A JOG DOWN MEMORY LANE A photo look back at five years of Stride

editor

After looking back at five years and 60 issues of Stride, these are five stories that really stuck out:

editor

it’s not

goodbye, it’s see you later

A

s I began to look back through the Stride archives putting together this issue, I was struck by how far we’ve come in just five years. Yes, the design evolved and the photography got more ambitious, but I think more importantly, we found our voice over the course of 60 issues. We (and hopefully you) discovered that some of the best stories could be told through the lens of fitness. Whether it was an article about Presley Hagen, who, at the age of 17, lost more than 200 pounds, or Karen Grindberg, who got back in the gym to regain the strength she lost from 12 straight weeks of cancer treatment, many of the stories in Stride have been about so much more than just workouts and tips. They've been tales of struggle, of determination and of perseverance. You’ve probably noticed by now that I’m referring to Stride in the past tense, and I want to be clear that Stride isn’t going anywhere. At least not completely.

3

4

Going forward, we’ll be publishing two issues a year, instead of the usual 12, to allow us to focus a little more on quality and a little less on quantity. The issues we do publish – one in the spring and one in the fall – will be more robust than the monthly version but will retain much of the structure and content Stride readers have come to know and love. And for those readers who just can’t live without their monthly fitness fix, Stride’s sister publication, Fargo Monthly, will be incorporating a number of Stride-style articles into each issue going forward, so you won’t have to look far for your favorite workouts, tips and recipes. So for now, enjoy this look back at the first five years of Stride, and we'll see you again this spring!

Nate Mickelberg Feel free to reach out with any story ideas you may have.

FEATURE ISSUE 23 - OCTOBER 2012 While we’re proud of each and every cover we’ve produced at Stride, a few stuck out more than the others. From creating our own reality show to turning a photo shoot into an office Christmas party, these 12 covers are extra special.

ISSUE 25 - DECEMBER 2012 Holiday Fashion Issue

One of many cover stories with a fun back story, this cover shoot actually turned into a kind of impromptu company holiday party. We used the shoot to not only show off some great winter clothing and accessories but also to show off the Spotlight Media team, which made up the entire cast of models.

ISSUE 27 FEBRUARY 2013 Queen of Hearts This cover featured Fargobased and Sanford Health’s own Roxanne Newman, one of the top heart surgeons in the country. The blue background was no accident, as we wanted it to match Sanford’s official colors.

ISSUE 28 MARCH 2013 Spring Fashion Issue We really went for it with this one, attempting to create Fargo’s very own version of a Jersey Shore-type reality show for our spring fashion issue. And in true Fargo fashion, a nasty blizzard almost kept us from getting home when the shoot was over.

ISSUE 31 JUNE 2013 Serving Up Summer his one was all about T the kids, as we wanted to showcase all the fun summer things kids can do in the area when school’s out. Featuring kids from the YMCA and shot in Island Park, we had a lot of fun with this shoot, as the young lady in the middle can attest to.

ISSUE 33 - AUGUST 2013 LOCAL HEROES

ISSUE 39 - FEBRUARY 2014 HEART HEALTH MONTH

Sometimes it’s good to change it up and go with a graphic instead of an actual photo. We felt that the cartoonish version of a heart didn’t fit the tone of the story, so instead we went with a more realistic design.

ISSUE 40 - MARCH 2014 TAKING A BITE OUT OF HUNGER IN FARGO-MOORHEAD his one was tough because we weren’t T sure how to come up with a photo that could do justice to an issue as serious as food insecurity. So we went with what we felt was a simple but powerful graphic of an empty plate.

ISSUE 53 - APRIL 2015 Spelling Out Fargo Marathon

A JOG DYOLAWNNE

MEMOR

For this Marathon issue, we really wanted to make the race bib the focal point, as it’s probably the most recognizable aspect of a runner’s outfit. It was also a natural fit for incorporating the Fargo Marathon logo.

ISSUE 54 - MAY 2015 We’re Not Kidding Around: Family Fitness

The great thing about having a kid on the cover is that it makes the photographer’s job a lot easier. The cuteness is built in. This cover was a clever take on family fitness that featured a father and daughter together.

ISSUE 55 - JUNE 2015 THE 9-5 FIT GRIND hile it’s hard to tell, this cover was W actually photoshopped. The model sported both outfits during the shoot, separately, and they were then combined into one composite image in post-production.

April

This was the final month in my threemonth series called ‘New Year, New You’ where we went out with the old and in with the new. I took the training to a new level and introduced supersets. This way of training recruits as many muscles as possible to generate a new response in the muscle tissue. Give the shoulder and arm supersets a try and feel the burn!

3

The kickoff to the running race season means increased miles and increased injuries. Strength training is one of the most important nonrunning aspects of training that will help keep you injury-free. By developing and balancing the strength of your muscles, you’ll become a better, faster and stronger runner. My favorite moves are the ball hamstring curl and scorpion. Add these in for some variety.

June As summer arrived, I introduced an efficient cable machine workout for your arms and abs. By incorporating all moves for this workout onto a cable machine, you got in an intense workout in a timely manner. My picks from this month are: wood chop cable abs, lying cable curl and reverse grip tricep cable extension.

4

my

July It’s not always an option to get your workout in at the gym, so I designed a short and intense lower body workout that could be done anywhere - no equipment needed. Lunges around the world and the gorgeous glutes exercises are some of my all-time favorites. Add these to your current leg routine or do the entire workout for a powerful calorie- and fat-burning workout!

5

August Tabata training is one of my favorite training techniques, a form of HIIT (high intensity interval training) that lasts four minutes and is composed of eight rounds of 20 seconds of work followed by 10 seconds of recovery. This type of training significantly improves both the aerobic and anaerobic capacity of the body, performance and endurance, and turns your body into a fat-burning and lean muscle-building machine. My favorites are: pop squats and burpees. These two drills - lasting just 8 minutes total - will have your heart rate revved and your body turned into a fat-burning furnace in no time!
