This project transforms one of the most overlooked household tools – the plunger – into a creative and interactive medium. Through research, experimentation, and innovative design, we reimagined its functionality and purpose.
The Plunger invites users to engage with it in unexpected ways, provoking thought, sparking curiosity, and offering a fresh perspective on everyday objects. It is more than a design – its an exploration of art, creativity, and interaction.

Plungers work with the power of pressure and suction. Sealing the plunger over the drain and pushing it down increases the pressure in your pipes. This moves any water and clogs downward. Then, when you pull the plunger up, it creates suction against the seal, pulling water and clogging out from the inside. swiftly and effectively clear blockages and keep plumbing systems flowing smoothly.
The household plunger, a staple tool for clearing blockages, originated in the late 19th century. In 1876, John Hawley patented the first rubber cup plunger, combining a rubber suction cup with a wooden handle for effective plumbing solutions. As indoor plumbing became widespread in the 20th century, plungers became essential for maintaining hygiene. Today, modern designs continue to refine this simple yet indispensable tool.
The most human targets hit with plungers in one minute is 16, and was achieved by Chris Ivan (USA), in Milan, Italy, on 21 February 2023. The previous record of 15 had not been broken in over 10 years!
We utilized the LATCH framework to deconstruct and better understand the plunger. By organizing its features and functions through these principles, we aimed to break down its design and usage into clear components, gaining deeper insights into its form and purpose.

The standard plunger, with a rubber cup and straight handle, works best on flat surfaces like sinks, where it can create a vacuum to dislodge clogs. While it can be used on toilets in a pinch, it‘s difficult to achieve proper suction, making a toilet-specific plunger a better choice.
A toilet plunger, or flange plunger, has a rubber cup and a fold-out flap that fits toilet drains, creating strong suction to clear clogs. With the flap tucked in, it can also seal sink or tub drains, making it a versatile choice for home use.
This uniquely designed plunger is ideal for toilet clogs due to its smaller cup, but it‘s less effective on other drains. While powerful, its hard plastic makes forming a vacuum seal difficult, limiting its versatility.
A taze plunger is a professional tool for clearing large pipes, not standard household drains. It features a disc sized for specific pipes and a steel rod to push it through. Homeowners are not permitted to use it.
We looked into the physics of the plunger to better understand what the plunger is and how it works. By examining its materials, structure, weight and reaction to different forces, we got a clearer picture of it.

After some serious research, our curiousity grew and we asked ourselves: Is a plunger just for unclogging toilets, or can it do more? To find out, we went on a plunger adventure — testing, experimenting, and discovering all the unexpected ways to use a plunger.
To share the groundbreaking results of our plunger research with the world (or at least our fellow students), we put together a wildly entertaining and mildly educational quiz — because who wouldn’t want to test their plunger knowledge?
To end our plunger adventure on a fun note, we organized a lighthearted round of Plunger Olympics — a playful competition with a special prize for the winning team.

Long ago, our great-great-grandmother was renowned for her passion for pancakes, crafting them with love and precision. Her recipes, passed down through generations, were scattered across the family, each of us inheriting just a fragment of her genius. For years, we tried to recreate her magic but never found the perfect tool to honor her legacy…
…then, a year ago, we all gathered in Graz, united by a shared dream to bring her recipe back to life. Together, we pieced together her handwritten instructions, determined to create not just the ultimate pancake but the perfect tool to make it. Little did we know, this journey would lead to a discovery that would redefine how pancakes are made forever.
In our relentless pursuit of the perfect pancake-making utensil, our journey began in the lab, where we conducted countless experiments, each leading us to the same inescapable conclusion: none of them were ideal for crafting the perfect pancake.

We refused to let our ambitions go down the drain. Then, at the perfect moment, inspiration struck with a satisfying plop. The plunger—per fectly round, the right size, a natural for measuring, holding, and stir ring—was our unsung hero. It had been hiding in plain sight, waiting for its moment to shine.
So, back to the lab we went to conduct our second round of experiments with the plunger.

Yet, alas, our journey wasn’t over— there were still failures. The perfect pancake plunger tool remained just out of reach. Undeterred, we returned to the lab, ready for a final round of engineering and innovation!
We went back to the drawing board, reworking the pancake plunger tool step by step. The measuring system was carefully fine-tuned, the handle redesigned for easier stirring, and the size and shape adjusted to perfection. These sketches capture the process—full of trial, error, and steady progress—bringing us closer to the tool we envisioned.

What began as an ambitious idea had transformed into a resounding success, bringing pancakes –and joy –to kitchens everywhere.

Traditional plungers consist of a wooden handle paired with a rubber bell, but modern designs have seen updates for improved hygiene and durability. Today, many feature plastic handles and more resistant rubber bells, catering to the demands of modern households.
Primarily, plungers are indispensable tools for clearing blockages in drains, including sinks, toilets, and showers. Over the years, various types of plungers have been developed to tackle different needs:

Interestingly, the plunger has a surprising capacity for holding items. It can accommodate up to 155 grams of noodles, balancing them neatly within its rubber bell, or even house four entire rolls of toilet paper. While this isn’t its intended purpose, it does suggest a quirky adaptability that goes beyond unclogging drains. Even under unusual circumstances, such as being used for makeup application, the plunger continues to impress. Its wooden handle handles cosmetic products well, resisting wear and maintaining its integrity, though the rubber section shows less promise in this particular use case.
For those with artistic inclinations, the plunger offers a surprising canvas—at least in part. Our brainstorming sessions led us through various ideas—ranging from a practical phone holder for those extended bathroom sessions to a candle holder that repurposes leftover wax from your favorite candles. However, we ultimately landed on a groundbreaking concept: transforming the plunger into a Modular Wayfinding System designed for pop-up installations.
Our system leverages the plunger’s inherent attaching capabilities, allowing for effortless adjustments to wayfinding directions to suit any location. Whether mounted on walls, affixed to glass horizontally, or standing vertically on the ground, this versatile solution adapts seamlessly to diverse environments. The wayfinding descriptions are printed on sustainable paper and attached via magnets, offering both flexibility and eco-friendliness.
In terms of design, we embraced a minimalistic aesthetic, featuring a sleek white plunger paired with modern typography to evoke a sense of luxury and sophistication. This approach ensures that our wayfinding system not only serves a functional purpose but also enhances the visual appeal of any space it occupies.
The Modular Wayfinding System (MWS) is designed to be as flexible as it is functional. Its magnetic base allows it to adhere seamlessly to metal surfaces, such as walls, glass doors, or even filing cabinets, making it ideal for temporary or pop-up installations. When placed horizontally, the plunger’s sturdy rubber bell ensures a secure grip, while its sleek design adds a touch of modern elegance to any environment. For vertical placement, the plunger stands firmly on the ground, with a discreet slit at the top to hold wayfinding signs or informational flyers. This dual functionality ensures that the MWS can adapt to a variety of spatial needs, whether guiding visitors through an exhibition, directing attendees at an event, or providing information in a corporate setting.
Beyond its primary function as a wayfinding tool, the MWS offers additional creative applications. Its magnetic base can be used to display artwork, posters, or promotional materials, turning it into a versatile display stand. For outdoor use, the plunger’s durable materials ensure it can withstand the elements, making it perfect for festivals, markets, or outdoor exhibitions.
The MWS is not just a tool for navigation—it’s a multifunctional design element that can enhance any space in unexpected and innovative ways.
During our final presentation, we transformed the plunger into the centerpiece of an exciting treasure hunt. Along with numerous small, paper-printed plungers, we created a multi-station scavenger hunt that utilized our innovative wayfinding system. Participants navigated through three distinct stations, each marked by our modular wayfinding solution, to uncover clues leading to a hidden treasure.
At each station, participants encountered a unique challenge: a crossword puzzle in the Plotter Room, a Sudoku puzzle by the couch on the first floor, and a maze in the Printer Room. Successfully solving each puzzle revealed a piece of the final solution. The crossword puzzle yielded the word “Locker,” the Sudoku puzzle provided the locker number “142,” and the maze led to the combination “307” for the lock.
The culmination of this adventure was the discovery of a golden, diamond-encrusted plunger hidden in the designated locker—a glittering prize for the victorious participants. This engaging and interactive experience showed the versatility of our wayfinding system and also was such a fun thing to do for the whole group.

Once the rhinestones were carefully applied, the paint had dried to perfection, and the straps were securely in place, we were finally ready to unveil our stunning final models...
