ARE YOU THE
E m cee O
ppo rtu n iti es
by Kris Kinville of Talkoforlando.com
Orlando, I could have taken this week’s publication to write on a new business, artist or venue but instead I wanted to break down a local disbelief. I have been in love with Hip Hop since the age of 12 and the discovery of The Sugar Hill Gang. Being a lover of the written word and its power, it was easy to fall in love with masterful emcees. Over the years in promotions, I have been blessed to meet and interview many talented Orlando artists. Unfortunately when it comes to the Hip Hop scene in Orlando, many have expressed that there is no true opportunities for emcees to get noticed. I have heard many stories of how a person has talent but no chance to showcase that talent and gain the exposure that they need to “make it”, that “Orlando is not the place for Hip Hop”. When I hear this, it disappoints me because there is plenty of talent in the central Florida area that deserves the acknowledgment. And despite what they may believe, there are many chances for emcees to get noticed, if they are truly motivated to “get their grind on”. Too many individuals claim to be an emcee but never get beyond their local porches because they lack the hunger to make it happen. Also there HAVE been artists that have “made it” from Orlando area. The real shame is that a majority of these examples don’t claim Orlando as home and I hope to see that change. So it is with great pleasure and some help from friends, I present a current list of opportunities for an artist to network and get the exposure they crave…in my own way, I hope to help Orlando Hip Hop grow! The first resource I would like to introduce comes from a very talented emcee himself. Ian “Sb da Anomoly” is one of the most masterful emcees of the written word I have had the pleasure to come across. Most recently he has published a book of his best poems call “Words of Anomaly” and has started to make his rounds on the spoken word circuit. His contest “The Anomaly 20 Man Rap Cipher Contest” is an outstanding chance that many emcees haven’t taken advantage of. It is a contest of 20 emcees that are split into 4 groups of 5. They will rhyme in a cipher to several instrumentals with either written or free styled verses. The top emcee will be chosen by 3 Judges and the winner of each cipher will move on the final cipher which will be comprised of 5 people. The final cipher will also consist of rhyming to several instrumentals and the 2 top emcees will be selected to rap about a random topic given by the judges. The winner is rewarded with $200
cash & a HD, high quality video of his selected track. To enter please email sbtheanomoly@ aol.com or message him at facebook.com/ sbtheanomolyfanpage. Another opportunity is “Soul of the Lyricist Fridays” @ 174 Semoran Commerce Place Building B in Apopka from 9-2am. Developed by Joshua “Splitsoul” Rivera & Sb da Anomoly, it has grown to have a dedicated following each week. Each emcee has 6 minutes to shine and the first 5 emcees to show get a free promotional performance video shot & edited by Pelican Boyz TV and also free interviews and cipher footage shot and edited by Mattapan Dee! To sign up email: splitsoul33@gmail.com. The best location recommendation I can suggest is Club 57 West. This venue has hosted hip hop events for years and is known as the spot to be to battle/network. Located at 57 W Pine St Orlando, it has hosted many battles and artist premiers. Last month wrote about Truth 407 whom had his mix tape release party there. Most recently it held the Gold Star Entertainment Hip Hop Showcase on May 30th and the Florida Music Fest featuring SouthernSeedz performing LIVE alongside Freeze Development. They also have many weekly events such as Sound off Sundays, which is an open mic weekly event where an emcee can showcase his battle skills against his/her peers. Check them out on facebook or www.club57west.com.
get out there. In the past few months they’ve had artists such as P.I. Bang, 3tards, WesFif, and are currently looking for the month of July. To enter hit up Drew “DomeoLive” Haymen up on facebook or doemeolive@gmail.com or kylie.fitzgerald@ coxinc.com. You can also follow them on Twitter @DomeoLIVE and @MzMarina. Last but far from least, I have to shout out my own. TalkofOrlando.com offers many different promotional options from doing a photo shoot with feature article in the FlyerPromoNow publication, to tweet, text & email blasts that hit an audience of 8500 +. We also can feature your mixtape/cd on our website, which honestly has the highest promotional/entertainment internet traffic in Orlando. Feel free to hit us up at www. TalkofOrlando.com or talkoforlando@gmail.com In summary, this is just a VERY small tidbit of the resources available to emcee’s in Orlando. There are no more excuses! I don’t want to hear “there is no Hip Hop opportunity in Orlando”. I have many more resources I wouldn’t mind sharing if you take your art/skills seriously, and I have given you great places to start…NOW RUN WITH IT!
One of the biggest chances at large exposure is with our own Power 95.3 “Artist Spotlight”. It is a segment hosted by DomeoLive and MzMarina that helps get local (Orlando) artists a little bit of shine in the city. Domeo and Mz.Marina seek out the hottest artists, making the most noise around the city and they interview them (on camera), and then they will put together a short video, which they will put it up on Power953.com and their YouTube channel. It’s more or less if you have a buzz going, they have a platform to help you www.flyerpromonow.com

Sex Tips How To Spot A Single Woman
She’s full of eye contact
There’s a difference between a single woman and a serial flirt (the serial flirt may have a boyfriend, but she teases every man that comes within range). Unless she’s a chronic people-watcher, if her eye contact is darting all over the room as if looking for potential mates, you may be able to checkmate her. Women who are already attached usually don’t bother looking around the club (unless they’re looking for someone they know in particular), as they go to bars with no intention of meeting men and don’t need to check out the merchandise.
She’s making eye contact with you and smiling
Eye contact is usually one of the first signs of interest, and if she’s making intense eye contact with you from across the bar, then chances are she wants you to head on over and give her a try.
She’s talking to every guy in the bar
If you see her talking to many guys from a distance, it may mean that she’s open to conversation, therefore, it’s your cue to go up to her and find out all about her ways.

She looks at other couples with sadness
If you’re observing her from afar and you notice her looking at other couples, she could be longing for the days when she was once also attached. That’s where you come in.
Her body language says it all
If you’re familiar with the dating game, then you surely know that body language can say a lot about a person, and if she has a boyfriend, then chances are she won’t be twirling her hair and touching other men ever so casually. If you muster up enough courage to approach her, try to observe what her body language is saying: * Arms crossed, standing back: “Get away or I’ll kick my heel in your face.” * Touches your arm or leg subtly, or her own arm (she wants you to touch her): “Let’s keep talking.”
She’s a chatterbox
If you start talking to a woman you work with, for example, and in one conversation she tells you that she has a dog named Max, does a lot of cooking, goes to the gym every week, and takes art lessons, chances are she doesn’t have a man to come home to. The two tip-offs? She has a lot of time on her hands and does a lot to keep herself busy. And she’s very open and friendly when it comes to you.

Kold World Kold Blood T h e D o c u m e n ta r y Monday August 27th @ The Plaza Cinema Cafe
1 1 5 S. O r a n g e Av e. • O r l a n d o, F L 3 2 8 0 1 What was life like for you growing up in Orlando? What part of town are you from? Shit was wicked as a muthafucka growing up in West Orlando Richmond Heights. I started selling crack cocaine at the age of 12 just to eat a decent meal. I never really had a childhood. I never learned how to dribble a basketball, never learned how to throw a football, all I knew how to do was cut rocks. Shit, I remember I used to use crisco for lotion and I’m not talking about fresh out the store, I’m talking fresh out the fish grease pot. That’s what I call wicked, that’s where I come from. I learned how to turn nothing to something. What inspired you to want to rap? What made me start writing and doing music was to get truth to the streets, you got so many liars out here but I was really living like that. Really living with the snakes. Word to my father, if you in the jungle you gotta turn into a lion or a snake or something. These niggas was like unicorns in the rap game. I was just fucking around but at the same time I wanted to bring truth to the game. At what point did you know you wanted to make rap a serious career? The day I got to The Department of Corrections, I hit the compound and niggas was talking about “Armstrong on the compound” not even knowing who I was or what I looked like. Niggas was spittin my shit word for word, that’s when I knew I had to get out and get more serious about my craft. What kind of impact did going to prison have on you and your music? I feel like I grew as an artist behind bars. A muthafucka who ain’t never been through nothing can’t talk about nothing. Going to The Department of Corrections was going to hell in my eyes. I went from riding in Benzes to shoveling piles of dirt with a little bitty shovel, and from waiting in 5 star restaurants for steak and lobster to can’t wait to get in line to buy Oodles of Noodles in Commissary. I’ve been to juvenile facilities to county jails but nothing is like being miles and miles away from home in prison. They might ship you off to another
12

How much time have you done collectively behind the wall?
a book of stamps for less than they sell on the compound. There are some people who get rich in prison who ain’t never getting out, all they know is prison. I done seen a muthafucka spending another whole life sentence with a whole pound of reefer on the compound, two or three cell phones, an ounce of dope, a hundred bills on him with a blade off the lawn mower tucked in his pants. This nigga don’t give no fuck about nobody. He’s in there for life.
I went in when I was twelve years old for six months, and from that point I been in and out that muthafucka. I’d say a clean ten years.
Did you get fan mail? I was getting fan mail at least 4 times a month. I would never respond but I’d be like that’s what’s up.
How did you stay on top of what was going on in music while you were locked up?
Why didn’t you respond?
facility in the middle of the night and it might be two or three days before you can tell your loved ones you aren’t there anymore. Just to name a few of the fucked up things that I experienced behind that wall. Anyone who’s been through hell and back, I want to hear everything they got to say. I done been to hell and now I’m back to tell the story.
Fortunately I didn’t blow up all my bridges, my girl was super 100 (shout out to her), I used the phone every day. I had XXL, Orlando Sentinel, Hip Hop Weekly, Black Men, & Complex. If it could be in the facility I had it. I got visits every week from my girl and she’d bring me music. I was blessed to have a muthafucka on my team who was 100. I had three or four people who stayed on beat other than my girl, and Gambino (Mario) was one of them. Were you able to continue getting money while you were locked up or did that stop? No, it didn’t stop at all. You can still get money, just to a different degree. It depends on what facility you’re going to, I moved around to so many different facilities. I went from 33rd, to CFRC, to Lake Butler, to East Unit, to the Work Camp, then to the Main Unit, and back to CFRC and so on. That’s how much I was bounced around. Everywhere you went might have been different, this compound might have cash on that bitch but the next might have stamps as cash. For example u can trade one cigarette for 2 stamps, that’s like a dollar and I can sell
I didn’t really know how to respond. I was so closed off and stuck in my ways in that spot to where I couldn’t get my thoughts together. I shut myself down to everybody else other than who I knew personally. In my mind, I didn’t have the capacity to because I was into so much shit. In prison it’s still like the streets, so you still gotta think about survival. Prison is like a college campus, you can roam the whole compound. You have someone for everything. You got the weed man, you got the rock man, three or four tattoo men, three or four people cutting hair, even a cigarette man. Everything on the street but a pussy. If your face good and your money right you got some pussy in there from the CO ho, in certain spots. How is your relationship with your fans My fans are all I got. Without my fans I’m nothing, I am what my fans is. I love them unconditionally. If I was in a position, I’d do something every month for my fans. I’d pay four or five muthafuckas rent for a month. I’m not trying to be in the club popping bottles all the time. I wanna be able to pick people out at my concerts and have my manager get their contacts so we can get at them and help out if needed. I’m a firm believer in the law of attraction. A closed hand can’t get no money. If you don’t help nobody, ain’t nobody gonna help you. As long as you’re a giver you will always prosper. Real fans study who you are, real Armstrong fans know who I am. They see, feel and know who I am. Where does the title of “Kold World, Kold Blood” come from, and is there anything you want to say about the latest project? The title comes from my brother Aaron. I watched one brother kill another brother, that’s when I knew it was a cold world. This is my first tape I recorded being free. The last three tapes I recorded were during the time I was on house arrest with restraints www.flyerpromonow.com

on my ankles. Kold World, Kold Blood is the first project in three years with me being free. On the road, doing shows. I can work, I can move, I can win, I can lose. I’m enjoying life, talking about real life situations. Motivational shit. Shit you can listen to and kick it with your Ol boy. KWKB is my best mixture hands down. All the way 100. It drops Tuesday, September 11th with Datpiff exclusively, Kold World, Kold Blood hosted by DJ D-Strong and DJ Holiday. A lot of people may question or take issue with your content portraying or glorifying violence, how do you respond to that? I’m just telling my story. Take Adele for example, I listen to her music and she was successful because she told her story and wrote music from her own perspective with real life situations that she experienced. What else a nigga like me gonna rap about but robbing, shooting muthafuckas and selling dope? Glorifying? I’m just telling my story. I ain’t got no Maybach yet, I can’t rap about that. Shooting niggas, selling real dope, or selling dummy bricks. Whatever it took to get that sack, that’s what I was about. In the streets its fuck what you did to get that sack, just get that bitch. If you had to choose one song off of “Kold World, Kold Blood”, what would be your favorite? If I had to choose one it would have to be Can’t be life featuring Slim E. That actually brings me to my next question, in that song Can’t Be Life ft. Slim E, in one of your lines you said “if I turn the other cheek I’d be a real nigga, if I call my nigga peeps I’d be a fuck nigga” what did you mean by that? I had the situation with my man getting killed by one of my younger niggas, both of them was like my brothers. This nigga was trippin on dope and damn near everything but crack cocaine and shot my nigga in the back of the head in a Walmart parking lot right in front of my car on camera. This was my lil nigga but at the same time he was out his damn mind, you don’t kill your partner’s, partner. “If I turn the other cheek I’d be a real nigga,” to the streets. If I fuck with you, I also fuck with your kids, and your momma. They aren’t thinking about how I just saw his kids, and I just saw his mom, so that’ll be like fuck them. To my real niggas who know me I would have been a fuck nigga. So what do I do? I “called my nigga peeps,” right away. They called
14

the police, his family was who I notified. Once they notified the police, they went back to the Walmart and saw everything on the camera. All Strong had to do was say I didn’t have nothing to do with that shit, and it was all on camera. At the end of the day I lost two niggas off some baser shit. What did that teach you about society? It was one of the most valuable lessons life could have ever taught me about mankind. It showed me who was real and who wasn’t real. Deep down inside you gotta ask yourself, if I was who they portray me to be, could I ride around everyday by myself without shots ringing out? Could I do shows out here without getting shot at? Could I shoot videos in the hood? Fuck no. The fake might out number the real but the real out weighs the fake. That’s who I focus on, the real muthafuckas. These niggas that be talking ho shit, they was my enemy before I even went to prison. They do that to be relevant. They won’t show their face and you won’t ever see a video with them showing their face on camera saying this shit. They just hide behind usernames. I call them computer internet fuck niggas, pussy niggas kill yourself. What can fans look forward to from Armstrong in the near future? My documentary Kold World, Kold Blood. Shout out to Ryan Snyder and his partner Jerry for making the whole documentary a reality. Chris and I traveled all over shooting the documentary. We flew to LA, Venice Beach, Compton, to the Bluff in Atlanta and everywhere in Orlando just to name a few spots. What side of Armstrong will fans get to see in this Documentary? Well, we went straight to the root, to my father. He played a big part in my documentary. You get to see my whole life, the good, the bad and the ugly shit. The story of how I got my name, going to prison, shooting at niggas and getting shot. If you really wanna know who Armstrong is, go see the Documentary on Monday, August 27th 7pm at The Plaza Cinema Cafe Downtown Orlando. This is my life, no fabrication. I’m a young nigga but I’m an old school nigga. Armstrong worry about where them muthafuckin apples came from, I wanna go to the source. People say “don’t worry about where the apples came from, just eat the pie” I speaking for every real nigga who wanna know where the apples came from. What’s the relationship between yourself and Hollywood East?
First and foremost that’s my brother, that’s my manager and my nigga. Authentic from day one. Laugh together, cry together, get dead ass drunk together. All the way 100. What did you know about Hollywood East before you met him? I knew of him but I didn’t know too much about him. When I first got out of prison I kept hearing his name ringing out in the streets. Running them clubs, throwing some of the biggest parties and shit like that. We had a real good relationship since out the gate. Chris ain’t never come to me as Hollywood East. He came to me as Chris the man, a real nigga. We been rocking ever since. And i can’t forget about his partner Dom, she’s a fuckin beast on this business shit. That’s my team. What’s your take on Orlando’s music scene? I think the ones who are in a position would rather fuck with someone from a foreign land than help someone here. These niggas got fucked up personal vendettas. They might say “I just don’t like Strong” and they don’t even know why. 90% of Orlando’s music scene is like that. I’m talking about the DJ Nastys, Disco and Disco Jr just to name a few. Even The Men’s Closet, and Sammy is my man but I know they have outlets they have yet to show Armstrong. I’m talking about the people who see how I’m moving, they see the hunger in my eyes but they just act like they don’t see it, they don’t believe. They’re so quick to promote and jam some shit from a whole different land 20,000 miles away and them niggas don’t give a damn about them. I do wanna shout out DJ D-Strong who has always stuck his hand out for me since I came home, he’s been a very supportive DJ for the FBMLE family it ain’t about no money with him. Shouts out to DJ Elamentz, and to Four Stacks I can sneak in the club and they be playing my shit. I’m talking about people who play my shit without me having to ask, I mean a cave man will play my shit when I’m in the building, that’s easy. For the DJs who is spinning my shit and I ain’t call your name, keep spinning it and it’ll get back to me. If you fuck with Strong, I fuck with you. I’ll do whatever drops any DJs want me to do, whoever supports FBMLE can all eat together. As far as radio is concerned, I don’t focus on that. I’ll just keep doing my thing and sooner or later they’ll get at me. Shout out to 95.3 and 102 Jamz. Speaking of FBMLE what does it stand for?
Fuck Bitches Money Laundry Empire. I hear some major labels are starting to reach out, can you tell me more about that? Yea, my management chopping it with a few right now… We just working. What would you say to any artists who may have an issue with you, and how are you handling those situations these days? Any nigga with a problem with Armstrong gotta look themselves in the mirror. Only a fuck nigga make fuck nigga moves. If you one of them niggas who’s name is just a screen name without a face on the computer but you talking like your King Kong, like I said, kill yourself. If you feel that way turn the camera on. Death to the computer bandits. I’m a business man, I don’t have no problem with no man right now. I ain’t a fan of warfare anymore, I’m a fan of getting money. For all the rappers from my city who are doing they thing, keep grinding. We about to blow the roof off this muthafucka. We got next. What’s currently in your CD deck? Right now in my truck I’m riding to that Curtis Mayfield, Taylor Allderdice by Wiz Khalifa, The Enforcer by Killa Creepa, Unreasonable Doubt by Giulio Fo, McRado’s Part 2 by Eldorado Red, 431 Days by Trouble, Nigganati by Alley Boy , and I also fuck with Curren$y, The Stoned Immaculate, I recommend everyone go buy that album. Is there anyone you want to collaborate with? I want to collab with Jesus Christ and Lucifer on the same track. (laughs) Any last shout outs? Shout out to Jesus Christ. That’s my Lord and Savior.
