THEANINE

for Fast-Acting Stress Relief

T

ea contains numerous active ingredients that offer many health benefits. One naturally occurring amino acid called theanine, mainly found in green tea, has been shown to play a significant role in enhancing health and wellbeing. The majority of research on theanine has investigated its ability to reduce stress and improve mood in adults. In fact, theanine is one of the most investigated natural stress-relieving ingredients [1]. In several human studies, theanine was able to reduce anxiety and physiological stress responses in adults after an acute stress. It moderated heart rate, blood pressure, cortisol, salivary immunoglobulin A and salivary α-amylase activity after exposure to a stress. [2,3]. Many of the benefits of theanine stem from the fact that it is able to increase the production of alpha brain waves. Alpha brain waves are measured though an EEG (electroencephalogram) and are associated with relaxation and mental alertness, similar to meditation. The great thing is that it achieves this without causing drowsiness [4]. Theanine is also involved in the formation of GABA, a neurotransmitter

(brain chemical) linked to stress and anxiety [1]. In fact, GABA levels are targeted by pharmaceutical anti-anxiety medications called benzodiazepines. By increasing GABA these medications have the effect of calming the brain, reducing excessive overthinking, and calming the body. Unfortunately, problems with benzodiazepines are that that they can be quite addictive and people can build up a tolerance to them very quickly.

HOW TO OBTAIN THEANINE

Theanine can be obtained from drinking green tea; however, the amount of theanine contained in each cup is actually quite low (6-7 mg) and is not enough to have a therapeutic effect (100-200 mg). Therefore, the only practical way to obtain therapeutic amounts of theanine is via supplementation. BCNs Tranquil Mind contains around 100 mg of theanine per capsule. This is the same amount of theanine as approximately 12 cups of green tea!

How Cortisol Affects Your Body

S

tress is a normal part of daily life and no matter what the cause, whether mental or physical, the body deals with it in exactly the same way; it invokes the ‘fight or flight’ response. This means the central nervous system is stimulated and the pituitary gland releases a hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which targets the adrenal glands and induces the secretion of cortisol. Unfortunately though, high cortisol levels in the body have a negative impact on health. It can lead to ‘burn-out’, which is now commonly referred to as ‘adrenal fatigue’ or ‘adrenal exhaustion’.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE WAYS HIGH CORTISOL LEVELS AFFECT YOUR HEALTH:

Increases insulin resistance Cortisol increases blood sugar levels by inhibiting the peripheral utilisation of glucose by decreasing the translocation of glucose transporters, particularly GLUT4, to the cell membrane. If cortisol levels remain high for some time it may significantly contribute to insulin resistance and therefore, promote weight gain and potentially type 2 diabetes. 4

www.focus-on.com.au

Increases the production of reverse T3 Thyroxine (T4) is normally converted into both T3 (tri-iodothyronine) and reverse T3 (rT3). Under normal circumstances only about 40-45% of T4 gets converted into rT3. However, if the body is deficient in certain nutrients or experiences high levels of stress, then more T4 gets converted into rT3 instead of T3. BCN’s Thyron contains the nutrients that are required for the conversion of T4 into T3 as well as 3 different adaptogens, including Rhodiola, Ashwagandha, and Ginseng, all of which help to reduce the impact stress has on the body. An increase in rT3 blocks the T3 receptors on cell membranes resulting in a reduced functioning of the cells and a slowing of the cells’ metabolism. Causes greater muscle breakdown Cortisol promotes ‘gluconeogenesis’, which is the creation of ‘new’ glucose,

from the breakdown of body proteins. Most body proteins come from muscle tissue, which means that your metabolism will slow down, making it more difficult to lose weight. A loss of muscle also results in strength loss and a reduced capacity to effectively dispose of glucose from the blood stream, resulting in pre-diabetic symptoms. Lowers testosterone production Since cortisol and testosterone come from the same ‘mother hormone’, pregnenolone, if production of one hormone increases, production of the other hormone correspondingly decreases. Therefore, an increase in cortisol levels in the body means a reduction of testosterone in the body as well. A lower testosterone level in men results in fatigue and lower energy levels, possible hair loss, decreased muscle mass, increased bodyfat, reduced bone density, erectile dysfunction, and lower mood.

May have a negative impact on sleep High cortisol levels, which result from high stress levels, may have a negative impact on your ability to have deep, high-quality sleep. In fact, cortisol is the hormone responsible for waking you up in the morning. When you sleep your body produces growth hormone and other anabolic hormones, like testosterone. When cortisol levels are high the production of both of these hormones is suppressed. May lead to emotional eating The relationship between cortisol and weight gain tends to result primarily from the impact stress has on ‘emotional eating’. When some people are highly stressed they tend to react by eating. This is because they are trying to change the way they feel by changing their biochemistry (internal body functioning). Some people may try to do this by smoking, others by drinking alcohol, and some by eating food. Of course, the foods people eat when they are stressed tend to be high in sugar and/ or fat, leading to weight gain.

High cortisol levels may impact your ability to have deep, high-quality sleep.”

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO MODERATE YOUR CORTISOL LEVELS:

It’s important to keep in mind that cortisol isn’t all bad; it has some essential functions in the body. As mentioned previously, it helps wake us up in the morning, it also reduces inflammation in the body, assists with the formation of memories, controls blood pressure, and supports the developing foetus during pregnancy. Nevertheless, there are many natural ways to deal with and overcome the

effects of stress on the body and to reduce cortisol. Relaxation techniques, meditation, and breathing exercises are all beneficial. Unfortunately though, when you’re busy during the day you often don’t have time to perform these exercises/ techniques. This is where a quick and easy option, like BCN’s Rhodiola Advanced, may be just what you need! Rhodiola rosea is a natural stressrelieving herb that is mainly grown in high-altitude environments around Europe. It has been studied extensively in Russia and Scandinavia for over 30 years. Rhodiola rosea contains a number of biologically-active compounds that have a range of health benefits in the body, especially when it comes to dealing with stress and reducing cortisol. If you are experiencing high levels of stress, then BCN’s Rhodiola Advanced may be useful in helping your body deal with the stress more effectively by lowering your body’s cortisol levels and nourishing your adrenal glands.

How Saffron Treats Depression

M

ental health conditions are common in Australia. In fact, approximately 30% of Australian adults will experience mental illness at some point during their lifetime. Furthermore, every year one in five adults experiences a mental health difficulty. One of the most common mental health problems is depression, which is characterised by a low mood, loss of interest in daily activities, feelings of helplessness, and a negative self-view. Depression is commonly treated with antidepressant medications (prescription rates are skyrocketing), however, there are some natural compounds that have demonstrated positive effects in helping people overcome feelings of depression. Two of the most commonly used natural anti-depressants are St. John’s Wort and S-adenosylmethionine, also known as SAM-e. The major problem with St. John’s Wort is that it interacts with so many medications, making it difficult for 6

www.focus-on.com.au

many people to use. Furthermore, SAM-e is extremely expensive, making it cost-prohibitive for many people. Nevertheless, researchers have discovered an effective, non-interacting, and costeffective compound that may assist people suffering with depression. It is the spice, saffron. Even though saffron is the world’s most expensive spice (around $11,000 per kilogram), only tiny amounts are required in order to provide a therapeutic effect. In fact, only 30mg per day can assist people suffering with depression. Saffron works through several mechanisms to assist people in overcoming depression: 1. Acts as an antioxidant 2. Has anti-inflammatory effects 3. Has serotoninergic effects 4. Modulates the hypothalamicpituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis 5. Provides neuroprotective effects Each of these mechanisms will be covered in more detail.

Acts as an antioxidant Depression is associated with reduced antioxidant levels in the body as well as elevated levels of oxidative stress. A recent meta-analysis (a statistical approach that combines the results of several studies) found that depression is associated with lower levels of several antioxidant enzymes including, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidise (GP). The meta-analysis also found that markers of oxidative stress, such as malondialdehyde (MDA), were elevated. Increased oxidation, specifically in the brain, is thought to contribute to increased inflammation, increased immune response, disruption of neurotransmitter balance, and increased neurodegeneration. All of these processes can adversely affect mood and motivation. Research confirms that the active ingredients in saffron have powerful antioxidant effects which means it can protect the brain from free radical damage.

Has anti-inflammatory effects Inflammation is strongly associated with depression. Research confirms that levels of various inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, and tumour necrosis factor-a, are elevated in people suffering with depression. Excess inflammation can damage the organs in the body, including the brain. Several components of saffron have demonstrated potent anti-inflammatory effects. Has serotoninergic effects Neurotransmitter imbalances are thought to be associated with depression. Serotonin is one such neurotransmitter that has been linked to depression. The popularity and benefits of certain anti-depressant medications, collectively known as serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are also believed to increase levels of serotonin. Even though the research is limited, it appears that components of saffron may have an impact on specific serotonin receptors in the brain.

Modulates the hypothalamicpituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis The HPA axis influences our stress response. Changes in HPA activity is associated with depression, with many depressed people exhibiting increased HPA activity as well as elevated cortisol (stress hormone) levels. Problems with the HPA axis affects neurotransmitter availability, oxidative stress and inflammation, and may even lead to greater neurodegeneration (death of brain cells). It appears that saffron may help to modulate the HPA response by lowering levels of cortisol and other stress-related hormones in the body.

can boost BDNF as well as promote neurogenesis and neuroplasticity, therefore providing a neuroprotective effect on the brain. If you or a loved one is suffering with depression and you would like to try saffron it is best to use a standardised form (levels of active ingredients have been tested) with therapeutic dosages being provided. BCN’s Saffron Ultra is one of the few saffron products on the market that has been listed with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia and contains standardised levels of active ingredients in adequate dosages. It is available from health food stores and selected pharmacies.

Provides neuroprotective effects Depression is associated with lower levels of neurogenesis (the production of new brain cells), neuroplasticity (the creation of new neural pathways), and brainderived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) (a protein that helps to support the survival of neurons). The active ingredients in saffron

This Herb Boosts Your Thyroid

T

he thyroid gland secretes hormones that regulate many metabolic processes in the body, including those associated with growth and energy expenditure. The main two hormones made by the thyroid gland are called thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), with T4 being produced in much greater quantities than T3. If the thyroid gland is overactive or underactive, metabolism will be affected, leading to a variety of symptoms. It is estimated that around one in 20 people will experience some form of ‘diagnosed’ thyroid dysfunction in their lifetime, however, rates of suboptimal thyroid function are believed to be far greater. This is where thyroid hormone levels are considered normal but people continue to present with symptoms of low thyroid 8

www.focus-on.com.au

function (see symptoms below). This may be due to ‘low normal’ levels of thyroid hormones or problems with cells responding appropriately to thyroidhormone stimulation.

S YMPTOMS OF LOW/ SUBOPTIMAL THYROID FUNCTION • • • • • • • • • •

Weight Gain/ Inability to lose weight Fatigue Colds hand and feet Intolerance to the cold Dry skin Poor concentration Depressed mood Poor memory Muscle cramps/ weakness Brittle nails

Generally low thyroid function is treated with medication, usually thyroxine. However, some herbs, vitamins and minerals also have a positive influence on thyroid hormone levels in the body. Ashwagandha (also known as Indian Ginseng or Withania somnifera) is an exotic Indian herb that has stressrelieving and immune-modulating effects. Researchers have also investigated its effects on the thyroid gland. In one study on mice, Ashwagandha administered for 20 days increased thyroid hormone activity (both T4 and T3) and reduced free radical activity in the liver [1].

8 weeks of supplementation with Ashwagandha increased levels of thyroxine (T4).” for healthy thyroid production. These ingredients, plus Ashwagandha are included in BCN’s Thyron.

The effects of Ashwagandha on thyroid hormone production was also recently investigated in adults diagnosed with bipolar disorder [2]. 8 weeks of supplementation with Ashwagandha increased levels of thyroxine (T4) in the blood. This was not observed in people given the placebo. In fact, most people on

the placebo experienced a reduction in thyroid hormone levels over the 8 weeks. While further research is required, it seems that Ashwaghanda is a potential natural option to improve thyroid hormone levels. In addition to this herb, nutrients such as iodine, selenium, tyrosine and B-vitamins are important

How Magnesium Improves Your Sleep

M

agnesium is well-known for its muscle-relaxant and cramp-relieving effects. However, one of its lesserknown properties is its ability to promote high-quality, restful sleep. There are several mechanisms through which magnesium is able to improve sleep quality. They are: • Promotes the synthesis of melatonin • Acts as an NMDA antagonist • Acts as a GABA agonist • Lowers cortisol Promotes the synthesis of melatonin Melatonin is a hormone produced by 10 www.focus-on.com.au

the pineal gland in the brain and is responsible for maintaining the circadian rhythm and sleep-wake cycle in the body. It is secreted mainly at night and helps you fall asleep and stay asleep. In addition to its sleep-promoting effects, melatonin has an antioxidant capacity, modulates the immune system, and is protective against a range of cancers, especially the most common form of cancer in women, breast cancer. Since melatonin offers so many benefits, it is essential that we ensure its optimal production. The best way to do this is by ensuring that all of the nutrients required for its production are provided in the diet. The nutrients required for optimal melatonin production include:

tryptophan, folate (vitamin B9), vitamin B6, zinc, and magnesium. These nutrients are found in the following foods: nuts, seeds, cheese, most meats, seafood, beans, lentils, spinach, avocadoes, mangoes, oranges, bananas, prunes, and cocoa/ chocolate. Acts as an NMDA receptor antagonist NMDA (N-methyl-D-Aspartate) receptors in the brain help to maintain alertness, learning, and long-term memory. Since they maintain alertness, stimulation of them during the evening is likely to keep you awake. Therefore, it is best to block/ antagonise these receptors in order to ensure restful sleep.

throughout the body via the blood stream. It has a range of effects in your body. It increases blood glucose levels, suppresses the immune system, promotes the metabolism of all macronutrients (carbohydrate, protein, and fat), and decreases bone formation. It also has a stimulating effect on the central nervous system (CNS). The cortisol level in the body fluctuates quite dramatically over a day. Under normal circumstances cortisol levels tend to be lowest in the evening and highest just prior to waking up in the morning, i.e. it helps to wake you up. Therefore, if levels of cortisol are high during the evening, getting to sleep and staying asleep becomes much more difficult. The good news however is that magnesium has the effect of lowering the level of cortisol in the body, making it easier to get to sleep and stay asleep.

HOW TO INCREASE YOUR MAGNESIUM INTAKE

You can easily increase your intake of magnesium and therefore improve your sleep by eating more of the following foods: green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds,

Increase your magnesium intake by eating more nuts, seeds, fish, avocados, meat, dairy foods, bananas, etc.” Magnesium is an NMDA receptor channel blocker, which means that it inhibits the action of the NMDA receptor, resulting in less stimulation and better quality sleep.

fish, avocadoes, dairy foods, bananas, and chocolate. You can also take magnesium in a supplement form, either as a powder or a tablet.

Acts as a GABA receptor agonist GABA (Gamma-Amino-Butyric Acid) is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that has the effect of calming the brain. Even though magnesium doesn’t affect GABA directly, it does bind to and activate GABA receptors in the brain, inducing a calming effect and enhancing sleep.

If you’re interested in obtaining magnesium in supplement form then some forms are better than others. Magnesium glycinate is one of the best forms to use because it is highly bioavailable (absorbed into the body), possibly due to the fact that the magnesium is bound to glycine, one of the smallest amino acids. Magnesium glycinate is also the least likely of all the forms of magnesium to cause diarrhoea, and it is considered the best option for correcting a magnesium deficiency, which

Lowers cortisol Cortisol is the primary stress hormone in the body. It is produced in the adrenal glands (adrenal cortex) and circulates

BEST FORM OF MAGNESIUM

the majority of the population is thought to have.

OTHER INGREDIENTS TO HAVE IN A MAGNESIUM FORMULA

Since the goal is to improve sleep, there are a few other ingredients that are worthwhile considering. Taurine is an amino acid that is involved in the conversion of glutamic acid into GABA, thereby inducing relaxation and promoting sleep. Another amino acid, L-glycine, is worth considering having in conjunction with the magnesium glycinate. L-glycine, or simply, glycine, can have both excitatory and inhibitory functions. Glycine can act as both an NMDA and GABA receptor agonist. However, in the presence of magnesium the NMDA receptor cannot be activated, thereby negating its excitatory effect on the brain. The GABA receptor on the other hand, has two glycine binding sites, making the glycine strongly inhibitory of brain stimulation, resulting in a calming effect. If you want to improve your sleep and would like to use a high-quality magnesium supplement that contains all of the ingredients mentioned here, then consider BCN’s Rest and Replenish (R&R). It contains therapeutic doses of magnesium glycinate in combination with taurine, and L-glycine. It is available from health food stores and selected pharmacies everywhere. www.focus-on.com.au 11

The Difference Between Turmeric and Curcumin 12 www.focus-on.com.au

I

nterest in the spice turmeric has increased dramatically over the last decade. It is currently one of the most investigated natural ingredients in the world. This is because many of the compounds found in turmeric can influence several systems in the body associated with health and disease. This has led many people to promote the health virtues of turmeric. Unfortunately, this could be a problem as most studies have not actually investigated the treatment effects of turmeric. What has actually been investigated is the principal compound in turmeric called, CURCUMIN.

WHAT IS TURMERIC?

Turmeric is a plant that is commonly used in Asian cooking. It is a component of curry, but is not the same as curry. Curry contains several other spices such as coriander and cumin.

Turmeric contains a group of compounds known as curcuminoids. The primary curcuminoid is known as curcumin, and turmeric only contains approximately 2 to 3 percent curcumin. While turmeric is very likely healthy for us, it has not actually been investigated for the treatment of disease. As a health-enhancing agent arising from its long-term consumption, it is probably quite beneficial. Consuming turmeric over one’s lifetime probably can aid in the prevention of many disease states. However, as a treatment for EXISTING disease it is probably not that effective.

CURCUMIN FOR THE TREATMENT OF DISEASE

Research indicates that CURCUMIN is the natural agent that can be used to treat disease. In fact, curcumin has been shown to be effective for the treatment of arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, several pain conditions, post-exercise recovery, and even depression. Remember that turmeric only

contains about 2 to 3% curcumin in it. So you would have to eat a lot of turmeric to obtain the health-enhancing effects of curcumin. Something like 10 to 50 grams of day would be required (from 1 tablespoon to over 7 tablespoons a day of ground, pure turmeric). This will probably cause stomach upset in most people.

Almost all studies have investigated the health effects of curcumin, not turmeric.” Just to summarise; • Turmeric is the plant • Turmeric is ONE ingredient in curry, but is not the same as curry • Turmeric contains about 2-3% curcumin

Almost all studies have investigated the health effects of curcumin, not turmeric. So buyer beware when you hear people talking about the health benefits of turmeric. Turmeric powder is definitely cheaper than curcumin powder, but it is not the same and most likely not as effective as a treatment for inflammatoryrelated conditions. There are many companies out there jumping on the curcumin bandwagon selling turmeric drinks or turmeric-based capsules. Definitely consume turmeric for its health benefits (plus the many other fantastic spices available), but don’t expect the same immediate pain-relieving and health-enhancing effects that are derived from curcumin. BCN’s Relieve Turmeric Forte+ contains two forms of highly bioavailable CURCUMIN to help treat arthritis and pain-related conditions. Do You Have a Leaky Gut?

L

eaky gut syndrome (technically known as intestinal hyperpermeability) is a surprisingly common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is poorly recognised and continues to be a controversial topic in mainstream medicine despite the fact that there are numerous studies showing that the condition does exist and can lead to a whole range of symptoms. If you are suffering from some of the symptoms below then it is possible that you have a leaky gut. • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Fatigue Irritability Hyperactivity Lethargy Mood swings Muscle or joint pain Poor concentration Memory difficulties Sleep disturbances Food and chemical hypersensitivities Bloating Flatulence Abdominal discomfort

14 www.focus-on.com.au

In the intestinal tract, villi and microvilli (finger like projections lining the intestinal tract) serve as a point of absorption for nutrients such as glucose, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Leaky gut syndrome causes the intestinal lining to become inflamed and the microvilli to become damaged or altered. The damaged microvilli are then unable to produce the necessary enzymes and secretions that are essential for healthy digestion and absorption. Leaky gut is basically a condition that occurs when inflammation in the gut leads to ‘pores’ lining the digestive

tract to remain open for too long. The cells along our digestive tract also serve to form a protective, strong and sturdy structure, which prevent large molecules from passing through. However, when the gut becomes inflamed this lining becomes ‘leaky’ allowing larger molecules to seep into the bloodstream which are then transported to the liver. Because these molecules are considered ‘foreign’ to our body it provokes the immune system to produce antibodies to attack them. The liver also becomes overwhelmed because of the increased workload required to detoxify the body from these foreign

objects. This is where the large array of symptoms of leaky gut results from. Leaky gut syndrome has also been associated with a number of conditions including: • • • •

Attention deficit disorder Autism Rheumatoid arthritis Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia

Skin conditions, like eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis Food allergies and intolerances Inflammatory bowel disease/ syndrome Mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, and even schizophrenia

HOW LEAKY GUT OCCURS

Leaky gut syndrome can be caused by a large number of factors and that it why it is so common. Given our changing lifestyle and dietary habits, it unfortunately seems that the problem will only get worse. Our diet is extremely important as anything that we consume on a regular basis that can inflame out gut can lead to a leaky gut. Digestive disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, food allergies, gut infections, and dysbiosis (imbalanced digestive flora/bacteria) are also common causes. Certain drugs and medications (especially non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and antibiotics), excess alcohol consumption, high stress,

and even aging, can also cause our gut to become leaky.

HOW TO HEAL A LEAKY GUT

The key to healing a leaky gut is to improve your diet. Avoid foods that you are allergic or intolerant to (common foods include: wheat, gluten, eggs, dairy products, soy, and nuts). Consume more fruits, vegetables, and herbs and make sure you thoroughly chew your food. It is also important that you ensure that your gut has good balance of healthy bacteria, so taking a high-quality probiotic, such as BCN’s Nature’s Health Tonic can be really helpful. There are also a number of herbs and other nutrients that can soothe and heal a leaky gut, like curcumin (from turmeric), glutamine, aloe vera, peppermint, glucosamine HCL, slippery elm, and quercetin. These are all contained in BCN’s DigestEZE. So, if you are suffering from several symptoms of a leaky gut be sure to take proactive steps to improve and restore your gut health. Our gut is crucially important for our overall well-being so don’t neglect it.

any people want to know the most effective ways to lose weight fast and keep it off long-term. Unfortunately though, the field of weight loss is filled with ‘land mines’ all designed to blast your attempts at fast, sustainable weight loss. In this article we will cover the best principles to help you finally get the weight off and keep it off. 16 www.focus-on.com.au

T S FA

NUTRITIONAL PRINCIPLES:

Your nutritional habits play an important role in helping you lose weight quickly. Here are the fundamental principles you should use: Control Your Food Intake In order to lose weight you must firstly create a ‘calorie deficit’. This means the calories you expend each day through your metabolism, digestion, and exercise must be greater than the calories you consume from food. Even though your goal is to create a calorie/ energy deficit, it is not necessary to count calories. A far better approach is to simply ensure your reduce the size of your meals, have regular meals, eat a variety of foods, and eat plenty of natural foods (i.e. fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds). Minimise Insulin Secretion One of the most effective nutritional principles to assist your weight-loss efforts is to control the secretion of

insulin in your body. Insulin is a ‘doubleedged sword’. It is an anabolic (musclebuilding) and lipogenic (fat-storing) hormone. Therefore, controlling its secretion from your pancreas is critical to your success. As a general rule, you want to keep insulin levels low as much as possible. This may be achieved by having small, regular meals, and by controlling your intake of carbohydrate (smaller portions and emphasising more low and mediumdensity carbs). Emphasising more low and medium-density carbohydrates in your diet means eating more fibrous vegetables (low-density carbohydrates), like broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, carrots, capsicum, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. as well as controlled amounts of the medium-density carbohydrates, which include, fruits, dairy products, and starchy vegetables (potato, sweet corn, peas, pumpkin, etc.). Only a very small amount of the high-density carbohydrates should be

consumed. These include: bread, pasta, rice, cereals, sauces, juices, etc. This is important because carbohydrates increase blood sugar levels and blood sugar has a direct impact on insulin secretion in your body. Increase Your Protein Intake Protein assists the body with weight loss through several mechanisms. It helps to maintain the lean tissues of the body, has an appetite-suppressing effect, and requires more energy to be expended through the process of digestion and assimilation compared to the other macronutrients. That is why it is so important to have a portion of protein with every meal.

EXERCISE PRINCIPLES: Regular Aerobic Exercise Sessions (ideally in the morning before breakfast) Regular aerobic exercise sessions will help you achieve rapid fat burning and weight loss. The best time to do cardio is first thing in the morning before breakfast. 18 www.focus-on.com.au

Even though some ‘fitness experts’ dispute the effectiveness of pre-breakfast cardio, it may be argued that if a thermogenic, like BCN’s XLR8 Thermogenic, is taken immediately prior to the session the fatburning and weight-loss results may be significantly improved. Perform a Resistance Training Workout 3-5 times a week Weight training is an essential part of any weight-loss program. It forces your body to maintain its muscle mass as you lose weight. Without it your body would lose both fat and muscle tissue as you lose weight, and a loss of muscle has a negative impact on your metabolism. Cardio After Weights It is definitely worthwhile performing approximately 20 minutes of cardio (aerobic exercise) after each weighttraining session. This will assist the fat-burning process in your body. Cardio after weight-training is so beneficial simply because your body will be in a carbohydrate-depleted state

Weight training is an essential part of any weight-loss program.” post-workout, making your body more conducive to using fat as a fuel source when you perform the cardio. Again, taking XLR8 Thermogenic prior to the weight-training session will make the cardio even more effective from a fatburning perspective.

SUPPLEMENTATION PRINCIPLES:

There are several supplements that are beneficial in helping you lose weight fast and improve your health at the same time. Not only is it important to know what supplements to take, but also when to take them. There are 3 types of

supplements that everyone should be using on a daily basis no matter whether you’re interested in losing weight or not. They are: a multivitamin, omega-3s from fish oil, and antioxidants. In addition to these supplements, thermogenics should be used, particularly pre-exercise (as mentioned earlier) to promote greater fat-burning in your body. A good-quality protein powder is also beneficial as are glucose disposal agents (GDAs). GDAs help to keep your blood sugar level stable, making it easier for your body to access and utilise fat as a fuel source. Cinnamon is an example of a powerful glucose disposal agent. Theoretically, there may also be some weight-loss benefit in using herbal anti-inflammatory supplements, like curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric). Since most people’s bodies are retaining fluid to some extent, primarily due to their dietary habits, assisting their body in getting rid of the

excess fluid will help promote greater weight loss. In fact, there are numerous studies currently underway examining the relationship between curcumin and weight loss. The results of these studies are sure to be interesting. A great curcumin supplement is BCN’s Relieve Turmeric Forte+.

Natural antiinflammatories, like turmeric, may also assist weight loss.”

Black Pepper Extract – Cause For Concern? Black pepper extract, also known as ‘Piperine’, is a popular addition to various supplements due to its ability to enhance the absorption of nutrients as well as extend their effect in the body [1]. Its bioavailability-enhancing nature is due to the alterations it makes to membrane lipid dynamics of intestinal cells, which may result in a ‘cell-exfoliant’ effect [2]. Unfortunately, this may be a contributing factor to the gastrointestinal irritation effects that some people experience when consuming it; black pepper is well-known to be a major cause of gastric mucosal injury, possibly resulting in ulcers [3]. Furthermore, black pepper extract inhibits nutrient/ drug transporter proteins in the liver, which normally remove them from the body; a process known as glucoronidation [4]. Black pepper extract also inhibits drug-metabolising enzymes in the liver, preventing their breakdown [4]. Due to these two factors, people using any medications should always be cautious if considering the use of products with black pepper extract because both the effects of the medication as well as their side effects may be greatly magnified. Also, black pepper is known to contain a compound called, safrole, which has been shown in animal studies to have carcinogenic effects [5]. Furthermore, the Department of Health and Human Services reports that, ‘it is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen based on sufficient evidence’. However, since black pepper extract is likely to have miniscule quantities of this compound, this likely isn’t a problem. 22 www.focus-on.com.au

Overall, the ‘take-home message’ regarding black pepper extract is this: if you use any medications be cautious about products containing black pepper extract and speak to your healthcare practitioner first. Alternatively, only use products that don’t contain this ingredient. References: 1. Meghwal, M. and T.K. Goswami, Piper nigrum and piperine: an update. Phytother Res, 2013. 27(8): p. 1121-30. 2.
