Diederik Jekel physicist, writer Have a look at your surroundings, see what’s changing, try to adapt I am a physicist, write books and do all kind of things to explain the importance of science. It has never been more important than now to take a look at your surroundings, to see what’s going on. The world you die in is exactly the same as you were born in. So, all the things that you’ve learned from your parents and grandparents was perfectly okay to live out your life. However, the world now is changing so fast, so rapidly that nobody knows what kind of information is relevant in the near future. The best tip I can give you is to adjust and think about survival of the fittest. If you try to have a look at your surroundings, see what’s changing, try to adapt. In that way you might have a wonderful, long and fruitful life.

Interview Maartje Groenen What made you choose for this minor? I wanted to combine technology with journalism, because I had never done that before. And in my major we don’t really do anything with technology. We lack a little bit of creativity too, so I was hoping to be able to get that here. Can you share your experience with your future solution? I created a website on which I gathered content for a new learning system. The learning system from my major was quite stiff and lacked creativity and I wanted to do something completely different. So, I created a video in 360 on which you can solve a problem using design thinking, so students from all majors could try and solve the problem that was viewed in there. The technology helped the student to be in the situation of the problem. How did the minor help you further? I started a start-up with a classmate during the major project entrepreneurship and innovation. And the idea was to continue my future solution and make it into something we could use in journalism. So we created Redactie 360 A small start-up that makes news videos. We want to bring the news to the people, so you can actually “be with the news, in the situation”. We hope that news will have a bigger impact, so that people really understand what’s going on. Why should you join the minor? Follow the minor if you want to step out of your comfort zone. I realized that I have so many skills and I have actually a lot of creativity I’ve never used during my major or in daily life. So, entering the minor made me realize that I could do really cool stuff with the skills I already have. I think that is something that especially young people need sometimes to get motivated for their major, or life in general. So the minor is a good starting point if you want to use all your skills and creativity into something really awesome.
