KNOW EGO The socially learned crutch slowing your Journey to TRUE Success! Written by David Morin

I

f you have ever been good at anything, or possess a talent, the chances of you getting praised are pretty high.

As a young man I was into team sport’s, like most kids born in Europe soccer was my first sport After I moved from the UK to California, I watched surfing and the traditional team sports, baseball, basketball and football. I really liked basketball as I could practice by myself. In doing so you get to know yourself. If boredom is the mother of creativity and repetition is the mother of skill, all this time to myself I could do whatever I wanted and video games were not really ...well, impressive yet. I attended school and was top pick amongst my peers, I soon realized all my alone time made me sought after, and valued. I noticed that skills were like a commodity, later in life I learned all of life itself is in some sense, a commodity. Personally, I love to help others and winning only meant something to me when everyone including the losers played with spirit and determination, aka respect. I had already seen the ROCKY movies and felt Heart was what it was ALL about. Just like Rocky in his films, I was successful and proved to be the “GO TO” guy, Great right? Until the day you let all of your teammates down; the time you don’t win the game for them.

“You’re the best David? what happened?” My school mates would say. I tried not to believe the hype when people said I was the best, so when they said I was no good anymore I used the same mentality. Now, let me say that a compliment is a kind gesture and should always be received with a thank you. With that said, we all fall short at times. The truth is found in not believing your own hype. Ronda Rousey for example, she had never faced a smart, experienced capable fighter like Holly Holm. Ronda was beaten by her own lack of humility & a fighter that was amazingly prepared Humility is the necessary mentally to effectively address your own shortcomings & weaknesses. This allows for proper corrections & improvements that generate the opportunity for personal growth. If you fail to have humility to achieve personal growth don’t worry, failure will eventually come into play to teach you the same opportunities for personal growth, it just won’t be on your terms. Never be afraid to fail, failure is not a real fear at all, it is perceived and

is based on a false sense of reality and anxiety about change. If you lived to see another day, then you’re still a winner. If your hearts still beating, then you aren’t beaten! Failure is necessary for progress, the willingness to keep trying is the true mark of a winner. The Ego is tricky, as you acquire perceived social power & influence by it, it’s “power” can be taken even more quickly from us. “Pride cometh before the fall.” Suffering from loss is proportionate to the stock you’ve invested in the false sense of ego power. Most of what we have in the way of ability is inherent.. meaning, someone paid some dues for you, a coach, parent or sibling helped you get an “EDGE” just for being born. Be thankful, NO EGO. The native Indians had their homes taken from them because they had no knowledge of Ego. In their purity they felt that they possessed nothing in this life except the tribe. The Ego may say,”well we kicked their ass and that’s why we deserve to own the land”. One trip to the casino and you’ll see the roulette tables are always turning. Stick that in your peace pipe!

The Athlete knows that place inside where no thought is required, just action. It’s called the “ZONE” a lot like Zen in it’s no thinking about your thoughts, idea. I understand it as more of a feeling,a freedom, and flow, a place of no ego. Since fear of being socially accepted/integrated by our peers in adolescence is paramount to most young peoples happiness, the ego develops it’s tactics to attain it’s attention. Entrenched in the competition , need to win and dominate others, the ego mind cuts itself off from the source of it’s talents while blinding the truth about the development of the universal (collective conscious) mind connection from whence it came, aka Team mind being the next stage in the athletes development. If you’re in an individual sport this still applies to you also, when you raise the bar you inspire the best out of others efforts. If your skills are based on the truth of all your labors and training then no doubt you are prepared to take the pressure. Never underestimate the skills of your opponent, if you do...it’s your Ego and not your opponent that has had the victory over you.

YOUR NEW BEST CARB! Written by: Carolina Villalon

T

he food community has us believing and fearing the so needed carbohydrates or lovingly called “CARBS. We are led to believe they are the enemy and the reason for the overweight epidemic in our country. A small percentage of that is true, unfortunately they do not elaborate further or educate us better to understand the impact different carbs have on our bodies. Carbohydrates are one of the food groups that we find along with protein and fat. Carbohydrates are typically where we get the most of our energy from to perform our daily activities. Carbs are broken down into simple and complex carbs. The main difference between the two is in how quickly it is digested and absorbed - as well as its chemical structure. Simple carbohydrates are called simple sugars. Sugars are found in a variety of natural food sources including fruit, vegetables and milk, and give food a sweet taste. But they also raise blood glucose levels quickly and this is what we do not want. The pancreas can only release a certain amount of insulin to control glucose spikes in the body and when that is depleted any

excess glucose in the body will be stored as fat, and that is what will make you fat! Complex carbs on the other hand take longer to break down in the body and therefore the pancreas has time to perform a steady release of insulin minimizing excess glucose that the body will require to store. Green vegetables, whole grains and starchy vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, and pumpkin, beans, lentils, and peas are some complex carbs, but my favorite out of this list has to be the sweet potato. Sweet potatoes are not only super versatile because they can take on savory as well as sweet applications but are great for you nutritionally. Sweet potatoes are low in sodium, very low in saturated fat and cholesterol and a good source of dietary fiber. Sweet potatoes contain high in vitamin A (a large one contains more than 100% of the daily recommended intake), vitamin B5, B6, vitamin C and manganese, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin and potassium. Orange-fleshed sweet potatoes may be one of na-

ture’s unsurpassed sources of beta-carotene. It can be helpful to include some fat in your sweet potatocontaining meals if you want to enjoy the full betacarotene benefits of this root vegetable; a minimum of 3-5 grams of fat per meal significantly increases our uptake of beta-carotene from sweet potatoes. 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil provides 3.5 grams of fat. 1 cup of sweet potatoes has only 180 calories, 41 grams of carbs, 0 fat, 4 grams of protein, 13 grams of sugar and 7 grams of fi er. they can be found in white, yellow, pink and purple varieties. Some benefits to consuming sweet potatoes include: * Anti-infl mmatory properties - so your abdomen area looks tighter and slimmer * Blood clotting - aids in the ability of the body to close off wounds and stop loss of blood. * Blood sugar regulation and energy - unlike other starchy foods that elevate blood sugar rapidly after they’re consumed sweet potatoes will help steady the levels of blood sugar, this means you won’t get blood-sugar spikes, but you will get a steady amount of energy. * Antibacterial and antifungal properties this doesn’t need much explaining, just know that it helps keep your immune system armed and ready for any for any attack. * Antioxidant powerhouse - due to its large content of vitamin A it contains essential antioxidants that our bodies need. * Anti-aging properties - due to the antioxidant content it helps in maintaining us looking and feeling young. * Eyesite care - because of its beta carotene levels it helps with eyesight deterioration. * Heart health - B6 vitamin helps break down homocysteine, which is a substance that contributes to the hardening of blood vessels and arteries. * Blood Pressure - because of its potassium

content it lowers blood pressure by maintaining fluid balance. * Appetite suppressant - because of the levels of manganese, it helps the body metabolize carbohydrates and thus stabilize your appetite. * Mood regulator - due to magnesium, the go-to mineral for destressing. It promotes relaxation, calmness and a good mood, as well as artery, blood, bone, muscle and nerve health. * Skin and hair - vitamin A may help protect against sun damage, and vitamins C and E are well-known for their beauty benefits. They encourage healthy, glowing skin and collagen growth. * Digestion - because of the dietary fiber, sweet potatoes helps the body maintain a healthy digestive tract and regulates digestion. When buying sweet potatoes consider this: 1. Choose sweet potatoes that are firm and do not have any cracks, bruises or soft spots 2. Avoid those that are displayed in the refrigerated section of the produce department since cold temperature negatively alters their taste. 3. Sweet potatoes should be stored in a cool, dark and well-ventilated place, where they will keep fresh for up to ten days. 4. keep your sweet potatoes loose (not in a plastic bag, but if desired, a brown paper bag with multiple air holes punched in it will work) 5. Store them in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated cupboard away from sources of excess heat (like the stove). Now that you have learned a bit about this miracle carb are you ready to start incorporating it into your daily diet? As I mentioned before, sweet potatoes are super versatile, they can be incorporated into pies, muffins, souffle, as side dishes as snacks and even in salads. I am happy to share a couple recipes with you to get you started and give you a sneak peek at how wonderful this ingredient is! SWEET POTATO PROTEIN PANCAKES Serves: 6 small pancakes / 3 Medium pancakes Prep time: 20 minutes* Cook time: 10 - 15 minutes Ingredients ½ cup sweet potatoes, boiled and peeled ½ cup coconut milk (this is where we add the fat to ensure better absorption of nutrients) * teaspoon baking powder * teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons oat flou ½ scoop protein powder, vanilla flavor preferre

Preparation 1. Slice your sweet potatoes and boil them for about 20 minutes (the bigger the slice the longer it will take to cook). 2. Once potatoes are cooked and peeled add them to a blender along with the rest of the ingredients and blend well. 3. Warm up pan, grill, skillet or pancake maker. Once warm spray non-stick cooking oil and add about ¼ cup of the mix (for smaller pancakes) or about ½ cup for larger pancakes. 4. Cook on one side for about 3 minutes or until the pancake starts “bubbling” (you can see little holes forming in the mix). Slowly and carefully turn over and cook on the other side for another 2-3 minutes. Repeat as necessary to finish the mix 5. Serve and top with your favorite nuts, fruits, syrup or butter. *You may cut prep time by having pre-cooked sweet potatoes on hand SPICY SKINNY BAKED ‘TATOES Serves: 2 Prep time: 12 minutes Cook time: 30 - 35 minutes Ingredients 1 large sweet potato 2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) 1 teaspoon maple syrup 1 tablespoon smoked paprika powder ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper powder, or to taste ¼ teaspoon chilli pepper powder, or to taste ¼ teaspoon chipotle pepper powder, or to taste 1 tablespoon parsley flake Sea salt, to taste Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 400° F degrees. 2. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them longwise like french fries. 3. In a large bowl add your sweet potatoes and coat them with 2 tablespoon of EVOO. 4. Sprinkle paprika and toss to coat evenly (I prefer to use my hands so powder doesn’t fall into the bowl). 5. Drizzle 1 more tablespoon of EVOO and sprinkle the cayenne, chili and chipotle powder, toss to coat well. 6. Drizzle maple syrup, and toss. Sprinkle parsley flakes and toss one more time to ensure all the fries are evenly coated. 7. Place the fries directly onto an oven wire rack in opposite direction of the wires so they don’t fall

through. Make sure to have parchment paper, aluminum foil or a tray underneath for oil and spices that may fall off. 8. Cook potatoes for about 30 minutes or until tender. A little bit of char is desired. 9. Remove from the oven, place on a bowl or plate and sprinkle sea salt as desired. Pair with your favorite piece of chicken, fish or beef and enjoy! What is your family background? I grew up on a farm in a small town. When did you decide you wanted to be a model and why? I have always wanted to be a model, ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to be in a magazine. It just seemed so fun and glamorous. Describe your first modeling shoot My first shoot I was a bit nervous. I was fortunate to work with a talented photographer who knew how to make me feel comfortable. I still love those pictures when I look back at them. What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you while on set? I did a shoot with some horses once, and while I was posing for the photo the horse tried to bite me. I moved just in time. Luckily... What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened on set? Well... I was spraying myself with Pam, the cooking spray, and forgot that it was all over the floor. While walking later. I slipped in the oil and fell right on my butt. I wasn’t hurt thankfully. Everyone had a good laugh. What are your educational backgrounds? I was in the US Army National Guard for 4 years. That pays for my school, I just haven’t started yet. What are some things you would like to accomplish? Right now I am enjoying traveling and modeling in different locations. I hope to continue having success in my modeling c areer. If I set my mind to it, I usually achieve it. Who inspires you? I am a big fan of Jessa Hinton. She is a beautiful woman with a great heart.

List some of your credits accomplishments: I have been featured in planet muscle magazine, world of firepower magazine, modelzview cover, ultimate MMA magazine, BADD magazine cover, and Maxim to name a few. What aspects of photoshoots do you dislike? I always get hungry. Some people don’t understand that it is hard work, and it does wear you out. Honestly, there isn’t a lot that I dislike about photoshoots. Where do you see your career in 5 years? I hope to continue modeling and seeing my face in different magazines. What scares you the most? It may sound silly but sharks. I don’t like to swim in the ocean. What quirky or fun talents do you have? I can blow fire. Not a lot of people can do that. What is your sexiest body part? Honestly, I think that would be my smile. Happy girls are the prettiest girls. Who is your celebrity crush and why? Celebrity girl crush would be Britney Spears. She is just such a sexy woman. I’ve always thought so, and I’m a huge fan. What would you tell new and upcoming models? Think things through, don’t do anything you don’t want to do. If it makes you feel uncomfortable don’t do it. I have been fortunate to work with some great photographers. Definitely research who you decide to work with.

The Importance of Growing a

[Legitimate] Fan Base

I

t’s no secret that the modeling industry relies heavily on the social media world these days. Agencies charge companies a higher rate for their models who have a solid fan base, and photographers have models willing to pay higher rates when they have a large Instagram or facebook following. Since this is the way of the world we work in these days, I set out to grow my own social media following in hopes of being one of the higherpaid models out there.

By: Kari Nautique

how much they are going to pay you on how big of a fanbase you have. And it’s not an easy task, because gaining followers is more than just getting shout outs and tags. It’s a slow and steady process, but it’s a necessary one.

Some models are so desperate to gain followers quickly that they resort to buying them, and here’s a very important fact: Yes, as a model, your numbers are important! But buying followers is the worst thing you can do. It’s blatantly obvious to Back at the end of August I agencies and companies when became a part of a well-known you have tens of thousands of talent agency. I barely had 6000 followers, but no comments or followers on Instagram, and as likes on your pictures, no daily a model, that isn’t a consider- posts, and no hashtags… They able amount. but they worked hard for that too. Everyone starts somewhere. Working with companies and publications that give you a broad reach, plus implicating a proper use of hashtags and welltimed posts, will go a really long way. It’s so difficult to fi d honest and hard-working people in this industry, and purchasing followers makes a model look like a dishonest and a lazy person. So stay vigilant, my hard-working friends! It will all pay off in the long run. Social Media can be used as a tool, or used as a toy: Whichever way you decide to use it can greatly affect the path of your career.

ugely careerdriven but never take myself too seriously; I’m dedicated and enthusiastic but above all, fun! I believe that variety is the spice of life and broadening horizons are essential. I love music, travelling and the rush of performance; I will try anything twice because this is my life and I’m here to enjoy it! Life’s too short to sit and let it pass you by, opportunities don’t come to you, you have to find them Full of life and energy, Jamila Wardknott, is an incredible woman. She’s British, a Playboy bunny, driven, and is constantly looking for ways to improve her career and her life. Jamila is as enthusiastic as they come, and that’s what sets her apart from other models: whatever it is that she’s doing (modeling or not), she’s happy doing it. How did you get interested in modeling? Jamila Wardknott: My passion of being in front of the camera started at a young age. From attending dance and stage school from the age of three to four, I was avid to be in the spotlight and to be dressed up, and well, that passion just grew and got me to where I am today. It is an interest that constantly grows as I learn more and as I meet more people in the industry. My passion is something that seems to grow from other peoples passion and interest. There are so many areas that modeling involves and I do not believe that is something that I could ever grow a disinterest for. Besides modeling, what else are you interested in and passionate about? Jamila Wardknott: Travel. You travel not only to escape, but also to discover, reflect, enjoy, find, and release the hidden you. Whether it’s culture, food, art, new people, parties, and clothes. Wherever you go. FOCUS FACTORY MAGAZINE / JAN 2016

when you leave the place you call home, not only by plane–you will find a whole new world. Although I am from London, where the culture and people from other countries is extremely varied. When you travel–you see a whole other side of this. You learn, you grow, and it is amazing. Variety, really, is the spice of life. How can you expect to grow if you only surround yourself with people just like you? Meeting new people is like traveling: It expands your horizons to the depths of their minds. You don’t need a plane ride or even to pack your bag. Just strike up a conversation with someone totally different from you, and let them take you to their world. “Become friends with people who aren’t your age. Hang out with people whose first language isn’t the same as yours. Get to know someone who doesn’t come from your social class. This is how you see the world. This is how you grow.” Happiness and success is different for everybody. What do they mean to you, and do they play a vital role in your life? Jamila Wardknott: First of all, it is important to know that success is not always the key to happiness. You can have one without the other, and more often than not, it is the case. Happiness comes from within, from yourself–first of all, and then by the situations you surround yourself with. The people in your life, the food you eat, the dedication you provide to your passion, hobbies, feeling confident. A personal rule of mine is: you should never do anything that doesn’t make you happy; life is too short. Until now, it has been a great method to avoid the dull day-to-day drag of life that some people fall into. Some say irresponsible and that it will come back to bite me on the bum, but I will cross that bridge when, and if I come to it.
