Liebe Leser,

Dear reader,

É com profundo pesar que anunciamos oficialmente a suspensão daquela que foi, sem qualquer sombra de dúvida, a SUA revista de referência do Algarve. Queremos, com isto, dizer que a FOCUS Algarve vai ser descontinuada. Esta decisão é inevitável, porque a falta de apoios camarários foi uma dura realidade que, durante quatro meses, tentámos colmatar, assim como as escassas receitas obtidas dos apoios publicitários que incansavelmente buscámos. Ânimo, competência e originalidade não nos faltou, mas a crise pára, vê e conquista. Será que iremos voltar? Será, apenas, uma decisão temporária? Não queremos – pelo menos para já, responder a estas questões. O que esta humilde equipa quer é aproveitar a ocasião para agradecer a todas as entidades que, ao longo dos últimos quatro meses, possibilitaram à FOCUS Algarve a oportunidade de trazer até si, estimado leitor, o Outro e verdadeiro Algarve, o Algarve genuíno e acolhedor 365 dias por ano, que possui os mais bem guardados tesouros. Como não podia deixar de ser, fechamos com chave de ouro: apresentamos-lhe as belíssimas rotundas albufeirenses, o esplendoroso Castelo de Alcoutim, o monumental Teatro Lethes e o afamado Museu do Trajo do Algarve. Recomendamos-lhe, também, um passeio pela já internacional Marina de Lagos, assim como um mergulho em Alvor, para aceder ao inigualável Museu Subaquático de Portimão. Ohne Zweifel ist Ihnen Ihre Zeitschrift FOCUS Algarve, die eine Referenz für den Algarve war, ans Herz gewachsen. Die Entscheidung ist unumgänglich, denn die ausbleibende Unterstützung seitens der Stadtverwaltungen war eine harte Realität, die wir vier Monate lang auszubügeln versuchten, und die spärlichen Einnahmen aus Werbeaufträgen, um die wir uns unermüdlich bemühten, reichten nicht aus. An Mut, Kompetenz und Originalität fehlte es uns nicht, doch die Krise kam, sah und siegte. Ob wir wohl noch einmal auf der Bildfläche erscheinen werden? Ob es wohl nur eine vorübergehende Flaute ist? Darauf möchten wir – vorläufig – nicht antworten. Das bescheidene Team möchte die Gelegenheit nutzen und all denjenigen danken, die es FOCUS Algarve während der letzten vier Monate ermöglichten, Ihnen, lieber Leser, den anderen und wirklichen Algarve näherzubringen, den echten und 365 Tage im Jahr gastfreundlichen Algarve, der wohlgehütete Schätze aufzuweisen hat. Und wie könnte es anders sein, wir schließen mit einem goldenen Schlüssel ab. It is with the deepest regret that we officially announce the suspension of this magazine, which has been without doubt, YOUR magazine of reference in the Algarve. In other words FOCUS Algarve will be discontinued. This decision was inevitable, because of the lack of municipal funds and the scarce advertising revenues which we tried hard to find. Unfortunately, we were not able to succeed and to overcome this harsh reality, which we have endeavoured to achieve over these past four months. Courage, competence and originality never failed, but the crisis stops, looks and conquers. Will we ever come back? Will it only be a temporary decision? We do not want to answer these questions for the time being. This humble team would like to take this opportunity to thank all the entities that in the past four months, made it possible for FOCUS Algarve to have the opportunity to bring you, dear reader, the other real side of the Algarve. The genuine and welcoming Algarve 365 days a year, that is home to the best kept treasures. We end off this last edition with the golden key: read about the beautiful roundabouts in Albufeira, the magnificent Alcoutim Castle, the monumental Theatre Lethes and the famous Museum of Traditional Costumes in the Algarve. A Lenda das Três Mouras Encantadas Die Legende von den drei verzauberten Maurenmädchen

The Legend of the three bewitched Moors Reza a lenda que certa noite do longínquo ano de 1249, na véspera da reconquista de Loulé aos mouros por D. Paio Peres Correia, mestre da Ordem de Sant’Iago de Castela, o então governador do castelo louletano terá conduzido as suas três filhas, dignas de uma beleza única, a uma fonte onde tê-las-á encantado, sob o olhar atento dos cristãos que habitavam na zona. Convicto de que só assim as poderia proteger, o governador afastou-se da fonte sozinho, com a cabeça inclinada sobre o peito, e na noite seguinte embarcou em Quarteira rumo a Tânger, em Marrocos, deixando-as para trás na esperança de voltar um dia para quebrar o seu encantamento. Certo dia, enquanto o governador passeava tristemente pelas praias de Tânger, desembarcaram alguns cristãos escravizados que iriam ser vendidos em praça pública. O governador decidiu adjudicar um carpinteiro oriundo de Loulé, para lhe garantir a liberdade em troca de um pequenino favor: este teria de lhe devolver as filhas. Para tal, o louletano teria que se deslocar à fonte na véspera de São João, à meia-noite em ponto, e atirar para dentro de água cada um dos três pães que iria receber do governador, enquanto gritaria pelos nomes das virtuosas raparigas: Zara, Lídia e Cássima. Depois de chegar a casa, e sem reparar que a sua desconfiada mulher espetara num dos pães uma faca, o carpinteiro dirigiu-se à fonte para cumprir a sua promessa. Primeiro, atirou para dentro de água um pão e gritou por Zara, que se elevou diante de si apenas para se evaporar no ar; repetiu o ritual gritando por Lídia, que seguiu o caminho da sua irmã. Contudo, quando atirou o último pão, que estava furado, e gritou por Cássima, esta explicou-lhe que não se poderia juntar aos seus entes queridos por culpa da sua mulher… Segundo a tradição oral, é na véspera de São João que a moura emerge da fonte num pranto incontrolável para se exibir a todos aqueles que por lá passam.

Man erzählt sich, dass vor langer Zeit, im Jahre 1249, in einer Nacht vor der Rückeroberung von Loulé von den Mauren unter der Führung von Don Paio Peres Correia, Meister des Sant’Iago Ordens von Kastilien, der damalige Vogt der Burg von Loulé seine drei Töchter, die von einzigartiger Schönheit waren, zu einer Quelle geführt haben soll, wo er sie vor den Augen der dort ansässigen Christen verzaubert haben soll. In der Überzeugung, sie nur auf diese Art und Weise schützen zu können, entfernte sich der Vogt hängenden Kopfes allein von der Quelle und schiffte sich am nächsten Abend in Quarteira nach Tanger in Marokko ein. Die Mädchen lieβ er in der Hoffnung zurück, eines Tages zurückkehren zu können, um den Zauber zu lösen. Eines Tages, als der Vogt traurig am Strand von Tanger spazierenging, gingen einige versklavte Christen an Land, die öffentlich versteigert werden sollten. Der Vogt beschloss, einen Zimmermann aus Loulé zu kaufen, um ihm im Tausch gegen einen kleinen Gefallen die Freiheit zu schenken: er sollte ihm die Töchter wiederbringen. In diesem Sinne sollte der Louletano in der Johannisnacht, pünktlich um Mitternacht, zu der Quelle gehen und drei Brote, die ihm der Vogt geben würde, ins Wasser werfen und gleichzeitig die Namen der tugendhaften Mädchen rufen: Zara, Lidia und Cassima. Wie verabredet begab sich der Zimmermann, der nicht bemerkt hatte, dass seine misstrauische Frau mit einem Messer in eines der Brote gestochen hatte, zur Quelle um sein Versprechen einzulösen. Er warf ein Brot ins Wasser und rief nach Zara, die sich vor ihm erhob und sogleich wieder verflüchtigte; er wiederholte das Ritual und rief nach Lidia, die ihrer Schwester auf dem Fuβ folgte. Als er jedoch das letzte Brot, das durchbohrt war, ins Wasser warf und nach Cassima rief, erklärte ihm diese, dass sie sich wegen des schuldhaften Verhaltens seiner Frau nicht mit ihren Lieben vereinen könne… Man sagt, dass die Maurin in der Johannesnacht wehklagend aus der Quelle steige und sich allen Vorübergehenden zeige.

The legend says that on a certain night in the distant year of 1249, on the eve of the reconquest of Loulé from the Moors by the Grand Master of the Order of Santiago de Castela D. Paio Peres Correia, the governor of Loulé castle at the time led his three daughters, who were blessed with a unique beauty, to a fountain where a spell was cast upon them, in the presence of the attentive eyes of the Christians that lived in the area. Convinced that this was the only way he could protect them, the governor retreated from the fountain with his head held low on his chest and then the following night boarded a ship from Quarteira to Tangier in Morocco leaving them behind, but hoping to return one day to break their spell. One day whilst the governor was walking sadly along the beach of Tangier, some Christian slaves disembarked and they were taken to be sold in the public square. The governor decided to get a carpenter slave who came from Loulé. In exchange for his freedom, the slave would have to agree to carry out a small favour, to reverse the spell which he had cast on his daughters. In order to do this, the slave would have to return to the fountain on the eve of St. John’s, at exactly midnight. The slave would be given three loaves of bread which he would have to throw one by one into the water and at the same time call out the names of the three virtuous girls: Zara, Lídia and Cássima. After he got home, his suspicious wife inserted a knife in one of the loaves of bread without him noticing. He set off to the fountain to carry out the promise. Firstly, he threw one of the loaves into the water and called out the name Zara, who rose up in front of him only to evaporate into thin air. He then repeated the ritual calling out the name Lídia and she too disappeared into thin air just like her sister. However when he threw the last loaf into the fountain, the one which had been cut, and called out the name Cássima, she appeared and told him that she would not be able to join her loved ones because of what his wife had done. According to old tales, on the eve of St. John’s that Moorish girl emerges from the fountain weeping uncontrollably in order to show her discontentment to all the passer-bys.

Uma fortaleza de referência do Algarve Die Burg von Alcoutim – ein absolutes Muss

A fortress of reference in the Algarve Apesar das dúvidas que ainda hoje subsistem, os historiadores mais eruditos acreditam que, no dia 31 de março do longínquo ano de 1371, o Castelo de Alcoutim foi o cenário que serviu de palco para a assinatura do tratado então conhecido como ‘Pazes de Alcoutim’, que colocou um ponto final na Primeira Guerra Fernandina. Em 2013, precisamente 642 anos mais tarde, a revista FOCUS Algarve apresenta-lhe este magnificente monumento alcoutenejo capaz de seduzir milhares de turistas de todas as nacionalidades, que cruzam a Europa com destino à região algarvia do nosso Portugal só para fotografarem as suas muralhas arcaicas. É na vila de Alcoutim que os mais interessados podem presenciar a imponência desta fortaleza, cuja construção remonta ao século XIV, quando o sexto rei de Portugal – D. Dinis, O Lavrador, concedeu o foral à vila alcouteneja. A edificação do castelo, durante este século, resultou numa aniquilação dos vestígios do período compreendido entre a designada Idade do Ferro e a República Romana. Por incrível que pareça, o Castelo de Alcoutim funcionou ao longo de várias décadas, durante o século XIX, como açougue (estabelecimento comercial onde se vende carne) e, mais tarde – em 1993, foi-lhe atribuído o valor de Imóvel de Interesse Público. Atualmente, alberga no seu interior o Núcleo de Arqueologia que, por sua vez, disponibiliza a quem o visita uma exposição única, com um percurso histórico superior a 3000 anos: ‘10 Anos de Trabalhos Arqueológicos do Neolítico ao Romano’. Diga lá se este monumento histórico merece ou não uma visita?

Trotz bislang anhaltender Zweifel glauben die gelehrtesten Historiker, dass die Burg von Alcoutim am 31. März des lange zurückliegenden Jahres 1371 Schauplatz der Unterzeichnung des unter dem Namen Pazes de Alcoutim bekannten Friedensvertrags war, der dem ersten fernandinischen Krieg ein Ende setzte. 2013, genau 642 Jahre später, stellt Ihnen die Zeitschrift FOCUS Algarve dieses prächtige Bauwerk vor, das Tausende von Touristen aller Nationalitäten begeistert, welche Europa in Richtung Algarve durchkreuzen, nur um seine altertümlichen Mauern zu fotografieren. Im Städtchen Alcoutim können also Interessierte diese imposante Festung bewundern, die im 14. Jahrhundert gebaut wurde, als der sechste König von Portugal, Dinis, genannt der „Pflüger“, dem Marktflecken Alcoutim das Stadtrecht gewährte. Die Errichtung der Burg in jenem Jahrhundert erfolgte auf Kosten von Ruinen aus dem Zeitraum zwischen der Eisenzeit und dem Römischen Reich. So unglaublich es erscheinen mag, aber die Burg von Alcoutim wurde im 19. Jahrhundert jahrzehntelang zu einem açouge, einem Schlachthaus, umfunktioniert, bevor sie später, nämlich im Jahre 1993, unter Denkmalschutz gestellt wurde. Gegenwärtig beherbergt sie das Archäologische Zentrum, welches seinen Besuchern eine einzigartige Ausstellung bietet, die einen historischen Zeitabschnitt von über 3.000 Jahren umfasst: „10 Jahre archäologische Arbeiten von der Neusteinzeit bis zur Römerzeit“. Despite doubts which still arise today, the more learned historians believe that on 31st March in the year 1371, Alcoutim Castle was the stage for the signing of the peace treaty known as “Pazes de Alcoutim” or the Peace Treaty of Alcoutim that put an end to the First Fernandina War. In 2013, precisely 642 years later, the magazine FOCUS Algarve introduces you to this magnificent monument which is able to seduce thousands of tourists from different nationalities. They travel across Europe to visit the Algarve region in the south of Portugal, just to take photographs of its ancient walls. It’s in the village of Alcoutim that the keenest can witness the splendour of this fortress, the construction of which dates back to the 14th century when the sixth king of Portugal – D. Dinis, The Farmer, granted the charter to Alcoutim village. The construction of the castle during this century resulted in the extinction of some traces dating to the Iron Age and the Roman Republic. Oddly enough Alcoutim Castle functioned as a butcher’s shop for a number of decades, during the 19th century. Then much later in 1993, it was designated as a monument of public interest. Currently its interior houses an archaeological centre which in turn provides a unique exhibition for anyone who visits. Its historical path is more than 3000 years old: “10 years of archaeological work dating from the Neolithic to the Roman Era.” Now tell us if this historical monument does not merit a visit?

Os deleites do golfe no extremo do sotavento Die golffreuden des fernen ostens

The golfing delights of the far east O golfe é um dos bens mais valiosos do turismo do Algarve, trazendo pessoas de todos os cantos do mundo para vivenciar as maravilhas daquele que foi, em mais do que uma ocasião, votado o destino de golfe europeu por excelência. No entanto houve uma parte da região onde o golfe demorou mais a enraizar, a zona oriental do Algarve, particularmente os municípios de Vila Real de Santo António e de Castro Marim, onde apenas na transição do milénio se começaram a desenvolver as mais-valias do golfe. Mas os arquitetos do golfe rapidamente apanharam o jeito, modelando as infinitas colinas características do interior e as áreas costeiras baixas, criando fabulosos arranjos à altura de um destino de golfe líder. A lenda do desporto Jack Nicklaus criou um dos mais espetaculares campos de golfe no Sotavento algarvio. Inaugurado em 2007, o Monte Rei Golf & Country Club, perto de Vila Nova de Cacela, é um dos poucos campos de assinatura de Nicklaus e consta, graças à beleza incrível do espaço e ao seu design de tirar o fôlego, onde cada buraco se joga numa zona reclusa do resto do campo, no topo da lista de campos de golfe da região. Perto de Cacela Velha encontram-se mais duas joias do golfe, a Quinta da Ria e a Quinta de Cima, desta feita em cenários do litoral, oferecendo um golfe costeiro, num ambiente de parque, não ficando atrás de qualquer outro campo de golfe no Algarve. Em direção à fronteira espanhola encontramos os últimos dois campos, ambos localizados em Castro Marim e com vista para o rio Guadiana: Castro Marim Golfe and Country Club e Quinta do Vale Golf Resort.

Sport-Legende Jack Nicklaus hat einen der besten Golfplätze Europas in der Ost-Algarve geschaffen. Der im Jahre 2007 eröffnete Monte Rei Golf & Country Club bei Vila Nova de Cacela ist einer der wenigen Plätze, die Nicklaus’ Unterschrift tragen und dank seiner unglaublich schönen Lage und dem umwerfenden Design, wo jedes Loch in wunderbarer Abgeschiedenheit vom Rest des Platzes gespielt wird, steht er ganz an der Spitze der führenden Golfplätze der Region. Bei Cacela Velha finden sich zwei weitere Golfschätze - die Plätze Quinta da Ria und Quinta da Cima genießen Küstenlage und bieten tiefgelegenes Golfspiel im Parklandschaftsstil, wobei sich ihre Herausforderungen vor keinem anderen Platz an der Algarve verstecken müssen. In Castro Marim, nahe der spanischen Grenze, befinden sich die letzten beiden Plätze der OstAlgarve, der Castro Marim Golf & Country Club, und das Quinta do Vale Golf Resort, beide mit herrlichem Blick auf den Guadiana Fluss.

One part of the Algarve that took its time to find its golfing feet, the far east and in particular the municipalities of Vila Real de Santo António and Castro Marim, left it until the turn of the Millennium to reveal its golf assets. But, golf architects quickly got to grips with the endless rolling hills the interior is known for, or the low-lying coastal areas, moulding them to create beautiful layouts worthy of a leading golf destination. Sports legend Jack Nicklaus has created one of Europe’s finest courses in the Algarve’s east. Opened in 2007, Monte Rei Golf & Country Club, near to Vila Nova de Cacela, is one of Nicklaus’ few “signature courses” and, thanks to the incredible beauty of its setting, the wow-factor of its design where each hole plays in wonderful seclusion from the rest of the course, enjoys top spot in the region’s list of leading golf courses. Near Cacela Velha, two more golfing gems, Quinta da Ria and Quinta da Cima, this time occupying a coastal setting, and offering lowlying, parkland style golf, with challenges to match any other course in the Algarve. Heading towards the Spanish border, we find the east’s final two courses, both located in Castro Marim and overlooking the River Guadiana. A trip through history on board the “Bom Sucesso” Recorda-se daqueles barcos portugueses de navegação costeira altamente velozes e resistentes, com aproximadamente 20 metros de comprimento e que gozavam de dois mastros sem mastaréus, usados essencialmente para pescar e transportar mercadorias entre os séculos XVI e XX, que o povo lusitano batizou com o nome de caíques? Ora, nem mais! Apresentamos-lhe, de seguida, uma destas embarcações, por sinal algarvia, que ficará eternamente grafada nos anais da história mundial: o Caíque Bom Sucesso. Corria o longínquo ano de 1808, quando uma população olhanense extremamente revoltada iniciou na Ponte de Quelfes a rebelião que originou a expulsão das invasoras tropas francesas de Napoleão Bonaparte de Olhão. Cientes de que era preciso informar a família real portuguesa então refugiada no Brasil desta digníssima vitória, um grupo composto por cerca de 20 olhanenses partiu rumo à América Latina a bordo do Caíque Bom Sucesso, antigamente conhecido como Drago. Durante mais ou menos dois meses, estes corajosos homens arriscaram as próprias vidas vagueando por um mar desconhecido, enganando a fome e a sede. Com os pés já assentes em terra brasileira, os tripulantes foram ao encontro do Príncipe Regente que, regozijado com o que acabara de ouvir de suas bocas, concedeu imediatamente ao antigo lugar olhanense o título honroso de Vila de Olhão da Restauração. No fundo, o Caíque Bom Sucesso foi um veículo marítimo de transmissão, no tempo e no espaço, de boas novas. Existe uma réplica deste monumento atracada junto aos Mercados Municipais, que possibilita a residentes e visitantes passeios únicos p’lo Parque Natural da Ria Formosa.

Erinnern Sie sich an die äußerst schnellen und unverwüstlichen portugiesischen Küstenschiffe, etwa 20 m lang, mit zwei Masten ohne Topstengen, die hauptsächlich vom 16. bis 20. Jahrhundert vor allem in der Fischerei und für den Warentransport benutzt und vom lusitanischen Volk Caíque getauft wurden? Nachfolgend stellen wir Ihnen eines dieser – im Übrigen algarvischen – Schiffe vor, das für immer in die Annalen der Weltgeschichte eingegangen ist: der Caíque Bom Sucesso. 1808 zettelte die äußerst aufgebrachte Bevölkerung von Olhão an der Brücke von Quelfes einen Aufstand an, der die Vertreibung der französischen Invasionstruppen von Napoleon Bonaparte aus Olhão einleitete. In dem Bewusstsein, dass die seinerzeit nach Brasilien geflüchtete portugiesische Königsfamilie von diesem überaus würdigen Sieg benachrichtigt werden müsse, brach ein Grüppchen von 20 Olhanenses (Bürger von Olhão) an Bord des Caíque Bom Sucesso, vormals als Drago bekannt, in Richtung Lateinamerika auf. Ungefähr zwei Monate lang irrten diese tapferen Männer, Hunger und Durst trotzend, über ein unbekanntes Meer und riskierten ihr Leben. Sobald die Besatzung brasilianischen Boden unter den Füßen hatte, begab sie sich zum Prinzregenten, der hocherfreut über die aus ihrem Munde vernommenen Neuigkeiten der alten Ortschaft sofort den Ehrentitel Vila de Olhão da Restauração (Stadt Olhão der Restauration) verlieh. Im Grunde genommen war der Caíque Bom Sucesso ein Seefahrzeug, das sowohl in Zeit als auch Raum gute Nachrichten überbrachte. Es gibt eine Nachbildung dieses Museumsstückes, das bei den Städtischen Markthallen vor Anker liegt und nur darauf wartet, Einheimische und Besucher durch das Naturschutzgebiet Ria Formosa zu schippern.

Do you remember those Portuguese coastal boats which were very fast, resistant, approximately 20 metres in length, with two masts and no topmasts? They were mainly used for fishing and for transporting merchandise between the 16th and 20th centuries. The Portuguese called them “caíques”. We are delighted to present one of these vessels from the Algarve, the “Bom Sucesso Caíque”, which will be forever recorded in the world historical chronicles. Going back to the year 1808, the population from Olhão was extremely angry at the invasion of Napolean’s French troops, so they united and started a rebellion on Quelfes Bridge which resulted in the expulsion of the French army from Olhão. They knew they had to inform the Portuguese Royal Family, who were exiled in Brazil, of this honourable victory. A group of 20 people from Olhão set off for Latin America on board the “Bom Sucesso Caíque”, formerly known as the “Drago”. For about two months, these courageous men risked their own lives whilst wandering through unknown seas, experiencing hunger and thirst. As soon as they reached Brazil, the crew went to meet the Regent Prince who was overjoyed to hear the news and immediately granted Old Olhão the honourable title of “Olhão the Restoration Village”. The “Bom Sucesso Caíque” was a maritime vessel transmitting, both in time and space, the good news. There is a replica of this vessel docked close to the Municipal Markets, so that residents or tourists can do a unique boat tour along the Ria Formosa Natural Park.

In the bustling inland town of São Brás de Alportel, an elegant manor house has been home to the Algarve’s Costume Museum since 1986. Displaying a fascinating collection of costumes dating as far back as the early 19th century, this museum is much more than it would at first seem, acting as a cultural hub for the town and stimulating cultural and artistic interaction between the local populations of varying origins. Once the home of the wealth Dias, Andrade e Sancho families, the museum stands on the Rua Dr. José Dias Sancho and is open to the public seven days a week. Inside its walls you’ll find a series of permanent and temporary exhibitions. Obviously, some of the 1000 sqm exhibition space is dedicated to costumes, with military wear joining the clothing of the gentry and the lesser classes. The museum, which covers a total area of 5000 sqm, continues with exhibitions on local history and customs, focusing on farming utensils, carriages and carts, the cork industry, religious sculpture, and much more. Art and photography is often the subject of temporary exhibitions, while the museum, with the help of the Friends of the Museum association, organises many special events, such as craft fairs and markets, as well as music events, such as jazz concerts, theatrical shows, and a range of classes, teaching anything from needlework to languages.

Um tesouro artístico Ein Kulturschatz - An artistic treasure Quem é residente no município de Faro – e é amante da arte de “teatrar”, certamente que já ouviu falar no monumental Teatro Lethes, famoso pela sua clássica sala de espetáculos, que já acolheu milhares de representações teatrais, de música e dança. Este magnífico edifício, situado na Rua de Portugal, foi em tempos um colégio de jesuítas da Companhia de Jesus, intitulado de Colégio de Santiago Maior, firmado no século XVI pelo então bispo do Algarve, D. Fernando Martins de Mascarenhas. Desde 1951 que é pertença da CVP – Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa, e encontrase, atualmente, sob a gestão da ACTA – A Companhia de Teatro do Algarve. De pequenas dimensões, o edifício Lethes apresenta uma extraordinária decoração interior, inspirada no Teatro Nacional de São Carlos: a sua planta em “U”, de cena contraposta, permite uma lotação até 500 lugares, distribuídos pela plateia, frisas, três ordens de camarotes e galeria. Dispõe, ainda, de régie de som e luz e de direção de cena. Das cores que o ilustram, predomina o vermelho vivo que embeleza os assentos. O nome “Lethes” advém de um mítico rio romano que tinha o místico poder de fazer esquecer as asperezas da vida a todos aqueles que bebessem das suas águas. Liebhabern der Bühnenkunst und den Bewohnern Faros ist das großartige Lethes Theater, berühmt für seinen klassischen Konzertsaal, in dem schon Tausende von Theater-, Musikund Tanzaufführungen stattgefunden haben, sicherlich ein Begriff. Das prachtvolle Gebäude in der Rua de Portugal war ursprünglich ein Jesuitenkolleg, das im sechzehnten Jahrhundert von dem damaligen Bischof der Algarve, Dom Fernando Martins de Mascarenhas unter dem Namen Colégio de Santiago Maior gegründet wurde. Seit 1951 befindet sich das Gebäude im Besitz des portugiesischen Roten Kreuzes – CVP - und steht derzeit unter der Leitung der Theatergruppe ACTA - A Companhia de Teatro do Algarve. Die großartige Inneneinrichtung des kleinen Gebäudes fand ihre Inspiration im Teatro Nacional de São Carlos: der U-förmige Grundriss, mit gegenüberliegender Bühne, bietet Zuschauern eine Kapazität von bis zu 500 Sitzplätzen, verteilt auf das Parkett, drei Logenränge und eine Galerie. Bei der farblichen Innengestaltung herrscht das leuchtende Rot der Sitze vor. Der Name “Lethes” geht auf den Fluss Lethe aus der griechischen Mythologie zurück, der diejenigen, die von seinem Wasser trinken, vor dem Eintritt ins Totenreich die Erinnerung an ihr Leben vergessen lässt. Ebenso ist das anspruchsvolle Programm des Teatro Lethes bestrebt, dem Zuschauer die Erinnerung an die alltäglichen Sorgen, wie z.B. die aktuelle Wirtschaftslage zu nehmen, wenn auch nur für die Dauer einer Vorstellung.

Anyone living in the municipality of Faro and who loves the performing arts will certainly have heard of the monumental Teatro Lethes, famous for its classical theatre hall. This magnificent building, located on the Rua de Portugal, was once a Jesuit College of the Company of Jesus, and known as the Colégio de Santiago Maior, founded in the 16th century by the then Bishop of the Algarve, Dom Fernando Martins de Mascarenhas. Since 1951, the building has belonged to the Portuguese Red Cross, and is now under the management of ACTA – The Theatre Company of the Algarve. The theatre was originally inaugurated in 1845 and enlarged in 1860. From 1898 it was home to the region’s first film projector, known as the Animatograph, which ensured the popularity of the venue well into the 20th century, until it closed in 1925. In the early 90s it was renovated to its current state. Small in size, the Lethes building boasts an extraordinary interior, inspired by the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon. With its U-shape layout facing the stage, it can seat up to 500, distributed through the stalls, boxes and gallery. What stands out in this intimate theatre is its Italianate décor, with its stunning ceiling fresco almost stealing your attention away from the performance. Part of the Faro Municipal Theatre group, the Lethes puts on a varied assortment of shows and performances, keeping the cultural heart of the Algarve’s capital beating strong.

PORTUGAL MASTERS 2013 A estrela do calendário de golfe português, o Portugal Masters, realizar-se-á, pelo 7º ano consecutivo, de 10 a 13 de Outubro, no Oceânico Victoria Golf Club. Com um prize money que totaliza dois milhões de Euros este é um dos eventos importantes do European Tour, trazendo visitantes de perto e de longe, ansiosos por vivenciar uma importante competição de golfe no destino líder de golfe europeu. O mês de Outubro no Algarve é excecional para o golfe em termos meteorológicos, tendo os torneios anteriores sido caracterizados por condições amenas, sem chuva, ideais para os jogadores, proporcionando bons desempenhos, dignos do calibre de uma etapa do European Tour. Experimente perguntar a alguém, seja a um amigo mais próximo ou até mesmo ao seu antigo instrutor de condução, sobre qual é, de longe, a coisa que mais o irrita quando está ao volante e verá que as rotundas serão bastante referenciadas… É evidente que quem menciona uma rotunda como a principal causa da sua “dor de cabeça” provavelmente não conhece as rotundas da cidade albufeirense. É verdade que algumas não passam de meros elementos decorativos (de bom gosto, diga-se de passagem), mas a grande maioria está intimamente relacionada com o Mar, indiscutivelmente a insígnia da época mais emblemática da nossa história, que Luís Vaz de Camões imortalizou em Os Lusíadas: os Descobrimentos. Relógios gigantes coloridos, minhocas que se cruzam, pescadores… Albufeira tem rotundas para todos os gostos, que farão desaparecer o strees causado pelo trânsito. Propomos-lhe um desafio um tanto ou quanto “alienado”: ignore tudo o que conhece relativamente às características geográficas da cidade de Albufeira e deambule fazendo das rotundas a sua bússola. Verá que não se vai arrepender!

Anyone mentioning roundabouts as their main cause for driving headaches has probably never seen those gracing the city of Albufeira. Indeed, for the people of this city, its roundabouts, in their many fascinating guises, act as essential points of reference for finding your way around. When someone is giving you directions, they’re more than likely to mention a roundabout by its name: “turn left at the worm roundabout”; “it’s just after the dolphin roundabout”. Part of the urban consciousness, many are no more than mere decorative fancies, all in good taste I might add, while others are closely linked to the sea, and to the Portuguese era of the discoveries. This is certainly the case of the new “Discoveries Roundabout”, located at the main entrance to the city, with its impressive sculptural quality, providing a memorable welcome to visitors. Other unforgettable roundabouts include the “worm roundabout”, with a spectacle-wearing pair of worms intertwined in its centre. Another features a pair of oversized watches, which also serve to keep drivers informed of the time, while a third features an acrobatic group of dolphins leaping gracefully through the air.

Concelho silvense é a «Capital da Laranja» em Portugal Silves ist Portugals “Hauptstadt der Orangen”

Portugal’s Orange Capital Sabia que o Algarve é a região do país que detém a área relativa à produção de citrinos de maior extensão - com aproximadamente 70% da produção a nível nacional, sendo o Município de Silves aquele que apresenta a maior produção a nível regional? É verdade. Contudo, a pergunta devia ser outra: o que faz de Silves o «mais importante centro produtor nacional de laranja», «reconhecida entre as melhores do mundo»? A resposta é simples. Foram as construções da Barragem do Arade, concluídas em 1955, e de importantes infraestruturas de irrigação que possibilitaram esta realidade bastante benéfica para o Algarve. The Algarve is Portugal’s region with the largest area of citrus production, representing some 70% of the nation’s overall production. A diving attraction for the Algarve ‘Ocean Revival’ diz-lhe alguma coisa? É o nome do projeto deveras entusiasmante que, segundo as entidades promotoras, pretende «defender o Oceano criando um sítio de mergulho único no Mundo». Por outras palavras, ‘Ocean Revival’ é o projeto responsável pelo incremento do turismo de tipo subaquático na região do Algarve, através da brilhante e cuidada criação do atual museu submerso portimonense, que lhe apresentamos com todo o gosto. Resumindo o projeto de forma lacónica, o ‘Ocean Revival’ pretende que quatro navios que em tempos serviram a Marinha de Guerra Portuguesa sejam afundados com o objetivo de formarem um grande recife artificial, único em todo o mundo. Cada embarcação é devidamente limpa antes da sua implosão, o que impossibilita qualquer tipo de contaminação ambiental que, eventualmente, pudesse resultar do afundamento intencional destas extensas, e agora, obras de arte. Consegue imaginar um navio que pesa toneladas ir pelos ares, enquanto os seus pedaços, os seus vestígios resultantes dessa mesma explosão afundam pelo oceano como peças de um jogo de Tetris? É disto que se trata o ‘Ocean Revival’, que teve um custo aproximado dos 3 milhões de euros. Foi no passado mês de setembro que o Navio Hidrográfico Ex-NRP Almeida de Carvalho A527 foi ao fundo, juntando-se à Corveta ExNRP Oliveira e Carmo F489, ao Patrulha Oceânico Ex-NRP Zambeze P1147 e à Fragata Ex-NRP Hermenegildo Capelo F481. É caso para mergulhar e contemplar…

Sagt Ihnen ‘Ocean Revival’ etwas? Das ist der Name eines wirklich spannenden Projekts, das nach Angaben der Verantwortlichen zum Ziel hat, “das Meer durch die Schaffung eines weltweit einzigartigen Tauchplatzes zu schützen”. Anders ausgedrückt - mit der großartigen und sorgsamen Erschaffung dieses Unterwassermuseums ist ‘Ocean Revival’ das verantwortliche Projekt für den zunehmenden Unterwassertourismus an der Algarve, das wir Ihnen hier mit großer Freude vorstellen möchten. Zusammengefasst besteht das ‘Ocean Revival’ Projekt aus der Versenkung von vier ausgedienten Schiffen der portugiesischen Marine, um so ein großes künstliches Riff zu schaffen, das in dieser Form weltweit einzigartig ist. Jedes Schiff wird vor seiner Versenkung gründlich gereinigt, um jegliche Gefahr einer Umweltverschmutzung durch die nunmehr zu Kunstobjekten avancierten Wracks auszuschließen. Können Sie sich ein tonnenschweres Schiff vorstellen, das in die Luft geht, während seine, aus dieser Explosion stammenden, Einzelteile gleich Tetrisklötzen auf den Meeresboden sinken? Genau so funktioniert das ‘Ocean Revival’ Projekt, dessen Kosten sich auf ungefähr drei Millionen Euro belaufen. Im September wurde mit dem Ex-NRP Hydrographie Schiff Almeida de Carvalho A527 das letzte Schiff versenkt und gesellte sich auf dem Meeresboden zur Ex-NRP Corvette Oliveira e Carmo F489, dem Ex-NRP Patrouille Schiff Zambezi P1147 sowie der Ex-NRP Fregatte Hermenegildo Capelo F481. Da gilt es nur noch abzutauchen und in stiller Betrachtung zu versinken ...

Going by the name ‘Ocean Rival’, this exciting project, its promoters claim, will defend the ocean and create a unique diving site in the world. Ocean Revival thus spearheads a movement to promote diving tourism in the region, through the careful creation of an artificial reef made of former navy vessels. Ocean Revival involves the deliberate sinking of four warships, representing the Portuguese naval fleet, to form the largest single artificial reef structure in the world. Each vessel has been duly cleaned before being sunk, to remove the chances of environmental contamination. The last vessel in the project, the Hydrographic Ship ExNRP Almeida de Carvalho A527, was sunk in September, joining the Corvette Ex-NRP Oliveira e Carmo F489, Ocean Patroller ExNRP Zambeze P1147 and Frigate Ex-NRP Hermenegildo Capelo F481. Creating a kind of diving “theme park”, Ocean Revival will have an exhibition centre on land, telling the story of the sunken fleet in a series of exhibitions, while the project also includes the installation of a hyperbaric chamber in Portimão to service the local community and for use in diving emergencies. The cataloguing of other dive sites in the region is also part of the project. Now the spectacle of sinking the ships is over, time will allow marine life to develop over this new reef, to the enjoyment of divers from the region and visiting from elsewhere in the world.

A shady rural retreat Por mais singelo que um espaço dito natural possa ser, cabe a cada um de nós, seres pensantes, tirar dele o devido proveito, apenas é necessário recorrer à imaginação, aquela faculdade mental capaz de mover montanhas, de tornar presente tudo aquilo que se encontra ausente. Preparámos-lhe um passeio por um pequeno paraíso situado no Município de Monchique – o Barranco dos Pisões, onde poderá treinar a sua… O que haverá para fazer num lugar situado no interior do Algarve, que apenas tem para exibir uma ribeira de águas límpidas que o atravessa, uma árvore monumental denominada de Plátano Centenário e um moinho de água recentemente recuperado e que muitos conhecem como do Poucochinho? Para começar, estamos a referir-nos a um espaço verde, logo é sinónimo de passeios familiares e, por conseguinte, de belos piqueniques. A zona é dotada de algumas mesas e assentos em pedra e lugares sombreados não faltam. Consegue imaginar melhor cenário do que este para se deitar e fazer uma sesta embalado pelo harmonioso som do cantar dos passarinhos? Depois de acordar fortalecido, poderá apreciar as atrações locais por nós anteriormente referidas enquanto pratica jogging por este lugar, que promove um contacto com a Natureza praticamente em estado bruto. Wir bereiten Sie hiermit auf einen Spaziergang in Barranco dos Pisões vor, ein kleines Paradies im Landkreis Monchique, wo Sie Ihrer Phantasie freien Lauf lassen können ... Was kann man an einem Ort namens Poucochinho im Inland der Algarve machen, der nichts als ein Flüsschen mit klarem Wasser, eine riesige hundertjährige Platane und eine kürzlich renovierte Wassermühle vorzuweisen hat? Da es sich um eine Grünfläche handelt schlagen wir als erstes einen schönen Familienausflug mit Picknick vor. Es gibt hier vereinzelte Tische und Stühle aus Stein sowie schattige Plätzchen im Überfluss. Kann man sich einen besseren Ort für ein kleines Nickerchen zum harmonischen Klang der Vogelstimmen vorstellen? Erfrischt kann man im Anschluss daran die oben erwähnten, örtlichen Sehenswürdigkeiten genießen, oder z.B. eine Runde durch die praktisch unberührte Natur joggen. Hier in der Natur dreht sich alles um das Sehen und Fühlen...

Join us as we head up into the hills of Monchique, the lush, verdant lungs of the Algarve, where the air begins to cool slightly and the sound of running water caresses the ears. None other than the actual institute IMCI – International Marine Certification Institute which has attributed the 5 star classification to Lagos Marina in the category “Blue Star Marina”, amongst many other distinctions. It has maintained this certification since 2011, making it the only marina in Portugal and one of the nine European marinas to receive this award. It has a privileged location, as it is relatively close to the best beaches in the area and next to the Historical Centre. Lagos Marina was “one of the best planned urban projects on the Algarve coast”, and the investment company responsible for this venture was MSF TUR. IM, SPGS, SA. This project emerged in the summer of 1994 and since then it has been one of the main tourist attractions in the city. Há monumentos e Monumentos… Ganz besondere Monumente - Mega monuments Um dos tipos de turismo mais praticados na nossa região é o designado Turismo Cultural que, como o próprio nome indica, tem como alicerce a deslocação motivada, única e exclusivamente, pela busca da Cultura, de experiências culturais idiossincráticas de cada povoação, de cada comunidade. Seguindo esta linha de pensamento, decidimos trazer até si, estimado leitor, os raríssimos Monumentos Megalíticos do Município de Vila do Bispo. Espalhados pelo Barrocal e pelo Litoral algarvios, são monolíticos, ou seja, formados de uma só pedra, talhados em calcário e de cor branca, de várias formas e dimensões. Deste avito espólio, constituído por cerca de 80 menires (cuja construção estava relacionada com rituais e cooperação física/espiritual da população, que se instalava em zonas junto ao litoral, sem grandes defesas naturais), fazem parte o Aspradantas, os Menires de Milrei e de Padrão ou o Conjunto Megalítico do Monte dos Amantes. Conjeturase que os Monumentos Megalíticos do Concelho vila-bispense, que comprovam uma ativa presença humana no sudoeste algarvio desde o período Neolítico, remetam aos 4 mil/3 mil milénios antes de Cristo. Eine der häufigsten Tourismusformen in unserer Region ist der sogenannte Kulturtourismus, der, wie der Name schon sagt, den Grund einer Reise einzig und allein im Sammeln kultureller Erfahrungen und dem Kennelernen der kulturellen Besonderheiten eines Ortes hat. In diesem Sinne möchten wir unseren Lesern hier die äusserst seltenen Megalithmonumente der Gemeinde Vila do Bispo näher bringen. Im gesamten Barrocalgebirge und Küstengebiet der Algarve verstreut finden sich monolithische, bzw. “aus einem Guss” gehauene Steine aus weissem Kalkstein in verschiedenen Formen und Größen. Dieser reiche Nachlass, bestehend aus etwa 80 Menhiren (Hinkelsteine) (deren Schaffung mit Ritualen und der körperlichen und spirituellen Zusammenarbeit der Bevölkerung verbundenen war, die sich in den Gebieten entlang der Küste ohne größeren natürlichen Schutz niedergelassen hatten), zu denen die Menhire von Milrei und Padrão, sowie die Megalithengruppe von Monte dos Amantes gehören. Man geht davon aus, dass die Megalithmonumente von Vila do Bispo der Beweis für eine aktive menschliche Präsenz im Südwesten der Algarve seit der Jungsteinzeit um 4000 - 3000 v.Chr. sind. Wenn Sie also das nächste Mal in die Gegend von Vila do Bispo, Raposeira oder Budens kommen, sollten Sie auf jeden Fall nach diesen prähistorischen Monumenten Ausschau halten.

One of the kinds of tourism that is most practiced in our region is so-called cultural tourism, which, as the name indicates, is based on travelling in search of culture, and cultural experiences that are particular to each place, to each community. With this in mind, let us introduce you to the unique megalithic monuments of the municipality of Vila do Bispo. Spread across inland and coastal parts of the Algarve, these monuments are monoliths, meaning they are formed out of single stone. Carved from limestone, they are white in colour and come in a range of shapes and sizes. This ancestral collection, made up of about 80 menhirs (the construction of which was related to rituals of physical and spiritual cooperation of the population, who settled in areas close to the coast, and had no natural defences), includes the Aspradantas, the Menhirs of Milrei, the Menhirs of Padrão and the Megalithic Group of Montes dos Amantes. It is believes that the megalithic monuments of the municipality of Vila do Bispo, which prove active human presence in the Algarve’s south west since Neolithic times, date from three to four thousand years before Christ. The next time you pass through the parishes of Vila do Bispo, Raposeira or Budens, look out for these prehistoric monuments, and don’t forget to take your camera to record the monument and the moment.

O sol convida a vestir o fato de banho e o leitor, como é óbvio, não diz que não. Por isso, deixe os incómodos agasalhos no guarda-roupa e venha connosco ao Município de Aljezur, conhecer a Praia da Amoreira. Situada perto da vila aljezurense, a Praia da Amoreira seduz algarvios e turistas pelo seu sistema estuarino-lagunar de grande beleza natural, resultado da confluência entre a praia marítima, propriamente dita, e a foz da Ribeira de Aljezur. Com a baixa-mar, a paisagem torna-se arrebatadora, pondo a descoberto formações rochosas e extensas lagoas no areal dourado. Na continuidade do vasto areal, para o interior, observa-se um longo campo dunar, que é conhecido como os “medos da Amoreira”, evoluindo, depois, para um habitat de sapal. No que concerne à fauna, a diversidade de aves que elegem esta zona como corredor de passagem ou de paragem obrigatória, entre a Europa e o Norte de África, é sublime: a águia-de-bonelli, o falcão peregrino, a gralha-de-bico-vermelho ou a cegonha branca. Percursos pedestres, fotografia de natureza, surf, bodyboard, pesca lúdica… É só escolher a atividade que mais lhe agrada, porque esta praia tem de tudo um pouco. Com o protetor solar numa mão e uma garrafa de água bem fresquinha na outra, estenda-se ao comprido em cima de uma toalhinha e, durante uma calorosa tarde de outono, desfrute na companhia dos seus “sem eira, nem beira” na Praia da Amoreira.

Wanderwege, Naturfotografie, Wellenreiten, Bodyboarden, Sportfischerei ... suchen Sie sich einfach etwas aus, was zu Ihnen passt, dieser Strand bietet für jeden etwas. Oder strecken Sie sich einfach mit der Sonnencreme in der einen Hand und einer Flasche kaltem Wasser in der anderen auf Ihrem Handtuch aus und genießen Sie einen warmen Herbstnachmittag am Amoreira Strand.

To make the most of the warmth still being felt in the Algarve, we’ve taken a trip to the wonderful beach of Amoreira, in the municipality of Aljezur. So, forget swapping round your wardrobes for a moment and bring your bathing gear as we head for the beach. Stood not too far from the town of Aljezur, Praia da Amoreia wins the hearts of local and tourists alike through its tidal inlet system of stunning beauty, resulting from the confluence of the beach proper and the mouth of the Ribeira de Aljezur. At low tide, the scenery truly amazes, revealing a host of rocky formations and pools in the sandy river bed and banks. The sand heads curiously inland, producing a large dune landscape, known as “medos da Amoreira”, before developing into marshland. When it comes to fauna, the diversity of birds choosing this area as a passageway or obligatory stopover on their route from Europe to Africa is a joy to behold: Bonelli’s eagle, the peregrine falcon, the red-billed chough, and the white stork. Walking trails, photography, surfing, body-boarding, fishing, or simply floating down the river towards the sea... the choice of activities is plentiful. You can park close to the ocean, and venture inland on foot along the sandy banks, or park higher up the river, and set up camp on the unusual, yet exceptionally broad river beach of white sands, and spend your time exploring this hidden treasure of the Algarve.

O fruto da amendoeira tem 56% de gorduras, 21% de proteínas, 7% de hidratos de carbono, possuindo uma proporção elevada de ácidos gordos monoinsaturados e um teor diminuto em ácidos gordos saturados, o que, segundo alguns estudos, contribui para a diminuição do nível de colesterol no sangue. Die mediterrane Ernährung besteht hauptsächlich aus den Zutaten Natives Olivenöl Extra, Fisch, Gemüse, Früchte und Trockenfrüchte. Somit handelt es sich hierbei um eine Ernährung, die reich an gesunden Fetten und Omega-3-Fettsäuren ist. Mit einer treuen Anhängerschaft in Ländern wie Griechenland, Italien und Spanien, setzt diese Ernährung zudem auf den moderaten Genuss von Milchprodukten (vor allem Käse und Joghurt) und Rotwein, der an sich schon der Vorbeugung von Krebs dient und den Cholesterinspiegel senkt. A healthy diet It’s hard to resist the temptations of food rich in fats and sugars, especially when we equate them with pleasure and great flavours. But, we all know there are healthier alternatives out there, diets that are good for the body and mind and that actually taste great too – the Mediterranean diet, for example. With extra virgin olive oil as its main ingredient, the Mediterranean diet fundamentally involves eating plenty of fish, vegetables, legumes, fruit and nuts. As such it is a diet rich in healthy fats, fatty acids and omega 3. Followed in countries such as Greece, Italy and Spain, and to a certain extent in Portugal, this diet also features the consumption, albeit moderate, of dairy products (mainly cheese and yoghurts) and red wine, which on its own is already known to fight cancer and reduce cholesterol. Red meats and sweet treats, although not prohibited, should be eaten in moderation – being sensible is key. Almonds fit perfectly into the scope of the Mediterranean diet, as a healthy drupe figuring in recipes across the region. The almond contains 56% fat, 21% protein, 7% carbohydrates, and a high proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids and a low content of saturated fatty acids. This, according to studies, promotes reductions in blood cholesterol levels. Additionally, almond oil is rich in natural antioxidants and helps prevent cellular ageing.
