Your Body At War…
With Itself!
M
any people feel that their body is in a constant battle. Not with other people though, but rather with itself! Pain seems to dominate their lives. No matter whether it is the pain of arthritis, muscular pain, internal pain or even emotional pain, many people have to deal with it on a daily basis. In some people the pain results from an autoimmune disease! Autoimmune diseases are characterised by the body’s immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue. There are dozens of different types of autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, eczema, psoriasis, coeliac disease, hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and many more. The autoimmune disease is named based upon the tissue that is attacked by the immune system. The immune system is also implicated in many other diseases, such as heart disease, cancer and chronic fatigue. It appears to be related to inflammation in the body. What is the prevalence of autoimmune diseases? Approximately 5% of the population in developed countries have an autoimmune disease, whereas the prevalence in developing countries is significantly less. It is believed that the reason for the discrepancy is simply because living in a ‘cleaner’ environment means the body experiences less harmful substances (antigens) compared to living in an environment that is ‘less clean’. As a result, when the immune system does
face an antigen it may become hyper-sensitive in some people, resulting in an autoimmune disease. What are the symptoms of autoimmune diseases? Autoimmune diseases may cause general symptoms, like fatigue, inflammation, fever or a general ill feeling (malaise). However, there may also be more specific symptoms depending on the organ or system affected by the immune system. It is common for the symptoms to come and go (‘flare-ups’), and may depend on certain triggers being present in the body. For example, a person with coeliac disease may experience a ‘flare-up’ when they consume certain foods, like gluten. What causes autoimmune diseases? There are many possible causes of autoimmune diseases including the following: • • • • • • • •
bacteria viruses toxins allergens drugs stress inflammation environmental factors
Approximately 5% of the population in developed countries have an autoimmune disease, whereas the prevalence in developing countries is significantly less. When these antigens are present in the body the immune system reacts in order to destroy them and remove them from the body. However, in susceptible people these causes trigger an immune system overreaction and this results in healthy tissue being attacked by the immune system. www.focus-on.com.au

What are the tests for an autoimmune disease? There are a number of tests that may be conducted in order to determine if you have an autoimmune disease. Since inflammation is a major symptom (and a possible cause) of autoimmune diseases, a test for C-reactive protein (CRP) may be somewhat indicative. Other tests include: anti-nuclear antibody tests, autoantibody tests, CBB, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Here are the best treatment options for autoimmune diseases: Even though there is no known cure for autoimmune diseases, there are several steps you can take in order to manage the condition successfully. The goals of treatment are to reduce the symptoms, control the immune response in the body, and maintain the body’s ability to fight disease. Of course, different autoimmune diseases require different treatments, but there are some treatment options that can be universally applied to all autoimmune diseases. Conventional treatments for autoimmune diseases tend to simply mask the symptoms of the autoimmune condition or suppress the immune system rather than dealing directly with the cause of the problem. As a result, the problem continues and, in the case of immune system suppression, increased infection, inability to fight disease, and an increased cancer risk may result. ‘Functional Medicine’ which uses a different paradigm than conventional medicine, aims to get to the root of health problems and treat the underlying cause(s) of disease rather than simply suppressing symptoms with medications. An alternative treatment option for autoimmune diseases is to take the following steps: Remove the initial cause of the problem (if possible). Therefore, if the initial cause was dietary related, then the problematic food(s) or food components must not be consumed in the diet anymore. Gluten is an example of a food component that may pose a problem. The good news is that there are now plenty of gluten-free foods on the
market, including PuraVeda, a delicious cereal. There may also be allergies to certain foods that result in the over-reaction of the immune system. An over-growth of bad bacteria in the gut, the presence of viruses or other bacteria in the body, and/ or environmental toxins may also cause an over-reaction of the immune system. This means that using probiotics and prebiotics, anti-biotics or a ‘chelating supplement’ may be necessary to remove these possible causes of a hypersensitive immune system. Of course, it is best to have tests conducted first in order to identify the exact cause(s). Reduce the symptoms. Depending on the symptoms, you may need to take a range of supplements and possibly medications for a short period of time. This should be discussed with your healthcare professional.

Eat more natural, whole foods. Avoid potential ‘irritant foods’, food additives and allergenic foods. Reduce your stress levels. Use anti-inflammatory supplements, such as fish oil, BCN’s Relieve Turmeric Forte or InflammaCALM, and DigestEZE. Use an antioxidant supplement. Since oxidation causes inflammation, reducing oxidation in the body will also reduce inflammation. BCN’s SuperFood Blend is a good example.
Modulate your immune system. A proper functioning immune system is essential for good health. Therefore, finding ways to assist its function is always beneficial. Since approximately 70% of your immune system is located
4
in your gut, improving your gut function can go a long way towards ensuring a proper functioning immune system. DigestEZE by BCN is a great product for helping to soothe the gut, reduce inflammation in the gut, promote healing of the gut lining as well as providing food for the good bacteria in the gut. Overall, it can dramatically improve your gut function and therefore help to modulate your immune system as well. BCN’s Gastro Forte AG is a high quality prebiotic that has been shown to effectively modulate the immune system. Exercise regularly. Regular exercise has an antiinflammatory effect in the body as long as it is performed moderately. Therefore, select they type of exercise you enjoy and can see yourself performing on a longterm basis.
5
Reduce your stress levels. Since stress worsens your immune response, finding ways to reduce stress is essential in helping to deal with an autoimmune condition effectively. Some of the best ways to reuce stress include: relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, biofeedback, massage, and using stress-relieving herbs like rhodiola. BCN’s Rhodiola Advanced is one of the most effective products on the market today. Overall, if you suffer from an autoimmune disease, use these simple steps in conjunction with more specific strategies suggested by your healthcare practitioner in order to reduce the impact the autoimmune condition has on your life! fo

Inflammation Could Be Making YoU
Depressed and Anxious
I
t is well recognised that mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety are associated with changes in important brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters. It is these neurotransmitters (e.g., serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline) that are increased by many antidepressant medications such as Prozac, Zoloft and Lexapro. Unfortunately, while research shows that antidepressants can be helpful for many people, a significant portion of sufferers either receive only mild or no benefit from them. As a result, researchers have been looking into other possible biochemical causes of mental health problems. One consistent finding is that people suffering from a range mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and even schizophrenia
have increased levels of inflammation in their body (as measured by blood and urine tests). As a result, one theory is that this increased inflammation may be affecting the brain, leading to disturbances in mental health. In fact, some studies have shown that if inflammation is reduced through a good diet, exercise, adequate sleep, relaxation and even anti-inflammatory medications, mood lifts and mental functioning improves. Researchers at Murdoch University in Western Australia are presently investigating the potential of curcumin (derived from turmeric) to treat depression. While further research is required, it would be wise that if you are suffering from depression or other mental health problems, to take steps to lower inflammation. We know that this can
be achieved through a healthy lifestyle incorporating a good diet (with lots of vegetables, herbs and coloured fruits), exercise, relaxation (meditation and yoga lower inflammation), and optimal sleep. Supplements that may also be helpful include BCN’s InflammaCALM, Superfood Blend, and MultiSpice.  fo If you are interested in volunteering for the Murdoch Depression and Inflammation study, see below for details.

Do You Have
Leptin Resistance?
M
any people have trouble losing weight despite eating less and exercising more and leptin resistance appears to be a major factor. In this article we will cover what leptin is as well as what leptin resistance is, how you can improve your leptin sensitivity if it is a problem for you, and therefore assist your weight-loss efforts.
What is leptin? Leptin is a hormone produced by our fat cells. The more fat that is stored in our body, the more leptin gets produced. Its function is to travel through the bloodstream to our brain (ventromedial nuclei in the hypothalamus) and tell us that we have sufficient fuel (fat) stored in our body so we can stop eating; it suppresses our appetite. Leptin also supports normal metabolic functioning. When we diet we lose fat and as a result, the level of leptin circulating in our bloodstream also decreases. This means that our appetite increases and our metabolic rate slows down. This results in our body preserving our fat stores as well as a greater likelihood that we will over-eat at some stage in the future to increase our fat stores and leptin levels again. Since one of leptin’s functions is to prevent us from starving, it is often referred to as the ‘Starvation Hormone’. Not only is leptin designed to prevent starvation and affect our metabolism, but it is also involved in immune function, bone growth and fertility. Why Leptin is NOT a Treatment For Obesity...Leptin Resistance! Back in the mid-nineties when leptin was first discovered researchers became excited because they thought they had found the ‘missing link’ to weight loss. They assumed that obese individuals must be ‘leptin-deficient’ and therefore, by providing their bodies with leptin they would be able to lose weight. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Furthermore, additional research found that obese people actually have higher levels of leptin! Therefore, there must be another mechanism involved, leptin resistance! Leptin resistance is similar to insulin resistance, except in this case the receptors in the hypothalamus become resistant to the action of leptin and leptin is blocked from entering the brain. This means that even though the fat cells are producing plenty of leptin, the leptin is unable to bind to the receptors in the hypothalamus and ‘turn off ’ the appetite. It therefore is also unable to normalise the metabolism. As a result, the overweight/ obese person continues to eat (because they are hungry) and since their metabolism is still depressed they continue to put on weight and increase their fat stores. This of course leads to even more

leptin being produced, which magnifies the leptin resistance even more!
How Leptin Resistance Can Be Reversed...
What Causes Leptin Resistance?
+ Reduce inflammation There are many ways you can reduce inflammation in your body and therefore reduce the circulating levels of CRP. Here are the best ways to reduce inflammation:
+ High fat diet A high fat diet results in a high level of triglycerides in your bloodstream. High triglycerides are associated with a range of health problems, including leptin resistance. Triglycerides have been found to block the leptin receptors in the hypothalamus. This means that the message can’t get through to tell the brain that the body has sufficient levels of fuel. + High blood sugar level A high level of sugar in the bloodstream leads to an increase in insulin secretion from the pancreas. Insulin then promotes the uptake of sugar into the liver and once the liver glycogen stores are full the remaining sugar gets converted into triglycerides, which are then sent into the bloodstream. Triglycerides, as mentioned previously, block leptin receptors in the hypothalamus. High blood sugar levels result from the consumption of refined grain foods (bread, pasta, baked goods, etc.), processed foods, and concentrated sources of sugar, particularly soft drinks. + Inflammation Inflammation in the body results in high levels of C-Reactive Protein (CRP) in the bloodstream. CRP binds to leptin preventing it from crossing the blood-brain barrier and having its effects on the receptors in the brain. CRP is also strongly correlated with obesity and type 2 diabetes. + Stress (cortisol) High stress levels result in the production of cortisol. Cortisol promotes ‘gluconeogenesis’, which is the production of new glucose from the breakdown of proteins in the body. It also liberates glucose from the glycogen stores in the liver in order to increase the blood glucose level. Since both of these mechanisms result in an increased blood glucose/ sugar level, high triglyceride levels may also result. This of course, may lead to even more leptin resistance.

• S upplement your diet. The best antiinflammatory supplements to use are: fish oils, curcumin/ turmeric, green tea (curcumin and green tea are found together in BCN’s InflammaCALM), antioxidants (BCN’s SuperFood Blend is a great example) and ginger (contained in BCN’s MultiSpice). • Lose weight. Since high body fat is associated with high levels of CRP, losing weight will help to lower it. • Perform moderate exercise regularly. Regular exercise has been shown to lower CRP and moderate exercise may be beneficial in helping to reverse leptin resistance. Intense exercise should be avoided (in the short term) since it may result in increased inflammation in the body. + Reduce insulin secretion There are several ways to reduce insulin secretion in your body:
• R educe your intake of carbohydrates. Ideally follow a low-carbohydrate diet until the leptin resistance is reversed. This is important since carbohydrate may be converted into triglycerides. • Use glucose disposal agents (GDAs). GDAs assist the body in disposing of glucose from the bloodstream. BCN’s MultiSpice contains cinnamon and turmeric, both of which are effective GDAs. • Increase your fibre intake. High fibre foods, such as fruits and vegetables, and which are available from your local IGA Supermarket, slow down the absorption of carbohydrates and therefore reduce insulin secretion + Reduce stress There are several ways to help your body deal with stress more effectively. They are:
• U se relaxation, breathing and/ or meditation techniques. • Take stress-relieving herbs, like Rhodiola rosea, regularly. (Rhodiola rosea is contained in BCN’s Rhodiola Advanced). • Seek counselling if necessary. + Follow a strict diet short term Following a strict diet for a short period of time will reduce leptin production in your body. This will then limit the amount of leptin stimulating leptin receptors in the hypothalamus and will therefore assist in reversing leptin resistance.
How Can You Manipulate Leptin to Maximise Fat / Weight Loss? Since high leptin levels in the body (in the absence of leptin resistance) is strongly correlated with reduced appetite and maintenance of metabolic rate, it makes sense to try and maintain levels of it as much as possible. The problem is though, since leptin is produced by the fat cells in your body, when you lose weight the level of circulating leptin decreases, resulting in increased appetite and a depressed metabolism. Therefore, the question remains: How can you maintain leptin levels and still lose weight? Well, it may be possible by incorporating one of the most popular nutritional principles; the ‘Treat Day’. A ‘Treat Day’ means you can eat more food than normal as well as eating all of the ‘forbidden foods’! By having a significant increase in your calorie intake, leptin levels will increase back to normal within 12 hours! Then, after the ‘Treat day’, you go back to ‘dieting’ to promote weight loss. After a week of dieting leptin levels reduce by about 50% because you have reduced your calorie intake and lost body fat. The following Treat Day (after a week of ‘dieting’) will get your leptin levels back up to normal again but without the corresponding re-gain of the lost weight. Leptin is certainly an important hormone to control when it comes to helping you lose weight. Therefore, avoiding leptin resistance as well as incorporating ‘Treat Days’ into your lifestyle can go a long way in helping you finally shed all the weight you want and best of all, keep it off long term. fo
Probiotics and
Prebiotics Why you need them!
P
robiotics and prebiotics are both essential for good health. In this article we will examine what they are, what happens when your gut is unhealthy, the differences between them, why they are so important for overall health (not just the health of your gut), and what the potential problems are with using them.
What are probiotics and prebiotics? Probiotics are foods or supplements that contain ‘good’ bacteria. Often people refer to the bacteria themselves as probiotics but once they are inside a person’s body they are simply bacteria! However, since it is a term people can relate to and understand we will refer to the bacteria as probiotics. Prebiotics, on the other hand, are a special type of dietary fibre that nourishes the good bacteria already living in the colon. What happens when your gut is unhealthy? A poor diet, use of antibiotics and other medications, a stressful lifestyle, and our genetic makeup can all lead to an abnormal mix of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria in the digestive tract. This can lead to inflammation of the digestive tract, which causes pain, gas, bloating, constipation, etc. It can also result in excess calories being absorbed into the body due to the ‘bad’ bacteria breaking down additional fibres in the gut. Recent studies have actually shown that there are significant differences in the make-up of gut bacteria between healthy-weight and overweight people, and may be a cause of weight problems for many people. 12 www.focus-on.com.au
A condition known as ‘leaky gut’ or intestinal hyperpermeability also results when the mix of bacteria in the gut is out of balance. This results in toxins being absorbed into the body, wreaking havoc throughout the whole body. Research has demonstrated that an imbalance of gut bacteria and the overall health of the gut can impact the health of the whole body, leading to both physical and mental health problems. It will be interesting to see what future research in this area discovers. What are the differences between probiotics and prebiotics? Although they sound similar, probiotics and prebiotics are very different. Probiotics are fragile living organisms (‘good’ bacteria) that must be kept alive in order to impart the health benefits they offer. Probiotics may be killed by acid (i.e. stomach acid), heat, and the passage of time. They occur naturally in fermented foods, like yoghurt, kefir and sauerkraut, but when these foods are heated the probiotics are destroyed. Probiotics are also contained in supplement form but generally only contain a few strains of bacteria. Probiotics (‘good’ bacteria) help to reduce the impact of ‘bad’ bacteria in the colon by crowding them out. Prebiotics, on the other hand, are food for the ‘good’ bacteria in the gut, which allows them to flourish. They are found in many foods, especially plant foods, but in small quantities. They are also found in supplements in concentrated forms. BCN’s DigestEZE and Gastro Forte AG are two examples.
Prebiotics are not affected by heat, acid or age and are therefore far more durable than probiotics. Prebiotics also help to lower the pH in the colon, which is beneficial for the ‘good’ bacteria and harmful to the ‘bad’ bacteria. What are the benefits of using probotics and prebiotics? As outlined below, both probiotics and prebiotics have a range of health benefits. Probiotics Probiotics can provide relief from the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, treat diarrhoea caused by certain bacteria or the use of antibiotics, regulate the immune response, treat and prevent eczema caused by certain allergens, treat secondary infections caused by antibiotic use, decrease the severity of colds and flus, reduce lactose intolerance, and may treat painful inflammation. Prebiotics Prebiotics aid the overall health of the body by: • i mproving the balance of bacteria within the gut (more ‘good’ bacteria and less ‘bad’ bacteria), • enhancing gut function by increasing the bulk, regularity and softness of the stools,
‘Did You Know That Over 70% of Your Immune System is in Your Gut?’
… and considering your gut comes into contact with more foreign organisms than any other organ in your body, it makes sense! Therefore, it is important that you do everything possible to support optimal gut health. BCN’s Gastro Forte AG contains a prebiotic, soluble fibre called Arabinogalactins, which is derived from the Western Larch tree.

• i mproving the absorption of certain minerals from the digestive tract, including magnesium and calcium, • helping to increase feelings of fullness by influencing certain hormones, such as leptin and ghrelin, • slowing down the absorption of glucose from a meal, which makes it easier to keep blood sugar levels stable, • enhancing the immune system. Since over 70% of the immune system is in the gut, improving gut functioning results in an enhanced immune system, • reducing intestinal infection caused by ‘bad’ bacteria by enhancing the growth of the ‘good’ bacteria. Since prebiotics improve gut functioning as well as the health of the body overall, they also reduce the risk of disease, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and pouchitis), polyps and cancer. What are the potential problems with using probiotics? There are several potential problems with taking probiotics but few, if any, with taking prebiotics. + Fragile Since probiotics are living organisms they are very fragile. If they are exposed to heat (even room temperature) they can be destroyed. This is the main reason why they must be kept refrigerated. Also, as with all living organisms, they suffer from the ageing process. Therefore, the longer they remain on a shelf or in storage the less potent they are likely to be. Also, processing destroys the bacteria too. For example, the process of pasteurisation kills the bacteria present in yoghurt. Our stomach produces a strong acid that protects our bodies from being invaded by foreign organisms. Unfortunately though, the acid also kills the ‘good’ bacteria, such as those found in probiotics. + Only a few strains Another drawback of most probiotics on the market is the fact that they contain
14 www.focus-on.com.au
only a few strains of bacteria (often only 1-3) whilst our digestive tract contains hundreds or more likely thousands of different strains. Furthermore, probiotics usually contain several billion bacteria. Even though this may sound like a lot it is actually only a tiny fraction of the trillions (with a ‘T’) of bacteria contained in our gut. This means that a probiotic supplement only supplies about 0.1% of the bacteria that is already present in your gut! + Must be nourished or replaced
When probiotics are taken, if they are not nourished (by combining their use with prebiotics) to increase their numbers or if they are not replaced (through daily probiotic consumption) they will be excreted by the body and bacteria numbers will return to previous levels within 2-3 weeks (or even less). What can be done to overcome the problems associated with probiotics? There is no doubt that taking probiotics is beneficial for us. However, the problems associated with using them means that you should take the following steps to ensure you get maximum benefits and minimise the potential problems. + Take a high-dose probiotic AND
prebiotic Probiotics and prebiotics vary greatly in the amount of ingredients they provide. For example, probiotics range from 5 million colony forming units (CFUs- a measure of bacteria levels in a product) up to 500 billion CFUs. Generally though, it is recommended to use a product that has at least 20 billion CFUs. This will ensure that a reasonable number will make it past the stomach (assuming most of them are still alive when the probiotic is taken). It is best to use 5-10 grams of prebiotic fibre every day (such as BCN’s Gastro forte AG). However, if you have a pre-existing bowel condition, i.e. irritable bowel syndrome, up to 15 grams should be consumed daily. + Only use a refrigerated probiotic Refrigeration prolongs the life of the
bacteria so make sure that the probiotic has been refrigerated throughout its entire life. + Use a ‘coated’ probiotic It may be worthwhile using a ‘coated’ probiotic. Even though these products have yet to be proven superior to standard probiotics, coating them may help to protect the bacteria from being destroyed by stomach acid when consumed. + Take probiotics with water on an
empty stomach By taking probiotics with water on an empty stomach the bacteria will be able to bypass the stomach with minimal destruction by the stomach acid. + Ensure the probiotic or prebiotic does
not have added sugar or calories. It is best to use supplement forms of probiotics and prebiotics rather than foods that have had probiotics or prebiotics added to them. This avoids any unnecessary excess calories from being consumed with them. One of the very best prebiotics is BCN’s Gastro Forte AG. It contains a pure form of arabinogalactans (a highquality prebiotic) from the western larch tree. It dissolves instantly in water and has a very mild, pleasant taste. It may also be added to cereal or other foods to easily increase your daily prebiotic intake. If you suffer from any gut problems, such as irritable bowel syndrome, leaky gut or Crohn’s disease, then it is strongly recommended to use a probiotic in combination with Gastro Forte AG and BCN’s DigestEZE. DigestEZE contains a range of prebiotics along with other ingredients that have the effect of soothing an inflamed gut and promoting healing of the gut lining. Both Gastro Forte AG and DigestEZE are available from health food stores and pharmacies everywhere. Our knowledge of gut health is in its infancy but is growing fast! Since it appears that gut health plays such an important role in the overall health of our body, taking steps to ensure it functions optimally should be a priority for everyone. fo

Spice Up
Your LIFE! T here are so many health benefits provided by spices, making them an important food to be consumed every day. It has been demonstrated that spices are able to prevent and treat over 150 diseases, including heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease. The reason why they offer so many health benefits is simply because they are super-rich sources of phytonutrients (nutrients from plants). Some of the phytonutrients include their ‘volatile’ (rapidly evaporating) oils that contribute to the spices’ unique aromas. In fact, many people believe that spices (and herbs) are just as important as fruit and vegetables as a part of a healthy diet because of the unique phytonutrients they contain and which aren’t available in normal, ‘everyday’ foods. Certainly, the value of spices has been demonstrated over thousands of years, even as far back as 2,600BC! For many centuries spices were more highly valued than gold! Wars have been fought over them, new lands have been discovered in search of them, and enormous wealth has been created by the people who controlled them. In fact, by the 18th century, spices had become one of the commodities of world trade. Before they were money though, spices were medicines. Turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, coriander and black pepper are all considered to be some of the oldest spices in recorded history and each of them offers a range of health benefits. Studies exploring the link between diet and health have shown that populations 16 www.focus-on.com.au
eating a diet rich in spices have a far lower incidence of disease. For example, India, a country well-known for its generous and regular use of spices, has an incidence of colon cancer three times lower than the United States. India also has very low rates of Alzheimer’s disease. Many people believe that their high intake of turmeric is a major contributing factor. Greece has a traditional diet that is rich in onions, garlic and rosemary. They also enjoy a very low rate of heart disease. Spain is the country consuming the most saffron and they have some of the lowest levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol. Here are just a few of the unique phytonutrients offered by spices that aren’t available in any other food, and the diseases these phytonutrients prevent: Curcumin Curcumin is only found in turmeric and has been shown in numerous studies to have potent anti-cancer effects. It has also been shown to fight dozens of other diseases. It is one of the most well-researched spices. Diosgenin Diosgenin is only found in fenugreek and has been shown to be a powerful anti-inflammatory agent as well as being able to specifically destroy cancer cells. Eugenol Eugenol is unique to cloves and provides it with its distinctive aroma. It is a powerful, natural pain killer. Gingerol Gingerol, the main active ingredient in ginger, helps to significantly reduce all forms of nausea, from sea sickness to morning sickness and everything in between!
Anethole Anethole is found in both fennel and anise. It helps to relax menstrual cramps and can quiet a baby with colic. Thymoquinone Thymoquinone is unique to the Indian spice, black cumin. It is a powerful immune booster. In Australia, most people don’t use spices regularly in their meals (they are used in virtually every single meal in countries like India). Health Facts! Turmeric increases lifespan Researchers in China have just published a study demonstrating that the active ingredients in turmeric have lifespan-extending effects on three different organisms. This means that these benefits may be extended to humans as well but it is yet to be proven.
Ginger may improve blood lipid profiles and lower blood sugar levels A study published in 2012 in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine has shown that the regular consumption of ginger can help to improve blood lipid profiles and lower blood sugar levels. Prebiotics improve gut bacteria and the immune system A study published in the journal Recent Patents on Inflammation & Allergy Drug Discovery has shown that prebiotics, like those found in Gastro Forte AG and DigestEZE, favours normal bacterial growth and impedes the growth of pathogenic organisms. They have also shown that prebiotics help to modulate gutassociated lymphoid tissues (GALT), improving the immune system.
Extracts from berries improve human health and prevent disease Researchers in California have found that using a supplement containing berry extracts, similar to those in BCN’s SuperFood Blend, can exhibit a broad spectrum of biomedical functions, including improving cardiovascular function, reducing oxidative stress, reducing inflammation, improving neuronal and cognitive brain functions, and improving eye health. Many of these benefits are believed to come from the various phytonutrients (nutrients from plants) they contain as well as the high oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) value. fo

Weight LOSS
TIPS!
High protein, low glycaemic index diet helps keep the weight off A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that a modest increase in protein intake and modest reduction in glycaemic index helps maintain weight loss. A simple way to increase your protein intake is by simply having a protein shake with your mid-morning or mid-afternoon meal. BCN’s ProBlend Dairy Free is a good example.
Underactive thyroid more common in elderly Sub-optimal thyroid function appears to more common in the elderly according to a study published in the Journal of Family Practice. This means that even thought the patients in the study did not require medication, their thyroid glands were not functioning as well as they could have been. The researchers stated that the result was not related to age or co-existing diseases. Therefore, nutritional factors are likely to have played a role. This is where products like BCN’s Thyron may be helpful.
Fat burners work! Researchers at the Department of Health and Exercise Science in New Jersey have demonstrated that using a thermogenic supplement may significantly increase energy expenditure as well as the utilisation of stored fat as an energy source over a 3-hour period after consumption.
Green tea compound helps stabilise blood sugar A study published in the journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research has found that epigallocatechin-3-galate (EGCG), which is found in green tea, helps to reduce the blood sugar spike that occurs following the consumption of starchy food. An elevated blood sugar level has been implicated in diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome.
Turmeric assists weight loss A recent study published in January 2013 by researchers at the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the State University of New York have found that curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) reduces obesity. The mechanism of action is multi-factorial. Since obesity is characterised by low-grade inflammation, resulting from the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines from white adipose tissue, reducing inflammation may assist with reduction of obesity. Curcumin also inhibits macrophage infiltration of adipocytes (fat cells) and inhibits adipocyte differentiation. fo 20 www.focus-on.com.au

ortisol is the primary stress hormone in the human body. Whilst it serves numerous essential functions, chronically high cortisol levels can cause a range of health problems. Here are some of the health problems that are associated with long-term, elevated cortisol levels: • • • • • • • • •
Hypertension (high blood pressure) Depressed immune response High blood sugar Insulin resistance Craving for carbohydrates Reduced libido Bone loss Muscle loss Fat storage, particularly around the face and neck (classic ‘moon face’ appearance) • Loss of cognitive function • Lower sleep quality In the past, short, intermittent bursts of cortisol would have been helpful for 22 www.focus-on.com.au
survival. However, these days chronic stress, and therefore a constantly high cortisol level, is commonplace. It seems that almost everyone faces stressful situations every day. Financial stress, relationship stress, family stress, and possible job loss, are just a few examples of the stressors we have to deal with. Furthermore, there are also biological stressors that lead to elevated cortisol levels. These include: obesity, environmental toxins, inflammation in the body, etc. So, how can we still get the benefits offered by short-term cortisol elevations in response to acute, dangerous stressors, but at the same time avoid the debilitating effects of long-term, chronic cortisol production? Some of the most effective ways to help your body deal with stress are: using relaxation techniques and/ or breathing exercises, performing meditation and/ or yoga, and using stress-relieving herbs like, rhodiola rosea. BCN’s Rhodiola Advanced is a good example. Rhodiola is classified as an ‘adaptogen’, which means it helps the

When choosing a rhodiola supplement it is absolutely essential that it has been standardised for the active ingredients. The two active ingredients in rhodiola rosea that research has shown to be the most effective are: salidroside and rosavins. If the Rhodiola product you are considering does not provide you with this information on the label then do not spend your hard-earned money on it simply because you cannot be guaranteed of its effectiveness. It is also important that the rhodiola supplement contains the required level of active ingredients in therapeutic amounts. This means that it has the same levels of ingredients that have been proven in scientific research to be effective. Furthermore, make sure that the product has an ‘AUST L’ number on the label. This ensures that the product has been manufactured at a ‘TGA-approved’ manufacturing plant. This means that the manufacturing plant has passed all of the strict Australian government regulations and is permitted to manufacture products for sale in Australia. BCN’s Rhodiola Advanced is a rhodiola supplement that fulfils all of the necessary criteria of an effective Rhodiola supplement. It is available from health food stores and pharmacies everywhere. fo
