A WHAT IS THE MOVIE "INCEPTION" EVEN ABOUT?
nswer: Dreams. Now I will begin my editorial.
This month, we're talking about home upgrades. Now, that might look different depending on who you are, where you live, your household members, or your living situation—but one thing is for certain, we all can dream about it. There's no harm in thinking up the craziest, coolest home upgrade—the challenge comes when you accept that it is, in fact, something you want to do! That's where these featured people come in. We're meeting some of your local designers, makers, creatives,
and doers who work to make the dreams of homeowners in the Red River Valley a reality.
Speaking of reality—it's cold, it's windy, and I don't remember the last time I saw the sun outside for more than a whisper of an hour (it likes to taunt us this time of year). It snows, it freezes, and then it blows into drifts before starting the process over again. The mundanity of the grey sky is no match for the three-times iced-over roads, white residue from the salt brine tracking under your tires, under your feet, dragging into the floor mats of the car. (Can we escape it?) The piles
in the corner of the parking lots from constant snow plowing grow taller and, I don't know about you, but my patience grows shorter. I yearn for fresh air pricking my skin, without it paired with a sharp intake of breath that feels like it's seizing my lungs; a moment to enjoy the sun on my skin without it being followed by a burning sensation from harsh winds littered with tiny ice particles pelting my skin; the opportunity to walk in the front door without tracking in slush or leaving wet boot marks in my wake. I know it sounds dramatic— but the winter does that, makes it all seem dramatic, we must

entertain ourselves somehow, right?
All melodramas aside, it's been a long winter, and while saying I yearn for warmer days might be pointless, it keeps the dream alive. And is that not all we ask for during this time of year? Whether you're dreaming of floating in an in-ground pool in your backyard, an ice-cold drink in hand, or dreaming of how nice it would be to have a warm, crackling fireplace to cozy up next
to—no matter your dream, keep dreaming it. There's no harm in a little escapism in today's world. So, dream big or dream small, just dream often; and

BBears Home Solutions traces its roots back to 1978 when founders Dale and Louvain Boettner moved to Grand Forks, ND, and started Custom Aire, a commercial HVAC company that has continued to thrive over the years. While Custom Aire remains focused on commercial HVAC services, the Boettner family’s commitment to delivering quality HVAC solutions for both businesses and homeowners helped establish them as a leader in the region.
In 2008, the Boettners expanded their reach by creating a sister company, One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, dedicated to providing residential heating and cooling services in Grand Forks and the surrounding areas. Over time, the company grew to include
locations in Fargo, Grand Forks, and Hillsboro, adding offerings like plumbing, fireplace repair and installation, aeroseal duct sealing, and indoor air purifiers.
Recently rebranded as Bears Home Solutions, the company now encompasses a wide range of services and products designed to help families live more comfortable, safe, and healthy lives. Whether repairing a furnace, fixing a pipe, or installing an air purification system, Bears Home Solutions is committed to providing exceptional heating, cooling, and plumbing solutions tailored to meet the unique needs of each home.
"From a 10,000-foot view, Bears Home Solutions is a heating, cooling,
and plumbing company," Owner Eric Boettner said. "However, along with installing furnaces, boilers, air conditioners, water heaters, and fireplaces, we are also a company focused on customer health, whether it be through clean air measured through our Home Air Quality Audits or through clean water for bathing, drinking, or brushing your teeth measured through our Water Quality Audits. We tailor all of our solutions specifically to that client's specific home, their needs, and offer flexible payment options for their budget. We also are in the business of educating our customers to make choices that are best for them, we simply want to provide all of the information because in a lot of cases, we find people haven't been fully informed on what their options are."
HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
I had a different path than most in the HVAC and plumbing industry. I grew up around it with my father running the company but I was interested in forging my own path and didn't see myself working in the industry. However, after graduating with my accounting degree, and MBA, and spending 10 years in the banking industry, I started to re-consider the opportunities the HVAC industry provided as well as the value I could bring to the business given my education and experience in finance and accounting. A good portion of owners in the HVAC and plumbing industry started in the business working for a company and one day decided to go out on their own. I felt that, given my background, I would be able to bring a unique skill set and perspective. All that being said, the thing I love about this industry is that I have a new experience or learn something different every single day. There's so much I don't know and that excites me to push forward and get better every single day. One of our company's core values is 'ambition' and I'd say that represents and exemplifies the outstanding team we have.
I feel I am incredibly lucky to have grown up with the parents I have and the experiences I've been through. My grandfather, Dale Boettner, started this business in 1978, and my father, Scott Boettner, and uncle, Randy Boettner, bought the business from him in the 90s so I am the third generation—which I take a lot of pride in. They also added Darin Gador to the ownership team, our current general manager, who has been with the business for 40 years and has forgotten more about HVAC than I'll ever know. It is not lost on me how fortunate I am to have the privilege to take over a company that's been around for 47 years and continue to grow and improve it while absorbing all of their wisdom. I feel like every day I have to prove that I deserve the opportunity and that's one of my main driving forces.
WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT YOUR WORK?
There's so much room to improve and I have a direct impact on how successful we are as a company. If we screw up or something doesn't

work, that falls on leadership and management and I thrive on that level of accountability. We also have opportunities to literally change the lives of the people who work for us by providing them with a career path based on their desires, whether it be to be a manager, the best technician they can be in a leadership role, or even if they'd like to start their own business one day. The same can be said for the customers we serve. A lot of times we get calls from customers who have never experienced an issue with their furnace or air conditioner and are at the worst possible time when it's either very hot or cold. This provides us with a great opportunity to put that customer at ease by truly listening to what their concerns are and helping them through the process while allaying some fears about time (how long until it can be fixed), money (how much is it), and who we are (how can I trust you).

Outside of work, I'm passionate about my family first and foremost. Spending time with them at home or the family lake place is something I really enjoy. I will always say the two girls that my wife and I have are the greatest thing I have ever done and will ever do in my lifetime.

I've been married to my incredible wife, Khonsavanh, for 10 years in June and we have two amazing daughters, Eleanor (7) and Penelope (1). My wife is the most important person in allowing me to put in the work required to accomplish the goals I'm passionate about. She does all of this while somehow finding the time to accomplish goals she is passionate about within real estate as a realtor and an investor. She does a lot of her own work in preparing houses to either flip or prepare to be rented out which surprises a lot of people. She's very talented at what she does. We like to travel as time allows too. We always enjoy new experiences and going to different places around the world to take in different cultures.
Also, when I have time, I really enjoy getting the time to go out and golf. I've played since I was 10 years old and it's always been a big part of my life.

Alma TED
The Revolutionary Approach to Hair Restoration Available at Everest Regenerative Medicine
For those grappling with hair thinning or hair loss, the quest for an effective and noninvasive treatment can feel endless. Alma TED, a cutting-edge innovation in hair restoration technology, offers a promising solution.
With the Alma Ted system not widely available, the team at Everest is thrilled to provide this advanced hair restoration technology to the Fargo area.
Understanding Alma TED
The TED in Alma TED stands for "Trans Epidermal Delivery," and is a system designed to stimulate natural hair growth. Unlike traditional hair restoration methods that rely on needles or surgical intervention, Alma TED is a non-invasive and pain-free procedure. To achieve this, the technology uses ultrasonic sound waves and air pressure to deliver active hair growth
serums into the scalp—without the need for needles. The unique mechanism of action focuses on three critical aspects:
1. Stimulation of Hair Follicles: By using ultrasonic energy, Alma TED creates an optimal environment for hair follicles to thrive. The sound waves stimulate scalp tissue to increase blood flow and nutrient delivery to hair roots.
2. Enhanced Delivery System: The transdermal system penetrates the hair growth serums deeply into the scalp.
3. Comfort and Convenience: With no downtime, no pain, and no needles, Alma TED provides a seamless experience for patients looking to improve their hair health.
Clinical studies and testimonials have shown Alma TED effective in addressing hair thinning, shedding, and even early-stage balding. Most patients report noticeable improvements in hair density and texture within weeks of starting the treatment.

"It's a non-invasive, non-painful treatment with no downtime," Everest Provider Crystal Amundson said. "It's for people with no thinning hair who just want thicker hair, people who want less shedding hair, or those experiencing thinning and looking to regain some fullness. It can even help solidify the root system if you're losing hair or speed up growth after a hair transplant to make it come in quicker and thicker. Plus, it's versatile—you can use it on the face to address issues like thinning beards or patchy facial hair. It can even help restore gray hair closer to its original color."
The Science Behind the Technology
The ultrasonic waves emitted by Alma TED create microchannels in the scalp, which serve as pathways for the hair growth serums to reach the follicular cells. These serums are formulated with potent growth factors, peptides, and amino acids that rejuvenate

dormant follicles, stimulate hair production, and strengthen existing strands.
Filling the Gap in Hair Restoration
Alma TED bridges significant gaps in the hair treatment realm. It’s ideal for individuals with varying needs: those experiencing thinning or shedding, individuals looking to accelerate growth after a transplant, or even those with healthy hair who want to enhance thickness and reduce shedding.

How Evolution Construction Came to Be
Founded in November 2020, Evolution Construction is the culmination of decades of industry experience and a passion for delivering exceptional, fully customized, high-end construction projects.
Owner and Founder Ryan Weigel grew up immersed in the world of custom homebuilding, working alongside his father from the age of 10 during summers and college breaks. This hands-on upbringing shaped his attention to detail and passion for quality craftsmanship.
After earning a degree in business administration, Ryan spent 19 years at Microsoft, the last 5 of which, he was a project manager.
When a company-wide layoff forced a career pivot, he set out to seamlessly combine his technical and organizational skills with his construction background to create Evolution Construction.
What does Evolution Construction do?
With a commitment to quality, Ryan spent months carefully vetting subcontractors because he wanted the best for his projects. He also wanted to form lasting relationships with these subcontractors because he didn't want to skimp on quality or reliability, meaning he uses the same subcontractors that he knows can deliver every time.
The company initially carved out a niche in basement finishing, something they're still exceptionally skilled at. However, they have expanded their services to offer the following:
• Unfinished basement finishing
• Bathroom and kitchen remodels
• Whole home remodels
• Additions
• Detached garages
• Custom home builds
• Covered porches
The Process
Perhaps most important is the client experience. Ryan and his wife Alicia work closely with every client, from initial consultations to final walk-throughs they are personally in constant communication with the client, making sure every detail receives the proper amount of attention.

ou might think that running a construction business with your spouse would be like living on a never-ending episode of a DIY reality show. And you’d be right—except we’re the stars, the crew, the catering, and occasionally, the comic relief.
Hi, we’re Ryan and Alicia Weigel, the husband-and-wife team behind Evolution Construction, where we turn olive green kitchens, cocktail napkin drawings, and Pinterest boards into reimagined dream spaces. One of us (guess who) handles the heavy lifting and power tools like a superhero with a tape measure, while the other keeps an eye on the design and helps make the important decisions like beige or greige. Spoiler: The secret to our success might just be coffee. Lots of coffee.
The Brains and the Brawn
Our story began with both of us being raised in hardworking construction families. I learned to set and grout tile in my early teens and Ryan was scurrying around shingling roofs before he could legally drive a car. Fast-forward to today, and we’ve built more than just cool additions and pool houses; we’ve built a life and a business that we’re incredibly proud of (and, on most days, a little amazed by).
Meet the Dynamic Duo:
Renovating Dreams and Building Realities
By Alicia Weigel
One of us dreams big and isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves, while the other ensures that every detail is picture-perfect. Together, we balance creativity and precision, humor and professionalism—and somehow manage to do it without using the nail gun on each other.
Why Work With Us?
We like to think that working with us is like having your very own construction version of Bonnie and Clyde—except we’re building things up instead of breaking them down. And we promise not to run away with your money. Our clients often tell us they love how personal our approach is. We’re not just here to move walls and pretty-up bathrooms; we’re here to build trust, relationships, and spaces that feel like home.
Plus, let’s face it: who better to create a strong foundation for your project than a couple who knows a thing or two about solid foundations? We’ve tested ours with a 20-year marriage, two kids, and two dogs, and we’re both still alive to tell the tale.
When We’re Not On the Job…
You’ll find us at our son’s sports events, whether it’s on a wrestling
mat or a baseball field, or hopefully near water enjoying a family weekend at the lake. Whether we’re brainstorming our next big project or trying to teach our newest puppy that construction boots are not chew toys, we’re always up for a good laugh and a great challenge.
Let’s Build Something Amazing Together
So, if you’re looking for a construction team that brings expertise, personality, and a touch of humor to the job site, you’ve found us. Let’s turn your vision into something tangible—and maybe have a few laughs along the way. We’d love to hear about your project, so reach out to us, and let’s make something incredible together.
P.S. We’re also open to accepting coffee as a tip. Just saying.

ince 2010, Fargo Monthly has been bringing you positive, community stories and resources and we've loved every minute of it.
Now, Fargo Monthly magazine is known as Meet Fargo, but don't worry—we're still going to have all of the great content you've come to love Fargo Monthly for, however, we are changing our approach ever so slightly. Our new concept will be more peoplefocused. We always hear feedback that the people are what makes the FargoMoorhead community great (which we agree with). So, we decided, why not meet them?
HOME UPGRADERS
This month, we will kick off our first true effort to do so with our home upgraders issue. This is not a comprehensive issue so if there's someone you would like to see featured in the future, please reach out to editorial@spotlightmediafargo.com.

KoeningGrant MEET GRAIN DESIGNS
"Blain and I were both in the architecture program at NDSU, and got an apartment together our 4th year. As with most college students we didn't have any money or much for furniture and decided we would utilize the woodshop at NDSU and try to build the furniture pieces we needed. During the build process we both found a passion bringing our sketches to life with tangible items we could use."
"The following year, as we were about to graduate, we decided to write a business plan for a furniture company instead of focusing on our portfolios. Honestly, at the time, we didn’t really intend to use the plan; it was more of a way to avoid building our own portfolios. That summer, we parted ways—he went back to farming, and I was landscaping and trying to figure out my life. Then, that fall, Blain came back and mentioned a junk market Eco Chic was putting on. He asked what I was up to—not much— and if I wanted to build furniture with him in his apartment garage for the event. We spent about three weeks tearing down barns in South Dakota, brought the materials back, and built as much as we could for the market. That was the start. We realized we had a business plan and decided to put it into action."

BLAIN AND GRANT'S 3 TIPS FOR UPGRADING YOUR HOME
GRAIN DESIGN'S SERVICES
"We build furniture that makes a statement. At Grain Designs, our goal is to design and build custom desks and tables that precisely fit the style and space they're made for. These pieces are usually the heart of the home and office, the places where people spend the most time. This includes dining tables, reception desks, conference tables, office desks. That's really the core of our business."
"But we also offer a variety of auxiliary products and services that make a statement. We do ceiling beams, mantels, wood paneling, shelves and a variety of other furniture that compliment our core offering. When it comes to what is being built in the shop, it is usually some type of table or office desks designed for small to medium sized businesses."
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/250206222947-ea1d2fc96e931efbe53b1d67c8012975/v1/8bd9b34f8401864ee03b973f2e72d8e2.jpeg)
1.
DON’T STRESS ABOUT PERFECT WOOD MATCHING
"A common misconception we hear is that people feel they need to match the existing wood in their home exactly. The challenge is that different wood species, ages, and stains never come out the same twice. If your expectation is a perfect match, you’ll often be disappointed. Instead, we recommend choosing timeless options that complement your finishes, like light-colored white oak, which is super popular and neutral. Staying in the realm of neutral and natural wood tones—both light and dark— works really well."
2.
3.
USE PAINTER’S TAPE FOR PLANNING YOUR SPACE
"When deciding on new furniture, like a dining table, it can be hard to visualize how it will fit in your space. A simple trick is to use blue painter’s tape to outline the dimensions on your floor. It helps you get spatially aware and mess with dimensions until it feels right."
CHOOSE DURABLE AND MAINTAINABLE FINISHES
"For high-use furniture like dining tables, we use a product called Rubio Monocoat. It’s different from traditional finishes because it’s extremely durable and allows homeowners to touch it up themselves. Unlike clear coats that require refinishing when scratched, Rubio Monocoat offers a long-lasting and practical solution for heavy-use pieces."

2 COMMON ERRORS TO AVOID WHEN UPGRADING YOUR HOME
1. DON'T GET CAUGHT UP IN FOLLOWING TRENDS
"People often get really caught up in following the newest trends. They focus on what's on TV and in magazines, which are obviously great sources of inspiration at the time. But the art of defining your own style is so important. One tip is to look at your Pinterest board from three to six years ago and compare what you liked then versus now—the things that you still like today from years ago can help define your own timeless style better. So frequently, people renovate their home based on someone else's inspiration or something they saw in a magazine, and then two years later, they’re tired of that trend and looking for the next one. If you can find consistency in your own style, that’s the key."
2. PRIORITIZE FUNCTION IN A PIECE OVER THOSE ONE-OFF OCCASIONS
"Focus on what you're going to be using 99% of the time and let that guide your design decisions, rather than planning for the rare family dinner or event with extra people once a year. It’s easy to get caught up thinking about the big event, but how you utilize your home on a daily basis should come first."

PERKS OF WORKING WITH US!
"We're passionate about seeing the space and exploring new ideas. We're always happy to give our insight if someone doesn’t know exactly what they want. Having done hundreds of tables at this point, we have a really good understanding of what works, what doesn’t, and what’s important to consider. Our value lies in providing additional insight, whether it’s about spatial planning, design, or the finish. Everything is locally made and custom-made to order, and we source the highest quality materials. We used to work primarily with reclaimed materials, but now only about 10 to 15% of our projects are reclaimed. This allows us to offer products in a wider range of styles— from a really rustic look to a super modern, refined, or industrial solution. By sourcing higher-quality materials and refining our craftsmanship, we avoid the limitations of massproduced furniture, where you’re stuck with the sizes and materials the manufacturer provides, often without proper quality control. Quality and customization are our biggest strengths."

WHO I AM OUTSIDE MY WORK
"Outside of my profession, I am a compassionate and dedicated individual with a strong focus on family, faith, and service. I share my life with two beloved dogs, one of which is a rescue from 4 Luv of Dogs, which I highly recommend. I am involved in ministry for the developmentally disabled because I want to make a positive impact in my community. I also enjoy deepening my faith by participating in Bible study throughout the week. Family is central to my life, and I cherish spending time with my three-year-old grandson, Spencer, as well as my three sons. My husband and I have enjoyed nearly 27 years of marriage, we both value the support and love that comes with our long-standing partnership."
MY GO-TO PLACES FOR COFFEE & BREAKFAST
"To maintain my energy I like to start my day with a healthy smoothie I usually make from my home."
MY FAVORITE WAY TO GIVE BACK
"I love my Church and the outreach to the developmentally disabled through the Jesus Cares Ministry. It is really refreshing to spend time with others who have such difficult challenges and yet have such beautiful spirits."
MY FAVORITE SPOTS IN TOWN TO UNWIND
"The Rustad Recreation Center is a great place to go for a walk or play pickleball when winter days are cold. When the weather is nice, I love exploring all the parks in my area with my grandson. I also enjoy bike riding on the miles of biking paths right by my house in Brandt Crossing."

HOW I CAN HELP UPGRADE YOUR HOME
KEY SERVICES I PROVIDE
"At Studio Rogue, we specialize in turning your space into something extraordinary—whether it’s a brand-new build or a much-needed renovation. From a quick 90-minute consultation to overseeing a full-scale project, we’re with you every step of the way. We also offer project management services, ensuring everything runs smoothly while you sit back and watch your dream space come to life."
KRISTEN'S 3 TIPS FOR UPGRADING YOUR HOME
1.
LIGHTING IS EVERYTHING "Use statement fixtures to add personality and incorporate layered lighting to transform any room. Combine accent, task, and ambient lighting for a well-balanced and inviting space."
DECLUTTER WITH PURPOSE "Built-in storage and custom drawer inserts in high-traffic rooms can transform your space. By giving everything its proper place, you eliminate random toy piles and chaotic junk drawers, making it easy to keep your home organized and stress-free."
DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF WINDOW TREATMENTS "They’re like sunglasses for your home—keeping things cool, shielding you from harsh sunlight, and adding a touch of personality. Stylish and functional? It's a win-win!"
2 COMMON ERRORS TO AVOID WHEN UPGRADING YOUR HOME
2. 1.

FLEETING TRENDS MAY BE TEMPTING, but going all-in can make your home feel outdated faster than you’d think. Instead, invest in timeless pieces that stand the test of time and sprinkle in trendy accents for a fresh, modern touch without the commitment.
CONTRAST IS THE SECRET TO A DYNAMIC AND ENGAGING INTERIOR. It prevents your space from feeling flat or dull while drawing attention to key features. And remember, contrast isn’t just about color—it’s about pairing light with dark, shiny with matte, or rough with smooth for a perfectly balanced look.
PERKS OF WORKING WITH ME!
"One cool perk of working with me on a home remodeling project? You get a partner who’s as obsessed with your vision as you are—plus, I’ve got a decade of tricks up my sleeve to make sure everything runs smoothly. Think of it like having a personal design concierge who knows how to juggle a million moving parts while keeping your stress level at zero. Bonus: I’m also great at finding creative solutions when things don’t go as planned—because when you’re remodeling, something always happens!"
"Additionally, the most valuable aspect of our service is the personal touch and the experience that comes with it. With a decade of expertise under our belts, we work closely with each client to understand their vision, needs, and quirks (because every home has its own personality). We don't just design spaces—we create functional, beautiful environments that surpass expectations by anticipating challenges and delivering creative solutions. It's not just about getting the job done; it's about making sure you love the journey along the way—and the final result even more."

WE DON’T JUST DESIGN BEAUTIFUL SPACES—WE ALSO MANAGE THE CHAOS. "From floor plans to paint swatches, we handle the nitty-gritty details so you can enjoy the process without the stress."
WE’RE NOT JUST ABOUT LOOKS. "We’re all about function too! We make sure your space is as practical as it is stunning—because no one wants a gorgeous kitchen that doesn’t have enough counter space."
WE’RE NOT AFRAID TO BREAK THE RULES. "While we’re experts in design, we love thinking outside the box and pushing the boundaries of traditional home design. After all, who said your living room can’t be both chic and functional?"
MY FAVORITE SPOTS IN TOWN TO UNWIND
"When I need a much-needed break, you’ll find me on two wheels or two feet, cruising the trails along the river. It’s the perfect reset—nothing like a little fresh air, a scenic view, and some quality time with nature to clear the mind and get those creative juices flowing again. Plus, it's a lot easier than rearranging a whole living room!"
WHO I AM OUTSIDE MY WORK
"When I'm not busy designing dream homes, I'm camping in my vintage camper with my husband, Spencer, and our energetic threeyear-old son, Kade. In the summer, you can catch me dominating the local softball league, and come winter, I’m sweeping up the competition at the FM Curling Club Off the field (and ice), I serve on the Board of Directors for the Building Industry Association (BIA) and as Vice Chair of the Professional Women in Building Council Through these roles, I get to give back by volunteering for Rebuilding Together and the Herdina Construction Trades Camp."
"When I’ve got a busy day ahead with clients, my go-to spot for a fuel-up is Moonrise Cafe in downtown Fargo for a quick, yummy bite and a delicious coffee that gets me in the zone. If I’m craving a little more to kick off my day, I head to Michele’s Table for a dash of French flair."

HOW I CAN HELP UPGRADE YOUR HOME
KEY SERVICES I PROVIDE
"I offer a range of services designed to bring cohesive and personalized style to every project. My expertise lies in full-service interior design, which includes remodels, new builds, furniture selection, and decor. One of my strengths is creating a cohesive design that ensures every element of a project flows seamlessly. "For clients seeking a quicker design solution, I provide design consultations. These one-hour sessions are perfect for generating fresh ideas and actionable plans tailored to your space. We can cover as much or as little as you’d like, making these consultations a flexible and efficient option."
"I also specialize in paint consultations, offering expert guidance to help you choose colors that truly transform your space."
"Whether it’s a full-service project or a smaller-scale consultation, I work with all types of budgets. I source from local vendors and big-box stores to ensure you achieve a home you love, no matter your price point. My goal is to make the design process approachable, enjoyable, and tailored to your unique style and needs."
LISA'S 3 TIPS FOR UPGRADING YOUR HOME
3. 2. 1.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/250206222947-ea1d2fc96e931efbe53b1d67c8012975/v1/7ff3dea72e30fd06fb8a467318c0cb7a.jpeg)
INVEST IN YOUR LIGHTING "People often overlook lighting or treat it as an afterthought, but lighting is one of the biggest statements you can make in your home and can completely shift the mood and ambiance."
HIRE A DESIGNER EARLY ON IN YOUR PROJECT "If you’re tackling a large project or feeling uncertain about your selections, invest in a designer early on. Many people start with DIY and later regret their choices. Bringing in a designer from the beginning can help you avoid mistakes and create a space you truly love."
MAKE YOUR UPGRADES COHESIVE "If you're upgrading your home in stages, be mindful of how the upgrades will look next to the existing layouts, colors, and trims. Plan ahead and make sure you will be happy with how everything will look, especially as you complete your remodeling in stages."
COMMON ERROR TO AVOID WHEN UPGRADING YOUR HOME
"One common mistake homeowners make is choosing new flooring without considering how it fits with the rest of the home’s design. Flooring is a significant investment, and selecting the wrong style can lead to costly regrets. Poorly matched flooring can clash with your existing interior woodwork, creating a disjointed look."
"Because flooring is expensive to replace and involves substantial labor and disruption, it’s crucial to get professional help when making this decision. Consulting a designer or flooring expert can ensure you choose a style that complements your home and avoids unnecessary hassle later."
PERKS OF WORKING WITH ME!
1. I help you reimagine your spaces.
2. I help clients create a cohesive look throughout their whole home.
3. Spoiler alert: You will get a gift from me at the end of your full service interior design project, as I do not give gifts for my hourly consultations.

MEET DESIGN BY RUTH
After spending a few years traveling abroad post-high school, Ruth Economy returned home to pursue a degree in Interior Design—a field that perfectly blends my aptitude for creativity and practicality. Shortly after graduating, she worked in Fargo for a few years, where she discovered my passion for custom luxury furniture. During that time, she gained invaluable experience working with bespoke upholstery, case goods, exquisite fabrics, and elegant fixtures. "I’m thrilled to bring that expertise to Grand Forks, and the surrounding area," Ruth said.

RUTH'S 3 TIPS FOR UPGRADING YOUR HOME
3. 2. 1. A FRESH COAT OF PAINT GOES A LONG WAY! "For overall main/open areas of the home, I prefer a soft, neutral paint color. Dove Wing by Benjamin Moore is one of my favorites."
WALLPAPER IS ANOTHER GREAT OPTION WHEN LOOKING FOR A REFRESH. "Whether it be textural or patterned, wallpaper introduces character to a space and brings it to life!"
ACCESSORIES ARE A FUN AND EASY WAY TO IMMEDIATELY ELEVATE YOUR HOME. "Consider revamping with fresh artwork that showcases your personality, unique throw pillows, visually striking coffee table books, decorative trays, candles, lamps, vases, and plants. Greenery is a must! Faux or real."

"It’s extremely important to pay attention to the size and scale of your space! If you have a large living room for example, you will want to make sure to ground it with a sizable rug that fills the area and holds all the furniture. You want to avoid either overwhelming the space or underwhelming with the incorrect size and scale of the pieces you fill it with."
"I prioritize understanding and addressing my clients’ needs, ensuring they feel valued and wellsupported. This commitment is reflected in my prompt communication and efficient approach to every project."

EMILY'S 3 TIPS FOR UPGRADING YOUR HOME
1.
3. 2.
HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER. A professional can help you navigate design choices, maximize the functionality of your space, and ensure that your vision is brought to life seamlessly. Their expertise will not only save you time but also prevent costly mistakes.
REFRESH YOUR PAINT AND/OR WALLCOVERINGS. Refreshing your paint and wallcoverings can have a dramatic impact on the look and feel of your home. A new coat of paint or an updated wallpaper design can instantly transform a room, adding depth, brightness, or a touch of sophistication to your space.
UPDATE YOUR LIGHTING. Updating your lighting is essential for both aesthetics and functionality. New lighting fixtures can enhance the ambiance of a room, highlight key features, and improve overall visibility. Whether it’s adding statement pieces or installing more energyefficient options, the right lighting can elevate your home’s atmosphere.
2 COMMON ERRORS TO AVOID WHEN UPGRADING YOUR HOME

SKIPPING PROFESSIONAL HELP. While it may seem tempting to take on the project yourself, working with a skilled designer ensures that your vision is executed properly, saving you time, money, and potential mistakes down the line.
OVERLY INFLUENCED BY TRENDS. While it's important to stay inspired by current styles, focusing too heavily on trends can result in a space that quickly feels dated. Instead, prioritize timeless design choices that reflect your personal taste and create long-lasting appeal in your home.
PERKS OF WORKING WITH ME!
"One cool perk of working with neo on a home remodeling project is that we will listen to what you are looking for and maximize your space to your everyday needs. The sky's the limit!"

"When I need a break from work, I enjoy unwinding with facials at Face Foundrie, refreshing my nails at Uniq Nail Spa, sessions at Hotworx and the gym, grabbing a tea from Synergy Nutrition, or simply enjoying quality time with friends at the local breweries."
WHO I AM OUTSIDE MY WORK
"In addition to my design work at neo, I also contribute part-time at Your Day By Nicole. Outside of my professional commitments, I prioritize quality time with family and friends, and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including spending time at the lake, snowboarding, and icefishing, along with attending sporting events, and going to concerts. I’m passionate about exploring new places and staying active, as life is too short not to do the things you love!"
MY FAVORITE WAY TO GIVE BACK
"A few organizations that I love to support in town are the Ronald McDonald House, the Golden Drive, Bio Girls, and really anything that comes my way! I’m also an active member in the Building Industry Association of the Red River Valley, serving as the vice chair of the Events Committee, and volunteering in the many events they have to offer!"

CAN HELP UPGRADE YOUR HOME
KEY SERVICES I PROVIDE
"My top two services start with our 90-minute consultation. It’s a one-time, in-home consultation where I come in to help clients who have ideas but need an expert opinion before making decisions. It’s a flat $300 fee for 90 minutes. During that time, I’ll review paint colors, furniture arrangements, or any design ideas they’re considering and offer advice. For example, I might suggest a wall covering, recommend swapping a loveseat for two accent chairs, or just confirm their ideas to give them confidence. This service doesn’t include follow-up work like sourcing products or detailed planning—it’s really about offering guidance on the spot. It’s not the most popular option since many people prefer to have us handle everything, but it’s a great choice for those who enjoy doing the work themselves."
"Another service we offer, which I don’t see a lot of designers doing, is project management. This is especially useful for projects that require contractors, like installing new flooring, painting walls, or updating plumbing or countertops. Essentially, I manage everything for the client. Instead of them hiring and coordinating multiple contractors, I handle all of it. I schedule the work, create timelines, and ensure the process is as smooth as possible. Clients receive one invoice from me, covering everything, so they don’t have to juggle payments to multiple people. I also work exclusively with contractors I trust—those who consistently deliver high-quality results."
HOW PAIGE CREATES A SUCCESSFUL PROJECT

![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/250206222947-ea1d2fc96e931efbe53b1d67c8012975/v1/7ff3dea72e30fd06fb8a467318c0cb7a.jpeg)
HOW
3. 2.
ESTABLISH A BUDGET “Establishing a budget is critical, but it’s just as important to include a buffer. We work hard to stay as close to the budget as possible, but it’s not always realistic. For example, if the budget is $100,000, we gather estimates and come in around $97,000. That’s great—until contractors start working and notice unexpected issues, or there are additions to the scope. Things like this happen all the time. Having a buffer helps maintain surprises and alleviates financial stress when adjustments are needed. The size of the buffer depends on the project scope, but a good rule is to set your stated budget $5,000–$15,000 lower than what you’re truly prepared to spend. This way, you’re ready for any changes or additions that come up. While we always do our best to stick to the budget and explore alternatives to keep costs down, having a buffer makes the process smoother and more manageable for everyone involved.”
TIMELINE “Setting realistic timeline expectations is just as important as budgeting. We always aim to complete projects by the client’s desired deadline, but the reality is that things can shift. Timelines are interconnected—one contractor’s delay can affect everyone else. Scheduling contractors requires aligning their availability, and unexpected changes like emergencies, sick days, or additions to the project can cause delays. I recommend including a grace period of 2–4 weeks for completion. For instance, if the target is August 1, finishing by mid-to-late August is still a success in this industry. My relationships with trusted contractors help prioritize projects, but clients should understand that some flexibility is needed. Communication is key here, and I always keep clients informed about progress, changes, or delays to ensure they feel involved and confident throughout the process.”
KNOW WHAT YOU WANT “Knowing exactly what you want and finalizing all the details before starting a project is crucial. Many people are eager to jump in, thinking a project like a bathroom refresh is straightforward, but they don’t realize how many decisions and steps are involved. For instance, even with something seemingly simple like a new countertop, you need to consider the thickness, whether you want a backsplash, the sink style, the faucet type, and more."
PERKS OF WORKING WITH ME!
"Design has been in my family for quite some time now. Some might say I am a 'Third Generation Designer". My love for design began at a young age and has only grown over the years. Leading into my professional career, I have had experience with assisting my own family with projects, while also working with some of the best designers in Fargo. My experiences I truly believe set me apart from other designers, from the knowledge I have obtained to the unmatched growth I have had over the years."
"Working with clients offers a unique opportunity to form connections with those who you may never would have otherwise. It is an honor to be hired by such incredible people who put their trust in our expertise. At Mosaic, we prioritize our clients and put their needs first. No matter the type of project, location or budget, we pride ourselves on being accommodating and fair, while always exceeding their expectations."

NOT BEING SPACE AWARE “Size is a huge concern when it comes to furniture placement. People often love big furniture, but their space might not accommodate it. Floor plans and space planning are critical to ensure the furniture fits well and functions as intended.”

MY 3 TIPS FOR UPGRADING YOUR HOME
3. 2. 1.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/250206222947-ea1d2fc96e931efbe53b1d67c8012975/v1/7ff3dea72e30fd06fb8a467318c0cb7a.jpeg)
ADD A FIREPLACE TO
YOUR HOME
"Adding a Fireplace into your home will help give a nice focal point as well as giving you a nice cozy space during those cold winter days."
EXPAND YOUR OUTDOOR SPACES WITH LANDSCAPING AND FURNITURE
"Adding and/or expanding outdoor space with landscaping and furniture will give you the feeling of additional usable square feet for your home during warm months. This helps you get the most out of your outdoor living."
RESURFACE YOUR OLD SPACES
"Resurfacing old spaces (back splash/existing fireplace) helps give a nice refresh to your space to keep your home up with current styles while not having to do any major teardowns or rebuilds."
COMMON ERRORS TO AVOID WHEN UPGRADING YOUR HOME!
"One common mistake I'm noticing a lot involves the use of thin brick—a popular choice for backsplashes and other design elements. Unlike tile, thin brick is an actual clay brick product and should not be treated the same way during installation. A frequent issue arises when homeowners smear grout or mortar over the surface, unintentionally creating a 'German schmear' effect. While this look can be intentional for some, improper application often results in an undesired finish that obscures the natural texture of the brick.
Another error I see often happens when selecting a fireplace without consulting an expert. Homeowners may choose a large, eye-catching fireplace that doesn’t suit the size of their space. Oversized fireplaces can generate excessive heat in smaller rooms, making them uncomfortable and impractical to use for extended periods."

McNeal & Friends is a fine home furnishings boutique and interior design firm, serving clients nationwide in both residential and commercial aspects. They have two locations, one in Big Sky, MT, and the other in Fargo.
LEXI JORDHEIM: Lexi has her master's in architecture from NDSU. At McNeal & Friends, she is the lead designer in Fargo. "I do a lot of construction projects and home remodels. Because of my background, I feel like that's my niche."

MCNEAL & FRIENDS' 3 TIPS FOR UPGRADING YOUR HOME
INVEST IN TIMELESS FEATURES
"Focus on upgrades that add long-term value, such as high-quality flooring, cabinetry, or fixtures. Timeless designs ensure your investment remains relevant and appealing for years to come."
CREATE A COHESIVE DESIGN
"Ensure that your upgrades complement the existing style of your home. Whether through color palettes, materials, or design elements, maintaining consistency will create a polished and harmonious look."
WORK WITH A PROFESSIONAL
"Collaborating with an interior designer can help you make informed decisions, avoid costly mistakes, and ensure that your upgrades align with your vision while maximizing the potential of your space."
A COMMON ERROR TO AVOID WHEN UPGRADING YOUR HOME
"One of the most common mistakes homeowners make when upgrading their home is neglecting to create a cohesive plan before starting. Without a clear vision and detailed plan, upgrades can feel disjointed, or important details like flow, scale, and functionality can be overlooked. As interior designers, we always recommend taking the time to establish a comprehensive design strategy that considers both the big picture and the finer details. This ensures that every decision works harmoniously within the overall aesthetic and purpose of the home." 3. 2. 1.

By Josiah Kopp & Kristen Carlson
hen the homeowner first purchased this home only a few years ago, the existing design and layout didn't quite match her taste. As you look at the "before photos", you'll see why; this home was the epitome of dark and dated—its walls felt like they were closing in and the overall design lacked any personality. The homeowner tasked Kristen Carlson of Studio Rogue Design with the challenge of creating a new kitchen and living room space that effortlessly mixed functionality, a sense of airiness, and charm.
The homeowner's main goal for the design was to have a space that she loved coming home to; a space that reflected her personality that also functioned better for her lifestyle. The strategy was to open up the space, brighten it up, and sprinkle in some quirky charm.
Remodel photos by Josiah Kopp
"Before" photos submitted by Kristen Carlson
"Most essential to the project was to remove the wall that separated the kitchen and living room so we could flood the kitchen with light," Kristen said. "The kitchen was very dark and who wants to cook in a cave? Nobody wants to spend quality time in a place that feels like a black hole."
Another top priority was to make the living room less awkward in its layout due to its narrow size, so Kristen set out to create a cozy space that felt intentional and inviting.
First on the chopping block: the cabinets, the wall between the living room and kitchen, the pantry walls, the soffits, and the flooring—all gone. Kristen gave the space a fresh start with new millwork, paint, and lighting. The breakfast nook finally found its purpose, becoming the new pantry, while the new kitchen cabinets stretched into the old pantry area and shot up to the ceiling for maximum storage. Bonus: the old pantry even had a window, bringing in more sunshine. The entryway also got a facelift with the wall chopped down to a half wall, making the space more welcoming.
Where there was once a wall between the kitchen and living room, now stands a large peninsula with countertop seating and pendant lights overhead, perfect for casual dining or hanging out. In the living room, Kristen added bookshelves flanking the tall, narrow window, with a cozy bench underneath for extra seating. Since the homeowner wasn’t looking for another TV zone (the basement's got that covered), this living room became an entertainment haven or a spot to curl up with a book.

"In the kitchen, we went with natural white oak cabinets (courtesy of Bits Custom Cabinets) to keep things light and bright while nodding to the oak charm sprinkled throughout the house. But we couldn’t stop there—we added the green-painted cabinets in Sherwin Williams 'Rookwood Jade' for a playful pop of color."

Bits Custom Cabinets absolutely nailed it with a custom dog feeding station at the end of the peninsula. It’s a pullout drawer with a custom dog bone handle perfectly fitted for two dishes— one for food, one for water. And above? A drawer to stash all the dog food essentials.

"To keep the space feeling light and airy, we opted for MSI Quartz's 'Carrara Breve' countertop from Northern Stone. Its subtle veining adds just the right amount of elegance without stealing the spotlight from the other design elements. And for a touch of extra function and charm, we strategically placed a gorgeous white oak inlaid butcher block into the countertop—perfect for the homeowner’s culinary needs."

"We chose Pergo's 'Cargo Canvas' laminate flooring from Carpet World, which flows seamlessly through the space and ties in perfectly with the white oak cabinetry. For the walls, Sherwin Williams 'Crisp Linen' paint adds a soft warmth that wraps the whole main floor in a cozy, inviting vibe."

Let’s not forget the showstopper: the backsplash! The "Line Positive" tile by Soho Film from Syverson Tile delivers the quirk and personality this kitchen was craving—an absolute statement piece. The clear glass globe light fixtures from Valley Lights pull it all together, adding just the right touch without feeling heavy, and subtly tying in the black accents from the backsplash.
The pantry, now relocated to a much more practical spot, is bigger and better, and also features a custom kitty passthrough door, designed to keep the homeowner’s feline friends’ food safely out of reach from the ever-curious dogs.

The living room keeps the fun going with bright pops of color and a sprinkle of whimsy. Take a look at that stunning wallcovering behind the custom bookshelves—"Otherworldly Botanicals: Garden Fantastical" wallpaper by Spoonflower was the perfect finishing touch! The bookshelves seamlessly blend the white oak and Rookwood Jade, standing out beautifully against the bold wallpaper. And let’s not forget the vibrant, colorful furniture from Joybird, which brings in so much of the homeowner’s personality and style—the whole space feels completely one-of-a-kind.

scar’s journey into entrepreneurship began at an early age while he spent time tinkering in his grandparents’ backyard. At just "11 or 12" years old, he would work with his grandfather in a backyard woodshop, crafting items to sell. This early exposure to creating and selling things planted the seeds of an entrepreneurial spirit that would later flourish.
THE FIRST SPARK OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Even as a young child, Oscar demonstrated a knack for business. Like many kids, he operated a
lemonade stand, but his true passion emerged when he got his driver’s license at age 16. A summer job at McDonald’s or Target didn’t appeal to him, so he decided to explore other opportunities. During the previous
summer he had learned how to detail cars for family and friends, something he saw as a potential business idea.
“Before I got my license, I detailed cars for my aunt, grandparents, and

family,” Oscar said. Using a shop vac and cleaning supplies from AutoZone, he’d load everything up, and his dad would drive him to job sites. This early experience laid the groundwork for what was to come.
The summer Oscar turned 16, he decided to commit to detailing. With a 2007 Honda Accord as his work vehicle, he invested in basic equipment, purchasing the cheapest pressure washer and vacuum he could find. Using photos from the previous summer’s detailing jobs, he made a Facebook post in a Fargo-Moorhead community group, introducing himself as a student starting a summer business. According to Oscar, the post’s authenticity resonated with the community and generated enough interest to keep him busy for two months.
“That post kept me busy for most of the summer,” Oscar said. “I think the key was being genuine and personal. People responded to my story and wanted to support me.”
In those first two months, Oscar and a friend detailed over 40 cars, often working 14-hour days.
SCALING UP
The next few years brought both challenges and growth. Oscar’s entrepreneurial focus took a backseat during his senior year of high school as he spent time enjoying his final year with his classmates and a subsequent summer fly fishing in Montana with friends.
"Going to Montana for two weeks was big for me," Oscar said. "Our car broke down in the middle of nowhere, in bear country, and we had to walk to get parts to get it fixed. I learned a lot about being able to do things on my own during that trip."
Eventually, Oscar dove back into detailing full-time. But, when the colder temperatures rolled around, he learned that winter posed unique challenges for outdoor detailing, so he sought a heated workspace. Through networking, he secured a corner in a construction shop—a less-thanideal location but a critical step toward year-round operations.
Oscar also began exploring highvalue services like paint correction and ceramic coating. Teaching himself through trial and error, he practiced on personal and family vehicles before offering these services to clients. His first big project—a ceramic coating on a GT350 Mustang—served as a launching pad for this new service line, which he detailed through videos and photos to share on Facebook.
Oscar’s marketing strategy relied heavily on authenticity. By posting detailed before-and-after photos and sharing his journey on Facebook, he attracted a steady stream of clients. A simple ad—“Do you wish your car looked like this?”—brought in lucrative ceramic coating jobs, some exceeding $1,000.
As the business grew, so did his team. By 2024, Oscar had hired two employees and a content creator to enhance his online presence—hires he admits he should have done sooner.
"The biggest mistake I have made is not delegating soon enough," Oscar said. "I can only do so many things on my own. But I haven’t gone out and bought a brand-new truck or taken crazy trips. Everything I make goes right back into growing the business."

LOOKING AHEAD
Today, Oscar’s detailing business is thriving. While interior detailing remains part of their services, the focus has shifted to high-end work that attracts luxury clientele. With a steady flow of jobs, a growing team, and plans for future expansion, Oscar’s young entrepreneurial journey is one to admire.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, Oscar’s advice is simple: “Just start. You don’t have to have everything figured out. Take the first step, learn as you go, and reinvest in your dreams.”

Josh of All Trades
By Ashley Morken, Owner, Unglued
Morken
You’re familiar with a jack of all trades, but how ‘bout a Josh of All Trades!? We met the maker behind the business (spoiler alert: Josh) ultimately when his daughter was in our Young Maker Market at our annual Unglued: Craft Fest! Turns out the handcrafted talents truly run in the family and a couple of years later, we saw his own business start up and create really cool handcrafted pieces— read on about them!
Tell us a bit about yourself. I’m originally from the Twin Cities but I moved to the FargoMoorhead area almost 25 years ago to go to NDSU. As you can maybe guess by my business name, I’m into all kinds of things. I spend a lot of time outdoors fishing, camping, and hiking, among other things. Lately, I’ve been doing a lot more SCUBA diving. I especially enjoy shipwreck diving in Lake Superior.

Describe what type of products you make under Josh of All Trades.
Just like my name says, I do a lot of things. Right now I’m mainly working on wood turning and 3D printing. This year, I’ve been trying my hand at dying and stabilizing wood to use in my turning.
Tell us how you got started with your businesses.
Although I really just started my business last year, I’ve been working with my lathe for almost

15 years. It all started because my wife bought me a gift card to build a custom fly fishing rod. After doing some research, I realized the most complicated way to build that rod would be to turn my own wood handle. So I bought a used lathe to give it a try.
What are your personal favorite items you've created so far?
Several years ago, I collected a cool piece of driftwood from the shores of Lake Superior. I thought it was a really cool piece but had no idea how I was going to use it. After really getting into wood turning, I decided to have it dyed and stabilized and mixed with some epoxy to make some really cool pen blanks. It’s really interesting to see the final piece have little specks of sand and holes from the years spent in the lake.
This year I started creating topographical lake map lights. It’s a fun combination of my love of fishing and 3D printing. I have maps of some of the more popular local lakes now, but I’d love to make some more custom pieces.
What was one of the most difficult pieces you've created?
This year, I built a custom rod for a trip to one of my favorite places to fish, the Brule River in Northern Wisconsin. I decided to use a really beautiful piece of flame box elder for the handle. This wood was very soft and difficult to work with. It also had to be stabilized before I could turn it. The handle was too long to fit in one piece so I had to get creative with my build process. It was really fun and rewarding to finish it. Too bad it didn’t catch any fish on my trip!
What is the most popular item you specifically sell?
Right now, I would say my custom lighters and pipes. They’re retro-style refillable trench lighters cased in custom-turned wood or acrylic sleeves. I’ve made them in a lot of color combinations, and they always turn out to be such unique, fun pieces.
What is something you've enjoyed the most about doing this handcrafted business?
The challenge. It’s one thing to just go out and make things in the shop, but to keep coming up with fresh ideas and creating has been a lot of fun.
What is the most challenging thing?
Finding ways to create things others aren’t. There are so many talented makers out there it can be hard to stand out.
What is something people might find surprising about working with 3D printing or wood turning or both?
The barrier to entry for both crafts is actually fairly low. If it’s something you’re interested in trying, you can get relatively inexpensive tools and get started. But on the flip side of that, the sky is the limit on how difficult you want to make it!
For 3D printing in particular, there is a lot of problem-solving involved. The newer printers are getting better and better, but if you get into 3D printing, you need to plan to spend quite a bit of time troubleshooting and tinkering with the equipment. Which is the part that makes it fun for me)
What is a word that best describes you? Curious
What advice would you have given yourself five years ago?
Just jump in and do stuff. Trying new things can be intimidating, but once you get started, it’s not as hard as it seems.
Where can people find your work?
I’ll have a booth at the Unglued Craft Fest this March, I sell some of my work at Unglued in Brewhalla, I have an Etsy shop (joshofalltradesmn.etsy.com) and I have a Facebook (/joshofalltradesMN) and Instagram (@joshofalltrades218) account where you can contact me about custom orders.
