ARE YOU THE
by Kris Kinville of Talkoforlando.com
O
rlando Fall is here! And for those of us that love fashion, it’s our favorite time of year. This is when the breezy, bright colored sundress and sandals are replaced by bold patterns, layers and warmer fabrics like wool & fur. It’s a time, in my opinion, where true fashion sense and style is displayed. For central Florida, it is also a time when we are blessed to have “fashion sense” collaborate to present one of Florida’s biggest fashion events ~ The Park Avenue Fashion Week in Winter Park, FL October 9th - 15th. Harriett’s Park Avenue Fashion week celebrates the local fashion and retail design community of Winter Park. It’s a full week of events, from trunk shows to designer meet-and-greets, with the grand finale fashion show on Saturday evening in Central Park’s West Meadow. I had the great pleasure to talk with some of the “insider’s” to this incredible event… The PAFW (Park Avenue Fashion Week) concept was born from the creativity of Melixa Carbonell and Willow Shambeck, co-owners of the former Shou’Ture shoe store on Park Avenue in 2007. PAFW was established by the Park Avenue Area Association and the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce who came together with one goal in mind, to promote the local Winter Park retailers along with other “fashionable” businesses in the Winter Park area. This is a community wide event and “it takes a village” to pull it off! There are many people who get involved. Every year PAFW arranges a team of local retailers, photographers, models, promoters, and production experts, along with representatives from the Park Avenue Area Association and the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce. “The team that hosts the annual PAFW can reach up to 2025 people who contribute their time on an annual basis.” states Anna Nash PAFW Creative Director. One of the premier opportunities created by PAFW is the “Emerging Designer’s” contest where local designers have a chance to submit their unique creations to compete for the recognition, exposure & acknowledgment that a popular fashion show can bring. Contestants submitted three to five finished looks plus photos or sketches of additional designs to form a 10-look collection by August 2011. At least five semi-finalists were
chosen by the panel, which includes local fashion legacy and title sponsor, Harriett Lake and 2010 HPAFW Emerging Designer winner, Maria Roman, plus fashion stylists, fashion editors and high-end fashion retailers. Once notified, semi-finalists will have two weeks complete an additional look for a charity-related “Project Runway” type challenge. Only 3 finalists will be selected. Finalists’ final collections will be reviewed in an individual editorial photo shoot provided by HPAFW. Then only one winner will be chosen from the finalists. On the night of the PAFW fashion show, (10/15/11) finalists will appear in a video featuring personal interviews & behind-the-scenes footage from the photo shoots. The previously determined winner will be revealed at HPAFW 2011 with his or her own personal runway show. Prizes also include their photo shoot being published in an Orlando publication, two VIP tickets, professional photographs of their runway show & the opportunity to carry their line in a boutique participating in HPAFW for one month, accompanied by a trunk show! That’s quite a “jackpot” for a local designer looking to “jump off” their own line. Anna stated, “Along with all the local retailers from Park Avenue and Hannibal Square and up and coming designers that participate in our
Emerging Designer competition, we will also be showcasing our 2010 Emerging Designer Winner, Maria Roman and her 2011 “Because of You” collection.” Erica Spence the Marketing & Communications Director for the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce added, “PAFW showcases the best of Winter Park to the broader Central Florida market. The economic benefit of a weeklong event has a tremendous impact on the boutiques and restaurants in Winter Park both during PAFW and throughout the year as guests return to their favorite shops and eateries.” Erica went on to say, “The Orlando Ballet will also open the runway show on Saturday night with a very “advent garde” performance choreographed exclusively for Park Avenue Fashion Week. The exciting Runway Show will be fast-paced and include one intermission featuring food and drink from local upscale restaurants in the VIP lounge. This year, we are adding 6 sky lounges for private groups of 10 to watch the show in the luxury of their own “room.” And we plan to end the show with an exciting and uplifting number.” Aspiring local models also get their chance to “strut their stuff” with this event. August 20th tryouts for models for PAFW were held @ The Chamber of Commerce. “Models are cast for the Runway show through a series of casting calls. Each participating store meets with the Creative Director on the overall look and feel of their show
and
discusses how the models will be styled, including hair/make up.” Erica stated. A large eclectic group of both males and female all showed in hopes of becoming “Winter Park’s Next Top Model” and to have the chance to display some of the newest fashions. When asked why she chose this event to audition for, Shelby, originally from Boston, stated “It’s an awesome opportunity for great exposure to be in this show. I always shop in Winter Park anyway, so I thought it would be perfect!” (Laughing) Patrice from Eatonville stated, “I tried out because of the excitement and energy of the crowd is what I feed off of, I tried out last year and hopefully I’ll make it this year!” Adding to the “style” & “glamour” of PAFW is the sponsorship by Mercedes Benz. When asked how businesses get involved, Erica stated, “We have a variety of sponsor levels, including the “Friends of Fashion”. Sponsorship levels are designed to provide organizations and individuals with a unique experience during Park Avenue Fashion Week and exposure to the greater community as a supporter of the event.” With a brand like Mercedes, it automatically added a “new car shine” to my growing excitement. Anna elaborated, “Sponsors bring financial support as well as credibility to the event. In return we promote their companies to the most fashionable and motivated shoppers in central Florida. It is a great opportunity for sponsors to participate and be able to work with the committee to promote their brand in a unique event such as PAFW.” www.flyerpromonow.com

My favorite and most honorable aspect of this event is; it is not just for profit. This year’s charity to gain is the “Go Red for Women” Campaign which benefits the American Heart Association. * “Cardiovascular disease claims the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year, yet women aren’t paying attention.” states the www.goredforwomen.org website, and with this event Winter Park strives to catch more of our community’s attention. Erica said, “Harriett Lake, our presenting sponsor, is a heart patient survivor, and so are many other women. We feel that women of all ages need to know about the danger of heart disease and are proud to bring awareness to the “Go Red for Women” campaign.” The “Go Red” movement, if you’re not familiar, harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. It also provides the tools for how to live a “Heart Healthy Life”. So, Orlando weather you enjoy fashion or not, I know your “heart” is in the right place. Come show your support for a superb charity organization AND a very “fashionable” community extravaganza! Always “Support Your Local Arts” For Additional Info & to purchase tickets got to www.parkavenuefashionweek.com or www.winterpark.org

ince this is the first installment I would first like to thank everyone who paid me not to put there names in this column. And for the people that didn’t pay me.... here you gooo. Did anybody go to the HIP-HOP FEST?? I can’t believe I went to that shit, the only thing worst than that event was that damn UNITY AWARDS. Seems like all the Big clubs are in a recession either they closing down or just doing bad, and all the small spots are winning this year (the Barn,Dave’s place, Teresa’s, Santa Fe) Fellas time to step your game up. Guess who I seen working @ Cleo’s?? Mz.Kitty, the imfamous Kitty who worked on 102Jamz and 95.3 and O.P.D. and so on (nuff said). Clubs beware; heard through the grapevine that the fire department are shaking down clubs for payolla, (watch ya backs) Did OUT THE GATE really give away a car @ the Halloween party at LAX. Last but not least No ALL Star Game in the O.

Cl Da You have an interesting name. Where did it come from? My homeboy Greeny Green started callin me that a long time ago. Over the years the name kinda grew on me and I just ran with it. What are some of your biggest accomplishments thus far for you in the game and what lessons have you encountered? Well I made the “Clint Dawg” brand an established name in my city. I did that through hard work, consistency, and of course, good music. I released the “Pre-Snap” early this summer and followed it up with the “Fatality” album. A lot of work went into this project. My street team is out there doin they thang too!! We done spread from here to Miami all the way to Georgia. One thing I did learn is how to keep a strong team. Without them, all this would be impossible. What was your inspiration for starting in the game and what artist(s) are you inspired by (if any)? I started back in the day just rapping in the hood with my homeboys. We started a group called “Chozen Onez”. We did our thing back then. I might have never started rapping if it wasn’t for that situation. As for inspiration, I really can’t tie that down to any particular artist. It’s just the whole movement that inspires me. Also the lack of a major artist in my city also drives me to do the things I do. I’d be happy as hell if anybody made it from round here. What is it about your music that makes you different from any other local artist here in Orlando? Dog, the Fatality album is killin shit right now. Many find it hard to believe that I’m an unsigned artist when they hear my music. The clarity, sound, energy, and flow is unlike no other. There’s

Seen It All Dear Miss Know It All, I have been in a relationship with this woman for about 6month and we have a wonderful sex life (the best I ever had) we tried every position I can think of. After hanging out with her girls, she came home wanting me too give it to her in her a$$. What should I do. -Seeking The Back Door Dear Seeking The Back Door, Personally I think its NASTY! But hey, It ain’t my a$$ and you ain’t my man so what I think don’t really count. It does make me question what she be getting into while she’s out with her “girls” that would make her come home asking for a$$ shots. The truth is dude, she ain’t wife material, so you should fuck the shit out of her asshole then dump her freaky a$$! -Miss Know It All Homeboy don’t do it!! I tried it with Mz. Knowitall once, (i was drunk) and now she walks around wearing a diaper, cause she keeps shitting on herself, oops maybe I wasn’t supposed to say that. But seriously some women believe its a treat to give there man there a$$, I believe if a bitch wants to give me treat, make me some Damn banana pudding.

do the same thing over and over, the “business” side starts to become more clear, because you start getting offered different things and being placed in certain situations. And there’s a part of you that begins to grow up and say: “Hey, this is more than art, now. You are a brand.” And when that happens, you become more of a businessperson. You become more involved in everything that you’re doing, and you’re not just jumping from a plane when it’s time to do a show or signing the dotted line just because you’re in a meeting. You finally get to a point where you actually know what’s going on around you, because this is the life that you have grown into. You need to be involved. You need to know the business. I don’t let my manager handle everything. You need to know when business is good. You need to know when it’s slow. You need to know the details of your budget. And you need to know all the things that are important about your career. I think that’s what made me put my foot down and have a say-so and feel comfortable saying: “No, I don’t like this!” or “Let’s try this!” When did this finally become clear to you? I started looking at my career as a twenty-four hour job. I call it work. I don’t really look at it as just having fun. Fun comes along with it, but there is a lot of work that has to be done, too. There are a lot of stressful long nights – and early mornings. There are times when you have a lot of fun and travelling – and there are times when you have to be away from family. So every time I do a project, I think of the business aspect. I think of how it’s going to affect me, and how it’s going to benefit me. Everything! [laughing] I think I have always been guided or taught how to be in control of what I am doing. No matter what, I can perform throughout the entire year, with or without an album. So I had to understand that this is not just doing performances. This is my business. This is a career. This is how I live. This is how I eat. This is how I provide for my family. Trina, it’s really inspiring to hear you talk. As a native of North Carolina, I remember that there used to be a day and age when Southern rap was not considered hip-hop. In your mind, when did the South become a key player in the hip-hop game? Absolutely, I totally agree. At first, people really did not take the South that seriously. It wasn’t considered real hip-hop – just fast music, a lot of up-tempo, bootyshaking dance music. Over the years, it has gotten stronger, and there are some Southern artists – Trick [Daddy], T.I., Ludacris, Lil’ Wayne, Rick Ross – that took what they believed in and turned it into a whole hip-hop genre. I’m really honored to be a part of that movement. There are so many different artists from different parts of the South that have different types of music. And now it’s taking over – and at first it wasn’t even considered! At what point did you officially realize that rapping was something you could do as a career? Oh, this is one of those moments that left me in total shock! I had just recorded “Nann,” my first record with Trick, and he invited me to his album release party. And
I was thinking: “Okay, cool. I’m going to go watch him perform, do his single, whatever.” I was just there having a nice time. He was performing and everybody was having a good time dancing and partying. And he played the record, but when it got to my part, he stopped, talked to the crowd and said: “Do you guys want to see Trina come up here and do her show?” [laughing] I literally ran out of the club! [laughing continues] I was thinking: “Oh, you’re crazy. I’m not doing it. No way. Absolutely not. I’m not getting on that stage.” It was a really funny moment, but then he was so serious. I just said: “OK.” When I got on the stage and started performing “Nann,” every girl in the club was singing the verse. I was in awe. From that moment, I really started thinking about it; and when he first started his tour, I actually was able to go on and perform. Tallahassee Homecoming – that was a huge, huge show. They went crazy, and with that performance, it literally jumped inside: “I’m never doing anything else.” And it was one of those things I took seriously. It became really serious, and I put out my first album within the next year. A large number of women look to you for inspiration. As the founder of the Diamond Doll Foundation, what is a crucial message that you want to leave with the young women of this current generation? No matter what happens in life, you have to believe in yourself. Sometimes I find myself thinking that the people I thought believed in me the most believed in me the least. One of the hardest things you have to do is feel like you are walking alone. I just became a very strong person, because I just knew that there was nothing I could not do. So you have to be very focused and fight for whatever it is that you want to do. And give it all your all, 150 percent. The world isn’t perfect: everybody has a past and everybody has a story. But I think that if you are 100 percent genuine with yourself and just do whatever it is that you love, then it’s so easy to make everybody else believe in it, because you believe in it. What makes you gravitate towards “diamonds,” and how do they relate to your persona? I just think a diamond is like a really priceless thing. They’re rare and beautiful. And they’re very sexy and alluring. They also make you fabulous! [laughing] But I just think a diamond is a really priceless thing. And diamonds are a girl’s best friend! Trina As a female rapper in a male-dominated genre, what do you think has been the biggest obstacle in your pursuit of success? Sometimes, it’s pretty overwhelming, when you think about being on a show and the line-up has five or six guys and one girl. But with me being the only girl, it made me stronger and kept me focused. So the only obstacle was myself, because I realize that I could do whatever I wanted to do as long as I stayed determined. I just try to maintain and stay in my lane, so that I can continue to put out albums and just continue to be me. Having spent well over a decade in the music game, what old obstacles do you think female rappers have overcome, and what new obstacles have emerged in the contemporary music landscape? When I first started out, every woman had to be a sex symbol kind of thing, and every woman had to be sensual and provocative. I guess it was just a part of the era of music at that time. Now, women are still sexy, but they are more flirty and fun. And I see more women talking about getting girls to be on a whole other level and to be independent and just be a “boss chick.” I think that’s the difference now: you see more women stepping out on their own and making their own money. It’s way different, just a decade later. There’s always going to be obstacles, no matter what happens. I just think every artist, especially females, have to understand what works best for them.

You really have to understand what it is that you can bring out of yourself to constantly recreate and revamp every time the music changes or every time you come out with something different. Because when you evolve, you grow; and because you’ve seen and done so much, you have to put all that into action and show it. Although several accolades have been attached to your name, with the release of your forthcoming project, you will join a rare club of hip-hop emcees to record six studio albums. Even so, on a more personal level, what professional accomplishment do you consider to be your great contribution to hip-hop? I really adore my fans and how much effort they have put in supporting me for so long. From the very beginning, everybody that loved me back then has grown up with me as I grew up. I think that is really important. Because of them, I have been able to stay relevant and stay consistent. I have been able to do this for a decade because people want me to continue doing what I have been doing for this long. Over the years, you have built a brand and empire that extends beyond the music business. As a businesswoman, what professional lessons played a role in your success? Well, coming into the business – as a young artist – it was all about having fun: music, touring, partying, collaborating with other artists, and just having a great time meeting a lot of different people. But as you continue to

Instead of talking about when you started rapping, why don’t you tell us why you started? I started entertaining because I had a gift for it,win, lose or draw. Carpe Diem.
The game is so saturated with the same themes— cars, clubs, women and money. What do you bring to the mic that is different and original? I bring originality to the game due to the fact that im not telling a bunch of frivolous lies in my music. You can check the streets and verify what I say,I rap about yacht’s cuz i’ve chartered them at times,I rap about da streetz cuz I was heavy in da game, I rap about the struggle bcuz I came from that growin up. The button up shirts are to blend in wit the economy,I got a real history to discuss thru my muzik
Besides rap, what other genres of music are you into? Any particular artists? Aww thats vast,im into jazz, classical, artists like Chris Botti,Beethoven 7th symphony....etc Fly Boy
When you’re ready to lay down a track, do you prefer freestyling your rhymes or actually writing them down? When im preparing a track it just depends on the frequency that im on as to weather i’ll write it or freestyle it.Im pretty universal digg
What lessons have you encountered on your journey in this industry so far, any advice to give upcoming artists? I’ve have encountered alot of so called boss’s jus gettin into the game and personifyin someone life.N think thats what the game is.It aint. Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced.-James Baldwin.
