Trina As a female rapper in a male-dominated genre, what do you think has been the biggest obstacle in your pursuit of success? Sometimes, it’s pretty overwhelming, when you think about being on a show and the line-up has five or six guys and one girl. But with me being the only girl, it made me stronger and kept me focused. So the only obstacle was myself, because I realize that I could do whatever I wanted to do as long as I stayed determined. I just try to maintain and stay in my lane, so that I can continue to put out albums and just continue to be me. Having spent well over a decade in the music game, what old obstacles do you think female rappers have overcome, and what new obstacles have emerged in the contemporary music landscape? When I first started out, every woman had to be a sex symbol kind of thing, and every woman had to be sensual and provocative. I guess it was just a part of the era of music at that time. Now, women are still sexy, but they are more flirty and fun. And I see more women talking about getting girls to be on a whole other level and to be independent and just be a “boss chick.” I think that’s the difference now: you see more women stepping out on their own and making their own money. It’s way different, just a decade later. There’s always going to be obstacles, no matter what happens. I just think every artist, especially

females, have to understand what works best for them. You really have to understand what it is that you can bring out of yourself to constantly recreate and revamp every time the music changes or every time you come out with something different. Because when you evolve, you grow; and because you’ve seen and done so much, you have to put all that into action and show it. Although several accolades have been attached to your name, with the release of your forthcoming project, you will join a rare club of hip-hop emcees to record six studio albums. Even so, on a more personal level, what professional accomplishment do you consider to be your great contribution to hip-hop? I really adore my fans and how much effort they have put in supporting me for so long. From the very beginning, everybody that loved me back then has grown up with me as I grew up. I think that is really important. Because of them, I have been able to stay relevant and stay consistent. I have been able to do this for a decade because people want me to continue doing what I have been doing for this long. Over the years, you have built a brand and empire that extends beyond the music business. As a businesswoman, what professional lessons played a role in your success? Well, coming into the business – as a young artist –

it was all about having fun: music, touring, partying, collaborating with other artists, and just having a great time meeting a lot of different people. But as you continue to do the same thing over and over, the “business” side starts to become more clear, because you start getting offered different things and being placed in certain situations. And there’s a part of you that begins to grow up and say: “Hey, this is more than art, now. You are a brand.” And when that happens, you become more of a businessperson. You become more involved in everything that you’re doing, and you’re not just jumping from a plane when it’s time to do a show or signing the dotted line just because you’re in a meeting. You finally get to a point where you actually know what’s going on around you, because this is the life that you have grown into. You need to be involved. You need to know the business. I don’t let my manager handle everything. You need to know when business is good. You need to know when it’s slow. You need to know the details of your budget. And you need to know all the things that are important about your career. I think that’s what made me put my foot down and have a say-so and feel comfortable saying: “No, I don’t like this!” or “Let’s try this!” When did this finally become clear to you? I started looking at my career as a twenty-four hour job. I call it work. I don’t really look at it as just having fun. Fun comes along with it, but there is a lot of work that has to be done, too. There are a lot of stressful long nights – and early mornings. There are times when you have a lot of fun and travelling – and there are times when you have to be away from family. So every time I do a project, I think of the business aspect. I think of how it’s going to affect me, and how it’s going to benefit me. Everything! [laughing] I think I have always been guided or taught how to be in control of what I am doing. No matter what, I can perform throughout the entire year, with or without an album. So I had to understand that this is not just doing performances. This is my business. This is a career. This is how I live. This is how I eat. This is how I provide for my family. Trina, it’s really inspiring to hear you talk. As a native of North Carolina, I remember that there used to be a day and age when Southern rap was not considered hip-hop. In your mind, when did the South become a key player in the hip-hop game? Absolutely, I totally agree. At first, people really did not take the South that seriously. It wasn’t considered real hip-hop – just fast music, a lot of up-tempo, bootyshaking dance music. Over the years, it has gotten stronger, and there are some Southern artists – Trick [Daddy], T.I., Ludacris, Lil’ Wayne, Rick Ross – that took what they believed in and turned it into a whole hip-hop genre. I’m really honored to be a part of that movement. There are so many different artists from different parts of the South that have different types of music. And now it’s taking over –

and at first it wasn’t even considered! At what point did you officially realize that rapping was something you could do as a career? Oh, this is one of those moments that left me in total shock! I had just recorded “Nann,” my first record with Trick, and he invited me to his album release party. And I was thinking: “Okay, cool. I’m going to go watch him perform, do his single, whatever.” I was just there having a nice time. He was performing and everybody was having a good time dancing and partying. And he played the record, but when it got to my part, he stopped, talked to the crowd and said: “Do you guys want to see Trina come up here and do her show?” [laughing] I literally ran out of the club! [laughing continues] I was thinking: “Oh, you’re crazy. I’m not doing it. No way. Absolutely not. I’m not getting on that stage.” It was a really funny moment, but then he was so serious. I just said: “OK.” When I got on the stage and started performing “Nann,” every girl in the club was singing the verse. I was in awe. From that moment, I really started thinking about it; and when he first started his tour, I actually was able to go on and perform. Tallahassee Homecoming – that was a huge, huge show. They went crazy, and with that performance, it literally jumped inside: “I’m never doing anything else.” And it was one of those things I took seriously. It became really serious, and I put out my first album within the next year. A large number of women look to you for inspiration. As the founder of the Diamond Doll Foundation, what is a crucial message that you want to leave with the young women of this current generation? No matter what happens in life, you have to believe in yourself. Sometimes I find myself thinking that the people I thought believed in me the most believed in me the least. One of the hardest things you have to do is feel like you are walking alone. I just became a very strong person, because I just knew that there was nothing I could not do. So you have to be very focused and fight for whatever it is that you want to do. And give it all your all, 150 percent. The world isn’t perfect: everybody has a past and everybody has a story. But I think that if you are 100 percent genuine with yourself and just do whatever it is that you love, then it’s so easy to make everybody else believe in it, because you believe in it. What makes you gravitate towards “diamonds,” and how do they relate to your persona? I just think a diamond is like a really priceless thing. They’re rare and beautiful. And they’re very sexy and alluring. They also make you fabulous! [laughing] But I just think a diamond is a really priceless thing. And diamonds are a girl’s best friend! [laughing continues] Interview curtsey of http://claytonperry.com/

STD

MYTHS You can catch an STD from getting a tattoo? The answer is yes. You’re mildly susceptible to catching HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatis C since they are the three STD’s that can be contracted through contact with an infected person’s blood. The risk of actually catching an STD after getting a tattoo is very low. You’d have to have the absolute worst luck to happen to get tatted right after an infected person by a tattoo artist who used an unsterilized needle.

You can catch a STD from smoking a blunt with someone?

Yes. You can contract herpes if sharing a blunt with someone infected with the disease. But you can relax a little. The only way to contract it is if the infected person has open sores, cuts or bleeding in their mouth. Unless you plan on doing oral searches on everyone you smoke with it’s best you either not worry about it too much, or just smoke by yourself.

You can catch a STD from getting or giving head? Yes. You run the risk of getting an STD anytime you participate in oral sex. Though the risk is lower than it would be from unprotected anal or vaginal sex, if the person going down has any cuts or open sores in their mouth their blood can enter your body via the lining of the vagina or the tip of the penis. The same goes for the person receiving it. Chances of catching something increase if you’re letting them “skeet skeet” in your mouth.

You can catch STD’S with 2 condoms on? You can catch a STD drinking after others? Yes, but not a STD technically. You can contract oral herpes from sharing drinks with an infected person if they have open sores. It’s the same thing as sharing drinks with someone who has the common cold or hanging around someone with the pink eye. You’re more likely to catch mono though. Either way, just be careful.

Yes. Wearing two condoms during intercourse actually heightens the risk of contracting an STD because the excess friction of wearing two condoms could cause both of them to break, thus exposing skin on skin. So being extra safe isn’t necessarily the best bet

Is Facebook Ruining Your Relationship

Is

Facebook fu**in up your relationship that is the question? Well well well where do I start, this is a topic that I guarantee has been plaguing relationships all over the world. Actually I bet someone is getting caught right now messaging someone they not supposed to or either getting slapped over a status lol! Statistics says that FB adds approximately half a million new users daily. So that means that the chances of your partner befriending your secret crush, lover or mistress and you getting caught red handed grows higher and higher every day. They say its six degrees of separation but social networks are making it more like two. For those who don’t know FB is probably the biggest #snitch on the internet. Every single move that you make gets blasted to everyone, depending on your profile settings. FB will tell your man or woman any and everything that you do (from liking a status, to commenting on a photo, or simply conversing too much with the opposite sex).

20

| www.flyerpromonow.com - savannah

These are all things that can get you the evil eye or cursed out as soon as you walk in the house. Because it’s characters instead of a conversation we can never really tell the persons real emotions (unless the specifically use symbols i.e. !, #, etc.) so often times when your partner reads your timeline or status they get to take it anyway they want to, which often may lead to a keyed car or a black eye. So how do you prevent FB from controlling your relationship? Rule number one, understanding that Fb is a #snitch, so therefore you have to be careful about what can be taken many different ways. Also if you don’t want your other snooping then just simply change your settings and block they ass. But if your dating a secret F.B.I. agent that knows how to crack all your passwords, makes dummy profiles and adds you or either logs into their friends account just to snoop on you, then im sorry to say it you might as well get that ice for that eye now or just move to twitter…KANG!

Is

anyone out there tired of the same issues being spit out of Indie artist’s lips? The lyrics from most male artists centers around drugs, money, violence, and disrespect to black women. These few topics seem fun to talk about because that’s all that many young black men and women know. But I think we can clearly see the negative effects of this “trap” style thinking. And if you don’t know, I’m going to try and explain why the way we live is getting worse and worse and how higher up persons WANT to keep it this way. I mean think about it. Our first leading hip hop artist, Tupac, is dead because he tried to secretly tell us that we are being bamboozled by higher authorities. He was boastful and spoke of unity in the black community. He was a revolutionary who shouted for changes in every black community in this country. And to me Tupac is very similar to Jesus because just like those kings that were in power during Jesus’s time who tempted Judas with riches to kill him, the heads of this country, at minimum, killed Tupac because he wanted to share some important information to his vast fans and followers that totally went against the order. Tupac shouted change in the ghetto and spoke over unions. He wanted government to recognize those in poverty and wondered why our government would not do something about it. He had a large ban of white and black followers and those higher up felt like they HAD to destroy him or there would be another “rebirth” or revolution in our black communities especially since the next white generation at the time had

22

| www.flyerpromonow.com - savannah

becoming more accepting of blacks during this time. So what did they do. Killed him. With the murder of Tupac and Biggie, began the media’s untrue version of the facts. The media changed it to an East Coast/West Coast “beef.” Which perpetuated their idea of programming the black community to be against each other violently so that we would kill each other, and sell crack to our people, and disrespect our women so bad that most mothers in this country are alone. The black community still sounds like we have chains on our feet since the 1700s. If Tupac were alive after 15 years to come and look at our hip hop culture I think he would be somewhat disturbed. Even those classic artists of that time appear to have stepped back from the scene of music because lyrics on real issues is a thing of the past now. There’s no real passion in it to me anymore. All I see are people that want fame and riches. I feel asTupac spoke of the catastrophes going on in our community... no young leader has taken THAT type of stand since him. See, those in the music industry did not know that Hip Hop would be so successful due to these Tupac and Biggie. Once the heads recognized that, they wanted their hand in the pot of money. Once the heads were able to get the top two artists out the way, they could control the masses again by tellnig artists what they could and could not talk about because the heads know that the promise of money and cars and houses is too much for someone that has never indulged in those experiences. Why else do you think hip hop is contaminated with songs concerning drugs, money, violence, hoes? Because if we hear it enough then it becomes acceptable. If we want something better to come out of hip hop, then let’s talk about something mind blowing and use more complicated lyrics that the average Joe can’t duplicate.

Does Size Matter? These days everything is supersized, cars, jobs, meals, bank accounts and the list goes on. So I don’t blame a dude for wondering if the same rules apply to their “package” when it comes to satisfying their woman. Is bigger always better? This is the age old question that has yet to be answered definitively. I’m going to take a shot at offering up my two cents. Size does matter fellas! No woman wants a man who will struggle to please her, simply because their equipment isn’t “heavy duty” enough to handle the job. I mean size is already half the battle. If your package is big to begin with, then you have less work cut out for you in the end. Little penis dudes just have to work too hard. I can see ya’ll now, panting and sweating trying your hardest to make your “little bit” work and not actually accomplishing a damn thing except a whole lot of frustration for your girl. That’s right, I said frustration! Small dicks piss women off! That why us women have developed a little “test” to see if you package is gonna cut it We don’t want to waste the time getting excited, if there isn’t gonna be a payoff in the end. This is what we do: We brush up against you with our hands or butt, and for your sake, you better hope we feel something impressive, because that’s the deciding factor in whether or not you’ll be getting any!

Now for all you “little guys” out there, all is not lost. If you have discovered that what you have to work with just ain’t enough for any grown woman. Then get to spending your money and giving head. That’s right I said it! The harsh reality is that your pockets and your tongue will be the only thing keeping her around. If she told you otherwise, she’s lying. Oh, and she’s probably fantasizing about the other dude while you’re inside of her, I’m just saying. Listen fellas, I’m not out to hurt feelings or step on toes, I’m just being more honest with you than your girl will ever be. Now , to all the Big Dicks out there, this is not an invitation to go shoving it anywhere it will fit. Use your gift wisely. I’ve learned that the only thing worse than little dicks are worn out ones. And to the Little Dicks of the world, don’t go being hasty and dumping your girlfriends. If your lady has chosen to accept your inadequacies, and love you anyway. Then she deserves all of the money and head you can give her.

Luke’s Take on the Current High Profiled Industry Artists

L

uther “Luke” Campbell, the man whose bootyshaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke declares his greatest rappers alive. After listening to the new Jay-Z and Kanye West album, Watch the Throne, I was left hungry for more. Ten songs wasn’t enough. They are touring together, so I expected them to give their fans more than a quickie. No disrespect to Kanye, but I certainly hope Jay-Z has another solo album in the works. On his own, Jay-Z is the greatest rapper alive. Hell, Forbes magazine just named Hova the highestearning rap star. Others on the list include P. Diddy, Kanye, Lil Wayne, and Eminem, another guy I think is right up there with Jay-Z. Eminem raps his ass off on every album he’s put out. In fact, aside from Jay-Z and Eminem, there are very few hip-hop artists who can really claim the title. In the ‘90s, you knew Tupac and Biggie Smalls were the absolute best in the game. Those guys dropped verse after verse without their buddies rapping on their tracks. Nowadays you have too many hip-hop male performers doing collaborations with guest rappers.

A Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, or Drake album will almost always have some other artist showing up to rap every five minutes. Carol City native Rick Ross has certainly evolved into a helluva lyricist. But he needs to do a song on his own that will stand the test of time like Biggie’s “Juicy” or Tupac’s “Dear Mama.” The same can be said of Lil Wayne and Drake. I’d like to hear those two cats produce an album without a guest appearing on songs. Don’t get me wrong — Lil Wayne’s lyrics are out of this world. But you can’t just do one verse per song and then call yourself the greatest. That’s bullshit. I want to hear an album that is all Weezy, not Lil Wayne & Friends. Can you imagine if Peter Frampton was constantly doing guest spots with the Steve Miller Band? Or if Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Garcia had done a gazillion duet albums? No, you can’t. So why does every rapper today have to drop a line for a DJ Khaled compilation? If Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, and Drake want to take that title from Jay-Z and Eminem, they need to carry albums on their own.

Club Texting cAN i kICK it.... You were told to take off your clothes not your leg.

I’m not saying who was DJ’ing but LAX was wack and you can tell. Only in 2011 do we get dressed up to go to the club and text. Look like this promoter wasn’t on top of his game. SMH.

Worst Dressed A woven yarn dresses are not, and never will be in style. Sorry boo boo you look like a cab drivers car seat.

Upgrade your day care. The kid on the left seems to have women issues, but lil man on the right is enjoying the show with a fine glass of juicy juice. Guess they don’t make baby sitters like they used to.

Best Dressed School Girl was the theme for this party. Best of all was this simple number. Good job shorty.
