STRATEGIES On Using Social Networking
For The Independent Artist by Jacquan @J_Nova84 Coleman
You’ll find the web littered with advice for independent music artists all about how you can use social network sites such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter to promote your music, attract a tribe of supporters and make more money. It’s easy to get lost in the hype which surrounds the latest and greatest social network. First it was all about MySpace, then Facebook came along and stole the show, then Twitter and so they rise and fall. You need good strategies to deal with social networks in order to leverage them for maximum advantage for your career and business. I give you these 3 strategies which I think you should keep in mind when it comes to your web music marketing…
Obscurity is your enemy, make sure you are seen in all the right places. Yes, this means you’ll create profiles on web sites such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, YouTube and also on sites more specific to your genre or niche. You realize there is nothing worse than a “ghost town” profile last updated over two months ago and which shows no real sign of activity. You can therefore see why you’ll have to spend time to update all these profiles and communicate with the users on the different sites, or get someone to do it for you. You can use a service such as Ping.fm to update multiple social networks from one central location. You can also use FriendFeed.com or SocialThing.com to track the different networks you’re active on.
You won’t get far with traditional advertising and marketing methods on the web. You know the type of advertising where you basically scream or flash your message anywhere you can in the hopes that you may distract the already over-distracted masses with your product. You want to rather build relationships with your potential tribe members and turn them into active supporters of you and your music. So… … be authentic, be honest, interact with your visitors as much as possible and over-deliver on value with the

music and the other content you provide on your web site. You want to also give tools such as “share this page” widgets to help your supporters spread the word about your music. Word of mouth is easy to create when your music is good, you are present and open and your web site is often updated with lots of quality content. People will share things they enjoy with friends and tell others how much they like you when you are nice to them. You can not buy word of mouth. You cannot avoid word of mouth when you offer outstanding value!
Your own web site, that is. Your own web site and domain name shows that you are serious about your music and also gives you control over the content and stats generated by your visitors. You create equity for yourself when you add content to your own web site which is not the case when you add content to social networking sites. Social networking sites do however offer you a potential source of visitors to your web site. Your strategy should be to direct visitors from outside web sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and others to your own web site. So… … use the social networks to add to the value of your own business, not build the business of the social networks. Conclusion… You need to be present and update often on the major social networks and other genre-specific networks. People talk about things which they enjoy and find valuable. People share music they like. So… … create and deliver value to people on your web site and with your presence and you’ll receive value in return. Your music marketing will be most effective when you have your own web site to which you can funnel visitors from social networks and other outside web sites.

very Saturday night in Orlando, Tavern on the Lake is home to one of Orlando’s most diverse and well traveled Dj’s we’ve had the pleasure to groove too. DJ M Squared mixes with the creativity, ingenuity and skill of a seasoned 5 star chef with all the freshest ingredients. He is definitely what we need to consume to grow big & strong!
How long have you been a DJ? How did you become interested in it? I’ve been DJ’ for 10yrs now. I always had a passion for music. I used to listed to DJ Nasty & Prostyle and got really excited by their mixes on the radio. I said to myself “how can I do that?” I didn’t know what to do with myself. I started with cassette tapes & worked my way up from there. I’m originally from Brooklyn NY but have been raised in Orlando since 1990. What is your favorite music to spin? Crowd to spin for? All genres are my favorite. I like to be diverse. I prefer music with soul. House, Hip Hop, Rock, anything that a person can identify & connect with soulfully. My favorite crowd is a diverse crowd that is open to all genres of music. I like to give the crowd the escape that they are looking for. I want to be their leader on the best musical journey I can give them. Where has DJ’ing taken you in the world? Any favorite places? I have been very fortunate in traveling in the

world with my Dj’ing, New Orleans, Paris France, Miami Fl, Houston TX, Washington DC, Iowa City IA. I just came back from the Red Bull Thre3Style SXSW edition in Austin, TX. That was an incredible experience. But Paris was my favorite, Paris was incredible. I may not have spoken French, but the great thing about music is it’s the universal language. Anyone can speak it. A classic question, any preference – electronic forms of music to spin or vinyl? I like to try to keep it traditional, 2 turns tables & mixer, but I do use Serato with my Mac laptop as a “record crate” to pull my mixes from. It allows me to have a wider base to choose from. It opens up my selection. I can reach broader audiences. So I have no real preference. I like both. It allows me to have a wider base to choose from. It opens up my selection. I can reach broader audiences. Do you believe vinyl will become extinct? No actually, I believe there has been a spike in vinyl sales in the last couple of years. People are rediscovering the warmth & depth of vinyl sound that you just can’t get with analog/digital sound. How do you keep yourself fresh to compete with the large market you’re in? I try to stay true to my own style. I listen to what’s playing, and travel to see what people respond to. I try to go out often to different events to see what’s out there. I ask myself what do I see as missing &
what people/crowd is missing. What are the crowds responding too. I study the greats. I study the people that inspire me to see what they are doing & apply it to my own style and that helps me a lot. Do you have any special preparations for an event? I try to get to the venue an hour before my set to feel out the crowd & the environment. I like to get myself mentally prepared for it during that time also. See what the environment is responding to. What do you have in your car to listen to? Or on your IPod/MP3? A lot of older stuff, a lot of Motown, 90’s, I’m a big fan of Gamble & Huff, Holland Dozier, Phil Spector.
more countries around the world. Be more global with my talent. Just basically building the M-Squared brand. Shout outs? -Shout out to Marlon Holloway, Lechon Kirb, Lyvwyr, Leroge, Amartre, Madd Illz, Soul Kamotion crew, Christina Clark, Aaron Arnold, Tek the Intern, and all my supporters! Contact Info: www.twitter.com/djmsquared facebook.com/pages/dj-m-squared djmsquared.com djsquarred.tumbler.com = blog
In your opinion – do you think Orlando has a good scene, opportunities for DJ’s? It’s a great place for a DJ to grow. It’s a great market for that. This is where I grew & am still growing. What would you recommend to up & coming DJ’s? Just focus on your craft. Always work on getting better. DJ Jazzy Jeff said “don’t be afraid to push the envelope.” He was one of my biggest idols as a kid. I got to spend time with him when I went to Paris. Meeting and talking with him was life changing for me. Where can Orlando go to hear you spin? You can hear me on Tavern on Lake every Sunday night at “Sunday Night Live” with Soul Kamotion & CeCe Teneal. Every Thursday night @ 11pm I spin “Street Noize” on WPRK 91.5 FM. I have a new live mix due to be posted on face book & you tube, which is my debut set from LIV “Miami Dirty Hairy” in Miami FL. I also currently working on an album titled “Open Format” due to be released later on this year. It’s going to feature local & national artists such as Madd Illz from Orlando & Leroge from Kansas City who’s a soul artist. What do you see yourself doing in 5yrs? I like to take it one day at a time. I see myself growing as a producer & a DJ. I want to reach out to WWW.FLYERPROMONOW.COM

hat makes every player run faster, defend better, and generally speaking hustle harder? The playoffs, duh! During NBA playoffs emotions run higher; the fouls are more flagrant and unlike regular season its win or go home. As an Orlando resident and sometime Magic fan (except when they are playing the Celtics) I don’t want to see them go home. The past few seasons the Magic has
perfect location Draft is undoubtedly the best place to be, second only to the Arena. You can enjoy patio seating while sipping a beverage and watching fans make their way to those coveted playoff seats. Or, sit inside at any guest table with a great view of the game. With three bars, a lounge, and a patio there is hardly ever a wait. It’s the perfect combination to get your drink and eat on for reasonable pricing. The best part about Draft is ME. Come have me wait on you and talk or argue sports whichever floats your boat. Just ask for TeeSPN, I’ll be waiting.
30 Second Timeout
sat atop the Eastern Conference. Making it almost a given that Magic fans will be flooding the streets of downtown Orlando much into June. Personally I’d like to see that again this year. The bars serve liquor longer, the clubs stay open later, and downtown just looks better decorated all blue and white. This year I have a more vested interest in the Magic making it to the Finals. I can tell you in one word, Draft. Draft Global Beer Lounge and Grill where you can go local and drink global is the best place to watch your home team prove they can go toe to toe with the best in the East. Located directly across the street from the new Amway Arena Draft is the perfect spot to watch the game, or pregame before you attend the game. The food is good the wait staff is gorgeous and the beer is plenty. At Draft you’re right in the mix when the game lets out and the fans are crunk and ready to celebrate. Although it has been open less than a month as of press time, Draft has already become the go-to place for your game day festivities. With competitive happy hour prices, the aforementioned beautiful staff and of course the

This 30 second timeout goes to the NBA refs. Take a chill pill on the foul calling please. Ya’ll are entirely too whistle happy. Players are going to get emotional and react its human nature especially with so much on the line. Stop calling Techs for every little thing. I understand the foul line is a big part of the playoffs. Every point counts. I am not opposed to attempting to get the players to stop whining and crying when a call doesn’t go their way. But don’t be ridiculous. I see some of you just watching a player waiting for him to say something out of pocket or react too strongly. That’s doing too much Mr. Ref.

What changes have you noticed in the music game? A lot have changed in this bihh, look what Rick Ross just did its goin’ to an independent game. What do you need a label for? If you can promote your product on your own, there is no need for a major label. All an artist needs to do is get a loan and hire a good ass promotion team(Ground Hogs) and you’ll get the same results. Now a days the cds aren’t selling, so no need for a distro deal, all you need is a wrap van 10k cds and three hard working street team members and hit them small towns around the big cities and you’ll see show money within 90 days. How have you adapted to the economy and how do you keep ahead of the curve? You need to scale back on your spending and focus on your goals in life. How I keep ahead of the economic curve is I learned how to turn a penny into twenty. An ancient Chineese secret lol What should we expect from the Dawgman Reunion Jam /Birthday Bash in May 2011? Its gonna be in HD!!! Be there or hear about it the next day. What advice would you give aspiring businessmen/promoters? It all depends on the business, but always do your homework in what ever business you get into and control your spending up front, let the business pay for the upgrades. Now for the promoters, that game is to be sold not told. Know lay around for the DME/Frontline collabo coming soon… And then the “DME/ Hollywood
East” project “A Night Called Power” coming to Club L.A.X. … I understand you have a record label , management company and a recording studio/lounge. Are you working with any artists right now? If so who are you working with? Yes, I do have a record label ( Clientell Music Group ) and a management company ( Morris Management Group ) and a recording studio ( Nu Finish Recording Studio/ Mixx Lounge) It’s really a One Stop Shop for all the aspiring artist / models (407-298-0140). With the label we are looking for hungry , motivated & humble artists to take to the next level. Now with the management company we are managing Big Gates Records artist FELLA and Flyboy Ent atrtist KILLA CREEPA, we cannot forget about the Clientell Party Starters (Baby Lac, White Boi Pizal, Mello & Dj All City) we are also looking for Djs that can get a Clientell Party started. Booking # 407-480-8042 Any special shout outs you want to give at this time? I would like to give a special shout out to my favorite Kracka – JT aka J Trouble and to the whole DME/CMG staff, without them we don’t have nothing. I also want to give a shout out to FlyerPromoNow for giving Orlando promoters another outlet in the promotion game. To all the Djs & Artists for grinding so hard and can’t forget all the haters, cause without ya’ll I would of been went content!!! Now FREE my nigga Mighty Mike, Spencer & Dre….Gone.
How did you come up with the name and what does it mean to you? I came up with the name INKY BOY for the obvious reason that I am tatted up from head to toe. I also chose this name because I think its pretty catchy!! There are a lot of artist who come out sounding the same, talking about the same topics. What separates you from other artists? I feel that there are a few factors that separate me from all other people coming out with music. For one im Italian and I rep that in my music. Secondly I have a very unique sound and I am very versatile in my style.

I have a Style that differs from everyone else and you can hear that when you listen to my music. I don’t talk about dope and bein a drug dealer, instead I talk about partying, and having fun because realistically that’s what life is about. Now I do have some songs that are a little “Harder” than others but that’s what makes me different. My up and coming mixtape is hosted by the powerhouse BIGGA RANKIN and I have party songs, techno songs, rock songs, reaggetone songs and Hard songs. This is the kind of mixtape where there truly is something for everyone on it.
nky aka Inky Boy born Michael Anthony Cerra on March 5, 1982 in Johnson City, NY. He has been doing music for over 4 years. His major influences has been Young Jeezy, Eminem, Jadakiss and Fabolous. A very divers artist that can write music to any type of beat or style of music that is sure to catch the ears of all those who listen. This talented artist is all about enjoying life and turning it into a party which is preached in his club style of music which he creatively writes on his own. Any special shout outs you want to give at this time?
As an artist the artists that inspire me the most are Lloyd Banks, Cam’ron, Eminem, Jadakiss, Fabolous, Young Jeezy, some Lil Wayne and Drake.
I wanna say thanks to BIGGA RANKIN and producer MELLE MEL (250 PLUS PRODUCTIONS), DREAD BEATS and M GEEZY for servin me up the fire ass beats on my mixtape, my boy CHEIGH for givvin me some fire hooks, and my manager and friend DJ SL JAMZ for all the help and support. I also wanna thank all the people that support me and my music cuz without yall I wouldn’t even be here. Shout out to my boy locked up too, you’re in my prayers and you know I got you homie, keep your head up.
What’s next for Inky Boy & where do you see yourself in the future? Next step for me Is keep getting better and stay positive. Droppin this mixtape is gonna be HUGE and you WILL see me at the top in the VERY NEAR FUTURE.

Maybe she was drinking a gallon of Absolute before deciding to wear this to a club. I’m sorry boo boo, but there is NO reason a woman should wear sandals to a night club. Its already bad you have on this ridiculous “Magic Mall” dress. Everything about this is just horrible. Please step your inner diva all the way up.
Mid-Drifter
Midrifs are meant for those around the ages of 16 to 25, and only if your have a flat stomach. I can’t even see a two-pack boo boo.
Living on the EDGE!!!
Problem for some, but a quick fix for those who can see they have no edges. There are plenty of ways to hide and/or disguise the lack of hair on the side of your head, and hunny that’s a lot. A really good hairstylist can not only help you get them back, but also give a style that covers it. A simple wrap would even help you. just don”t comb it all to the back.

FLYERPROMONOW presents
Who Rocked & Knocked Weekends in Orlando Club 57 West:
The main event on Saturday April 16, 2011 at Club 57 West was the celebration of Alex B.‘s 30th birthday/ Aries birthday celebration show. I enjoyed the venue, decoration and Alex really knew how to host his party. There were various performances and artists that did well BUT the sound wasn’t on point. All in all, the event went well and once again, congrats Club 57 West you rocked this weekend out!
Club Vain:
Ricky Rosay’s after party.
Ricky Rosay happened to be in the building holding it down after his and other artist’s performance in the Amway Center on April 6th, 2011. The event could have been better if they weren’t charging fellas $75 & $65 for the females at the door. I did enjoy the venue though with the three stories and the roof top above,(note: please fix that blown speaker on the Roof, it sounds horrible) Unfortunately, I had to leave and make my next stop to Club LAX to go to the Nicki Minaj after party but while I was there you guys rocked. Congratulations!
Club LAX:
Nicki Minaj’s after party.
Nicki Minaj was in Club LAX on April 6th, 2011 doing what she does best, signing boobs and representing for the females. She looked good as always and had many positive things to say while on stage. This venue is extremely nice with 3 floors, spread out and bars all around. Nicki had her nice pink and white Barbie palace on the third floor with pink and white balloons everywhere. Her security was on point and was not letting anyone come in unannounced. The crowd was wild and there were plenty of little Nicki Minajs everywhere. Everyone seemed to be having a blast and that’s the type of parties I enjoy attending, too

bad there was only 350 people in attendance, (that promoter needs to step up his game) Congrats Club LAX you rocked this night...
BARELY.
Club Chakra:
Toga Party for the 2k11 The 2k11 Toga Party was hosted by promo 407 Now, and the Sigmas & Betas from UCF. There were all types of Togas from towels being used as Togas to people actually going out and getting a toga specially made just for this event. Chakra was definitely on point this night and everyone was having a good time. Shout out to d.js Jay-R and Wizkidd that were on the turn tables, you guys definitely had the crowd pumped and moving! Promo 407 NOW, Sigmas and Betas you truly know how to throw a party , I will definitely be at the next one. You guys rocked!
Ending Note:
Surprisingly, all of the parties this month rocked out despite of the minor issues I mentioned above. I am excited to see who will rock and get knocked for the parties next month. Bring you’re A game when hosting/throwing an event , you never know who’s watching!
