the process was definitely communication. Ex: Who has done what and what still needs to be completed? To make this easier, we created a Facebook Group and a VERY detailed Spreadsheet in Google Sheets so everyone had access to cross off the tasks that were completed.

Q: What problems or situations surprised you about the planning process? A: Keeping a wedding small is MUCH harder than it seems.

Q: Looking back on it, is there any part of the planning process that

you would have done differently? A: Honestly, I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

Q: What was the easiest part? And what was the most fun? A: The easiest part was the celebration! During the planning process I think it was definitely practicing makeup with my girlfriends on my bachelorette party day, or the amazing bridal shower my best friend/maid of honor and her mom threw me at their home.

Q: What did you envision your wedding to be like before the planning process started and how (if) did that change throughout?

but when you have larger families the guest list tends to grow quite rapidly. I never thought we would reach maximum at The Plains, but we did! It was quite cozy.

Q: What was the most difficult part of the planning process? A: We had a quick

engagement, so getting everything done in about three months was a bit of a challenge. Once we had a venue, we knew what we wanted and had some preferred vendors so it was just a matter of working quickly and making decisions.

Q: What problems or situations surprised you about the planning process? A: We were not surprised

by much. We really had a very easy planning process. Never came across any major issues. There were four things that Heidi and I focused on: small and relaxed event, her dress, photos and flowers. Once

those things fell into place, the rest of the planning was pretty simple.

Q: Looking back on it, is there any part of the planning process that you would have done differently? A: We were possibly looking at destination weddings in Mexico and Seattle, but including close family was important and those options didn’t work.

Q: What was the easiest part? And what was the most fun? A: The easiest part was working with our vendors. They made it very simple to choose options and worked with our vision. Each one of them went above and beyond our expectations.

PHOTOGRAPHER Liv Photography (Olivia Alnes) Olivia (and Caleb) put us at ease in our first meeting, and also captured the look we wanted with the photos. They were very professional, yet extremely easy to work with and put us all at ease during the day of wedding photos. She got us our finished product on schedule and we couldn’t be happier with how they turned out.

MUSIC Nate Mondry

JEWELER Royal Jewelers We have received excellent service from Royal Jewelers, from the design process through today when we need to get cleanings. We are very happy to be customers of theirs.

Q: What did you envision your wedding to be like before the planning process started and how did that change throughout? A: We originally were

planning a destination wedding in Mexico. Then, it changed to a destination wedding in Seattle. After researching Chase on the Lake in Walker, Minn., it seemed like the perfect spot for a late fall wedding for us, our families and our guests.

Q: What were your top priorities for planning the wedding right after the engagement? A: Getting our four main priorities figured out as soon as possible (small and relaxed venue, dress, photos, flowers). The dress was found on the first shopping trip and we already knew who we wanted for flowers. After one meeting with Liv Photography, it was very apparent we shared the same vision for photos, we were able to lock in Chase on the Lake on short notice and, in a bit of a leap of faith, as we signed the contract.

Q: Did you take any special steps to maintain a budget? A: We knew it would be

a small wedding (around

60 guests), so that helped off the bat. We were just conscious of what we were spending and when we could do things ourselves, we did.

Q: Do you have a wedding horror story? A: No horror stories. It was a great weekend.

Q: What would be the most valuable lesson that you learned that you would like to pass on to others? A: Take time to enjoy each

decision together. The process should always make your vision the priority. You will get feedback from people who care, but at the end of the day, it’s your wedding. Take things as they come … things all work out in the end.

Q: Everybody says that you should have fun and enjoy the wedding planning process and no matter how hard you try, almost everyone ends up being stressed. Any recommendations on how to stay calm during the stressful parts? A: Breathe and rely on the people around you.

the guest list. We wanted to invite absolutely everybody we knew, but of course, that just wasn’t an option. And putting together all the names and addresses was incredibly tedious. Yuck.

Q: What problems or situations surprised you about the planning process? A: We were surprised at how detailed all the vendors we worked with were. Almost all of them asked us to fill out relatively lengthy questionnaires, which of course, took time, but in the end, it totally paid off. We really appreciated how organized everybody we worked with was.

Q: Looking back on it, is there any part of the planning process that you would have done differently? A: I don’t think so.

Thankfully, even though planning our wedding was a ton of work, it was actually a ton of fun ... for the bride, at least. It all went pretty smoothly.

Q: What was the easiest part? And what was the most fun? A: I (Kaylee) have been to what feels like so many weddings, so I had a lot of opportunities to think about what I might want my wedding to be like. When I finally found the right guy and got engaged, making certain decisions was actually really easy. The most fun? Decorations. My mom’s friend, Teri Nelson,

did all of the decorating and she did an incredible job. Last summer, Teri, my mom and I went to Michaels and picked out all the decorations in about one hour. It definitely was an expensive shopping trip, but it sure was fun.

married in November. I’d always thought a fall (September or October) or winter (December or January) wedding would be beautiful, but in my mind, November was kind of a drab-looking month. But, when we were trying to decide on a wedding date, November worked best for both our families. The weather was pretty drab on our wedding day, but the whole day was so sweet; I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Q: What were your top priorities for planning the wedding right after the engagement? A: Booking the church and the venue for the reception. Following the advice of a few reliable sources and booking the photographer was next.

Q: Did you take any special steps to maintain a budget? A: Because my (Kaylee)

parents paid for the wedding, they kept track of how much we were spending. Using fake flowers instead of real flowers really saved us money and it also saved us the stress of keeping real flowers alive.

Q: Do you have a wedding horror story? A: Yes. We ordered the groom’s, groomsmen’s and ushers’ ties/pocket squares from Amazon about six

weeks before the wedding. Despite emails saying they were on their way, they never arrived. We scrambled to buy ties/pocket squares on Thursday night before the wedding. Casey and I found a few sets in Bismarck and thankfully, my parents found a few of the same sets in Grand Forks. In the end, the ties and pocket squares looked great — the guys looked so sharp. The ones from Amazon never did show up ...

Q: What would be the most valuable lesson that you learned that you would like to pass on to others? A: Invest in a great

photographer — you’ll be so happy you did. The pictures are all that you have to remember your wedding by, so they are absolutely worth the cost.

Q: Everybody says that you should have fun and enjoy the wedding planning process and no matter how hard you try, almost everyone ends up being stressed. Any recommendations on how to stay calm during the stressful parts? A: Do your best to laugh

about things that don’t go as planned. Remember the things that go wrong are the things that you remember. Mishaps are just memories in the making.

The Hjemkomst Center They were much more reasonably priced than some of the other reception venues we looked into in the FM area. We also loved that they provided a unique and beautiful setting. So many people commented on how cool the big Viking ship was.

CAKE Nicole’s Fine Pastry made a small wedding cake (Vanilla Bean White Cake with white sprinkles) for me and Casey. The guests ate mini cheesecakes provided by the caterer. It was delicious. We ate the whole thing in just a few days.

CATERING Chef’s Table These guys were absolute professionals. We must have sent about 25 emails back and forth over the whole wedding planning process, and they were always so quick to respond. They always followed through when I called or emailed with questions. They even went above-andbeyond by going to the Hjemkmost to arrange final details — without me even there. I have only great things to say about Chef’s Table.

FLOWERS They were artificial. And arranged by the very talented Teri Nelson.

DECORATOR Teri Nelson

PHOTOGRAPHER Ben Gumeringer He is so talented. I have spent so many hours just looking through his photos — both the ones he took at our wedding and the ones he posts on social media. He was so flexible and friendly.

MUSIC Harmon Entertainment Oh my goodness, these guys brought the fun. They were so entertaining. They literally spent hours going over every little detail we wanted for the reception — and they delivered. The DJ was full of energy and did a great job getting the guests to participate in all the games/reception activities. They even contacted a bunch of the guests we had invited to the wedding but RSVPed that they wouldn’t be able to come and put together an audio recording of their congratulations and well wishes. They surprised us with it at the reception and played it for everyone to hear. We couldn’t hold back our tears. We now have that recording and will keep it forever.

Q: What was the most difficult part of the planning process? A: We got engaged in

February and knew we wanted to have a relatively short engagement. We knew we didn’t want winter, because of how unpredictable the weather can be and ended up deciding to get married in September. Since we only had about seven months to plan the wedding the hardest part was finding a day where all the vendors we wanted were available. Coordinating multiple different schedules and making sure it didn’t conflict with any major event(s) was the most challenging.

Q: Looking back on it, is there any part of the planning process that

you would have done differently? A: Stressing about small

details that none of the guests would have known the difference or really cared about. Your guests are there to celebrate with you and have a good time. Many times, I would over think small details, like centerpieces, when in reality no one really pays that much attention to them.

Q: What was the easiest part? And what was the most fun? A: Once we had our vendors, it was extremely easy working will all of them. From the venue to the DJ they were all extremely helpful and very easy to work with. They made our job easy. The most fun, for me, was going dress

shopping and picking out my wedding dress. I was so fun trying on different styles.

Q: What did you envision your wedding to be like before the planning process started and how (if) did that change throughout? A: I wouldn’t really say

I envisioned anything differently than what happened. I knew it was going to be time-consuming, but it was fun planning it together and with our families. Definitely a lot of memories made in the process.

Q: What were your top priorities for planning the wedding right after the engagement? A: Getting the wedding party figured out, along with asking everyone and then finding the wedding and bridesmaid dresses.

Q: Did you take any special steps to maintain a budget? A: My mom created a

detailed excel spreadsheet to keep track of all the expenses. Just being aware of what you are spending and prioritizing what is important to you will help you stay on budget.

Q: Do you have a wedding horror story? A: As far as I know (or was

told) the wedding day went extremely smoothly and was really stress-free for the

both of us. I wouldn’t call it a horror story by any means, but we were having so much fun at the reception/dance we forgot to cut our wedding cake. We both laughed when we remembered, and it has now turned into a funny joke between us and our family.

Q: What would be the most valuable lesson that you learned that you would like to pass on to others? A: Don’t stress about the

small details. We were told this advice so many times while planning our wedding, but when it comes to the big day it’s so true. You spend months or even years planning for one day, and if one small detail doesn’t turn out the way you were envisioning it don’t worry about it because most of the time your guests don’t even know about it.

are planning for is supposed to be a fun and memorable day. Don’t let the stress of planning ruin the excitement. After the big day, you will look back and think, “why did I stress so much about that?” Everything will work out.

Everything is so planned out, and to be honest, took so much stress from Connor and I because we knew he had it handled. We have had countless compliments on how much fun the reception/dance was, and Dave and Harmon Entertainment deserve all the credit. I would highly recommend them.

EXPERT Q&A

Venues with

Renee Molina Director of Sales & Marketing at Delta by Marriott

What are some trends that you’re noticing in wedding venues lately? RM: We are noticing that people aren’t necessarily doing the formal wedding gala as often. They are moving toward more intimate settings with smaller weddings. With this movement, wedding plans are afforded more details within the setting. More décor and creative menus have also allowed brides and grooms to put their distinctive touch on every detail of their wedding.

What advice would you give people in helping them find their perfect venue? RM: Really look at your personalities and make your choices based on what makes you happy. Oftentimes people have opinions on what your wedding should be…but ultimately this is your day and you should do what makes you and your partner happy. Also, find a venue that is willing to be flexible with your needs as it isn’t a one size fits all event. Having a caring team to help your dream wedding come to fruition is essential.

Renee Molina: I am the Director of Sales for Delta by Marriott and I lead a team of seven in the Sales and Catering office. I have the pleasure of overseeing many weddings and events that take place here in the Delta. With a talented team and a beautiful facility, we are blessed to be a premier meeting and wedding venue here in the FM Area. We know that perfect days don’t just happen – they are planned."

What should the bride and groom make sure to discuss with the venue before booking? RM: Availability to ensure they have the appropriate space open to accommodate your needs. Look at the different packages and add-ons that they offer as this is often an effortless way to include some of the details that you are looking for in your wedding.

What tips do you have in making the space unique, reflecting the bride and groom’s personalities?

RM: We offer partnerships

with local professional decorators that will often provide a great wow factor for your wedding. Creating your own centerpieces puts a custom touch to every table. We also provide signature cocktails picked out by the bride and groom that we provide at the event bar that kicks a dollar back to the bride and groom on each drink sold.

How is Delta working to keep the concept of a traditional hotel ballroom reception fresh and interesting? RM: The Delta has put

EXPERT Q&A

Photography with

Olivia Alnes

from Liv Photography

What are some trends that you’re noticing in wedding photography lately? OA: A refreshing trend (that

hopefully stays forever) is a focus on authentic storytelling and emotion. This means that instead of the majority of photos being posed and formal, there’s a huge shift towards capturing the real day. This includes the tears, silly faces, hugs and even “unflattering” moments. Embracing the celebration of life and love that weddings are is more important than the perfectly posed photo.

What should someone look for in a wedding photographer? OA: Look for someone

who you connect with as a person. Your wedding day is filled with the people you love the most, so why would you have a stranger be the person present for your whole day? Finding a professional photographer who feels like an encouraging friend will affect the feeling of your entire day. Decide what you want in terms of style, personality and price range based on your personal priorities. Then find a photographer who fits you. You want to be able to imagine yourself in their photos and feel at home.

32 | 2018 | FARGO MONTHLY WEDDING GUIDE

Olivia Alnes: I’m a photographer and writer who proudly calls Fargo home. I started my business while still in high school in Northern Minnesota, but Fargo is where I grew a passion for telling stories visually into my full-time job. My husband Caleb came on board as my second shooter and together, we focus on cheering couples on through life, not just wedding days. Together, we drink a lot of coffee, crack nerdy dad jokes and probably laugh more than the average humans.

What techniques do you think you specialize in that set you apart from other photographers? OA: In a world where

everyone and their mom has a camera, I try to really focus on creating meaningful relationships with my couples. My husband Caleb is my second shooter and together, we approach meetings, engagement sessions and wedding days as double dates. Maybe that technique could be called “relational connection.” We work hard on wedding days to create safe moments for couples to be themselves. Our approach

to wedding photography is a combination of giving people direction (everyone freaks out about what to do with their hands) and letting natural life unfold.

What should a bride and groom discuss with a photographer during the wedding planning process? OA: Expectations! How

often will you communicate with each other? When can you expect previews or your whole gallery back? When do I need to pay you? How can I leave a review after? These questions will set the basis for an honest relationship with realistic expectations. This helps

ensure a positive experience with no resentment. Also, make sure that your photographer is legally legit. Having business insurance, contracts and backup gear are a few signs that your photographer is a prepared professional.

What are some tips for couples to know in order to make photography a smooth process on the big day? OA: There’s a lot I could

share as a recent bride myself, but my top three practical tips are: 1. Share your timeline with your photographer for review

(3-6 weeks before) or make one together. 2. Prep your details like shoes, rings, flowers, jewelry, perfume, invitation suite and anything else that’s important to you in one place in your getting-ready room. 3. Make a list of the family photo combinations you want. Consider if you really need every family member that’d be at a reunion in the photos or if the basics of parents, siblings and grandparents are enough for you. One “Real Talk” tip: breathe and enjoy your day. You’re getting freaking married! And that’s a big, beautiful deal – more important than any photograph.
