PUBLISHER
HI,
What a way to introduce myself! With the anticipation of my second child in April comes the excitement of the new larger Design & Living.
A
lthough I am not new to Design & Living, I have recently been given an opportunity to take on a more considerable role in this magazine. My new role on the editorial side is a great pre-holiday gift to me and I feel fortunate to be part of this magazine that seems to keep growing and setting new standards in this area. As you can see, this month brought great change and a new, larger format that we are proud to debut. This new format will open the door to more sophisticated ideas and concepts for content as well as photography. For December, we went off the map with Design & Living’s first ever shopping guide for the home! The entire team has worked hard to ensure that we have filled this issue with unique items and décor for your home that will make shopping locally that much easier. The goal was simple; to create awareness for those other hard working individuals, the small business owners. The Red River Valley is renowned for their tremendous support for our communities, so make sure to check out all they have to offer and spend locally to help our communities continue to thrive! For the new year, we are looking forward to eight new issues featuring the best talents in this industry and highlighting everything from alternative living to repurposing and lake homes. I’m excited to get started on another great year of Design & Living and look forward to hearing your feedback and ideas. Until then, enjoy reading our December issue and may you have the happiest of holidays!

C
ozy fireplaces, fleece throws, hot cocoa — winter does have its perks. While I love these comforts that a home can provide, my favorite part of this winter season is spending time with family and reconnecting with good friends. The holiday season may be your busiest time of year with attending Christmas parties for work, planning holiday meals, shopping for gifts and entertaining friends and family. We know how stressful it can be, but that’s not what this season is about! It’s not all about cleaning, decorating and planning; it’s about loving, celebrating and giving. That’s why we put together this issue of Design & Living — to help you with your search for that perfect decor item or home product. We also gathered some expert advice, so you can relax and shop efficiently. Happy Holidays!

Leanne Sucrow has been designing interiors for over 10 years and owns a local design firm, The Green Room. When she needs an outlet for creating, you can find her upcycling and painting furniture for her occasional shop in downtown Fargo, The Studio.
Alesha Leslie has been in the home building industry her entire life as her grandfather and father were both builders. She has been an interior design consultant in the FM area for 14 years, mainly consulting with local builder, Heritage Homes.
Heather Breckheimer is an award winning designer who has been designing for the past 14 years in the Twin Cities and recently moved to the Fargo area. She joined the Luxury Design team in Fargo, working with local builders, designers and homeowners.
SUCROW
"When shopping for home decor, there is no right or wrong answer. Go towards pieces that you are drawn to, but make sure they have a home! Sometimes a little voided space is relevant for a well balanced room."

LESLIE
”It is always helpful to have an inspiration picture along to help you visualize and keep you in the right direction to creating the look of your dreams.”
BRECKHEIMER
”When designing I lean toward keeping natural and timeless looks on the more expensive items such as furniture pieces. Add your color and personality with accessories. Less is more is also a great rule of thumb!”

”Purchase items that speak to you. That being said, it’s good to step out of your comfort box for a change of style or color, as long as the selection still feels good to you.”
”I love blending products from Hobby Lobby, Scheels Home, O’Day Caché and even Target. I like to find a favorite piece, something unexpected, and build on that — it’s creating a custom style for each client that keeps design fresh AND personal.”

MESH RIBBONS AMI BAXTER The focal point started at the hearth and fireplace, but the large tree also feels like the heart of the décor. I also love fabric – having fabric in trees is really important. These ribbons were a staple in the design.
You’d be surprised how much ribbon can add to a design. Choose different colors and textures to create the look you want. Hobby Lobby
