7 ASSIGNMEN T 01 The final task of Assignment 01 was to create a speculative final model which combines elements from each of the three previous studies. With no site specified, I decided to concentrate on the formal and spacial qualities embodied in the studies and used this book as inspiration to start pulling them out to create a catalogue which would inform my final model. The author travelled to five different cities to create his spacial catalogue so it proved a valuable companion in this final task.

23 ASSIGNMEN T 02 We chose this site as it conveys elements of infrastructure, landscaping and built form; however, it proved incredibly difficult to, not only photograph, but also to create a reasonably consistent final model. Reasons for this included: - The site was very busy meaning that pedestrians kept getting in our photograph frames - Context Capture struggled with the reflective surfaces of the steel sphere and the water features - The site was rather large and sprawling which made it difficult for us to co-ordinate our photographing

25 ASSIGNMEN T 02 We chose this photograph this old pumphouse as it was alot smaller than our last site and thus believed it would be easier to capture than the last one. An interesting site, containing infrastructure, landscaping and built form, this scan was captured far more successfully though not without issues: - The site was still quite busy meaning that pedestrians kept getting in our photograph frames - Context Capture struggled with the reflective surfaces of the river and water feature - Context Capture struggled to define the boundaries between the foliage and sky

27 ASSIGNMEN T 02 For a change of scene, the last site we selected for scanning was this scatepark we stumbled across on our jurney through London. As it was not as complex as our previous sites we predicted that this scan had the potential to be captured to a fuller extent and were correct. Reasons for this included: - Far from being a hindrance the graffiti actually gave the software more points of referance - The enclosed nature of the site meant that the images taken had more consistency to them - The software still struggled with the foliage and sky but it was simple to remove these in rhino

ASSIGNMENT 03
31 ASSIGNMEN T 03 The old flour mill is situated on the sea front in the heart of Milazzo town, consisting of a series of structures in varying styles, the site is now derelict and in need of re-development. The building has a very large external mass and a strong roadside frontage, giving it a key presence in the area, with a small gated courtyard to the rear of the site serving as the sole access point. Stretching 120m and with a depth of around 75m the abandoned infrastructure has much to offer.

33 ASSIGNMEN T 03 Exploring the internal spaces gave me a much more informed indication of the interlinking areas that make up the site and revealed to me how it could be redeveloped to encourage tourist interaction along the waterfront. The most important part of the site is the large room containing the concrete silos which would have been used in the storage, manufacture and production of grain. Located just off of the courtyard space I believe this space should be retained and celebrated.

SITE 2 // LIPARI UNIT TRIP SITE SELECTION
35 ASSIGNMEN T 03 The second site we visited was an old pumice stone mine located on the coast of Lipari island. Abandoned after further mining was banned when the island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is now a huge sprawling collection of empty buildings and rusting mining infrastructure. The bottom of the site contains a multitude of large buildings and a huge pier, once regularly visited by industrial container ships, extends far out into the deep sea.

SITE 2 // LIPARI UNIT TRIP SITE SELECTION
37 ASSIGNMEN T 03 As we climbed the mountain behind the industrial buildings along the coastline, the true extent of the mining operation was revealed to us. Huge areas of stone had been gouged out of the hillside leaving a series of wounds, valleys and incomprehensible vertical drops in their place. The area had been divided into 3 interconnected shelves and huge pieces of rusting machinery and conveyor belts cascaded down the landscape, contrasting with the natural coastline in the distance.

45 ASSIGNMEN T 03 Assignment 03 involved overlaying three types of structural systems on our chosen site ; section active, form active and surface active. To get inspiration and work out how these types of structural systems work in practice I started my research by looking at Henio Engel’s extensive documentation in his book Structure Systems. It helped inform this final assignment and allowed me an insight into the potentials of inhabiting and connecting each of these systems.

55 ASSIGNMEN T 03 After researching into Milazzo’s past I discovered that it used to be an incredibly important distribution port for the region - regularly being totally consumed by huge deliveries of wine barrels bound for Liverpool. I decided to look into how these barrels used to be stored before transportation and I thought it would be an interesting exercise to explore the large and small grains by using the individual barrel as the small, becoming part of the larger picture when replicated and stacked.
CONCEPTUAL APPROACH EXPERIMENTING WITH LARGE & SMALL GRAIN
56
ASSIGNMEN T 03
57 ASSIGNMEN T 03 I started by creating a structural frame capable of storing the barrels in. By taking out some of the storage cells I was able to create a route through the structural element. When these blocks are connected together and stacked in different ways I can create an interesting journey through my building and allow the visitor to interact with the different scales of the proposal.
INHABITATING THE STRUCTURE WORKING INBETWEEN THE LARGE & SMALL GRAIN
58 ASSIGNMEN T 03
When the barrels are placed into the structural element, a human scale is created whereby the visitor can determine distances and heights by referring to the number of barrels in their vicinity. Whilst each barrel on its own is part of the small grain, as you can see from the image above when these are inserted into the structural elements they quickly become part of the larger.
