While spring has yet to come, and Mother Nature has yet to show us some mercy, we North Dakotans still have to embrace the harsh conditions and make the most of our time inside. Despite these variables that can effect us actually getting out in the community, there are still plenty of opportunities to help and support our local businesses during the winter months. You may not have the opportunity to have some cocktails on the LÜFT rooftop or go kayaking down the river, but there are still endless activities to stay connected to and within the community.

Some people take this time to do some early spring cleaning and bring donations to thrift stores and shelters. Others step inside a warm restaurant or brewery with some friends to catch up and get out of the house. You can even learn more about North Dakota's rich history at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, where admission is free! Needless to say, it's important to stay connected and support business owners around you in these tundralike times.

Nobody knows connections and networking better than members of the Young Professionals Network (YPN). YPN members have integrated themselves within the Bismarck-Mandan community and take pride in both the businesses they're a part of, as well as the ones they vocally support. I'm thrilled to share some YPN members' stories and what the Bis-Man area does for them!

THIS IS QUITTING Creating a Healthier Tomorrow

Why Tobacco Free ND's Mission Can Help Solve Problems in the Workplace & Beyond.

Healthy communities grow healthy businesses. The stronger our communities are, from a health perspective, the healthier our businesses can be. For nearly 40 years, Tobacco Free North Dakota has fought to repel the tobacco industry in North Dakota. We’ve had tremendous successes, through litigation with the Master Settlement Agreement in 1998 and through policy initiatives, like the implementation of the state’s strong Indoor Smoke-Free Air Law in 2012. North Dakota’s exemplary Indoor Smoke Free-Air Law created a generation of kids that don’t know what it’s like to walk into a restaurant and be asked “smoking or non-smoking seating?” The older generation knows that experience. It didn’t matter where you sat, if you shared space with people who were smoking, you were exposed to damaging secondhand smoke.

14 FEBRUARY 2023
Heather Austin speaks at Tobacco Prevention Day at the Capitol.

Now, we have a new threat. The tobacco industry is trying to turn back the clock and undercut the very law more than 2/3 of North Dakota voters put in place. HB 1229 before the North Dakota legislature this session seeks to create a “cigar bar and lounge exemption” to North Dakota’s smokefree air law. North Dakotans deserve to breathe clean air not tainted by secondhand smoke from cigarettes and cigars, or by vapors and aerosols from electronic products. There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. We need more people to tell their lawmakers no to this bill. If it passes and is signed into law, the state will suffer a massive public health setback.

What’s more concerning are the lies and mischaracterizations that cigar smoking is “refined, or cool, or normal.” None of these things are true. The ramifications of bringing smoking back indoors will be felt by those who work in these establishments, those who share walls with these buildings and even by those who patronize them. Again, there is no safe level of secondhand smoke.

There are assurances from supporters that this bill is an

extremely small carveout for a very select clientele, and kids won’t be able to access it. There is no way to guarantee that claim. We can’t normalize smoking in public as a social activity without health consequences. Supporters say young people don’t use cigars in high numbers. That’s because of decades of dedicated work by public health officials teaching the dangers of tobacco products. TFND, along with public and private sector partnerships, sponsors numerous youth focused events including our Youth Action Summits and Tobacco Prevention Day at the Capitol to teach kids the importance of advocacy and outreach when dealing with tobacco issues. We also offer college scholarships annually through a video essay contest, allowing kids to research and tell us their feelings about tobacco products. At the end of the day, we are trying to prevent tobacco addiction, not enable it.

And it’s not just cigars we are worrying about. Seeing all types of tobacco products can lead kids to experimenting with them. The Surgeon General declared youth vaping an epidemic in 2018 due to the meteoric rise in youth usage. Congress passed a federal law in

2019 raising the purchasing age of all tobacco products to 21, the same as alcohol, and in 2021 North Dakota ratified it as state law. Even as cigarette use falls, data from the 2021 North Dakota Youth Risk Behavior Survey shows 23 percent of kids are still experimenting with tobacco products. Tobacco is tobacco is tobacco. None of these products are safe and they shouldn’t be glorified or glamorized. Tobacco products remain the greatest preventable public health risk to our kids.

In answer, TFND is taking the lead in increasing cessation services to young people. In April of 2022, in partnership with Truth Initiative, TFND launched "This Is Quitting." North Dakota is just one of a handful of states offering this program, helping lead the way as an influencer in combatting nicotine and vaping in teenagers and young adults. The text-to-quit resource is free and confidential and is for people aged 13-24 and is proven to be more effective than quitting alone. Spearheading the campaign and here to provide more insight on the mission of TFND and its impact on the workplace is TFND's Executive Director Heather Austin.

An Eye-Opening Q&A with Heather Austin

This is Quitting: What's your mission, and how does it apply to workplaces in North Dakota?

This Is Quitting is a tremendous resource for young people ages 13-24 to quit vaping. This program is specifically tailored for an age group that is often forgotten about when it comes to cessation services. Because of this, they’ve been targeted by the tobacco industry as new customers for electronic products. North Dakota, and the country as a whole, had achieved dramatic decreases in smoking rates since the late 1990s. As new vaping and electronic products have hit the market at a lightning pace, nearly 20 years' worth of public health work has been undone as a new generation becomes addicted to nicotine. This program is one tool we have to help end the youth vaping epidemic.

How is TFND going to help shift the trend of tobacco use in our state and help kickstart that influence on neighboring states?

Kids are unfortunately exposed to tobacco products very early in life, whether through family members and friends, or through seeing product use on TV and social media, or through sales displays at the stores they visit. But they have not necessarily had the same exposure to helpful resources or support systems for fighting nicotine dependence. By connecting young people to this resource using technology

they already embrace, This Is Quitting helps level the playing field against the tobacco industry, showing kids a life without nicotine is not only better, but possible.

Your target audience is everyone but ESPECIALLY the young people, teens and young adults. Why?

TFND has dedicated much of its 35+ year existence trying to keep youth from ever picking up any tobacco products. Nicotine literally rewires the brain and lights up the same reward pathway receptors and areas of the brain as cocaine and heroin. CDC data shows nearly 90% of people who become daily addicted users of cigarettes start before age 18. (which is very problematic

since you have to be 21 to purchase tobacco) and 99 percent of people start before the age of 26. If we can keep people tobacco free until age 26, the chances they never pick up tobacco products increase exponentially.

How does your work at TFND impact workplaces in North Dakota?

Every business is concerned about rising healthcare costs and finding reliable employees—tobacco use makes each of these harder. A landmark study in 2014 showed that people who smoked cigarettes cost a business roughly $6,000 in lost productivity and increased health insurance costs. That’s per employee! Another study published in 2022 estimated e-cigarette users spend an additional $2,000 a year

utilizing healthcare services. This is the first time we've ever been able to put a number to the damage of electronic nicotine products to businesses. These metrics, compounded with hiring difficulties for all business sectors are putting businesses in tough spots. The bottom line is having a healthy workforce, which is vital to business success.

What messages are resonating with people?

One of the key things to understand for anyone trying to quit tobacco products is that Every. Quit. Counts. On average it can take up to a dozen attempts to quit using tobacco products long-term. A slip-up doesn’t mean you failed. Keep persevering!

4 Ways YOU Can Help

We need people to get involved. Joining with TFND, interacting with us, interacting with policymakers, becoming a spokesperson in your community, leading youth education action projects and simply creating awareness about these issues is vital to our success. Generational problems require generational fixes. Eliminating tobacco addiction will take time, effort and cooperation from many different parties. We need people to continue to engage with TFND and become partners so we can end the cycle of tobacco and nicotine dependence.

1

Become a member of TFND or your local Tobacco Free Coalition or Healthy Community Coalition if your area has one.

Talk to the young people in your life to make sure they are aware of the dangers and can be prepared to make the important choice to stay nicotine and tobacco-free.

Talk to policymakers and legislators about enacting and preserving CDC evidence-based best practice tobacco prevention policy.

Share education and messaging about the dangers or tobacco or about the new quitting resources in your community, schools and groups.

MEGHAN KARCH

CAPITAL CREDIT UNION SENIOR ACCOUNTANT

Q&A WITH MEGHAN KARCH

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

I have worked at Capital Credit Union (CCU) for 13.5 years and held several positions including teller, help desk representative, call center representative and loan clerk. I have been in the accounting department for just over eight years. I've been married to my husband, Justin, for just over 9 years, and we've known each other for 13 years. We have a senior cat named Cora who is coming up on her 13th birthday.

HOW DO YOU BELIEVE THAT BEING IN THE YPN HAS GIVEN YOU AN ADVANTAGE SINCE JOINING?

I've been a member of the YPN since Q3 of 2016. I joined when a co-worker and friend suggested that I should. I've really enjoyed the events that the YPN has to offer and I’ve learned a lot. ‘Failing Successfully’ is the one event that puts things into perspective when you hear about tales of struggle, but they still come out on the other side and are better than ever. It's inspiring.

22 FEBRUARY 2023

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2023?

To thrive instead of just surviving. My department has been through the wringer for the last several years and I'm hoping for a stress-free (ha) year.

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU'VE LEARNED IN 2022?

That you should do what you love, both personally and professionally. Personally, I love to read. I'd gotten away from that and have given myself a reading challenge in January. I'm aiming to read 75 books by the end of the year, which still blows my mind.

If you told me in January that I could read 10+ books in a month, I would have laughed. But it's gotten me off of social media, away from the TV and sharpened my mind, which I have loved. I'm in a bit of a transitional period at work, so I'm hoping once the dust settles, I can work on making my position something that I love professionally.

WILL YOU BE MAKING ANY MAJOR BUSINESS CHANGES IN 2023?

Not necessarily, as I'm still learning my role. I accepted a promotion in September of 2021 but haven't had the chance to fully transition with turnover and new hires in our department. I'm excited to not straddle two positions.

WILL YOU BE INTEGRATING ANY NEW SOFTWARE INTO YOUR BUSINESS LIFE IN 2023?

Actually, yes. We are getting new payroll software in 2023 and while

change is hard, we are excited for what is hopefully an easier process for accounting and human resources.

HAVE ANY MENTORS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL SO FAR IN YOUR BUSINESS CAREER?

My boss, Kyla, has been tremendous. She is a rehire at CCU but started in the accounting department around eight months before I did. We have been through a lot and are the last two remaining of the original department that was there when I started. She is empathetic, knowledgeable, kind, understanding and so much more. I'm lucky to work with her.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST HOPE FOR 2023?

I'm hoping for it to be a good year. I think that ever since 2020, everyone has been struggling to get back to normal. 2022 wasn't a bad year, but I'm not sure it was good either. My hope is that good people stand up and make a difference, whether it's in a big way or a small way.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY IN BUSINESS FROM 2022?

The Chamber brought back ‘20 Under 40’ and a few people that I know were featured. I always like to see people that deserve to be recognized get their moment.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SO FAR? HOW DO

YOU PLAN ON TOPPING THAT IN 2023?

I think that going back to college to earn my Accounting and HR

Management degrees while working full-time was definitely one of my biggest accomplishments. It was seven years after I initially graduated college and spurred on by my interview for Accounting Specialist at CCU. Since then, I try to do one thing out of my comfort zone each year.

It's hard and I don't always enjoy it, but it has also been rewarding. Those things have spanned from co-teaching Junior Achievement to being a board to volunteering in the community. I haven't thought too hard about what I will try in 2023, but hopefully, it will be great and fulfilling.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU THINK THE BISMARCKMANDAN COMMUNITY COULD IMPROVE UPON?

I love this community and I don't find a lot wrong with it. I think Mandan's addition of the Lights on Main was great for 2022. Both downtowns are bustling and new businesses pop up here and there. I love to support the locals, and this is a great community to do so.

TRAVIS VATNSDAL

NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL FINANCIAL ADVISOR

Q&A WITH TRAVIS VATNSDAL

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

Personally, I love to learn, especially about all sports (SKOL!), meet new people, board games, have deep conversations with people (more than, “What’s up?” or “How are you?”), outdoor activities and get a good sweat in every day! Professionally, I’ve heard too many horror stories of what subpar financial advising can do to a family.

My goal is to educate the public more on what financial planning should look like so they can live their lives without worrying about finances all of the time. I strive to relieve people of all financial stress and put together a unique, comprehensive, personal financial plan for all my clients so they are aware of where they currently stand (in all aspects of their financial lives, not just with what we can personally help with), what risks their plans face and how to reach all of their life goals.

HOW DO YOU BELIEVE THAT BEING IN THE YPN HAS GIVEN YOU AN ADVANTAGE SINCE JOINING?

YPN is such an amazing organization that I believe that every young professional in the Bismarck-Mandan area should be a part of. First off, it’s a great way to get involved in the community and give back to those who don’t know where to start. Second, it’s a learning experience a lot of the time.

It’s great whether you are meeting business owners around the city and hearing their stories, going to the book club and having high-level discussions about what we read or listening to other speakers they bring in to push/ motivate you to be your best in business and life. Lastly, it’s great for meeting new friends and getting more connected in the Bis-Man area.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2023?

I plan to learn more, travel more, give back more and get more involved.

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU'VE LEARNED IN 2022?

On average, 80% of thoughts you have every day are negative. Surround yourself with motivation and positivity because life is hard!

WILL YOU BE MAKING ANY MAJOR BUSINESS CHANGES IN 2023?

I will be becoming a retirement income specialist.

WILL YOU BE INTEGRATING ANY NEW SOFTWARE INTO YOUR BUSINESS LIFE IN 2023?

Yes, we have brand new, updated planning software that makes putting together a comprehensive plan easier than ever!

HAVE ANY MENTORS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL SO FAR IN YOUR BUSINESS CAREER?

Yes, too many to count honestly. The best thing about Northwestern Mutual is that they let me run my business the way I want it, but we aren’t in competition with each other. This means whenever I run into something I haven’t before, I have access to a fast network of advisors with a ton of experience to learn from and ask questions.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU THINK THE BISMARCKMANDAN COMMUNITY COULD IMPROVE UPON?

I believe that we should utilize the river more! Also, we should push for more community involvement and big events that bring people together!

DENIZEN PARTNERS COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

Q&A WITH KATHRYN SPILMAN

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

I am an extrovert to the MAX. I enjoy gathering people and feeding off other people’s energy. In my spare time, I enjoy volunteering across town, spoiling my chickens and hosting friends and family.

HOW DO YOU BELIEVE THAT BEING IN THE YPN HAS GIVEN YOU AN ADVANTAGE SINCE JOINING?

YPN has forced me to be better at communicating with a variety of personality types, which has led to many conversations about growth.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2023?

To learn as much as I can, work as hard as I can and maintain a healthy “me” while doing it!

32 FEBRUARY 2023

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU'VE LEARNED IN 2022?

No matter how far an individual brings your name down; your professional morale is what will keep you moving forward.

WILL YOU BE MAKING ANY MAJOR CHANGES TO YOUR BUSINESS OR HOW YOU GO ABOUT YOUR JOB IN 2023?

Yes, just jumping into a new role. It’s exciting and complicated, although it’s high-energy constantly. I enjoy collaborating with other local business owners. At the same time giving individuals a chance to experience what our flourishing community has to offer!

WILL YOU BE INTEGRATING ANY NEW SOFTWARE INTO YOUR BUSINESS LIFE IN 2023?

We’ll be integrating many new software platforms in 2023, including TLOxp, Tippy, Buffer, Apollo.io and maybe a couple more. We’re constantly growing, and with growth, comes improved software.

HAVE ANY MENTORS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL SO FAR IN YOUR BUSINESS CAREER?

My brother, Jordan Rohrich. He is the most humble individual that I know and look up to. He provides excellent care to his patients while having an entrepreneurial character. His love for his home life also inspires me!

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST HOPE FOR 2023?

I hope to build memorable relationships with the Trestle tenants and be the best point of contact a tenant has ever had.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SO FAR? HOW DO YOU PLAN ON TOPPING THAT IN 2023?

Receiving the Crystal Reid Award through the YPN. Not wanting to top that recognition, my next accomplishment would be to gather various YP networks across the state together in one room.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU THINK THE BISMARCKMANDAN COMMUNITY COULD IMPROVE UPON?

To support one another’s businesses. No one can choose what side of the river they are born on. It doesn’t matter. It’s a body of water with a current. Our community is ONE; we should treat ourselves and our businesses that way.

JAKE ADDUCCI

NATIONAL INFORMATION SOLUTIONS COOPERATIVE (NISC) PROGRAMMING TEAM LEAD

Q&A WITH JAKE ADDUCCI

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

I was born and raised in Bismarck, ND. Back in high school, I attended a career development course that allowed me to job shadow various businesses around Bismarck and Mandan. That is where I first learned about NISC and took a further interest in software development. I attended NDSU where I got my degree in computer science and statistics. During my junior year, I worked as an intern at NISC.

After graduation, I started working full-time at NISC as a software developer. I took an education assistance opportunity provided by NISC to further my professional development and received my MBA at the University of Mary. I recently became a programming team lead, where I manage a team of software developers. NISC as an organization has played a vital role in my career development and I am proud to work there with other exceptional individuals.

34 FEBRUARY 2023

HOW DO YOU BELIEVE THAT BEING IN THE YPN HAS GIVEN YOU AN ADVANTAGE SINCE JOINING?

The YPN is a great opportunity to branch out and meet other professionals in the Bismarck-Mandan area. It allows for those with similar ambitions to share in those goals and help build each other up.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2023?

My goals for 2023 are to continue coaching and mentoring others on my team and in my circles whenever possible. I will continue to learn new technologies and build upon my existing skill set. I will focus on pushing myself past what I was before.

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU'VE LEARNED IN 2022?

Some of the most important things I’ve learned are to stand up straight and walk with purpose. Also, never stop learning and never give up.

WILL YOU BE MAKING ANY MAJOR BUSINESS CHANGES IN 2023?

I will keep pushing myself, while also making sure to rely on others around me for their support and guidance.

WILL YOU BE INTEGRATING ANY NEW SOFTWARE INTO YOUR BUSINESS LIFE IN 2023?

We've recently started looking toward the software Pluralsight for expanding knowledge across the teams. We’re also looking at better documentation and workflow tools, such as LucidChart.

HAVE ANY MENTORS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL SO FAR IN YOUR BUSINESS CAREER?

My manager, Jay Schlenker, as well as Alexander Dietz, a fellow programming team lead.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST HOPE FOR 2023?

To follow through on the specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely goals that I've set for myself and my team.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY IN BUSINESS FROM 2022?

Our team came together to meet a tough deadline on a project. We reached that goal by working extra hours. It was great to let the team enjoy a shorter workday on the following Friday.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SO FAR? HOW DO YOU PLAN ON TOPPING THAT IN 2023?

Putting a great team of developers together to push one another to be the best that we can be. I want to push us further, either by learning something brand new or creating an area of strength that others can rely on.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU THINK THE BISMARCKMANDAN COMMUNITY COULD IMPROVE UPON?

I would love to see more comradery in our own neighborhoods. Getting to know who is around you today and how you can support each other, as that’s the kind of Bismarck that I grew up with.

GRANT DOCKTER

MOORE ENGINEERING INC. PROJECT ENGINEER

Q&A WITH GRANT DOCKTER

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

I was born and raised in Bismarck, ND before attending UND for four years. After graduation, I returned to Bismarck to begin working as a civil engineer. I immediately wanted to get involved in the community in which I grew up. I joined the YPN to meet like-minded individuals while growing my professional network.

HOW DO YOU BELIEVE THAT BEING IN THE YPN HAS GIVEN YOU AN ADVANTAGE SINCE

JOINING?

The YPN has introduced me to a lot of great people. It has also opened my eyes to the Bismarck-Mandan area and what it has to offer. The YPN does a great job of highlighting the local area and giving people a new perspective on Bismarck-Mandan.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2023?

My plans for 2023 include passing my professional registration test and growing as a professional.

36 FEBRUARY 2023
Photo Provided by Grant Dockter

I want to be more involved in my organizations. For YPN, I want to help grow the Network and see where it can lead.

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU'VE LEARNED IN 2022?

I have learned the power of confidence. Confidence is a huge mind game that can open many doors. Being in YPN, I have been put in public speaking positions that have increased my confidence.

WILL YOU BE MAKING ANY MAJOR BUSINESS CHANGES IN 2023?

I will try and bring that confidence into my workplace. Whether it’s in office meetings or council meetings, I want to be a good public speaker and make a difference in meetings.

WILL YOU BE INTEGRATING ANY NEW SOFTWARE INTO YOUR BUSINESS LIFE IN 2023?

Moore Engineering has been growing in recent years. In order to scale our business, we have been looking into new software in a few different areas.

HAVE ANY MENTORS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL SO FAR IN YOUR BUSINESS CAREER?

I have had great bosses throughout my career. Having good bosses has taught me the power of good leadership.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST HOPE FOR 2023?

My hope for 2023 is for BismarckMandan to be noticed as a great place for young professionals to start their careers.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY IN BUSINESS FROM 2022?

I don't think I could pinpoint one single memory from 2022. My year was filled with many great memories. Whether it was completing meaningful projects, making new connections or spending time with coworkers and solving problems, 2022 was a great year for me professionally.

ARE THERE ANY PODCASTS THAT HAVE BEEN INFLUENTIAL ON YOUR CAREER TO DATE?

On top of YPN, I also coach youth hockey. One podcast I have enjoyed is The Hockey Think Tank Podcast. It’s geared toward hockey coaches, but it talks a lot about leadership and the power of perseverance, which applies to many aspects of my life.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SO FAR? HOW DO YOU PLAN ON TOPPING THAT IN 2023?

My biggest accomplishment so far is the credibility that I have been able to gain with clients. As a young engineer, gaining the trust of clients can be a hard task. In 2023, I plan to obtain my professional engineer's license and become more confident in front of clients and increase my technical knowledge.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU THINK THE BISMARCKMANDAN COMMUNITY COULD IMPROVE UPON?

I would love to see the BismarckMandan community embrace the young professional demographic. With a shortage in the workforce, creating a place that young professionals want to live in can help attract a new talent pool. Fun living areas, downtown attractions and community events are all great examples of opportunities to attract younger talent.

“The Hockey Think Tank Podcast” by Topher Scott and Jeff LoVecchio

JOSH FISHER

NATIONAL INFORMATION SOLUTIONS COOPERATIVE (NISC) SOFTWARE ENGINEER

Q&A WITH JOSH FISHER

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

I’m a software engineer for National Information Solutions Cooperative (NISC) who has been in the industry for almost a decade now. As a tennis enthusiast, I was on the Bismarck-Mandan Tennis Association (BMTA) board from 2016-2022 and served as president from 2020-2022.

Furthermore, I am volunteering on the technical side with the new Mandan Tennis Center. Personally and professionally, I find great reward in the creative and problem-solving processes. However, I think the greatest reward is when undertaking these processes, as difficult as it may be, makes a positive difference.

HOW DO YOU BELIEVE THAT BEING IN THE YPN HAS GIVEN YOU AN ADVANTAGE SINCE JOINING?

It has helped me develop personally and professionally by connecting me with a diverse community of young professionals and a variety of

38 FEBRUARY 2023

opportunities. Despite being nearly a decade into my career and considered accomplished in it when I joined last year, I’ve learned that there is a lot to learn from others and have pushed myself to do a lot of things [including participating in this questionnaire] that I probably would not have done just two years ago.

Also, it is nice to be able to get a good group of young professionals together and have an enjoyable time, whether that's doing a professional development activity or just gathering to have fun, especially being in a job where I am working remotely most of the time.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2023?

I plan to continue to push myself to learn and meet my goals, but also take time to appreciate what I have done in the first decade of my career.

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU'VE LEARNED IN 2022?

One of the most difficult parts of success is knowing when it is time to move on from a project or something you are involved with. The long-term success of these projects is often bigger than you or any one person.

WILL YOU BE MAKING ANY MAJOR CHANGES TO YOUR BUSINESS OR HOW YOU GO ABOUT YOUR JOB IN 2023?

I have been involved in a lot of things over the last few years, and while it ultimately was for the better, this year I realized this is not sustainable long term. I plan to scale back my level of involvement in some things and the

number of projects I am involved in, which I believe will allow me to be more focused and productive in my work.

WILL YOU BE INTEGRATING ANY NEW SOFTWARE INTO YOUR BUSINESS LIFE IN 2023?

There is always something new, being in the software business, but I recently have been using PyCharm by JetBrains to do some Python programming on personal projects and I think it will end up being useful at work as well. I think that I will be learning a lot more new software involved with running the Mandan Tennis Center—court booking, point of sale, live streaming—to help the staff operate efficiently.

HAVE ANY MENTORS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL SO FAR IN YOUR BUSINESS CAREER?

Yes, I will not try to name all of them. However, I think it is worth noting that some of the most influential people in my career are not necessarily in my workplace or part of a traditional mentor-mentee relationship, but I am grateful for the difference they have made in my life.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST HOPE FOR 2023?

I hope that I can find some peace of mind and that I can look back at the first decade of my career and see that my efforts were worthwhile.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY IN BUSINESS FROM 2022?

I faced a rather difficult technical issue not entirely under my control that

went on from March to November and continued delaying introducing some important changes into products relying on this component. I spent many hours trying to understand the issue and communicating it with others who had more control over fixing it but had virtually given up on it by September.

In November, I chose to learn about new technology as part of an organizational initiative to spend 10 percent of my work hours on research and exploration of things not necessarily related to one's main work. After learning about it, I decided to revisit the original problem and apply what I learned. After about a week, I had a solution that turned out to not only avoid the issue out of our control, but also was a significant improvement over what had been used for almost 15 years.

ARE THERE ANY PODCASTS THAT HAVE BEEN INFLUENTIAL ON YOUR CAREER TO DATE?

Alongside these books, and a podcast, the story of Rareware in the 1990s has also been influential on my career.

COURTNEY HAMILTON

BISMARCK TITLE COMPANY CLOSING OFFICER

Q&A WITH COURTNEY HAMILTON

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

A little about me, I grew up in Chestnut Hill, a suburb of Philadelphia and attended Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. For college, I attended the University of Miami, played squash there and lived in South Miami until moving up to Mandan in January 2021. I was then hired at Bismarck Title Company and joined the YPN.

Furthermore, I was elected to the BisMarket board as a member and Secretary, got accepted for the Leadership Bismarck Mandan Class of 2023 and recently joined the Bismarck Dollars for Scholars Board. Some of my hobbies include reading, racquet sports, board games and learning about other cultures, especially through cuisine.

40 FEBRUARY 2023

HOW DO YOU BELIEVE THAT BEING IN THE YPN HAS GIVEN YOU AN ADVANTAGE SINCE JOINING?

Bismarck-Mandan YPN was such a crucial place for me to start building a community in this area. I’ve gotten to know great people who are in a similar stage of life and we get to bounce ideas off each other. The events that YPN puts on have taken me all over town; I’ve gotten to know this area far better than I might have on my own and found some of my favorite go-to spots along the way. .

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2023?

My plans for 2023 are to stay active! Body, mind and career. I love getting to explore a new part of the country through hiking, paddling and road trips. I’m always looking to learn and grow. My favorite thing is to find people who are passionate about something that I know nothing about. I love to learn about their area of knowledge and expertise from them.

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU'VE LEARNED IN 2022?

The most important lesson I learned in 2022 is about trust and belief. I was fortunate enough this year to be promoted to a new position. Change can be exciting but also nerve-wracking! I needed to trust in the skills I had gathered so far, as well as my team to continue to help me when I got stuck. The courage to ask

questions is vital and it’s something I’ve called on a lot this year. Progress can be hard to see and feel on a daily basis but that belief that I was growing kept me going through difficult moments.

WILL YOU BE MAKING ANY MAJOR CHANGES TO YOUR BUSINESS OR HOW YOU GO ABOUT YOUR JOB IN 2023?

For the real estate world, 2023 requires a shift from everyone after the wild booming markets of the last couple of years. Only having started in 2021, I’m excited to grow and expand both myself and Bismarck Title in a slower market than we’ve seen. I want to be here for the next generation of home buyers and business owners in their pursuit of real estate acquisition and sales. I’m always hungry to expand my skill set to exceed expectations for the closing experiences for our current and emergent members and leaders of the community.

WILL YOU BE INTEGRATING ANY NEW SOFTWARE INTO YOUR BUSINESS LIFE IN 2023?

Real estate transactions have seen a huge upward tick in fraud activity. At Bismarck Title, we stay vigilant about our cyber security. We are constantly updating our cyber software and best practices to stay ahead of fraudsters and protect our clients.

It’s been exciting to see the legislation and innovation in and around remote closing, spurred on by the pandemic.

We have a current platform to do remote online notarization and closing but I’m always reading about upgrades and updates that will enhance this technology. Maybe 2023 will see our perfect software match for online closings!

HAVE ANY MENTORS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL SO FAR IN YOUR BUSINESS CAREER?

I’m very fortunate to have a number of people I count as mentors in my workplace. We all work well together across our different jobs and I look forward to continuing to learn from them.

Another great place I’ve found mentors is the peer mentorship found in the YPN. Particularly during book club, I have received so much guidance on how to handle complex issues, both personally and professionally.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST HOPE FOR 2023?

Every year, the answer for my biggest hope is health, happiness and prosperity for myself and my loved ones, whatever that may look like!

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY IN BUSINESS FROM 2022?

My favorite memory was my first closing that I conducted entirely on my own!

BISMANINC.COM 41

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SO FAR? HOW DO YOU PLAN ON TOPPING THAT IN 2023?

Working at Bismarck Title Company has provided me the unique opportunity to work my way up from Receptionist to Closing Officer in a very short amount of time. This is a testament to my coworkers who have taught and guided me. On my first day, I couldn’t have told you what title insurance was. I don’t have plans to top this because it’s so important and deserves its place as a continued top accomplishment for me. So this year, I look forward to stepping my game up even more as a Closer.

Outside of my career, I look forward to growing BisMarket! Having this market (Saturdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June-October on Sweet Ave next to Kiwanis park) as a place of gathering for the community means so much to me. It’s a place to celebrate the growers and makers and what these amazing folks provide on

a local level and showcase the best of what Bismarck and Mandan have to offer.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU THINK THE BISMARCKMANDAN COMMUNITY COULD IMPROVE UPON?

Moving to the Bismarck-Mandan area gave me a renewed appreciation for the strength of a community that believes in and bets on its own. It shows its honor and integrity to have a network of individuals and businesses working their hardest to see their city and fellow citizens grow and thrive.

But let’s talk about that immense growth, it’s not slowing down any time soon! It’s great to be where we are but because of how well the current ways have worked up to this point, there can be a reticence to look critically at the status quo, moving forward and possible change. I believe we must look at growth and the infrastructure

INFLUENTIAL BOOKS

to maintain it as an opportunity to learn, to fail and to find better, creative, dynamic solutions that allow for continuous learning and failure. Let’s look hard and discover what it is we aren’t staying vigilant on. If something is working, why is it working? Can we replicate that in areas that aren’t working as well?

ASHLEY WOOLEDGE

DAKOTA PRINTING AND EMBROIDERY PROMO PRINCESS— AKA ACCOUNT MANAGER

Q&A WITH ASHLEY WOODLEDGE

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

I have lived in Bismarck all but three months of my life working mostly in hospitality and customer service. I’ve always loved to stay busy with multiple jobs and activities at any given time.

My love for the print industry started with my first job at the Bismarck Tribune—writing at 14 and working there at 16. I stayed there for ten years, but I never knew what I really wanted to be "when I grew up." I had the desire to be creative and work with a good group of people. Beyond that, I didn't know where that would lead me.

BISMANINC.COM 43

INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIPS FOR EMPLOYEES

If your company or organization is a BismarckMandan Chamber of Commerce member, your employees are eligible for a $35 per year membership to the Young Professionals Network. Non-chamber member fee is $50 per year.

Jane Halverson, the owner of Dakota Promotions, gave me an opportunity to put that creativity to use as a sales and production specialist, and I remained with that company for nearly six years. It put into play a lot of the tools I had been given throughout all my other jobs and it seemed like the perfect fit for what I wanted for a career.

This past fall, I got a push to go outside of my comfort zone and started with a new company. I'm very excited to see how this company will grow and can't wait to run alongside this team!

HOW DO YOU BELIEVE THAT BEING IN THE YPN HAS GIVEN YOU AN ADVANTAGE SINCE JOINING?

In the past year, I've invested in myself personally and professionally around the community and realized that I should have been doing that a lot sooner! I jumped into the YPN in January of 2022 and joined the board shortly after. I have met amazing people, been able to take part in service projects and have been able to network with other like-minded young professionals.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2023?

With YPN, I hope we gain new members, have kick *butt* events and make memories.

Personally, I want to continue to grow in having a work-life balance.

Professionally, I know that we are going to have a great 2023. Dakota Printing and Embroidery (DPE) is less than a year old. Some of our staff are seasoned pros and others had never been in this industry. We are excited to bring jobs to the community, awesome merchandise to our customers and some of the greatestlooking apparel to businesses and schools!

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU'VE LEARNED IN 2022?

I am worth it! Had I not joined the YPN and attended a leadership course through the Women's Business Center, I know that I still wouldn't be as trusting in myself as much as I have. I had some major losses personally this year. I know that I have an amazing support group of family and friends who will be there to help me land on my feet if I do fall—but I can take those risks and attempt to jump into the unknown.

WILL YOU BE MAKING ANY MAJOR BUSINESS CHANGES IN 2023?

My major change happened in 2022, but it will roll into 2023. I am excited to work for the new ownership at Dakota Printing and Embroidery, as they lead with the intent to create jobs and give back to the community. Working for a company that makes the employees feel appreciated, supports a work-life balance and understands that families have to come first is something that is very important to me.

HAVE ANY MENTORS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL SO FAR IN YOUR BUSINESS CAREER?

I truly believe every person I have worked with or have worked for has helped form me into who I am today. I take the things some do that I appreciate and try to integrate them into my life. I take the things others do that I didn't like and try to avoid doing so if at all possible.

I can't possibly list all of the mentors I've had, but I think a manager that I once had at Starbucks was probably the biggest influence on who I am today in my career. She showed me that it was possible to love co-workers even if we didn't get along. She taught me to show up and work hard, even

if I knew that staying there was not my end game. She was a leader who knew our personal lives and wanted us to do the best we could professionally. My motto tends to be "Be a Bitsy." I want to be that kind of co-worker/manager/friend that people remember with a smile.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST HOPE FOR 2023?

I hope that the YPN as a group is able to celebrate successes and lift each other up when those successes don't happen. I also hope to hit the ground running in 2023 with Dakota Printing and Embroidery.

The Dakota Printing and Embroidery team hasn't been able to trailblaze yet, as the new owners just took over in April. It's a completely blank canvas, and I know that whatever we put into the year, we will be able to get even more back out of it.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY IN BUSINESS FROM 2022?

There were so many great merch projects I was a part of this year! I joke that I am blessed to see my hard work "out in the wild." I love getting to drive downtown and see the Bismarck 150-Year banners or being handed a

challenge coin that we did for them. I love going to restaurants and seeing the apparel that I helped them pick out.

I love seeing businesses completely redoing their logos. I love seeing pictures of my friends' kids on social media playing basketball in warmups that we did. I get the opportunity to see start-up businesses bring in a logo idea and we create for them something better than they expected.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SO FAR? HOW DO YOU PLAN ON TOPPING THAT IN 2023?

I was able to land a couple of larger regionwide nationwide clients in 2022. My hope for topping that in 2023 is to help the rest of our team get clients they are excited to work with.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU THINK THE BISMARCKMANDAN COMMUNITY COULD IMPROVE UPON?

I think we as a community need to support the locals much more by planning events and supporting them, whether it’s checking out local bands at local breweries, drinking local coffee, eating at locally-owned

restaurants or shopping at these great boutiques. I don't think that the general public knows just how many great things that really happen here.

I know I didn't realize how much Bismarck-Mandan had to offer until I started getting more involved. By joining the YPN, I started to feel connected to the community. I then started attending One Million Cups on Wednesdays, BisMarket and Urban Harvest. I attend Chamber EDC events, and try to hit as many events as I can. If a person starts investing in themselves and their community in this way, the benefits will come!

I grew up in a small town in Southeast North Dakota. I went to college at the University of MinnesotaCrookston and played basketball there. From there, I moved to Apple Valley, MN and worked as a recruiter for a staffing agency for two years. I moved to Lincoln in 2018, bought a house, changed careers and married my husband Caleb, all within 6 months.

We now have a son named Maverick and another baby on the way, in addition to our Golden Retriever puppy named Talley. In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors, golfing, hiking, boating and any kind of sport. HOW DO YOU BELIEVE THAT BEING IN THE YPN HAS GIVEN YOU AN ADVANTAGE SINCE JOINING?

Being in the YPN has allowed me to meet people, build connections and experience events that I otherwise would not have had the opportunity to do. Certain events like ‘Entrepreneurs Among Us’ and ‘Failing Successfully’ have allowed me to hear from business owners and others about how they got started and overcame challenges.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2023?

My plans for 2023 are to live it up and enjoy every moment. I hope to travel somewhere grand once I plan it out.

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU'VE LEARNED IN 2022?

The most important thing I’ve learned in 2022 is the importance of taking care of myself and prioritizing my needs and wants.

WILL YOU BE MAKING ANY MAJOR BUSINESS CHANGES IN 2023?

I anticipate and look forward to changes because my organization was recently acquired by Essentia Health. I envision having more support and better processes in my role.

WILL YOU BE INTEGRATING ANY NEW SOFTWARE INTO YOUR BUSINESS LIFE IN 2023?

My organization will be switching EMR (Electronic Medical Record) Systems next year, so that will be a large undertaking.

HAVE ANY MENTORS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL SO FAR IN YOUR BUSINESS CAREER?

I am looking to find a mentor in 2023.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST HOPE FOR 2023?

My biggest hope for 2023 is to stay healthy after a year filled with many injuries.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SO FAR? HOW DO YOU PLAN ON TOPPING THAT IN 2023?

The largest team accomplishment from 2022 is that one of the clinics at my organization scored tied for best in the nation in delivering primary care. It’ll be tough to top that, but we’ll try.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU THINK THE BISMARCKMANDAN COMMUNITY COULD IMPROVE UPON?

There is a lot, but for starters, the Bismarck-Mandan community could do a better job of creating a culture that values and retains young

professionals. It’s important to create a community that offers opportunities, both professional and recreational, for young professionals to learn, grow and enjoy life.

HEXAHIVE CEO, CHIEF OF CREATIVE

Q&A WITH JADE SCHERR

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

I'm the founder and CEO of HexaHive, a marketing agency that helps companies reach their business goals through strategic marketing. Since 2019, my team and I have been partnering with Midwest companies ranging from billion-dollar businesses to local startups. Year after year, I've tripled the growth of HexaHive by pairing my business sense with my education and prior experience in marketing and graphic design.

No matter what I'm working on, you can often find me sipping a latte. My husband, Tyler, and I have two kids that keep us pretty busy. In the free time I do have, I enjoy playing volleyball, heading to the lake and bow-hunting.

HOW DO YOU BELIEVE THAT BEING IN THE YPN HAS GIVEN YOU AN ADVANTAGE SINCE JOINING?

I love that the YPN treats youthfulness as an advantage and as an opportunity for employers and the community to invest in the upcoming generation. Being around like-minded, career-oriented young professionals has allowed me to build valuable connections that have helped move me forward in my career and in my confidence.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2023?

In 2023, I plan to invest in both myself and my team so that we can grow our profitability and our client base, and continuously elevate what we do as a marketing agency.

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU'VE LEARNED IN 2022?

To focus on the things that have the brightest future ahead and leave behind the things that don't. This has always made sense to me, but I really started to embrace it in 2022 after reading a book that expanded on the concept further.

WILL YOU BE MAKING ANY MAJOR CHANGES TO YOUR BUSINESS OR HOW YOU GO ABOUT YOUR JOB IN 2023?

The biggest change for me in 2023 is that I'll be spending the vast majority of the time working on the business, rather than working in it.

We've grown a lot in the past 2 years, so 2023 is emphasizing fine-tuning roles and what our team looks like before we grow more. We're reducing our billable hours to avoid burn-out and set employees up for success, setting profitability incentives and focusing on training so that we are always doing better and better work for our clients.

HAVE ANY MENTORS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL SO FAR IN YOUR BUSINESS CAREER?

I hired John Meyer as a business coach in late 2022 and he's been a game changer. I always looked up to what

he did with his infographic agency, Lemonly, and how he balances people-focused business with doing stellar work.

podcasts, audiobooks or even social media accounts that help them grow every day.

WHAT IS YOUR

BIGGEST HOPE FOR 2023?

Elevation. It's one of our core values, but it's what we're prioritizing this year—growing and elevating what we do, how we do it and what people know us for.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY IN BUSINESS FROM 2022?

There are so many to choose from! I could go on about proud moments in seeing team members gain confidence, overcome obstacles and more, but one client project comes to mind.

We had a client that switched to us from another agency for an annual campaign they do. We had the same budget, timeline and overall theme that we promoted as the former agency, but with our different approach and a fresh perspective, we were able to land more than 2x the results in every key metric that they were looking for. It was really rewarding to see that the extra effort we put in for clients pays off, especially with such an even comparison.

ARE THERE ANY BOOKS THAT HAVE BEEN INFLUENTIAL ON YOUR CAREER TO DATE?

“The Pumpkin Plan” by Mike Michalowicz. If you have a business, you have to read this book! There are so many others that I could list, but overall I'd just encourage people to continuously learn and look to

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SO FAR? HOW DO YOU PLAN ON TOPPING THAT IN 2023?

I was a shortlisted candidate for Forbes’ North American ‘30 Under 30’ this year. While I didn't get the award, it was an honor to be considered next to some of the most talented entrepreneurs and young professionals in the continent and I learned a lot through the rigorous vetting and interview process.

In 2023, I don't plan on chasing any crazy awards, but I do plan to focus more effort on intentionally investing in myself and my team so that we can continue to grow personally and professionally.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU THINK THE BISMARCKMANDAN COMMUNITY COULD IMPROVE UPON?

I believe that everyone should try new things and embrace failure more!

North Dakota Women’s Business Center Launches New Program for Childcare Providers

North Dakota has a rich collection of womenowned business stories— rural training facilities for ice skaters that inspire Olympic excellence, trucking and distribution companies that ship our agricultural goods, architects whose designs leave a legacy on our prairie, archeologists whose work protects and preserves the history of North Dakota’s Native Nations, and childcare providers who work tirelessly to offer a safe place for children to learn and grow while their parents earn an income. According to the Small Business Administration, nearly 43% of North Dakota businesses are women-owned and each of their stories represents a person striving to create a better life for themselves, their families and their communities.

Throughout 2022, the North Dakota Women’s Business Center’s (NDWBC) board and staff paused its traditional programming to evaluate the direct needs of women business owners like the ones described above to ensure their needs were being met effectively. NDWBC researched its market share, the business climate in North Dakota, conducted listening sessions across the state and collected data. The results indicated women business owners continue to face challenges including limited funding opportunities, social expectations, gender and racial biases, work-life balance, and in some areas, legal inequities and a lack of government support on the local, state and federal levels.

One specific recurring challenge came as no surprise, childcare. Whether the challenge is a childcare provider struggling with workforce shortages, cumbersome regulations and other red tape, or another business owner looking for a provider to care for their kids, the sentiment is the same. There is a lack of accessible and affordable childcare.

NDWBC is working to close that gap through advocacy efforts, strategic partnerships, and by facilitating equitable access to critical resources like funding, business training for childcare providers and long-term business support. Recently, NDWBC proudly partnered with Child Care Aware of North Dakota (CCA) to create an industryspecific program designed to accelerate the growth and development of sustainable, profitable group and center childcare businesses to help increase the availability of services statewide. `

This virtual course is helping women business owners from across the state upskill their business acumen and make connections with other childcare owners on a similar journey. The ten-week Industry Intensive course is derived

52 FEBRUARY 2023

NDWBC is proud to welcome childcare providers from across North Dakota into a new Industry Intensive program designed to accelerate the growth and development of sustainable, profitable group and center childcare businesses to help increase the availability of services statewide.

from a successful initiative formerly known as the Women’s Leadership Program, which helped women in business learn about their leadership options, build confidence and diversify their networks.

The new program, however, will focus on building sustainable business foundations, branding, financial management, recruitment and leading a team with NDWBC’s industry-specific curriculum. NDWBC Executive Director, Christy Dauer, is excited to offer businesswomen this opportunity.

“It’s no surprise North Dakota is experiencing a childcare drought, and the statistics are alarming. Childcare is vital to the success of our state and the vibrancy of our economy. Childcare owners face unique challenges in business and we are thrilled to be in partnership with CCA to collaborate and bring business resources to this group,” Christy said.

Childcare offers a business model with high labor costs and narrow margins,

which makes high-quality and affordable childcare difficult to provide. This concern is a nationwide issue impacting families, communities and the workforce at large. According to CCA’s website, there may be over 120,000 children needing care in North Dakota. Wage earners who cannot find childcare often stay at home. This decision impacts the economy and affects women at a disproportionate rate.

CCA Start-Up and Community Engagement Coordinator Verla Jung shares how this partnership with NDWBC is tackling the issue.

“Child Care Aware of ND was the recipient of a grant from Strengthen ND that awarded the opportunity to pilot a shared services model for childcare programs. One prong of the shared service's pilot is to offer business training and coaching. We are excited... to help build capacity along with building the program’s financial stability,” Verla said.

Building a program exclusively for childcare providers means working to solve the specific needs of professionals in the

business. NDWBC Client Success Director Elizabeth Phares Oren is working toward that end.

"There is power around purpose and support. Bringing these women together to navigate pain points, identify solutions, and plan for the future is an opportunity to not only support them but also impact an industry vital to North Dakota," Elizabeth said.

The pilot program will run from January to March. In addition, the class will feature a two-day financial workshop for the family (in-home) childcare providers in February and March.

NDWBC is proud to be the leading voice, resource, and partner for women business owners. To learn more about the Industry Intensives and other programs, visit ndwbc.com and follow @ndwbc on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

10 Mistakes That Can Kill Your Startup Business Y

You started a business and you feel like you are on top of the world. You are running in a million directions, but this new journey is so much better than your old job! Being you are a new business owner, you may get so busy with all the new tasks that you forget to stop and breathe.

This can cause you to not see the big picture and slip into some mistakes that can kill your startup business. Every startup makes mistakes and since we are human, there is always something to learn or improve on. To achieve success, entrepreneurs should be aware of common challenges and obstacles that could potentially lie ahead so they don’t make the same mistakes that others have already made.

54 FEBRUARY 2023

JulieHinker,Veterans Business Specialist

As our businesses begin to pick up momentum and propel forward, we can become blinded by our successes and growth causing us to run into unsuspected issues. Keep reading to find out exactly where many startup failures begin and how your business can avoid them!

1. Market Problems

A major reason why startups fail is that there is little to no market for the product or service they have created. We must have a compelling value proposition to cause the buyer to fully commit to purchasing. Is your product or service a Vitamin (nice to have) or an Aspirin (must have)?

Additionally, poor market research leads to misunderstanding the target audience, which leaves you with a product that no one wants. It is critical that you create a product that fits into the market, so don’t invest too much time and resources before you are confident that people want whatever it is that you are offering.

2. Not Focusing on Your Main Idea

So… you had a great idea and built a company around it. Now, your mind is wandering and exploring other ideas that might take your company to the next level. STOP! Building a company takes time, money, effort and—focus. If you are one that is

easily distracted or has trouble finishing what you started, your startup might end up in the percentage of startups that didn’t make it to the finish line.

These new ideas that are blinding your main vision could potentially lead to more success; however, do you really have the time, energy and resources you need to invest in it right now? Avoid biting off more than you can chew early in your business start up. There will be plenty of opportunity to expand once your ship is sailing smoothly.

3. Ignoring Branding

If I told you that the best startup idea would fail in today’s market without design and branding at the core of the product, would you believe me? In this fast-paced and ever-changing digital world, entrepreneurs need to consider how design can influence human behavior and how to brand their product to ensure it stands out in the digital space.

Building an authentic brand is not easy, but it is a necessary element for businesses entering this competitive digital market. The best plan of attack is to create a vision for your brand from day one instead of treating it as an afterthought.

4. Hiring the Wrong People

Talent recruitment is the backbone of any business. You could have the best product or service in the world, but if you can’t find the right people to fill positions in marketing, sales, distribution, etc., your business could fail.

Hiring the right people is important for every organization, especially for small businesses and startups with fewer employees. The people you hire will be a significant part of your success. They are either going to push your business forward, or they’re going to bring your company down. Therefore, this is a critical aspect to the success of your business.

A small piece of advice when hiring employees, “choose wisely.” Getting the right employees on board will ensure they will grow with you, contribute to overall success and hopefully reduce the need to hire again and again.

5. Premature Scaling

Premature scaling can be referred to as spending money beyond the essentials of growing the business (e.g., hiring sales personnel, expensive marketing, perfecting the product, leasing offices, etc.) before nailing down the product and market fit. We see a lot of startups dying because even though they are doing good things, they are doing them out of order.

Premature scaling will use up your cash more quickly leaving you with a smaller path to discover that you were wrong and need to readjust. Try to think of it like a baseball game… the old model of entrepreneurship was to throw all your money into

taking one big swing whereas the new model is preserving your cash, so you have as many swings as possible to try and hit a home run.

Although it may sound ideal to move fast and completely dominate an industry, more often than not this leads to an unsustainable pace and ultimately failure. A great way to maintain a healthy pace is by hiring quality staff only as needed.

6. Running Out of Cash

You need money to make money, but more importantly, you need to understand how to manage that money to keep it in the first place. One of the biggest issues that we see startups face is running out of money before they can make any positive strides forward.

Even those that are lucky enough to secure funding can still be confined to a short runway of time before they are needing more to pay their bills. Cash is the lifeblood of your business. If you don’t have enough of it, then your business will slowly fade away. Some say, “Cash is King,” but entrepreneurs should be thinking, “Cash Flow is King.”

7. Failing to Put Together the Right Team

You are the founder, heart and brilliant mind behind your business. Being the jack of all trades might be your title at the beginning of this journey, but you should know it is only a short-term solution. You can only do so much. The truth is you need a team!

56 FEBRUARY 2023

It’s essential that you are selective and strategic about your team. Here are a few tips to help you put together the best team for your startup:

• Hire people that have hard skills and resourcefulness

• Build your team for the long-term company

• Hire individuals that will place your customers front and center

• Know your team member’s ambitions

• Find employees that are hungry for growth and success

8. Not Setting Long-Term Goals

Goals are a vital aspect of keeping your business on track. When businesses don’t set clear goals, the path to the future becomes mudded, making it extremely difficult to stay on track. Setting goals, both long and short, can help you achieve your business goals. Make sure your goals are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-based.

Many startups will often overlook the need for creating longterm goals, but if you want to positively move forward, you need to know where you are going. Plus, you’ll have to be prepared to make fast, yet smart, decisions, and this requires a clear sense of direction that only setting goals can provide.

9. Choosing a Poor Location

Location plays a huge role in the success of a business. Good location decisions can significantly boost a startup’s longterm performance, and poor ones can cost them millions in lost talent, sales and productivity.

Did you conduct the appropriate market research before deciding on a location for your new business? If you didn’t, it might be a good time to head back to the drawing board to make sure the location of your business is conducive to success. Here are six factors to consider when choosing a business location:

• Accessibility • Security • Competition

• Business rates

• Skill base in the area

• Potential for growth

10. Burning Out

Most entrepreneurs and startup founders do not understand the term “work-life balance” because they are so passionate about their idea. Having a non-stop hustle mentality can put you at a higher risk for burnout.

One of the easiest ways to avoid burnout is by increasing your productivity. If you can learn how to become more productive it will give you back a significant amount of your time, reduce stress and help train your brain to only focus on tasks that will lead to business and revenue growth.

While launching your startup or business idea, consider these common factors that can often lead to failure. All these mistakes noted above can be prevented. As an entrepreneur and founder, you may have the perfect product or service, the best employees and all the money you need, but ultimately the success of your startup relies entirely on your perseverance. At the end of the day, there is only one thing that can truly kill your company, and that’s when you decide to give up. Your grit keeps you going to achieve your goals. Stay committed, persevere and never, ever give up!

Great entrepreneurs make things happen and move quickly to seize opportunities.

Do you have a great startup vision or idea? We encourage you to reach out to VBOC of the Dakotas to help you get started today. We provide no-cost business advising, business ownership options, start-up logistics, business plan development, budgeting and financial projections, financing solutions and operating strategies.

“Before I joined Flint Group, I spent seven years at the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce heading up the marketing and communications department,” Klassen said. “It was exciting to be part of growing our community, creating personal connections with the businesses and people that drive our city forward. Now, I’m thrilled to continue that journey by supporting local business women to our business community in addition through Lotus.”

But that’s not all. Klassen is also an Instagram influencer in her “spare” time, sharing the beauty and wonder of the Badlands with nearly 12,000 followers from all over the world.

“I’ve always had a passion for photography and capturing those moments that are important to a mama,” Klassen said. “We’re an outdoor family, and when you’ve got a backdrop like the Badlands, the shots can’t help but look breathtaking. That beauty and what I like to think of as a humorous, unfiltered view of motherhood resonated with other mamas and things just grew from there.”

Mastering the fine art of saying no

Every working parent understands how difficult the work/family balancing act can be. Klassen admits keeping everything running smoothly with a family, a full-time job and a side hustle is challenging. Her passion for what she does keeps her going and helps her prioritize.

“As the kids get into more activities and my professional and personal responsibilities evolve, planning where I spend my time is an absolute,” Klassen said. “I had to start saying no to things that don’t give me energy. That wasn’t easy. I had to train myself to identify what I consider work and what I consider fun. Sometimes they look very similar, but the energy is totally different. For example, camping seems like a lot of work, but, for us, it’s a chance to recharge and reconnect as a family. I wouldn’t give that up for the world. I also have a passion for small businesses and helping others build their brand. Luckily that has been a part of my ‘day job,’ so it doesn’t feel like work.”

Beyond balance—thriving through passion

It’s not just a question of work vs. fun, though. For Klassen, passion is a key ingredient in her personal recipe for success. Whether it’s a brick-and-mortar business or a virtual space,

tapping into what you love and being yourself is key to building a successful brand.

“Loving what you do doesn’t just make the work easier, it makes it more authentic,” she said. “I see every day as an adventure, a chance to bring positivity to every moment. That comes through in my work with clients, my social spaces and my interaction with my family. I didn’t set out to be an influencer—Instagram was just a fun platform to share my special family memories. I wasn’t doing anything I wouldn’t do naturally. But people started taking notice. They started asking questions—where are you? What are you wearing? Suddenly, telling my story became telling the story of North Dakota and this wonderful community.”

Creating a community for professional women on the Western Edge

Klassen credits her supportive communities—both virtual and IRL—with the strength to follow her passion and be her authentic self. She’s also happy to provide that foundation of knowledge and encouragement for others in the Dickinson area.

“My door is always open, so to speak,” she said. “I’m happy to answer questions, discuss plans or just be a cheerleader. This community has so much to offer. I’m excited to help local women make their mark.”

than people to fill them. Despite

involved individual exiting our criminal from our post-secondary education system took jobs today, we would still have thousands of jobs open in our state. With lack of workforce being the number one challenge impacting economic growth in North Dakota, we are helping people around the country discover North Dakota and the quality of life offered here. We’re creating opportunities for students to explore and prepare for jobs. We’re breaking down barriers to promote entrance and movement throughout the workforce.

A key player in developing the state’s workforce strategy is the North Dakota Workforce Development Council (WDC). The WDC’s role is to advise the governor

and the public concerning the nature and extent of the state’s workforce needs and to identify ways to address these needs while maximizing available resources and avoiding unnecessary duplication of effort. In October 2022, the WDC released 10 comprehensive recommendations within the following categories:

• earlier and more diverse career exploration

• addressing the technical skills gap

• removing barriers to employment

• occupational licensure reform

• the recruitment and retention of workers

Several of these recommendations served as the foundation for Governor Doug Burgum’s ND Works Investment Plan which he announced in October at the 2022 Main Street ND Summit. Additionally, while not all of the WDC’s recommendations call for legislative action, seven are included in the 2023-2025 Executive State Budget, four of which are for programs that will be housed within the North Dakota Department of Commerce.

62 FEBRUARY 2023

Commerce’s Workforce Development Division has evolved a lot since the beginning of the 2021-2023 biennium. We left the last legislative session with a couple of small grants for skilled workforce training programs and now, thanks to an appropriation of $20 million of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds by the legislature during the 2021 special session combined with the wise investment of discretionary dollars, we are operating two large grant programs that are impacting every part of the state, with a third grant launching soon. In addition to the grant programs, we also launched a new comprehensive talent attraction initiative that is successfully helping people around the country discover North Dakota and make the move to their new home in our state. Our larger requests for the 20232025 biennium are designed to build on the programs we launched this biennium.

The first grant program, the Regional Workforce Impact Program (RWIP) was launched last spring. A total of $15 million of the allocated ARPA funds were used to implement this new grant program geared at empowering locally-led solutions to workforce challenges that were caused or exacerbated by the pandemic. Unique to most grant programs, RWIP was designed to focus on regional needs rather than an overall statewide approach. Workforce needs vary by region, so a one-sizefits-all approach is unrealistic and would not adequately address challenges in all parts of the state. The RWIP provides a regional funding strategy that supports local workforce initiatives, giving local and regional partners the ability to access funding tailored to their regional needs. To ensure equitable access to RWIP Grant dollars, a portion of funding was reserved for each of the eight planning regions, based on population as provided by the 2020 decennial U.S. Census.

Another unique aspect of RWIP is the application process. Instead of individual entities applying, regions are required

to submit one overall application that encompasses several projects from a variety of eligible entities. Each regional RWIP applicant is required to provide a 25% match of the overall application budget. Due to this unique structure, partners representing rural and urban communities in each region work together to prioritize projects that would have the greatest impact.

Although the RWIP has had challenges, primarily related to limitations within the federal funding source, we’ve seen tremendous success. To date, we have awarded more than $14 million for 58 projects with a few awards still pending. Once these remaining proposals are approved, more than 60 projects will be funded by this grant. Approved projects range from skilled workforce training, career exploration, expansion of career and technical education offerings, affordable housing, talent attraction, child care, and more. Each project is in a different stage, so data related to the impact of these dollars continues to come in; however, within child care alone, we’re supporting 33 facilities that are using its grants to expand capacity by adding a total of 1,590 new child care slots statewide.

The RWIP model has proven to be effective, so our goal next biennium is to expand on it and create more flexibility in how grant funds can be used to foster more creativity and innovation in the projects communities develop. We believe that implementation of the state’s workforce strategy will be stronger if communities are enabled and empowered to develop workforce initiatives that are aligned with the core themes on which the WDC focuses.

The second program we’re facilitating using $3 million of the allocated ARPA funds is the Technical Skills Training Grant. This program is designed to support eligible training providers and employers in their efforts to launch or expand rapid, non-degree reskilling and upskilling programs. All training

programs must mitigate a workforce issue that was created or exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This program has two tracks, each focused on developing or expanding a highly skilled workforce:

Track A reflects the initial intent of this grant program when we first launched it in 2020 and is designed for new and expanding accelerated, non-degree training programs that prepare trainees for new jobs. Applicants in this track are eligible for up to $100,000 with a 1:1 match.

Track B is designed for companies wishing to provide internal upskilling opportunities for their existing staff to promote movement and advancement throughout the organization, create more comprehensive onboarding and new worker training programs or provide safety training for employees. Applicants in this track may be eligible for up to $50,000 with a 1:1 match.

Since its inception, the Technical Skills Training Grant has supported the launch and expansion of programs in health care, energy, transportation and logistics, IT, welding, UAS and more. This biennium alone, we’ve obligated more than $1 million for 20 training programs that are upskilling and reskilling workers across the state. Throughout the grant’s lifetime, we have supported 32 training programs with a total capacity of 797 trainees. It’s important to note that most of the programs we’ve supported using federal dollars are sustainable and will continue to prepare citizens for entrance and movement within the workforce for years to come, thus creating more pathways to employment in our state.

In addition to the grant programs, we also launched Find the Good Life in North Dakota (FTGL), a comprehensive talent attraction initiative that utilizes a software system that allows us to collect information from job seekers, connect them with communities that offer the quality of life they’re looking for and employers in their field. Through this system, we can track their progress as they explore opportunities in North Dakota until the point at which they accept a job here and call North Dakota home. Although many states have marketing campaigns or big incentive programs to attract people, North Dakota is the first state to take this hands-on, innovative approach to help individuals and families actually make the move.

This is being achieved through collaboration with a contractor, Commerce’s Tourism and Marketing Division, Job Service North Dakota and our community champions. Now up to 70, the community champions are volunteers from around the state who are engaging with job seekers to connect them with employers and share information about their communities based on the interests the job seeker has shared with us through our relocation help desk.

Our relocation help desk existed in a less formal capacity before we revived FTGL in June 2022, but we couldn’t have shared this type of information. What we know is that from May 2021 to May 2022, 106 people submitted forms through our relocation help desk and based on self-reporting, which can be spotty, we believe 15 people made the move in that year. Now, in just six months, we’ve grown the number of job seekers interested in North Dakota by 10 times.

Currently, we have more than 1,100 job seekers in our pipeline who have chosen to share with us their names, contact information, industry interest or experience and the activities and amenities that offer the quality of life they’re looking for. More than 300 individuals have asked to connect with a community champion and 10 job seekers and their families have already moved to North Dakota. This number continues to grow with many in the final stages of securing jobs, housing and child care. It’s important to keep in mind that we’re in the early stages of this program we’re building. However, we’re pleased with the trajectory it’s on and we are excited to help more individuals and families find their good life in North Dakota.

More important than these numbers are the stories behind them.

• One individual moved to Minot from Washington in July 2022 before he had a job and was hired within a week of arriving. He’s now working for an IT company.

• Another had been to North Dakota for work and after visiting the eastern side of the state in October with his wife and son, they moved to West Fargo from upstate New York in December 2022.

• Finally, another person moved to Wahpeton from Texas last fall and is working for a manufacturing company. His wife and children will join him after this school year, and we’ll get to help her find a dream job, too.

The list of success stories will continue to grow, especially with the horsepower we plan to put behind this initiative with increased funding. Governor Doug Burgum

recently included $25 million for talent attraction in the 2023-2025 Executive State Budget. These funds will be used for increased marketing strategies and initiatives to help individuals come to our state to explore communities that offer the quality of life they’re looking for and to engage with employers in their industry. Currently, 78% of the job seekers utilizing FTGL have never been to North Dakota, and we know that people are more likely to move to a place they’ve visited.

We have big plans for the next biennium and beyond. As a state, we’re taking calculated risks to try new things to address our state’s workforce needs and multiple agencies are working together to enhance career exploration and work-based learning opportunities, to ensure we have a workforce with the skills our employers need, to remove barriers to employment, to attract people to our state and to keep new and existing North Dakotans here. We hear your cries for help. We also hear the criticisms that “we’re not doing anything.” The reality is that workforce strategies are often a long game, and it may take a while to see the return on investment. We’re planting seeds now that are starting to grow, and their impact will soon be quantifiable. As a state workforce system, we are happy to answer your questions and more than anything, we welcome your ideas and your collaboration.
