Para os dias 18, 19, 20 e 21 de Julho, o Moto Clube de Faro promete muita música ao vivo, shows surpresa todas as noites, bares abertos 24 horas por dia, concursos de tatuagens e da ‘Miss T-Shirt Molhada’ na sua Concentração Internacional de Motos. Este ano, o Moto Club apresenta um cartaz de luxo para os amantes da música pesada: o grupo nacional Xutos & Pontapés, SAXON747, Lujuria, Corvos, Custum Circus (com o espetáculo Le Cabaret Rock) e os espanhóis Saratoga farão as delícias de todos os que se deslocarem a Vale das Almas. Não deixe de se juntar aos motards neste evento ímpar a nível internacional.

Juli verspricht der Moto Clube de Faro viel Live-Musik, allabendliche Überraschungsshows, 24 Stunden lang geöffnete Bars, sowie Tattoo- und ‘Miss Wet T-Shirt’ Wettbewerbe. Auch in diesem Jahr hat der Moto Clube den Freunden harter Klänge richtig was zu bieten: die portugiesische Gruppe Xutos & Pontapés, SAXON747, Lujuria, Corvos, Custum Circus (mit der Show Le Cabaret Rock) sowie die spanische Gruppe Saratoga werden den Besuchern des Vale das Almas gehörig einheizen. Between July 18 and 21, the Moto Clube de Faro promises plenty of live music, surprise shows every night, bars open 24 hours a day, as well as tattoo and ‘Miss Wet T-Shirt’ contests at its International Motorcycle Meet. This year, the Motorcycle Club presents an exceptional line-up for fans of heavy music: Portuguese group Xutos & Pontapés, SAXON747, Lujuria, Ravens, Custum Circus (with Le Cabaret Rock show) and Spain’s Saratoga are sure to delight everyone making their way to Vale das Almas, next to Faro Airport. There, you can find artisans working on the most varied of products: baskets, utensils made of leather/cork, bars of soap, creams, among many other products just waiting to reveal the secrets of their production. SÃO BRÁS DE ALPORTEL

FEIRA DA SERRA Como já vem sendo habitual há mais de duas décadas, o município de São Brás de Alportel irá acolher mais uma edição da tão aguardada Feira da Serra. Ao longo dos últimos vinte anos, este evento tem promovido o desenvolvimento turístico da região, através da divulgação das tradições culturais da Serra do Caldeirão, nunca descuidando do convívio entre gerações. No primeiro dia do evento, ou seja, no dia 26, subirá ao palco o grupo musical africano Irmãos Verdades. Já no dia 27, poderá assistir a um espetáculo único de Francisco Menezes e, para terminar, no dia 28, deixe-se deliciar por um dos maiores nomes da música portuguesa: Marco Paulo. Wie schon seit mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten üblich, ist die Gemeinde von São Bras auch in diesem Jahr Gastgeber einer weiteren Ausgabe der beliebten Feira da Serra. Während der letzten zwanzig Jahre hat diese Veranstaltung durch die Verbreitung der kulturellen Traditionen der Serra do Caldeirão die Entwicklung des Tourismus in der Region vorangetrieben, ohne dabei das gesellige Beisammensein der Generationen aus den Augen zu verlieren. Am ersten Tag der Veranstaltung, also am 26. Juni, tritt die afrikanische Musikgruppe Irmãos Verdades auf. Am 27. Juni gibt es ein einzigartiges Spektakel von Francis Menezes zu sehen und am 28. gibt sich einer der größten Namen in der portugiesischen Musik - Marco Paulo - die Ehre.

As has been the custom for more than two decades, the municipality of São Brás de Alportel will host another edition of the eagerly awaited Feira da Serra in July. Throughout its history this popular event has strived to support tourism development in the region through the promotion of the cultural traditions of the Serra do Caldeirão, while ensuring interaction between the generations. The three-day event enjoys a packed entertainment programme: on July 26, the main stage will welcome African music group Irmãos Verdades; on July 27, the stage belongs to Francisco Menezes; and, finally, on July 28, it’s the turn of one of the biggest names in Portuguese music: Marco Paulo.

Também poderá encontrar os já habituais doces regionais, neste evento que todos os anos atrai imensos fãs. O Recinto do Polidesportivo da Vila de Porches espera por si!

Selbstverständlich findet man auf dieser Veranstaltung, die jedes Jahr zahlreiche Besucher anzieht, auch die üblichen regionalen Süßspeisen. This year’s edition of the Snail Festival will bring plenty of entertainment and popular music to the village of Porches from July 03 to 07. In an event where the humble snail is king, other delicious snacks from the sea, such as octopus salad and fried cuttlefish, can be sampled as you can take in the many music performances: Sérgio Rossi, July 03; Belito Fields, July 04; Ana Ritta, July 05; Jorge Guerreiro, July 06; and Luís Portela July 07. UMA ENTRADA GRANDIOSA EIN GROSSER EMPFANG - A GRAND ENTRANCE Percorrendo os últimos quilómetros da Andaluzia avistam-se as torres da ponte internacional do guadiana, sinalizando a chegada iminente a Portugal, mais concretamente ao Algarve. Ao atravessar esta imponente estrutura as águas calmas do rio fronteiriço fluem lentamente lá em baixo e é-nos oferecida uma vista estonteante do sotavento algarvio, curvas de colinas a fundirem-se com o horizonte, Castro Marim e Vila Real de Santo António à esquerda e lá longe, à direita, o município de Alcoutim… Espiando a sua análoga espanhola – Ayamonte – separada pelas águas do Guadiana que correm para o Atlântico, a cidade de Vila Real de Santo António tem a curiosidade de ter sido construída pelo Marquês de Pombal, o secretário de Estado do Rei D. José I, famoso pelo sucesso da sua reconstrução, não só física mas também em termos económicos, de Portugal após o terramoto de 1755. Erguida em apenas dois anos a cidade tem uma disposição pombalina, formada por ruas retas e perpendiculares, semelhante a Lisboa, e uma praça principal dotada de um intrincado padrão de calçada portuguesa; é o sítio perfeito para a pausa de café deste dia. Perto, o cais dos ferrys, outrora tão movimentado, hoje quase desnecessário, é o ponto de partida para uma agradável viagem de barco de belas vistas através das águas até Espanha. Die letzten Kilometer durch Andalusien legen schon den Blick auf die markanten Pfeiler der Guadiana Brücke frei und signalisieren so die bevorstehende Ankunft in Portugal und der Algarve. Beim Überqueren dieses imposanten Bauwerks über die ruhigen Gewässer des Grenzflusses bietet sich ein atemberaubender Blick auf die östliche Algarve mit ihren sanften Hügeln, den Städtchen Castro Marim und Vila Real de Santo António auf der linken Seite, und auf der rechten Seite, in der Ferne, Alcoutim. Mit Blick auf ihre spanische Schwester Ayamonte, die dem Guadiana auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite dabei zusieht, wie er gemächlich in den Atlantik fließt, ist Vila Real de Santo António der erste Ort nach der Grenze. Eine eher ungewöhnliche kleine Stadt, deren Errichtung vom Marques de Pombal, dem Staatssekretär von König Joseph I., in Auftrag gegeben wurde. Jenem Stadtplaner, der für seinen, sowohl wirtschaftlich als auch physisch erfolgreichen Wiederaufbau Portugals nach dem großen Erdbeben von 1755 bekannt ist. Ähnlich wie Lissabon ist die in nur zwei Jahren erbaute Stadt wie ein Schachbrett angelegt und besitzt einen großen zentralen Platz mit aufwendig dekorativem Kopfsteinpflaster – nach wie vor ein fantastischer Ort um eine Kaffeepause einzulegen. In unmittelbarer Nähe hierzu befindet sich der Fähranleger, an dem sich einst der gesamte Grenzverkehr tummelte, der aber heute nur noch als Ausgangspunkt für gemütliche Ausflugsfahrten nach Spanien dient. Ein wenig nördlich von hier liegt das kleine Städtchen Castro Marim, dominiert von seiner Burg und Festung. Die ebenso geschichtsträchtige wie verschlafene Grenzstadt war einst von großer strategischer Bedeutung und viele Jahre lang das Hauptquartier des portugiesischen Christusordens. Heute ist die Burg Schauplatz eines bunten mittelalterlichen Jahrmarktes, der hier jedes Jahr im August stattfindet und zu den großen Sehenswürdigkeiten der Region zählt. Passing through the last kilometres of Andalusia the prominent towers of the Guadiana International Bridge come into view, signalling your imminent arrival in Portugal and the Algarve. As you cross this impressive structure, the calm waters of the border river flowing slowly beneath you, you are treated to a stunning view of the Eastern Algarve, rolling hills melting into the horizon, the towns of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António to your left, and in the far distance to your right, the municipality of Alcoutim. Spying its Spanish cousin Ayamonte across the waters of the Guadiana as it empties into the Atlantic, the town of Vila Real de Santo António is unusual in that it was commissioned to be built by the Marquês de Pombal, King Dom José’s secretary of state, famed for his successful reconstruction, economic and physical, of Portugal after the great earthquake of 1755. Erected in an incredible two years, the town has a ‘pombaline’ grid design, similar to Lisbon, and a main square featuring intricate cobbled paving, a great spot for a café break to this day. Passando pelas zonas pantanosas e salinas da Reserva do Sapal - um belíssimo cenário para passeios na natureza e especialmente para amantes da observação de aves – seguindo para norte ao longo do rio Guadiana chega-se à vila de Alcoutim, no Algarve profundo. Mais um aglomerado ribeirinho com antigo valor estratégico, exatamente onde se começam a fazer sentir as marés no rio, Alcoutim alinha-se exatamente no lado oposto da vila espanhola Sanlúcar de Guadiana, tão perto que quase se tocam. Haverá poucos locais em Portugal em que se veja de tão perto os vizinhos espanhóis! Uma vila na encosta, encimada pelas ruinas de um castelo do século XIV, que nos oferece lampejos do sempre presente rio enquanto se caminha pelas ruas estreitas. Um ótimo sítio para fazer um passeio de barco, apanhar o ferry para Espanha por um euro ou simplesmente para descansar na praia fluvial.

Alcoutim, wo die Gezeitenwelle des Flusses beginnt, liegt direkt gegenüber dem spanischen Dorf Sanlúcar de Guadiana, so nah, dass die beiden sich fast berühren, es gibt sicherlich nicht viele Orte in Portugal, die eine so gute Aussicht auf ihre spanischen Nachbarn genießen! Das am Hang erbaute Städtchen wird von den Ruinen einer Burg aus dem 14.Jahrhundert gekrönt. Beim Spaziergang durch die engen Gassen blitzt immer wieder der allgegenwärtige Fluss auf. Ein großartiger Ort für eine Ausflugsfahrt auf dem Boot, einen Sprung nach Spanien auf der EinEuro-Fähre, oder zum Faulenzen am Flussstrand.

A place steeped in history, the sleepy border town was once of great strategic importance, and for many years the headquarters of the Military Order of Christ. The castle is now the venue for a colourful medieval fair every August, one of the region’s most exciting events. Passing by the rich marshlands and salt pans of the Reserva do Sapal, a great setting for a nature walk, especially for birdwatchers, and heading north along the Guadiana, we reach the town of Alcoutim deep in the Algarve’s interior. Yet another riverfront settlement with former strategic value, and also the place where the river becomes tidal, Alcoutim lies slap bang opposite the Spanish village of Sanlúcar de Guadiana; so close they almost touch, there are surely few places in Portugal with such a good view of their Spanish neighbours! A hillside town, topped by the ruins of a 14th century castle, as you stroll through the narrow streets you continually catch glimpses of the ever-present river. A great place to go a boat trip, pick up the one-Euro ferry over to Spain, or simply to laze on the inland river beach.

Oft als schönste Stadt der Algarve beschrieben, verbindet Tavira auf majestätische Weise seine malerische Flusslage mit der Burgruine auf dem Hügel und einem bezaubernden Flickenteppich aus alten, teils verfallenen Häusern, von denen erfreulicherweise immer mehr instandgesetzt werden. Zu seinem Netzwerk vornehmer Stadtarchitektur aus dem 16. bis 18. Jahrhundert zählen auch ganze 37 Kirchen, eine beispiellose Anzahl für solch eine kleine Stadt. Viele von den, sich in verschiedenen Reparaturstadien befindlichen Kirchen können besichtigt werden, und jede einzelne davon hat eine Geschichte zu erzählen und verborgene Schätze zu enthüllen. Der explosionsartige Bau von Gebetsstätten ist vor allem auf die wichtige Rolle, die die Stadt im 16. Jahrhundert und zu der Zeit der portugiesischen Entdeckungen spielte, zurückzuführen. Der Hafen sah viele Boote von und nach Afrika segeln, und die Errichtung von Kirchen war eng mit den Ereignissen dieser Zeit verbunden. Often described as the Algarve’s most attractive city, Tavira majestically combines its riverfront location and ruined-castle hilltop with a delightful patchwork of old buildings, crumbling or, increasingly, renovated. Within the mesh of genteel 16th- to 18thcentury urban architecture, Tavira can boast an incredible 37 churches, an unprecedented amount for such a modest town. In varying states of repair, many of the churches can be visited and each has a story to tell and treasures to reveal. The explosion of places of worship is due primarily to the city’s important role in the 16th century, and the era of the Portuguese discoveries. O MERCADO DE OLHÃO OLHÃO MARKTHALLEN - OLHÃO’S MARKET HALLS A cidade costeira de Olhão, um labirinto de ruas e vielas estreitas e retorcidas, ladeadas de casas cúbicas caiadas de branco até à beira mar, aninha-se nas águas calmas e tranquilas do Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. Na Avenida 5 de Outubro, por entre dois frondosos jardins e sobreolhando os barcos ancorados que oscilam na marina, estão dois edifícios monumentais idênticos, cada um deles adornado com uma torre abobadada em cada um dos quatro cantos: são os edifícios do mercado municipal de Olhão. Mais do que apenas edifícios municipais, os dois edifícios de mercado que datam de 1916, um para o peixe e outro para a fruta, os vegetais e carne, representam a vivacidade da cidade, uma colorida miscelânea de pessoas e produtos, clientes a comprar as suas provisões diárias, negociantes a apregoar aos clientes que passam, locais e turistas juntos em esplanadas de cafés dispersos. Albergando Olhão um importante porto de pesca não é de admirar que o seu mercado do peixe seja um dos melhores da região. Peixes de todos as formas, tamanhos e cores são orgulhosamente dispostos nas bancas por um número aparentemente interminável de vendedores, com a frescura acabada de pescar garantida. Desde meia dúzia de cavalas para grelhar até a uma seleção mais exótica de raias, enguias ou atum fresco, tudo se encontra neste mercado. A visita vale a pena só pela experiência! O mercado está aberto de segunda a sábado das 7:00 às 13:00. Aos sábados os dois mercados propagam-se às ruas de calçada e aos jardins à beira-mar, com vendedores a chegar da região para vender uma surpreendente variedade de bens e produtos.

Mit Blick auf die ruhigen Gewässer des Ria Formosa Naturparks erstreckt sich die Küstenstadt Olhão über ein Labyrinth von verschlungenen, engen Gassen mit weiß getünchten kubischen Häusern hinunter zum Wasser. Hier, auf der Avenida 5 de Outubro, inmitten der gepflegten Gartenanlagen und mit Blick auf die im Wasser schaukelnden Boote, befinden sich Olhãos Markthallen - zwei identische Bauten, verziert von Kuppeltürmen in allen acht Ecken. Weit mehr als nur städtische Gebäude, sind die zwei 1916 errichteten Markthallen, die eine für Fisch, die andere für Obst, Gemüse und Fleisch, das lebhafte Zentrum der Stadt - eine kunterbunte Mischung aus Menschen und Produkten, Verkäufern, die lauthals ihre Ware anpreisen, Einheimischen und Touristen, die hier ihre täglichen Einkäufe verrichten und sich anschließend in einem der vielen Cafés eine Erfrischung gönnen. In unmittelbarer Nähe zum eigenen großen Fischereihafen gelegen, verwundert es kaum, dass Olhãos Fischhalle zu den schönsten der Region zählt. Hier gibt es Fisch in jeder Form, Größe und Farbe, stolz präsentiert von zahlreichen Anbietern, Frische garantiert. Von einem halben Dutzend Makrelen für den Grillabend bis zur exotischen Auswahl an Rochen, Aalen und frischem Thunfisch, findet man hier alles. Das Spektakel allein ist einen Besuch wert! Geöffnet täglich von 7.00 bis 13.00 Uhr (Sonntags geschlossen), Samstags wird das gesamte umliegende Gebiet zu einem Riesenmarkt mit unzähligen Ständen und einem breit gefächerten Angebot an Waren.

The coastal city of Olhão looks out over the calm backwaters of the Ria Formosa Nature Park, tumbling down through a maze of twisting, narrow alleys lined with cubic whitewashed houses, to reach the waterfront. Here, on the Avenida 5 de Outubro, stood between two leafy gardens and overlooking bobbing boats moored in the marina, stand two identical monumental buildings, each adorned with a domed tower at their four corners – Olhão’s municipal market halls. Much more than just municipal buildings, the two halls dating from 1916, one for fish and one for fruit and vegetables (and meat), represent the vibrating hub of the city, a colourful blend of people and produce, shoppers buying their daily provisions, stallholders shouting to passing custom, and locals and tourists mingling on sprawling café terraces. Home to a major fishing port, it’s no wonder that Olhão’s fish hall is one of the region’s finest. Fish of every shape, size and colour are proudly displayed by a seemingly endless choice of vendors, with the freshness of the catch guaranteed. From half a dozen mackerel to grill on you BBQ to an exotic selection of rays, eels and fresh tuna, you’ll find it all. Just for the spectacle, it’s worth it! Open daily from 7.00am to 1.00pm (closed Sunday), Saturday sees the two markets spreading out onto the cobbled streets and into the waterfront gardens, with stallholders arriving from the local area to sell a startling variety of goods and produce.

ALDEIA DE ESTOI Das Dorf Estoi - The village of Estoi Localizada a cerca de 10 Km a norte de Faro a aldeia de Estoi tem o charme típico do interior algarvio. A igreja neoclássica, com a sua escadaria antiga em calçada descendo até à praça que alberga um par de cafés convidativos, oferece-nos uma imagem cativante desta aldeia tranquila. Mas existem mais duas razões pelas quais Estoi merce uma visita: as ruínas romanas de Milreu e o palácio de Estoi. Localizadas logo à entrada da aldeia as ruínas romanas apenas foram descobertas em 1877. Datando do século primeiro nestas ruinas encontramos uma casa senhorial, edifícios agrícolas, um complexo termal e um templo. De salientar os espantosos mosaicos, alguns apresentando representações intrincadas da vida marinha. Existe também uma casa do século XVI com cunhais cilíndricos que foi renovada e que serve agora de centro de acolhimento aos visitantes. (Aberto de terça a domingo 10:30 – 13:00, 14:00 – 18:30, sendo a última entrada 30 minutos antes do encerramento). Os trabalhos no extravagante palácio de Estoi em estilo rococó iniciaram em 1840 mas só terminaram em 1909 tendo o homem responsável pela sua conclusão sido feito visconde de Estoi. Este palácio cor-de-rosa com o seu interior intrincado de estuque e capela é um marco visível a grande distância. Foi completamente remodelado e transformado em pousada. Infelizmente não é possível visitar os seus fabulosos jardins, que parecem saídos de um conto de fadas, no entanto o restante palácio pode, inclusive o terraço-café (aberto das 11:00 à meia-noite), um local fantástico para relaxar com uma bebida.

Etwa 10 km nördlich von Faro gelegen verströmt das Dörfchen Estoi den typischen Inlandcharme der Algarve. Die neoklassische Kirche, deren alte Kopfsteinpflastertreppe zum Platz mit seinen gemütlichen Cafés hinunterführt, ist ein beliebtes Fotomotiv dieses ruhigen Dörfchens. Aber es gibt zwei weitere Gründe, die einen Besuch in Estoi lohnenswert machen – und zwar die römischen Ruinen von Milreu und der Palast von Estoi. Die am Dorfeingang gelegenen römischen Ruinen wurden erst im Jahre 1877 entdeckt. Es handelt sich hierbei um aus dem 1. Jahrhundert n. Chr. stammende Ruinen eines großen Herrenhauses (villa), landwirtschaftlicher Gebäude, eines Thermalbad-Komplexes und eines Tempels. Hervorzuheben sind die unglaublich schönen Mosaike, besonders die komplexen Darstellungen von Meerestieren. Ein Haus mit einzigartigen zylindrischen Strebepfeilern aus dem 16. Jahrhundert wurde komplett renoviert und dient heute als Besucherzentrum. (Geöffnet Di-So 10.30-13.00 Uhr, 14.00-18.30 Uhr, letzter Einlass 30 Minuten vor Schließung). Die aufwendigen Bauarbeiten zur Errichtung des im Rokoko-Stil gehaltenen Estoi Palastes begannen im Jahre 1840 und wurden erst 1909, durch den späteren Viscount von Estoi, abgeschlossen. Der nunmehr komplett renovierte rosafarbene Palast mit seinem schmucken Stuckinterieur und der kleinen Kapelle ist das von weitem sichtbare Wahrzeichen des Dorfes und beherbergt heute ein Pousada Hotel. Leider können seine wunderschönen Gärten derzeit nicht besichtigt werden, dafür aber der Rest des Palastes, einschließlich der Café-Terrasse (geöffnet 11.00 bis Mitternacht), auf der man hervorragend einen leckeren Drink mit spektakulärer Aussicht genießen kann.

Located about 10 km north of the city of Faro, the village of Estoi offers the typical charm of the Algarve’s interior. The neoclassical church, with its ancient cobbled steps leading down to the square, home to a couple of cosy cafés, provides an endearing snapshot of this quiet village. But there are two other reasons why Estoi merits a closer look – the Roman Ruins of Milreu, and the Palace of Estoi. Located at the entrance to the village, the Roman ruins were only discovered in 1877. Dating from as early as the 1st century AD, the site features the ruins of a large manor house (villa), farm buildings, a thermal bath complex and a temple. Highlights of the ruins include the stunning mosaics, some featuring intricate depictions of marine wildlife. A 16th-century house, with unique cylindrical buttresses, has been renovated and now serves as a visitor centre. (Open Tues-Sun 10.30-13.00, 14.00-18.30 last entrance 30 minutes before closing time). Work begun on the lavish rococo style Palace of Estoi in 1840, but it wasn’t completed until 1909, with the man who commissioned its completion made Viscount of Estoi. A landmark visible from far away, the pink palace, with its intricate stucco interior and chapel, has now been fully refurbished and transformed into a pousada hotel. Unfortunately its fairytale gardens cannot be visited, but the rest of palace can, including the café terrace (open 11.00am to midnight), a stunning venue for a relaxing drink.

ROCHA DA PENA - Uma riqueza do nosso Algarve Ein wahres Juwel der Algarve - A natural wonder Situada nas freguesias de Salir e Benafim, no concelho de Loulé, a Rocha da Pena é um excelente afloramento rochoso protegido que, devido à sua localização geográfica, proporciona um olhar único sobre as belezas naturais da região. Com uma área que se estende aos 637 hectares e uma altitude máxima de 479 metros, este monumento bucólico possui uma fauna farta com tudo o que de melhor a natureza tem para oferecer. Entre mais de 120 espécies de aves avistadas a patrulhar o ar, destacam-se, pela sua originalidade, o gaio-comum, a águia-deasa-redonda e a garça-real. Para além desta invejável avifauna, podem, também, ser avistados diversos mamíferos como o javali de pequeno porte, coelhos bravos, raposas e algumas espécies de morcegos que estão em vias de extinção. Located in the parishes of Salir and Benafim, in the municipality of Loulé, the Rocha da Pena is a protected rocky outcrop, which, due to its geographical location, provides a unique vision of the natural beauty of the region. With an area extending over 637 acres and a maximum altitude of 479 metres, this rural monument creates the habitat for a wealth of fauna. Among more than 120 species of birds sighted patrolling the air, highlights include the Eurasian Jay, the Common Buzzard and the Grey Heron. O centro histórico da cidade é o spot perfeito para começar a noite com um passeio, enquanto se desfruta de uma atmosfera vibrante e de uma imensa oferta de restaurantes e bares, quase todos com esplanadas e música ao vivo. Mas com o avançar da noite, o passo natural será ir até às imediações da chamada rua da Oura (que fica, na realidade, na confluência com Santa Eulália e Areias de São João) – zona também conhecida entre a imensa maioria dos turistas britânicos que visitam Albufeira como “The Strip”. O nome, aliás, não é uma mera coincidência: animação noturna para adultos é algo que também faz parte da oferta diversificada da Oura. Depois desta hora, para desafiar a resistência dos mais audazes, há nas redondezas várias das mais reconhecidas discotecas do Algarve, onde a música dura, pelo menos, até às 6.

Im Hochsommer besteht das Hauptgericht der Region bekanntlich aus Sonne und Meer. Aber für diejenigen, die sich nach einem guten Tag am Strand, gerne einen Nachtisch von ein, zwei Drinks und vielleicht sogar einem anschließenden Tänzchen gönnen, ist Albufeira definitiv der richtige Ort. Das historische Stadtzentrum ist der perfekte Ausgangspunkt für einen abendlichen Spaziergang in lebendiger Atmosphäre und lockt mit einer großen Auswahl an Restaurants und Bars, die meisten davon mit Aussenterrasse und Live-Musik. Zu fortgeschrittener Stunde geht es dann Richtung Osten zur Avenida Sá Carneiro – einer langen Allee, die die beiden Stadtteile Montechoro und Areias de São João verbindet und bei der großen Mehrheit der britischen Touristen eher unter dem Namen “The Strip” bekannt ist. Den Namen kann man auch anders deuten : die etwas pikantere Abendunterhaltung für Erwachsene gehört nämlich ebenso zur breiten Angebotspalette der Avenida wie der Rest. Und dieser Rest ist zweifelsohne vielfältig: auf dem belebten “Strip”, wo Englisch als Hauptsprache der lautstarken Gruppen junger (und weniger junger) Besucher vorherrscht, findet man auch traditionelle britische Pubs, in denen man ein leckeres Pint schlürfen kann, während man der Live-Musik zuhört, einer Sportübertragung zuschaut oder, sollte man zu den etwas kühneren gehören, fremde Ohren dem Karaoke Test unterzieht. Für Tanzwütige gibt es zahlreiche Bars mit Tanzfläche und DJs, die ganz unterschiedliche Arten von Musik auflegen (wobei natürlich die britischen Charts keinesfalls vernachlässigt werden). Die meisten Bars schließen ihre Türen um 4 Uhr morgens. Danach finden Hartgesottene in der Umgebung jedoch einige der bekanntesten Clubs der Algarve, wo die Musik bis mindestens 6 Uhr weiterspielt.

At the height of summer, the region’s signature dish, as we all know, is the sun served up with the sea. But for anyone who, after a fun day at the beach, likes to relax with a drink or a twirl on the dance floor, Albufeira is definitely the place to be. The old town is the perfect spot to start your evening with a stroll, while soaking up the vibrant atmosphere joined by a huge choice of restaurants and bars, almost all with terraces and live music. But as the night takes hold, the natural step is to head east, to the Avenida Sá Carneiro, a long avenue linking the suburbs of Montechoro and Areias de São João, known among the vast majority of British tourists visiting Albufeira, and many locals, as “The Strip”. Dissected by the Avenida dos Descobrimentos, The Strip has two personalities: above the dissection calmer, less built up with restaurants and shops; below, an adult playground of bars, clubs, souvenir shops and late-night entertainment. On the bustling Strip, where English seems the lingua franca between noisy groups of young men and women (and less young), you can take your pick of traditional British pubs and cool off with one of the many pints leaving the bar, while listening to live music, watching a game via satellite, or if a little more daring, submit your karaoke singing skills to your fellow bar-goers. If your feet are itching, there are several bars with a dance floor and DJs playing various styles of music (British hits aren’t forgotten here either). Most bars close doors at 4 am. After this time, to challenge the staying power of the most intrepid, nearby you’ll find some of the Algarve’s best known nightclubs, where the music plays on until at least 6 am.

Pensar em História e no Algarve e não visitar o Castelo de Silves é como ir a Nova Iorque e não ver o Empire State Building. Silves foi a primeira capital do Algarve depois da definitiva conquista cristã da região pelo rei D. Afonso III, em meados do século XIII. Já o Castelo, hoje classificado como Monumento Nacional, é uma construção islâmica adaptada de uma fortificação já existente no local, provavelmente feita por Romanos ou Visigodos. Aquele que é o maior castelo do Algarve – e considerado, por muitos, o mais belo exemplo das construções militares islâmicas em Portugal – tem nas suas anteriores valências militares também o seu principal atrativo turístico: as muralhas, a vista deslumbrante e a posição predominante sobre o rio Arade fazem dele um lugar que nos transporta para a “época medieval”. De fora, à noite o Castelo dos Mouros iluminase para uma bonita vista. A zona do castelo e cidade velha é também “palco” para a Feira Medieval (que decorre este ano de 2 a 12 de agosto) e recria historicamente a altura da conquista do reino do Algarve.

Denkt man an Geschichte und die Algarve ohne die Burg von Silves zu besichtigen, ist das wie eine Reise nach New York ohne das Empire State Building zu sehen: nach der endgültigen christlichen Eroberung der Region durch König Alfons III. Mitte des dreizehnten Jahrhunderts war Silves die erste Hauptstadt der Algarve. Die mittlerweile als Nationaldenkmal eingestufte Burg ist ein islamischer Bau, der auf den Mauern einer bereits bestehenden Festung, vermutlich römischen oder westgotischen Ursprungs, errichtet wurde. Die militärischen Vorzüge der größten Burg der Algarve, die von vielen als schönstes Beispiel islamischer Militärgebäude in Portugal bezeichnet wird, sind genau die, die sie auch zu einem touristischen Anziehungspunkt machen: ihre Mauern, die vorherrschende Position am und die atemberaubende Aussicht auf den Arade Fluss. Und auch nachts bietet die maurische Burg einen ganz zauberhaften Anblick, wenn sie von aussen angestrahlt wird. An diesem schönen Ort lässt man sich gedanklich gerne zurück ins Mittelalter transportieren. Daher sind die Burg und die umliegende Altstadt auch die passende Bühne für die alljährlich stattfindene Feira Medieval (in diesem Jahr 2. bis 12. August), ein Mittelaltermarkt, der die historische Zeit der Eroberung des Königreichs der Algarve wiederauferstehen lässt.

Thinking about history in the Algarve and not visiting Silves Castle is like going to New York and not seeing the Empire State Building. Silves was the first capital of the Algarve after the definitive Christian conquest of the region by King Afonso III, in the mid-13th century. The castle, now classified as a National Monument, is an Islamic construction adapted from a fortification that already existed on the site, probably built by the Romans or Visigoths. The Algarve’s largest castle - and considered by many the most beautiful example of Islamic military architecture in Portugal – also has its main attractions in its former military assets: the walls, the stunning view and its predominant position above the River Arade create a setting that whisks you back to the medieval era. At night, the outside of the Moorish castle is lit up, creating a beautiful spectacle. The area around the castle and the old city is also the “stage” for Silves Medieval Fair (this year held August 02-12), in which the time of the conquest of the Kingdom of the Algarve is recreated.

De qualidade reconhecida, aliás, as águas translúcidas são outro dos encantos deste local abençoado. Um dieses kleine Paradies zu erreichen, muss man 115 Stufen zwischen steilen Klippen und üppiger Vegetation hinabsteigen. Aber dieser Aufwand wird reich belohnt: der goldene Sandstrand, die orangefarbenen Klippen, die exotisch geformten Felsen und der Kontrast mit dem azurblauen Wasser ist einfach atemberaubend und man fühlt sich dankbar, solche Schönheit genießen zu dürfen. Von ausgezeichneter Qualität, sorgt das kristallklare Wasser zudem für weiteren Zauber an diesem wunderbaren Ort. It’s a little secret - but not for lack of ‘publicity’: the Praia da Marinha beach (Lagoa) has already been considered by the Michelin Guide as one of the hundred most beautiful beaches in the world. It’s been used as the promotional image of Portugal, and has been the subject of several adverts. To access this small slice of paradise, you’ll need to descend 115 steps between steep cliffs and lush vegetation. But the effort is well worth it: the golden sandy beach, the orange cliffs, the exotically shaped rocks and the contrast they make with the blue waters is simply stunning and you’ll feel blessed to be allowed to enjoy such beauty. Renowned for their quality, the clear waters are another of the charms of this idyllic setting. The unique visibility of the seafloor makes Praia da Marinha a haven for diving or snorkelling fans: in addition to several caves, seahorses, anemones, starfish, rainbow wrasse, octopus, cuttlefish, sea urchins or two-banded seabream are just some of the species that can be seen by people venturing into the underwater world.

UM MUSEU QUE JÁ É UM MUST SEE Ein Museum, das man gesehen haben muss - A must-see museum Era uma centenária fábrica de conservas. Hoje, no coração da zona ribeirinha de Portimão, e com o declínio daquela indústria, que durante tantos anos significou o sustento de tantas famílias da região, aquela fábrica foi convertida em museu e manteve o relevo na vida da cidade: o Museu de Portimão, que abriu em 2008, recebe atualmente milhares de visitantes por ano e já é um dos principais polos de atração turística da região. Pelo meio, já recolheu galardões na categoria de Melhor Museu do Ano de 2010 pelo Conselho da Europa tal como Melhor Museu Português pela Associação Portuguesa de Museologia. Se o turismo de massas que caracteriza o Algarve fez desaparecer alguma da identidade de uma comunidade piscatória, é precisamente essa que o Museu tenta recuperar: o espólio preserva a memória local com peças de habitantes e empresas que fazem parte da história da cidade e mostra a sua evolução, desde os tempos da Pré-História até à realidade préturística da região, onde a indústria naval e pesqueira, particularmente da Sardinha, são destaques.

Portimão

Ein ganzes Jahundert lang war sie eine Fischkonservenfabrik. Heute, nach dem Niedergang der Fischkonservenindustrie, die für so lange Zeit die Existenz vieler Familien in der Region sicherte, ist die alte Fabrik im Herzen von Portimãos Flussuferbereich ein Museum und bleibt somit auch weiterhin ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Stadtlebens. Das im Jahre 2008 eröffnete Portimão Museum empfängt derzeit Tausende von Besuchern pro Jahr und ist somit bereits ein wichtiger touristischer Anziehungspunkt der Region. Auf dem Weg dorthin hat das Museum viel Anerkennung erfahren und gewann 2010 den ‘Museumspreis des Europarates’, sowie den Titel ‘Bestes Portugiesisches Museum’ des portugiesischen Verbandes für Museumskunde. Das Museum versucht zu retten, was der heute die Algarve charakterisierende Massentourismus dem Ort an Identität geraubt hat. Die Sammlung bewahrt die Lokalvergangenheit mit Originalgegenständen von Einwohnern und örtlichen Firmen, die fester Bestandteil der Stadtgeschichte sind und zeigt deren Entwicklung von prähistorischen Zeiten bis zu der Zeit kurz vor Einsetzen des Tourismus, wobei dem Schiffbau und der Fischerei, insbesondere der Sardinenfischerei, besondere Aufmerksamkeit zukommen.

For many years it was a fish cannery. Today, following the decline of the canning industry, which for so many years was the livelihood of so many families in the region, the factory in the heart of Portimão’s riverfront area has been converted into a museum and thus continues a highlight of city life. Portimão Museum, which opened in 2008, currently welcomes thousands of visitors a year and is already a major tourist attraction for the region. Along the way it has enjoyed exceptional recognition, winning the ‘Council of Europe Prize’ at the European Museum of the Year Awards 2010, and awarded Best Portuguese Museum by the Portuguese Museology Association. If mass tourism characterising the Algarve has caused some of the identity of a fishing community to fade away, this is precisely what the museum tries to recover: the collection preserves the local past, with items sourced from residents and businesses that are part of the city’s history, revealing its evolution since prehistoric times to the times just before tourism hit the region, where shipbuilding and fishing, particularly sardine fishing, are highlighted.

Caldas de Monchique

A CIDADE DOS DESCOBRIMENTOS Die Stadt der Entdeckungen - The City of Discovery Como Portugal, também a cidade de Lagos esteve sempre ligada ao mar. E como o País, a sua altura mais gloriosa foi também a época dos Descobrimentos: foi de Lagos que, no século XV, o Infante D. Henrique equipou as suas caravelas projetando os grandes feitos dos navegadores portugueses. Foi de Lagos que Gil Eanes mostrou que o Mundo não acabava no Cabo Bojador (no Saara, em Marrocos) e o mar não era povoado por monstros ou que, em 1578, o rei D. Sebastião partiu para a batalha de Alcácer-Quibir e nunca mais voltou. Lagos, a antiga capital e a cidade mais populosa da Nigéria, foi assim nomeada por homenagem à cidade portuguesa e ao seu passado glorioso. Hoje em dia, e apesar de parte da cidade ter sido arrasada no grande terramoto e tsunami de 1755, Lagos mantém vários pontos de interesse ligados à sua História: é possível passear pela cidade velha e visitar o local (na casa das arcadas, na Praça Infante D. Henrique), onde se realizou o primeiro mercado de escravos da Europa ou perceber melhor as Grandes Descobertas, visitando o núcleo museológico dedicado aos Descobrimentos Portugueses (instalado no interior do Forte da Ponte da Bandeira). Na Praça Gil Eanes, é possível ver uma escultura do artista português João Cutileiro, que molda o jovem rei D. Sebastião, com um ar alucinado e vazio. A peça, realizada e disposta naquela praça escassos meses antes da Revolução de 25 de abril de 1974, foi na altura alvo de escândalo. Hoje, é uma das principais atrações da baixa de Lagos.

Lagos

Und ebenso wie das Land hatte auch sie ihre Hochzeit in der Epoche der Entdeckungen: Lagos war die Stadt, in der Prinz Heinrich im fünfzehnten Jahrhundert seine Karavellen ausrüstete und die großen Taten der portugiesischen Seefahrer plante. Von Lagos aus bewies Gil Eanes, dass die Welt nicht am Kap Bojador (Westsahara, Marokko) endet und das Meer nicht von Monstern bewohnt ist, und König Sebastian I. zog von hier aus im Jahre 1578 in die Schlacht von Alcácer-Quibir, von der er niemals wiederkehrte. Lagos, die ehemalige Hauptstadt und bevölkerungsreichste Stadt Nigerias, erhielt ihren Namen zu Ehren der portugiesischen Stadt und ihrer glorreichen Vergangenheit. Obwohl die Stadt in dem schweren Erdbeben und dem nachfolgenden Tsunami im Jahre 1755 verwüstet wurde, gibt es zahlreiche Stätten, die von ihrer Geschichte zeugen: Bei einem Spaziergang durch die Altstadt kann man den ersten Sklaven-Markt Europas besichtigen (Casa das Arcadas auf dem Praça Infante D. Henrique), oder zum besseren Verständnis der großen Entdeckungen das kleine Museumszentrum besuchen, das sich ganz den portugiesischen Entdeckungen widmet (im Forte da Ponte da Bandeira). Auf dem Praça Gil Eanes steht eine Skulptur des portugiesischen Künstlers João Cutileiro, die den jungen König Sebastian entrückt und leer erscheinen lässt. Diese Statue, die wenige Monate vor der Revolution vom 25. April 1974 gefertigt und auf dem Platz installiert wurde, löste damals einen Skandal aus. Heute gehört sie zu den wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten von Lagos Innenstadt.

It was from Lagos that, in the 15th century, Prince Henry equipped his caravels and planned the great deeds of the Portuguese explorers. It was from Lagos that Gil Eanes sailed out to prove that the world did not end at Cape Bojador (Western Sahara) and that the sea was not filled with monsters, and from which, in 1578, King Sebastian left for the Battle of Ksar El Kebir, never to return. Nigeria’s former capital and most populous city was named Lagos in tribute to the Portuguese city and its glorious past. Nowadays, despite part of the city having been devastated in the great earthquake and tsunami of 1755, Lagos still retains several points of interest related to its history. You can stroll through the old town and visit the site (in the Casa das Arcadas, in the Praça Infante D. Henrique) in which the first slave market in Europe was held, or learn more about the Great Discoveries, by visiting the small museum dedicated to the Portuguese Discoveries (located within the Forte da Ponte da Bandeira). The Praça Gil Eanes features a sculpture by Portuguese artist João Cutileiro, depicting the young King Sebastian, with a crazed and empty look. At the time, the piece, created and placed within the square a few months before the Revolution of April 25, 1974, was cause for great scandal. Today, it is one of the main attractions of central Lagos.

COSTA VICENTINA: Onde se vive o surf como na Califórnia dos anos 60 Wo das Surfen lebt wie im Kalifornien der 60er Surfing like 60s California Quando, em janeiro deste ano, Garrett McNamara surfou, na Nazaré, uma onda de 34 metros, os olhos do mundo viraram-se para Portugal. De repente, centenas de pessoas deslocaram-se à Praia do Norte, na Nazaré, na expectativa de ver o surfista norte-americano afrontar uma onda gigante, jornais e televisões do mundo inteiro reproduziram incessantemente imagens do feito e uma pequena vila piscatória do centro do país tornou-se o centro das atenções – mas, no “meio” do Surf e de outras modalidades ligadas ao mar, sabe-se que o fenómeno está longe de ser localizado ou passageiro. Já não é novidade que Portugal tem, de facto, das melhores ondas da Europa e existe cada vez mais uma indústria e um novo turismo associado ao mar. Como a Nazaré ou a Ericeira, um dos ícones do surf em Portugal é, hoje, a Costa Vicentina (a faixa costeira nos concelhos de Vila do Bispo e Aljezur), que recebe cada vez mais turistas entusiastas do surf. Razões? Várias. “As condições naturais são excelentes para o surf, mas não é só isso. É que a Costa Vicentina dá o que é cada vez mais difícil de encontrar no Algarve – e no resto do país: a natureza intocada, a experiência genuína de uma terra com tradições. Plötzlich reisten Hunderte Menschen am Praia do Norte in Nazaré an, in der Hoffnung, dem amerikanischen Surfer beim Bezwingen einer Riesenwelle zusehen zu können. Weltweit erschienen unaufhörlich Bilder von ihm in den Zeitungen und Nachrichtensendungen und ein kleines Fischerdorf in der Mitte des Landes wurde zum Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit - aber in der Surfszene weiss man längst, dass dies kein aussergewöhnliches Phänomen war. Es ist nichts Neues, dass Portugal tatsächlich die besten Wellen Europas hat, und so entsteht zunehmend eine ganze Industrie und ein neuer, ganz den Wellen verschriebener Tourismus. Wie schon in Nazaré oder Ericeira, einer der Wallfahrtsorte des Surfens in Portugal, bekommt jetzt auch die Costa Vicentina (der Küstenstreifen in den Bezirken Vila do Bispo und Aljezur), zunehmend Besuch von Surf-Enthusiasten. Die Gründe dafür? Viele. “Die natürlichen Gegebenheiten sind hier sehr gut für das Surfen, aber nicht nur das. When, in January this year, off the coast of Nazaré, Garrett McNamara surfed a 34-metre wave, the world’s eyes turned to Portugal. Suddenly, hundreds of people made their way to Praia do Norte, in Nazaré, in the hope of seeing the American surfer confront a giant wave; newspapers and televisions worldwide endlessly reproduced images of it and a fishing village in the centre of the country became the centre of attention. But in the surfing community, and that of other water sports, it is known that the phenomenon is far from being localised or a passing fad. It has long been recognised that Portugal does in fact have some of the best waves in Europe and there is an industry and a new tourism associated with the sea growing around it. Just like Nazaré or Ericeira, one of the iconic surfing destinations in Portugal today is the Costa Vicentina (the coastline in the municipalities of Vila do Bispo and Aljezur), welcoming more and more surfing enthusiast tourists. surfar aos 13 anos. Desde aí, sempre com o Surf como inspiração, lançou uma marca de roupa (B.Side) que durou sete anos. Em 2009, resolveu mudar de vida. Começou a trabalhar como artista gráfico em regime de freelance e, pelo Surf, claro, mudou-se para Sagres. O seu “último projeto” é o “Sagres Surf Culture”, um evento anual que, no passado mês de maio, juntou em Sagres para a sua segunda edição artistas plásticos, fotógrafos, realizadores ou músicos, com um programa que tinha exposições, palestras, concertos ou exibição de filmes. Em comum, a mesma inspiração. Mas para o organizador e criativo, João Rei, o evento representa mais do que isso. “É uma amostra da maturidade do Surf português a nível cultural”, afirma. A localização do evento, aliás, não podia ser mais emblemática. “Sim, temos [em Sagres e na Costa Vicentina] um mar generoso em ondas”, diz. Mas não só isso: “Aqui, particularmente, tem-se um pouco aquilo que terá sido a experiência do Surf na Califórnia nos anos 60 – e é esse feeling que torna, penso eu, esta zona tão apetecível”, conclui João Rei.

Sein “neuestes Projekt” ist Sagres Surf Culture, eine alljährliche Veranstaltung mit einem Programm, aus Ausstellungen, Vorträgen, Konzerten und Filmen in Sagres, die bei ihrer zweiten Auflage im Mai zahlreiche Künstler, Fotografen, Filmemacher und Musiker anlockte. Gemeinsam ist allen die Quelle ihrer Inspiration. Aber für den Veranstalter und Kreativen João Rei ist diese Veranstaltung mehr als das: “Sie ist ein Beispiel für die Reife des portugiesischen Surfens auf kultureller Ebene”, sagt er. Der Ort der Veranstaltung, könnte symbolischer nicht sein. “Ja, wir haben [in Sagres und der Costa Vincentina] ein wellenreiches Meer”, sagt er. Aber nicht nur das: “Besonders hier gibt es etwas von diesem Gefühl, welches das Surfen im Kalifornien der 60er ausgemacht hat – und ich glaube, es ist dieses Gefühl, das dieses Gebiet so beliebt macht”.

and he knows what he’s talking about. Born in Faro in 1971, he started surfing at the age of 13. Later in life, always with surfing as his inspiration, he launched a clothing label (B.Side), which lasted seven years. In 2009, he decided to change his life. He began working as a graphic artist on a freelance basis and for his surfing, of course, he moved to Sagres. His “latest project” is the ‘Sagres Surf Culture’, an annual event, which, for its second edition last May brought together artists, photographers, filmmakers and musicians, with a programme featuring exhibitions, talks, concerts and film viewings. Their common bond: a shared inspiration. But for the organiser and artist, João Rei, the event is more than this. “It is proof of the maturity of the Portuguese Surf on a cultural level,” he says. The location of the event, moreover, couldn’t be more emblematic. “Yes, we have [in Sagres and the Costa Vicentina] a sea rich in waves,” he says. But not just that: “Here, in particular, there’s a little of the surfing experience of 60s California – and it is this feeling which, I believe, makes this area so alluring,” concludes João Rei.

Para quem não sabe, a água para consumo que é abastecida na nossa região pela empresa Águas do Algarve, S.A., foi a 1.ª a nível mundial a ser distinguida com a obtenção da Certificação do Produto ‘Água para Consumo Humano’. Contudo, parte da população residente no Algarve continua a utilizar a água que sai das torneiras das suas casas para tudo, menos para saciar a sede. A revista ‘FOCUS Algarve’ esteve à conversa com Teresa Fernandes, responsável pelo gabinete de Marketing e Comunicação da empresa Águas do Algarve, S.A., do grupo AdP – Águas de Portugal, para lhe dar a conhecer o processo pelo qual passa a água antes de chegar à sua casa. Atualmente, a Águas do Algarve faz a captação de água, principalmente, nas albufeiras de Odeleite/Beliche e de Odelouca, e em algumas captações subterrâneas, como é o caso de Vale da Vila. Só depois de efetivadas todas as análises à água captada (através de um rigoroso sistema de controlo de qualidade) e, posteriormente, tratada nas suas estações de tratamento de Alcantarilha, de Tavira, do Beliche e de Fontaínhas, é que a empresa procede à distribuição em alta, isto é, distribui a água pelos vários reservatórios municipais. A partir daí, cabe ao seu município de residência fazer-lhe chegar a água. Teresa Fernandes assegura a qualidade da água de rede pública da região: «a água até ao ano 2000, aproximadamente, era uma água de muito má qualidade», mas «num período aproximado de 10 anos a água passou de péssima para uma água de excelência, uma água de elevadíssima qualidade». Faz, ainda, alusão aos benefícios que o consumo desta água pode trazer ao nosso organismo, por ser uma água «mais completa pela diversidade de sais minerais que apresenta». Já sabe, deixe de ir tantas vezes ao supermercado comprar os tão pesados garrafões, e poupe tempo e dinheiro, bebendo a rica água da torneira, mas lembre-se: não a desperdice!

Trotzdem nutzt ein Teil der Bevölkerung das Leitungswasser auch weiterhin für alles mögliche, ausser um damit den Durst zu stillen. ‘FOCUS Algarve’ hat sich mit Teresa Fernandes, der Leiterin der Marketing- und Kommunikationsabteilung des Wasserversorgers Águas do Algarve, S.A., Teil der AdP Gruppe – Águas de Portugal, darüber unterhalten, welche Prozesse das Wasser durchläuft, bevor es zuhause aus der Leitung fließt. Derzeit gewinnt Aguas do Algarve sein Wasser hauptsächlich aus den Stauseen von Odeleite/ Beliche und Odelouca, sowie einigen Grundwassergewinnungsgebieten, wie z.B. Vale da Vila. Erst nach Auswertung sämtlicher Analysen (innerhalb eines strengen Qualitätskontrollesystems) und der anschließenden Klärung in den Kläranlagen von Alcantarilha, Tavira, Beliche und Fontaínhas, wird das gesammelte Wasser in die Wasserspeicher der verschiedenen Gemeinden geleitet, von wo aus es in die Haushalte gelangt. Teresa Fernandes versichert die hohe Qualität der öffentlichen Wasserversorgung in der Region “bis zum Jahr 2000 war das Wasser von sehr schlechter Qualität”, aber “innerhalb eines Zeitraums von etwa 10 Jahren hat sich das Wasser von schlecht zu ausgezeichnet, zu Wasser von erstklassiger Qualität entwickelt ”. Zudem verweist sie auf die Vorteile, die der Verzehr dieses Wassers mit sich bringt, denn es “enthält eine Vielfalt von Mineralien”. Auf das Schleppen der schweren Wasserflaschen vom Supermarkt kann man also getrost verzichten und sollte stattdessen lieber das ausgezeichnete Leitungswasser trinken, was zudem eine Menge Zeit und Geld spart. Bitte denken Sie immer daran, es nicht zu verschwenden.

For those unaware, domestic water supplied in our region by Águas do Algarve, S.A., is the first worldwide to be awarded ‘Water for Human Consumption’ Product Certification. However, some of the resident population in the Algarve continues to use tap water in their homes for anything but to quench their thirst. FOCUS Algarve magazine met up with Teresa Fernandes, head of Marketing and Communications at Águas do Algarve, S.A., part of the AdP - Águas de Portugal group, to find out more about the process water passes through before reaching the region’s homes. Águas do Algarve currently sources the majority of its water from the reservoirs of Odeleite/Beliche and Odelouca, and from some groundwater catchments, as in the case of Vale da Vila. Only once the water has passed through a series of analyses (in a rigorous quality control system) and has been subsequently treated in its water treatment plants in Alcantarilha, Tavira, Beliche and Fontaínhas, can the company begin with distribution proper, i.e., distributing the water to various municipal reservoirs. From this point, it falls to your local municipality to bring the water to your home. Teresa Fernandes confirms the quality of region’s public water network: “until 2000, approximately, the water was of very poor quality,” but, “in a period of about 10 years the water has gone from bad to excellent; a water of exceptional quality.” She also refers to the benefits that drinking this water can offer our body, as this is the “most comprehensive [water] given the diversity of minerals it contains.” So think again; why go so many times to the supermarket, buying unwieldy bottles of water, when you can save time and money by drinking quality tap water? But remember: don’t waste it!
