun and they will always need something to dance, too.

“...DJ Kool Herc, created something special in that recreation room at 1520 Sedgwick Ave.”

O

What made you start rapping? I was producing tracks for my homie nem when we were young. I jumped on one of the songs with him and everyone that heard it said that I need to get serious about rapping also. Omeez was born. How long have you been rapping? I got serious about it 2005. I’m 8 years in. What current projects are you working on? Right now our team circulating my 1st real deal project “MAYDAY”. I have a few videos in the works. I’m getting calls about features weekly. I’m working on producing a few tracks for other artists. Also possible placement on a movie sound track. We got a lot going on. What artist, if any, would you compare yourself to? I really feel I’m in my own lane. But the people and fans have compared me to Outkast, Field Mobb, Luda. All of them are great artist and original. I take it all as compliments. Give me one word that describes you. Talented

What are the three most important things in your life? My relationship with God, taking care of family, and getting to the paper.

12 6

What singles are you pushing right now? Well my intention was to run with “Do It Wit The Lights On”. Though it’s getting play in a lot of areas, the people’s choice is “Change Up”. Everyone that listens to that song says it’s an undeniable hit. I also recently dropped a strip club anthem “TDS”. I need my supporters to request those songs in the club and at your local radio stations. “Bangers” www .flyerpromonow. com

OMEEZ Tell me about your single, “TDS” aka “Tip Da Stripper.” What made you decide to feature Chrissy Splash in your song? I have been performing in a lot of strip clubs but I didn’t have a song catered to that environment. So I felt the need to make an anthem for them. To get the strip clubs really involved in the Mayday Campaign. And Chrissy, I heard her rip on a few occasions and I knew her voice would complete the song and make it a hit. Get at her for that artwork also.

Tell me something that most people wouldn’t know about you. How to pronounce my name. It’s O-Mee-Z. Most people mess it up due to the way it’s spelled. You got to use that southern slang though. Also I produced all the tracks on “Mayday” except two.

Are you planning to shoot a video for your single “TDS” aka “Tip Da Stripper”? Oh Yeah. That is a must!!!!!!

Any last words for our readers and your fans? I appreciate all the support that I have been getting. Pursuing a career in music is a real grind and support plays a major part with motivation. As fans, you all need to make sure you request songs when you’re in clubs or whenever you’re in an establishment with Djs. You have to let them know it is a demand to hear indie music. If you playing it at home and in your cars, why not hear it while you partying? It’s all support and love. Make sure you download that “Mayday” on datpiff.

Any future plans for your music career? Keep pushing. That sums it all up. No matter how major my situation gets, I will not be content.

How can your fans reach you? Twitter: @omeez407, YouTube: Mromeez, IG: omeez4400 For Bookings, Features, Beats, Etc. Hit my management. Will C @ 321-662-9039 or Big Len @ 407-715-5641 Any shout outs? God for blessing me to be extremely talented. My parents for raising me to be a successful man. All of my supporters. My Home Team. My management. The Djs & promoters that are sincerely backing the campaign.

KENDRICK LAMAR MEANS BUSINESS By Rob Markman MTV.com

K

endrick Lamar’s “Control” verse forced a number of rappers into the studio after hearing it, but not Big Sean. The G.O.O.D. Music MC laid his vocals onto the fiery track first, and while many fans speculated that Sean switched his bars to match Kendrick’s fire, he says he did no such thing.

“I started the song, I laid my verse first. I sent it to Kendrick and Jay Elec too. And then Kendrick sent that verse back... So when I heard it I was kind of like cracking up,” Sean told Vibe.com on Tuesday night. “When I heard that verse I was like, ‘Man I’m not about to go back and change my verse — that’s cheating.” K-Dot stole the show on the track, which also features Jay Electronica. On his verse, Lamar sent a warning shot to Big Sean, Drake, J. Cole, Pusha T, A$AP Rocky and a number of other notable rappers whom he says he considers friends. “I got love for you all but I’m tryna murder you n----s/ Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you n----s,” he raps figuratively on the track. Seeing as how “Control” is technically Sean’s song, he could’ve altered the verse or decided not to include Kendrick altogether. In 1997, LL Cool J invited Canibus on his “4,3,2,1” track and after Uncle L heard what he believed to be a subliminal diss, he requested that ‘Bis change his verse. The two went on to release a number of diss tracks aimed at each other after the song’s release. For Sean, changing his rhymes, or altering Kendrick’s was never an option. “That ain’t the way of an O.G. That ain’t how G’s move. I wanted to that for the culture of hip-hop as www.flyerpromonow. .flyerpromonow.com com 22 www

opposed to myself,” he said. “This is the most exciting rap song to drop this year, period.” The track didn’t just cause a stir among fans, but other rappers as well. Some felt disrespected because Kendrick didn’t name drop them in his verse, and others took exception to another line where the Compton native appeared to call himself the “king of New York,” a title that was bestowed upon the Notorious B.I.G. before his death. So far Joell Ortiz, Lupe Fiasco, B.o.B, Fred the Godson, Los and Mickey Factz have all responded to Kendrick lyrically. “I haven’t seen this much people so excited over a hip-hop song,” Sean said. “It’s hip-hop, it’s a sport. It should get back to being competitive, if that’s what people want.”

“Kendrick aint diss nobody he was basically saying Everything is a competition ain’t no friends when you tryna get to the top.”

“Kendrick Lamar ended so many careers today. Shall we have a moment of silence though @kendricklamar”

“The people who Kendrick Lamar mentioned shouldn’t feel threatened. The ones he didn’t mention should. Cuz to him the rest are none factors.”

“The rap game is finna be real interesting over the next few months all thanks to Kendrick Lamar.”

FPN: How did the name Lil’ One come about? It was a name given to me by the street o.g.’s in the game. I was the youngest on the block making big plays.

FPN: How did Trayon Martin affect the community and the music culture in Sanford? I actually lived two doors from his family and had the privilege to speak with him 2 days prior. It hurt badly, but we’re coming through with strength to make a positive situation, which was intended to be bad. FPN: Often in rap we hear about the glam and fame. Shed some light on the struggles and obstacles you had to overcome on this journey to success. I first had to find myself, similar to that Michael Jackson song, “Man in The Mirror”. It was until my time in federal prison that I was able to truly sit down and observe the talents and gifts

NE inside of me. I learned that I was more than a street nigga. So mine and a lot of other people’s biggest obstacle was self-identity, which I no longer struggle with.

FPN: Are there any artists in the game that you would like to work with? I would like to do a project with T.I.

FPN: Any current Projects you’re working on? Yeah my new mix tape: “Introduction of a Real Nigga” expected to drop early 2014.

FPN: What advice do you have for any aspiring artists trying to get in the game? Stay consistent and never give up. When I was behind the wall, Bigg Gates was my mentor he would always tell me never give up, that the struggle builds character. FPN: Anything readers would be shocked to know about Lil’ One? Any hidden talents? I speak fluent Spanish FPN: How do you feel about your music making an impact in Central Florida? Because I’m giving real life experiences and reality of what I been thru. It’s music for anyone that has been in the struggle in an improvised community can relate too.

FPN: Any shout outs? To the whole Bokey (Sanford, FL), Rich Boy, Youngn, Lil Perk, Made Mell, I4 mix tapes, Stick407.
