Top 5 Weekend Getaways This Summer
1 Outriders Under the Big Sky Fest In July, I am venturing out to Whitefish, Montana via Amtrak for arts and music festival, Under the Big Sky. I’m excited about acts like Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Jenny Lewis and Nikki Lane, but I’m equally as excited for the train ride out there and the scenery I’ll get to enjoy on the way.
PACK YOUR BAGS Dear Readers, If you know me, you know that I love a good weekend getaway. If there's a chance for my fiancée and me to get out of town for a little escape, we take it. We already have multiple regional weekend trips on the calendar! In putting together this issue, I really was reminded of how many treasures are just an hour or less away from us. While I will always be a cheerleader for Fargo-Moorhead, the allure of checking out these surrounding cities is powerful. Nothing makes you enjoy your own city as much as going away and finding yourself craving your usual brew from a

2 Faux Claires Last year I enjoyed heading to Eau Claire, Wisconsin for Eaux Claires music fest. This year, the festival is on hiatus, but one of the festival’s most beloved performers Francis and the Lights will be putting on a show in the Wisconsin town as a placeholder for the festival. Rumor has it, every ticket holder will get a meet-and-greet, so I’m pretty pumped.

I spent much of my November through March either at home or downtown. Now that the roads are less treacherous, I fully intend on getting out of my bubble! 3 A Weekend at Packsack At the Fargo Air Museum Celebrity Dinner and Auction in September, we were lucky enough to have bid on and won a trip to Packsack Canoe Trips and Log Cabins in Winton, Minn. We are excited to spend a quiet weekend in a rustic log cabin and on the water.
4 Shakey Graves & Dr. Dog at Surly One of my favorite musicians, Shakey Graves is playing a show at Surly Brewing Festival Field, and I’ve been looking forward to it ever since it was announced. Great beer and a favorite artist of mine? I’ll be there.

5 Biking in Rapid City Admittedly, I haven’t spent much time in South Dakota, but this summer I plan on changing that. At the end of May, I’ll be getting my motorcycle license, so a trip to the Sturgis area to bike shop is a must on my summer bucket list.

Walker
The city of Walker on Leech Lake is a charming, lowkey weekend getaway. Leech Lake is the third largest lake in Minnesota and is known for simply the best Walleye and Muskie fishing in the Midwest. Walker's picturesque downtown right down the street from the water has so many shopping and restaurant options, you never even have to leave a 5-mile radius to have a full Walker experience!
Friday 3 p.m. Check in Visit Leech Lake by staying right on the water at Chase on the Lake. Stay in one of their rooms with a balcony overlooking the water or opt for a whole condo on the property. Pet-friendly options are also available, so you won't have to worry about leaving your furry friend at home. The resort has its own private sandy beach with chairs and loungers, a marina with rentable boats, piers for fishing and watching the sunset and even a few firepits for late night s'mores roasting.
4 p.m. Take a dip If you don't feel like putting sunscreen on just yet, take a dip in their indoor pool and hot tub, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows looking to scenic greenery and a sauna.
5:30 p.m. Dinner on the patio Chase on the Lake's restaurant, The 502, has a full indoor bar and restaurant, but tonight, opt to dine on their wrap-around patio to dry off after your dip in the pool. This lakeside dining spot has a number of options, from hearty dishes to lighter fares and an impressive line up of specialty elixirs to wash it all down.
7 p.m. Bowl the Night Away Beneath the restaurant at Chase on the Lake is Chaser’s Alley, a two-lane bowling alley. Finish your first night in town with a few games of bowling, an activity many of us don't get to enjoy much anymore these days. For an additional charge, cocktails and catering are available for in-the-lane service...how VIP!

Walker
Saturday 9 a.m. Perk Up Start the day right with coffee and breakfast at Walker Bay Coffee Co. This mom-and-pop style cafe has a small-town charm and big flavor. Order a hot cinnamon roll and one of their many specialty coffee drinks and settle in with the local newspaper for the ultimate start to your morning.
2 p.m. Come Sail Away Book a two-hour guided sailing excursion with Sailing Daze. Hop on their classic sailing vessel and embrace a beloved lake tradition. Sailing Daze’s captain Bruce Johnson will take you on his vessel, “Knota Lotta,” through the waters of Walker Bay, expertly guiding you through the beautiful landscape. This is truly an unforgettable experience.
10 a.m. Explore Downtown
4:30 p.m. Stretch Your Legs
Nothing beats the charm of a midwestern small-town downtown strip. Be sure to stop by Walker General Store for an old fashioned feel, Reeds Family Outdoor Outfitters for any outfitting you might have forgotten to pack and Northern Exposure for great gifts. Head over to Peculiar Painter on Front Street to peruse local art and pick up supplies to create your own works.
After some hours on the water, stretch your sea legs with a hike or bike ride. Walker has many trails, including northern Minnesota’s oldest paved trail, Heartland Trail. On the trail, enjoy views of local wildlife and native flowers.
12 p.m. Lunch at a Staple While you’re downtown, grab lunch at a Walker staple, Benson’s Eating and Drinking Emporium. Located in the heart of downtown Walker, this is the perfect stopover for a mid-day food break. The menu is quite extensive, so be ready to spend some time perusing the options and deciding what to order.

6:30 p.m. Dinner at Lucky Moose Bar & Grill End your Saturday night at Northern Lights Casino. But before you arrive at the casino, fill up on a satisfying dinner. On the route down to the casino is Lucky Moose Bar & Grill, a cabin-inspired eatery. The comfort foods on this menu feel like home in their cozy environment.

8 p.m. Casino Night Once filled up, head down the water to Northern Lights Casino for a night of testing your luck. This Casino-Hotel destination offers to the public: slot machines, blackjack tables and private poker rooms. For the kids, there is even an arcade room outside the casino’s main floor. If you plan your visit to Walker right, you might even catch one of the casino’s concerts, with lineups this summer featuring Ja Rule, R&B quartet 112 and Charley Pride.
Sunday 8 a.m. Rise and Shine Right in the parking lot of Chase on the Lake is Java Loon Coffee and Gifts. Start your morning by grabbing some coffee, a light breakfast and some snacks for later. While you’re there, grab a Chase on the Lake mug or a sweatshirt to take home as a souvenir from a weekend wellenjoyed.
9 a.m. Go Fish Spend your morning on a four-hour fishing trip with Leisure Outdoor Adventures. Highly rated Leisure Outdoor Adventures guides show you the local hot spots to help ensure a successful fishing trip. With their help, you’ll be able to snag some Minnesota fish to take back home with you, your guide will even fillet and package your catches for you.

June 9 Strive for your personal best and enjoy the beautiful and rejuvenating Leech Lake area at the Walker Triathlon (formerly Chase the Police Triathlon), hosted by the Walker Area Community Center (WACC). The natural setting of the Leech Lake/ Northwoods area is perfect for a triathlon!
Moondance Jammin’ Country
June 20-22 The Moondance Jam’s country cousin is throwing its 13th year of southern-infused tunes. Headliners this year include Neal McCoy, Kane Brown and Brothers Osborne.

12:30 p.m. Quality BBQ Before you hit the road, dine on one last meal in Walker. The Piggy BBQ Of Walker is one of the hottest BBQ joints in the area. The Piggy often sells out of their famous goods, so be sure to get in before the lunch rush. Freshness and high-quality products are of utmost importance to them, so they don’t mass produce their offerings in large amounts.
July 18-20 Lynyrd Skynyrd, Train, The Goo Goo Dolls and more! Minnesota’s largest rock-n-roll concert and Walker’s favorite weekend happens this year for its 28th year. Be one of the thousands who travel to Walker for this special weekend of music.

Bemidji
There's an old folktale that Lake Bemidji was created out of the footprint of Paul Bunyan. True or not, Bunyan's footprint is still making an indelible mark on the first city on the Mississippi that was named the best Minnesota town in 2017 by Minnesota Monthly.
Friday 3 p.m. Check-in While there are many places to stay on the lake, if you're looking for a romantic getaway, you should check out the Lake Bemidji B&B. However, if you're looking for something historically Bemidji, you should check out Ruttger's Birchmont Lodge. The first cabins were built by George Cochran in 1915. (In fact, cabins 1, 2, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15 and 23 are the original cabins.) Now under new ownership, the resort still offers many different accommodations, dining options, fishing and water activities.
6 p.m. Time to eat! Some Bemidji staples include Turtle River Chophouse, Sparkling Waters and Mi Rancho but if you're looking for authentic Italian dining, you can't go wrong with Tutto Benne, a quaint eatery in Downtown Bemidji. There, you can enjoy dishes like wild snow crab ravioli, rabbit and pappardelle or a New York strip.
8 p.m. Local brews It's just a couple block stroll from Tutto Benne to Bemidji Brewing, which has an extensive tap list with local beers ranging from a German Blonde, Oud Bruin Kriek and Maple Syrup Barrel Aged Double Porter. If you're still hungry, they do have a full food menu, so you might enjoy their brewery nachos paired with a German Blonde or Winter IPA as a little snack.

Bemidji
Saturday 9 a.m. Get Your Exercise In It’s time to burn off those calories from last night’s meal. Head down to the Bemidji State University Rec Center or Lake Bemidji State Park and rent some paddle boards, bikes kayaks or canoes. There’s a bike trail that goes around most of Lake Bemidji with paths that range from four miles to 35 miles. It’s sure to be a good time for everyone.
Dragon Boat Festival
Noon Lunchtime You’re bound to be hungry after all that exercise so it’s time to grab a quick lunch before getting onto the rest of the day. Some good quick lunch spots include Paul Bunyan Sub Shop and Dave’s Pizza but we recommend loading up on some delicious BBQ at Fozzie’s Smokin Bar BQ. There, you’ll be able to find ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, egg rolls and more.
1 p.m. Time for education It can’t be all fun and games. If you’re looking for a little education, some of the go-to spots are the Watermark Art Center, Beltrami County History Center, Paul Bunyan Playhouse Theater (try and catch “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Footloose,” their summer musicals) or Suzy and Hondo’s School of Dance. The Headwaters Science Center is also a popular family destination as they have lots of interactive activities for kids.

5 p.m. Dinner time For dinner, why not try out one of the new places in town with Bar 209? Also located in the heart of Downtown Bemidji, Bar 209 is in a completely remodeled building and has a unique menu that features numerous unique takes on burgers and sandwiches. If you’re feeling really adventurous, might we suggest the Haba-Haba burger, which features a habanero-jalapeño butter basted burger, simple cabbage habanero slaw, pepper jack cheese and red pepper aioli.
7 p.m. Live music One of the most unique ambiances in Bemidji is Brigid’s Pub. This traditional Irish pub features a full food menu, extensive tap list and also has plenty of games to keep the kids entertained. They’re also kid-friendly until 10 p.m. and feature live music from local musicians every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Sunday 9 a.m. Breakfast Again, there are lots of breakfast joints to enjoy, including Red Stu Breakfast Bar, Minnesota Nice and Wild Hare Bistro and Coffee Company. However, you might want to check out Raphael’s Bakery Cafe for their delicious menu full of breakfast staples like omelets and french toast or enjoy something from their bakery. They must be good because their bakers arrive at 1 a.m. to start preparing for their day.
11 a.m. Shop ‘til you drop No trip is complete without a little bit of shopping. In fact, you can just stroll down Third Street in Downtown Bemidji to find a variety of local boutiques, including Yellow Umbrella, Compass Rose and Patterson’s Clothing. You also don’t want to miss Bemidji Woolen Mills on the edge of downtown. This 97-year company is now on its fourth generation owner and features a wide variety of men and women’s products that will make you look like a true Northwoodsman.
1 p.m. Dessert! Sure, you can enjoy lunch but why not skip it for some delicious dessert from local staples Big River Scoop or Chocolates Plus before hitting the road. Chocolates Plus has been in Bemidji for over 25 years and specializes in hand made chocolates, fudge and truffles.

June 15 at 7:30 a.m. Come celebrate Bemidji as a bike-friendly community with this festival for everybody that will take you around Lake Bemidji and features food, music, activities and plenty of photo ops.
Bemidji Bird City Celebration
June 22 The Audubon MN Society has designated Bemidji as “Bird City” so come over to celebrate this birdfriendly community, all in Paul Bunyan Park.
Bemidji Jaycees Water Carnival
July 3-7 The whole community comes out every year for this fun carnival that takes place right next to Lake Bemidji. This year is sure to be a not miss, as it’s the 75th anniversary.
Dragon Boat Festival
July 31-August 3 Another fun annual event, the Dragon Boat Festival, is four days of fun for the entire family and features great food, music, kid’s activities, parade, cultural performances and, of course, the Dragon Boat race.

Detroit Lakes
Arguably the most notorious of the Lakes Country destinations, Detroit Lakes is a guaranteed good time. Only an hour from Fargo, it’s also an easy day trip to explore the city and all it has to offer.
Friday 2 p.m. Check in Arrive in Detroit Lakes and check into your lodging for the weekend. There are more than 450 rooms available at hotels, motels, campgrounds and a resort are all located in the city limits of Detroit Lakes. This weekend, opt for an upscale property with the Best Western Premier The Lodge on Lake Detroit. The Lodge includes extras such as hot breakfast, all rooms with a view of Big Detroit Lake and a fireplace lobby with a bar and live jazz music.
3 p.m. Learn and Stock Up Head up the road to the Detroit Lakes Public Library, one among the Carnegie libraries on the national register of historic places. Peruse their selection and pick out a book to enjoy while relaxing on the lake over the weekend. While in the area, maybe stop by Becker County Museum to learn about the past through their displays and extensive files. There are many stores in this area, so use this time to pick up anything you might have forgotten to pack (don’t forget sunscreen and a towel!)

5:30 p.m. Dinner Time It’s time for your first dinner in town. Drive about 15 minutes south into the country to Spanky’s Stone Hearth. Whether you opt for a cozy seat by the stone hearth fireplace, a seat overlooking Rose Lake or a spot on the outdoor deck, this restaurant is charming in every corner. When available, Spanky’s strives to use locally grown and sourced ingredients, making it an authentic local spot, all around.
7 p.m. Back to the Lodge Spend the rest of your night back at the lodge, soaking up all they have to offer. From live music in the lounge to special events throughout the season, there is always something going on. Grab a drink or two for dessert at the lodge’s LoLa D’s Bar with views of the sunset. The Lodge’s two-story 2-story lakefront, fireside lobby which overlooks Big Detroit Lake is the perfect setting to watch the sunset on your perfect first day of a weekend getaway. Before or after watching the sunset with cocktails, be sure to check out their indoor pool and hot tub area to wrap up the night. For a real “at the lake” feel, enjoy the handmade schools of ceramic tile fish embedded in the plaster at the bottom of the pool. Warm up and wind down with their therapeutic whirlpool while surrounded by cattails and other authentic, Minnesota foliage that decorates the pool room.
2 p.m. Shop ‘Til You Drop Don’t cut your day on the water short, but do make sure to head downtown to some shops before they close up for the day! First stop at Shady Hollow Flea Market on Hwy 59 South, open weekends Memorial Day-Labor Day. For over 40 years, this flea & artisan market has been home to antiques, junk, new, repurposed and handmade items... something for every member of the family to love. Next head to the heart of downtown, from Washington Avenue to Washington Square Mall. There are so many options in this area, like Mainstream Boutique, Becker Pet & Garden, Vintage & Vogue, Red Pine Quilt Shop, The Nines and Red Willow.
Saturday 8 a.m. Rise and Shine For a breakfast twist on the lake, go to Hub 41 by the beach for Pancake Tacos. Start your morning right here and learn why Lake Time Magazine named it the Best New Restaurant in Minnesota. Prepare for your big day ahead by chowing down at a seat on their rooftop with views of the city beach.
10 a.m. Get to the Water How can we only suggest one way to spend your time on the water at DL? Carve out a chunk of your Saturday to embrace all types of things this city offers. Need some exercise? Take a stroll on a mile of sandy beach right on the water. Need a boat, kayak, wave runner or paddle boat? Rentals are available all summer long at J & K Marina, located along the city beach. Fishing for panfish or walleye? Better your chances of a fish fry by using the services of fishing guides. More than 400 area lakes give you and your family plenty of options for swimming, paddle boarding and jumping off the dock. Less than 10 minutes east of Detroit Lakes, take a leisurely inner tube float down the Otter Tail River. For some of the finest inland diving, Tri-State Diving provides equipment rentals and guides.
6 p.m. Dinner with a View What could be better than a walleye dinner paired with a glass of wine and a lake view of the setting sun? Head back up near where The Lodge is and have a meal at Fireside of Detroit Lakes. Established in 1948, The Fireside is an area icon with house-made, hand-cut foods and a stylish menu of both classic and eclectic fares. Their chic dining room is built around an open-air antique charcoal grill with an unforgettable view of Lake Detroit.
8 p.m. Drinks with a View Finish your evening just up the road with more lake views and drinks at microbrewery and bar, Lakeside Tavern. This laid-back bar offers the perfect way to relax after your action-packed day.

Detroit Lakes Plan Your Trip
Any weekend you choose is going to be a good time, but if you’re looking for a specific event going on in town, here are a few events to catch: Festival of Birds
May 15-18 You don’t want to waste any time in birders’ paradise. More than 275 species of birds are found in Becker County. Avid birders flock here each spring for the annual Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds, you won’t wanna miss out.
Street Faire at the Lakes
Sunday 9 a.m. Coffee and a Treat For a hip start to your day, head to Washington Avenue to find La Barista Restaurant. Order a quiche or a breakfast panini and decide which caffeinated beverage you want from their extensive drink menu. From light to dark roasts, to coffee specialties. Highlights include a Mexican Mocha, Snickers Latte or a Blueberry Muffin Latte.
10:30 a.m The Great Outdoors Don't waste your last morning in DL! There are literally tens of thousands of acres of nature in the Detroit Lakes area to hike, take a scenic drive or do some bird and nature watching. Some favorite nature spots include Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge with a Visitor Center (and 40,000 acres of nature and wildlife!), Detroit Lakes Wetland's Prairie Marsh Trail, Dunton Locks County Park with a scenic wooden bridge and shelters for a picnic, Sucker Creek Preserve and Detroit Lakes City Park next to the historic Pavilion and City Beach. For a bolder option, if you're a mountain bike enthusiasts looking for scenic trails to heart-thumping steep slopes and switchbacks, you'll want to include Detroit Mountain Recreation Area and Maplelag Resort in your plans today. When you're worn out, it's time to return home.

One hundred and twenty-five juried artists set up their paintings, sculptures, pottery, jewelry and other first-class art. Friday 2 p.m. Check-In While technically in Ottertail, Thumper Pond is a great place to lay your head while visiting this area. A full resort, Thumper Pond has a variety of options available to complete any desired trip, they even have pre-set packages like the Romance Package (King Whirlpool suite complete with a bottle of sparkling wine with chocolate covered strawberries) and the Stay-and-Play Package for golf lovers. Saturday 8:30 a.m. A Morning Downtown Start your morning off right with another trip to the small-town downtown strip in Perham. Fuel up for the day at the quaint Gathering Grounds Coffee Shoppe. Located in a 100-year-old building, this two-story charming establishment has been satisfying downtown Perham for over 20 years now. While downtown, find the Waves of Discovery Mural at the corner of Main Street and First Ave. Made by artist Cindee Lundin, this massive mural is made of carved concrete and includes elements of agates, fossils, fused glass, and mosaics. Designed to encourage interaction among viewers, there are over 50 items hidden among the panels of the mural to seek and find. As a public art project, the Waves of Discovery mural was fundraised by local businesses and individuals interested in having a community wide piece of art that everyone could enjoy.

11 a.m. Berries on the Farm Spend your morning picking your own fresh berries out at Otter Berry Farm. This family-oriented ‘you-pick’ berry farm is located right around Rush Lake. Enjoy the scenery and even greet to some of the farm animals they have on the grounds, like their sheep, goats and horses (regularsized and mini!)
1 p.m. The Best Chinese Food in the Area After some time on the farm, head back to town for a quick lunch at Jin Hu. Raved about as one of the most delicious Chinese restaurants in the area, Jin Hu is a Perham cornerstone. Known for its modern interpretation of classic dishes and its insistence on only using highquality fresh ingredients, Jin Hu is a great spot to eat in or order to go!
2:30 p.m. Get on the Water! Spend the rest of your Saturday as you should in Lakes Country...on the water! Options of how to spend this time are endless. Be adventurous and stop into Gene’s Sport Shop to get a local recommendation for a fishing guide or take it slow and blow up a raft to float on the water. There are plenty of public access points all over, so feel free to settle at one or bounce around and get the most out of your lake adventures.
7 p.m. Dinner at Pine Island Fish Co. After a long day of being out and about, come hungry to Pine Island Fish Co. Fresh local ingredients with specialization in seafood and unique flavors, it’s sure to satiate your hunger. Pick up some award-winning Minnesota-made cheese and even grab a pre-made gift basket, if you can’t decide on which delicious blocks to choose from. Be sure to stock up on enough to bring home with you to enjoy even while not at the lake. Before leaving town, be sure to stop by Ma’s Little Red Barn for some coffee and/or ice cream to enjoy on the road back home. If you’re a smooth driver, even grab one of their beautiful floral arrangements to display back at home, just don’t spill it on the car seats!
Turtle Fest
June 12-16 Each June, the Perham community comes together to celebrate summer. Like most communities, their summer festival is based around one of their local icons – which just happen to be turtles. Turtle Fest features a wide variety of events and activities to suit the whole family!
Rib Cook-Off
June 22 Each year, cookers from around the region gather for a grilling show in Perham. Each team has the opportunity to face off in a rib AND a chicken competition. Preliminary judges conduct a blind taste test for each entry and send the top six to the final round of judges. After another round of blind taste testing, the winners are confirmed. The event is open to the public. People are encouraged to come to chat with the cookers during the day – they might just share their secret recipes!
East Otter Tail County Fair
July 15-28 Each year, Perham is the host of the East Otter Tail County Fair. They bring clean, family-friendly fun with the small-town feel. Join in at the carnival, walk through the exhibits, enjoy the evening event and check out the Showmanship Livestock. There is so much to do and see at the County Fair!

The Alexandria Lakes area is home to more than 350 lakes, plus shopping, dining, museums and the state’s largest winery! For a wide variety of activities and events, Alexandria is a safe bet for a full weekend of fun.
Friday 3 p.m. check-in Arrowwood Resort and Conference center has a variety of housing options, depending on what kind of weekend you want and whom you are bringing along with you. Choose from guest rooms or a full townhome or cottage if you’re bringing a larger party, or just want your space (hello honeymoon cottage!) At Arrowwood, you can enjoy a whole weekend without having to leave the resort (although we do recommend you explore the whole town.) From golf at their 18-hole Atikwa Championship Golf Course to their indoor Big Splash Waterpark to their Darling Reflections Spa, they have it all. The Sugar Shack
With as many lakes as there are in Alexandria, there are almost as many restaurant patios. Watch the sun begin to set over the water and enjoy some dinner in the breeze. On the grounds of Arrowwood Resort is the Deck Bar & Grill’s beautiful and spacious patio. In the summer there is often live music on the patio, too, so before you dine, check and see if there will be entertainment alongside your meal. Top off your dinner with cookies or hand dipped ice cream from The Sugar Shack.

Join in on the “SKÅL Crawl,” Minnesota’s first wine, liquor and beer trail, featuring Carlos Creek Winery, Panther Distillery and Copper Trail Brewery. Start your crawl at Copper Trail Brewing and purchase your $15 pass, which includes $2 off each location’s sampling, a tasting glass and t-shirt. This pass can be used over any period of time, so we suggest starting at the brewery on your first night, since it is open until 11 pm, whereas the other two locations close at 6 p.m.

Saturday 10 a.m. Tour the waters Rent a boat from the resort marina and explore the Chain of Lakes. Start at Lake Darling (where the resort is) and make your way around to Lake Carlos, Lake Le Homme Dieu, Lake Geneva and Lake Victoria. If you want to try your hand at fishing, Lake Darling’s clear waters are full of walleye, largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill, northern and more. Bring your own supplies, or rent them from the resort. For a more structured adventure, contact one of the area’s many fishing guides to show you the ropes of the local waters.
1:30 p.m. Dock up for Lunch Once you’re feeling warm from the sun, dock up and have lunch at one of the many lakeside bars and restaurants, like Zorbaz or the brand new Lure Lakebar, both on Lake Le Homme Dieu.
3 p.m. Dry off and Get Shopping It’s never good to spend TOO much time in the sun. After a full morning on the water, take to dry land for some shopping. Alexandria’s downtown is full of enchanting shops and unique finds. Score some antiques at Yesterdays’ upscale collection or explore three levels of treasures at Now & Then Antiques. Shop more modern findings at Kindred People or Flourish Boutique, and even find cute goods for the kids at Little Darlings Children’s Boutique.
5:00 p.m. Dinner is Served The Garden Bar on 6th is downtown’s best spot for fresh and healthy dining. This restaurant’s colorful dishes range from a Mediterranean Zucchini Saute to Center Cut Sirloin to Falafel Medallions. Compliment your meal with one of their many signature cocktails. Their Lavender Lemondrop or Cucumber & Elderflower Gimlet are just refreshing enough for a warm summer’s day.
7:30 p.m. Catch a Show Drive about 12 minutes north of downtown to support local theater with the 59th season of shows at Theatre L’Homme Dieu. 10 a.m. Bike the Trail Head over to Jake’s Bikes to rent some wheels to cycle the famous Central Lakes Trail. Enjoy the trail and even bike down to Kensington Runestone Historical Marker for some local history. This trail spans from Fergus Falls to Osakis and was built on an abandoned railroad line, so the paved path is flat and passes through some beautiful landscapes.
2 p.m. Beach and Brews Spend some of the afternoon soaking up in sun at one of the many public beaches. Before leaving town, be sure to stop by Copper Trail Brewing to use your punch from your SKÅL Crawl and pick up some cans to take back home.

Beyond a unique selection of reads, they also offer bookbinding and repair services. For an eclectic second-hand experience, stop by The Tin Ceiling, a store with cute displays and is self-described as “A Taste of Honey, A Touch of Class, & Lots of Funk!” Maybe bring home some gifts for your household with Rustic Cabin Decor’s selection of home goods. And quilter or not, you must stop by Monika’s “Grandma and Grandpa shop” that is a quilter’s paradise.

Meet the Black Student Association (BSA) of NDSU, a group of stellar students making the campus a safer and more inclusive place for people from every walk of life! They have helped me tremendously in making me feel like I belonged on the NDSU campus. I’m excited to have been able to talk with President Kweku Amusah. I am forever grateful to have my BSA family as a support system in my life.

News of the POC was brought to BSA by word of mouth but we haven’t been able to really get familiar with that organization yet. We are aware of their purpose and goals for the diverse people of the FM area and we plan to really involve ourselves with their program in the upcoming years.

The Black Student Association had been inactive for a few years. It was reactivated by our former president Michael Samuel fall 2017. The mission of the Black Student Association is to help enhance the college experience for minority students by providing support socially and academically, along with informing students about social problems that minorities face in society.

That, unfortunately, does not allow me to build a career here in the FM area, but I plan to still be very invested with our BSA organization here as well as the newly introduced POC organization. The goal of graduated alumni is to make sure we are still offering services to this BSA and make sure it only grows stronger. 7) What would you tell to your freshman self before starting college? Make a plan. Nothing needs to be finalized, but you need a plan for everything. Whether it’s your morning routine, what you need to do in a day and when or how to study for assignments and exams, it is extremely important to have a plan because scrambling causes even more stress. An example I would give based on what I have been doing is to wake up early, work on developmental tasks such as reading or getting exercise, spend your day knocking down all your tasks hour by hour and spend your evenings taking care of yourself, whether it’s stretching before bed or simply making a plan for the next day. here do you begin in reducing that stress that seems so prevalent with the chaotic and busy lives we all find ourselves in nowadays? With your physical state directly affecting your mental state and vice versa, it takes a dual approach in finding that better mental clarity and energy needed to make the most of each day. Recently, I decided to take in for the first time a few of the more unknown gems in the FM area that are great for alleviating stress.

My overall experience at Glacial Peak Cryotherapy and talking with owner Pam Bradow was uniquely awesome. I started the adventure by hopping into the full body cryotherapy tank, which, believe it or not, I was pretty excited to try. The full three minutes allowed in the tank took the surroundings down to -240 F degrees, and as crazy as it sounds, wasn’t nearly as cold as spending an hour blowing snow in January. In fact, it was quite invigorating, and I can very easily see why this is considered such a great practice for reducing inflammation and rebooting your metabolic system.
After warming up, which only took a couple minutes, I hopped onto the table for a cryofacial and Normatec session while Pam informed me of the history and science behind the treatments and how she started her business after going through treatments herself following a bad car accident. After getting borderline frozen and pleasantly squeezed harder than I ever have by the Normatec sleeves, there was definitely an overall feeling of relaxation, similar to when you’re about two cocktails deep. I know this; it didn’t take me long when I got home to be out cold.

While mindlessly floating and drifting in and out of sleep and consciousness as to what was going on around me, it really made me come to two realizations. The first being where I carry stress in my body. I could immediately identify tense areas and mentally walk myself through relaxing them. The second being how many external stimuli we’re constantly bombarded with on a daily basis and how hard it is to completely calm your body, even in the absence of it.
After getting out of the tank, it felt as if I was having an out of body experience. As I sat in the lobby afterward for a few minutes, I honestly felt like I physically wasn’t really there as my body and senses began to slowly take in everything around me once again. In looking to reduce stress, keep in mind that it requires work in both the physical and mental arenas. As you devote time to both rest and relaxation, your body will better respond. As you get more active and push yourself physically, it will bring about a more ideal mental state and elevated self-confidence.

A classic on the cocktail menu is the Nergori, made from with equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth. Mezzaluna mixologist Max Parker takes this timeless and refreshing cocktail and elevates it with a carbonated twist. This recipe produces a single serving, but feel free to multiply ingredients and bottle up multiple servings to keep all summer long.
Carbonated Negroni Fragola 1 oz Bluecoat Gin 1 oz Strawberry-infused Campari 1 oz Sweet vermouth 2 oz Water
Combine gin, Campari, sweet vermouth and water. Before the next step of carbonation, make sure to chill the mixture. The CO2 of carbonation reacts to a chilled mixture much better. Once appropriately chilled, use a home carbonator (like a SodaStream) and follow its instructions for adding carbonation. Once bubbly, bottle and cap it right away. If you're pouring into a glass to enjoy, garnish with a sliced strawberry and an orange twist.

To make the Strawberryinfused Campari, soak 4 cups of hulled and sliced strawberries in one bottle's worth of Campari. After about 24 hours, strain the strawberries out and you are left with a sweet batch of Campari to use for this recipe or any other fruitinfused drink your heart desires.
Bottling the drinks up in individual, capped bottles allows for an easy drink to grab out of the fridge. Enjoy on the patio, take to the lake in a cooler or spice up the local block party. Make a large batch all at once and be set for your next few festivities.
Carbonation from a SodaStream adds an extra summery touch. “I think negronis are great summer cocktails, and I wanted to make it even more summery with the carbonation. The end result is really fun,� said Parker.

W
ith food being one of our means for survival, food preservation became paramount in the evolution of human beings. Preserving food is the idea of getting the total use of the food product before the onset of spoilage.
Most of civilization had to deal without refrigeration until somewhere between the 18th and 20th century. Before that, there was a lot of experimentation to see what worked and what didn’t work to preserve the food, I’d like to thank all of those who had to bear the ramifications of finding out what didn’t work. The basic idea of preserving is to either slow down the growth of microorganisms or to kill them altogether. Many of the techniques that were used are still used today, including refrigeration, freezing, drying,

salting, canning, pickling, dehydration, fermentation and many more. In the Midwest, the most popular preservation technique is to can your food, no matter what it is. Whether it’s raspberry jam, green beans or eggs, you can find cans of something buried away in a pantry or basement. When canning things, you’re boiling the contents of the can to kill all of the bacteria, as well as to seal the can to prevent any new bacteria from coming in. Since the can or jar is now sterilized, it will not spoil. But once the can or jar is opened, bacteria can enter and start to attack the food, so once it is opened, it needs to be refrigerated to slow the growth of microorganisms.
At the restaurant, we use a lot of the preservation techniques, but fermentation has to be our favorite to use. Fermentation is a little different than the rest of the techniques. With fermentation, you’re transforming the food with the use of microorganisms rather than killing them off. The true definition of fermentation is the process by which a microorganism converts sugar into another substance in the absence of oxygen. When a product is fermented, the overall taste gets heightened and transformed into a more delicious product. With summer getting close, take some time to collect your favorite vegetables and fruits to can so that during the cold dreary months of winter you can taste a little bit of summer.
Canned Marinated Peppers
Yields 6-8 16 oz. Jars
Ingredients
• 8 pounds roasted red bell peppers • 1 cup olive oil • 100 percent pure sea salt
Pickling Solutions • • • • • •
2 cups lemon juice 4 cups white vinegar 8 tablespoons 100 percent pure pickling salt 1 teaspoon dried oregano, per jar 1 cup red onions, sliced 8 whole garlic cloves, peeled
Directions 1. For the pickling solution, bring water, salt and vinegar to a boil and then cool. 2. Place an equal amount of onions and garlic cloves into the jars. Add oregano. 3. Pack jars tightly with peppers up to the curve of the jar. 4. Ladle pickling solution into the jars, just enough to just cover the peppers. 5. Place on lids and process. Either boil for 2.5 hours or use a pressure canner for 15 minutes.
Lacto-Fermented Fresno Hot Sauce
Yields 2 Mason Jars
Ingredients • • • • •
4 cups Fresno peppers, chopped 8 garlic cloves, smashed 4 cups water 2 teaspoons salt 2 fresh bay leaves
Directions 1. Place peppers, garlic and bay leaves into jars. 2. Heat up water and salt together, bring to a boil and cool. 3. Pour over peppers 4. Cover loosely with lids and place at room temperature to sit for 3-4 days, making sure to stir the liquid every day to prevent mold from forming. 5. The mix should turn cloudy. When it does, blend it in a blender until smooth, then strain. You can ferment it up to two weeks at room temperature to develop more flavor. 6. Transfer to another bottle and cover tightly. Store in the refrigerator for several months.

Tell us a bit about yourself: I’m from good ol’ Waubun, Minn. I met my high school sweetheart there and decided I wanted to annoy him forever, so we did that thing where you get married and have kids. I do work outside of Little Ditty! I work at our local Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center where I hang out with kiddos. I also work at Beautiful Junque and get a taste of a brick and mortar boutique business. Plus, I’m always trying to keep up with my twin five-year-olds. Life is busy. What do you make under Little Ditty? Most people know me for my small snarky signs that are known to give you a good laugh. Customizable magnet signs have been a hot item for me. Last year, I launched my card/print line, which has been really fun to share. Plus, I’m hoping

to launch a new release here come May, so stay tuned for that. What is one of your most favorite items you have made? I’ve been loving my customizable magnets. I just love seeing what people choose to put on them and love that I’m helping share that inside joke to their friends and family. It’s been super rewarding seeing those blossom. What is your snarkiest saying you’ve used so far?! I love the reactions from people when they read my “Bootycall: A shout from the bathroom letting you know it’s time to go wipe someone’s butt.” What are your most essential tools? 1. Coffee pot 2. Silhouette Cameo 3. Vinyl weeding pen (best thing ever).
How has your business evolved over the years since the beginning? Oh man. I really didn’t know what I was expecting when I started this business. I just went on a whim and decided to go big or go home and went for it. I started with any custom order I could get until I found my niche and went from there. Now I get to spread laughter all over the United States. So rewarding! What is a word that best describes you? Awkwardlyawesome. Can that be a word?
Where can people find your work this summer? This summer, I’m going to be taking it easy to hang out with my babies before they head off to kindergarten. Downtown Fargo Street Fair is on my calendar and I’m going to be selling in a few local shops (Unglued & Beautiful Junque!). What is your favorite thing about living around lakes country? The peace-fullness of country life. It’s good for the soul.
What advice would you have given yourself five years ago? SELF CARE. It’s so easy to get lost in our everyday life and trying to please everyone and fulfill orders, but we all need to take a breather and give ourselves some self-love to refuel.

Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity
M
ost people are familiar with the work that Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity does. As part of the largest and most successful nonprofit home builder in the world, this local branch of Habitat for Humanity builds simple, decent and affordable homes for low-income families. Without them, 60 families (plus an additional three to four per year) would be living in unsafe, unhealthy and unaffordable housing. And their work isn't done yet.
While the work that they do every year is extremely important, this year, they are doing something unprecedented and they need your help. From Wednesday, June 19 to Saturday, June 29, they are attempting to build three homes in just 10 days. This has never been done in the area before and is meant to do more than just build homes. It's meant to bring the community together to highlight the ever-growing need for decent and affordable housing. This project would never be possible without a large group of volunteers, sponsors and donors. This is part of a Blitz Home Builders, a group of volunteers who travel around the country and pick one affiliate to build homes. This year, they're coming to Fargo-Moorhead.

"Of the 1,300 Habitat affiliates around the country, we were selected by the Blitz Home Builders as their 2019 partner," said Christopher. "We are honored to have been selected. This build will not only help three families have a decent and affordable place to call home, the awareness that it will bring to our mission and the need for affordable housing will help us increase the number of future families we can serve. Over the last two years, we’ve had to turn away 18 qualified families, simply because we didn’t have the funding to build more homes. This event will help us serve more of those families." A common misconception with Habitat for Humanity is that people are just receiving free homes. However, that is not true. All families must repay the cost of their home and contribute more than 250 hours (per adult) of “sweat equity” in building their home.
Another easy way to support their work is by shopping at Restore. This local homeimprovement thrift store features new and gently used building supplies, furniture, appliances and more with prices ranging from 25-75 percent off retail price. In fact, if the Restore wasn't in our community, more than one million pounds of usable building materials would go to the landfills. More than 15,000 people every year buy discounted material from Restore. Like all nonprofits, Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity wouldn't be possible without the support of the community and they offer a number of ways for you to get involved. "Our biggest need is funding, but people could also help plan events, volunteer on a build or in our Restore or serve on committees or volunteer in our office," said Christopher. "We also have a unique opportunity for companies/churches/ groups to adopt a home build where they can help plan, fund, volunteer and host events specifically for their adopted home."
