hickpeas were originally cultivated in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. They are also known by garbanzo beans and have spread their culinary influence to areas all over the world. They are featured prominently in Italian, Greek, Indian, Middle Eastern, Spanish and Portuguese cuisine. One cup of cooked chickpeas contains 269 calories, 45 grams of carbohydrate, 15 grams of protein, 13 grams of dietary fiber, 4 grams of fat and 0 grams of cholesterol. A one-cup serving of raw chickpeas provides 50% of daily potassium needs, 2% vitamin A, 21% calcium, 13% vitamin C, 69% iron, 2% sodium, 55% vitamin B-6 and 57% magnesium. Additionally, chickpeas contain vitamin K, folate, phosphorus, zinc, copper, manganese, choline and selenium.

Besides being an excellent vegan and gluten-free source of protein and fiber, chickpeas also contain exceptional levels of iron, vitamin B-6 and magnesium. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and are extremely important in ensuring that the body functions properly. Some, known as nonessential amino acids, can be produced by the body when they are needed. Essential amino acids, however, cannot be made in the body and, therefore, must be consumed in the diet. Most non-animal sources of protein, including chickpeas, lack the essential amino acid methionine, while whole grains lack lysine. The combination of legumes with whole grains such as brown rice or whole-wheat bread or pasta produces a complete protein that contains all of the essential amino acids.

FOCUS FACTORY Chickpeas have been associated with some healthy benefits such as: 1) Diabetes: type 1 diabetics who consume highfiber diets have lower blood glucose levels and type 2 diabetics may have improved blood sugar, lipids and insulin levels. 2) Bone health: because of the the iron, phosphate, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc and vitamin K content chickpeas contribute to building and maintaining bone structure and strength. Manganese, iron and zinc play crucial roles in the production and maturation of collagen. 3) Blood pressure: Maintaining a low-sodium intake is essential to lowering blood pressure, however increasing potassium intake may be just as important because of its vasodilation effects.

reduces chronic inflammation. 8) Digestion and regularity: Because of their highfiber content which is mostly insoluble, chickpeas help to prevent constipation and promote regularity for a healthy digestive tract. 9) Weight management and satiety: Dietary fibers are commonly recognized as important factors in weight management and loss by functioning as “bulking agents” in the digestive system. These compounds increase satiety and reduce ppetite, making you feel fuller for longer and thereby lowering your overall calorie intake. source: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/280244.php http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/legumes-and-legume-products/4327/2

4) Heart health: High fiber, potassium, vitamin C and vitamin B-6 content, coupled with the lack of cholesterol in chickpeas, all support heart health. Chickpeas contain significant amounts of fiber, which helps lower the total amount of cholesterol in the blood, thereby decreasing the risk of heart disease. 5) Cancer: Selenium is a mineral that is not present in most fruits and vegetables, but can be found in chickpeas. It plays a role in liver enzyme function, and helps detoxify some cancercausing compounds in the body. Additionally, selenium prevents inflammation and also decreases tumor growth rates.2 Chickpeas also contain folate, which plays a role in DNA synthesis and repair, thus preventing the formation of cancer cells from mutations in the DNA. Saponins, which are phytochemicals present in chickpeas, prevent cancer cells from multiplying and spreading throughout the body. Vitamin C functions as a powerful antioxidant and helps protect cells against free radical damage. 6) Cholesterol: Research shows that including chickpeas in the diet lowers the amount of lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the blood. 7) Inflammation: Choline is a very important and versatile nutrient in chickpeas that help with sleep, muscle movement, learning and memory. Choline also helps to maintain the structure of c ellular membranes, aids in the transmission of nerve impulses, assists in the absorption of fat and

What is the best part of being on the COVER of Focus Factory? The best part of being on the COVER of Focus Factory Magazine is that is my first time ever making it to a magazine cover. When did you decide you wanted to be a model and why? I decided to become a model 6 months ago after I finished my studies. Modeling has always been my dream, but I decided to wait to pursuit it because I wanted to finish my degree in communications first. Describe your first modeling shoot? My first modeling shoot was with a photographer based in Miami named Michael McGinn. He discovered me in a Zumba class and offered me a TFP shoot. We shot 3 different styles; fashion, street wear and beauty. I remembered Michael mentioned me after he started editing the pictures that it was difficult to make a selection because most of them came out great. What’s the craziest thing that happened to you while on set? My boobs always fall out of place (laughs) Ah! One time a very well known public figure stepped into the set and I did not recognize him. What are your educational backgrounds? I have a degree in communications and mass media, and a minor in film and editing. I’m also a professional dancer (flamenco, hip-hop and salsa) And finally I did some scuba diving and photography classes.

What scares you the most? Failure is my biggest fear. What quirky or fun talents do you have? I consider a very creative person, if you give me a minute to brainstorm I would come up with something very original and innovative. What is your sexiest body part? My eyes. (yes, laughs! Maybe my butt too) What would you tell new and upcoming models? I’m s startup as well but I will tell them not to give up, to be careful with indecent proposals and not to listen to the naysayers. Lastly, what do you think of Focus Factory Magazine and what would it mean to be a part of this publication? It is an honor for me to be part of this Magazine and making it to the cover. FFM is a great magazine that helps new emergent talents to get exposure. I would recommend it to all artist out there.

How to Regain Power in your

relationships By: Kari Nautique

We’ve all seen that one relationship that, from an outsider’s perspective, looks doomed. Person A is following Person B around and doing everything in their power to please their significant other. Person B, however, seems indifferent to their partner’s efforts. In fact, you’ve probably even been on one (or both) sides of this dilemma at some point in your life. It happens all the time in the dating world, and although it’s disheartening to be a part of, there are steps that you can take to balance the scales. Usually, you see this in relationships where one person cares more about the other. Mutual respect and attraction make for a balanced, healthy relationship. However, when you start to see one person putting more effort in than the other, you’ll see that delicate balance shift. Sometimes it can be as easy as having an intimate discussion with your partner to make sure you’re both on the same level. It’s easy for a person to seem distant because of internal stress, and that can be translated as distance of the heart. To make sure you’re both on the same page, you have to first open up a line of communication; miscommunications are the most common issues a couple can face, and they can be Page

When did you decide you wanted to be a model and why? I’ve always had a passion for modeling since I was a little girl. I am from a small town in GA and I was not sure how to get involved in modeling. It was when I moved to Texas in 2013 when I decided to really pursue modeling as a career. I now travel all over the world to model! Describe your first modeling shoot? Hmmmm... Awkward. I had no idea what I was doing. The first photographer I worked with was amazing and really helped me with posing and facial expressions. What’s the craziest thing that happened to you while on set? Modeling as a mermaid would probably be the craziest/coolest experience. (Besides getting knocked over by waves of the ocean) but totally worth it! Thank you to the Sea Nymph Effect for allowing me to wear your awesome tails!!

EDITORS CHOICE We had the opportunity to work in the past with Michelle Lewin. During her time in the fitness world she has elevated her to an inspirational fit model and has help many others achieve their goals through her videos on Instagram and Facebook. Michelle is a true fitness enthusiast and a hard-core dedicated worker of her body; so much that she refuses to be Photo-shopped. Oh yes, she completely rejects the fact of her body being worked on digitally for a final product of herself. Maybe a hair or two out of place is ok. But when it comes to her face, b ody or even her synonymous eye catching freckles, you will get an ear full from her and she will not accept it. She believes that if you need to fix something on her, then she’d rather fix it herself. Michelle wants people to see her for who she is, even with all of her corky ways and her flaws. She is comfortable in her own skin and is not afraid to show it off. Through the power of social media, athletes like Michelle, have been able to reach out to a massive audience on a real-time basis. No gimmicks, no tricks. You will get a real insight as to what the athletes want to show you. Some types of information you will get comes from fashion tips, to eating habits, to fitness workouts and even your occasional bloopers or funny skits. In a way these forms of true expression is why people gravitate to them and follow them like a zombie nation. The fitness world has created super stars and mega athletes by doing what they love to do: Eat right and stay fit. All they do is share their experiences through social media to their loyal fans. Michelle is a pinnacle example of how someone can be themselves and be accepted and followed by the masses just for being comfortable in their own skin. We look forward in Michelle Lewin’s success as well as many other athletes we look up to and by paying it forward they help each one of us become a better version of ourselves.

What is your family background? I grew up with my mother and my Italian stepfather from I was one years old until I was 15 years old. After that I grew up with my single mom. When did you decide you wanted to be a fitness model and why? I never decided, it just happened. I was doing some glamour modeling, but I just loved working out a bit too much. So suddenly the requests was from fitness mags, gym wear companies and supplements. Describe your first modeling shoot? It was in a exclusive whore hotel in Caracas, Venezuela. Sounds aweful, but the decorations there are pretty amazing. Kinda like a night club. So did a quite awesome shoot there, and the pics were amazing.

Is modeling in bikini and fashion different than fitness? Why? Yes, it is, but since I’m used to both I implement both styles in every shoot. I don’t like the still fitness stuff some strict girls do. I got curves and I worked hard for them, so better show it off. How do you plan for a workout and/or training session? I don’t plan, I just do. It’s what I do so it’s quite much routine involved. What’s the craziest thing that happened to you while on set? I went with Vengemedia to Jamaica. I was not really prepared for what it was all about. It was about 50 models and 2 photographers. I was pretty cool in the beginnings, I let everybody start and I was watching. But the resort we shot in was all about nudity and sex, so the model got naked withing 5 minutes and the hotel guests went on it in public. That was an experience like no other, it was fun! And no doubt, the craziest things I’ve seen during a set. What are some things you would like to accomplish in the fitness industry? One of my bigger goals is to be a part of the change that is going on right now: skinny is on the way out and fit is taking over. I am so happy to be a part of this. No one can get sick or get anorexia by trying to get a body like mine. Who inspires you in the fitness world and why? I had my idols like Larissa Reis, but I have to concentrate to be the best of me so now I have no real inspirations. What aspects of a photoshoot do you dislike? When there´s no connection with the photographer. You might get good pics, but never as good as when you have that connection. But what I REALLY dislike is that when I see good pics in the camera but the result is destroyed in over photoshopping. I refuse to post pics like that.

Who’s your celebrity crush and why? I have this crush on older male actors. But since I meet many of them nowdays at events, it’s not the same anymore.

What would you tell new and upcoming fitness models? There are no need to copy anyone to think you will become like him or her. No copies have ever made it to the top. Do your thing and be the best of you! Have someone helping you picking the right videos and pictures. The trick is not how you want the fans to see you, it’s all about what the fans want to see. And that difference is in many cases very big. Lastly, what do you think of Focus Factory Magazine and what would it mean to be a part of this publication? Love the concept to work as inspiration! When did you decide you wanted to be a model and why? Modeling has always been a dream of mine but last summer is when I decided to pursue it seriously! Since I work and go to school during most of the year, I always dedicate my summers to a personal passion project. This time I chose Modeling. I actually did some modeling when I first moved to AZ but stopped to focus on school. This past summer was an opportunity for me to rekindle my passion and so I went for it! I started doing competitions and photo shoots, and I realized how much I genuinely enjoyed modeling. It can be hard work but that’s half of the fun! Describe your first modeling shoot? My first modeling shoot was during the Vietlifestyles Top Model Competition. I remember walking in and seeing some of the most beautiful women I had ever seen! They were finished with hair and make up and waiting to be shot. I was very nervous because my first shoot ever was happening during a modeling competition :O ! I was modeling in a bikini against a white backdrop. There was a fan for wind and I just remember being anxious since the other contestants were watching! In the end it worked out because I won Most Photogenic!!

FOCUS FACTORY What’s the craziest thing that happened to you while on set? I was in the Dominican Republic doing a photo shoot with two different photographers and another model. We were shooting at a private park that had gorgeous bays of water weaved into different parts of the rain forest. During one my photo shoot the photographer asked me if I would be open to modeling with the other photographer -who was model material :P! I was surprised but of course, I said yes since I am always up for a challenge. We had to balance against each other on the tiniest rock, but we definitely got some beautiful photos! What are your educational backgrounds? I am currently pursuing a marketing degree at the W. P. Carey school of Business at Arizona State University! Student by day, model by night ;) What is your sexiest body part? My sexiest body part would have to be my eyes! They are captivating and full of emotion <3 What would you tell new and upcoming models? Do what works! Of course, confidence is key but do what works for you! If faking it until you make it is what will get you your best shot use it and don’t hesitate. I am a huge music lover so I always bring my personal Bluetooth speaker to every shoot. I make playlist and pick songs that help get me in the mood, music works for me! Also, practice makes perfect. The more you shoot the better you will get at modeling! Lastly, what do you think of Focus Factory Magazine and what would it mean to be a part of this publication? “FITNESS BY THE MIND” By Brandon Russell

Few may remember much from the lessons in high school biology class. If you were awake, phrases like “only the strong survive” or “survival of the fittest” are probably reminiscent of something your professor harped on. Fitness in it’s purest form is the ability for an organism to thrive in a particular environment. To ensure our survival in modern times, we head to our nearest health club and work tirelessly to develop our bodies to be stronger, more conditioned, flexible, and, of course, appealing to that special someone. We focus primarily on the attributes of the physical body and often forget about what ultimately controls it all: the mind. Our brain dictates the way we move, the rate your heart beats, how we think and react to the world around us, and so much more. Yet few grasp the importance of or the know-how to Page

46

FEB 2016 / FOCUS FACTORY MAGAZINE

train it. I am not going to sit here and pitch you on some memory building mobile app. They have their place, but I am focusing on a practice that is fast becoming a resource not only in yoga studios, but in corporations, schools, the military and the like: meditation. Without delving too deep into Meditation 101, I like to think of this practice as the premier way to train the mind. It is similar in the sense that weight lifting strengthens the muscle. Through meditation, the brain is actually being rewired; a concept known as neuroplasticity. As you begin to shift your feelings and thoughts toward a more pleasant outlook, your brain begins to transform, making this way of thought more of a default. According to Fadel Zeidan, PhD, a research

fellow in the department of neurobiology and anatomy at Wake Forest School of Medicine, “we have different pathways that can facilitate different behaviors.” Therefore, if we tend to focus on the negative and overuse the regions of the brain associated with depression, the pathways for happiness will become weaker as a result. He goes on to explain that “our lifestyle and behavior can significantly influence the way that our brain is shaped.” The technique of meditation is practiced in countless ways. Just as in strength training, there are a variety of modalities that can elicit similar results. My focus falls on a realm of meditation known as mindfulness. Mindfulness meditation encourages the practitioner to observe wandering thoughts as they drift in and out of the mind. The goal is not to get involved with

FOCUS FACTORY

the thoughts or to judge them, but simply to be aware of each mental note as it comes into awareness. Through mindfulness meditation, you can see how your thoughts manifest and affect your emotional state. So are you mindful or is your ‘mind full’? Do you constantly have thoughts running uncontrollably through your head. Whether you have a deadline for work due or you have to remember to pick up groceries at the store or have a friend going through a tough time, our mind is constantly flooded with a barrage of reflections, speculations, apprehensions, and so forth. The practice of mindfulness helps to create some space in your head so you can, as the Buddhists say, ‘respond’ rather than simply ‘react.’ In the Buddhist view, you cannot control what comes up in your head; it all emerges out of a mysterious void. We spend a lot of time judging ourselves harshly for feelings that we had no role in summoning in the first place. Relax though! Do not add this stress to the pile. There is hope, because YOU have the ability to control it. You cannot curb the thoughts that arise, but you can manage how you handle them. The ultimate goal then, is

to get a grip on your mind and begin to take hold of the reigns. Now for the important question: how does this relate to fitness? If you are able to get a grip on the madness in your skull, or as best said ‘get your mind right’, there are some scientifically demonstrated benefits. The practice of mindfulness has been shown to increase in the body’s ability to heal and a shift from a tendency to use the right prefrontal cortex instead of the left prefrontal cortex. In other words, we have the ability to shift our thoughts from depression and anxiety towards happiness, relaxation, and emotional balance, respectively. Along with this shift, research also suggests that these and other changes translate to lower levels of stress and anxiety and a greater overall health. At a physiological level this can include, among other things, a boosted immune system, lower blood pressure, and assistance in combating medical conditions, like psoriasis. Being stressed mentally or emotionally has an ill effect on your body physically. Chronically perceived stress creates a poor internal environment and is detrimental not only to cardiovascular health, but also to dreams of a stronger, leaner

physique. How can you do this on your own? Start with a single minute of meditation, sitting in silence or focusing on your breathing; then gradually increase your time. There are many great resources out there for beginners to help started! The best part is that results can begin to show within weeks. You do not need to meditate for years on end to start reaping the benefits: One study showed brain transformations after just 8 weeks of regular meditation. The smallest of steps can lead to the biggest of changes. There is a reason that businesspeople, students and the armed forces have embraced meditation. It is far from magic or any sort of mysticism. It is just exercise. Fitness for your mind. If you do the right amount of reps, certain things will happen, reliably, and predictably. One of those things, according to the research, is that your brain and body will change in positive ways. Think of meditation as ‘bicep curls for the brain’. Make a conscious effort to train your psyche and most importantly, GET YOUR MIND RIGHT!

What are some things you would like to accomplish? In modeling I have two things that I would like to accomplish this year or in the near future. I would like to make Maxim and Playboy international covers. Who inspires you? My favorite model is Victoria’s Secret angel Candice Swanepoel. I love her style and her performance. She has that effortless beauty. It seems like she looks sexy at all times, no matter what she is wearing or doing. I would love to have that. Where do you see your career in 5 years? My long-term dream is to open a beauty center where clients would have access to an array of specialists offering both inner and outer transformations. What quirky or fun talents do you have? I am a figure skater. For several years I was part of the Theater On Ice team. We had competed in National and International Theater on Ice competitions and did multiple shows. What is your sexiest body part? I am most proud of my face. I think it’s something that distinguishes me from other models. There are a lot of girls in the business with great bodies, but it’s a face that people remember.

THE IMPACT OF ADAPTATION From herbs to your physical modes, why adaptation is the key to greater performance and growth. Written by David Morin

In the immortal words of Bruce Lee, “water is put in a cup, it becomes the cup”, this resounding statement about adaptation is no doubt the Zen approach that most Athletes refer to as “The Zone!” The latest scientific data in pharmacology and sports physiology yields improved methods on tapping into the adaptive responses.

An adaptogen must have a normalizing effect, ie. countering or preventing disturbances to homeostasis brought about by stressors. Moreover, it must be innocuous with a broad range of therapeutic effects without causing any major side effects. The adaptogen concept does not fit easily into the western model of medicine.

Not only has adaptive style training modes produced fantastic strides in performance, health and body composition(crossfit)(P90X), but a relatively new class of Herbs called “Adaptogens” can elevate your workouts past stubborn plateaus to new zones!

The repeated administration of adaptogens gives an effect analogous to that produced by repeated physical exercise by a transition from homeostasis to heterostasis. The effect is mainly related to the HPA-axis (Hypothalamic-PituitaryAdrenal-axis). Repeated administration of adaptogens has been shown to increase endurance for long distance runners, cross-country skiers etc., or to a more rapid recovery from a stressor.

An adaptogen is a metabolic regulator which increases the ability of an organism to adapt to environmental factors, and to avoid damage from such factors. Environmental factors can be either physiological, such as injury or aging, or psychological, such as anxiety.

The stress protective effect by repeated intake is not the result of inhibition of stress response, but of adaptive changes in the organism to the repeated stress-mimetic effect of the active of the drug. Adaptogens

are stress agonists and not stressantagonists. Administration of adaptogens in a single dose is relevant when a rapid response to stress and strain is required. This effect is associated with the sympathetic nervous system. Suitable adaptogens suitable for human consumption are siberian ginseng, rhodiola rosea and schisandra berry, which can also be used for repeated administration. Panax ginseng on the other hand gives adaptive effects only after repeated use for one to four weeks. Stimulants have been the widely accepted for many years as the “go to” in a situation of increased physical and psychological demand. So lets look how adaptogens stack up head to head with stimulants. Below are important differences between the stimulating effect of adaptogens and other stimulants of the central nervous system as summarized.

In contrast to conventional stimulants, such as caffeine, nicotine, amphetamine, etc., which have serious possible side effects and a particular potential for abuse with long term use,[17]adaptogens by definition and from numerous studies do not exhibit such negative effects.[1][2][3] However, they are much less efficacious. Adaptogens are absent from mainstream medicine, but are popular in energy drinks.[18] On the other hand, stimulants are widely used in mainstream medicine to treat conditions like narcolepsy, obesity, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. [17] One plant adaptogen that is derived from Rhodiola rosea might exhibit

a small degree of regulation of high-altitude sleep disorders and improve sleep quality. Plant adaptogens stimulate the nervous system by mechanisms which are totally different from those of conventional stimulants as associated with metabolic regulation of various elements of the stress system and modulation of stimulants-response comply. A clear correlation can be drawn from the benefits of adaptogenic herbs and various modes of physical training, long term achievement and goal acquisition. In my personal experience as a pro skateboarder, trainer and physique athlete, the workout your body doesn’t know is the one that will make it grow. The art of adapting is now a more

conscious tool the human species can use now more than ever to precisely and methodically maintain optimal longevity and neuromuscular connectivity. The Nine primary modalities of crossfit have forged elite fitness while touting the legitimate claim of “Fittest on Earth!” Bottom line is that regardless of physical skill level or natural ability mixing things up is the real key to mastering the bodies reactions. The real challenge is not weather or not the body can do it, but that the mind can create the constant change needed to grow. Adapt and overcome, “Be Water my friend.”

Is modeling in bikini and fashion different than fitness? Why? Modeling bikini and fashion is very different than fitness because for fitness the height requirement doesn’t matter. Usually for fashion/bikini they like taller females and being 5ft doesn’t help. How do you plan for a workout and/or training session? Mondays & Thursdays are my leg days, Tuesday & Fridays are Shoulders, Wednesday is back, Saturday is yoga, and Sunday is rest. I try to do cardio atleast 5 days a week. What’s the craziest thing that happened to you while on set? I train early in the mornings around 5am so I’m pretty much still half asleep while getting ready. One day I woke up late for my training session and grabbed the wrong pair of yoga pants. The yoga pants I grabbed were see through so you were able to could see EVERYTHING. What are some things you would like to accomplish in the fitness industry? I would like to compete as much as possible and earn my pro card.

Never compare yourself to others! Everyone is different and appreciate the body you have. Focus on being better than the person you were yesterday!

POLINA SITNOVA Hometown: St. Petersburg, Russia Currently Resides: St. Louis MI Age: 21 Height: 5’ 7”

When did you decide you wanted to be a model and why? Ever since I was little I’ve wanted to make a name for myself and leave an imprint on existence. I knew that I did not want to live and die without making my presence known. I first found passion in photography, then at 15 I started attending modeling and acting classes because I enjoyed being in front of the camera more. Ive always been very creative and artistic, and I like that I can create art and express myself through modeling while also making a career out of it and gaining publicity.

What’s the craziest thing that happened to you while on set? Once at a paid workshop, a beginner photographer asked me to put on a Halloween witch costume to pose in while holding a plastic jack o’lantern. Lol. Not very crazy, but definitely awkwardly memorable.

Describe your first modeling shoot? When I went to my first shoot, I told the photographer I had shot a few times before so that I wouldn’t seem like an amature, lol. Neither of us really knew what we were doing, so the pictures didn’t turn out but it was a good time regardless and took some pressure off the industry I was stepping into.

What are some things you would like to accomplish? I would love to gain large enough of a fan base and audience to have a voice in this world, to have my thoughts/opinions heard and appreciated, and to make a positive impact on our society. I also aim for more publications so I can sent them to my grandma in Russia :)

What are your educational backgrounds? I moved a lot growing up and went to several different schools. I graduated high school a year early and am currently persuing a degree in interior design.

Who inspires you? My mom is my main inspiration. She has overcome unfathomable struggles to provide for my family and I, and is the strongest person I know. What scares you the most? Not many things scare me. I’m a big risk taker and optimist. My main fear is dying without having lived my life to the fullest. What quirky or fun talents do you have? I can cook, paint, play 3 instruments and have been fluent in 4 languages throughout my lifetime.
