Ashley: When did you first realize you wanted to be a DJ? DJ Snap: Around 2005. How did you get started in the industry? I got started through a friend who had been DJing before me, DJ Chris. I used to be his hype man. But I eventually moved on to the music... How long have you been at Foxy Lady? For five years. Do you play local artists’ music? Yes, I play a lot of local music. Who’s in rotation at your club right now? JR, DK, Playa Hershey...those are the three artists that stand out. How can artists get put on? The way to get put on is to expose yourself and get in the streets and network. Alot of the time an artist will drop off a cd and it will end up in the junk pile cause nobody knows you. You have to come promote yourself and be a presence in the streets. Basically, bring the person with the music. Are you getting your hands in anything other than music right now? I’m trying to get my hands in promotion, so I can promote some concerts. When are you planning on starting your promotion campaigne?

I like a lot of street artists like Gucci, Flaka, Rick Ross, Outkast, UGK,8 Ball & MJG. All of them are real street artists. I’m really loving Gucci Mane though... So what is it that you like about Gucci? I think he takes a lot of things in the game as a whole and flips it into his own style. For example, Tity Boi can come up with 2 Chains. Gucci comes out with Gucci 2 Times. He just got his own style period. He’s very versatile. What do you see yourself doing in a year? I am going to expand my DJing and try to get on a bigger platto in the game. I am trying to get my mix cds poppin. Do you want to host mix tapes? Yeah. I’m working on a couple projects right now. I just finished one with one of my artists, which is a female. I ain’t gone say no names... In your own words what’s the most important thing about being a DJ? It is to be able to connect with the people that you’re entertaining. Another thing about being a DJ is to know your music, and not just on a national level, but on a local level also. You also must be a people person and be able to network with other DJs and Artists. Any shot outs?

Shot out to my personal friend, that really inspired me to being a DJ, 00Kee. Shot out This month...June. to DJ Big Boy, DJ Swift, DJ Goody. Those Who are some of your favorite artists? are the DJs I network with... COLUMBUS, GA - www.flyerpromonow.com | 5

Ashley: So Contanek, tell me, how does it feel, as a woman, to have your song “Tootsie Pop” on the Billboard Charts? Contanek: First and foremost I feel blessed! I feel very powerful right now, as a woman. And I feel independent…When I think of a powerful independent black woman I think of Oprah Winfrey…a pioneer…a trendsetter. Basically I have done something that no other female has done, especially from Columbus, GA.So that’s just a wonderful feeling.. OK, so tell me about some of your past accomplishments along the way. Songs? Mixtapes? And what were some of their concepts? Well in 2007 I dropped an album that was titled “Dope Girl Fresh” and the concept of that? Well I was just starting, and I kinda wanted my fans to feel what kind of level that I was on. I’m not what you call your “commercial” rapper. I speak from real life situations…. What is your follow up song after your “Tootsie Pop” debut? My follow up song is “Stay Off My Shoes” and it is a very crunk, energetic song for the women. And it’s just something that I feel females go through in the club but they don’t speak about it. Once again I like to speak on certain experiences and I don’t know about most females but I love shoes, I have a fetish for shoes and when I buy brand new shoes, you better stay off them!! Just stay off my shoes…. Ok. Who are some of your favorite influential female rappers and why? I’m a lover of the old school rapper so Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and Yo Yo are my influences. I feel like these ladies are real genuine, naturally beautiful, and they are not out there trying to sell sex, even

though both they and the industry know sex sales. If they do rap, that subject is not their main focus. When I listen to their lyrics I understand their lyrics, I know what they are talking about and I can relate! Versus now, the stuff I hear today doesn’t appear to have the depth in lyrics as predecessors have once done. I understand that you can also hold a note…that is sing. Now what is the title of the song where you show the listeners your vocal skills? “All I Want Is You,” and that song is simply about a guy that I want, and I don’t care about the circumstances of getting involved with him. I’m willing to do whatever it takes. I don’t care about who he has at home either. I’m a boss!!! So why would I be worried about her. My only concern is about him. So I’m basically trying to get him to join me in my Kingdom. And I say, “It is what it is.” I mean I hate to be a homewreaker, but in most circumstances relationships are like that. Like I said, I rap and I speak on real life experiences. Every woman has lusted for a man that is not theirs and is already taken. Ok let’s talk about your record label DGF Records. Are you currently the only artist on the label and are you searching for more talent? Yes I am looking for more artist, but right now I have to concentrate on myself because I don’t want to over crowed things. I really don’t have any extra time to be working with another artist right now. Now, the DGF stands for Dope Girl Fresh and people hear that word dope and they automatically think of drugs but back in the day dope meant hot!! It’s a hip hop term. I’m dope, I’m fresh, and I’m a female. What qualities do you hold that have

COLUMBUS, GA - www.flyerpromonow.com | 11

made you so successful thus far? First and foremost I must say that I am truly blessed. I have the talent, I have an excellent manager and a great marketing team. My manager is Mr. Johnny Wesley AKA Pinhead. Most of my team are men. And I let them do what is necessary for me and my business. I want to be surrounded by powerful people and I do feel powerful when I’m with my team. Like I mentioned before, I’m the Queen. And my team pumps me up like worker bee’s. LOL! I feel like I got the power of the city. Now I understand that you are studying business at Columbus Tech. Tell me more about your reason for going back to school. I’m trying to get my associates degree in business management. It will help me by knowing what I am signing unlike other artist who sign their life away without knowing it. I’m trying to run a record label and I can’t run a record label and not know the business side. It teaches you how to be a leader versus a follower and how to empower people and have those people be loyal to you because they can trust your decisions when it comes down to business. Do you feel that there might be another female era such as the one in the 90s and if so how would you feel if you became one of the pioneers or “God Mother” of this needful market. I don’t know about the female era right now. Every female that comes out is hating on the next female but if I came out, I’m not gonna dis people that came out 10-15 years ago because they have paved the way for females like me. Now I can’t help that some have fallen off because that has nothing to do with me but I would never disrespect someone that I used to listen to when I was younger. And I’m not going to say I’m the hottest thing smoking with only one album out because there’s always someone better than you. You seem to be a family person and, as a mother, how important is family to you and how important is it to be able to provide for your children? I’m the last child of nine siblings so I grew up very poor. I had a great mom, she was a single parent who raised nine kids by herself. She has raised me to be a very strong person. I too at one point was a single parent but that was before I found my significant other. You have to want something, you have to have a vision, a strategic plan in your life. It is similar to running a business. When you have kids you should have a whole different outlook on life. I just want my kids to have a lot and grow up better than I did. Who do you pay your respects to for getting you where you are today? I pay my respects to Jesus Christ, to KES Music and Video Distribution, to NMAP (National Marketing & Promotions), and to all the female artists that have paved the way so that I am where I am now. 12

Keep Grindin Kickboard King

Ok

now this topic may be a lil touchy but who cares here we go. For those that may not be up on current underground artists about to blow and such but there are two specific ones that i would like to address that are sticking out like a sore thumb in the game right now. 50 Tyson 18-year-old rapper from Minneapolis whose claim to fame is a youtube video that went stupid viral had had people across the nation saying “I aint gonna lie man Im 50 Tyson” As I begin watching his video I initially laughed at the horrible rhyme scheme bad lyrics and limited vocab, not to mention its all shot in his bathroom while he’s holding his camera phone. My thoughts were “This Kid can’t be for real” but I couldn’t stop watching and from the 12 million views he had I knew I couldn’t be the only one. After clicking on another one of his videos and taking a closer look I realized something is definitely wrong with this boy and all of a sudden felt kinda bad for laughing. But little did I know 50 suffers from autism. On April 15th, he released his debut album, “50 Tyson Presents the Rhythm of Autism, Volume 1.” Every year he plans to release an album during autism month and I hope to inspire people living with Autism and their families to pursue their goals because having Autism should not stop them from becoming who

14

they want to be. Now the question is will 50 Tyson ever be accepted into the rap fraternity? Now on the other hand we have Lil B a.k.a. “The BasedGod” rapper out of Cali has been raising eyebrows in the hip hop community. Lil B gained massive popularity through the use of social media Web sites. He created over 155 MySpace pages in order to promote his music and spread his brand of being “The BasedGod” (taking the Soulja Boy route I guess). He recorded over 1,500 tracks as of July 2010, including hits “Wonton Soup,” and “I’m God.” But his proclaimed love for the gay community is what really makes this young fella stick out. Titles such as “Pretty Bitch” and “Im Gay” have brought the rapper danger to his life by receiving death threats about his movement. Although he is “heterosexual”, he says the title is a message of support to the LGBT community. Referring to the alternative definition of gay, he says he is gay because he is happy. Well Lil B that’s all well and good but Ive listened to a couple of mixtapes and just like the 50Tyson situation I was like this dude has to be playing with me. I have yet to listen to a Lil B song that made sense but this guy has soo many diehard fans its crazy. So I guess I say to all of this if Lil B and 50Tyson were the last ones to be picked on your Hip Hop all-star team and you had to pick one, which one would you pick The autistic rapper with a cause or the “Pretty Bitch”?

BET has Beef with Rihanna by Knickie Duchatellier

S

o it seems our friend Rihanna has gotten herself in trouble with BET as of late. Apparently the folks over at BET have been outraged, or at least they say they are, and this is due to numerous viewer complaints over her recent video for “Man Down”. Evidently the gruesome nature of the video is considered deplorable to the delicate viewing taste of those who watch BET. Yes, the people who vote for Wacka Flacka to be on the top 10 count down on 106 and Park have taken umbrage to the idea that Rihanna shoots a man in her video. Not just any man mind you, a man who is implied to have sexually assaulted her, but they weren’t mad at the rapist action. No, they’re pissed that she would condone the murder of a man during peek viewing hours. Seriously BET viewers, of all the content aired this is what has your panties in a bunch. You have got to be kidding. Less you recall the most family friendly videos of “Tip Drill” and other such brands of misogyny, but those are ok. Fact is, there is far more worse content and images portrayed on the Viacom owned network than that of Rihanna half-naked gunning a man down in broad day light. Truth be told, most of the imagery on BET has left much to be desired. Women are often reduced to sex things; and just because you bleep the word, doesn’t mean that folks aren’t aware that the girls are being referred to as a canine or lady of the night. BET, if you’re going to start calling out Rihanna for gun violence, I say you stop airing “Baby Boy” every day; a movie that obviously shows murder, rape, drug dealing, infidelity, prostitution and horrid acting. They say pick your battles for a reason Robert L. Johnson; that could be because your ill equipped for a debate of what is supposedly acceptable behavior, especially to the so-called impressionable minds of teenagers.

Ashley: How long have you been with Davis Broadcasting and what is your position? Nicole Bufong: This October will be 5 years. I started as the sales assistant, handling national sales under Angela Verdejo, our General Sales Manager,in the sales department. I helped put together sales packages but did not directly go out and sale. So you worked your way up? 2 years later in 2008 I was promoted to Promotions Director. Mr. Davis believed that I could do the job and the position was available so I clinched that position. Its been 3 years now and I still feel like a Junior in college. By the time you’re a Junior, you know what to expect in college and so it’s like I know the events coming each year and I know what to expect so it’s easier to plan ahead for them. What does your average day consist of? Well I am the only person at this company in the promotion department. There’s nobody else to help me do all the things the job consists of so.... So YOU need an assistant?!

What about after parties? If its an after party on the bill then same thing as before. I have to be their with street team on –site ready to take email addresses, bannering of the venue as well, so yea that not a typical day but that’s Family Da in the Park. Now usually my work consists of being in charge of all the vans. Will helps out but I have to prepare vans for remotes. I’m in charge of the prize closet, on air give aways because that’s what promotions does. Tickets, schedules, winner sheets for prizes. Coming up with ideeas to execute is all a part of promotions. What are the valuable tools you believe to being successful at this station in promotions? Contacts and building those relationships, making phone calls is a big part of promotions. Emails, responding to people and making sure that people know about the stations. That’s the job of promotions to promote the radio stations, 6 different stations with different formats can be challenging at times especially if you are by yourself. But the help of the personalities and other staff at the station make it easier. Well whats one valuable tool to promotions?

Yes I do! We have 6 stations here in Columbus, and I am in charge of all the things that need to be done with them. What are the stations? K92.7 WKZJ, Foxie 105 WFXE, 1340 AM WOKS (Blues/Gospel), 100.7 WEAM (Gospel), 1580 AM & 95.7 FM (ESPN Sports Talk Radio) So again, tell me what you do during the day and also your day focusing on Family Day in the Park 2011? Well speaking of Family Day in the Park, I will begin my day by going to the park at 6 AM to post up banners and the street team will help with that. Between 8am - 9am we must make sure the stage is set up and add finishing touches. And showtime starts at 11:30AM. Once the artists start coming in I am in charge of checking them in at the stage, making sure they go do interviews, and then make sure they get back to their cars after.

Calling people back and keeping in contact with people. Its not always easy to get people to do things. But if you have a good repour and relationship with them then that helps. Any advice promotiions?

Your going to have to put in work. All the stuff I ask street team to do I have done it’s a part of learning what to do. You have to be willing to talk to people. Keep a smile on your face even if your not happy. People notice, and follow up with contacts. Any shot outs? Friends, family? The Davis’, senior colleuges, Carl Conner, Michael Soul, 00Kee. They all advised me on my position here at the station. Mr. Davis gave me a chance. I didn’t have the degree but he saw something in me. Thank you Mom and Dad and Sisters. I lost my dad and sister the year I started at the station. Loosing them drives me tp be harder and to be better.

Hattie’s

Helping Hands Non-Profit organization Proudly presents

Hits by Any Means

The Ice Academy 1st annual Tour 2011

“Where pressure creates Diamonds”

Hattie’s Helping Hands is an organization created in Loving Memory of my extraordinarily determined Grandparents Rev. Eugene Mitchell and Hattie Mae Mitchell. Born in California, but grew up in Georgia, my family called me Mandy. When I started working in the real world, my associates called me Rose’ Mitchell. But you can just call me Motif. In 2000, I graduated from Kendrick High School. Currently I am pursuing a Masters in Business Administration from Columbus State University with a concentration in Accounting and Marketing. WNBA Super Star Candice Wiggins of the Minnesota Lynx (#11) is the Spokeswoman of my Hattie’s Helping Hands organization. She was once told that, “If you take normal coal and condense it with a tremendous amount of pressure you can create a diamond.” Hence, Hattie’s Helping Hands wants to be the one to help you, help others, help themselves! By offering her mentor capabilities, this has allowed Candice Wiggins (#11) to see that challenges and new experiences can only make you a leader. Hence, Ice Academy is a ten city, five state tour in association with Hits By Any Means Entertainment. Local artists will record radio commercials and television

commercials and there will also be national coverage with WNBA Star Candice Wiggins (#11). Hattie’s Helping Hands Ice Academy is all about giving back to young girls and boys. As someone who has overcome so many obstacles we would like to use her platform as WNBA player to give back. Ice academy strives to provide children and young adults with lifetime basketball and volleyball skills, advice, and great coaching instruction and live entertainment. This camp will be personalized for each Childs skill level and tailored to each of the ten city’s demographics. In high School, Candice was excellent in both the basketball and volleyball. A legend in Volleyball history in San Diego, she was named CIF Volleyball player of the year 2003 after leading La Jolla Country Day to a CIF/ San Diego Section championship. This award is given to the overall best player in the city of San Diego. As a freshman in college on Stanford University’s 2004 Volleyball team, she earned a national championship title and ring. Log on to www.hattieshelpinghands.org for updated organization events and meetings to be apart of the history in the making. Registration and more information please call: Motif at 404 449-8371.
