This year, I am not ashamed to say that I started decorating for the holidays on November 9. When you spend the whole month visiting local shops and boutiques for work, it can be hard to resist the cheer. My favorite decorations are vintage like these ones from the White House Co., but this season, we here at Design & Living have embraced a global-inspired holiday theme. To me, that means lots of texture, pattern and natural elements. Consider this local shopping guide to be a North-Dakotan-take on the worldly design trend that has been everywhere in 2018. As you page through this issue, you may feel as if you are reading a coffee table book, rather than a complementary magazine. This is because of those who make the production of such a high quality publication possible in a short amount of time.

The Holiday Season

ovember came and went, and with it came the excitement of the holiday season. I'm usually not one to put up my tree until after Thanksgiving, but the inspiration in this month's issue had me decorating and celebrating mid-November. Not only have we already decorated our Christmas tree and hung up our stockings, but we have also started with the holiday baking and holiday scented candles. When I was growing up, no matter what age, my little brother and I always helped my mom decorate the tree with her favorite CD playing in the background. We may have teased her a little about this, but as an adult I have now found myself wanting the tradition of playing Christmas music while decorating with my own daughter.

uilding Trades Offer Successful Careers

You can make a great living as a professional in the construction trades. You really can! I’ve got two examples for you. Dustin Murray and Darrick Guthmiller followed similar paths to their success.

Dustin earned a degree in carpentry from a local tech school and started his company, Dustin Murray Construction a few years later. He specializes in remodeling, new construction framing and finish work. Dustin enjoys working for himself and being hands-on. Most days, you can find him on the jobsite, taking on whatever challenge awaits: setting trusses, building walls or trimming out a kitchen. Likewise, Darrick earned two degrees: one in construction technology and one architectural drafting and estimating technology from a local tech school. Today, Darrick manages his company’s office and designs house plans. He spends much of his time at his desk or meeting with clients. He is chief business officer at Kochmann Brothers Homes, Inc., a local custom homebuilding and remodeling company.

It's being widely reported across the nation that skilled trades people are in dire need, especially in the face of many natural disasters recently. The National Association of Home Builders has seen rising rates of open jobs over the past four years, and there is an inability for builders, remodelers and other trades to fill them. It's a concerning issue locally as well as employers struggle to find skilled workers. It’s important for parents, educators and students to consider construction or technical careers. At the very least, look at the potential for salary, job security and cost of education! A four-year, college education, and those related jobs, are not for everyone. We all have different abilities, preferences and personalities, and some of us will do better in a hands-on, active job.

Construction career wages in Minnesota average nearly $58,000 per year, and North Dakota average nearly $54,000 per year. Plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters and construction managers are needed to build new structures and update existing buildings. Locally, the construction industry has been stable and steady. It's a wonderful environment to get into a trade, grow it as a business or career, and leverage it to provide for a satisfying lifestyle, or to support a growing family. This year, Zandbroz Variety is making spirits bright with their unique display. We sat down with the owners of Zandbroz to find out what inspires them to go above and beyond during the holiday season.

THE FIVE SEASONS The window displays in Zandbroz are seasonal. You might think that would mean four different displays each year, but in reality, Zandbroz usually tries to flip their displays in February, April, June, August and November. Some larger retailers will even go so far as to flip their displays every two months. However, for small businesses and big box stores alike, expectations run the highest during November and December when customers are shopping for gifts. What better way to draw people into your store than with whimsical window displays? For Zandbroz, their purpose is not only to draw patrons in, but to brighten their spirits while doing so by giving their eyes something to linger on.

RECYCLING WITH A PURPOSE For more than 26 years, co-owner Rene'e Danz has been designing window displays for Zandbroz Variety in Downtown Fargo. As a self-described visual thinker, Rene'e likes to use unexpected objects in her designs. "You can get away with repeating something maybe twice, but it's not the same. What I do is recycle things," she shared. Ensuring that the materials in their displays can be repurposed is of the utmost importance to Zandbroz. After taking their windows down, hardly anything goes to waste. Instead, props are put in storage until they can be given new life in yet another display. As a result, Rene'e has built up quite the inventory over the years. However, you probably wouldn't be able to recognize them the second, third or even fourth time around due to the fact that they are utilized differently in each subsequent iteration.

MAKING SPIRITS BRIGHT Although she is a visual thinker, Rene'e usually has a saying or a theme that corresponds with her designs. For example, the theme of last year's holiday window display was "Eat, Drink & Be Merry," so she created sculptures out of paper plates and water bottles to correspond with the theme. This year, however, she wanted the holiday window display to feel a bit more modern and abstract.

"I wanted to make a completely different kind of statement this year," Rene'e said. To do so, she used tomato cages, tracing paper and netting to create the base for her design. She also draped lights throughout to literally illustrate the theme, "Making Spirits Bright."

GREAT EXPECTATIONS While Rene'e Danz is responsible for designing the window displays at Zandbroz, Josie and Shelley Danz help out with the in-store displays. "When Rene'e has an idea, I feel like you just have to go with it," Josie said. "You've got to trust her because it always turns out," Shelley added. Greg Danz, coowner of Zandbroz, said that his favorite thing about the holiday window displays is seeing everything come together.

LET YOUR HEART BE LIGHT Winter can feel especially dark for some. This is why we must appreciate those magical places where both the people and the atmosphere are warm and full of light. So, next time you're out running hectic errands, we encourage you to stop and take in the sights, including the window wonderland at Zandbroz Variety. The same goes for the displays in all local shops and boutiques. We promise that your heart will feel lighter for it.

Supply List -Spray Adhesive -Clear Glass Disc Ornaments - used 4" and 3.15" diameters -Design Master 24KT Pure Gold Spray Paint -Clear Glitter Sealer - Krylon Glitter Blast Clear Sealer -Rose Gold Fine Glitter -Dazzle-It 10/0 Czech Glass Seed Beads in Copper Mix -5/8" Velvet Ribbon in Blush by Sugar Paper -Masking or Painter's Tape -Feathers in your choice of color -Wooden Dowels or Chop Stick -Styrofoam board -Scissors

Step 1 | Tape off ornament Apply the tape at an angle towards the middle to bottom half of the ornament, leaving behind the area you want to add glitter and seed beads. Make sure that the tape aligns where the two ends overlap, to get a clean line. Step 2 | Spray Ornament with Spray Adhesive With using the spray adhesive it drys quickly so you need to apply the seeds beads and glitter as soon as possible. Thoroughly spray the exposed part of the ornament with spray adhesive. Step 3 | Apply Seed Beads Sprinkle the seed beads onto the adhesive until happy with the amount of beads. Step 4 | Sprinkle with Glitter Sprinkle liberally with the glitter. Continue working on both sides and bottom of the ornament until it is completely covered. Spray glittered area with clear sealer to prevent the glitter from flaking and fading. Set aside to dry. Step 5 | Spray Ornament Caps Remove the ornament caps and stick into a Styrofoam board. Spray caps with Design Master 24KT Pure Gold spray paint. Set aside to let dry. Step 6 | Remove Tape Once the clear sealer is dry carefully remove the tape. Step 7 | Insert Feathers into the Ornament Insert feathers into the ornament, using the dowel or chop stick to adjust and rearrange the feathers. Step 8 | Add Ornament Cap + Hanger Ribbon Insert the new gold ornament cap into the top of the ornament. Cut a 12" piece of velvet ribbon and insert it into the ornament cap, tie the ends into a knot.

Supply List -Clear Glass Ornament - I used 4" Diameter -MTN 94 Spray Paint in Poseydon Blue - Matte Finish -Design Master 24KT Pure Gold Spray Paint -Wooden Dowels -Styrofoam Board -White Paint Pen -5/8" Velvet Ribbon in Black by Sugar Paper -Scissors

Step 1 | Prep Ornament Remove the ornament caps. Place ornaments upright into box and place in an area protected from spray paint. Step 2 | Spray Top of Ornament Spray top with Poseydon Blue spray paint. You want light coats of spray paint to avoid paint runs. Step 3 | Flip Ornament While ornament is still wet, insert two dowels into ornament and carefully flip the ornament. Inserting the dowels into Styrofoam board. Step 4 | Spray Bottom of Ornament Spray the bottom and sides of the ornament with Poseydon Blue spray paint, completely covering ornament. Let dry. If needed, add another coat of paint and let dry. Step 5 | Spray Ornament Caps Stick ornament caps into styrofoam board. Spray caps with Design Master 24KT Pure Gold spray paint. Set aside to let dry. Step 6 | Add Stars Using the white paint pen, draw stars onto the ornament. Vary the placement and size of the stars. Step 7 | Add Ornament Cap + Hanger Ribbon Add Ornament Cap + Hanger Ribbon Insert the new gold ornament cap into the top of the ornament. Cut a 12" piece of velvet ribbon and insert into the ornament cap, tie the ends into a knot.

Meet Seth & Nicole Seth is the owner of Holden Restoration & Remodel, while Nicole is Director of Events and Facilities at NDSU Foundation and Alumni Association. In addition to running his own business, Seth is the drummer in a local band, The Human Element. The couple currently lives in Fargo with their two rescued huskies, Beta and Ramsey. When Seth and Nicole purchased their home, they had already planned on making renovations. However, those renovations soon turned into a complete remodel. In previous issues, we covered their second level and exterior transformations. This month, we decided to find out as much as we could about their new addition. The Old Kitchen The Holdens love to entertain, but they just didn't have the space in their old kitchen, which was cramped and full of old linoleum. Instead of simply renovating what was already there, Seth and Nicole decided to add on a new kitchen, bath and laundry room. Fortunately, they were able to use the old kitchen while working on the new addition, which was extremely convenient for the couple. "We literally never went without a kitchen," Seth said. Timeline Seth began making preparations for the new addition in 2015 by digging a hole for its foundation. After taking a break to build a new stucco garage in their backyard, Seth started framing in 2016, and the entire project was completed by spring 2017. On March 17 of that year, the Holdens hosted a Saint Patrick's Day brunch in their spacious new kitchen to celebrate. Old World Charm Because their house was built in 1918, the original rooms boasted beautiful woodwork and hardwood floors, which had been hiding underneath carpet for many years. Seth and Nicole knew they wanted the new addition to flow seamlessly into the original dining room. The way they accomplished this was nothing short of a miracle, although Seth will tell you that it was actually a carefully calculated feat. One World Flooring Seth was involved in renovating the former One World location in Downtown Fargo, which is now Front Street Taproom. While working on this project, Seth was able to salvage the original hardwood flooring that was almost disposed of and use it in the

addition. He measured the footprint of the new kitchen based on the square footage of reclaimed wood that was available. By the end of installation, the reclaimed floor boards were perfectly flush with the original floor boards of the 1918 home. "I was really nervous until it matched up. Out of everything in the addition, that is the thing that I'm most proud of." Seth explained. The flooring in their living and dining rooms was lighter in color, as is typical of Arts and Craft homes, but the reclaimed wood from One World did not match. Since the Holdens wanted the addition to feel like it was original to the house, they simply refinished both the original and reclaimed flooring. Trial and Error While Seth acted as the contractor whenever possible, Nicole tackled the design. "It was definitely a learning process. I was in charge of designing the kitchen, which was really hard because I'm not a designer by trade. There was a lot of trial and error," she shared. For example, off of the kitchen was to be a butler's pantry, but the couple had it plumbed as a laundry room just in case. Once they started installing the cabinets in their kitchen though, Seth and Nicole realized that they would not need the extra storage at all. Today, when standing in the Holden's addition, you would never guess that the rich floors, gleaming quartz countertops, classic subway tile backsplash and shaker-style cabinets were not original to the home. Seth and Nicole can now enjoy entertaining on their oversized island and have transformed their former kitchen into a den.

icture this: as the snow begins to fall over Downtown Fargo, you and your loved ones are bundled up warm and cozy in a wooden carriage lead by two horses clip clopping their way down Broadway. That is the just the whimsical experience that Bobbi Jo and Todd Cody of The Red Silo hoped to create when they partnered with Rusty K Ranch. For the past three years, the community has enjoyed this seasonal novelty in the weeks leading up to December 25.

ONCE AGAIN THIS YEAR The Red Silo and Rusty K Ranch are offering carriage rides in Downtown Fargo. Rusty K Ranch is a small ranch located 20 miles southwest of the FM area that is owned and operated by the Kraft family, and the Red Silo is a local business owned and operated by the Cody family. This novelty carriage ride experience is not only fun for the whole family, but also makes an especially romantic evening for couples. The entire route lasts about 30 minutes and starts at 12 Broadway N. Along the way, patrons pass landmarks such as the historic Fargo Theater and more illuminated by holiday lights. Bobbi Jo of The Red Silo recommends reserving your seats in advance to ensure that there is enough room for your party in the 16 seat carriage. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children. To reserve tickets, simply call or visit The Red Silo. The carriage will be in town on December 6, 13 and 20 and rides will be offered at 6:00, 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. on those evenings, depending on weather conditions.

OUR TIPS FOR YOU To make the most of your experience, this is what we here at Design & Living suggest you bring. Warm clothing: Bring your warmest winter coat, knit hat, mittens and woolen socks. An oversized scarf is also a mustâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;plaid or buffalo check preferred for inevitable photo ops! A camera: You, your loved ones and a horse and carriage in Downtown Fargo. This is major Christmas card material. Warm drinks: A large thermos full of hot cocoa or another similar beverage can be passed between loved ones to keep you feeling warm and fuzzy inside, despite the colder temps. Blankets: Rusty K Ranch provides blankets for during the ride, but you can make yourself feel even more at home with your favorite photogenic throw. Cheer: Sometimes, a sense of cheer is all it takes to make the season bright. Above all, make sure to enjoy the evening with your loved ones, photos or no photos!
