his year, I embraced the Scandinavian tradition of hygge, which vastly improved my spirits throughout these past months. However, I'm just going to come right out and say it–I am so ready for winter to be over.
I know that I'm not alone. But while I am writing this editorial, it's still March and we had to reschedule nearly half of our interviews and photoshoots due to a snow storm. April can't come soon enough–just kidding. Don't tell our graphic designer what I said. We like to use all of the time we can get when putting together each issue of Design & Living Magazine.
Those people and products are what we would like to share with you, just in case you needed more motivation to get out and enjoy the warmer days ahead while supporting local businesses and building our community. After this goes to print, I hope to run into you at one of the many furniture or home decor stores we have featured in this magazine. When I do, please don't hesitate to say hello. Until next time,
This issue was particularly fun to make because one of the photographers and I visited shops in Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo, and even made a few purchases for ourselves. Although I love online shopping at regional, national and even global retailers, there's nothing like getting to know local shop owners and their staff. Plus, their inventory often includes handmade, on-trend and high-end products carefully chosen to appeal to our Midwestern sensibilities.

Parade of Homes Ties In With Tax Incentives on New Construction

he Home Builders Association of F-M's Spring Parade of Homes showcases newly constructed homes in our communities each spring. It invites you to explore the area's new developments, infill communities and the homes that will help you get ideas to update your current space, or make plans for your future nest. With the Parade happening April 27-29 and May 4-6, I thought it made sense to highlight some local tax incentives on new construction. In Fargo and West Fargo, you can save up to $4,000 on your property tax bill when you buy a newly built home. Home owners get an exemption on up to

$150,000 off their property valuation for two taxable years following the year the home was sold. In Dilworth and Moorhead, you can get a two-year property tax rebate on newly built homes. On a $250,000 home, this is a value of $5,500 over the two-year period. There is no maximum value on new construction of single-family homes, including the building and land. Of course, there are many small communities surrounding the F-M metro area. Contact your local jurisdiction for more details on specific incentives they may offer. This year's Spring Parade of Homes includes homes in Fargo, Horace,
Moorhead and West Fargo. Prices range from just under $190,000 to over $2 million, offering something for first-time homebuyers, move-up buyers, emptynesters and those looking for a luxury home. All the way from modern, to farmhouse, to Craftsman, come see the trends of what our homebuilding industry has to offer. A TRIP TO MARKET with designingwomen2 (And What They Brought Back)

his January, three of the five owners of designingwomen2 traveled to Las Vegas Market to see the newest trends in the interior design industry. Weeks later, we sat down with Kris Carlson, Linda Birmingham and Kari Rasmus in their Fargo store as they gushed about the experience. What is Market? "Imagine taking West Acres, adding ten stories and then making three buildings of that," Carlson said when describing the physical environment of Market. Las Vegas Market was founded in 2005 and has become the most comprehensive furniture, home dĂŠcor and gift market in the Midwest. It is located in a 5 million + square-foot, permanent venue called World Market Center.

DÉCOR DESIGN&LIVING What They Did Carlson, Birmingham and Rasmus landed in Las Vegas on Sunday, Jan. 28 and were at Market until Thursday, Feb. 1. "The routine went get up, grab a cup of coffee and hit the road. We had appointments each day with vendors that we know and trust. We also ended up with appointments with new vendors. We would be on our feet all day long, break for lunch and hit the road again until 6 that night, fall in the bus seat on the way home, grab dinner, go to bed and then get up and do it all over again," Carlson explained. "This is not where you go to gamble. It's work and then you drop, but it's fun," Rasmus said. "It's exhilarating and exhausting at the same time," added Birmingham. They have attended Las Vegas Market in addition to High Point Market many times. Though finding their way around the venue was a daunting task on their first trip, Carlson, Birmingham and Rasmus now have an easy time navigating World Market Center. Throughout their careers, the women of designingwomen2 have seen Market evolve. "It's grown every year to the point that people are going to Las Vegas rather than Highpoint," Birmingham said. "At Las Vegas, they show new items. When you go to high point, they show everything. We don't have to see everything. We want to keep in touch with what's new," Carlson said. What They Found The Midwest has a reputation for being behind on trends, so their goal was to bring back cutting-edge pieces for those who want them. "The number one thing is to give the client what they want, but educate them about what's out there," Birmingham explained. During this trip, they saw mixed metals, acrylic furniture, 3D wall dÊcor, curved lines, chaise lounges and so much more. Color is also coming back in a big way.
ACRYLIC FURNITURE Acrylic furniture was everywhere at Las Vegas Market. "We, of course, were drawn to calmer clears," the women of designingwomen2 said.

MIXED METALS "There was a time when gold wasn't allowed, and that's no longer the case," Carlson said. "What's really nice about the mixed metals is that people are still able to use the silver that we've done for them over the past few years and mix it with gold and even bronze. It just makes it more interesting," Birmingham continued.

3D WALL DECOR They noticed that "go-big-orgo-home," three-dimensional wall décor was very common at Las Vegas Market.

BISON GREEN The women of designingwomen2 saw all different shades of blue and green. "We found this barstool, and it's the perfect Bison green," Carlson said. It even has gold whipstitch detailing.
Trends Refined Other trends have been around for a while, but are becoming refined. For example, "The industrial look is still in, but not like it was—it's becoming more refined," Rasmus said. The same could be said about bohemian décor. They also saw the mixing of styles, which led to an eclectic, global-inspired effect.

Introducing Skapa Design & Consulting
Originally from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Sara Bekkerus is a mother of two, interior decorator and owner of Skapa Design & Consulting.
Sara Bekkerus
Bekkerus came up with the name, "Skapa Design" three years ago when she first started her business. "I had heard the word skapa before and it stuck in my head," she explained. "Then one day, I decided to look it up. It actually has a Scandinavian origin and means to design or to create, so I just thought it was meant to be," Bekkerus said. Though she hasn't always been an interior decorator, it was apparent from a young age that Bekkerus had a knack for design. While the other little girls were making snow angels, Bekkerus was mapping out floor plans for imaginary houses in the snow. Bekkerus laughed as she recalled this happy childhood memory. Bekkerus considers her style to be Scandinavianinspired. She loves clean lines, natural light and aged wood. For the first time, Bekkerus has invited us to look inside of one of the houses she has decorated and helped design: a family-inspired home located in Perham, Minnesota.

Meet the Homeowners
This home is quietly nestled next to Perham Lakeside Golf Course in. When the homeowners decided they wanted a custom build, Charlie and Megan Nelson chose Tomlinson Schultz to craft the place where they would raise their young daughters, Sammie and McKenna Nelson. Charlie Nelson and Mark Schultz of Tomlinson Schultz attended the same high school and have remained friends to this day. "The Nelson's were a true pleasure to work with. As for Sammie and McKenna, I have never witnessed two little girls make more construction workers smile," Schultz said. Then the Nelsons selected Bekkerus as their interior decorator. "Megan liked the idea of working with me because she learned that I have children the same age as hers," Bekkerus explained. Schultz later commented, "It was obvious that Sara was all in when it came to this project. She spent a considerable amount of time onsite and her attention to detail shines through in the finished product." After the Nelsons met consulted Schultz and Bekkerus, the four approached Tony Stoll of BHH Partners who served . "He really took all of our ideas and put them down on paper," Megan Nelson said.

Bekkerus knows from experience that kids bring home lots of projects, so she created a gallery wall to display the Nelson girls' artwork in the mudroom. "I have two kids too, so I know that every day they're bringing something home," she said.

When discussing the floor plan with Bekkerus, the Nelsons preferred a more traditional layout with all of the bedrooms on the second level. For the girls' rooms, Bekkerus wanted each space to reflect their personalities. However, she also wanted Sammie and McKenna Nelson to be able to grow with their spaces.

The Girl's Bathroom
Bekkerus wanted the girls' bathroom to be appropriate for a toddler or teenager. You might not know just from looking at it, but the room has a subtle princess theme. For example, the wall covering closely resembles the wallpaper in Elsa and Anna's rooms in the movie, "Frozen." The light fixture also reminds Bekkerus of the carriage from Walt Disney's "Cinderella." 74

Introducing Courtney Stanley of Northerly Goods
W
hen Courtney Stanley welcomed us into her South Fargo townhome, she had her most popular prints spread out across her kitchen table. Stanley is one of the makers featured at Unglued in Downtown Fargo and recently participated in her very first Unglued Craft Fest as a vendor. This month, we sat down with Stanley to discuss her journey as a watercolor artist and illustrator, which all began with a simple house portrait. Get to Know the Artist Stanley is originally from Madison, Wisconsin, and creativity runs in her family. "I would say I've always been pretty creative, but growing up, my parents would tell you I was more dramatic than artistic. My younger brother was the artist because he could– from an early age–just pick up a pencil and make really neat things," she said. Stanley has spent most of her married life in Idaho. In 2016, her husband took a job in the small town of LaMoure, North Dakota. Stanley was initially skeptical of the move because it meant leaving behind her career as an aesthetician in Boise. However, it inspired her to explore her artistic side. "We ended up really liking it in LaMoure and the people were amazing, but I had to find ways to kill my time," Stanley said.

A Simple House Portrait Though it would be some time before Stanley felt that she could identify as an artist, she slowly started sharing her experiments on social media. "I always thought, 'There are so many people who are so much better than me,'" Stanley explained. One of her friends then asked for a painting. "I didn't know what she wanted, but I knew she loved her house," Stanley said. That is what inspired her to begin painting house portraits. Since then, Stanley created an Etsy shop through which she has been commissioned to paint many house
portraits. Though she likes to paint pastoral farms, it is hard for her to pick a favorite house portrait because each one has sentimental value. "Hardly anyone has a house portrait painted for no reason. There's always some sort of a story to it. Some are kind of sad, some are happy. Other people just have a lot of pride in their home. I've done businesses. I've done a hotel in New York. I've done churches where people have gotten married. There have been some where it's, 'My grandparents built this house, this is the house I grew up in, this is our first house or this is the house we had our kids in.' There are so many things that make each house portrait special," Stanley said.
Stanley always sends customers the original copy of their house portrait and takes a photo of it to keep for herself.

With a Little Encouragement After a while, Stanley thought it would be fun to paint something other than house portraits. In the meantime, her husband was accepted into a graduate program at NDSU. This called for yet another move to Fargo. After living in Fargo for about a year, Stanley ventured into Unglued. "I'd heard a lot of people talk about the store. When I finally got to go in, it was a little intimidating at first because everyone was so cool," she revealed. Once she created a larger body of work, Stanley applied to sell her watercolor prints at Unglued under the name Northerly Goods. In February 2018, she participated in Unglued Craft Fest as a vendor for the very first time. "I was so excited when she [Ashley Morken] accepted me. Her encouragement with the store and the Craft Fest has really boosted my confidence," Stanley said. Her family has also been very supportive. After the 2018 Craft Fest, Stanley's husband is already looking forward to setting up a booth again next year.

Mountains of Inspiration Stanley draws inspiration from the outdoors, especially the mountains of Idaho. She has also been influenced by time spent living abroad in Russia, Germany and England. When asked to describe her style, Stanley told us that she recently asked her dad the same question. "I was asking my dad that a couple weeks ago, and he said, 'It's very warm,' but I don't know what that means. I think I would describe it as whimsical, rustic and maybe a little meditative. I don't know if that's more for me or the person looking at it, but that's how I feel about it. I really like folklore and folk art, so I pull things from that," Stanley said
These days, Stanley tells her husband that he can take his time writing his dissertation. "I love Fargo. Anytime I think about when we'll actually have to leave, I get all choked up. We're anxious to get out west, have some land and be in the mountains, but I'm not anxious to leave," Stanley said. Through her Etsy shop, Stanley has been able to connect with customers from as far away as Australia.

Cut back your old perennials and trim off any old flowers from last year. Add those cuttings to your compost pile or take them to your city's recycling drop sites. A Charming 1932 Cottage Remodel
REVISITED
A
fter a bout of misfortune last year, this lovely 1932 cottage was left with extensive water damage. Enter Jamie R. Swenson of Park Co. Realtors and Kyle Pieper of Pieper Shingling & Construction who gutted the interior down to the studs. In September 2017, Design & Living Magazine featured the before photos. Now, it's time to reveal the results of their labor of love.
Since our last visit to this property, the home has been purchased by Jane and Dave Dahlgren previously of Apple Valley, Minnesota. The Dahlgrens officially moved into their new house in December 2017 with their two cats. 88

AFTER
KITCHEN Before, it was hard to imagine what the kitchen would look like when finished. Now, it has modern amenities including stainless steel appliances and barn wood accents. However, the most dramatic change was the switch to an open floor plan.
BEFORE After they moved in, Jane Dahlgren's sister-inlaw helped organize the kitchen, which made unpacking a bit easier for the Dahlgrens. The first time the Dahlgrens set foot in the home, the remodel was still underway and the couple saw its hidden potential. By the time they closed, it was move-in-ready. Now, it is easy to see why anyone would want to live in this space.

DINING ROOM Although Swenson and Pieper gave the home some much-needed updates, they wanted to keep the home's original character intact. During the remodel, they found this built-in telephone cabinet, which they saved and incorporated into the new dining room. They were also able to restore the original fireplace and staircase.

Upstairs, Swenson and Pieper added more rustic wood accents to the ceiling in the hallway.
Upstairs, Swenson and Pieper repurposed an old door they found in the house as the door to the master closet, creating a unique spin on the classic sliding barn door. Best of all, the Dahlgrens love their new neighborhood, especially the mature trees lining the streets, and can't wait to make use of their outdoor space this summer.

n Saturday, March 10, vendors and guests convened at the Fargo Civic Center for the first ever Red Silobration Retreat hosted by Bobbi Jo and Todd Cody of The Red Silo. What they got out of it was a day full of fun and inspiration. We at Design & Living Magazine had the privilege of capturing the joy that permeated this event. The day began at 8:30 with coffee and shopping. Keynote speaker Rebecca Undem took to the stage at 9:30, followed by a fashion show by AJ Robert and Charmed Boutique, more shopping and live demonstrations from To The Core, Doubting Thomas Farm, Thunder Coffee and MilkMade. Guests were then served lunch and listened to the keynote's final remarks.
Bobbi Jo and Todd Cody served as hosts of the event.
Guests at the VIP table took home a copy of Undem's book along with several other goodies.
Jessica Christian and Holly Haggen attended the event as vendors representing their business, Block 44 Designs. The two interior decorators have an office located inside of The Red Silo, so of course, they were looking forward to participating in this event.
Brock Davis of Davis Designs was another one of the vendors at the Red Silobration Retreat. Although this is his first conference, he has participated in the street fair and sells his metal sculptures and signs through The Red Silo.

Pam Henricks of West Fargo and Patti Preston Harwood, North Dakota were VIP guests. "It's been a good day to be with a good friend," they said of the event.
Connie Bruse of Chalky & Company was a vendor as well. She teaches people how to stencil, glaze and distress hand-painted signs through workshops hosted at her farm. "I provide the wine and the chocolate, and you provide the people," she laughed.
Bobbi Jo and Todd Cody would like to thank all of the vendors and guests who made this event such a success. It is all because of you that they are able to do what they love and bring other people joy in the process.
Julie Brouse of Modern Renewal was also a vendor. She specializes in handmade jewelry, signs and all things repurposed. Brouse works out of Osage, Minnesota, and has a cottage at the Shady Hollow Flea Market in Detroit Lakes.
